Regidor Geronimo Magdaleno y Maria Cecilia Patiño bautizaron a:
Elvira Magdalena, b. 18 May 1603, Morelia.
Maria Magdaleno, b. 22 Dec 1607, Morelia.
Juan Salceda Andrade y Francisca Magdaleno bautizaron a Joseph, 20 May 1620, Morelia.
Gracias antemano,
Manny Diez Hermosillo
I have Diego Magdaleno married to Mariana de Aguirre in my lines.
According to the genealogy given in this blog, Diego Magdaleno is the son of Diego Magdaleno and Lorenza de Ovalle; Diego Magdaleno I is son of Geronimo Mejia Magdaleno (Regidor de Valladolid, Mich) and Isabel de Soria; Geronimo Mejia Magdaleno was born in 1554 in Tordesillas, Castilla, son of Alonso Mejia and Francisca Magdaleno Escudero. Geronimo and Isabel passed to Indies in 1583, accompanied by their daughter, Francisca Mejia Magdaleno and her husband Juan Salceda Andrade. They lived in Valladolid, Michoacan:

This genealogy is based on the Prueba de Nobleza/Limpieza de Sangre of a grandson of Geronimo Magdaleno, Capitan Geronimo Magdaleno Salceda y Mejia, son of Juan Salceda Andrade and Francisca Magdaleno. The Proof was conducted in Spain in 1651, and not in Valladolid Mich:

Consejo de Órdenes (España)
Pruebas para la concesión del Título de Caballero de la Orden de Santiago de Jerónimo Magdaleno de Salceda y Mejía, natural de Valladolid de Michoacán, Alcalde Mayor y Teniente de Capitán General de las villas de San Miguel y San Felipe
I have doubts about this genealogy; in none of the other documents found at PARES AGIS, regarding the Magdaleno of Valladolid during this time period, is there mention of the compound surname "Mejia Magdaleno; instead, we find "Magdaleno de Mendoza."
And more, on the Confirmacion de Oficio of Geronimo Magdaleno, when he was named Regidor of Valladolid in 1602, it says his father was FRANCISCO MAGDALENO, who was married to Elvira de Mendoza:
ES.41091.AGI/10.5.11.556//CONTRATACION,961,N.16

There's more: when looking through the archives of Morelia, Mich, for the years 1594-1621, Isabel de Soria does not appear as the wife of Geronimo Magdaleno, instead, we find Maria Cecilia de Patiño (daughter of Capitan Francisco Patiño de Herrera). Nor do the surnames "Escudero" or "Soria" appear in any of the Magdaleno lines in Valladolid, as it was the norm to give at least one heir a lost maternal surname.
Is it possible there were two Regidor Geronimo Magdaleno's, who both had daughters named Francisca married to Juan Salceda Andrade? According to what I've cited, there was only one, and hd was the son of Francisco Magdaleno and Elvira de Mendoza, and he was married to Maria Cecilia Patiño (although possible with Isabel de Soria in 1o), and that the genealogy given in the Prueba of 1651 is wrong or at least skips a generation: the witnesses were wrong, or they lied.
Look, according to the Prueba of 1651, the tree looks like this:
I. Alonso Mejia casado con Francisca Magdaleno Escudero (Castro Verde del Campo, Zamora)
II. Geronimo Mejia Magdaleno casado con Isabel de Soria (b. 1556, Tordesillas)
III. Francisca Mejia Magdaleno casada con Juan Salceda Andrade (passed to Indies 1583, already married, when her mother was only 23?).
IV. Geronimo Magdaleno Salceda y Mejia (age 27-30 in 1651:b. 1621-1624)
And from my research, my sources being PARES-AGIS, FamilySearch, and "Haciendas de tierra y agua de la antigua cienega de Chapala" by Heriberto Moreno Garcia, it looks like this:
I. Francisco Magdaleno casado con Elvira de Mendoza (el, ex-regidor de Jaen; hacendado de Cuitzian; ella nacida en Sevilla)
II. Geronimo Magdaleno de Mendoza casado con Maria Cecilia Patino. En Mexico hacia 1590 (puede ser su 2o m.).
III. Francisca Magdaleno de Mendoza casada con Juan Salceda Andrade (en Mexico, ca 1619)
IV. Geronimo Magdaleno Salceda y Mejia (age 27-30 in 1651:b. 1621-1624)
The Prueba of 1651 skips a generation, and there's no way Juan Salceda and Francisca Magdaleno were married before 1583, when their son Nicolas Salcedo was only 16 when he was named Regidor in 1658 (b. 1641-2).
To establish a timeline and orient ourselves:
Geronimo Magdaleno y Maria Cecilia Patiño baptized:
Elvira Magdalena, b. 18 May 1603, Morelia.
Maria Magdaleno, b. 22 Dec 1607, Morelia.
Their names, along with those of Francisco Magdaleno and Elvira de Mendoza, are seen frequently in the baptisms and marriages in Morelia between 1597 & 1611, as padrinos or testigos.
Juan Salceda Andrade and Francisca Magdaleno baptized Josepha, 20 May 1620, Morelia.
Licenciado Joseph Magdaleno de Mendoza, was beneficiado of the partido de Juchitlan when he died 15 Jun 1624, in Valladolid. He was a bachiller when he baptized a child named Andrea, 07 Dic 1600, her padrinos Francisco Magdaleno y Beatriz de Sosa. For this reason, I have him as a son of Francisco & Elvira.
Licenciado Gonzalo Magdaleno de Mendoza was beneficiado de Aguacana in Abr 1624 and May 1625. He was padrino for Joachin, hijo de padres no concocidos, 19 Feb 1607, madrina Doña Geronima de Mendoza. They could be children of Francisco Magdaleno and Elvira de Mendoza, or she Elvira;s sister.
Does anybody have any documentation that would support the Mejia Magdaleno genealogy? Looking for documentation (preferably primary source: baptism, marriage or death - and from Mexico!), that shows:
Geronimo Magdaleno married to Isabel de Soria.
Diego Magdaleno married Lorenza de Ovalle.
That Diego Magdaleno, married to Mariana de Aguirre, is the son of Diego Magdaleno and Lorenza de Ovalle
According to Moreno Garcia in "Haciendas de tierra y agua...," Geronimo Magdaleno de Mendoza had a brother, Diego Magdaleno de Mendoza, jinete y hacendado, who had two sons: Juan de Lievana y Diego Magdaleno, both were clerics. He cites "Familias y casa de la vieja Valladolid," by Gabriel Ibarrola Arriaga. Would anyone have access to a copy?

