I found these old coins while on vacation in Teocaltiche and Jalostotitlán, Jalisco last year. I think this is one important subject that we have not talked about in the forum, MONEY! The coins are located in the John Gonzalez file.
Nice coins, John.
Those interested in numismatics will find the link below very interesting and helpful to identify some of your old Mexican coins.

John,
How did you find the coins? Did you buy them or excavate them? Was the square coin part of the common currency or was it manufactured by and for the use of one individual or by the state of Zacatecas. Did you get any historical background regarding these coins? Very interesting photos and new topic for discussion.

I moved the coins to the Albums area of the the New site. Look in the
folder called "John Gonzalez". . .John I hope you don't mind but I added
some pictures of my own. John's pictures are the two that are 4 coins in
a row. My pictures are of a 1793 1/2 Real coin that I bought because my
GGG grandfathers were born in 1793 and my GGGG grandparents: Justo
Puente and Josefa Sanchez were married in that Year as well in
Sombrerete, Zacatecas. I only own the 1793 coin. the 1780 and 1798 are
shown only so you can get an idea of what the coin looked like new. Of
course the 1780 was different in that it showed a different King and the
1798 was different as well, but they give you an idea.

It is a great site packed with information. the list owner: Benicio Samuel Sanchez Garcia is a new member of
Ranchos.
Señor Sanchez Garcia,
cuando tienes oportunidad puedes darnos una introduccion de su grupo: www.genealogia.org.mx
I have now added the film database to the new Nuestros Ranchos website.
The functionality is still in the works. Users cannot yet add films to the database themselves, but that functionality is on its way... I will try to get to it this weekend.
I have set up the functionality for people to add films to the database. Remember, we are including films that either: (1) You have on indefinite loan at your local FHC; or (2) for which you have confirmed a batch number in IGI or VRI. In order to add such a film:
1. Click on the "Films" menu item at the top of the page.
2. Click on the state corresponding to the location of the film you want to add (at this point you can only add films for municipalities in Jalisco, Zacatecas and Aguascalientes).
3. If there are already films for the municipality, click on the name of the municipality. You will be taken to a list of films for the municipality. Make sure that the film is not yet in the database. If it is not, click on "Add Film" at the bottom of the page.
4. If there are no films for the municipality, select it from the drop-down menu at the bottom of the page for the state and click on "Add Film"
5. Fill in the information making sure to follow the format for the films already in the database. If you have confirmed that the film is indexed in VRI or IGI, click on the corresponding checkbox and enter a batch number.
Arturo,
This is a great addition to the new Nuestros Ranchos site!
I don't mean to be ungrateful to yahoo or anything but for me there's no comparison with the things you can do on your own. A thing I particularly like is getting rid of so many ads and the promotion trailers posted at the end of every yahoo email.
My sincere congratulations.
Victor

Arturo this is great. We need to establish this as something we will
accept volunteers to do RIGHT AFTER we fully make the transition.
General message to ALL:
There are over 50% of you that haven't retrieved your passwords from the
http://nuestrosranchos.org site. That means that in 8 days you'll be on
the outside looking in. We need to get with this transition and get
moved over to the new site. So if you are wanting to use the great
features like this batch number database you will need to get moved over
to the new site. If you are totally lost on how to do this email me
PRIVATELY at makas@nc.rr.com and I'll help you or go to
http://nuestrosranchos.org/node/13819 for very easy to follow and
detailed instructions.
Arturo when there is time can you add these instructions to the Film
area so people can quickly get up to speed on adding their films. I see
the possibility that we can have all the batch numbers available for
Jalisco, Zacatecas, and Aguascalientes uploaded in the database. . .what
a great research tool that would be. Thanks Arturo

Arturo,
Here are the batch numbers for the films you have for Nochistlan de Mejia sent in by Deena Ortiz.
226726, 1736-1762, M606257
226727, 1762-1779, M606258
226728, 1776-1807, M606259
226729, 1907-1824, M606268
226730, 1824-1841, M606261
226731, 1841-1855, M606262
226732, 1856-1866, M606263
226733, 1867-1874, M606264
226734, 1874-1880, M606265
Thanks for all your hard work, the site is fantastic.
Alicia
Thank you Alicia for those batch numbers on the films.
If anybody else has a list of batch numbers that you have confirmed are functional either in IGI or VRI, please let me know and I will upload them. Soon you will be able to go in and put in the information into the database yourself.
Also, if you have films at your local Family History Center and would not mind doing an occasional lookup for another member, please let me know so that we can add those films to the database as well, even if they are not indexed in IGI or VRI...
In other words, the film database will serve two purposes:
1. Allow members to do batch searches easily by simply finding the relevant film and clicking to search
2. Allow members to know if anybody in the group has a film on loan at their local FHC that might spare them having to order the film him/herself.

