Ashkenazi Levite and Joseph Puentes

Hi everyone!  I feel like I am coming in late into
this conversation, nevertheless, here's my  2-bit
contribution.

I agree with Ed.  I just received
more results from my DNA research.  My Indian branch, which has thought of
themselves as Indians  (Tlaxcalans) have just received their dna
results
  which
indicate that they descend from a male line in northwest Europe (more closely
related to the Vikings than the Spanish). It is haplpogroup I1a.

    Everybody is surprised (including one
of my doctor cousins who simply refuses to acknowledge the truth, never mind we
the tests were run more than once on more than one individyal, by more than
one company). It turns out that there is no memory in the family of anyone being
Spanish on that side.  For the last 300+ years, no one has said that they
were mestizos, only Indian was mentioned on that male line. In fact, we even
have stories about their fights with the Spanish and how they finally joined the
Spanish. There

Odd names WAS Re: [ranchos] Re: Godina Family

Hi Peggy:

Actually, "Peggy" is a nickname, a diminuative, for Margaret and what could be prettier than Margarita?  You really are a Margarita at heart.  And Margaret, I believe, may come from the Greek for pearl.  And margaritas are also lovely daisies.   Merry Christmas!

I think they're all awesome, strong names, although I don't understand some of them.  To me, they're all unique and very very cool.  I wish my mom
had named me a typical Mexican name.....I've never liked my name and got teased a lot.  Peggy, my name, sounds caucasian (nothing against caucasians, but I would have like something more .....I don't know....ethnic.......)

Merry Christmas everyone!

Odd names WAS

I started my genealogy research after we named our
last child. But recently I told my wife, if I had
known the names of my great---grandparents, uncles,
and aunts, I would have named our children after them.
She saw my list, and told me "No, Way!" In that
case, I would of just given their middle names, like
or not, since I usually gave her first choice of
picking the first names.

I still think our early ancestor's names were
beautiful.

old Spanish names

People seldom went by their given name, Concepcion became Chon..
Refugio became Cuko or Cuka, Maria de la Lus became Lucha.. my
grandfather was Epitacio, they called him Pancho. My father is Aniceto
but they call him Chet... Somehow when they added Don or Dona before
the name it became even more special whatever it was... instant
respect!

No, Alberto, our ancestor's names were not unusual in their time and
place, but a name like Gorgonia [Garcia],

---------------------------I do not see why it
would sound awful: It is from St. Gorgonia, one of the early Christian
saints.

my father's mother, sounds so awful to us now, especially those of
us raised here in the US.

--------------------------that's because they
lack  the knowledge of  early Christian Greek saints.

 Refugio sounds ugly also,

-------------------------Since when has refuge
from anything been ugly??

Yusuf: Names 's' and 'z'/HOHOHO

you said: I hope I sort of answered your question

David. . .fabulous answer and I'm so glad I asked.

thanks for taking the time to share with us things we need to hear more
about and absorb. In fact why not consider adding a little here and
there and tossing in a few references and producing a podcast on this
subject. It is something that many many people need to hear and I'd be
very happy to archive your message in both Audio and written form on the
NFU podcast. What do you think?

And while we're at it what do you have to say about the addition or
subtraction of the "s" on names for example my name: Puentes. In the
older records I only see "Puente" but in the newer records it starts
showing up and persisting as "Puentes." Some folks now a days get this
big "tude" about "We are NOT Puente, we are PUENTES!" As for me I know
I'm a Puente but somewhere down the line the name got modified. . .and i
used to think it changed in the US but no, I see the change happening
in

Z versus S

No, not yet. Now that my wife is finally recovering
from her serious illness, I plan to continue my family
genealogy research, starting this coming January 2006.

History of language

David, thank you for sharing your knowledge with the group. That's
one of the things I love about this group, we can share records,
opinions, personal family history, Mexican history, world history and
learn from what members share. My world expands because of people
like you...
thank you again, Linda in Everett
