Dear Mr. Arnold Schwarzenegger

I want to thank you on behalf of all the Native American Indian
people not
only in California but also in the nation for reminding us that we
must
remain vigilant and united in our fight to protect our Tribal
sovereignty
and constitutional rights against those that do not respect them and
would
annihilate them.

Economics 101 - in California the individual taxpayers account for
over 90
percent of the State revenue. This is the reason the State and local
governments provide large tax incentive to companies to create
employment.
Employees of businesses produce goods and services that are sold to
consumers (other workers). When the company employees are paid they
pay
State income taxes and sales taxes when they buys goods and services.

You are absolutely correct in that the California Indian Tribes are
exempt
from paying State Income Taxes. However, the Tribes are not exempt
from
paying millions of dollars in

Gracias Steven,

I had seen Vecino so often that I was starting to wonder if most of my
family was Indios. I have nothing against being Indio and in fact am
very proud of my Indio heritage, but my only concern about being Indio
is that eventually the paper trail would end sooner than if they were
"Espanoles." Thus for the sake of continuing on the trail I was hoping
to stay within the Espanoles path. With this bit of information, for
which I am most grateful, I can relax a bit and continue to think that
at least into the 1750 my lines were Espanoles.

thanks again for this and for the Cruzitas information,

As far as I know vecino means "resident," as of a particular town.  My Nuevo Espasa Ilustrado Dictionary defines vecino as "adj, s. 1. Que habita con otros en un mismo pueblo, barrio o casa. 2. Cercano."  So there.  This so called "expert" was probaby confusing the fact that after an Indian was converted, he/she could no longer live out in the wild among other Indians.  He/she had to live at the mission, thus becoming a "vecino," a resident, of said mission, just like all the other residents or inhabitants of the mission like the Spaniards, mestizos, and slaves.

The little cross (+) used on the margins of archives or after someone's name simply means that the person has passed away.  It is common usage in Spanish writing to refer to Fulano de Tal (+), with the little cross after his/her name, to indicate that the person is dead.  I see it frequently when reading Spanish books or articles.

Basque?

it was late when I wrote to you last night. This morning I'm seeing that
maybe you mean Basque. Is that what you meant or was I originally right
that you mean Vasque or Vasquez?

if you meant Basque then I would think that yes there was a fair share
of Basque people that came to the new world as well but in Nevada there
is the University of Nevada that has a Basque studies department. You
could possibly find someone there to ask.

Vecinos y La Cruz

Hello Everyone,

I was listing to a NPR show about a week ago that was about the Missions
in and around San Antonio, Texas. Anyway one of the historical experts
in the discussion touched on the meaning of the word, "Vecino." He said
that was used for Indios that had successfully made the conversion over
to the Espanol lifestyle. . .Catholicism. At least that was my
understanding of what he said.

So what say you? I've seen the word "Vecino" in the marriage records
mostly in reference to the persons location. . ."Fue Vecino de este
pueblo de viente anos de edad."

Do you all agree with what I understood that expert said? And if so do
you all think the way I've seen the word Vecino used is to be understood
in the same way?

thanks,

Joseph

ps: Has anyone ever noticed that in some records [possibly only death
records] there is a T or "Cross" in the margin? What do you all think
that means?

los vascos

Can anyone tell me if a lot of vasque people from spain immigrated to
mexico. The reason im askin is because my mother is aguirre on her
mothers side and was i was told that the surname is vasque.

Here is some of the info I gleamed from that page that has the ships
from Spain. I have another book I was going to quote from later but some
of these "Mapas y Planos" have Padrones associated with them. I know for
the Colotlan area there are Padrones associated with them but if there
are for your specific area I'd have to look at that other book. Ask me
and I'll look it up. And yes I do realize that some of these are
duplicate entries, thats the way it was from the search engine results:

The Spanish Ministry of Education has setup a HUGE database of documents
in Spanish archives. The database is called AER. Most of the documents
have only a description (which anyway is incredibly useful to locate
documents concerning some of your ancestors in Spain), but some
documents have also the original image, among them the passenger lists!!!

The access to AER and its contents is somewhat complicated, to start, you
can access AER going to the page

Legado Latino Conference

I so much wished I could attend this conference. Look at the attached
Jpeg file for the schedule of fabulous topics to be presented at their
6th anual conference. There are some very knowledgable persons speaking
at the conference. Please attend if you can. And if you do I would
really like for you to make a presentation of what was discussed. .
.thanks. I would so much like to hear a presentation by Lyman Platt or
George Ryscamp or Ruth Schirmacher or. . .

If you agree mark your calendars for Oct. 18th, 2003 in Salt Lake City.

1818 Census of Villanueva

I looked on the Census but truthfully I didn't go through it slowly as
a thorough search requires. I just uploaded a
file that lists the names of the Ranchos found in the Villanueva
section of the 1818 Census [film #0168814].

for Santa Rosa de Malpaso these are the ranchos listed: Sesa de Arriba,
El Molino, El Escalon, Sera Chica, and La Noria.

let me know if you or anyone finds a specific Rancho that they would
like me to look at again.

Mi Prima Rosalinda

Rosalinda Ruiz; My great grandmother was Paula Banuelos,
of Jerez, Zacatecas. I wonder if one of your Banuelos relatives was Paula
Banuelos.  She married Francisco Macias of Jerez. Would you look up your
line and see if there is a connection? I wonder, is was jerez a big palce in the
1800's? Are there many churches there ? I could look up some things if I had the
names of the churches there in Jerez.
 Any way thank you.

Hi Angie--

I'm glad you related all this info.  First of all, the
Sandoval/Banuelos couple you mentioned doesn't sound familiar, but that
doesn't mean they aren't related.  The Banuelos line that Joseph and I
descend from is from Tepetongo, and my branch moved to Huejucar.  I think

Hi Angie--

BTW, Kitty and I are meeting on the 27th instead-- I had something come up on the 26th.  If you can make it, let me know.

Will you show me how Rose Holly's son is related to me?  I've started looking at her file, but have only seen some intermarriage, but no direct relationship.  Thanks.

I hope all is well with you--