On the 31 March 2006 the Ranchos Yahoo group will cease to function as a
group.
At this point we have roughly 40%-50% of the group members moved over
(this is not good news).
So after that date any messages you post to the email address
Joseph,
What is the current policy about registering new members?. I know of a
person who was rejected when trying to register in the new site. No sense
in registering at Yahoo now either.

Recently there's been some discussion about Nueva Galicia and whether the group should admit topics other than those related to Jal., Zac. & Ags. (which I think we already do anyway) so I thought this was interesting because it shows some illustrations of what originally was considered Nueva Galicia.

what does the phrase "Abuelos seigneron fueron padrinos ..." mean in a baptism document. Are they both abuelos and padrinos? I would have attached the document, but I don't see a way of doing that. With the email system it was easy to do. Well, that's progress.
Since I can't see the actual handwriting I would guess that the phrase could be "...abuelos se ignoran.." If you think the writing could be the phrase I wrote, the meaning is "...grandparents unknown..."
Enter your vote today! A new poll has been created for the
ranchos group:
Nueva Galicia: Would Opening the Membership up to All of
Nueva Galicia adversly affect your membership in the Ranchos
I just went to the old Ranchos site at Yahoo to cast my vote.
Would it affect my membership if the areas of interest for the group expanded to include the neighboring states of Jalisco, Zacatecas and Aguascalientes? Not at all!
The voting results show divided opinions. Although I respect whatever reasons others may have to think that it affects them, I must admit that I just can't grasp those reasons.
Victor
p.s. FYI, I have already updated my mail account in all the mailing lists that I subscribe to in nuestrosranchos.org. And I'm thinking about canceling my yahoo email account in the near future.
Our groups basically covers what was Nueva Galicia. As I understand it, most of the northern territories were only part of Nueva Galicia for a short period of time before they got broken out into Nueva Vizcaya, Nuevo Mexico, etc.
What was left of Nueva Galicia was basically the state of Jalisco, from which Zacatecas was broken out. Then Aguascalientes was split out of Zacatecas and Nayarit was split out of Jalisco.
So basically, other than Nayarit, we cover Nueva Galicia now.
When you say "all of Nueva Galicia" what exactly do you mean?

Well I'm not really comfortable in establishing the boundaries of the
Nueva Galicia area. I thought there was some discussion awhile back
about significant parts of the Historical Nueva Galicia being left out
of our research area.
Are we only talking about Nayarit, well if so then consider the poll to
mean expanding to the Nayarit area as well. Weren't there other pockets
or partial parts of estados that aren't included?
Like I said I'm out of my area of confident knowledge.

I just went to the old Ranchos site at Yahoo to cast my vote.
Would it affect my membership if the areas of interest for the group expanded to include the neighboring states of Jalisco, Zacatecas and Aguascalientes? Not at all!
The voting results show divided opinions. Although I respect whatever reasons others may have to think that it affects them, I must admit that I just can't grasp those reasons.

p.s. FYI, I have already updated my mail account in all the mailing lists that I subscribe to in nuestrosranchos.org. And I'm thinking about canceling my yahoo email account in the near future.
Fabulous.
I was kind of hoping that as the members vote they would toss in their

I'm trying to get a feel for what you all think. I won't be making the
change soon but have been thinking about how you the group members feel
about it. Afterall Ranchos is not the joseph group it is about your the

I don't want to have to deal with a bunch of nonsensical messages if we
broaden the list. Does Nueva Galicia include Chihuahua, too? If so
then let's bring it on. If not, forget it!:) Marge:)

Yolanda, You make such a good point, while to date I do not have any relatives from the northern states I do enjoy reading history about all of Nueva Vizcaya, Nueva Galicia, and Nuevo Mexico. And you are correct that it is the largest states and with it is proximity to the border it affects most of us, so I vote with you to include some additional states provided that the new participants bring something useful to the entire group. For what it's worth I have put in my dos pesos..........Alicia

Yes, we should include the Nueva Vizcaya group since
many of our ancestors went north to start new
settlements and I have seen many common names among
the Nueva Vizcaya groups. Also, many of us have
common ancestors from the north, especially from
Chihuahua.

