I subscribe to a newsletter from Replacements.com, and recently they had an article about antique chocolate pots, and it included the history of chocolate. I was intrigued by a recipe they included:
"the original cocoa beverage comes from the Mayans and Aztecs, and was often a mixture of ground cocoa beans, water, wine, and peppers. It did not take long for the Spaniards to begin heating this blend and sweetening it with sugar to suit their tastes".
"the first published recipe for a chocolate drink was published in Spain---"A Curious Treatise of the Nature of Quality of Chocolate" by Antonio Colmenero de Ledesma in 1644. The recipe called for 100 cacao beans, 2 chiles, a handful of anise, "Ear Flower", one vanilla pod, 2 ounces of cinnamon, twelve almonds or hazelnuts, one pound of sugar, and Achiote (annatto seeds to color the drink) to taste. All of these ingredients were boiled together and then frothed with a molinillo, a traditional Aztec carved wooden tool".
Up here in the Northwest where I live, it is especially cold in the winter, so I enjoy a cup of Mexican hot chocolate, but I don't follow the recipe above which sounds labor-intensive with all that grinding, finding and purchasing of several exotic ingredients, etc. (what in the world is "ear flower"?). I find it convenient to just buy the tablets of Ibarra brand manufactured at the Chocolatera de Jalisco in Guadalajara. All it contains is sugar, cocoa, and cinnamon. Some of my cousins prefer the Abuelita brand, but I bet that old Spanosh recipe made by scratch would be wonderful (except for maybe the chiles in it---some Kahlua would be better).
I recall my mother making hot Mexican chocolate and using one of those wooden molinillos which was just a stick with a bulbous end with wooden rings around the bottom. She would rub the stick between her palms to froth the drink. I often wonder what happened to that little molinillo.

I have come against a brick wall with the Vallarta Family from Hostotipaquillo, Jalisco.
I am trying to find the ancestors of Dimas Vallarta, who may be the son of Rafael Vallarta and Maria Michaela Palacio.
Dimas (son of Rafael and Ma. Michaela) had a hija natural by Sebastiana Olmeda, Genoveva, baptized 3 Jan 1843; he also had two more children by Manuela Alba, Maria Juana Guadelupe (bapt 13 Jun 1853) and Maria Lina (bapt 24 Sep 1854).
I believe this same Dimas had a son, Siriaco born abt 1856/61, with spouse Bibiana Guevarra. I do not know if they were married.
Siriaco married Jacinta Coronel, date unknown, and had at least six children baptized in Hostotipaquillo between 1881 and 1902.
There is an upper class Vallarta family in Hostotipaquillo, who are usually named as Don/Dona in the records, but I am unable to place neither Dimas nor Rafael in this family. None of the few references I have found refer to Dimas or his father, Rafael, as Don. Thus, I suspect this is a different family.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Nuestros ranchos,I have come to a road block with my grandparents on my mothers side of the family. My grand father Lucio Carrillo was born in Tepechitlan, Zacatcas around 1899. He made several border crossings from Zacatecas to Laredo, Texas between 1920 and 1942.He may have married my grand mother Agustina Romero ( de Carrillo) around 1910. Agustina was born in or around Zacatecas, Zacatecas around the year of 1893. I have only one record of her crossing the border with Lucio in 1945 as a married couple. I am looking for confirmation of birth, baptismal or marriage records for both.
Agustina's mothers name was Jesusa Romero also assumed born in Zacatecas, Zacatecas. Jesusa Romero was known in the family to have American Indian roots as well.

Hola compañeros, alguno de ustedes sabe donde se encuentra el lugar llamado Rincón de León? En un principio creí que era León, Guanajuato pero tengo dudas sobre ello ya que el acta donde encontré este nombre es la información matrimonial de un Ramírez de Hermosillo casado con una López de Elizalde. El acta se encuentra en Arandas. Además los apellidos tienen origen alteño por lo cual no me convence Guanajuato como lugar de Rincón de León. Necesito encontrar ese lugar para saber donde buscar mas datos que necesito sobre la pareja mencionada.