Magdaleno
Hi Manny,
I too descend from this couple through their son Simon Magdaleno m. Josefa Guzman and daughter Andrea Alvarez and her second husband Francisco de Chavez.
I also have read the Magdaleno genealogy listed in the genealogias.wordpress.com blog and just like you have not found any supporting record or source that confirms the information in the blog. I did add Diego (I) and Lorenza de Ovalle as (unconfirmed) parents of Diego m. Mariana de Aguirre since some of the daughters of Diego and Mariana used the Ovalle surname.
Thanks
Austin Perez
Re: Magdaleno
Thanks, Austin,
I've left them in my tree unconfirmed, as well, and for the same reason.
I agree, Diego II is son of Diego I and Lorenza de Ovalle, for the reasons you mention. But is Diego I the son of Geronimo Magdaleno de Mendoza? Or his brother, as suggested in Moreno Garcia's book? In which case, Diego II took his orders (he could've left the Order - it'd have to be that way, since Mariana de Aguirre died a widow).
I still have Isabel de Soria, as well; perhaps Maria Cecilia Patino was Geronimo's 2nd wife. Until I learn otherwise, I'll have her tentatively as the mother of Francisca Magdaleno and Diego Magdaleno I.
This is my first line that I've researched in Valladolid/Morelias, and I'm impressed by the collection at FamilySearch. It helps that the Magdaleno's were so prominent, as well as active. I've found 20 instances of Francisco Magdaleno, acting as padrino or testigo, between 1595 and 1610, either with or without Elvira de Mendoza.
What I find uncanny is that the 1651 Prueba is wrong: we've all seen this before, in many dispensas - the memories of testigos can be fuzzy, and maybe these ones forgot a generation (if Francisco Magdaleno is even a Mejia Magdaleno, from Tordesillas). But for so many testigos to get it wrong? And on a Limpieza de Sangre, for joining such a prestigious order? Maybe the investigators "led" the testigos, showing them a diagram and asking them if they agreed? Who knows. Part of me thinks it was on purpose: perhaps his advocates doctored the limpieza, and said he descended from another branch of the family, to ensure Geronimo Magdaleno Salceda was accepted into the Order. Why? The only thing I can think of: Francisco Magdaleno or Elvira de Mendoza or Maria Cecilia Patino had Conversos in their lines, which would make Geronimo ineligible to join the Order. Pure conjecture, but it sounds cool!
Thanks again, and for your work, which I always reference to see if I'm going in the right direction!

Licenciado Gonzalo Magdaleno
Here’s more on Licenciado Gonzalo Magdaleno - he was the beneficiado of Aguacana (or Guacana) and Churumucho, from at least 1624 to 1644. His name disappears from the records around then, so he might have passed away. And he would use the surname "Magdaleno de Liebana," so he’s probably a son of Diego Magdaleno and Lorenza de Ovalle:
Morelia > Diócesis de Michoacán > Gobierno 1624-1669 > image 14 of 1236.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-19273-24149-43?cc=1883388&wc…
And as I mentioned, he was padrinos with Geronima de Mendoza for a child on 19 Feb 1607; he didn’t wear a title, so he hadn’t taken his vows yet, and was probably still a mozo. I place his birth in the early 1590s. If he is a son of Diego Magdaleno and Lorenza de Ovalle, that places their births around 1560-70, so Diego would be a brother of Geronimo Magdaleno and not his son, as the wordpress genealogy has him.
Moreno doesn’t name the wife of Diego Magdaleno de Mendoza (I’m sure Ibarrola does), but we can assume that she is Lorenza de Ovalle, since she is supposedly the mother of Juan de Liebana (a cleric) and Diego Magdaleno (who would marry Mariana de Aguirre). I still haven’t seen “Juan de Liebana” in the Morelia records, perhaps he presided in a different parish, or perhaps he and Gonzalo Magdaleno de Liebana are the same person?
Do the timelines fit?
Thanks,
Manny Diez Hermosillo