I guess you'll have to move me. I'm still on the road (Florida now)
and won't be returning to Wisconsin for another couple of weeks. I'm
in an RV and don't always get a good landline connection or wifi. I
I thought I had moved myself to the new list but my name isn't on the
list. Did I not complete the move, do it correctly, or was I sleep-

Josie has worked hard to get you information and it would be great if you gave
that trip a serious look if you are thinking you might go. I for one will not be
going as much as I would like to go.
If you think you might be going there is the matter of choosing a topic for
Professor George Ryskamp to speak on during that special session of the
seminar. If I was going I would love to hear a whole session on nothing more
than the Notario Records and how to get a little
better handle on how to research them.
So what do you all think?

The Hispanic
Conference in Salt Lake City will be held Saturday, October 14, 2006. I
am expecting to receive the program schedule soon and will post it
then. In the meantime, I have been informed that the Salt Lake Plaza
Best Western Hotel is now under new ownership. This has caused a price increase
in the hotel rate I had quoted in my previous e-mails. I contacted another
hotel and got good rates there as well. I am providing both for your
convenience.
1. Salt
Lake Plaza Best Western Hotel changed their price to $82.00 plus tax for a
room for two persons. (Previously they had quoted $80.00 plus tax for a
room for up to 4 persons.) Their website is: www.plaza-hotel.com and their
toll free number is: 1-800-366-3684. You have to mention "Ranchos
Genealogy Group" to get the discounted price since there are a few rooms
reserved for us. There is NO continental breakfast but they have a nice
restaurant that serves a buffet as well as good menu selections. Since
October is a very busy time for them I was only able to hold a small block of
rooms from October 8th through October 15th. You can choose to
stay ANY number of days between Oct 8th - 15th.
2.
Howard Johnson Express Inn offered us a rate of $35.00 plus tax (total $39.32)
for a single queen bed room and a rate of $49.00 plus tax (total $55.05) for a
room with two double beds for 1 to 4 persons. Go to "Google" and type in
"Howard Johnson Express Salt Lake City" to see their facility as well as
comments made by other guests who have stayed there. Their toll free
number is: 1-800-541-7639. Mention my name (Josie Trevino-Trevino)
and "Ranchos Genealogy Group" for the special rate. They offer a FREE
continental breakfast and they are about two blocks from the Library.
There is a free trolley that passes nearby and takes you to the Library if you
do not want to walk. This hotel is able to provide rooms for us for any
number of days you might need......provided reservations are made EARLY.
Mickey and I have
stayed at both hotels in the past and like them equally well. The
convenience of the Best Western Plaza Inn is that it is located right next door
to the Library. Of course, you pay a little more for this
convenience. The convenience of the Howard Johnson Express Inn is that you
can have your FREE continental breakfast, (coffee, juice, bagels, cold cereal,
etc) in your room and then either walk to the library or ride the free
trolley.
Each person will be
responsible for making their own reservations, travel arrangements,
etc
Please let me
know if you are interested in going, the number of persons attending, the
dates you will attend, etc. Mickey and I are planning to arrive there
Sunday, Oct 8th and leave the following Sunday, Oct. 15th. The Library is
closed on Sundays so we use this as our travel day. :-)
I am still
working on finding a little space (somewhere) that we can sit down and visit
with each other and exchange information. Any
suggestions are welcome!
Wouldn't it be great if we could grill some fajitas con
cebolla, aguacate y tortillas and eat our tacos as we talk about our
ancestors???

My friend, Ruth
Gomez Schirmacher from the FHC in Salt Lake City sent me the following
e-mail:
"Right now, we are looking at having some
advanced classes on Oct 13th and our regular conference for the local people and
anyone else on Sat. Oct. 14th. George would be giving the classes Friday.
So I would imagine that your group would want to be here for the advanced
classes that will not be given on SAt. It will be nice to have this extra day of
classes. If your group has a topic which they want George to teach you can
suggest it. Also remember that as we get closer to the conference we will need
to know what films you need so we will have them at the library. Just inform
your group of the dates and have them block them out and we will have more
information as time goes by. It will be good to see you guys again."
The classes she refers
to for Friday, October 13th will be given by George Ryskamp. This
is a wonderful opportunity to learn from the best!
Please let me know if there are any specific topics you
would like addressed so I can let them know. You can also be deciding on
which film you will be using there so it can be ordered prior to your
arrival.
Thanks!

Antonio

Hi Jonathan!
Legado Latino is planning the conference in October.
I spoke with Sherry Bush in Karen Jepson's office and Sherry provided me with
the details. Mickey and I hope to see you then!!!

