The Indigenous custom of using flowers sounds very beautiful. The lazo

Thanks Josie for all the legwork to help get us there.

I stayed at the Howard Johnson Express during my one and only visit. The rooms are very comfortable and it is within walking distance. I would like to stay there again if I go and would like to know if anyone else is staying there? I would rather not share a room with anyone and this is affordable for me. Only problem is walking home alone late in the evening. It is not the best of neighborhoods at night, typical downtown with vagrants etc. If there is someone to walk back with I will make my plans to come to the conference and stay a couple of days to do some research and meet and socialize with my fellow Ranchos members.

Hi Alicia!

I will keep you posted when I hear from others as to where everyone is
staying.

On another subject, In April 2006 you responded to John on the subject of
viewers at the FHCs. You mentioned that you have learned to take photos of
the documents at the viewers using a mat board and that you needed to use a
tripod to steady the photo. How did that turn out? I tried this today at
the FHC but I must be doing something wrong because it did not work.......I
used a mini-tripod. Please let me know if you have had success doing this.

Thanks a lot! I will be in touch soon about the hotel rooms.

Josie I'm butting in here.

I'm not sure what happened in your situation but I'm guessing that a
couple of things were possible:

1) did you have your "macro" set on your camera. . .that is the setting
that allows you to take pictures close up (check your manual).

2) did you have the camera set for "no flash" (check manual)

3) I have to use my mini tripod only with two of the three legs
extended. So there is still a bit of holding it steady but the
differenece in quality from holding it in the open with just my hands is
100% I was getting so many blurry photos before and now they are a rarity.

4) you might need to make the image a little smaller on the reader as
sometimes the image is way too big for being that close.

just some thoughts,

joseph

I have just booked my plane ticket to go to the conference. Unfortunately due to work schedule and some other trips that I have to make around the same time, I will not be able to be in Salt Lake very long. I fly in on Thursday evening and fly back out on Sunday afternoon. So basically, I plan on attending some of the sessions and getting a few hours of film viewing... probably Zacatecas informaciones matrimoniales from the mid-1600s.

Who else is confirmed thus far and where is everybody staying? If there is a critical mass of Ranchos people in one hotel or another I will go there.

The schedules for the conference itself and the daylong session done by George Ryskamp the day before the conference are available on the website in Spanish and English in easy-to-read formatted PDFs.

Arturo,

According to the IGI-

JN. DE ESCOBEDO
Marriages:
Spouse: TERESA DE ULLOA Family
Marriage: 06 JAN 1669 Nuestra Senora De Los Dolores, Teocaltiche, Jalisco, Mexico
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Source Information:
Batch No.: Dates: Source Call No.: Type: Printout Call No.: Type:
M602486 1637 - 1669 0639754

In Nicolas de Anda Sanchez's new book he has listed Teresa as Teresa Ulloa Ruiz Esparza married Capt. Juan de Escobedo on 6 June 1669 in Teocaltiche.

In my book I'm working on, I have:

Ruiz de Esparza, Maria
The daughter of Lope Ruiz de Esparza and Francisca Gabay. She married Nicolas de Ulloa. Her parents were known residents of Aguascalientes from 1622 to 1652. She is mentioned in the requested marriage dispensation of her granddaughter, Elvira de Ulloa to Joseph de Torres on 1 January 1689 in Teocaltiche, Jalisco.

Arturo,

I am researching the Ruiz de Esparza but I have not reached back into this time period yet or into Aguascalientes. To date my Ruiz de Esparza are in Nochistlan and Jalpa Zacatecas and one in Rincon de Romos Aguascalientes. Yesterday I did find a new Ruiz de Esparza ancestor, Pablo Ruiz de Esparza soltero de 37 años se caso con Maria Cruz Ruiz de Esparza celive de 35 años, ambos de la Hacienda de Tlachichila. Pablo Ruiz de Esparza es hijo de Jose Ynes Ruiz de Esparza y Maria Gertrudis Macias que viven. Maria Cruz Ruiz de Esparza, hija de Antonio Ruiz de Esparza finado y Maria San Juana Sigala que vive. Se casaraon en Nochistlan año de 1864.
I had to order film # 0226832, Informacion Matrimonial because the marriage films for this year did not record the names of the parents for the bride and the groom. Luckily I was able to find it yesterday in informacion matrimonial.

