Films in Database

I have uploaded David Serna's and Rosalinda Ruiz's films to the
database. Most of them do not have batch numbers but they are listed
so you know who has them at their local FHL. I will try to add batch
numbers to them and try to upload Joseph's and some others as I have
time.

Trip to Jalisco, Zacatecas

I will be spending about three weeks this December and January in
Jalisco and Zacatecas and am hoping to make it to the parrishes in
Colotlan and Tlaltenango, perhaps Atolinga as well as the archives in
Guadalajara...

Question... has anyone ever asked to see the actual books held at the
parrishes? I am thinking of asking to photograph some of them, but
don't know how well that would go over.

Any tips would be appreciated. I am also going to try to do an
interview with Esteban Valdes Salazar who has published some very good
genealogy and history books on Totatiche. He is the local "cronista"
and has obviously spent lots of time pouring over old archival
documents, including the transcription of the 1591 census of Tlaxcaltec
migrants to Colotlan and the entire 1770 Totatiche census (over 3000
names). So if there are any questions anyone would like to ask, please
let me know.

Films on permanent loan.

Peggy,

I understand your feelings. The nearest FHC for me usually opens only
on Saturdays and just for three hours. It has 2 projectors but only
one is in working order. On my last visit I was shown a letter where
they were asking for the films I haven't even reviewed to be sent
back. At this rate it'll take at least a couple of lives to find all
my ancestors. jah! Maybe I'll find myself in the next life!

I understand that for awhile there was an auxiliary San José parish
separated out of the main San José parish. It also seems that the
parochial jurisdictions changed over the years. I would like to be
able to decipher what belonged to what, and when, and how they
correlated with the civil jurisdictions.

Oh, my gosh, Connie,

I was in El Paso for 2 days as of the 11th and just left this morning! I went to visit my sisters, one of whom is recuperating in a hospital! Wow! How interesting it would have been to talk on the phone a wee bit. Marge:)

I get the database point. . .maybe

You guys are too quick for me! Yes, Joseph that is the point of the
database--to have a single source of all the info and not have to
have it repeated in several different files. Yes, a lookup means
getting a scanned image of a document for another member provided
they give you the film number, date and full names. I think that we
multiply the number of films we all have access to at one time by
helping one another out to further our research. I don't get to my
FHC often either, but if I can help anyone I would be happy to do so.

As Arturo points out, the database has the advantage of allowing you
to import and export into it.

You've been reminding us about how we're running out of space in the
files area, so I thought the database would help with that problem.
Or does the data we put into the databases add to the amount of space
alotted for files? Even if it does, I would imagine that doing away
with redundancy would help a little.

Thanks Arturo for your great

Jonathan's Film File-was-file uploaded to ranchos

Hello, Jonathan:  I am one of the newer members, not only in Ranchos but in the whole genealogy experience itself. I have been working steadily for about nine years and made a lot of "progress" but was striking out in all directions and actually don't even know if I was running into ancestors or not.  Then I ran into Ranchos and it put the whole thing into focus.  Now I am rather excited because by sending out copies of an unidentified photo, I actually have my first "hit". It is a living person, 93 years old, who is the granddaughter of the very man I was looking up.  I may really need some help later but in a couple of weeks I am flying to Mexico City to meet this person who is willing to receive me.  I will see what she can give me; I understand she is very alert.    I definitely will need help with the other grandfather who absolutely hides from  me:  The secret may be in Salt Lake City.   I have ordered
some of the films, waited a very long time to receive them only to realize I

Jonathan's Film File-was-file uploaded to ranchos

Sorry, for the confusion, that my uploading of my file has caused. I
created my file, with wordperfect (meaning, that I have never used
excel yet.) I just wanted to share with the group, what films and
other resources, that the FHC, here in Logan has. Because I only do
about 25% of my research, that the Logan Family History Center. The
other 75% of my research, is done at the Family History Library, in
Salt Lake. so, in reality, I have access, to all the films that the
Family History Library has, and it does not cost me anything, to order
them.

Thus saying that, I can say if, anyone needs a occasional lookup, they
can contact me, and see when I will be in Salt Lake. And can do the
Lookup.

Also, if there are other group members, here in Utah. That may be
able to help, with lookups at the FHL.