Below is part of a
message I received today from Rich and Kitty Cortez regarding our trip to the
Hispanic Conference in SLC in October. It is very nice of them to offer to
help with the film orders because sometimes the film you need is not there and
needs to be ordered from the vault. This can take a day or so and reduces
our research time.......
Please let me know if
there are any other concerns that we can help you with. I am soooooo
excited about this trip to SLC!!!

<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>
Josie:
If you can find out from those that are
going to SLC in October, what areas
in Mexico that they are researching, then we can check out their film in April
to see if they are already there. We have found that the family search.org site
is not updated enough. There are some films we ordered 2 years ago and looked at
and they are still listed as VAULT which means someone would be ordering that
film instead of another one that they need.

calling a month or two ahead of time so the films will be there for sure.
Always tell them you are from out of state. It puts you higher up on the list. I order 5

films for us. So gather the

The first thing we do when we arrive at SLC is make
sure ALL films we ordered are in. If they can't be found in the regular location

is done early enough, they could be in by
2:30 that afternoon.
Or if the film you order is not clear, faded, not the
right one, then get to the window as soon as possible to order a better copy or
the correct one.
I am definitely going to try to make it. I think it will be a wonderful experience and a chance to meet some Ranchos members.
Joseph, I think that is a great idea for George Ryskamp to talk about notario records. I for one have only ever seen a few in Guadalajara but I understand that these were kept in many places, i.e. their collection was not centralized. I know that there are many notarial records in Zacatecas for people who lived in the region where I am concentratin (Colotlan, Totatiche, Tlaltenango).
Estaban Valdes Salazar was also telling me that they are now in the process of organizing and cataloguing all of the municipal archives in Tlaltenango and he believes there are some notarial records there as well.
That would be a great start... how does one find out who the relevant notary would have been and where he would have archived copies of the documents he created?

It is going to be a wonderful trip. Josie and I get lost

Ryschamp will speak on whatever subject people want....
Josie and I are both looking forward to meeting as many
Rancheros as we can!!!

I am tentatively planning on attending in October but not sure. We will be going to Zacatecas at the end of September for Las Fiestas Patronales of Tlachichila and hope to be back by then. My sister and I are planning a trip to Salt Lake in May and we are preparing for our trip in accordance to Rich and Kitty Cortez' lesson. I don't believe anyone presented the minutes of the March 4 Northern California meeting in Sacramento. Kitty gave a presentation on how to plan and prepare for a trip to the Salt Lake City library. I am so excited that I know I squeak every time I think about it. We are generating an Excel database that can track all the documents we need to find by family group, film number and dates, whether marriage, baptism or other, this after having identified in our database if it's a document found on the IGI or by some other method. We are lucky to have Rich and Kitty in this group. They are two
truly remarkable and talented people. They are very caring and giving people who not only bring their gifts and talents but their kindness and humanity to all those who come into contact with them. Thanks Rich and Kitty!!!

the group to help them prepare for SLC in October 2006? The first time I
went I bought the book "Going to Salt Lake City to do Family Research" by J.
Carlyle Parker and it helped me tremendously. ( I am not suggesting
everyone buy a book ) It helps a lot to be PREPARED in advance and it
saves a lot of time and frustration, doesn't it? :-)
<<<<<>>>>>>
This sounds like a great time-saver!!! It is
exactly what I need!!! Can you share with us?
<<<<<<<We are
lucky to have Rich and Kitty in this group. They are two truly remarkable and
talented people. They are very caring and giving people who not only bring their
gifts and talents but their kindness and humanity to all those who come into
contact with them. >>>>>>>
I
agree we are extremely lucky to have Rich and Kitty and so many other members of
Nuestros Ranchos that are in this category! That is the beauty of
genealogy! We are all one big family!
Thanks
to all of you for sharing all your knowledge, tips, facts, etc. with all of
us.......it is truly appreciated!
Lots
of hugs from San Antonio,
Josie
I am tentatively planning on attending in October but not sure. We will be
going to Zacatecas at the end of September for Las Fiestas Patronales of
Tlachichila and hope to be back by then.
My sister and I are planning a trip to Salt Lake in May and we are
preparing for our trip in accordance to Rich and Kitty Cortez' lesson. I don't
believe anyone presented the minutes of the March 4 Northern California meeting
in Sacramento.
I am so excited that I
know I squeak every time I think about it. We are generating an Excel database
that can track all the documents we need to find by family group, film number
and dates, whether marriage, baptism or other, this after having identified in
our database if it's a document found on the IGI or by some other method.
We are lucky to have Rich and Kitty in this group. They are two truly
remarkable and talented people. They are very caring and giving people who not
only bring their gifts and talents but their kindness and humanity to all those
who come into contact with them.
Thanks Rich and Kitty!!!