Gonzalo Fernandez Magdaleno
Hi Manny
The early Patzcuaro records show a Gonzalo Fernandez Magdaleno, escribano publico, married to Maria Maldonado. I did not find any record that connects this Gonzalo Magdaleno to the Magdaleno's of Valladolid. Though, the baptism record for Gonzalo and Maria's daughter Marta is very interesting in that it lists the priest who performed tha baptism as fray Juan de Lievana "vicario que ala era del dicho convento [San Agustin]". Could this be the Juan de Lievana, son of Diego Magdaleno de Mendoza?
Hasto pronto.
Austin Perez
Padre Maestro Fray Juan de Lievana
Hello Austin,
That must be him and it would explain why he doesn’t appear in the Valladolid/Morelia archives of that period - he was in Patzcuaro.
Here’s another: 8 Dec 1625, Patzcuaro, Padre Maestro Fray Juan de Liebana de la Orden de San Agustin, presiding over the marriage of Miguel de Urria(?) and Maria de la Cerna:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18745-47661-59?cc=1883388&wc…
DIEGO MAGDALENO Y MARIANA DE AGUIRRE
Again, I’m trying to fix a timeline on this couple. The 1679 Jalostotitan Padron has them living with one other person, Alonso de Aguirre (does anyone know who he is?); none of their known children are listed, so, Diego & Mariana were either newlyweds, or the children had already moved out. I think the former, since it fits better into the timelines of their children, who would then all be born after 1679, placing the marriage of Diego & Mariana around 1678-79.
What’s your opinion in regards? (that is an open question to the community)
I was going through the early Jalostotitlan defunciones and came upon a couple of records regarding a Diego Magdaleno, living in San Juan in the late-1660s:
18 Jan 1668, Jalostotitlan: Angel/San Juan (…) murió un niño, hijo de Diego Magdaleno.
And 16 days later:
Both are on img31R:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18450-50786-12?cc=1874591&wc…
The first doesn’t give the mother’s name, and the second doesn’t say how she died, but my guess is, Juana de la Trinidad & Diego Magdaleno were newlyweds, and she tragically miscarried their first child, and died in her parents’ home some 2 weeks later. Is it possible that this Diego Magdaleno is the same who married Mariana de Aguirre? The timelines & locations fit. This would place his possible birth age 10 years earlier than I thought.
Gracias,
Manny Diez Hermosillo

FERNANDEZ MADALENO
Hola Austin,
A few more pieces to add to the puzzle:
From around 1604-1607, Francisco Madaleno (how they spelt their name) was Mayordomo de la Fabrica y Hospital de la Catedral de Valladolid, and his name can be found on several documents throughout those years. Here’s his signature: IMG623R
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18784-19753-46?cc=1883388&wc…
According to PARES-AGIS, Gonzalo Fernandez Magdaleno was named escribano publico of Patzcuaro 06 Apr 1588, replacing Juan Fernandez Magdaleno, who had resigned. Probably his brother. The documents aren’t digitized.
The ledger of the Cofradia del Rosario, 21 Aug 1593, has Francisco Madaleno, Elvira de Mendoza and their children paying their dues: Francisco is listed as FRANCISCO HERNANDEZ MADALENO, definitely linking him to Gonzalo and Juan: IMG612L
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18784-17892-92?cc=1883388&wc…
So, it’s not MEJIA Madaleno, it’s FERNANDEZ Madaleno. Either Francisco and Gonzalo are brothers, or Gonzalo's his son. What year was Gonzalo Fernandez Magdaleno's child born?
The next image 613L has a Diego Madaleno and his wife, Ana Gutierrez de Osuana?:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18784-17893-93?cc=1883388&wc…
Argh. “Diego Madaleno” is like “John Smith” in colonial Michoacan! Since they don’t mention “sus hijos,” they were probably a young couple.
I’ve also located Fray Diego Madaleno, the other son of Diego Madaleno de Mendoza and brother of Ldo. Juan de Liebana, who also became an Augustin. This is from 1607, he was Procurador of the Convento de San Agustin:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18870-66743-66?cc=1883388&wc…
And here are the minutes from a cofradia election, with the signature of Geronimo Madaleno de Mendoza, IMG9R

TORRES DE TREMIÑO
According to her Bienes de Difuntos, Elvira de Mendoza was married first to Juan de Torres Tremiño; I’ve seen a Juan de Torres in early Valladolid archives, I wonder if he’s the same person? And there has to be a link with Alcaide Diego de Velasco.
Saludos,

Ana Gutierrez de Liebana, mujer de Diego Madaleno de Mendoza
I guess my eyes were tired when I looked at it, but img613L says Diego Madaleno and his wife Ana Gutierrez de Liebana, which makes her the obvious mother of Fray’s Juan de Lievana and Diego Madaleno, and more than likely, Ldo. Gonzalo Madaleno de Lievana.

