Reading poor family search images

When an image is difficult to read,
try clicking on the invert button on
the tool bar. The background becomes
dark and the letters white, sometimes
making the words much easier to decipher.

Another suggestion: save the image, then try adjusting the contrast and/or the brightness with picture viewing software.

Some software will have an "auto-fix" feature which tries to optimize the image. This may be the best place to start.

I just finished watching an interview by Connie Martinson of Victor Villasenor (she kept calling him Victor Villasena and he never corrected her) on his website victorvillasenor.com and I wonder if those who saw him speak recently can say if what he said in this video is what they heard.

The interview is in two parts, each 14 minutes each, and I got quite an insight into Victor's views, like Carlos Castaneda, very spiritual, focusing on the spirituality of his indigenous side, his connection to the spirit world, etc. He had trouble with his publishers insisting his were works of fiction because of this; his tales sometimes sound too fantastic.

I wonder what others who have heard him speak came away with.

Victor Villasenor

Did anyone attend the talk given by Victor Villasenor on Sept 18 at the Fullerton Public Library? If so, could you post your comments. Thanks.

Mr. Villasenor opened his lecture by welcoming the standing only crowd to come forward and sit on the floor in the front and sides of the room in order to better enjoy the presentation. The perfect host, he engaged attendees with questions on attitudes about world peace. Some were optimistic, but many like me, were unsure.

Ten years ago, as a novice genealogist, some wise person suggested I read his books to understand family history, which is the context of genealogy. I have only read two of his books, “Rain of Gold”, and Thirteen Senses”, which chronicles his family’s journey from Mexico to Orange County California in the early 1900’s, and was not only inspired but motivated to look for “the story” and not just names and dates.

Victor Villasenor is not only a best selling author, but he is an amazing storyteller and motivational speaker. Relating his family history using quotes and pictures from several of his books he set the context of his family’s migration from Mexico to southern California. He emphasized the strength of Mexican women noting their ability to be grateful and compassionate in the worst of situations. His lecture centered on the arrogance of advocates of English only, noting that language promotes understanding. He started school speaking only Spanish and the prejudice of the majority of his teachers embittered him and he became hateful. It was through the encouragement of a substitute teacher that he found his voice in writing and determined that he would encourage others disparaged in an English only society.

After several hundred rejection letters he published his first book in paperback, but due to the miscue on the part of another author he was the keynote speaker at a teachers conference and his book and presentation were widely reviewed in southern California. Now a successful author he encouraged those in attendance to find their voice, find their family, and be optimistic about the future and world peace.

Renee,

Thank you for your comments. I just sent a post to Research at NR wondering what someone who has attended his lectures came away with.

His website victorvillasenor.com has a two-part interview (14 minutes each) done by Connie Martinson (who kept calling him Victor Villasena and he never corrected her). I got quite an insight into Victor's ideology, his spirituality, the tales he says are true, but publishers considered fiction since most Americans don't understand the spirituality of Native peoples (he dotes on his indigenous side).

He says that the world is entering another feminine cycle of peace and love, and that women are the center of it; however, in one of the other videos he speaks of how he and his wife had to separate (I assume they are divorced), that she thought he was insane, but that he just had to go his own way. Kind of contradictory on his part. Still, he zeroes in on what it is like to be poor in Mexico and a minority in the US, and I haven't found that anywhere else. He is not a hard core activist, which makes him more acceptable.

I believe that it means from Spain, a general term rather than specifying a specific region but I could be wrong. I have seen this before and I assumed that it meant from Spain.

Thank you Stewart,

I guess my family was normal for those times. From my 7th generation
forward I find a lot of same names, like Antonio, Francisco and Francisca in
the same family, Jesus for male and female, Felipe, etc. and since there
were so many in each family, there are many of the same same but with
different father & mother. Also kind of weird to me because it involves me
is that my mother named me Maria Graciela in the civil registration but my
grandmother thought I should have a Christian name, Esther, so in my
baptismal record that is the only name I have Esther. I decided to retain
this name to honor my grandmother who was very special to me.

I am assuming that there is no identifying info so that you could return
these tapes to the family. What about your local historical society? Or if
you live near a univerisity, contacting the history dept. there? I see
online that there is something called the Oral History Association, link :
http://www.oralhistory.org/. Maybe they can suggest something. It is sad,
and I can understand and admire your sense of obligation to not let this
woman's words be lost. Good luck.

I wouldn't give it to the family, who might not be interested and just throw the tape away again.

The best place would be the genealogical society or historical museum in San Pedro or a University's special collections. That is where I found tapes in New Mexico of my mothers cousins who are all long gone, and I am the only one who seems interested in copies of the tapes.

Alice,

After I downloaded Firefox, I was able to use their new Viewer, and I thought that since Firefox forced me to upgrade my Adobe Flash before it would download, I thought that perhaps that was all that was needed and not a new browser. So, I went back to IE8 and tried to access the new Viewer there, but I still had the same old problems. What other older browser do you have on your computer?

Now that I have the Firefox, I am experiencing strange problems such as the original old MSN Explorer 6 (for dial-up) launching itself in the middle of what I am doing. So now I have three browsers on my computer, and they conflict.