Lateral Research

Alicia:

I have been doing a lot of lateral research as well, particularly in
the earlier years (1700s) because as Emily points out, there is a lot
that can be found out by tracing migration and marrige patterns within
a family and across families.

I have a lot of intermarriage in my ancestry as well, with nine
different lineages leading back to the same man around 1700. Other
than this man having had many children, the families in this rancho
(Charco Hondo) seemed to marry with each other over the generations. I
am not sure that this has to do with fiefdom, because this particular
man was a rather large landowner and I am assuming his children were as
well, but by the late 1700s land had become scarce in the area and
marrying out would mean having to distribute land into even smaller
parcels in following generations.

I also think that family unity probably played a role... migrating
would usually require moving not just yourself, but your extended
family. That, I

Having said all this I do ask that you send me the materials also.

Lateral Research

"Another question to the group is how many
of you are doing lateral research. By lateral I mean across one time span say
in a 50 year range"

Alicia,

In answer to your question above from your
e-mail, I am one of those doing research such as you mention.

In researching, I use both methods; that of
going directly to the record in the film listed in the IGI, then I start looking
at the whole film to get a sense of where people actually lived, and not just
where they were baptized and married.  I used to think that if a
christening took place in a certain church in a certain town, that that is where
they lived and where they were born.

I am currently researching my father's
paternal side, since they have unusual names like Olague, Suriano, Quijas,
Tinajero, Flores and Felis (Felix).  The given first names were also
unusual.   (I cannot do much with his maternal side since his mother's
line consists of Garcias, Rodriquez and everyone was named Jose or Maria

If you have an Excel file that has all of the info, it should be
fairly easy to import it into the database. I pretty much did that
for the Totatiche and Colotlan films, which I had in an Excel file.
I will look at your file Joseph and let you know if there is anything
else that I would need to put your files into the database.

Unlucky 13

Okay with my move of the few genealogies to the Ranchos2 files area that
means that there are 13 of you that won't be able to access them because
you never responded to my encouragement to join Ranchos2.

if you 13 want to be partial membes okay with me but if you want full
membership go here:

and click on "Join This Group" and I"ll subscribe you. simple as that.

New Administrative Changes

I'm converting the Ranchos2 Files area to strictly members genealogies.
Its a work in progress but so far by MOVING the BATCHES to the LINKS
area of Ranchos1 we now are at 56% capacity rather than the 86% were
were at. That being said only to say that I'll be discontinuing putting
NEW MEMBER genealogies in the Yahoo Brief case and only use that
sometime in the distant future when we fill up the Ranchos2 file area
with new members (I might be dead by then and won't have to worry about
it).

I'm not sure when I'm going to be able to get around to moving the rest
of the stuff from Ranchos2 to its new home on my NuestraFamiliaUnida
website but I'll probably move a little at a time and then work on
getting the few genealogies in Briefcase over to the Ranchos2 files
area. Both Ranchos1 and Ranchos2 files area will be open to members for
adding, deleting, modifying, etc files as the members wish [note: I
meant your own that is].

if anyone has any questions or comments bring

I get the database point. . .maybe

I'm sorry Maria but I think I'm finally getting the point. The database
would be one database where we all have our films in one file so anyone
could then easily look at it rather than look at each individuals list
for the film they are hunting for.

Well Can't this be done by cutting and pasting from one Excel file to
the next?

I've updated my film list by putting up a very ugly Excel file in the
Ranchos2 files area.

thanks,

joseph

Jonathan's Film File-was-file uploaded to ranchos

If you are using Excel then why can't it be that we all create Excel
files and upload them once into the files area. It seems that asking you
to do double the work by re-entering them into the database in Ranchos
is punishment for a good deed. then again maybe I'm missing something.
Is there an advantage to this particular data base in the databases over
an excel file in the files area?

I think the only difference is that for some they won't do it unless
encouraged by Maria to participate in the one in the databases (me being
an example. . .yes I hear the message and will be working on my own
excel file sometime in the near future, but i'm so sorry to say that
truthfully I hardly get into the FHC anymore for my own personal
research and all I'll do is be a big tease by putting my films up giving
the impression I'll be able to do look ups. . .well I' might be able to
do a few, especially if Kitty or Rich or Jonathan were to ask for some).

Here is my definition of a look