Gonzalo Fernandez Magdaleno & Maria Maldonado
You're welcome, Austin, and thank you. Those dates would make Gonzalo Fernandez Magdaleno a contemporary of Regidor Geronimo Madaleno, and if that cofradia ledger wasn't a notary's mistake, perhaps his brother.

False Genealogies
I was reading through the Wikipedia entry for “Casta”:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casta#Purity_of_Blood_and_the_Evolution_of…
“Spaniards became obsessed with lineage, particularly since evidence of lack of purity of blood had consequences for marriage, eligibility for office, entrance into the priesthood, and emigration to Spain's overseas territories. The necessity to produce genealogical records to prove one's pure ancestry gave rise to a trade in the creation of false genealogies.”
Martinez, Genealogical Fictions, p. 266-67.
Wow. So, the need for doctored genealogies was great enough to create a trade. In light of the fact that Regidor Geronimo Magdaleno was the son of Francisco Magdaleno and Elvira de Mendoza, I’d say Geronimo Magdaleno Sauceda’s Limpieza de Sangre is a forgery, and a very elaborate one, at that. Have any of you read it? It’s pages & pages of numerous testigos - clerics, knights, officials, and all of them giving the Mejia-Magdaleno Escudero pedigree. I wonder if the Sauceda y Andrade lines are doctored, as well?
This stresses the importance of verifying and verifying and verifying.
This also tells us that either Francisco Magdaleno or Elvira de Mendoza likely had Conversos in their lines, as did Maria Cecilia Patiño, since she is also excluded.
Food for thought.

Gonzalo Magdaleno & Maria Hernandez
Austin,
This newly in from an NR thread on Juan Gonzalez de Hermosillo:
http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/21790?page=3
At PARES, look for the 1607 concesion de oficio for FRANCISCO HERMOSILLO, it names him as the son of Juan Gonzalez de Hermosillo and Ana Rodriguez, his paternal grandparents as Gonzalo Garcia de Hermosillo and Leonor Sanchez de Porras, and maternals, Gonzalo Magdaleno and Maria Hernandez.
Gonzalo Magdaleno and Maria Hernandez are of particular interest to this thread, with possible links to Gonzalo Fernandez Magdaleno (and perhaps Juan Fernandez Magdaleno and Francisco Fernandez Magdaleno).

Diego Magdaleno and Mariana de Aguirre
Hola primos,
Diego Magdaleno and Mariana de Aguirre appear in the 1672 & 1673 padrones for Jalostotitlan, living in San Juan de Lagos, on the estancia of Nicolas de Aguirre and Andrea Alvarez; on both entries, Mariana is listed as "Mariana de Mendoza." Source: "Jalostotitlan Padrones Parroquiales, Vol II" by Sergio Gutierrez.
They appear again in the 1679 padron, but now they're on their own rancho; Mariana is listed as "Mariana de Aguirre," and there is a child named Alonso de Aguirre living with them. It does not explain his relationship, only that he had confessed (age 5 and up), but not received communion (age 8 and up). That'd place his birth year around 1673-1674.
Like many of us who descend from this couple, I suspect that Mariana de Aguirre is the daughter of Nicolas de Aguirre and Andrea Alvarez, in light of the surnames associated with her - Aguirre, Alvarez, Mendoza, which are all surnames associated with Nicolas de Aguirre and Andrea Alvarez. The fact that she and Diego are living in their home is a good indication that she is their daughter. Diego & Mariana's entry in the 1679 Padron is located right between those of Nicolas de Aguirre and of his sister, Ana de Mendoza, suggesting that their rancho was located on Los Aguirre.
From the timeline I've worked out for this family group, Diego Magdaleno and Mariana de Aguirre's children would have been born between 1680 and 1700; the timeline set out by these padrones can work within that time frame. I'd venture to say Diego and Mariana were newlyweds in 1672, since they were still living with her parents, and that Mariana was likely 14-16 years old, placing her birth around 1656-1658. This would place her at just over 40 in 1700, working well into her baby-making clock.
Though these padrones don't confirm that she is the daughter of Nicolas de Aguirre and Andrea Alvarez, they do move her from "possibly" to "more than likely." And they establish that Diego Magdaleno was living in San Juan de Lagos by 1672, and that he and Mariana de Aguirre were already married, and that none of their known children had been born yet.
While searching the burials in San Juan de Lagos, I found something of interest: here's a burial record for an "Angel," an unnamed child of Diego Magdaleno and an unnamed mother, dated 16 Jan 1668, Jalostotitlan (right image, 2nd entry): https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18450-50786-12?cc=1874591&wc…
The last entry on the same page is for Juana de la Trinidad, Espanola, wife of Diego Magdaleno, buried on the 03 Feb 1668. She left no will, as she "still lived with her parents." At first glance, it's obviously a childbirth gone bad, and child and mother died, leaving Diego Magdaleno a widower. Though we don't know if this is the same Diego Magdaleno who married Mariana de Aguirre, he still fits within the timeline & location, so Mariana de Aguirre could have been a 2nd matrimony.
Does this work with what you have? And do any of you have documents to support this?
Gracias y saludos!