Jose Ynes Ruiz de Esparza is my GGG grandfather. He and Maria Gertrudis Macias, Valades married 30 May 1810 in Nochistlan Zac and there my trail ends. I do not have birth dates or places for either of them. They were both still living in 1864 when their son Pablo Ruiz de Esparza married Maria Cruz Ruiz de Esparza. Pablo Ruiz de Esparza is the brother of my GG grandfather Mateo Ruiz de Esparza who in his marriage document to his first wife Florencia Gonzales, Ximenes (not my ancestress) on 08 Jan 1845 was said to have been from Tepezala, Jalpa Zacatecas. Mateo would have been born around 1825 in Jalpa but there are no birth records for Jalpa prior to 1884.

Arturo,

I have several ancestors listed this way, but when I inquired about what is on the films for these, I was told that the information is very limited, that the forms submitted are simple "group sheets" submitted by members or transcribed from other sources such as civil records, published genealogies, etc. for "Temple-Ready" purposes.

I did find one contact listed in an Ancestral File, but my letter to her was returned as undeliverable --"no forwarding address".

I'd be interested too to see if anyone has had any success in viewing these films.

Can't say I've had success but I did find the specific information on
some relatives and sent the person a post card that they never replied
to. [note: I'm pretty sure all you will find is a submitted family group

same info in the Ancestral Files and Petigree Resource files before
ordering the film. I think sometimes you can find the same information
online for the contact info.

Hola,

Saludos,

Alfonso González

Salt Lake City. I went to the www.lds.org website but did NOT find anything
relating
to "Tesoros de Las Americas" as stated in the message. I will check on
Monday with Ms. Jepson about this. I have also checked with the Best
Western Plaza Inn (1-801-521-0130) and they have 4 rooms left at $82.00 each
for 1 to 4 persons per room. Howard Johnson has rooms available for $39.32
($35.00 plus $4.92 tax). Mention "Ranchos Genealogy Group" or ask for
"Mira" when making reservations at Howard Johnson. Their telephone is
1-800-541-7639.

The attachments are in Spanish but I know you can read them! :-) Please
feel free to contact me if you have questions. If you are interested in
attending please send me an e-mail so I may keep up with who is going. I
hope to hear from a lot of you!

Josie,

Ruth Schirmacher forwarded your email to me. I have attached our schedule
for the October 13-14 Hispanic Conference. We believe there will not be
any significant changes. As you may be aware, the Church is sponsoring a
"Tesoros de Las Americas" festival the following weekend and you may find
information on that event at www.lds.org under Calendar or Temple Square
Events. If you are planning a trip, you may want to arrange to stay for
that special evening.

We are very excited to have you participate in our conference. As you are
aware, it is free. We look forward to your group joining us.

Hi Emilie!

Here is what Karen Jepson sent me last night regarding the "Tesoros" event:

<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I will be in Salt Lake City from Sunday, October 8th until Sunday, October
15th so I will be unable to attend the "Tesoros" event but it certainly
sounds very nice.

Josie,

The "Tesoros" Festival is listed in the calendar for October simply as
"Hispanic Cultural Event--Conference Center---Time to be determined---".
Also, I didn't see the schedule that you said you attached to your message.

Thanks, Joseph, for reminding me about sending attachments.....I completely
forgot! Before I read this message telling me how to do it, I had already
tried cutting and pasting the schedules, separately, into a Word document
and that is what I sent out to the group in two different postings......did
I do this right? Honestly, I am not very "computer savy" but I do the best
I can......that is why I get into the messes I get into! :-)

Thanks for the help!

Thank you Jose,
I don't why I didn't think that the reference to "Malpaso," was a "place
name," I kept thinking it had something to do with the condition of the
film. Gosh, do I have alot to learn about Mexico. Many thanks for your
input.

where current archeological digs are occurring (La Quemada) is near
Villanueva.

In double checking this entry out, I believe it's posted to the incorrect
film file on ranchos.
Has anyone viewed this film?
SLC LDS has it listed under Santa Maria Mecatabasco, Villa Del Refugio,
Zacatecas, Mexico and not Villanueva.
I will order it and hopefully it will be the correct film so that I can
continue this Corvera Gonzalez line.

