Introduction, presentación

Hi,

I'm new to nuestros ranchos so I hope I am writing to the correct address and in the correct language (if I'm not I apologize).

I've been working in my family history for 3 years now but mainly in Yucatán and Galicia from where my father's family came from.

Joseph, thank you very much for the welcome and the information.

I usually go to the family history center at Toluca but I do most of my research at the "archivo general de la nación" in Mexico City, they have a copy of almost all the microfilms done by the LDS (regarding Mexico) besides an awful lot of other documents.

I do have a question, I previously sent part of my family tree in a PDF document but included information on living people so I would like to send it again but I'm uncertain if I should do it as a GEDCOM file or other format and if I should send all my data or only that related to Jalisco.

you can send in a gedcom if you like but if you have an option to delete
people that are living that would be best. And your gedcom can include
all your data if you want. gedcom's are optional but you are welcome to
submit them. Let me know what you decide and I'll prepare the gedcom
area for your upload. but I'll only do that if you decide for sure to do
this.

you can do like others and send in several "reports" in word or .rtf
format.

Comentario

To the Ranchos Group:

Although I have been doing research for many years, it
is hard for me to get my findings where I want them to
go. I think I sent this out right but if not, I am
hoping Joseph or Arturo will direct it to the right
place.

If you look in the Ramon GODINEZ file, you will be
able to see my latest contribution(s). Perhaps this
is the SOLORIO that Jorge GOMEZ Montenegro needs.

Sincerely,
Diane in San Diego

Hi Joseph, I've looked a little bit more into the site and it seems I can change the published file by myself, so I think I'll keep it as a PDF file just removing the information of those living.

Thank you.

you can send in a gedcom if you like but if you have an option to delete
people that are living that would be best. And your gedcom can include
all your data if you want. gedcom's are optional but you are welcome to
submit them. Let me know what you decide and I'll prepare the gedcom
area for your upload. but I'll only do that if you decide for sure to do
this.

you can do like others and send in several "reports" in word or .rtf
format.

volvieron a ver.

Afectuosamente

Rodolfo.

Joseph,

I just signed up to help with the indexing. When you are ready to start the pre-colonial records I would like to be a part of that project. In the past I helped to index census records for Mexico under Lyman Platt who worked at the family history library at that time. I also worked for about ten years under Lily Kuntz at the ancestral file at the family history library in Salt Lake City. I also was given permisssion to extract the Ventura Mission records in California. Many of my ancestors are on these films. The film also caught up the Chumush Indians that lived there.

Sincerely,
Irene(Kelly) Sweet

Just got this press release in: Get involved, if they get even more
people working on this than the 10,000 indexers they are seeking, the
projects described will be completed that much faster. Some do more
than just one batch a week, sometimes much more, how much one does is
up to you. The website to sign up to do indexing and download the
software mentioned is at this link:

http://www.familysearchindexing.org/

Works best in Windows XP but I'm doing it on a Windows 2000 Pro
machine. Mac and Linux users are also doing indexing as well. The
software download is just under 29 megabytes, so you may have to wait
a while if you are on dialup. A batch downloads in about 3 minutes on
dialup also. You can finish a batch on more than one computer, as you
can save your work to the servers as you go. That way, you can do it
on any computer you have the software installed on at any time.

SALT LAKE CITY - FamilySearch - the world's largest repository of
genealogical records - is calling for 10,000 volunteers who can read
both English and Spanish to help index Mexican, Argentine and other
Latin American records for the Internet.

FamilySearch is embarking on a massive initiative to digitally
preserve and index millions of Latin American records that are now
difficult to access because they are located on microfilm or in an
archive.

The first target is the Mexican census of 1930. People interested in
finding their ancestors in that census now have to hunt among 506
rolls of microfilm at a special library. When the project is finished
within about one year from now, people with Mexican ancestry will be
able to search for relatives easily from their computers at home.

The project is being launched in cooperation with the National
Archives of Mexico.

Paul Nauta, manager of public affairs for FamilySearch, said the
volunteers could spend as little as 30 minutes a week indexing records
from their home computers. Volunteers should register at
FamilySearchIndexing.org, which will allow them to download one batch
(one census page) at a time. Volunteers simply type in the information
highlighted on the digital image. Each batch should take about 30
minutes.