LOS MAGDALENO, LOS AGUIRRE Y LOS LIMON
Hola Paco,
Thank you for the detailed information - there were a couple I didn't have. I'm really fascinated by the "de Don Diego" surname; I haven't tracked that line, and it's an interesting clue - great work. Diego Magdaleno-Ovalle, who was married to Mariana de Aguirre, is always refered to as "D. Diego Magdaleno" in the few partidas and padrones I've seen, so he's the obvious source for that surname. And thank you for your kind words! The sentiment is mutual!
Hola Emilie:
I'm not sure if Micaela de Aguirre, who was married to Juan Diego Magdaleno, and Mariana de Aguirre, who was married to Don Diego Magdaleno, are the same couple; I thought this might be the case, but according to other records I've seen, there are some conflicts. I believe Micaela was the daughter of Alonso Martin Limon-Sayas and Ana de [Aguirre] Mendoza; she appears living on then-widowed Ana de Mendoza's estancia, in the 1679 Jalostotitlan padron. I think Micaela [Limon] de Aguirre and Mariana de Aguirre-Mendoza would be 1st-cousins (through 2 lines), and I'm not sure how Juan Diego Magdaleno fits into the picture; from timelines I've constructed, he appears to be younger than Don Diego Magdaleno-Ovalle, by at least one generation. He might be an hijo natural or a son from a previous marriage. I still need to review my notes.
MARTIN DE AGUIRRE & LEONOR DE MENDOZA
Here's what I have for the family group of Martin de Aguirre & Leonor de Mendoza (according to Gonzalez-Leal in "Retonos," Leonor de Mendoza was the daughter of Alvaro de Ornelas and Ysabel Sanchez de Mendoza; Ysabel Sanchez de Mendoza was the daughter of Toribio Hernandez de Arellano and Ysabel de Mendoza). Birth years are approximates, taken from the 1649 & 1650 padrones for San Juan de Lagos/Jalostotitlan:
1. Nicolas de Aguirre, b. 1624, m. Andrea Alvarez y Martin Limon-Sayas.
2. Martin de Aguirre, b. 1627
3. Ana de Mendoza, b. 1629, m. Alonso Martin Limon-Sayas
4. Leonor de Aguirre, b. 1631
5. Luisa de Mendoza, b. 1633
6. Maria de Mendoza, b. 1635
7. Juana de Aguirre, b. 1636
8. Salvador de Aguirre, b. 1641
9. Nicolas de Aguirre, b. 1646
ALONSO [MARTIN] LIMON AND MARIA DE SAYAS (OR ZAYAS)
I have very little information on this line. This family appears to have lived in Santa Maria de los Lagos, though both Alonso Martin Limon (son) and Andrea Alvarez (who married siblings), would both appear in the San Juan padrones, living on Puesto de los Aguirre:
1. Miguel Limon-Sayas, ca 1631, m. Juana de Ortis
2. Alonso Martin Limon, ca 1633, m. Ana de (Aguirre) Mendoza
3. Andrea Alvarez, ca 1635, m. Nicolas de Aguirre-Mendoza
4. Magdalena Limon, b. 22 Jul 1639, Lagos, Jal.
As far as I can tell, these 2 lines would be the sources for the surnames: Aguirre, Mendoza, [Martin] Limon, Alvarez and Sayas (or Zayas).
Paco: I'm curious what your sources are, for "Perez de Aguirre" and "Alvarez Tostado." Are those from Holcombe? I haven't seen those surnames associated with these family groups, and they're interesting leads.
Gracias y saludos!

Dispensas, nombres y apellidos
No...thank you (as in your work on the Hermosillos de Montesa)!! All I can say is consult the original sources I have cited with Web sources, and really look at the troncos and other genealogical data. That's where the real goodies are located. In more than one source I have seen Nicolás de Aguirre mentioned as Nicolás Pérez de Aguirre (see the details of this one here https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18411-65664-27?cc=1874591&wc… ), and his wife María Andrea Alvarez with the full surname Alvarez Tostado.
I frankly do not know where Nicolás got the "Pérez" nor where María Andrea Alvarez got the "Tostado" from, but they are obvious indicators that these were actual surnames still hidden deeper within the ancestries of their families. In other words, mysteries that have yet to reveal their hidden secrets.
Take the surname Ovalle. Diego Magdaleno and Mariana de Aguirre had a daughter called Manuela, who preferred the surnames Oballe (Ovalle), Magdaleno, and Aguirre. Ovalle is obviously a reference to Lorenza de Ovalle, mother of Diego Magdaleno. She was still referred to as Manuela de Oballe, in the 1740s and 1750s when her children were getting married in San Juan de los Lagos.
Careful not to mix up the names...so close attention. Mariana de Aguirre (married to Diego Magdaleno) had a sister named Rosa de Aguirre, bc 1670 (married to Eugenio Guzmán y Prado, b 1666, h.l de Melchor Guzmán y Prado & Jacinta Guerrero-Gutiérrez de Valdivia).
Diego Magdaleno and Mariana Aguirre, had a son named Juan Francisco Xavier Magdaleno de Don Diego, born ca. 1673 (aka Juan Magdaleno or Juan de Don Diego) married to Micaela Sánchez de Mendoza y Limón (aka Micaela de Mendoza, Micaela Limón, Micaela Sánchez), daughter of Blas Sánchez de Lara y Mendoza (Blas Sánchez de Mendoza) and María Martín-Limón de Zayas y Ortega (María Limón or María de Zayas).
The names Juan, Diego, Andrea, María, Rosa, etc., pop up frequently in these ancestries, so one has to be careful identifying the correct ones. Even more diligent one has to be, when there are mistakes in the original sources.
And regarding María Andrea Alvarez "Tostado"...I am not thoroughly convinced about her parentage. Not quite "sold" on the "official story", if there really is one. Still working on that little root-branch of the family tree.

