My Trip to Mexico Part II

For anybody who is interested, I have posted pictures of my trip on
my family's website. Most are captioned, to provide some context.
You will see a picture of my grand-uncle Poncho, whose stories I
listed to and recorded. Attached is a snippet on some of my family's
oral history that I was able to gather.

Indeed, all those presidents that you mentioned had indigenous or
african roots. However, as I understand, the mother of Porfirio
Diaz, Petrona Mori, was actually a Mixteca indian. A while ago, in
Mexico, I bought four interesting magazines that talked, in detail,
about the life of all the presidents of Mexico. I need to reread
those pages, but I clearly remember the data that you mention. Also,
Plutarco Elias Calles, the one ruling Mexico during the cristero
war, had northern african ancestors.

I'll check the biographies, and will try to put some interesting
information on mexican presidents.

Fixed Links

I want everyone to be on the look out for broken links.

I was informed by Rosalinda that there were a pile of dead links and boy
was there. she has fixed a lot of those she could.

I just want to say that this was a bigger job than I had invisioned and
want to thank her publicly for her work to help keep Ranchos running
smoothly.

Thanks Rosalinda,

joseph

African heritage...

I guess I

great to have been able to recognize this. . .sooooo many never ever

The Black Legend

thanks Chris,

yes that is what I heard. I guess that the idea is that every culture
inflicted its savageness and pain on others and why should Spain be
picked out exclusively over the others. Why is it that Spain is singled
out. . .is that the point? Afterall England sure did a lot of terrible
and horrible stuff to other Native Americans but nothing is said about
their Cruel Streak.  Why is Spain so evil when compared to what the
Aztecs and other Indian nations were doing to each other before Spain
came on the scene?

I really don't know that much about the "Black Legend" and was hoping
to see what others thought about it. In fact the first time I heard
about it was less than a month ago. . .I guess its an attempt at making
us not look at things in such a "black and white" frame of mind. That
we should consider the times and not judge 14th century peoples and
their actions by 21st century standards.

. . .i guess I need to look into this more,

joseph

Not only blacks...
Sorry to say that not only blacks have denied their
own race but many of those of Mexican blood have done
the same, even in my own family. Such shame can be
spread among most of us. Most of this shame is due to
ignorance.

DNA is undeniable

I just wanted to say to everyone that all the words echoed during the past
week could have been my own....from feeling more American than Mexican, to
feeling persecuted because of my skin color, to others insisting that my humble
family's origins must have been "cultured" because of the way I look/act,
language issues, identity issues, Chicanoism, etc....

I also wanted to add something to the article about DNA.....long time ago,
when a cousin of ours was marrying into an African-American family, the
discussion came up about our real possibility about having African blood in our
maternal side of the family (Luna/Herrera from Zacatecas).  Many of us have
hair so curly that we wore "afros", others straightened their hair or wore those
great big curlers at night (lol).  Thankfully, today our curly hair is seen
as fashionable, and I wear mine free-flowing often.

This family "whispering" eventually led me to do some research on African
Diaspora in Latin America as an

DNA is undeniable -- we're all closely related``Every year,'' I once overheard my father say jokingly to a friend, ``thousands of Negroes disappear.'' I remember my 8-year-old imagination going into overdrive, picturing people zapped from their homes in the middle of the night. It was only as I grew older that I realized that the people my father was talking about were choosing to disappear, running away from their families, not being taken from them. They were light-skinned blacks who could move into the white world undetected, denying their...
