After the War of Independence from Spain was over they were no longer allowed to use the caste classifications and they called everyone a ciudadano (citizen). The change took many years to be followed which is why sometimes it isn't seen until around 1826. What you see in the document is an abbreviation of ciudadano.

August 24, 1821 is when Mexico gained it's independence from Spain. It took about 5 years to get the priests to stop using the caste system.

The second French Intervention that put Maximiliano de Hapsburgo in power lasted from 8 December 1861 – 21 June 1867.

Therefore, there was a period of 40 years between the independence of Mexico and the French intervention that put Maximiliano into power.

Help in Teocaltiche

Hi everyone,

I was wondering whether anyone could help me in locating information on Juan de Medina and Maria Gaitan from Teocaltiche around 1675.

Help with marriage Doc.

Can someone please help me translate this document in enlgish? And i'm also having a hard time reading it.Really appreciate it if someone can help me:)

The document says pretty much the same all other marriage records say. Here is a partial translation and the main information on bride and groom (I didn't see the names of their parents):

In the town of Nochistlán on such day 19th of May, of such year '94 .....
Groom: Geronimo Ruiz de Salazar, Español, parishoner of Tettcocoaltiche
Bride: Gertrudes Enrriquez, española, neighbour of this parish (Nochistlán)
No impediments for the marriage were found.

Hi Abram. You are welcome. I don't have any more information on him, this is the first time I hear anything about this person.

I have struggled with the same issue. I can read Spanish but these old documents in elaborate script and stilted language can be difficult. My suggestion is to save the page to your own computer then open it with a program like Windows Live Photo Gallery or the equivalent iMac program. Then you can blow it up and study the letters and words. Also take a look at other entries by the same priest. Sometimes they wrote more clearly in one entry than another. After a while the words start to emerge. The other thing is the language. Check out this resource for a glossary of colonial Spanish terminology: http://www.somosprimos.com/spanishterms/spanishterms.htm
I also use Google's online Spanish-English translator for any words I don't know: http://translate.google.com/?tl=es#es/en/

Good luck,

I have a Santiago de Pedroza who died before July 1656 and married Juana Bautista de Alva and their children were Marcos de Pedroza, Nicolás de Pedroza, Juan de Pedroza and Leonor de Pedroza. That's all the information I have, I was wondering if they could have been the same or related since there's similarities in the wife's name. If you have any information, I'd appreciate it too. This is where I'm stuck. Thanks!

Esteban,

I have a Santiago De Pedroza married to Juana de Acosta 3 Feb 1695 in
Aguascalientes, and have identified the following children: Apolonia

(b.1703), Angela de San Juan (b.1705), Vicente Celedonio (b.1708), Gertrudis
(b.1709), Juan Antonio (b.1711), Josepha Francisca (b.1713) and Petra

What additional information do you have on Francisco De Pedroza?

Hello Christie, your post wasn't sent out by email to the members of NR. Only those that visit the site will see your post. This has been happening intermittently for a while now.

A lot of the Teocaltiche records are missing and it is possible that the records you are looking for are part of the missing volumes. However, you should include all of Jalisco and Zacatecas in your searches in case the records are in another town. You should also look for dispensas of descendants of the people you are looking for.

Hello Armando, that is actually the process I have started for Teocaltiche and Aguascalientes. I did not consider Zacatecas, but I will certainly start searching. I am more familiar with Nuevo Leon. I have only been working on this line for about 3 months now, and Im still not quite familiar with which parish, town etc... any insight to lead me in the right direction is greatly appreciated, thank you!

I would also like to congratulate Claudia and her team of volunteers for all their great work in the Guadalajara Dispensas.
By the way, one of the familysearch links for these documents does not work. I reported it to them but I think it would be better if more people interested in these documents could do the same.
This is the familysearch path:

-Mexico, Jalisco, Catholic Church Records
-Guadalajara
-Diócesis de Guadalajara
-Matrimonios 1751

Instead of getting the images for the corresponding film #168008, I get images for film #577210, which belongs to Bristol County (Massachusetts), Register of Deeds (Deeds, vol. 1-3, 1687-1734).

Thank you Claudia, for your input on this issue. I very much agree with your perpective. In a truly academic and professional atmosphere, researchers share information with eachother. This I know from my years as a graduate student, (before the age of the internet!) One of the reasons I appreciate nuestros ranchos is precisely because it is a place when i can participate in the exchange of research discoveries. I can get help, and i can help others, just as you pointed out. This work is not pnly about family trees, fascinating as they may be. We all have pieces of the same extraordinary puzzle of the transformation of society in mexico over 500 years. The more we share with eachother, the clearer that picture becomes, and the better we understand the decisions and choices our ancestors made in marriage and migration. There are surely graduate students and academic historians out there who would find this forum a treasuretrove of leads to ethnohistorical sources- likewise guadajaradispensas. I truly appreciate the work you and the other volunteers do!

