Be Mindful of your message titles - Cuidado con los titulos de sus mensajes

(Espanol sigue abajo)

Please be mindful of your message titles. Recently there have been a number of messages posted with titles that are inappropriate or cause technical difficulties on the website.

Message titles are the principal means by which the search engine works so when a title is not descriptive, members will have trouble finding the message in the future. Messages should never be sent with no title (or e-mail subject if you are submitting by email).

Also if you are responding to a digest message PLEASE change the subject to something descriptive. "Announce Digest, Vol. 3, No. 12" says nothing about what the content or subject of the message is.

Finally, use words with spaces in between. If a message is submitted with a title that has no spaces and more than 15 or so, such as a website address or URL, the Nuestros Ranchos website will be unable to fit the message title on the sidebar and will push all of the menu blocks (including the signing block) down to the bottom of the page.

Thank you for your cooperation in making Nuestros Ranchos a useful and successful community!

==ESPANOL==

Welcome Rosa

Thank you so much for taking the time to give me your valuable suggestions.
I felt that I was in a dead end trying to locate my mother's family since
the information that I have is very limited. I am using rootsmagic
software, do you still recommend me to use the PAF software. I foud how to
search for films, but I have not found the IGI or VRI buttons. Thank you
very much for your help, Rosa

We are the Mitchells I am Irma Romo Mitchell Dave's wife

My name is Irma Romo Mitchell. My husband and I have just recently become Nuestros Members. My husband is the geneology guru. I just happen to be his Hispanic / Mexican American wife - maiden named Romo from the Romo De Vivar from Spain then Mexico.

Dave is "Un Gotita" Spanish form around the year 700, however his love for the culture, food, tequilas, and beer amazes me. Just kidding - his love for family history is genuine and we Thank you for welcoming us into your email family. See you on March 17, 2007.

Signed,

Mrs "Un Gotita"

Before Flying to Zacatecas

Unfortunately for Mercedes and for anyone else doing research in Jalpa, Jalpa's records are very skimpy, probably lost during wars, fires and civil unrest but some of the other municipalities that are nearby (might) have some records for Jalpa. In my research primarily for Nochistlan but also in Jalpa I have found some of Jalpa's records in with Nochistlan, not many......................and Arturo is correct, the best place to do your research is through the family history centers, going to the town you might get some oral history but you won't get much in terms of birth, baptism or marriage records unless you have exact names with the exact birth, baptism or marriage dates.

Good luck Mercedes

Mercedes:

I am sure that a trip to Jalpa would be a great learning experience but as many members will tell you, going to the locality is not necessarily the best way to do genealogical research.

For one, the best genealogical records in Mexico are church records and many priests are very reticent about letting people look at them especially for broad research. Many civil records have been lost or are very disorganized in the towns as well and often the state capitals are the only places where you can find records.

That being said, the Family History Library has films for Jalpa that should probably be where you should begin your search. Just go to http://www.familysearch.org and look up the nearest family history center to you where you can go and order and view the films.

New to the listserv

Dear Group Members:

I am new to this listserv and new to the genealogical investigation.
Consequently, I know that I will need your guidance. I have been very
impressed with the discussions. I am interested in the following areas: Los
Altos, Jalisco (De Leon, Trujillo), Arandas and Guadalajara, Jalisco
(Garcia), La Yesca, Tepic, Nayarit and Guadalajara (Macias, Perez). Thank
you very much for your help, Rosa E.

Arturo,

Thanks for posting the samples from the Indice (#0269867).

Just from browsing the scans you put up, I found several of the surnames in my husband's ancestry.

So, how do you know which subsequent film to order, since the indice only has a number and name for the fundacion [?], and the name of the agraciado [?], but no date of the land grant.

Brother's DNA

Yes, you are correct. In trying to simplify my explanation, I
neglected to add that information. Thank you for adding it. If a
male submits a DNA sample it can be tested for both his Y-DNA and
mtDNA, giving the Haplogroups for both his mother and father.