The completed product will be a free, fully searchable online index of
the 1930 Mexico Census, and it will be linked to the original images
at FamilySearch.org. Digital images of the original census can be
viewed currently at FamilySearchLabs.org.

"The 1930 census project will be the first fully indexed census for
Mexico," Nauta said. "When finished, the database will be a tremendous
asset to family historians with Mexican roots."

Nauta said that census records are especially valuable because they
include a large portion of the population and can provide details
about individuals which may not be available on some church and civil
records.

"The 1930 Mexico Census is priceless to genealogists because it is the
most recent, publicly accessible census for Mexico. It can provide an
ancestor's age, birth year, religion, birthplace and occupation,
explain an individual's relationship to family members and provide
other family information," Nauta added.

The 10,000 bilingual indexers will be added to a growing army of
volunteers that will soon top 100,000, well ahead of year-end targets.

Over the past months, FamilySearch has been preparing digital images
of the various census pages and many other records for placement on
the Internet. However, without an index for the material, family-tree
enthusiasts would still have to go through the pages one-by-one
looking for their ancestors.

"Once indexed, the records are searchable in seconds, just like
looking up a name in a phone book - except quicker, easier and
online," Nauta said.

The 1930 Mexico Census marks the first Latin American project for the
Web-based FamilySearch Indexing program. In addition, FamilySearch
indexers just completed the Argentina census of 1895 and will soon
start on that country's 1855 census.

A four-year project to digitize historical land and property documents
and wills in Paraguay has just begun, and civil records in Nicaragua
will become part of the indexing program within 30 days.

FamilySearch is a nonprofit organization sponsored by The Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, whose members consider it a
religious obligation to identify their families. FamilySearch
maintains the world's largest repository of genealogical resources,
accessible through FamilySearch.org, the Family History Library in
Salt Lake City and over 4,500 family history centers in 70 countries.

Dear Sir:
I have volunteered to work on the indexing project. I am especially looking forward to work on the pre colonial records. I have been indexing for the last week or two and hoping to hear when we, as members (nuestrosranchos)
start on the project you mentioned.

Thank you

Mary

and Fresnillio, Zac. to be extracted?

Thank you for participating in FamilySearch Indexing for the 1930 Mexico census. We are hoping to initiate a project with the Nuestros Ranchos group in the near future for the Colonial and 19th Century census records for your areas of interest. There are a lot of things that need to happen from our end in order to get a project started...I wish it was as easy as just loading images on a server and delivering them through familysearchindexing.org. Arturo, Joseph, and Mickey will notify everyone when the project will be ready to index. Again, thank you for your efforts on the 1930 Census! Your experience with the 1930 census will help you when the other censuses are ready.

A NEW GENERATION IN MY FAMILY TREE

Hello everybody. It's been a long time since I posted a message on the group. It's been extremely busy. Anyways, I'm just writing to announce (y presumir) that I just added a new generation to my family tree. My daughter Natalie Itzel Apodaca was born on October 11, 2007 in Winston-Salem, NC. She weighed 7 lbs and 1.6 ounces, and measured 20 inches. My wife and I are so happy! Well, I just thought about writing it in this forum, even though there are lots of new members since the last time I posted a message and most haven't read me before.

Hello, I am Hope Gonzalez Martin. I am first generation Mexican American, my parents were both born on the Rancho Buena Vista, Jalisco, as were many of my grandparents and relatives. I am concentrating on my Father's family. I have been able to trace my grandparents back to my gggg grandfather Jose Gertrudis Gonzales. I have used the local library of the LDS to obtain copies of birth, christening and marriage recordings. I think my gggg grandfather Jose Gertrudis was from Spain, the earliest recording I have of him is that he was a witness at my ggggg grandparent marriage in 1802 in the town of Tacotlan, Jal.

Does anyone have San Juan de los Lagos Batch Numbers

Hello Everyone!

Does anyone have the batch numbers for Births for la Iglesia San Bautista, San Juan de los Lagos and for San Miguel el Alto, Jalisco with the years starting at 1882 to 1900.

Thank you for any help!

Sofia,

Most IGI batches end in 1875 (that has been my experience). You typically don't have any batches after this date. I usually do a quick check to make sure, but I can usually count on just ordering the films I need to look page by page. I can ask around, but it appears that this was the cut off date for extraction work. I recommend searching in SJ de los Lagos during the time period you are research and see if any of the results have batch numbers.