I'm looking for the following marriage records:

Estevan Castorena married to Maria Baltazar Peres in Rincon de Romos,
Aguascalientes around 1820 - 1823.

They came from Letras.

Estanislao Castorena married to Juana Maria Garcia in Rincon de Romos,
Aguascalientes around 1795 - 1797.

Antonio Castorena, married to Maria Luisa Garcia, not sure if it is still in
Rincon de Romos, Asientos or somewhere else around 1765 - 1768.

Any birth records on all of the above ancestors would be great!

Thank you!

Thanks to Joseph, Armando and everyone who has offered advice. Nuestros Ranchos has been the friendliest, most helpful genealogy group I've found.

I believe there is enough evidence now to say that my g-grandfather Teodoro de Alba was born Nov. 8 or 9, 1858 in Palos-Altos. His parents were Jose Anastacio de Alba and Mariana Gonzales. The paternal grandparents were Jose Antonio de Alba and Maria Feliciana Jaime. Maternal Grandparents were Reyes Gonzales and San Juana Guzman. Teodoro's paternal great grandparents were Rafael de Alba and Maria Gertrudis Cuellar; and Ignacio Jaime and Maria Eufracia Gonzales.

Teodoro had two older brothers Jose Miguel de Alba born 7 May 1854 and Francisco de Alba born abt. 1857. Teodoro married Isabel Guerrero on 7 June 1876. Francisco was married to Marta Garcia on 3 Nov 1877.

I also have ancestors that are de Alba through María de Alba Retamosa wife
of Francisco Cervantes Villaseñor and I have also studied the de Alba
family.

If you look at the baptisms of the parents of Inez de Alba you will see
that they are reported to be españoles. This does not match the story of
the mother being Indian. The age of the great grandfather of Mr. Compton
does not match with that of Jose Teodoro de Alba y de Alba.

The mother of Teodoro Alva Terrones has Indian ancestry and the age of
Teodoro Alva Terrones matches that of the great grandfather of Mr. Compton.

Teodoro Alva Terrones is more likely to the great grandfather of Mr.
Compton than Jose Teodoro de Alba y de Alba.

However, I have found a Teodoro Alba González that was 18 years old on 7
Jun 1876 when he married Isabel Guerrero. This means his birth year is
about 1858 which matches the birth year of Mr. Comptons great grandfather.
The maternal surname being González also matches. The mother of Teodoro
Alba González has mestizo ancestors which he could have considered to be
Indian based on their features.

The marriage record is at
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18684-54376-60?cc=1874591&wc…

There is a paper trail that shows that Teodoro Alba González was a direct
descendant of Joseph Alonso de Alba who was the first de Alba in Los Altos
born about 1579 and buried/deceased 26 Oct 1641 in Lagos de Moreno.

Since the paper trail is so good Y-DNA testing should be reliable if
another direct descendant of Joseph Alonso de Alba and a cousin of Mr.
Compton were to get Y-DNA tests.

Thanks Armando,

I agree that the

This is very interesting for a couple of reasons. I had been looking at baptism records for and found this: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-19053-16981-12?cc=1874591 &wc=12506238

It records the christening of Teodora de Alva, daughter of Anastasio de Alva and Mariana Gonsales, 20 days old on Nov 28, 1858. I was about to aks if anyone thought it was possible that the priest got the gender wrong, since the parents surnames would match and the DOB of Nov. 8, 1858 is just one day and one year off of what was recorded in his naturalization documents. Now it appears this is the same Teodoro whose marriage record Armando found.

But here is the bigger question: If Teodoro married in June 1876, could he have fled to the U.S. in July 1856 as claimed in his naturalization? When he married my g-grandmother Mary Ellen Marks in 1891 was he still married to Isabel. This could be one of those deeply buried secrets no one knew or talked about in our family. I’ll keep digging.

Thanks again for the help.

Steve

Thanks to everyone for you comments, tips and leads. I look forward to following up on them as I get time. I've done a lot of genealogy research on other branches of my family and have realize the need to separate good stories from fact. Even uncovered a few deeply guarded secrets along the way. I've always assumed that digging into Teodoro's past would be difficult, since we have so little information to go on. He had four children that survived him. One was my grandmother Birdie, but she was the youngest and was raised by her maternal grandmother, so didn't know her Dad very well. Her generation has all passed. There is only one grandchild left who knew him well. I plan to spend some time interviewing her in April, so may find out more then.