Arturo,
Listed in the Villanueva film file ...
Baptism (Malpaso) 1861 - 1869 Film 1094628 Batch C605391.
The IGI for this Film number is noted as being Santa Maria Mecatabasco,
Villa Del Refugio, Zacatecas, Mexico and not Malpaso/Villanueva..

Thank you,

The latest info I have on General Trinidad Rodriguez

Mr. Alderete,

I came across your fascinating genealogy website while doing some research on your ancestor, Trinidad Rodriguez. I am very interested in sources for additional information about him and especially for any photographs which might exist, for use in a museum exhibit.

Research Reminder

Just a reminder that when conducting genealogy research once the resource Familysearch.org has been exhausted it's time to order films in the area where one believes the families are from.

MAP OF RANCHOS EN JALISCO

I am desperately searching a RANCHO en JALISCO on a map that would actually show on the map. But I have unsuccessfully looking for on the internet. The rancho is called "EL PAPELOTE" I heard it is just north of San Julian. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I can obtain this information. This would be very much appreciated.

Since the custom was to marry twice, once civil and once by the church could that make a difference in the status of the children when baptized? Could a civil marriage that might have preceded a church marriage not be seen as making the child ligetimate? There was such a long procedure to marry in the church with dispensations if there was a blood relationship that I can see marrying years apart in the church and civil.. plus I would think the church marriage is the one that would be considered more important. I noticed in the 1930 census for Jerez the record asks if they were married in both.. many people were not much to my surprise.
I'm using babel fish to translate this and to learn Spanish..

Linda in B.C.

hijo natural = mama y papa presentes no casados
hijo ligitimo = mama y papa casados legalmente

Don't worry about your spanish. About the case you're telling me "h.n. de

personally do not think the last name of his father was the same as his
mother's. Probably the father did not want to recognize the son and left he
and her mother. About "h. lego", could refer to his mother, born as a
legitimate child of his granparents.

What do you think?

...." means "hijo natural" meaning his parents were not married. I
personally do not think the last name of his father was the same as his
mother's. Probably the father did not want to recognize the son and left
he
and her mother. About "h. lego", could refer to his mother, born as a
legitimate child of his granparents.

What do you think?

Kind regards

Erik

Erik,

Erik,

Yes, I quoted the birth record for Ysac in the original message in English below. I was wondering why Ysac said his father's name was Encarnacion Cervantes iinstead of Talamantes in the birth records for his own children.

Emilie

---Original Message---

---the Cervantes name came from Ysac's mother Dorotea Cervantes who did not marry Encarnacion Talamantes until after Ysac's birth and that of his two brothers. Encarnacion and Dorotea were not married until July 10, 1839, three years after the birth of Ysac and six years after the birth of Ysac's brother Sotero. The Talamantes I believe were part Indian from Tlaltenango, and the Cerbantes' were espanoles from Encarnacion de Diaz.

I found Ysac's birth record for June 4, 1836 in "Hijos Legitimos" for La Encarnacion Church, Encarnacion de Diaz, Jalisco. In the margin the record reads: "h. lego.", yet in the body of the record it reads "bautise solamente---Jose Ysac de dos dias nacido en esta Villa h. n. de Dorotea Cerbantes. A. M. Anto. Cerbantes y Juliana Rovalcaba----. The record for Sotero reads the same, "h. lego." in the margin, and "h. n." in the body of the record for April 24, 1833. No father or paternal grandparents are listed in either record. ----

Dear Emilie:

That's a difficult question that might have his origin in personal issues.
It seems intentional because you say that repeats in the birth records of
his own children. An option would be to look in the records in the region
some years before he was born for this "Encarnación Cervantes". We could
receive a surprise by discovering that he was his real father.

Here's yet another example of acceptable unions in small towns, although not
recognized by church or civilly until actually married:

My mother-in-law "fue robada", which was often done in the olden days were
dating was not permitted. The two fell in love, and made a pact whereby she
would literally be swept away (on a horse) and taken to the hills for a
weekend. Upon returning, everyone knew that this was now a union, and she went to
stay at her mother-in-law's house where within a time when all the "hoopla"
of the event subsided, they made plans to marry quietly through the church and
civilly. She has never told me if this occurred before or after my husband
was born. Obviously, this was a widely accepted way of getting together with
two families who would not have normally blessed the marriage (my mother in
law came from an extremely poor family while my father in law came from a
wealthier family). To this day, neither sides of the family really intermingle
- and this is a very small town!

