Spanish sayings

" Una golondrina no hace verano"  I believe
it means that just because a single swallow is seen, it doens'n't mean that
summer has arrived.

Odd names WAS Re: [ranchos] Re: Godina Family

Here is a list of names in MY family
tree:

Narciso
Zerefina (or Zeferina)
Leonisio
Tranquilino
Plutarco
Abundio
Blas
Deciderio
Germana
Romualda
Abato
Tirso
Dionicio
Casimiro
Sabina
Sinecio

I think they're all awesome, strong names,
although I don't understand some of them.  To me, they're all unique and
very very cool.  I wish my mom had named me a typical Mexican name.....I've
never liked my name and got teased a lot.  Peggy, my name, sounds caucasian
(nothing against caucasians, but I would have like something more .....I don't
know....ethnic.......)

Merry Christmas everyone!

Names 's' and 'z'/HOHOHO

Hi Joseph:

Re: González.

The very first González in my line was,
Alonso González de Hermosillo,  who was born about 1467 in
Heromosilla, Burgos, Spain.  The González spelling was kept all the way
down to the 9th generation, where it shows up spelled:
"Gonzáles"  At the same time the "de Hermosillo" part was
dropped.  The "González" spelling shows up again in the next
(10th)  generation and it remained that way in the family to the present
day.

I remember reading that in Spain,  the names
were spelled with the "ez",  and in Portugal with the "es". I believe that
most errors were made by the person writing the church records and interpreting
the names.

I agree, John.  That's a beautiful name.  I might be biased, though, for my great grandfather's name was Aurelio.

Have you noticed that Aurelio is one of the few names that contains all of the vowels?  (a,e,i,o,u).  Another such name is Eulalio.

Aureliano should be proud to have a "Golden" name.

Una Pendejada: Re: Ashkenazi: Names 's' and 'z'/HOHOHO

Joseph,

Right,  most of us have the tarugo gene I think.  The trick is not to let it get the best part of us all the time.  ;-)   Or what's worst let others "vernos la cara de pendejos."

Thanks a lot for the invitation to visit you in NC.  I really wish I could enjoy a good pachanga in  your company and other members of the group with a few fine cervezas,  menudo, pozole and the whole enchilada but that won't be possible this time.    Anyway, if you keep your invitation open and the damned border wall is not built too soon I'll keep dreaming of that day.  LOL

Just kidding.  And like another Spanish saying goes:  "Soñar no cuesta nada".

Un abrazo muy fuerte

Victor

Joseph and Victor,

I take the liberty of inviting myself to the next Ranchos group reunion be it in North Carolina in California or in Guadalajara with the Mariachis. Siendo Mexicana, estoy bien puesta para una pachanga. Yes as a good Mexican I am always ready for a good fiesta, anywhere, anytime and especially with my primos, primas and compadres.

Arriba la fiesta y vamos a la fiesta, I will bring the atole blanco and the tamales de elote. My mother in-law made the best atole blanco and my tia Lupe made the best tamales de elote and I make a darn good pozole if I do say so myself.

Felices dias Navideños a todos and to all a good year and good cheer.

Atentamente,
Alicia Avelar Olmos de Carrillo

Z versus S

Erlinda, my great-grandfather's first wife was Ma. Eleuteria Tov/bar from Jerez. Her brothers and sisters were born in both Tepetongo and Tla--don't remember how to spell this town. Her parents were Mauricio Tovar and Ma. Petra Escobedo. My great-grandfather had about 4 kids with her before she died and he married my great-grandmother, who was the age of his eldest daughter or a little older.

And yes, Davila is the same as de Avila. I read something about it this past week but don't ask me where, 'cos I dunno. The surname Correa is Portuguese, I believe. Marge:)