I've also assumed that the Mayan mother, Spanish stowaway father may have been a good story with little to back it up.

I've posted Teodoro's family portrait and certificate of citizenship in an album. The other details I have are that in his naturalization documents he claimed to be born on Nov. 9, 1856 and to have crossed the border near Laredo, Tx in July 1876. His obituary says he was born in Guadalajara, but his living granddaughter says it was San Jaun de los Lagos.

Just so you know, Katie, I'm working on some of these already. In order for people not to repeat the same film, they should contact Claudia Casillas so they can request an assignment.

For everyone in the group-- I encourage you to help with this great project-- I have realized that I get lots of personal satisfaction knowing I am helping others with their genealogy. I am indexing and arbitrating for the NR group for Familysearch and am working on the Dispensas. The great thing about this is I have found records useful to me in my genealogy, too.

I am very busy with work and life, so in the busy times I reduce my contributions, but when I have some free time, I do what I can to add to the genealogical knowledge of Mexico.

Hola Claudia:

Saludos.

Salvador, I've not touched the 1757 dispensas yet. My plan is to post at least 2-3 lists per week.

Claudia,

Thank you so much for these dispensations. It is people like yourself, with no thought of monetary gain, that will help group members, especially since the indexes in Family Search have gone missing, etc.

Sotelo and Tarinbaro

Hello

I've been going through some really old records, and I think I see the name Sotelo and the place name Tarinbaro on the first two lines of this image:

Comments

Comment

Hi Denise,

Great job finding that second Tarinbaro in the document (and the second mention of Fernando de Sotelo). I didn't believe such a place existed, but according to Google maps and Wikipedia there are indeed a town and municipality named Tarímbaro just north of Morelia, Michoacán. I can't read either the words after Tarinbaro, it may be an amount, it may be the name of another place, and then "pessos digo que sobre lo que le traspasse Juan Gutierrez de Bocanegra le rresto deviendo cien pessos (le resto debiendo 100 pesos; after what I transferred to JGB, I still owe him 100 pesos)"

I also noticed that many paragraphs start with the words "Y ten declaro", which should be an abbreviation for "Y también declaro".

Mr. Inclán's genealogical charts are a great template, I also used them when making my tree, but it is better to try to find the original sources of each claimed connection, just to make sure.

The Ecatepec that Bocanegra bought is in the State of Morelos. They mention the purchase and several of the names you wrote in the book shown in this link:

http://books.google.com.mx/books?id=V76hPwilk04C&lpg=PA419&ots=7sN2hUhz…

Good luck reading the rest of the document.

Thanks again for your help! I decided I will write Dr. Chipman and forward him the information, as he has an academic research interest in the Sotelo-Moctezuma family.

For myself this document is helping me learn to read colonial Spanish, which I need to be able to do if I am going to be able to go further with my family tree.Plus its fun finding names in old documents like this which are also listed in books like Encomenderos of New Spain, the people sort of come alive again.

Your explanation of Y ten solves a big mystery for me - muchas gracias!
I hope to be able to find an original source for the Villasenor link to Sotelo, that may take a week or a couple of months...

Denise

Hi Denise,
I think you are right regarding the T and the S and the rest of the words you identified. Still that word or set of words that looks like Tarimbaro is difficult to read. The part that you couldn't read between de and nueva españa is sta. It reads: desta (de esta) nueva españa.

Victoriano Navarro

Hi Victoriano
Thanks for your feedback. I have started an informal "dictionary" of the letters, words and phrases I have recognized, plus the ones you helped me with. I have found three other interesting bits of information:

-The name don fernando sutelo de villasenor shows up in line 2 on image 490.

-Tarinbaro is mentioned again: image 488 line 11 "Declaro que yo compre al secretario baragona (?) la estancia de Tarimbaro" followed by a series of words I cant read, then the name Juan Gutierrez de Bocanegra.

According to a genealogy on the internet made by John Inclan, Fernando Sotelo de Moctezuma married to Maria de Villasenor. But he did not provide his source...I checked Donald Chipmans book,Moctezumas Children, and wife of Fernando is not named.

Donald Chipman did mention that a person named Fernando Bocanegra bought Ecatepec (from Diego Arias de Sotelos sons) in 1619.

-Juan Rodrigues de Corona is also mentioned, worth noting because Maria de Villasenors mothers name was Catalina Corona, again according to John Inclans genealogy.

The testament itself is interesting, mentions slaves, amigos, amor. The more I try to read, the more I learn to recognize certain words (declaro and mando turn up a lot. Wish I had more time to study it, but need to get through the other pages - who know what else of interest might show up?!