The following ranchos poll is now closed. Here are the
final results:
POLL QUESTION: From time to time people not from our geographical area express intereste in Ranchos. Here is my answer:
Can you define "high quality"?
Esperanza
Sorry Twice:
1) I'm not saying the regular members of the group are not "high
quality", but what I meant was people who have taken that step beyond
"our" day in and day out level of research and dedicated themselves to
more advanced levels of research.
2) This is more the point. I was doing the new poll about the extention
of the group to include all of Nueva Galicia and somehow someway I must
have accidently closed that old poll from long ago back in Nov of 2005.
I never meant for those results to get distributed to the group "at
this time." Those poll results are available to all including past
polls in the "polls" area of the yahoo group. Sorry they got
distributed and clouded the issue of the new poll.

ps: 12 days before the Yahoo Group gets closed. Are You Ready?

I just watched an old move about Pizzaro and Adawalpa that seems to
roughly follow historical accounts:
"The Royal Hunt of the Sun"
old but okay,

Hi Group, just sharing some info on an HBO special if

I know this is very late notice -- unless someone already posted the

There will be a Hispanic Family History Seminar at the 5900 Grand Avenue,
Riverside, on Saturday, March 18, 2006.
Thank you Deena;
I just turned on the computer and saw the entry you had. You are very sweet. I sometimes miss things because I am not on or miss the information by going too fast through the entries. It is 2: pm and I couldn't have made it now.
I was very pleased to meet you at the Ranchos meeting, Sister Ortiz

I belong to many different forums and groups for many different names
and areas. If I could find a group which specialized in Jalisco,
Guadalahara, Tepatitlan de Morelos I would be happy. I'm selfish.

I have now added the film database to the new Nuestros Ranchos website.
The functionality is still in the works. Users cannot yet add films to the database themselves, but that functionality is on its way... I will try to get to it this weekend.
Alicia Avelar Olmos de Carrillo
Arturo,
Here are the batch numbers for the films you have for Nochistlan de Mejia sent in by Deena Ortiz.
2. Allow members to know if anybody in the group has a film on loan at their local FHC that might spare them having to order the film him/herself.
thanks Arturo,
great feature:

I see it is 3 am... I have not yet gone to sleep since I do not work
tomorrow and usually stay up late.
What are you doing up so early/late? Did you just wake up?
Joseph and Arturo, Who can add films to the films list. I have almost one drawer full of films at my local family history center to add to Nochistlan Zacatecas. Should I sumit the film #, film description, batch # and the applicable year(s) to you so that you can enter it into the database? Or can I do it myself? I know this sounds like a dumb question from a low tech dummy but hey what can I say, I grew up before the age of computers and only began to use them about 15 years ago on a limited basis and within the last 12 years or so it has become a must have household item. Signed, Dummy in Northern California

What do you think of the film functionality and the tweaking with the
text colors that I did?
======================
wow how did you do this? this is a great tool. If we can get the other
films tied into this that would be great, then again it must be a
tremendous amount of work.
This is a fabulous feature. Everyone should have a look at the "films"
database at the top of the Nuestros Ranchos website.
Thanks Arturo, you are making the group much much better than what it
was before. Thanks for all your effort on our behalf.

ps: the colors are hmmm, okay, with one tiny exception that wouldn't
matter if it never gets changed. the color difference here is so small

Yes, the first two documents are at the Library of Congress. I have had a chance to look at them and have been able to build some pretty complex genealogies from the information in those volumes for a groups of families (Escobedos and Covarrubias) going back to the 1400s. They actually have a great deal of indigenous names in them as well...
Hello Folks!
PSSSSSS - Where and when can we get the 3rd
volume???
I have the first two volumes - purchased in Texas at our state
conference.
Mickey
hmmm, is that right!
I wonder what these volumes have to say about the Diaz/Dias and
Castañeda's? I would say how about the Rodriguez, but that is in volume
3 I would think.
How much did these books cost? How many pages are given on a typical
entry for some of the names?
thanks for volunteering to do lookups? Or am I getting you mixed up
with the other volunteer Olivia?
thanks,
joseph