I am therefore thinking that hijo natural could have been from such a union
while subsequent siblings were hijos legitimos. So far as the law is
concerned, only the legitimate children of such a union could inherit property.

Esperanza you reminded me of my paternal grandparents marriage story in Jerez Zacatecas in 1914. My 20 year old grandfather Epitacio Castanon was away from home with his donkey caravan selling booze when he was robbed by bandits. They were going to take his mules and he told them if they did he'd be out of business with no more booze to sell in their territory so they let him keep his donkeys. When he got home to El Durazno he found his friend had stolen his girlfriend and married her. So my grandfather stole his friends jilted girlfriend Juana Sanchez. She was still 14 so he left her at the priests house for 3 days until she turned 15 then he married her in a civil ceremony and then later in a church ceremony.. She said he stole her from her home so she had to marry him. They remained married until his death in 1965. Your story is the first other 'stolen' bride story I had heard. Thank you for sharing the memory.

Linda,
I actually did an ethnology on both of my in-laws many years ago. My
father-in-law insists that this arrangement was a "pact". She would go to the
church to clean with her two other friends, and she would wear a red dress. His
friend, who actually did the sweeping would be able to identify her this way.
However, her version is different: she states she was unaware. I suspect
she says this to protect her status in front of her adult children. I tend to
believe my father-in-law.

Someone mentioned that they doubted children born out of wedlock or even
conceived out of wedlock was not important as it was before - this is not true
with some families, even today! My surrogate family (from Los Altos, Jalisco
and La Barca, Jalisco) actually disowned their 15 year old daughter when she
had to marry because of pregnancy (she is now 38 years old and still happily
married).Today, this young lady who married (my niece) enjoys a relationship
with her family, but they do not accept her husband - despite the fact that
they have been married close to 25 years!

Her younger male siblings followed the old tradition: their parents had to
go to the female parents house and formally ask for the bride's hand in
marriage on behalf of their sons. With the assent of the bride's father, the
marriage was considered blessed, and was planned thereafter.

Now you've taken me to my maternal side of the family. My gr-grandmother was date raped at age 18 and became pregnant with my grandmother, that was 1901 in Tamazula Jalisco. Her father put her out of the house because she had sullied the family name. He worked with her attacker and never blamed him. She moved into an abandoned house the equivilante of 3 blocks from her father and her brothers would bring her her 'dario' or daily ration until after the birth of my grandmother. She continued to live there alone with my grandmother for 3 years gleaning corn from the fields and making taquitos to sell along the roadside to people going to Colima. After 3 years her father arranged a marriage to an older man he worked with and he moved into her home with her and my grandmother. She did not get a vote on whether she wanted to marry him or not, after the marriage her father welcomed her back into his home.. Life was hard and the standards of the day didn't make things any
easier for a woman. I have nothing but respect for the fortitude our forbears showed, they were survivors.
Just a side note, this rapist did it to another girl a bit later and her brothers stabbed him to death! Honor was handled in many different ways... Genetics makes him my gr-grandfather but I have been unable to find anything on him at all. My grandmother always said he was a sailer from Spain... that' the story anyway...

There is a difference in "stolen brides" situations!

there are brides that are stolen, so they are called "robadas", which mean the bride was not required in love but raped; against the will,
and there are brides that are called "juidas" with the letter "j" sounding gutural like in Jimenez, this brides make an appointment to be swept away by the romeo.
Next step is to be married, frecuently when child is on the way, some "juidos" or "huidos" present their respects to the old ones and ask for pardon.
My father asked for my sister-in-law´s hand to her father for my older brother, that family were living in Veracruz deep in the jungle at tha time;
Don Andres, the father was very "catholic" so he set the condition that a priest has to ask for such hand. My father told my brother "do what you have to do, you are on your own, I have no time nor money for a priest transportation", so my brother and his bride make an appointment, she jumped trough the wooden window on a horse and with my brother she became a "juida".
After "honeymoon" they got married and when she was very pregnant they went together into the jungle and ask her parents for pardon.
It is a say in the family when somebody refers she was stolen, other one clarifies "no, she went on her will".

WOW. My Great Grandmother Antonia Santa Maria, was supposedly stolen
away on horseback by my Great Grandfather, Francisco Diaz in the
