Juan Avila (abt 1690) married Josepha Ximenes (1693) and had children between 1714 and 1734. In the marriage documents of his children, he is listed as Juan De Avila Maldonado. However, the only Maldonado/Avila connection I can find is 3 generations earlier when a Juan De Avila De Salazar married a Maria Maldonado and had children between 1620 and 1644. Is there any possibility of a connection between these generations?

Arturo Ramos, Nuestros Ranchos Moderator, once greeted with me with "Welcome to my world"
In March 2010, the Nueva Galicia Genealogical Society held a convention in Milpitas, CA. Primo Arturo Ramos, was the featured speaker.
Arturo's topic was: Matrilineal Naming Practices: why and how family surnames were used.
It was about:
There will be some or all of the family children who will use only the mother's surname. This is a common practice when the mother's pedigree comes from a wealthy or influential family. There are also some instances where a child's different surname is chosen from another generation. i.e. a grandfather or grandmother of either the father's or mother's pedigree. It was customary to name some of their children after their grandparents; except that they also included their grandparent’s surnames. So one family's children's surnames could be 2, 3, or more different surnames. And then those children's grandchildren could revert back to the normal surname.