Soy un miembro nuevo con cero experiencia en el tema de la Genealogía y por lo pronto, solo estoy interesado en investigar el origen de mi apellido Paterno(línea directa Paterna), Hernandez. Cuando adquiera madurez y experiencia, me enfocaré en mis otras ramas genealógicas. Mi abuelo paterno, J. Samuel Hernandez, nació en El Fraile (municipio de Ayotlan (Ayo el chico)), Jalisco en 1910, tuvo varios hermanos/as, de los cuales algunos aun viven. Basado en el acta de bautismo de mi Abuelo (J. Samuel); Sus Padres fueron: J. Refugio Hernandez Ayala y Maria Cruz Ruiz Soria, Abuelos Paternos: José Ysabel Hernandez y Maria Refugio Ayala, Abuelos Maternos: Casildo Ruiz y Maria Refugio Soria. Entre aproximadamente 1920 y 1930, mi Bisabuelo, J. Refugio, y toda la familia, emigró al norte del estado de Michoacán. Ya para el censo Mexicano de 1930, ellos residían en San Gregorio (municipio de Pajuacaran) Michoacán.
Estoy teniendo dificultad en encontrar el acta de bautismo de mi bisabuelo, J. Refugio. Ya lo busqué en los archivos de la iglesia de Ayotlan, pero no lo encuentro, es muy probable que el haya nacido en San Antonio (San Antonio de Rivas?) en el municipio de La Barca, Jalisco, Ya que encontré a tres posibles hermanas, hijas de J. Ysabel Hernandez y Maria Refugio Ayala. Ellas son: Eulalia nacida en 1870, Yrinea en 1875, y Saturnina en 1883, todas ellas nacidas en San Antonio, La Barca, Jalisco. Encontré el acta de bautismo de J. Ysabel Hernandez nacido en 1841 en San Antonio, La Barca Jalisco. También encontré a dos posibles hermanos de Antonio Hernandez (Papá de J. Ysabel), ellos son José Victorino nacido en el Rancho de Texas (Municipio de La Barca Jalisco) en 1788 y José Marcial nacido en el Rancho de Tejas(Texas) (Municipio de La Barca Jalisco) en 1802. J. Victorino y J. Marcial son hijos de José de los Santos Hernandez y Maria Gertrudis Aguilera, también Antonio es hijo de ellos, pero al igual que con el acta de bautismo de J. Refugio, tampoco he podido encontrar la de Antonio.
Nota: Toda esta información que he proporcionado está basada en actas de bautismo y el censo Mexicano de 1930 solamente.
Ahora mi misión es encontrar el acta de bautismo de J. También necesito encontrar más información de Antonio Hernandez, posible hermano de J. Marcial y J. Victorino, e hijos de Jose de los Santos Hernandez y Maria Gertrudis Aguilera.

at one time you could put a wild card in the given name slot on Family search but that doesn't seem to work any more.. Has anyone found something that will work.. I certainly would make it easier to research a surname for given amount of time.

I have a great grandfather Francisco Acosta, born in Gomez, Zac 1818 (died 1882 in Monte Escobedo, Zac) He married Maria Ysabel Ruedas, born in San Ramon, Zac 1826, (died 1891 in Laborcita) They married in Monte Escobedo Zac in 1847.
They had a son Jesus Acosta born in 1854 in Monte Escobedo and died in 1940 there also. I heard thru family members that he married Maria Cleofas Minjarez in 1875 in Monte Escobedo.
But I was looking thru Baptismal records and found another Jesus Acosta with another wife named Margarita Sanchez. This Jesus Acosta had the same parents. And this Jesus Acosta had a daughter by the name of Margarita Acosta born in 1910 in Bieneguitas, Zac. (Margarita's parents were Esteban Sanchez and Tomas Ruedas)
I'm sure these are 2 different people otherwise he fathered a child at the age of 56. I wouldn't say that's impossible, but very unlikely.

I have reached a stalemate in my ancestry search. Although am researching many branches currently it seems that some (the poorer) branches are nearly impossible. My fathers family who were extremely poor are proving very difficult to find, I have only been able to locate records to the beginning of the 20th century. Is this common in families of lower economic status? If so what do I do, where do I look? or is this something I need a professional genealogist for?
Any advice is appreciated.

He llegado a un punto muerto en mi búsqueda de la ascendencia. Aunque estoy investigando muchas ramas en actualidad, parece que algunas ramas (las más pobres) son casi imposibles. La familia de mi padre que eran muy pobres, están demostrando ser muy difíciles de encontrar, sólo he sido capaz de localizar los registros al comienzo del siglo 20. Esto es común en las familias de baja condición económica? Si es así, ¿qué hago, dónde busco? O esto es algo que necesito un genealogista profesional para resolver?

Ojala que alguien me pueda ayudar traducir este certificado de defunción, de Cayetana Espinosa, primera esposa de mi bisabuelo (x3). Entiendo que dice los nombres de los dos y en seguido "de 40 años", se supone que es su edad de ella o el (como ya he visto varias contradicciones de edad en otros registros). Cualquier otro detalle para el marido Cecilio, o causa de muerte de la senora, sería apreciada.

I am hoping that someone can help me translate this death record, for Cayetana Espinosa first wife of my great (x3) grandfather. I understand that it says her & his name followed by "40 years old", is that supposed to be his or her age (as I have seen several contradictions of age in other records). Any other details for the husband Cecilio, or cause of death for the wife would be appreciated.

I am reserching Francisco De Luna His wife is Maria De Tapia born in Tlatenango, Zacatecas on 1637, they had a son named Luise De luna Born in 1624 In Tlatenango, Zacatecas .
I cant seem to find any info on Francisco De Luna. Most of my ancesters are found in Arroyo Hondo, Tepechitlan, Tlatenango and El Teul, Zacatecas. I am assuming that Francisco might of came from colima or Guadalajara. Any Info or web site you might have will be helpfull. Francisco De Luna is my 10 great grnd father.
Question, Is this telling me that fransico De Luna died on 17 Oct 1637 or his wife? (TAPIA María DE, mujer de FRANCISCO DE LUNA, español, vecinos del pueblo de Tlaltenango, donde murió la susodicha el 17 de octubre de 1637. )