Armando sent me a link to something on Mozilla that hopefully will lead me to correct the problem.

Emily,

The link I sent you will definitely help your problem in two ways. The old
MSN Explorer 6 is launching because that is what you have set in Windows XP.
The link explains how to fix that.
Windows XP

1. Click the Start button, then click on the Control Panel icon to open
the Windows Control Panel.
2. Click the *Add or Remove Programs* icon to open the Add or Remove
Programs applet.
3. On the left side of the Window click the *Set Program Access and
Defaults* icon.
4. In the Access and Defaults window, click on the *Custom* radio button
to expand the Custom category.
5. Underneath *Choose a default e-mail program*, click the radio button
next to the program you want to use (e.g. Thunderbird, Windows Live Mail,
Outlook).
6. Click OK at the bottom of the window.

The Adobe Flash update for Firefox is different than the one for IE. That is
probably why you couldn't use IE still.

You don't have conflicts with the browsers, you have settings that need to
be corrected that anybody that migrates to Firefox from the setup you have
has to do.

Armando,

I think I successfully reset the browser that launches. I haven't had the old MSN Explorer 6 launch itself for several hours now.

Thanks so much for your guidance,

Emilie,
What I'm saying is that the familysearch site has apparently been tweeked and now works accessing it the way I had always done before. I don't have to use the Firefox download I did yesterday. Have you tried accessing it the way you used to? Good luck. Alice

Alice,

I will try again, but earlier today I wasn't able to use the new Viewer with the IE8 like before.

I sure hope they continue tweaking; the best thing would be to tweak it right back to what it was. I hear that some Family History Centers can't use the new viewer themselves because of their old computers.

Annual San Jose Viva Fest and Mariachi Festival

Dear Members of Nuestros Ranchos,

See the link for the announcement for the annual San Jose Mariachi Festival. http://vivafest.org/

Every year is more exciting than the next.

This sounds really cool! I wish I could make it.

As a founding member of Mariachi Cardenal de Stanford in 1995 I hope my alma
mater makes a presence. I haven’t kept up with the college mariachi scene in
many years, but good luck to Mariachi Cardenal de Stanford if they
participate.

This email reminded me of my favorite T-shirt which said the following:

Harvard, because not everyone can get into Stanford. Ha ha, let’s go
Mariachi Cardenal!

Primo Juan Aguayo,

I see that the Mariachi Cardenal is still alive and well at Stanford. Here's the link to their website. Too bad you can't make it to the festival but who knows, they may repeat the Mariachi College Bowl next year.

Saludos de San Jose!

Joseph de Anda y Nicolasa Maria Moreno

Sigo con la investigación de los Moreno.

Hola José,

Se encuentra ese matrimonio en la imagen 380
https://www.familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18684-24787-44?cc=187459…

Yes, I did have that info as well as the fact that Juan Moreno de Ortega es
hijo de Alonso Moreno de Ortega y Josefa Villegas. Thank you for posting
anyway in case I didn't have it. What I don't have is a document showing the
parents of Joseph de Anda y Nicolasa Maria Moreno casados el 28 de abril de
1675
https://www.familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18684-24787-44?cc=187459…
theory is that Joseph de Anda is the brother of Beatriz Vásquez
Zermeño
de Anda and that Nicolasa Maria Moreno is the sister of Juan Moreno de
Ortega Villegas. Do you have anything that proves these connections? If we
can find the dispensa it should show how they are all related.

Estimado Armando,

I'm still trying to firgure out how the the Villegas were related to Hernan Cortes. Since Cortes was from Extremadura, the Jimenez-Altamirano is the key. I have noticed all Altamirano in that region are related somehow. It would be interesting to find that link between the Altamirano.

Alice,

Yes, those are the exact problems I am having. I have to try over and over again to get the list of records within a parroquia to stand still---that bar keeps sliding back to the left. You explained it perfectly. Also, I had to change the zoom on my screen from 100% to 75% in order to see the right side of their image screen to where the Save, Print, and the two left/right arrows are.

I don't see the feedback tab at the right of the page to report a problem. Thanks, Alice Blake

Emilie,
I'm also not AT ALL computer savvy, but was able to install Firefox myself with my XP. It solves the Familysearch problem, but it created a different "situation" for me. I have no idea how to move all my info including mail from my usual Yahoo homepage, so I will have to use the Firefox desktop icon exclusively for researching on Familysearch. So far I don't see any problem with doing that; I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Alice

Alice,

You read my mind! I too just now downloaded Firefox, but I think all I had needed to do was to update my Adobe Flash Player because a screen came up after the download that said Firefox wouldn't work with the outdated Flash Player I had. (I wondered why that Flash Player screen would come up sometimes inviting me to update it). I don't know what it does, but it made Firefox work. I also got another screen that said that some file (?) was corrupted.

I chose the option to pull over my Favorites (Bookmarks in Foxfire), but they are not there. So for the time being I will do like you do and use the IE8 browser for my favorites except Family Search.

I also am now seeing the photo files that I saved appear on the desktop and not among my list of My Pictures or My Photos. Maybe someone can tell me why that is. I save lots of photos and attachment files and I don't want them cluttering up my screen saver screen.