Thanks for the additional data...but precisely upon further researching these specific families to provide an update response, I discovered that I was missing several children and other more precise bits of data on each of them, in particular death records. And not just the death records provided just above, which you have posted on your great website, Sr. Agustin Perez. Just to mention two highly relevant individuals to this discussion, I located your family entries for my 5th-great-grandmother, María Rosalía de la Luz Pedroza [http://www.wikitree.com/genealogy/Pedroza-Family-Tree-31]...we are both descendants of José Dionisio Guadalupe de Pedroza and María Salomé López...and my 7th-great-grandmother, Rita Josefa de Chávez [http://www.wikitree.com/genealogy/de%20Ch%C3%A1vez-Family-Tree-107], to name a few. Very nice, well documented with sources.
I began analyzing the first San Juan de los Lagos death records and have located many others not listed above. In a few days I will be finished with the whole thing and posting relevant entries as well as additional data. I think you will all be pleasantly delighted.

Aguirre in San Luis Potosi
Hola primos,
Here’s an interesting piece of the Aguirre puzzle: I was sifting through early San Luis Potosi baptisms (which aren’t indexed), and I found Martin de Aguirre and Leonor de ORNELAS baptizing a daughter I had no record of: Francisca, baptized 19 Apr 1620 (top right):
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1951-20421-26246-39?cc=1860864…
Francisca doesn’t appear living with Martin & Leonor in any of the padrones, but she might have already married by then.
This places Martin Aguirre & Leonor Mendoza in SLP in 1620; there are other Aguirre in the SLP archives, but I don’t know if and how they’re related.
Saludos,
Manny Diez Hermosillo
Acta bautismal de Francisca de Aguirre y Ornelas 19 Feb 1620 SLP
Ooh very nice Manny!! Great find!! Muy bien!!
This indeed grounds this couple chronologically, which places their marriage ca. 1619 or before, perhaps right there in San Luis Potosí. Are there marriages for San Luis Potosí during this time? Maybe not microfilmed (?) or archived somewhere else??
As I do for all actas and sources, I transcribed it. So here you go:
Acta bautismal de Francisca de Aguirre y Ornelas - 19 Febrero 1620, San Luis Potosí, S.L.P.
[Foja 79 frente] "1620 a.s

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1951-20421-26246-39?cc=1860864…
Interesting to note are the padrinos, Miguel Márquez y Catalina Sánchez - relationship unknown. Let us not immediately assume they were married, so who knows. And hmmmh...Márquez!?!? Francisca's mother, Leonor de Ornelas y Mendoza had a sister named María de Ornelas y Mendoza, who was married to Joseph Márquez. They baptized a child on 6 May 1617 in San Luis Potosí, named Diego Márquez, and his padrinos were Juan de Olivares y Anna de Mendoza. Assuming Miguel Márquez and Joseph Márquez were closely related begs the question...Exactly how? Maybe brothers or cousins. This might help shed some light on the Márquez genealogy.
There may also be other children and relatives of Martín de Aguirre “el Viejo” y Leonor de Ornelas y Mendoza in the San Luis Potosí archive...more Aguirre, Márquez, Ornelas, or Mendoza people. Does anyone know if the early San Luis Potosí testamentos are available online?
The Francisca de Aguirre y Ornelas in the baptismal record later does not appear in the 1649 padron...she may have died before 1649 or indeed have gotten married.
Again...BUEN TRABAJO!!!

Aguirre in San Luis Potosi protocolos
As Mariano González-Leal mentioned in his chapter on the Aguirre surname (Retoños, Tomo II, pp. 89-102) there are many Aguirre lines. I have not researched this family, but when Manny mentioned San Luis Potosi I decided to check my notes:

...que hoy son vivos y otros que Dios ha llevado
This was extracted from the original protocolos in SLP. Section A3, 1643, 4 en 1643 to 10 ju 1643, p.42. Ten years later we meet up with Catalina in the SLP protocolos of Pedro de Avalos, Section A3, 1653, 28 jul 1653:
Yo Catalina de Aguirre vda de (1)Gonzalo Patiño y (2) Juan Dias. Both deceased.
I’ve typed this pretty much as I scribbled. English and Spanish, whichever was easier at the moment. Those were heady days. I was thrilled to be in the archives and wrote like lightning during my limited time.