Informacion Matrimonial records

Regarding the use of informacion matrimonial records: I feel obligated to point out to new researchers that occasionally these may contain questionable or inaccurate information. In other words, don’t believe everything you read. Ages are not always accurate, people are not necessarily born in the place stated, and a “parent” may actually be a stepparent, or the groom (or bride) is someone’s hijo/a natural, raised in ignorance of this fact.

Can someone tell me the difference

Hello Everyone!

On the list of films to ask for from San Juan de los Lagos there are different choices for marriage.
I just wonder what is the difference between them. Does one have more info then another?

Sofia,

1. Matrimonios - your 'typical' marriage record created when the couple actually got married. If your ancestors married, then a marriage record should have been made for them.

2. Informacion Matrimonial - pre-marriage investigation that the parish priest did before he married the couple. These are usually several pages in length (depending on the investigation and the priest they range from a couple of pages to 20 or more pages). This investigation was performed to determine that the marrying parties were in good standing with the Church and that they did not have any Canonical impediments that needed to be dispensed before marriage. All marrying couples should have gone through this process. The actual (#1 above), will indicate whether this was performed. Look for key phrases like: "no haviendo resultado impedimiento alguno" or a reference in the marriage record to an investigation and a page number or date when it took place.

3. Dispensas Matrimoniales - This record was made when the couple had a Canonical impediment, such as, being related within 4 generations (common great-great grandparent) by consanguinity (blood) or affinity (marriage). The dispensa will outline the pre-marriage investigation, and will include the diocesan bishop's permission (dispensa) for the couple to marry. This record should outline or diagram how the couple was related. I'm 99% sure that these were also called diligencias (petitions) and exortos as well. I think it depended on the time period, and the person creating the record, and the person cataloging them in the FHLC. George R. Ryskamp's book: Finding Your Hispanic Roots should help you with any distinctions too...I don't have mine with me right now.

As far as which ones should you search. You should begin with the regular marriage records, and look for comments, clues, etc. in them that will point you to the marriage informations and dispensas. If you can't find your ancestor in the actual marriage record, then you may want to search the informaciones matrimoniales, because sometimes the actual marriage records may have been lost or destroyed. You will want to be fairly certain that your ancestors married in that parish first though, because they aren't the most fun records to search page by page. Good Luck...I hope others will correct me if I am off on the diligencias and exortos.

Thank you Lynn!

I had asked for a couple of "Informacion matrimonial" and was surprised how they were written because I hadn't noticed the difference. I was so happy I found something that I didn't pay attention.
I think its worth getting both, the more info the better!

Are there any members out there who have programming experience, particularly PHP/MySQL that would like to participate in the technical maintenance of the site?

Banuelos from San Gabriel Valley Families of Nueva Galicia

Hi Joseph

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you on the Banuelos question. These Banuelos start in the late 1700's and it's only a small portion in the Colotlan area. I know your cousin Andy was working on this line a few years ago. These are my cousin, Dave's line....the same primo that is related to you through the Tafoya's and Maldonado's. Dave and I are related 10+ times in Nueva Galicia. It's amazing how just finding one ancestral line into the Romo de Vivars, Tiscarenos, Lomelins, Ruiz de Esparza's, Rubalcava's....etc and one becomes related many times over with someone else. It's mind-boggling at times.

I have done some research leading me to my 3rd great-grandfather, Simon Baez born in Purisima Concepcion de Los Angeles, Noria de Angeles, Zacatecas born in 1825, who married Carmen Longina Obiedo, born El Sagrario Or Santo Domingo, Zacatecas, Mexico in 1842.

My 4th Great-Grandfather is Jose Ygnacio Baez, born in Purisima Concepcion de Los Angeles, Noria de Angeles, Zacatecas, as well, but I'm not sure of the date. This information was from the marriage record of the above-named ancestors. Oh, and Jose Ygnacio was married to Maria Josefa Dias de Leon, but I haven't researched for a while...I stopped to take a spanish class! LOL

I replied because of your "Oviedo" name, I had never heard it before. You think there's a connection?