Carta abierta a Don Mariano González Leal

Atentamente,

Guillermo Figueroa Strecker

DNA results for surname Castanon

The results for our surname Castanon DNA came back today. They are R1B1, considered European.. What a mix we are when our ancestors are from Mexico! My maternal MTDNA is Native American, Haplogroup A, my mothers Gutierrez line done through her brother came back Eurasian, Haplogroup N and now a European ancestor.. Doing the genealogy also have given me 3 lines of Mulato ancestors in the mid 1600's in Jalisco, Zacatecas and Michoacan.. I am everything Mexico has to offer! Just thought I'd share the results.

Here are some Alvarado people from Zacatecas who ended moving to
Durango and Coahuila. Most of them came to work in the area of la
Laguna betwen Coahuila and Durango.

Many came from Zacatecas to work in the mining area in San Juan de
Guadalupe, Durango and Coahuila area which is just across the Aguanaval
river.

In San Juan de Guadalupe there are many people who came from Zacatecas
starting in the early 1700s. I hope this helps somebody.

Just to let you all know. In a few weeks, I will start teaching a
weekly online genealogy class, probably on Hispanic Research, at
www.familyhistoryliveonline.com . It will be a 30 minute class. So, if
anyone is interested in learning more, let me know.

Also, I can teach other classes at anytime, or maybe schedule to have
group conference.

Ruiz de Esparza family of Aguascalientes

'The Ruiz de Esparza family is a well-known Basque family that settled in Aguascalientes at the beginning of the Seventeenth Century. The surname Esparza is said to mean one who came from Esparza (a barren place or a place where feather grass grew) in Spain. The word was derived from the Latin sparsus (spread abroad, scattered), probably referring to land that yields little. Esparza is the name of a village near Pamplona in Navarra (Navarre), España (Spain).

I read this article in the Somos Primos and I think that a lot of the Esparza is still there in the Jalisco, Zacatecas, and/or Aguascalientes area...thanks.....Phyls

It is very likely that the Ruiz de Esparza family of Aguascalientes could trace its roots back to that small village. The patriarch of this family in Mexico was Lope Ruiz de Esparza, who is documented by the Catalogo de Pasajeros a Indias (Vol. III - #2.633) as having sailed from Spain to Mexico on Feb. 8, 1593. Lope, who was the son of Lope Ruiz de Esparza and Ana Días de Eguino, was a bachelor and a servant of Doñ Enrique Maleon. After arriving in Mexico, Lope made his way to Aguascalientes where, about a year later, he is believed to have married Francisca de Gabai Navarro y Moctezuma. In the following decades, the Ruiz de Esparza family intermarried extensively with other prominent Spanish families in early Aguascalientes, including Romo de Vivar, Macias Valdez, and Tiscareno de Molina.'

Baptism of Twins

I am sorry, I wanted to ask this question when we were discussing naming twins the same name, but I have not have not have time to visit the site lately and missed my chance. I could not find the link about the twins even in the search. So, I have started a new thread.

I have a set of twins where I knew of the woman through oral history with my mother-in-law and also later through an obituary from California where it listed her birth date. Her name was Herminia. I was researching the family in Valle de Guadalupe only to find not the baptism of Herminia, but of a Jose Domingo, Herminia's brother. Jose Domingo had a birthdate the exact date of Herminia's birth on her obit. Herminia was not listed anywhere on the microfilm. My mother-in-law had not mentioned Herminia as being a twin nor of any Jose Dominigo. Is it possible that the practice was to baptize only one of the twins? I find this hard to believe, but would they baptize one child in one church and choose another church for the other? Just wondered if there were practices for twins that I do not know about, especially as there was prior discussion in this group of only one of the twins being officially recognized.

PAF Volunteer Needed

Who in the group is real comfortable using PAF to create reports in .rtf
format? If you have time and the willingness to volunteer to help other
Nuestros Ranchos members when they are having trouble converting their
PAF files into .rtf documents then please contact me at
NR@JosephPuentes.com I get about one or two requests per month from
various folks that need help with this. This job hopefully isn't one
that will be a big time consumer.

thanks,

joseph