Sebastian Vasquez de Lara and Luisa de Liebana
This is the IM for Sebastian Vasquez de Lara and Luisa de Liebana, 18 Mar 1658. This is Sebastian's IM, and it was done in Villa de Lagos, so there's no info on Luisa de Liebana, other than she was a resident of Tangaciquaro, in provincia de Michoacan. It's the only document that I have found that names Diego Magdaleno cc Lorensa de Liebana:

Los americanos en las órdenes nobiliarias
Hi Danny,
I reference that book and discredit the Magdaleno entry at the beginning of this thread. The Magdaleno genealogy given in that book is incorrect, and is based on a false limpieza de sangre, carried out in 1651. You can read my argument at the beginning of the thread.
Thanks,
Manny Diez Hermosillo
Los americanos en las órdenes nobiliarias
Sorry Manny, I didn't realize it was a false book.
Danny C. Alonso
Los americanos en las órdenes nobiliarias
Hi Danny,
No worry - the rest of the book is probably accurate, it’s just that one entry, and like I said, it was based on a limpieza de sangre, written 350+ years ago. There was no reason to think that the limpieza was false, until I noticed that it contradicted what I was seeing in the Morelia de Mich archives, and at PARES-AGIS.
Read my initial post (it’s in English, too), I explain my argument, it’s really fascinating. It reminds us that we have to continue verifying our work - and that of others.
Keep up the great work!

DIEGO MAGDALENO cc LORENSA DE LIEBANA Y OBALLE
Hola primos,
Working on the family group of Diego Magdaleno and Lorensa de Oballe y Liebana:
This is the 18 Mar 1658 IM for Luisa de Liebana to Sebastian Vasquez de Lara. She’s daughter of Diego Magdaleno and Lorensa de Liebana:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-KGPP?i=213&wc=3NTD-BZ3
This is the 19 Feb 1661 IM for Maria de Oballe, for her marriage to Juan de Chavez. She’s daughter of Diego Magdaleno and Lorensa de Oballe, Her brother, Tomas Magdaleno, acts as her guardian.
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-5K9D-MR?i=213&wc=3NY4-GP8
DIEGO MAGDALANO DE LIEBANA
Here’s Diego Magdaleno de Liebana, as a testigo on 30 Oct 1661, in Zacatula, Gro, where he’s Teniente de Alcalde Mayor. He gives his age as 46 poco mas o menos, placing his birth around 1615. The contrayentes are Francisco Martin de Ynojosa and Beatriz Naselo, daughter of Nicolas de Avila Calderon and Beatriz Naselo. Diego Magdaleno de Liebana says he’s married to the bride’s sister:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-5K9X-RT?i=428&wc=3NY4-GP8
This is a notificacion, dated 26 May 1679, which names Diego Magdaleno de Liebana as administrador de la Hacienda del Rosario, I suppose in Coahuayutla, Gro, since that’s where he’s living:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939L-8C9M-9M?i=559&wc=3NTX-7M3
On 30 May 1679, Hacienda del Rosario, Diego Magdaleno de Liebana explains how he received a deposit:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939L-8CBL-B?i=577&wc=3NTX-7M3
Here is Diego Magdaleno de Liebana, as Teniente de la Villa de Zacatula, certifying the 1683 padron, on 26 Apr 1683:

I imagine this Diego Magdaleno de Liebana is son of Diego Magdaleno and Lorensa de Liebana, for obvious reasons. From given genealogies, he would be the same who married Mariana de Aguirre, and appearing in the Jalos padrones, between 1672 and Apr 1679, and who was known as Don Diego Magdaleno. It’s possible he’s the same Diego Magdaleno, and Mariana de Aguirre is his second wife, the timeline allows it; he would be around 57, when he married Mariana de Aguirre, and in his mid-70’s, when their last child is born. But how can he be a resident in Jalos in Apr 1679, and a resident in Coahuayutla, Gro, one month later, in May 1679, which is 280+ miles away? So, I’m having my doubts that Diego Magdaleno de Liebana and Don Diego Magdaleno are the same person. From their timelines, It’s just as likely that they are father and son. Has anyone seen any documentation that Don Diego Magdaleno cc Mariana de Aguirre was son of Diego Magdaleno and Lorensa de Liebana? Then if he is, who is this Diego Magdaleno de Liebana?
Saludos!

Magdaleno
Hi Manny,
I think we all just assumed Diego Magdaleno married to Mariana de Aguirre was the son of Diego Magdaleno and Lorenza de Liebana. But, since Diego Magdaleno and Mariana de Aguirre are at the top of the tronco on all the dispensas, there's no way to know for sure without more documentation.

