Mexico Border Crossing Records and Petition Papers

Joseph,

The book "Mexican-American
Genealogical Research: Following the Paper Trail to Mexico", by John
Schmal & donna Morales,  has some great chapters about
"Naturalization Records", "Alien Registration Records", and "Crossing the
Border".

Hello Everyone,

Though my family ties are not from the states that are usually
mentioned here, I want to learn from and hopefully help others trying
to research their Hispanic roots.

I've noticed a couple of members who have like surnames and
desperatly hope a link can be established. The names I am researching
at this point are: de la Garza, Noriega, Flores and Gonzalez.

My grandmother was Carmen de la Garza de Gonzalez. She was born
in Chihuahua City in September of 1878 to Melchor de la Garza and
Lucrecia Flores. Other siblings were Rosa ( born in Rio
Florido,Sonora, Aug 1884), Melchor, Philipe, Pedro and Jose Maria.
I'm afraid I don't know any of the men's dates of birth or the
parents.

Carmen married Jose Federico Gonzalez (date unknown) who was
possibly from Gomez Palacio. Their only surviving child was my
grandmother, Maria Luisa Gonzalez who was born about 1909-1913 in
Gomez Palacio, Durango, MX.

Rosa de la Garza married Timoteo Gonzalez

But your situation brings up a leaning opportunity for others (me included). Would you mind giving us a few sentences on how you obtained your fathers petition papers? Also do you or anyone else in the group know how to get border crossing info?

=============================================

No, I don't mind providing you the information you request above regarding the petition papers.  And there have been a couple of email notes identifying some of the web sites that provide info on border crossing....I'll see if I kept that info.  I'll do it next week.

Joseph,
the only reason I have is that I have not been able to find out where
my father was born, or when -- other than Mexico by the Texas border.
Recently, I obtained a copy of his petition papers to become a U.S.
Naturalized Citizen.  I also now have some names of his brothers and
sisters (but no birth

Mi Prima Rosalinda

It does seem like a small world. For about 30 plus of us in this
group and we are finding relatives in common. Seems very unlikely
but its happening.

Here is a list of the people I have been able to connect to, (hope I
didn't forget anyone):

*Arnoldo Garcia - Carrion-Cardenas (4C1R); Miramontes-Gaeta (5C);
Campos-Huerta (5C); Covarrubias-Ponse (8C)

*Rosalinda Ruiz - Grano-Covarrubias (7C); Soto-Salazar (7C1R); Gaeta-
Almeda (7C1R)

*Stella (similar to Rosalinda with one exception) - Grano-Covarrubias
(7C); Soto-Salazar (7C1R); Gaeta-Almeda (7C1R); Perez-Haro (5C1R)

*Roseholly - Gaeta-Mayorga (6C2R)

*Joseph Puentes - Romero-Noriega (7C1R)

Roseholly, since you (or your son) are related to my Gaeta-Mayorga
line, which is a descendant of my Gaeta-Almeda line, you are then
also related to Rosalinda and Stella. You are also related to
Arnoldo since the Miramontes-Gaeta line descends from the Gaeta-
Mayorga line. The five of us all descend from the same Gaeta family
just at

I am in the process of using Family Tree Maker to enter this newly acquired info, but as I mentioned, all I have is names.  Is that sufficient?

okay we're doing pretty good. I just counted and 28 out of the 58
members have sent me their genealogies. I won't be happy until we have a
bare minimum of 75%.

In 6 months we will meet this goal.

set your calendars for March 1, 2004.

submit your genealogies.

Great Diccionario On Line

a while back Maria Cortez sent us this website URL:
http://biblio2.colmex.mx/bibdig/dicc_cubas/base3.htm

I would strongly urge those of us in the group that consider themselves
"beginning" genealogists to pay a close visit to this great Diccionario.

One way I am using it is to find the Main City or town close to my area
of research and looking it up. You'll find that very many of the small
ranchos are listed under the "cabecera" of the area. Other than the
baptism record [which was good enough by itself] this dictionary and
another I found at Duke University have confirmed that El Rancho de los
Negros where my GG Grandfather Cecilio Puente was born is indeed in the
Villanueva, Zacatecas area.

You can also use this to compare the typed names on the page with any
possible hard to read names on the handwritten documents we are reading.