I haven't yet tried to bring Family Search up with Firefox. Wish me luck!

Emily,

It's not that Firefox won't work without a Flash Player update, It's the
websites that use the Flash Player that won't work without an update such as
the Family Search viewer. It looks like an oudated Flash Player the cause of
your problem with IE after all. You can update the IE version for the Adobe
Flash Player at get.adobe.com/flashplayer.

As far as the Favorites imported from IE into Firefox, they are under a
folder called* **From Internet Explorer located under bookmarks*.

Armando,

I followed the instructions you sent re how to import my Favorites from IE8, and it worked. Thank you so much.

I have more questions:

I tried downloading the Adobe update to the IE8 but it didn't help with the Family Search site there, I have to use Firefox to use the Family Search Viewer. The reason I updated my Adobe Flash Player was that Firefox had stopped loading and brought up a screen that said I had to first update Adobe before I could proceed with the download of the Firefox browser. So, I don't think that just updating Adobe Viewer would help me with the IE8.

I like Firefox now, except for one thing. How do you re-size the screen from 100% to 75% so I can see the Save, Print, and the <- -> arrows to go from one page to another? Those are out of sight to the right of the screen. That part of the top bar menu can't be seen on Family Search on Firefox, only on IE.

On the IE8 browser there is a place on the bottom right corner where you can re-size the screen and I don't see that on Firefox.

Oh, also, on the new Family Search viewer, it will only print the whole page, where before we could print out just a specific portion. George says he saves the whole image then crops it, but that sounds so complicated. I had to use my scanner to enlarge the portion of the page I printed. I am going to contact Feedback and ask about that.

Thank you so much for your help.

The download must have been interrupted to ensure you don't install a Flash
Player with a security flaw.
http://krebsonsecurity.com/2011/03/critical-security-updates-for-adobe-…

You can resize webpages by holding down the CTRL button and moving the mouse
wheel or holding down the CTRL button and pressing + or - on the number pad
of the keyboard. Each website you do this for will retain the zoom level you
choose for future visits. There is also a way to add zoom controls to the
Firefox toolbar.
https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/how-do-i-customize-toolbars?redire…

For some reason I never noticed we could previously save a portion of an
image. I would always download the whole image then crop it with Windows
Paint.

Armando,

What a treasure you are! It worked, the CTRL with the - .

Alice--- Try the above to re-size the window and you can see the Save, Print, and the forward and backward arrows. Hoo-ray!

Armando----You didn't know about the printing of just a portion? When I used to click on Print it gave you the option to select just a portion --- you would move the sides and top of the image and isolate what you wanted within yellow lines then it would print just that. It was wonderful. It made the copy so big and clear, unless the microfilming was really bad, then you couldn't do anything about that except to ask Family Search in Salt Lake to find a better microfilmed image. I sure hope they fix that. Ancestry.com still has that option where you can print a whole census page or "Current View" when you enlarge it on their screen.

I see what you are doing. You aren't actually saving a portion you are
printing a portion. I never print images, I always save them, except for the
instance where I am going to send some to an uncle by mail to see if he can
help me with a few missing relatives.

Comment

Armando,

I never tried saving just the portion I isolated, but maybe there was a Save function for it, I don't remember now.

My goodness, you save them? In your computer or to another device? I don't save anything, I print it out because I can retrieve it faster than searching for it in the computer, and I am afraid someone would steal my computer. No one is going to steal my 75 binders (one for each line), but then the house could catch fire and I would lose them. Well, whichever way, the repository is always online now so we would just have to find the images all over again.

I had another problem with Firefox. I tried to e-mail a record link to a cousin in Texas, and I couldn't do it because when I am on Firefox the e-mail defaulted to a really old MSN Explorer browser (the one with the butterfly) that is still in my computer from when I had just dial-up. I will have to call MSN and see if they can tell me how to keep that old thing from launching itself. Why it launched that and not IE8 is a mystery. What I am doing now is just going back to the IE8 browser to use that e-mail system.

Thanks for everything,

Emillie

Comment

I save them to the computer under a folder that has the same name as the
surname of the family. I name the files with the names of people in the
record. This make for finding the records easy. You can also use the search
function to find the files this way. I you buy a small fireproof case and do
a weekly backup of everything to an external harddrive or USB drive and put
the drive into the case everytime you are done backing up then you won't
have to worry about a fire damaging it. If you save the drive in a sealed
plastic bag it will also be safe from water damage due to a flood. You
should already be doing this for small valuables and important documents you
never want to lose in a natural disaster.

As far as email you need to change the email client setting in Firefox to
use Use and choose Hotmail if it's in there.

Comment

Armando,

If only I was one tenth as computer literate as you! I did buy an external drive and a small "thumb" drive, but when I tried to install them, they messed up my computer so badly that I just uninstalled them. We do have a box at the bank for documents.

I went to Best Buy where I bought the drives and asked them to help me but they got too impatient. They had a home service, but they wanted $100 just for coming out to start.

Thanks again for your suggestions, and I will go to that link and see if I can manage to change the e-mail client setting in Firefox.

Emilie