If its the Oviedo Family there should be a connection, They originally came from Pinos.
The Camino family would only go to Pinos to preform catholic rites but originallly came from the Silver Mines of Fresnillo. The family is supposed to descend from Juan Peres del Camino a top spahish official in la Audencia de Guadalajara. He served for the king as rep or something, I only have the document. its dated 1603. He is grandson of the conquistador Juan del Camino, who in 1542 left for nueva Galicia. in 1528 he recieved a coat of arms from the King. (Source: Gary Felix: The Genealogy of Mexico). -Daniel

No need for Photoshop to get Spanish Archive Images. You can have them emailed to you (up to five images at a time) directly from the site. They are sent as PDFs which you can view with Adobe Acrobat Reader software, which you can download for free.

To get images emailed to you:

1. Go to http://pares.mcu.es/

2. Click on the second option (Busqueda Avanzada)

3. Enter your search terms (in this screen you can limit the search by dates or by particular archive, i.e. Archivo General de Indias)

4. Click the "Buscar" button at the bottom of the page

5. You will get the results summarized by collection, e.g.
# Catálogos de Pasajeros a Indias
# Casa de la Contratación
# Audiencia de Quito
# Contaduría
# Indiferente General
# Escribanía de Cámara de Justicia
Click the relevant collection where you think your document will be found or browse through each one using the "Atras" button to go back to the summary. Using your browser button will not work. Images of licensias para pasar a Indias will be found in the "Casa de Contratacion" collection. Often the listings under the "Catalogo de pasajeros" will cross reference the Contratacion document from where the document was pulled. You can then search for the specific document using the "Busqueda por Signatura" option

6. Click on the camera icon that appears to the right of a document to view the image. Not all documents are yet digitized. The ones that are will have the camera icon.

7. To email the document to yourself, click on the document title from the list instead of the camera. Above the document description there will be several buttons, namely:
# Ver Imagenes (view images)
# Envio telematico (send electronically)
# Codigo de referencia (reference code)
# Imprimir (print)
Click on Envio telematico

8. Enter your email and the page numbers of the pages you would like emailed to you (up to five). You can enter a range, e.g. "1-5" or a comma seperated list, e.g. "1,5,8,10,20" You will obviously have had to see the image and possbily browse through the pages to see which ones you would lke sent to you, or simply keep entering five page ranges until you complete the document.

9. You will receive an email with a PDF attachment of the images you ordered.

Esther,

To join all the pages into one single document you need the full blown
version of Adobe Acrobat. If you only have a few pages (less than 10) I'll
be glad to do it for you. Just email them directly to my address, and tell
me the order in which they should appear. I'll return one multiple page
document for you.

There is also a free PDF creator program called PrimoPDF which I believe allows you to merge multiple PDFs into a single PDF file, as well as allowing you to print PDFs from any software.

Esther,

To open jpg files, you need to make sure you have acrobat (pdf) program.

To view able to view those files you must do the following:

1. open pdf (acrobat) program
2. Click "file open"
3. then change "file type" to ALL FILES
this will allow you to view all documents save on your computer including those jpg.
4. double click on the selected document (jpg)
5. you should be able to view it.

To convert it into pdf, all you need to do is SAVE AS, name your document, and you are set.

Be sure your pdf program is 5 or higher version.

This should work just fine.

Last night my husband and I were on youtube and we did a search for Nochistlan. I discovered there were lots of videos about Nochis. One video was called "Recorriedo Nochistlan" and someone actually drove around Nochis with a video camera in their hand driving up and down streets that were very familiar to me. In another video there were people running around with white powder on their faces (harina and pinole) which of course some of you may know is a very old tradicion called el "Papaqui del Guerito San Sebastian." There are videos which depict other traditions like the "La Coleadera" in Las Animas which is an event I have attended many times, and the Sunday night serenatas in the jardin in Nochistlan.

How exciting to make this unexpected discovery. This is what makes Genealogy so addicting, when you make that discovery that opens up so many doors.

That is also why we should do our own research and if needed back it up or verify through other people's work, studies books etc. There's nothing like having the document in hand.

I wish you continued success.