Regards
Denise

Hi Denise,

This is what I read (current Spanish in parenthesis):
Line 1: Sotelo y otros munchos (muchos) que se
Line 2: hallaron a ello estar .n.aro yo hize (hice) la escritura
Line 3: porque Sancho Lopes me escrivio (escribió) la hizieze (hiciese)
Line 4: y que no se acavava (acababa) con la cuenta de pascuaro (Pátzcuaro) todo
Line 5: lo de mequacan (Michoacán)

Escritura is a document that states that you own a property, a deed. I think he is saying that he wrote a deed because Sancho López wrote to him asking to do it, and many persons served as witnesses.

Regards,
Victoriano Navarro

Comment

This is really hard to read, but I think the 4th and 5th lines may say:
"y que no se acavava con la quenta de pasquaro todo lo de mequacan".
In current Spanish:
"y que no se acababa con la cuenta de Pátzcuaro todo lo de Michoacán".
In english:
"and that it did not end with Patzcuaro's count/account all about Michoacán"
...whatever that means.

For the word pasquaro I figured out the letter S by comparison with the one on the worlds arzobispado and Francisco in the next to last paragraph of the first page on image 487 where it says: "en el arzobispado de Toledo hijo ligitimo de Francisco Gutierrez".

As for the letter P, I compared it to the ones in the worlds espiritu and personas in the second paragraph of that same page, where it says: "santissima trinidad padre hijo y espiritu santo tres perssonas y un solo Dios verdadero" (Holy Trinity, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, three persons and a single true God).

Regarding the words Sotelo and Tarinbaro, It would be great if you could find another example of the first letter of the page to see if it is indeed an S, and what you are reading as Tarinbaro may be several words all clumped together.

Best regards,
Victoriano Navarro

Comment

Hello Victoriano
Thank you very much for your feedback! I will do as you suggest and look for the letter S, and take a second look at what I think is Tarimbaro. Will post back after that...

Regards
Denise

Comment

Hello Victoriano

I think I found an "S" on the seventh line from the bottom on the left page of image 487 of the same set of images as the original link above. It looks like the words are "su legitima mujer" (precededed by a name) and in the line above looks like "hijo legitimo de" (preceded by a name and followed by a name). These names are in fact right before the reference to Conde de Coruna (the man named here was apparently majordomo for the "excelente visorey de ((?)) nueva espana el Conde de Coruna")

Still looking at Tarimbaro...

Regards
Denise

Comment

Hello Victoriano

Regarding the letter "T" for Tarinbaro, on image 491, last line on left hand page, I think I found the phrase "Todos ellos" with a T like the one on Tarimbaro, with word Todos again in the line above it.

I will also look at the other letters in what I think is Tarinbaro.

Regards
Denise

Comment

I took a second look at the previous page, and I think the last 1½ lines on the previous page say, "los testigos son Juan de Allala, Francisco (something or other) y don Frdo (Fernando?)". There was a Fernando Sotelo de Moctezuma, the son of Diego Arias and Leonor de Valderrama y Moctezuma.

death records

Hello All,

Comments

Comment

Mazo, I'm assuming you are looking at the records found here:

https://www.familysearch.org/search/image/index#uri=https%3A%2F%2Ffamil…

It doesn't help much to search by name if you're not using the index. Click on the county you want and scroll to the end of the list. Find the index for the year you want. Find the month and year of death, locate the name, and note the number assigned to the name. That is the number on the death certificate.

Death certificates are in order by year and certificate number.

Hope this helps

Hello Mazo

I don't know what records you are searching through but Ancestry will give you minimal information as far as name and date. In order to get an actual copy you have to contact the LA County Record Bureau directly or order it through Ancestry. LA does not make these records available to the public like Arizona and some states do for free. These records bring in revenue for the County. In order to send for the copy you do need the name and date of death. There is a fee but its not much if you contact the records bureau directly.

Hope this helps,
Barbara

I was just asking, how they are archived because they seem at times to be alphabetical, others by date so I was unsure.. but thanks for the help anyhow I appreciate the effort.

I found no images of the actual death record in California.. you can order one or go to the records hall to view an original. They do charge for a copy of  notarized record.

In a death record when giving the name of the person who died as a married
adult I've seen some records that give the spouses name and immediately
following the spouses name it has this phrase "de edad de". . .I know that
this means "of the age of" but why would it be after the spouses name. Just
speculating that this is referring back to the person who just died age.

What do you think? Have you seen the age of the person who died given
immediately after giving the spouses name or do you think it is referring to
the age of the spouse? If you think the latter why do you think it was
important to include the spouse age in the record?

Joseph,

It is referring to the age of the viudo or the viuda that is still living.
