I have hit a brick wall and need advice. Looking at old church records for my great grandfather, Teodoro Escobedo, it shows "AP Estevan y Francisca Lozano" which I've always assumed meant his grandparents were Estevan Escovedo and Francisca Lozano (maiden name). However, with the help of that link I put up I found a church record for one of Teodoro's brothers, Enrique, but it was listed as follows: "Enrique Losano" and "AP Estevan Losano y Francisca Lira". It also shows Teodoro's father as a Losano, Gabino Losano, which has confused me. My question is "AP" stands for abuelos paternos right? That would be the grandparents of the person being christened or born, in this case Teodoro right? Or would AP be an older ancestor and am I missing an ancestor? I was told our family came originally from Jalisco but most of these, in fact all, are in Zacatecas which I knew we also came from, just not this far back. Were there a lot of mistakes on the old church records? They have always seemed to verify what I was told by my grandfather and this has confused me. Thanks for any advice or help.

Thick Brick Wall!!! lol
I too have found this problem in the Zacatecas records. It seems people there (Tepetongo) used several surnames interchangeably. Abuelos paternos means paternal grandparents, the baby's father's parents.
Both men and women in some cases used their mother's surnames interchangeably with their father's surnames for some reason. I found one way around it; I would look for the records of the siblings of the baby, and see what names were given for the paternal and maternal grandparents, then I would use the one that they used most of the time, especially if it followed the paternal line. Also check for the records for the baptisms of the baby's parents to see what names they gave for their grandparents. Does that make sense?

Thanks Emile
Emile, that does help. It has been confusing at times with the surnames changing so often. I tried searching surnames and it does help. By the way did you see my other post about the website where you can view actual church documents??? It's pretty neat.
Thanks Emile
Yes, I have seen that website. Before Family Search started putting their microfilms online, we had to go to a Family History Center at the local Mormon church and send for the films, then when they came we had to use their microfilm viewers to view each film The film numbers appear on the index in that website. Most of us here have viewed the microfilms tediously for years, and it is great that they are now online. We can hardly wait til they get to Jalisco and Zacatecas. It seems they are putting up each state in alpha order, so Aguascalientes is already online. You have come in to Family Search website at a good time.

Zacatecas records already online
Hi Emilie,
They already have online a lot of records form Zacatecas and just a few from Jalisco in the Beta site. They are under "Mexico Catholic Church Records". Aguascalientes is under "Mexico Civil Registration".

And yes, the BETA site is pretty cool... unless you compare it with it's predecessor, the PILOT site ;)

Zacatecas records already online
Victoriano,
Do you or other members know if it's possible to download one or all image files in the Beta Site. I'd like to be able to download all records pertaining to Jalpa, Zacatecas, or any other site location for that matter. The reason for this is that you never know when "something" happens and these records might become unavailable for whatever reason. I'd like having the satisfaction of knowing I can control and access these records at any time without having to go online.

saving files from BETA
Hi Ruben,
Yes, you can download the images, one at a time. There is a "Save" buttom at the top of the image. However, all are dowloaded with the same name, so you have to change the name of each one. Make sure you can open the image after changing the name. You can change the name of the file while saving it, this is one of the few advantages Beta has over the much better Pilot.
This is an example of the names I give my saved files:
"0605211 B SM Parras 1760_1764 Juana Perez.jpg"
Where 0605211 is the number of the original microfilm, B indicates Baptisms, SM is the church of Santa María, Parras is the town, 1760_1764 are the years that Beta collection covers and finally the name of the person(s) in the document.
Other examples:
0035167 BEsp AsSgo DF 1536_1546 1552_1589 Jph Treviño.jpg
0605234 M SM Parras 1785_1796 McosFlores MicPerez.jpg
By the way, Aguascalientes is both under "Mexico Catholic Church Records" and "Mexico Civil Registration". They may (or not) upload more records next week and they plan to upload more every month or so by the middle of the month. If you don't see the records for the town you are looking for, you can go to Feedback, ask them to upload them next time and cross your fingers ;)
Good luck!

Ruben,
I was able to print copies of the few Zacatecas records for Tlachichila last
night from the Beta site.
Good Luck,
Alicia