Subject: [Nuestros Ranchos] Robles Family

Hi, all:

I had received an LDS microfilm No. 238073 of the Jesus Parish Records in
Guadalajara, Jalisco for 1876-1883. I had ordered it to look for the
baptism record for my great-grandmother Francisca Cabral, because in her
marriage record it said that she had lived in the Jesus Parish until she was
one year old. However, her baptism record was not on this particular film.
Thankfully, I went ahead and searched through the entire film, just in
case, though I kept telling myself it was probably a waste of time. Lo and
behold, I found someone I had no idea would be in this record from my Robles
family line. The record is as follows:

Jose Emigdio baptized at Iglesia Parroquial de Jesus, Guadalajara March 12,
1879; born March 11, 1879; legitimate son of Magdaleno Cortes and Jesus
Robles. Paternal grandparents: Antonio Cortes and Caciana Padilla.
Maternal grandparents: Emigdio Robles and Manuela Rivera. Padrinos: Jose
Maria Robles and Manuela Rivera.

Emigdio Robles and Manuela Rivera are my ggg-grandparents, not on the Cabral
side of the family, but the Martin del Campo side. My mother had told
me Emigdio and Manuela had a daughter named Jesus, but this is the first
record I have found of her, so I was very happy about that, plus learning
about whom she married, etc. Jesus would be my gg-grandmother's (Rita's)
sister. I also found another record with the name Catarina Rivera, who
might be Rita's cousin, so this film turned out to be quite helpful for
these reasons and because it appears the Riveras and Robles were well
represented in that parish.

Hi,

I found a second record in the same LDS microfilm of the same family in my
Robles family line. Film No. 238073 of the Jesus Parish Records, Baptisms
1876-1883 in Guadalajara:

Jose Hermenegildo born on April 13, 1883, baptized on April 18, 1883;
legitimate son of Magdaleno Cortes and Jesus Robles; paternal grandparents:
Antonio Cortes and Caciana Padilla; maternal grandparents: Emigdio Robles
and Manuela Rivera.

This is several years later than the previous child's baptism. This
particular film is of the baptisms for the legitimate children in the
parish. I was wondering if perhaps my great-grandmother's baptism was not
in this, because she was not a legitimate child. I don't know if she was or
not, but I am wondering where the records are for the illegitimate
children? Did they get baptized?

This is terrible. I was raised Catholic and cannot remember so many details
of the church and being a Catholic. My mother-in-law says, "Once a
Catholic, always a Catholic."

Hello Corrine! I have worked with Guadalajara records and have found sometimes hard.
If your grandmother was ilegitimate youd have to use these films for the JEsus PArish,
natural means ilegitimate children. There are two Jesus Parishes, the northern and southern one.

Some of the films overlap but its worth looking at both list for the years your looking for.

Keep in mind that there about a total of about 8 churches or parishes in Guadalajara at the time here is a list of the parishes. These are the parishes for your time period.
There are other but were found in the 1900's. PArt of my family is from Guadalajara.

Thanks! This is great! I have been a bit frustrated with just trying to understand the layout and recordkeeping, both civil and parish, in Guadalajara. This helps a lot.

When you state that you understand that a member has the film for this time and place...

- If a member has a film and is willing to do lookups for other members, they will put their name next to the film information in the Films database, which you can access by clicking "FILMS" from the top menu of the Nuestros Ranchos site.

- If you are certain that your family line is from the city of Aguascalientes, it is probably worthwhile to order the relevant films for the time period, as you will probably want to take scans or printouts of the relevant documents yourself.

- Can you tell us the film number that you are looking for? If you do not know it, please go to http://www.familysearch.org and click on "Library" and then "Family History Library Catalog"

Another good place to start is with Mexican border crossing records. The index is available through Ancestry.com and you can access the images at many libraries that have institutional subscriptions to the service. The border crossing records will list the person's place of birth and their parents' names.

Social Security records also list the same information:

Linda,

I don't know much about the Romero family. I do know that Maria Norberta had fifteen children and that her parents were: Ygnacio Romero and Ygnacia de Aro. I do have the names of her children. If you would like that information let me know. Sorry I cannot be of more help.

Do you have any more information on Maria Norberta Romero? My Romero
family lived in Tepatitlan for at least 4 generations. They are
Serapio Romero, b. abt. 1820 who married Petra Pena. Their son, Jose
In turn,
Manuel and Marcelina's son, Castulo Romero, b. abt 1880, married
Sofia de la Torre. Their son, Jose Ramon Romero was my father. All
the Romero's were born in Tepatitlan.