DIEGO MAGDALENO cc LORENSA DE LIEBANA Y OBALLE
Hola prim@s,
It’s easy to presume that Don Diego Magdaleno is son of Diego Magdaleno cc Lorensa de Oballe y Liebana, since his children used “Oballe,” and he even had a daughter named Lorensa de Oballe. But that just proves that he descends from them; from his timeline, he could be their grandson. Hopefully, something will turn up!
What we do know about Diego Magdaleno cc Lorensa de Oballe y Liebana, is that they were residents of Tangancicuaro, which is just outside of Zamora, Mich. And we have them with 3 confirmed children: Tomas Magdaleno, Luisa de Liebana and Maria de Oballe. This Diego Magdaleno is supposedly the son of Geronimo Magdaleno de Mendoza and Cecilia Patiño de Herrera (though I’ve seen no documentation supporting this…).
These are from the Morelia, Mich tax archives. From the timeline, this is either Diego Magdaleno cc Lorensa de Oballe, or Diego Magdaleno de Liebana ("DML"), or both. The 1636 & 1637 entries are for Tlazazalca & Zamora (Tangancicuaro is just outside of Zamora, and south of Tlazazalca). The 1643 is for Zacatula, where we know DML was teniente de Alcalde Mayor (and which is 173 miles south of Tangancicuaro):
1636 Diezmos Tlazazalca y Zamora: Diego Magdaleno 2f de trigo

1637 Diezmos, Tlazazalca y Zamora: Diego Magdaleno 4f de trigo, 2f de maiz

DIEGO MAGDALENO DE LIEBANA
This is Diego Magdaleno de Liebana, in the 1680 padron for Zacatula. He’s listed as a widower; living with him are Maria de Avila and her husband, Juan de la Vega Maldonado; Beatriz de Avila doncella, Diego Magdaleno “El Moso,” Nicolas Magdaleno “El Moso,” and Laureano, Antonio and Feliz. Maria and Beatriz de Avila are likely his daughters, taking their surname from their deceased mother, who we now know was daughter of Nicolas de Avila Calderon and Beatriz Nacelo.
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939L-8C99-TD?i=413&wc=3JM7-C6D
This is from the 1684 Padron for Zacatula, Hacienda del Rosario; listed amongst the solteros are Diego Magdaleno, y “otro” Diego Magdaleno. One of them is likely “El Moso,” listed in the 1680 padron:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939L-DX92-H3?i=169&wc=3JMN-GP8
It would be logical that Diego Magdaleno “El Moso” is son of DML. Seeing how there was a Nicolas Magdaleno “El Moso,” would imply that there was a Nicolas Magdaleno “El Viejo.” I’ve seen no record of a Nicolas Magdaleno, as of yet, but he could be a brother or an uncle of DML. Nicolas “El Moso” might be his son, or a son of DML, named in his honor.
I don’t think Diego Magdaleno de Liebana, nor Diego Magdaleno “El Moso,” nor the “otro” Diego Magdaleno, are Don Diego Magdaleno cc Mariana de Aguirre, since these two appear in the 1672, 1673 and 1679 padrones for Jalostotitlan.
As I was saying, it would make sense that Diego Magdaleno de Liebana is son of Diego Magdaleno cc Lorensa de Oballe y Liebana, since he uses their surnames. Another possible source of the ”Magdaleno de Liebana” surname are Diego Magdaleno de Mendoza and Ana Gutierrez de Liebana, who was son of Francisco Magdaleno and Elvira de Mendoza, and brother of Geronimo Magdaleno de Mendoza. As far as I know, they had only 3 sons, all who became clerics: Fray Juan de Liebana, Fray Diego Madaleno and Beneficiado Gonzalo Magdaleno de Liebana. It’s possible that they had other children.
There were just so many “Diego Magdaleno’s,” and with so many archives, being un-indexed, it’s hard to track them! I have not been able to locate Zacatula, nor its parish archives. Does anyone know where they are? As far as I can tell, Zacatula is now called La Union, and is in the state of Guerrero. Coahuayutla is not far. The archives in La Union don’t go back very far, so those pueblos must’ve been administered by a neighboring parish during the 1600’s. Anyone?
Gracias y Saludos!

DIEGO MAGDALENO DE MENDOZA
Hola prim@s,
This is the capellania founded by Diego Magdaleno cc Ana Gutierrez de Liebana, son of Francisco Magdaleno and Elvira de Mendoza, dated 14 Apr 1609, Valladolid, Mich. It's first patron is his oldest son, Padre Gonzalo Magdaleno de Liebana. He also mentions a Luis Magdaleno, though there is no mention of Fray Juan de Liebana or Fray Diego Madaleno, who are his known sons (perhaps he is one of them?). Elvira de Mendoza and Regidor Geronimo Magdaleno de Mendoza appear on image451:

TOMAS MADALENO
Tomas Madaleno (how he signed his name) was son of Diego Magdaleno and Leonor de Oballe y Liebana. He was married to Juana de Chavez, Mestiza, and they had a daughter named Antonia Magdaleno. Antonia Magdaleno married Baltasar Rodriguez, here is their IM, Jun 1670, Penjamo. Tomas Magdaleno appears as Antonia's guardian on img754:
