Joseph Simon Gutierrez Coronado and Juana Ayala y Valdivia

I have recently connected myself to Joseph Simon Gutierrez Coronado and Juana Ayala y Valdivia.

Hello,

A while ago, I discovered a dispensa for one of Jose Simon's and Juana's children (Maria de San Juan Gutierrez Coronado y Ayala):

Dispensa Matrimonial entre Luis Antonio Salcedo y Maria de San Juan Gutierrez Coronado - Ocotlan, Jalisco (Mayo 23, 1725)

In it we find out that the novios are related through their Chavez Romero ancestry. We also find out that the parents of Jose Simon were Juan Gutierrez Coronado y Navarro (cc Juana de la Mora y Zamora). Unfortunately, it does not contain any information on Juana de Ayala's ancestry.

I hope this helps.

Hey Alex,

Because the Ocotlan books for those years are a nightmare, here’s Joseph Simon’s parents's marriage, 24 May 1671: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-G5RG-3?i=393&wc=3J6F-7M3

Juan Gutierrez Coronado’s parents were Juan Gutierrez Coronado cc Maria de Cabrera; Maria de Cabrera might be the daughter of Pedro Navarro Gaitan cc Maria de Cabrera, though I'm not sure. I say that, because Juan Gutierrez and Maria de Cabrera su muger were living in the house of doña Maria de Cabrera in the 1683 padron of Ocotlan, and though it doesn’t say she was a viuda, I can only suppose that doña Maria de Cabrera was viuda of Pedro Navarro Gaitan, since their children are living in the other houses. Bottom center:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939L-D92G-3?i=1215&cc=18833…

Either way, she's going to be a descendant of Martin Casillas cc Mencia Gonzalez de Cabrera.

That’ll keep you busy for a while!

Thanks for the record Manny!

Lucky for me I put almost everyone I find in my research in my tree regardless if I am I direct descendant or not if they connect to others already in my tree. I already descend from Martin Casillas and Mencia Gonzalez Cabrera through other lines so I had Maria Cabrera and Pedro Navarro Gaitan in my tree. The dispensa filled the gap I was missing.

What I have not worked on before is the Gutierrez Coronado lines which I am sure will send me me in those nightmare books you speak of.

I am not sure why Maria Cabrera is not mentioned as a viuda in the Padron but the family looks right and Pedro passed in 1655. Also, wow Morelia looks to have alot of relevant records for this family.

Based off some internet searches, seems like there is some confusion regarding Pedro Navarro Gaitan and his brother Diego Navarro Gaitan.

From my research I have found that Mateo Navarro and Geronima Gaitan had Pedro Navarro Gaitan m. Maria Cabrera and Diego Navarro Gaitan m. Cecilia Patino de Salseda. Maria Cabrera was the daughter of Francisco Casillas y Cabrera and Francisca Gutierrez Vasquez de Escobar.

Now Martin Casillas and Mencia Gonzalez de Cabrera also had a Maria Casillas who married Agustin de la Vega and Diego Navarro Gaitan. Timelines would suggest this Diego is the same as that who married Cecilia Patino de Salseda. Can anyone confirm that?

There's a dispensa that confirms that Maria Casillas (cc Pedro Navarro Gaytan) was a daughter of Martin Casillas and Mencia Gonzalez de Cabrera. In the following dispensa:

Dispensa Matrimonial entre Melchor Gutierrez Coronado y Ines Martin de Sotomayor, Tepatitlan (Enero 4, 1722)

We find out that groom and bride are related through their Casillas ancestry. Melchor is a descendant of Maria Casillas de Cabrera (cc Pedro Navarro Gaytan) and Ines is a descendant of Francisco Casillas de Cabrera (cc Maria Gonzalez de Hermosillo).

Daniel,

I appreciate the primary sources you are linking here! They are a great source of information. There is a discrepancy between our genealogies though so I hope we can figured out the correct one.

For clarity here is what I believe the relevant relationships to be:

Martin Casillas and Mencia Gonzalez de Cabrera had:

* Maria Casillas y Cabrera (1) m. Augustin de la Vega and Diego Navarro Gaitan
* Francisco Casillas y Cabrera (1) m. Francisca Gutierrez Vasquez de Escobar

Francisco Casillas y Cabrera (1) m. Francisca Gutierrez Vasquez de Escobar had:

* Maria Casillas y Cabrera (2) m. Pedro Navarro Gaitan
* Francisco Casillas (2) m. Maria Gonzalez de Hermosillo

Maria Casillas y Cabrera (2) m. Pedro Navarro Gaitan had:
* Maria Cabrera (3) m. Juan Gutierrez Coronado

I agree with your conclusions regarding the first dispensa between Geronimo Macias and Lugarda Estrada. I don't believe there is any info in it regarding the parents of Maria Cabrera (2), but I don't actually speak Spanish so I could be wrong.

Regarding the dispensa for Melchor Gutierrez Coronado and Ines Martin de Sotomayor, I can see the following:

Maria Casillas Cabrera-----hermanos-------Francisco Casillas Cabrera
Maria de Cabrera--------------------------Martin Casillas
Felipe Gutierrez Coronado-----------------Josefa Casillas Cabrera
Melchor Gutierrez Coronado----------------Ines Martinez de Sotomayor

and

Melchor Gonzalez de Hermosillo-----hermanos-------Maria de Hermosillo
Melchor Gonzalez de Hermosillo--------------------Martin Casillas
Francisca Gonzalez--------------------------------Josefa Casillas Cabrera
Melchor Gutierrez Coronado------------------------Ines Martinez de Sotomayor

In accordance with my numbering above that would be:

Maria Casillas Cabrera (2)----hermanos----Francisco Casillas Cabrera (2)
Maria de Cabrera (3)----------------------Martin Casillas
Felipe Gutierrez Coronado-----------------Josefa Casillas Cabrera
Melchor Gutierrez Coronado----------------Ines Martinez de Sotomayor

I think confusion lies in that both Martin Casillas m. Mencia Gonzalez de Cabrera and
Francisco Casillas y Cabrera (1) m. Francisca Gutierrez Vasquez de Escobar had children named Francisco and Maria. So the goal is to figure out under which parents Francisco and Maria (troncos of the dispensa) lie.

Here is a document that states Francisco Casillas Cabrera (2) m. Maria Gonzalez is the son of Francisco Casillas y Cabrera (1) m. Francisca Gutierrez Vasquez de Escobar and actually goes up the same line as the dispensa:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-6DS4-8S?i=426&cc=18745…

Here is also one of my sources for Maria Casillas y Cabrera (1) m. Diego Navarro Gaitan

Also on page 28 of this document:

https://www.museocjv.com/LIBROSDECLAUDIO/monografias/cuadernosinah.pdf

states that Maria Casillas y Cabrera (2) m. Pedro Navarro Gaitan was a nieta of Martin Casillas, although I am not sure if the info comes from a primary source or not.

Please let me know what you think.

I think the main issue here is whether there was a Diego Navarro Gaytan married to a Maria de Cabrera. Do you have any children attributed to Diego Navarro Gaytan and Maria de Cabrera? I haven't run across this specific couple given the time period we are dealing with (early 1600s Ocotlan/Poncitlan, etc.)

I can tell you that both Pedro Navarro Gaytan (cc Maria de Cabrera) and Diego Navarro Gaytan (cc Cecilia Patino de Salceda) were brothers - both children of Mateo Navarro and Geronima Briceno Gaytan. I know this given a partial copy of Geronima Briceno Gaytan's will that's included in the documents for a Capellania that Diego Navarro and Cecilia Patino founded:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939L-6C7Q-K?i=935&cc=1883388&cat=394235

As for the Casillas questions, unfortunately, it's not a family I've studied closely. As such, I can't offer much clarity on what generation the various Maria Casillas belong in, etc.

Comment

Daniel,

Gotchya. Thank you for linking the will.

No I have not found any children attributed to Diego and Maria in church Baptismal, Marriage or Death records. This all could be the cause of a notary mistake where years later Pedro is confused with Diego.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-6DS4-8S?i=426&cc=18745…

This link states a Cayetano Navarro was a descendent of Diego Navarro Gaitan implying children but this appears to be a testimony.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-6DS9-BP?i=355&cc=18745…

This link states Diego Navarro Gaitan was Maria Casillas' second husband.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-DGFB-P?i=180&wc=3JWY-Y…

This link says that Agustin de la Vega was the first husband. I have found one child to them, Juan, baptized 1606 in Guadalajara.

The PDF I previously linked states Diego married Maria and Pedro married a different Maria. It would be great to actually actually the source document.

Thats about it for Diego.

Nevertheless, thanks for the sources and discussion!

Daniel,

What is your opinion on the following:

Looking at that capellania you linked regarding Cecilia Patino de Salseda, there is the portion you mention regarding Geronima Gaitan's will. On the right page 7th line it says "pedro perez de camora mi hermano". Do you think Geronima actually had a brother with this name or perhaps a transcribing error where the original said yerno?

Hello Alex,

I've noticed that there was a custom amongst our ancestors (At least in Michoacan since I've only really seen it there) that they would call their brother/sisters-in-law their "brothers/sisters". I have seen the same with someone calling their mother/father-in-law, "mother/father". It was more or less a term of endearment it would seem. I think that the Pedro Perez de Zamora that Geronima is referring to might be her brother-in-law that married her sister (Leonor de Briceno Gaitan).

Daniel

Comment

Gah I'm a dummy. Yerno definitely was wrong on my part, I had meant cunado. Had no idea this was a Michoacan thing, good to know!

Also for anyone else following along. I just found a document that confirms Diego Navarro Gaitan m. Cecilia Petino de Salseda also married Maria de Cabrera daughter of Martin Casillas and Mencia Gonzalez de Cabrera. This is the moment where I wish I actually knew spanish...

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSDL-D35L-T?i=440&cat=…

Top left of page 441 "Diego Navarro y dona maria de cabrera mi muger difunta"
Top left of page 442 "Mencia Gonzalez mi suegra"
Right middle of page 442 "Geronima Gaitan mi madre"

Several pages before and after are relevant. I am not sure what this document is about.

Also how I found this document was seriously cool, at least to me.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-DGNC-G?i=164&wc=3JWY-Y…

This capellania has ripped up documents in it but I could see the date of 1631 and mentions Juan Sedano. I went to his protocolos and BAM something relevant!

Comment

WOW! That is a fantastic find and it confirms that Diego Navarro (Son of Mateo Navarro and Geornima Gaitan) was married twice! His first marriage with Maria Cabrera and his second marriage with Cecilia Patino de Salceda. Thank you for sharing such wonderful information!

One lingering question... Are there any primary resources that confirm the parents of Maria Cabrera (cc Pedro Navarro Gaitan, brother of this Diego Navarro Gaitan?)

Thanks again!

Comment

Daniel,

Right, so cool!

So a couple pages before in the protocolo is what you are looking for:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSDL-D35K-4?i=435&cat=…

"mencia Gonzalez de Cabrera viuda muger que fue de Martin Casillas"

"mencia Gonzalez de cabrera durante el matrimonio ... y de dicho mi marido ... hijos legitimos a dona maria de cabrera muger ... primero fue de agustin de la vega y segunda vez del dicho diego navarro"

This just shows you my level of spanish lol I can handle it when its similar to italian but thats it. Hopefully I read it right.

Whoops just realized I misunderstood your question. I'll leave this up and get you a source for Maria Cabrera cc Pedro Navarro Gaitan

Comment

We know for sure that (1) Maria de Cabrera cc Pedro Navarro Gaitan is different from (2) Maria Casillas cc Diego Navarro Gaitan because Maria (2) passed by the end of 1631 and Maria (1) was having children as late as 1642 (Mateo Navarro, Ocotlan).

So as far as a primary source expressly saying (1) Maria de Cabrera cc Pedro Navarro Gaitan is the daughter of Francisco Casillas y Cabrera and Francisca Gutierrez Vasquez de Escobar, looks like I don't have one. The relationship has to be pieced together using dispensas.

I think the quickest/easiest is using the sources from your previous post on this thread.

The dispensa for Melchor Gutierrez Coronado and Ines Martin de Sotomayor establishes
(1) Maria de Cabrera cc Pedro Navarro Gaitan is the sister of Francisco Casillas Cabrera cc Maria Hermosillo where the following document states Francisco Casillas Cabrera m. Maria Gonzalez is the son of Francisco Casillas y Cabrera m. Francisca Gutierrez Vasquez de Escobar and actually goes up the same line as the dispensa:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-6DS4-8S?i=426&cc=18745…

I believe I have more to support this but I have to leave for the airport and can take a better look when I am back on Wednesday.

Note my numbering for the Marias is different on this post than the previous one

Hope this helps!

Thanks again Alex for the additional documentation, clues, and guidance in helping clear up the confusion between the Pedro and Diego Navarro and the two Maria Cabreras. What I conclude from all the documents shared here (Dispensas, Capellanias, Protocolos, etc.) is the following:

Mateo Navarro and Geronima Briseno Gaitan were the parents of:

Diego Navarro Gaitan: First married to Maria Casillas de Cabrera (Daughter of Martin Casillas cc Mencia Gonzalez de Cabrera). His second marriage was to Cecliia Patino de Salceda.

Pedro Navarro Gaitan: He married Maria Cabrera (Daughter of Francisco Casillas de Cabrera cc Francisca Vasquez de Escobar)

Does that coincide with your conclusions as well?

Thank You,

Daniel

Yes I have the same in my tree!

Here is what I have for children of Mateo Navarro and Geronima Briseno Gaitan (so far as I only just started researching them):
*Pedro Briseno
*Bartolome Navarro cc Catalina Hurtado de Mendoza
*Diego Navarro Gaitan cc 1. Maria Cabrera daughter of Martin 2. Cecilia Patino de Salceda
*Pedro Navarro Gaitan cc Maria Cabrera daughter of Francisco

For fun here is what I have for the children of Martin Casillas and Mencia Gonzalez de Cabrera:
*Domingo Casillas, a priest
*Ines Casillas y Cabrera cc Diego Anzueta
*Mariana Casillas y Cabrera cc 1. Lazaro Sanchez Dominguez 2. Diego Sanchez Caballero
*Sebastiana Casillas y Cabrera cc NN Siordia
*Maria Casillas y Cabrera cc 1. Agustin de la Vega 2. Diego Navarro Gaitan
*Martin Casillas cc Elvira Arenas
*Francisco Casillas y Cabrera cc Francisca Gutierrez Vasquez de Escobar
*Rodrigo Casillas, a priest
*Juan Casillas

Hello,

To clear up Maria Cabrera's parents (cc Juan Gutierrez Coronado), I offer up another dispensa between Geronimo Macias and Lugarda de Estrada:

Dispensa Matrimonial entre Geronimo Macias y Lugarda de Estrada, Ayo el Chico (Enero 2, 1741)

In the dispensa we find out that Lugarda's ancestor, Maria Cabrera (cc Juan Gutierrez Coronado) was the daughter or Pedro Navarro Gaytan and Maria Casillas de Cabrera. Geronimo's ancestor, Ana Cabrera (cc Diego Macias Valadez) was also a daughter of Pedro Navarro Gaytan and Maria Casillas de Cabrera.

Hope this helps.

One of Jessica Alba’s great grandmothers, Francisca Sanchez, was born in Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco. It is through this grandmother that many people from Los Altos de Jalisco are related to her.

I had taken the information given on Francisca Sanchez’s from other posts that had named her parents and grandparents and continued the line through Urbano Ruiz De Esparza. However, Two primary documents have led me to believe that this information was incorrect. I have found a baptismal certificate of Francisca’s that identifies the same set of parents, but different grandparents. I have also found another baptismal document that identifies Francisca’s maternal grandparents with a different set of parents than the ones that had previously been provided. I had made the mistake of assuming that the other persons work was accurate because they held the title of “professional genealogist.”

Jessica Alba’s great grandmother, Francisca Sanchez still descends from Lope Ruiz De Esparza but through a different line.

Excellent work David! Congratulations on your efforts being rewarded with these results.

Jessica Alba is a distant cousin of mine through our descent from Lope Ruiz De Esparza and Ana Francisca Gabai Navarro. This means that many nuestrosranchos members are related to her through “Ruiz De Esparza.”

Jessica Alba has at least three lines of descent from Lope Ruiz De Esparza and Ana Francisca Gabai Navarro.

I also share with Jessica ancestors Juan Diaz de Leon and Jacinta de Sotomayor. Jessica has many of the surnames in her ancestry that we are researching here in nuestrosranchos.

Thanks for sharing,
Rick A. Ricci

PS I have a lot to share with you on the ancestry of Sor Juan Ines de La Cruz, much more information than what you have seen in published books.

Dear Members,

I have been trying to disentangle some of the early Autlán families. Some of it is on solid footing, but some of it is based on secondary sources that I am pretty sure are NOT correct. The problem is one of chronology and probably of people named similarly (here we go again). My questions concern the identity of the Father of Inés de Tapia y Aguayo. But I really want to see a primary source, because the secondary sources do not agree with each other.

It is certain that Conq. Antonio de Aguayo was from Portillo in Spain, that he was an hijodalgo, and according to Icasa was the son of Martín de Aguayo and Catalina de Ledezma. He was certainly married to Juana de Padilla as can be seen in the PARES link mentioned in an older post, image 3, and which says he had 5 children. The link still works, which is a Méritos y Servicios letter from 1562 still works:
http://pares.mcu.es/ParesBusquedas20/catalogo/show/122821

What is NOT a given is whether there is primary source evidence to prove that he (Conq. Here is my problem. If the Conq. Antonio de Aguayo married Elvira de la Peña, it would have had to have been AFTER Juana de Padilla died (which date I do not have but would have had to be after 1562). In her summary short work named “Familias Corona y Michel en Autlán de la Grana” Sylvia Herenia Corona Cortés quotes Dr. Villaseñor Border that Antonio de Aguayo would have married Elvira between 1533 and 1542. But this does not make sense based on the knows facts about his supposed daughter. He would in fact more likely need to marry her after Juana de Padilla. But as can be seen from the PARES link above, he likely married Juana de Padilla around 1550. file:///C:/Users/Sean%20and%20Rebekah/Downloads/FAMILIAS_CORONA_Y_MICHEL_en_Autlan_de_la.pdf

There is some agreement between secondary sources that AN Antonio de Aguayo is the father of Inés de Tapia y Aguayo (ca. 1590-1636), wife of Hernán González Corona (I) (1577-1622). The problem is that that would have to mean that Inés de Tapia y Aguayo would have had to be born at the latest by 1562, but she was having children in the 1610s, which would make her far too old. Her marriage is well attested in the Inventario de Bienes de Difuntos from 1622 http://pares.mcu.es/ParesBusquedas20/catalogo/description/3590623?nm as well as the “Anuario de la Academia de Genealogía y Heráldica ‘Mota Padilla’” of 1955, p. 97: “Que entre los hijos y herederos que quedaron por fin y muerte de Hernán González Corona y doña Inés de Tapia y Aguayo; quedaron tres menores, que son: Hernán González Corona, mayor de catorce años y menor de veinticinco, y Doña Petrona Corona, mayores de doce años y menores de veinticinco..."
Also on the same page of the Anuario:

The question is which Antonio de Aguayo? Jesús Amaya Topete in his work “Ameca” would suggest that this Antonio de Aguayo is not the same as the Conquistador as follows: "AGUAYO, ANTONIO - (Hijo de Francisco), casó con Elvira, hija de Hernán Ruiz de la Peña. En 1609 declaró en Autlán ser suyos dos sitios para ganado mayor y cuatro caballerías de tierra que compró a nombre de su yerno Hernán González Corona, casado con su hija Inés de Tapia y Aguayo, a Juan Bautista de Lomas y Colmenares. Este las recibió hasta 1610 del alcalde mayor de Autlán, y las traspasó a Aguayo, quien en 1612 las pasó a Hernán" p.3. As we can see from the above dates, there is no way for an Antonio de Aguayo, born in 1510, to still be making land purchases in 1609-1612.

So, again, my question for our valued members: does anyone know if the will for Antonio de Aguayo has been found? Or does anyone have primary source evidence showing that the Conq. Antonio de Aguayo is indeed the father of Inés de Tapia from his union with Elvira de la Peña?

My hypothesis at this point is that the Antonio de Aguayo thought to be the father of Inés de Tapia y Aguayo is probably one to two generations removed from the Conq Antonio de Aguayo Nothing else makes sense of the chronology.
Thoughts?

Many thanks!

Hi Paty ,

My name is Welester G. Alvarado and I´m hoping that you may have some time to look up the parents of my Great great grandfather . I only have that he was married for the first time that I know of on Nov. 8, 1833 . The fact that it does not show his parents tells me that he may have been married prior .

The records for him are from the Villa de Santiago, Nuevo Leon . Like I said Patty if you have the time . I don´t want to pressure you and I´ll understand if you won´t have the time .

Apart from that , have a great time and good luck !

Question what is a fosa?

On pg 41 in the middle right after (Hijo Legitimo suyo y de Flaviana Larra....fosa de 3rd Clase por 5 anos en el panteon municipal....)

The following is a link to the record.

Comment

In Mexican and Spanish municipal cemeteries, they usually do not have space to keep the bodies in the same grave perpetually, especially if the person does not have a lot of money to pay for a grave that is designated "a perpetuidad." So bodies are placed in a "fosa", a marked grave for 5 years. The initial 5 year period allows the body to decompose down to the bones, and they are then transferred to a "fossa común," a large common grave with other bones. Unfortunately, in practice this means that the graves are not marked with names after that initial 5 year period.

Private cemeteries often do have graves that ae perpetual. In essence you buy a piece of land for the body of your loved one.

Hope this helps!

Thank you both Manny and Sergio for your response. Their burial system seems quite complicated.
This has been a question ever since mom told me Great Grandma Florentina Delgado had her own Fosa (hasta tenia una Fosa). Knowing Florentina had, according to Mom, measurable wealth and part owner of Azogueros in Salinas, San Luis Potosi, I thought it was old Spanish for Crypt. I did not think to ask what that was so it went unanswered these past 17 years.

I have a follow-up question. Knowing that when I asked about my ancestors to mom, many of my ancestors had been buried in the Saucito including her Siblings and parents. I have gone to the cemetery in San Luis Potosi, SLP., many times to pay my respects. My Ancestors are still buried in their same location since the 1950 to the present. So I am a bit perplexed that mom would have been impressed that Great Grandma had her own grave? Was this lease on individual graves stopped at some time for the majority of people? Sorry for all this follow up rambling.
I really appreciate the cultural history both of you sent my way. I realize I will never know the answer of what mom meant unless I go to Azogueros in Salinas to search for Florentina's grave.
Thanks,
Sara (alias Simona)

Hi Sara,

If your mom thought it was notable that she had her own grave, it may have been one of the ones for perpetuity, which as I noted above, means it is more expensive. Or it may have been a crypt (see below). There are at least six kinds of graves (that I am aware of) in Mexico. Before the cemetery reforms at the end of the 1700s in Spain by Carlos III, people usually buried their loved ones inside the church, under the floor all over the place (1). The wealthier people had graves underground with their own access points on the sides of the church or under the altar which could still be accessed years later and future generations interred. This second kind of grave is what we would call a crypt (2). After the reforms of Carlos III they started actual cemeteries around the church with graves that look more like a park (3). In addition then there is a fourth kind of grave inside the church, or around it in an underground space where the graves are in the wall (4). In Mexico, municipal cemeteries started in the 1860s and became popular because they were cheaper (5). These are the kind I mentioned in my prior post. Finally there are the private cemeteries (6).

Hope this helps!

Sergio

Thank you Sergio. I really love the history of why something came about or why it is. You certainly have made a simple boring question into an interesting history lesson. Thank you.
Sara

Comment

Thank you for the history lesson, Sergio! Interestingly enough, my father was from a region in the mountains of Leon, Spain, called Omaña, and while researching his lines, I would read about ancestors who were buried in the floor beneath the local church. Knowing how small that church was, I couldn’t fathom how, after so many centuries, so many corpses could rest beneath its floors (nor in the adjoining cemetery, which is no bigger than my garden)! I was unaware of the existence of ossuaries.
But just today, I was visiting a facebook group dedicated to Omaña, and someone had posted a story with photographs about how the residents of a local pueblo had recently reconstructed their church’s ossuary (la “gusera,” as they call it), “donde se guardaban los huesos de los difuntos una vez que se llanaba el suelo de la iglesia donde estaban enterrados. Este espacio se señalaba habitualmente con una o varias calaveras o tibias clavadas en el muro”.

Thank you, again!

I can tell that you watched the recent episode of "Finding Your Roots" on PBS and you are researching the lineage of Melissa Villaseñor. By the way, very disappointing show, no mention of el Rancho de La Piedra Herrada, San Jose de Gracia, Tepatitlan, Los Altos de Jalisco, or even the state of Jalisco. No mention of our rich history, heritage, culture, traditions, and genealogical treasures. No...Dr. Gates only likes to focus on slave owners, and slaves. I have completed my investigation, if you would like some info.

Comment

Hello Steven,
You are right that I watched that recent episode, and was continuing the research on their ancestries. The researchers for that show called me up and said that they had seen my work posted on nuestrosranchos and wanted more information. They were very interested in the Lomelin ancestry.

Dr. Gates sent me a nice email congratulating me on my research. I really appreciate the email, but you are right, it would have been nice to hear, or see in the credits an acknowledgment of all the information collected from nuestrosranchos.

And yes I would like to see how far you got in continuing the ancestral lines of Mario Lopez and Melissa Villaseñor. I connect him to the Alvarez Tostado lines in Jalisco and Zacatecas. Melissa has much Los Altos de Jalisco ancestry/Aguascalientes/Zacatecas ancestry. I connect her to my De La Torre, Perez de Paredes and Perez de Contreras ancestries. There are many more ancestral connections than those that I have named here.

I agree with your statement,
“ very disappointing ……..no mention of el Rancho de La Piedra Herrada, San Jose de Gracia, Tepatitlan, Los Altos de Jalisco, or even the state of Jalisco. No mention of our rich history, heritage, culture, traditions, and genealogical treasures.”

In defense of the show, it is only half an hour long, and they tackle the ancestry of two people in this half hour. That is very little time. And in both of those main ancestors that he coverered, Baltazar Temino de Banuelos and Diego Ochoa Garibay, I have much more information on their ancestries that he did not have.

Just thinking aloud: “How about you and I putting together a series of episodes presenting our rich history, heritage, culture, traditions, and genealogical treasures.” It could not be covered in half an hour. We could produce many interesting episodes.

Thanks,
Rick

PS. After an episode on “Roots” that showed Jessica Alba’s ancestry, I also did more research on her ancestry and connected her repeatedly to my Ruiz De Esparza lines, among others.

I attempted to convince Dr. Gates that Raiders coach Tom Flores and Raiders quarterback Jim Plunkett’s ancestries would be an interesting show, and I even offered my research into their ancestries. If he had looked into my research into their family trees, he would have found genealogical treasures that would interest many of us. Jim Plunkett descends from Baltazar Temiño de Velasco, just like Mario Lopez. Tom Flores descends from Lope Ruiz De Esparza, just like Jessica Alba and Melissa Villaseñor.

Any idea where Clara Maya was born? Simon Garcia and his parents identities explain all of the children's last names except for Ramirez and Cortes. These of course can come from earlier generations of his or from Clara Maya's family. Perhaps Clara could also be a Cortes? All three of your possibilities seem to be possible.

Geez these hints are killing me!

Hello RRojas,
I came across a lot of records pertaining to people from the areas you are seeking in La Yesca & Amatlan de Jora archives. I will look out for the Catano name. I don't recall seeing it, but alot of people from Totatiche, Monte Escobedo, Mesquitic & Huejuquilla el Alto Area.

Best.

Thank you Apozolco,

I will have to check those records again in Jora and Yesca. I've researched those records in great detail over the years for my other ancestors (Rojas, Villavicencio, Ysastegui, Gonzalez, Bañuelos, de la Paz, Ceniceros, Arriaga, Carlos de Godoy, Gallegos, Rebeles just to name a few. Another look at those records will help.

Thanks

Welcome Walter to the Nuestrosranchos community. Like you, I am also experienced in researching New England Genealogy. I have a brother-in-law and a sister-in-law that descend from the original New England settlers. This past weekend my nephew, Robert Gregory Nash, married a descendant of New England settlers, so we now have three descendants of the original settlers in the family tree.

To Walter and Jorge,

I would like to add my two cents in response to Jorge’s post. I have not found any evidence that links Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar y Mendoza Marqués del Canete Eleonor de la Cerda y de Aragon to my Diego Romo de Vivar ancestor.

Hi Netchemist,
Yes, the Romo de Vivar are the ancestors of a lot of people from Aguascalientes, I also descend from both Diego Romo de Vivar y Rangel and Capitan Romo de Vivar y Rangel, both children from Capitan Diego Miguel Romo de Vivar y Perez de Utiel (who died on July 11th 1659). They had a lot of children and the names are repeated in several generations.
Here is a list of ancestors I have found, I don’t have a lot of documents but I have found these persons using data from My Heritage and Family Search.
Capitan Diego Miguel Romo de Vivar y Perez de Utiel was the son of
• Diego Romo de Vivar Ponce de Leon born in 1550 in Rielves and died on Nov 7th, 1610, married to Catalina Perez de Utiel, born in Rielves on March 12 1564. Son of:
• Diego Maria Romo de Vivar Lopez born in Feria, Badajoz, Extremadura in 1520, married to Catalina Ponce de Leon Fernandez y Castañeda born in Feria, Badajoz, Extremadura in 1525. Son of:
• Diego Romo de Vivar y Ponce de Leon, born in Manzanares el Real, Madrid on Nov, 3rd 1489, died in Toledo in 1536, married to Maria Lopez born in 1500. Son of:
• Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar y Mendoza Marqués del Canete, born in Guadalajara, Castilla in 1466, died in Valencia on Feb 22nd 1523, married to Eleonor de la Cerda y de Aragon, born in Guadalajara, Castilla in 1472, died in Jadraque Castle, Guadalajara, Castilla on April 8th 1497.
This data may help you to make more research around the Romo de Vivar. If you want I can share some more information about the Romo members around Aguascalientes. (They had up to 11 children each).

Juan Felipe Cabral (Jerez de García Salinas) ca. 1760

Does anyone has information regarding Juan Felipe Cabral? He gave origin to the Cabral surname in Zacatecas, arriving ca.

Comment

Yes dear fguevara_robles, I have info on that subject and it is clearly a legend. No that Felipe Cabral didnot existed, but he was not Juan Felipe but Noverto Felipe and sure, he married Doña Josefa Saldivar, the daughter of Marcelo (or Marcelino) Saldivar and Juliana Felix (or De los Reyes Félix). It is dificult to precisely know when and how the legend started, but I think this was very likely a way to fill in a blank spot in the genealogy or a strange way to detach from the ancestry adding some spicy tale to it. I might understand that because at the time the legend was created people have not the resources we have now to do research from the comfort of home. Once, my aunt Cabral told me "that is just not true and my brothers invented that legend". When I first put online my tree, elaborated by my dad upon the family tales and memories, a tree that started exactly with the "Juan Felipe Cabral, born in Portugal in the first quarter of the XVIII century, very soon I got an email from Salvador Cabral Valdez, showing interest in my tree and then we started a fruitfull exchange that lasted few years. This exchange started in the year 2006 and the first subject was precisely about Juan Felipe. He suggested that probaly he was not from Portugal and then draw my attention to the Family Search website and showed me a registar of Felipe Cabral marriage with Josefa Saldivar. That was a real discovery for me that proved beyond doubt that Juan Felipe, the portuguese, was in fact Felipe Noverto, born in Jerez in 1748, the son of Hermenegildo Cabral and Thomasa Hernández (Fernández) and then married Josefa Saldivar in 1775. Further research over the following years proved also that he belonged to the Cabral line started by Domingo Cabral and Ana Catalina Pinedo Caldera. One of the youngest sons of them was Bartolomé, born around 1647 and later married Melchora de los Reyes. One of their sons was Nicolás Cabral, who later married Marta de la Encarnación around 1710 more or less. One of their sons was Hermenegildo, who married Thomasa Fernández in 1739 and lived then in el Puesto del Sotano, Jerez. They were the parents of Vitalia, Rosalía and Felipe Noverto Cabral.

Some in the family received these news as great news, others feel a little deceived knowing no portuguese Juan Felipe existed, but that is the true and we cannot do anything about. As for myself I felt very happy to be able to track the roots that far.

Many years later, Salvador Cabral Valdez gave me some news: he found that Domingo Cabral was the son of Juan Cabral Rodriguez, a "gambusino" from Galicia, that arrived to the Jerez area in 1588 and married a native woman around 1600. But that is another story and I would love to get into it in a new post. Was this Juan Cabral from Galicia the origin of the tale you bring forth? We cannot discard it, but cannot assert it neither. I hope to comeback to the subject soon.

Hola Jesús,

I was wondering if you had any information on Pedro Cabral from Jerez born around 1740? He married Theresa Ortiz probably around 1760. I'm guessing he's from the same family as your Cabral's but I don't have any other information.

Danny

Comment

In response to Danny Alonso I have seen his christening record of Balbino Cabral, the son of Pedro Cabral and Teresa Ortis, and while I have not found anything that points to Pedro's parents, in this record his "padrinos" are "Meregildo" Cabral and María Isabel de la Torre and that can be an important clue. Clearly "Meregildo" is Hermenegildo, sometimes also Esmeregildo. Being Cabral clearly is a relative, maybe the brother of Pedro, an important thing is that María Isabel de la Torre is the wife of Juan Antonio Cabral Ubillos, and he had a son whose name was Hermenegildo. My hipothesis here is that Hermenegildo is the brother of Pedro Cabral and María Isabel de la Torre the mother of Pedro Cabral. There is another Hermenegildo Cabral, my direct ancestor, who was the first cousin of Juan Antonio Cabral Ubillos and this one was his "padrino" in the marriage of my Hermenegildo, I mention this just to stress the importance of the "padrinos" as clue for finding relationships. If my hipothesis is correct, Pedro was then the grandchild of Juan Cabral Rodarte, grandson of Domingo Cabral. In other words: Domingo Cabral >> Juan Cabral Pinedo >> Juan Cabral Rodarte >> Juan Antonio Cabral Ubillos >> Pedro Cabral de la Torre. More research needs to be done to confirm or discard this, but I thing is worth to consider it as plausible. Saludos.

Wow, thank you so much. This is great information. I've only recently started doing genealogy again after a few years so it'll take me a little bit to get back into things. I do know that I think I have the records of three children but the records don't really show anything. Nothing that would point in any particular direction. But this hypothesis makes sense and I initially had this as the probable direction but now it seems even more so.

Danny

Comment

In family search I already put Pedro Cabral as son of Juan Antonio. I know is an hipothesis but it doesn't hurt to have it there while more info appears.
Another clue: Pedro Cabral's full name was Pedro Antonio, then it makes sense with the habit of naming a son with some of the father name, in this case Juan Antonio.

Comment

If your Cabral gave origin to the Cabral name, he must've come before 1760. I have a Pedro Cabral married to Theresa Ortiz and theyre both from Jerez de Garcia Salinas, Zacatecas, Mexico, but, they would've been born before your Juan Felipe Cabral probly close to 20 years before your cabral. they were born sometime in the 1740s. But i want to know about your Cabral cause if he is the first Cabral, he may be the father of my Cabral. Do you know who he was married to?

Danny C. Alonso

Comment

Yes, he was married to Josefa Saldivar in 1760 in Jerez de Garcia Salinas. So far I know they had 10 children with the names: Francisca, Juan José, Josefa María, Nepomuceno, Pantaleon (my direct ancestor), Dionicia, Castulo, and María. I also have another record that he might be related to Esmeregildo Cabral and Tomasa Hernandez, but I'm not very sure about this.

Comment

Maybe my Pedro Cabral is a brother to your Juan Felipe Cabral, because my
Pedro Cabral and Theresa Ortiz are having children in the 1760s so my Pedro
Cabral is about the same age as your Juan Felipe Cabral and theyre both
from Jerez de Garcia.

no i dont know anything about him. i only have their names from the birth
of their grandaughter Maria Estafana garcia:

but if you look on family search you can see that Pedro Cabral and Theresa
Ortiz had children in the early 1760s so he has to be close in age to your
person.

Here are two interesting court cases that may shed light on the ancestry of Pedro Yanguas and on the identity of the mother of Ana Carillo De Peralta Regada and of her half sister Ana De Peralta

First Case:
* Título:
PEDRO DE YANGUAS Y ANA CARRILLO DE PERALTA contra GASTON DE PERALTA
* Serie:
Procesos judiciales. Ochoa-Sentenciados
* Productor:
CORTE MAYOR DE NAVARRA
* Fechas:
1547.01.28 - 1547.08.12
* Lugar:
LOGROÑO - LA RIOJA - ESPAÑA
FALCES - NAVARRA - ESPAÑA
* Contenido:

Second case:

Título: ANA DE PERALTA contra GASTON DE PERALTA
Serie: Procesos judiciales. Solano-Pendientes
Productor: CONSEJO REAL DE NAVARRA
Fechas: 1547.12.02 - 1553.12.31
Lugar:
342 Folios
Referencia ES/NA/AGN/F017/086296

I would assume that the larger dote is for the legitimate daughter Ana, and the smaller dote for the illegitimate daughter Ana but that isn’t always the case. Sometimes the illegitimate children are given more.

I descend also from Villaseñor, but unfortunately I have not been able to go further beyond José Nicolás and Teresa Ramirez that married in Bolaños in 1778, then their first daughter Victoriana was born in Tlaltenango in 1779, the second daughter Estefana was born in 1780 in Teul and then José George in Ojo Caliente around 1783. This one married Inocencia Colunga in 1812, in San Francisco Villa de Reyes, SLP and had 8 or so sons and one or two daughters, my tatarabuelo Canuto Villaseñor Colunga was one of his sons, born in 1821 and he then moved to Guanajuato, where the family stayed for the next generations.
I have not been able to find the parents of Nicolas Villaseñor, the marriage record doesn't make any mention of them and the Información Matrimonial seems to be in a lost book, and the only possible Padrón of Bolaños is from 1770 and they don't appear there, so I guess it is going to be very difficult to go past them. But who knows, maybe somebody here have a hint or tip to follow.

Comment

Yes, but padrinos names have no clue. I am now finding some books on informacion matrimonial that may have theirs, but going page by page is slow. I am interested in this line because the Villaseñor name is in my mother name, but from my father I descend directly from Aldonza de Villaseñor y Avalos, married to Juan Dozal Madriz, although the Villaseñor name didnot lasted long. It is certainly a family that have spread wide thru Jalisco and Michoacán mostly. Most of my family lines, as well as a lot of friends, have Villaseñor in their trees.

Comment

Dear Manny,

I felt that it was time to stop adding new information, stop researching other lines, and just focus on writing and publishing a book. I have more than enough information to get the book done but you had to throw a wrench in my plans.

The line that I had put together was based on me trying to make sense of the data in front of me, but since most genealogist had a different line I did not pull more threads since it was only possible in my mind and not proven. When you provided information that debunked the line of the other genealogists you made me look at my information again in a different light because it was no longer an exercise in making sense of what I had before me but the line with the highest probability of being the actual true lineage. This set into motion working all afternoon and night gathering more information and putting all the pieces together. It is so much information, and I need to review it after some sleep, so I won't post the findings at this time. What you have done is made relevant all the the information that I had collected when I had mistakenly believed that Sancho Sanchez el comendador was the same person as Sancho Sanchez Señor de Arnedo. Once it had been proved that they were not the same person, I had felt a sense of loss for all the time I had spent deciphering that tangled ancestral web. But now that time isn't wasted because your information connects one of my family lines to that tangled web. Your one little piece that didn't seem of much importance was the last straw that moved a mountain.

A million thanks,
Rick A. Ricci

Dear Manny,

Thanks for the info. The more puzzle pieces we add to the puzzle the greater the probability we have of visualizing how the pieces fit together. You never know when a seemingly insignificant piece actually is the glue that brings a line together. There are many pieces involving the Villaseñor-Orosco, Boccanegra, Delgadillo, Davalos, Cervantes family lines These families intermarried over centuries so we are working on all of these lines at the same time. As long as we keep plugging away, every once a while we will connect a line to the first immigrants. The piece that you provided that lead to solving the Cuevas Villaseñor line still has me in a state of euforia. I am beyond cloud nine. Your little puzzle piece hit two birds with one stone. It solved my Regina Ines Cuevas Villaseñor line, while also leading me to work overtime on figuring out the Coría Peralta conundrum. Regina Ine's line is very important to me personally because it connects me to two lines that I have been working on in Italy and Europe that go back many centuries, with many interesting stories.

Thanks again,
Rick A. Ricci

Hi Rick,

You're welcome, and here's another batch of puzzle pieces. There might be dupes from my last posts - there's just so many, it's hard to keep track. Most of these are from Arquidiocesis de Morelia, but there might be some from Sagrada Mitra. This oughta keep you busy for a while!

Regina Villaseñor de la Cuevas’s descent from royalty through her Peralta ancestors.

A few notes labeled A through H before the tree.

Note A.
A small minority claim that García Martínez Peralta and Ana Sánchez Ruiz de Azagra are the parents of “Mosén Pierres de Peralta “el Viejo”.

Many people claim that 2.”Mosén Pierres de Peralta, el Viejo” was the illegitimate son of Charles II De Navarro d’ Evereaux.

Both are mistaken as their is an extra generation which shows that Mosen Pierre De Peralta “el Viejo” (Pedro Perez de Peralta) is a grandson of both García Martínez Peralta and Ana Sánchez Ruiz de Azagra and king Carlos II “el malo” and queen Juana De Francia

Note B
Geronimo Lopez “el Mozo” and his wife, Ana Carillo de Peralta came from the upper high class. Their immediate descendants married into other upper high class society like the Villaseñor, Lomelin, Santiago, Ovande, Alvarez Nuñez, Rivadeneyra, and Cervantes families to name some of them.

Note C
The Diego Coria III that marries a daughter of Geronimo Lopez el Mozo and his wife, Ana Carillo De Peralta, is a descendant, but not a son, of Conquistador Diego Coria I

Note D
I was only going to post a line of descent without any stories but decided to give a glimpse of the many stories to go along with this family tree. One of the stories involve the French civil war between descendants of the same woman, but from different fathers. She was forced to separate from her first husband because they were too closely related. It was mainly because of jealousy and politics that there was a complaint. Since she was forced to separate from her husband, she marries marries a second husband and has more children. Then the jealousy and politics really come to a boiling point as now she is being accused of bigamy by the people who said that her first marriage wasn’t valid. She provided for separate inheritances of the two families, but eventually her descendants are involved in a big civil war that involves much of France. There are many other interesting stories like a Frenchman being held prisoner in London by his distant cousin, the Black Prince Of England. While he was under lock and key, he played chess and socialized with his distant cousin. There is also a connection that contributes to France backing Enrique II in its civil war between King Pedro the Cruel of Castilla and his half brother, Enrique II.

Note E
One of the ancestors, the Cardinal, is deeply involved in the politics in Castilla. He becomes a big enemy of King Ferdinand II of Aragon, the Catholic King..

Note F
Many of these people have multiple marriages, but I tried to only list the spouses that are the biological parents.

Note G
There are many lines of ancestry to kings of France, Navarra, Castilla, Leon, and England.

Note H
This Villaseñor line that Regina descends from is related to a Villaseñor D' Avalos line. Regina’s maternal grandfather, Jose de Villaseñor Figueroa, was married twice . Through his first marriage to Maria Delgadilla y Bocanegra D'avalos you have a line of descent that used Villaseñor D'avalos. Regina Villaseñor descends from the second marriage so she doesn't have D'avalos in her ancestry.

Regina Villaseñor de la Cuevas’s descent from royalty through her Peralta ancestors.

1. Charles II the bad Rey De Navarra and Juana De Francia o De Valois
2. Pierre de Nabarra Evreux, conde de Mortain (b. 31/Mar/1366, Évreux, Eure, Normandy, France; d. 29/July/1412) with Mistress Ana Martinez De Peralta (daughter of García Martínez Peralta and Ana Sánchez Ruiz de Azagra) Pierre is married to another woman.
3. Pierre Perez De Peralta, señor De Aldonsilla, (known as “Mossen (Monsegneur) Pierre” [consejero real] Aka “Mosén Pierres de Peralta “el Viejo”. In 1416 he is named "ricohombre” in Navarra. Acting ambassador in París (1398, 1404, 1408 y 1409) in the conflict between the "armagnacs" y "borgoñones". Ambassador in Castilla (1412) and Aragón (1413 - 1414), ] ( He is often confused with his father, situation which repeats with his son “el menor or el joven”) [el mozo is more often reserved for “junior” and el menor or el joven is more often used for the third in line with similar names, ] He is married to Juana Ezpeleta y Garro, ( daughter of Ogier de Garo y Chatillon and Juana Ezpleta y Echauz, señora De Ezpleta)
He is often confused with his father as he continued his father’s work as key advisor to the king of Navarra. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a6/MosenPierresFoto.JPG. First marriage: 27/Dec/1440 in “el Palacio Real de Olite” with Ana de Brabante, illegitimate daughter of Antonio de Borgoña. Aka Antonio De Brabante, duque de Brabante, Lothier y Limburgo, conde de Rethel,
5. Juana Peralta Regado m 22/Nov1467 with Troilo (o Zoilo) Carrillo (conde de Augusta, in Italy, illegitimate son of Cardenal Alonso Carrillo de Acuña
6. Alonso de Carrillo De Peralta, I marqués de Falces (b. circa 1450, married first wife Ana Velasco y Padilla ( daughter of Luis Fernandez De Velasco y Manrique De Lara and Ana De Padilla y Manrique De Lara.
Antonio had two children with another woman. One of these other children was also named Ana. The two Anas married and both sued their brother for their “dote” as it seems their father had passed away at the time of their marriages. Both these lawsuits are archived and if we could read them then we would find out which of the two Anas descends from Ana Bosquet y Lucy, and which descends from the other woman. The lawsuits may even tell us the name of the other woman. These documents are presently unavailable for review.
8. Ana Carrillo de Peralta (Regado was part of the surname with some of the women, sometimes it is spelled a little differently but lost my notes with the other spelling) married Pedro de Yanguas, regidor perpetuo de la ciudad de Logroño.
9. Ana Carillo De Peralta (named after her mother) married Geronimo Lopez “el mozo” (born in 1537) (Tesorero Real y Regidor, takes the position over after his father retires), [son of Geronimo Lopez “el viejo” (b.1488) (Also Tesorero Real y Regidor), and Catalina Alvarez De Cabrera (descendant of the house of David; she has an ancestor that is a sister of a famous Jewish theologian that became a Catholic Theologian.] This is Geronimo el mozo’s second marriage out of three.
10. María Peralta Regado Mendoza marries Diego Coria, Maria becomes a widow at an early age and becomes a nun before her father writes his will.
11. Coria Peralta ( the source is not clear as to whether #12Manuel is the son or grandson of #10Diego Coria And María Perlata Regado Mendoza
12. Manuel Coria Peralta Regado m. ca. 1630 to Catalina Lomelin (bap. 17/May/1607) (daughter of Luciano (Luis) Lomelin and Maria Del Olmo
13. Bernarda Lomelin Peralta (bap. 25/Oct/1632) Chilchota, Michoacan m. José de Villaseñor y Figueroa
15. Regina Villaseñor AKA Regina de la Cueva m. to Miguel De Hermosillo (Miguel Gonzalez De Hermosillo, Luis Miguel De Hermosilo, Miguel Muñoz de Hermosillo)

Update:
Many genealogists have concluded that Regina and Ynes are two different people and not one person. If they are different people then they are sisters as they have the same parents.

Dear Manny,

The data you provided, in addition to what we already have, leads me to believe that there is a high probability that we will find The parents of Gonzalo de Avalos Tovar de Villaseñor and Antonia Hurtado de Mendoza in Michoacán records.

Here is a previous post that is about "San Miguel de Los Alva" and also mentions Cristóbal Villaseñor:

By Xayme - Posted on 22 February 2009

While I was in Mexico several years ago I looked desperately this place. Anyone familiar with the area know that there are several "San Miguels" in the "nuestros ranchos" area. I went to all of them. Or at least I thought I did.

It wasn't until I came back to the U.S. did I come in contact with a distant cousin who happens to be a historian for Encarnacion de Diaz. I'm extremely thankful to him for the help he's given me and for his research. He also helped me find THEE San Miguel mentioned in my ancestors records. I also have photos if anyone is interesed. I hope this information can help someone else doing research in the same area.

If you have ties to this place or have more data on it's inhabitants during the 1600s please conatct me. This the part of my research where I have hit a dead end.

The following is an exerpt from an email my cousin Arq. Rodolfo H. Hernandez Ch sent me:
==================================================================

San Miguel de los Alba is located at the foot of the cerro de los Gallos, in the current municipality of Encarnacion de Diaz, and it is not the same San Miguel that is mentioned in the Llanos del Tecuan, neither is it the same San Miguel that you located in a map and belongs to the state of Queretaro.

El puesto de San Miguel de los Alba was founded at the beginning of the XVII century, when it belonged to Alonso of Alba, married to Doña Leonor de Retamosa, daughter of Nicolas Macias and Leonor de Retamosa who were proprietors of extensive lands in the actual municipality of Encarnación.

This hacienda or puesto de San Miguel de los Alba, depended on the village of the Asuncion de las Aguascalientes and their inhabitants were obligated to be baptized, married and buried in the parish of this village (you can know who lived their by checking the microfilms of the Iglesia del Sagrario de Aguascalientes, corresponding to the XVII and XVIII century). In 1752 a chapel was built dedicated to San Miguel Arcangel in this hacienda, with donations from Miguel de Alba and Cristobal Villaseñor, beginning to beginning to function as a vicariate, carrying books and registrations of baptisms that were made until the year of 1778, date in which said hacienda goes on to form part of the parish of in that passes this country property to be part of the parish of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnacion de los Macias (before named el Sauz de los Macias)

After the death of Don Alonso Alva, his hacienda continued in ownership by his descendants, the Alva family, until the begingings of the century. XX. during this time the residents and surnames grew through marriage connections.

And all were devoted to the agriculture and and cattle raising to supply the trade with the north of the country.

I had originally posted that I was not a descendant of the Villaseñor De Avalos. I was wrong. My ancestor Cristobal Villaseñor is a descendant of a Villaseñor de Avalos line. The other Villaseñor lines, of which there are a few, would not fit the time frame. I had originally only researched other Villaseñor lines. I only started researching the Villaseñor De Avalos connections to help out with Manny's research. This research has been useful in figuring out what I believe are the earliest connection between these two families as Gonzalo De Avalos Villaseñor Tovar could only descend from one of two possible connections as he was born before all the other Villaseñor and De Avalos marriages. This is based on information collected from my Manny's, Chris's, Danny's and my research, and the information in "Retonos de España en la Nueva Galicia" by Mariano Gonzalez Leal. There are many pieces to this puzzle and I believe that I have put together two possible lines of descent.

Marcelina posted different great grandparents from the great grandparents listed by Mariano Gonzalez Leal. She found a tree that someone else had compiled. If the line that Marcelina found is correct then neither one of these two lines is correct.

Here are the two possible lines of descent:

First possible line

1). Alfonso Fernandez Villaseñor and Elvira Osórez (daughter of Fernando Osórez maestro de Santiago)

2). Fernan A. Villaseñor and Aldonza Gutierrez de Tapia

3). Diego Villaseñor alcaide de Segovía married to Maria Serones (Seron)(Seronis)

4). Juan Villaseñor Serones and Elvira de Tovar y Enriquez de Castilla

5). Diego de Villaseñor-Tovar and Isabel Alfonso de Villaseñor

6). Diego Villaseñor-Tovar"de Burgos" (b.1442 and d.1520) and Guiomar de Orosco y Sandoval

7). Juan de Villaseñor-Tovar y Orosco (b.1500) and Catalina Cervantes y Lara de Andrada

----------------------

*8). Diego de Villaseñor-Tovar Orosco (bap 15/Apr/1543 and d.1610) y Cervantes and Jeronima d' Avalos y Gomez (m. abt. 1568)

----------------------

9). Gonzalo de Avalos Tovar de Villaseñor and Antonia Hurtado de Mendoza

10) Gonzalo de Villaseñor Cervantes (b. Abt 1621) (m. 26/Sept/1650) and Juana Gomez de Espejo

11). Gonzalo Villaseñor Y Gomez (b. Abt 1660) ( buried 6/Aug/1733) and Teresa de Alva Bocanegra (m. March 1683, Aguascalientes)

12) Cristóbal Villaseñor y Alva ( bap. 7/Sept/1688 Aguascalientes) and Gertrudis Franco de Paredes.

Note: Cristobal had multiple marriages.he was also married to Maria Perez Luxan (Lujan). He may also have been married to Gertrudis Olmedo but I have not confirmed this. If he was married to Gertrudis Olmedo then she would have been the first marriage, with Juana Gertrudis Franco de Paredes the second, and Maria Perez de Luxan (Lujan) being the third marriage.

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Second possible line:

1). Alfonso Fernandez Villaseñor and Elvira Osórez (daughter of Fernando Osórez maestro de Santiago)

2). Fernan A. Villaseñor and Aldonza Gutierrez de Tapia

3). Diego Villaseñor alcaide de Segovía married to Maria Serones (Seron)(Seronis)

4). Juan Villaseñor Serones and Elvira de Tovar y Enriquez de Castilla

5). Diego de Villaseñor-Tovar and Isabel Alfonso de Villaseñor

6). Diego Villaseñor-Tovar"de Burgos" (b.1442 and d.1520) and Guiomar de Orosco y Sandoval

7). Juan de Villaseñor-Tovar y Orosco (b.1500) and Catalina Cervantes y Lara de Andrada

8) Juan de Villaseñor Cervantes and Catalina Gonzales Corona (Catalina Corona)

*9). Gonzalo de Villaseñor (b abt 1540) y Cervantes and Maria Zuniga

*10) Gonzalo de Villaseñor Orosco y Zuñiga and Aldonsa de Avalos e Hijar

------------------

11) Gonzalo de Avalos Tovar de Villaseñor and Antonia Hurtado de Mendoza

12). Gonzalo de Villaseñor Cervantes (b. Abt 1621) (m. 26/Sept/1650) and Juana Gomez de Espejo

13) Gonzalo Villaseñor Y Gomez (b. Abt 1660) ( buried 6/Aug/1733) and Teresa de Alva Bocanegra (m. March 1683, Aguascalientes)

14). Cristóbal Villaseñor y Alva ( bap. 7/Sept/1688 Aguascalientes) and" Gertrudis Franco de Paredes. Cristobal had multiple marriages.

Villaseñor D'Avalos and Villaseñor Lomelin connection
Submitted by R.A.Ricci on Fri, 2016-07-08 22:42.
Your welcome Manny and Chris,
I was trying to be helpful without any serious thought that I would be adding or changing information in my tree. It seems that I am being rewarded for helping out. There may be a change in my Villaseñor Lomelin line because of this research.

I have been digging deeper into the Villaseñor and D'Avalos connection. I found some interesting information on the Villaseñor family. This is from a secondary source but the author provides primary sources that I need to go back and check. There is a big implication for my family tree if this information is correct.

I had been researching the Villaseñor and Avalos connection without being a descendant of the Avalos line. I descend from the Villaseñor Lomelin family. In my research of the Avalos and Villaseñor I found that The web of the Avalos and Villaseñor is providing new information that is a little different than some of the information on the Villaseñor that we have taken for granted because genealogists from a long time ago had stated that so and so was the daughter of "Fulano". If this new information is correct, then my ancestor is not the great granddaughter of Luis (Luciano) Lomelin(i) and Maria del Olmo. This new information adds another generation so she is a great great granddaughter of Luis (Luciano) Lomelin(i) and Maria del Olmo. It also adds another generation in my Villaseñor line. I need time to look up all the primary sources to see if this is true. This is going to take some time. It may also ruffle some feathers because two prominent genealogists have different information in their books that many people, myself included, had taken as fact.

If this new information is true then I descend from a second wife of a Villaseñor after his first wife D'Avalos dies, and I am even more closely related to the D'Avalos Villaseñors. Like you said, there is a lot of information to be processed. One D'Avalos and Villaseñor line intermarried for four generations before finally marrying outside of the family.

R.A.Ricci

I am also descended from Toribio and Gertrudis. You would be my cousin albeit a distant one so nice to meet you. I have read many of your post on nuestro ranchos so some of your info has been helpful for me. The only fact that I know getrudis existed was a that I found a death record with just her first name and stating cristobal villasenor was her husband in aguascalientes.

I was going through my notes, and came upon the following entries, which I wish to contribute to this thread. These I pulled from the Archdiocese of Michoacan rolls, I hope you can find them useful.

Dear Manny,

The main reason that I never finish writing a book is that new information keeps popping up. I often am working on some specific research when I come across some information that is an important puzzle piece to a different research project. Although you provided this information as a possible help in the research on Cristobal Villaseñor, the pieces you are providing are helping me with two other research projects.

The information you are providing looks like it will help me in my Villaseñor Cueva Lomelin line. The second line of research that your information is helpful is in my research on my de Hijar lines.

What does the HaLa mean in "HaLa Francisco Villasenor cc Ynes Nunez del Rincon"?

Thank you for all your help,
Rick A. Ricci

Comment

Hi Rick,

I'm happy to hear it helps. I'm sorry, I cut & pasted from my notes, and I have some personal abbreviations: "HaLa" is for "hija legitima," and "HL" would be "hijo legitimo." Others I use are "DTO" id "difunto"; "tt" is "testigos"; "pp" is "padrinos"; "Ldo" is "licenciado"; "Ber" is "bachiller."

These surnames are on my radar, and I will continue to log them, as I find them.

Saludos!

Dear Danny,

It does not. The dispensas provides information in a different area of the Villaseñor family puzzle.

Dear Manny,

The information provided on Francisco de Villasenor y Lomelin Bernal is important in my research. He was a possible ancestor but if he is a priest then he cannot be the one Francisco de Villasenor that I find married and having children.

Thanks,

Rick A. Ricci

In reply to by dcalonso

Comment

Dear Danny,

This Villaseñor line that Regina descends from is related to a Villaseñor D' Avalos line.
Jose de Villaseñor Figueroa was married twice . Through his first marriage to Maria Delgadilla y Bocanegra D'avalos you have a line of descent that used Villaseñor D'avalos. Regina Ines Villaseñor descends from the second marriage so she doesn't have D'avalos in her ancestry.

Thanks,
Rick A. Ricci

Comment

Dear Manny,

One of my ancestors is Regina Ines Villaseñor y Cuebas. Her parents are in dispute. Some genealogists claim that she descends from the Francisco Villaseñor in your post. But based on all the information that I have at hand, I had constructed a different ancestry for her. Your post actually supports my work and clears up this mess as the alternate line is not valid unless that Francisco had a marriage before or after he became a priest.

The probability that this line that I had posted here on nuestrosranchos is valid just went up by leaps and bounds..

I have already connected another line of mine to the Viilaseñors but it was through the brother so it did not include the Cervantes. Regina descends from the Villaseñor Cervantes line, but the ancestry with Francisco didn't make sense to me given the information that I possessed as it led me to construct this alternate line. This line does show descent from the Villaseñor Cervantes line which is very important as I have continued the ancestry of the Cervantes to two thousand years through one line and through an Italian line well over one thousand years. These lines of descent are very solid as they are two lines with much history and are families with written records that can be checked.

Dear Manny,

One thank you wasn't enough. The data you provided seems like just a little piece of the puzzle but in reality it is a big piece as it reinforces that the descent that other genealogists have proposed is not true and that this is the line of descent that fits with all of the information that I have.

Some of my information is based on some of Mariano Gonzalez Leal's work. I am relying on Mariano Gonzalez Leal's for a couple of generations and added it to other pieces of the puzzle that I already have.

Hola Richard:

México, Aguascalientes, registros parroquiales, 1620-1962, database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N87P-B2K : 27 July 2015), Christobal Villaseñor in entry for Gertrudis, ; citing Death, Asunción de María, Aguascalientes, Aguascalientes, Mexico, parroquias Católicas, Aguascalientes (Catholic church parishes, Aguascalientes).

Gracias,
Ricardo

I have had a couple of interactions with this user over the last two years, both around my 5th great-grandfather, Pedro de los Reyes and his son, Vicente Irineo Reyes, and grandson Jose Eustaquio Reyes. I'd spent a ton of time compiling records and putting this family together, tying in original sources (before they had them indexed, even), and making sure that everyone was documented. In the course of one day, this user destroyed all of that work and took everyone apart as family.

Then when confronted about it, and clearly showing that the changes were made by them, they denied it and claimed it was others ruining their work. Whoever the person has said to me on more than one occasion that they live in California. They have also asked, more than once, if I am a member of the LDS church, which makes me feel almost certain that they are a church member. In one of our exchanges, she referred to a user "Nuestro Ranchos" that was making changes and stated her opinion that this was a company based out of Anaheim. The biggest thing that I've noticed is that they are very protective of their "work" because they will place notes in the bios of people telling others not to touch and to "RESPECT" their ancestors. Meanwhile, I'm asking for her to provide proof of what she has, but to no avail.

Comment

Thank you for pointing this out. I have seen Mbarrena many times. She also wrote to me once, she said she was from California, I think and her name was Maria. That's all she would give me, when I asked her who her parents were etc, she just did not want to tell me. Thank you

Hi Elma,

I wouldn't believe anything this person says, today I restore the information of 23 people in the FamilyTree, all messed up by "mbarrena" and find out that "AlejandraRizo1" does exactly the same, thus likely another "mbarrena"'s persona.

Also is distasteful that this person only goes after people she/he think were spaniards leaving untouched those who were indigenous, black or any other caste, and try to create (fictitiously) links with "kings" and other nobility names. which only demonstrates her/his supremacist poor mind.

Family Search hasn't done any thing about it, plenty of reports haven't ever made a change, I still reporting this person and encourage anyone else to do so, maybe one day the administrators will understand how useless that page is turning due to people like this.

Thank you for the comment Elma, goes to show how many people's work this person has affected.

Comment

Thanks for the alert about this. I find that I am relying on the FamilySearch trees less and less as I find more and more cases of inaccuracy.

FamilySearch allowed someone to change my step-father's record to show he had died when in fact he was still alive. While FamilySearch allowed that person to make this change without any oversight, they made me jump through hoops to verify that he was still alive so that I could change his record back to reality.

If I do look at FamilySearch, I accept nothing at all without verifying it on my own. And I see many cases of errors. I keep my master trees on Ancestry and allow no one else to modify it. I document all of the core persons' information, including writing research notes where the documents leave questions or are in conflict. The people at the periphery of my tree may be in various states of reliability, but people seeing my tree can count on solid ground for my core people. FamilySearch trees have no real way to prevent corruption, either intentional or not.

Comment

Sadly that's very true.

Reality is that we all do make errors at some point, but these people I've mention do not made those errors, they purposely and with malice had change the information, thus I feel it is important not to let this folks "bury" again the information that we have found with many years of research and collaboration.

Comment

I work a lot on family search and have noticed exactly that and it is a shame that people just mess around with records. Some are probably not made on purpose but out of different considerations, but some are clearly made on purpose. I think that is the price to pay in family search because it is an open, collaborative genealogical website and that is great to make conecctions with other results and trees. I try to watch my relevant trees and every once in a while I have to make corrections in both cases (trolls and innacurate modifications) Since I have no proof of trolls I haven't keep their names. What I do is to keep my tree in geneanet https://en.geneanet.org/ which in my opinion is a great site because there are some profesionals that keep their work open to consult but not to modify. Family tree is very important to consult their microfilms.

Comment

Totally agree, Family Search (their films) is definitely one of the best sources of information in the net, FamilyTree in the other hand had been lacking from the get go. I should check Geneanet.org, sounds like another option. Thanks for mentioning it.

Comment

I had a familySearch account it seemed people where always changing my info so I just erased my whole profile I always had to go back and correct it. People are better researchers and respectful here on nuestrosranchos.

First off, thanks Joseph for posting link to this Padron which has loads of valuable information. I came across this Padron years ago and forgot about it.

Looking through it, I had a question about other terms from this page (803)(https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSDG-4SGV?i=802&cat=68…)

"Chuiquitero" is it a worker who makes chiquihuites or hand woven baskets?

I recognize the other terms like "petatero" person who makes petates, labrador, etc... but never came across "chiquitero"

Also, at the top of page, what do they mean by "hijos tributarios"? Is this like volunteer work for the church in lieu of something?

Comment

In my understanding Cas° means "casado" and Suh means "Su hijo" and Sumuj "Su mujer" then others means Su hermana, Su criada, su sirviente, su esclava etc... and then yes and clearly: "su cajero" but it is hard to guess what it actually means, probably there is business in the house and they take care of the accounts or something like that.

Comment

1) cajero = merchant clerk

I get this from #12: https://bit.ly/2Y1hVyv

2) I agree with Esther -- what looks like "Fixuto or Fixoto or Sixoto" is sirv.ta, an abbreviation for sirvienta, a female servant. Riestra and Naredo are surnames I'm familiar with -- both have existed in Tlaltenango, for example. It's an N, because you can compare the way the letter is written to other H's and N's in the record. If you look at Nuñez and Herrera on the same page, you'll notice a subtle difference: with H's, there is a horizontal straight line through the middle of the letter. With N's, there is bow/curve and you can tell the pen was never lifted from the paper. Also, the same surname was written with a fairly legible "n" in the lower case.

Comment

Hi Joseph,

For the one that you can't make out at the bottom, "Fixuto or Fixoto or Sixoto", I think it might be Sirvta (sirvieta). It's only on the female names and they do not have a last name. Just a thought.

Thank you,
Esther

Geneology How accurate are they?

I have recently done a genealogy test, where I sent some swabs with saliva via mail, and I received results that were a bit surprising. Well, very surprising to me, as a matter of fact.

Comments

Comment

My understanding is that DNA test are very accurate, but one thing is the test and a completely different thing is the attribution of it to specific ethnicities and as has been said this is very estimative and not highly accurate because it depends on samples in data bases that may or may not be accurate and if there is not big differences in tests from one company to another, the interpretations are very fussy. That been said, the ethnicity attribution is just indicative and a good one. On the particular thing about andean native, probably there are similarities between north and southamerica, similarities that are evident. Also, exchanges between Mexico and Peru in colonial times were rather intense and the route between Acapulco and Callao was well trodden.

Comment

Hi Cruzmeza,
I dont know which company you used for your DNA test. I made my DNA test with MyHeritage, my wife who is French and our grand-son did it also and the results are very logical.
I dont understand how you can have 12 percent Peruvian, unless the database used by your provider found that in Peru there are some people with the same genome as you which is a wrong way to determine your ancestry.
Normally less that 5 percent can be erroneous but 12 percent is strange.
Historically, the Peruvian conquest was organized from the Pacific coast of Mexico (I have some ancestors who died in Peru) but I dont have any information of bringing people from Peru to Mexico.
Regards.
Jorge

Comment

DNA is as accurate as the availability of samples in existence, is still at some degree in its infancy, thus I wouldn't keep thinking around the results too much if they seem off. In an interview I heard on npr a while ago mentioned how inaccurate was when applied to genealogy, a lot of Hispanic, Asians and other non white groups kept getting European, and the reason was because those were the only samples they had, at some point many ethical groups will relate, but we are talking in the thousands of years.

If that specific place where you got tested doesn't had closer samples to compare with your DNA it will give you the closest possible even if in terms of genealogy, isn't really that close. Is obvious that all indigenous groups of the American continent will share DNA that comes from the days of the "Beringia" settlements, then it might be that is just the indigenous DNA of the Nueva Galicia area that happen to be similar to the Peruvian.

A acquaintance got some tests years ago, in one place got Asian, and in other got Hispanic, the only thing that changed was the last name used, this person is from the Philippines, thus even with samples, the companies simply assumed that those belonged to either or, when in fact was likely both. I don't know the details though, but again, don't stress too much for it, records finding still the most rewarding part genealogy. :)

In reply to by RJQ

Comment

RJQ, hat would make sense. I guess we still have ways to go in genetic history research. My thought about these results was that perhaps some Peruvians came to Mexico in the Nueva España time to work in mines or something like that, and obviously there were mines in Zacatecas.
So who knows? Records are the most accurate way to know for sure so far to know where our roots extend. The search shall continue.

Comment

Hello. My AncestryDNA results indicate 1% ethnicity estimate to Indigenous Americas—Bolivia & Perú. I really didn't expect that, but being that our early ancestors on this side of the globe traveled a lot, it kinda made sense.

Regarding not finding any indicators of strictly "Peruvian" descent, I suspect the Spanish authorities during the Viceroyalty of Nueva Granada, as from Nueva Galicia, wouldn't categorize native Americans based on their location, but rather generalized them as you've indicated.

Please keep in mind that this is my theory. I'm not a professional genealogist, but I'm sure someone on this forum can enlight us both.

More research needs to be done to find each link.

There is more information on M. Carmen Alonso:

Carmen Alonso is the daughter of Antonio Alonzo and Josefa Alonso

Antonio Alonso is the son of juan Alonso de los Hinojos and Veronica Lopez Castañeda

Juan Alonso de los Hinojos is the son of Capitan Pedro de los Hinojos and Ana Diaz de Medel D.

Capitan Pedro Alonso de los Hinojos

Pedro Alonso de Hinijosos had multiple marriages. The parents of M. del Carmen Alonso are related, both descending from Pedro Alonso De Hinojoso.

Through Josefa there is also a Diaz de Leon and Sotomayor ancestry.

It seems that Maria Del Carmen (del Carmel) Alonso also used the surname “de ESPARZA.”
Happy Halloween,
