Tracing beyond Mexico to Spain

Sherri,
My people lived in the Los Altos region of Jalisco. I was able to move several lines back to Spain. A NR member recommended Retoños, the series of books by Mariano Gonzales-Leal. Check WorldCat to see the list of libraries with the set. My grandfather was in the books. His line went back to 1475 in Spain.
Good luck! Lucy

Thanks, Lucy. Ill check it out. I saw that there are 9 volumes. Is it easy to find names? Are names indexed?

Comment

Hi Sherri,
The first volume gives an overview of regions, last names covered in the rest of the volumes and some other important info. It’s sort of an index with supplemental info. Good luck. Maven

I am hoping someone can assist me in locating the mg record of this couple
who married on 3 Jan 1655 in Mexticacan. The record should be on or about
image 80 in roll #226724, Nochistlan mat.

This is the pre marriage document for Joseph Domingo Diaz to wed Maria Francisca Josefa Gonzalez dated August 1st 1767

Joseph Domingo Diaz was spanish, originally from the jurisdiction of Aguascalientes and currently living in Teocaltiche, legitimate son of Santiago Diaz and Juana de Villalobos. Juana was dead in 1767. Joseph Domingo Diaz was 40 years old in 1767 and was not previously married.

Maria Francisca Josefa Gonzalez was spanish, originally from and living in Aguascalientes, natural daughter of Maria Antonia Gonzalez. Maria Francisca Josefa was 14 years old in 1767 (not a typo!)

Comment

The reason you are not finding much on the parents is probably because not all of the Teocaltiche records are indexed. I say Teocaltiche because it looks like Santiago and Juana had a daughter born there in 1713.

https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/294041?availability=Family%…

Only ones with a magnifying glass are text searchable. Also the marriage records from the expected marriage period look like they are missing in Teocaltiche. You may find other baptised children in the unindexed records.

Comment

The record also mentions "Estancia de Villalobos ". So try to research the Villalobos family that owned this Estancia. Another clue may be found in a document after this one that has Diego Villalobos as a witness.

Hola Daniel

Years ago I did some research about the Barragan lastname and here are some of the notes I have :

on april 1666 en Parral, José Barragán español, natural from Zamora in New Spain married Doña María de Astorga Robledo

Just curious if your Diaz line extends to Durango. My mothers family is from Presidios/Tepehuanes and I often wonder if I might someday trace back to Zacatecas, where my fathers family is from.

You can check to see if any of the Diaz in your line migrated from Teocaltiche, Jalisco Mexico to Durango.

When I was researching my Diaz de Leon ancestry from Los Altos de Jalisco I discovered that one of the lines had left Zacatecas and traveled to Durango The line was originally from Aguascalientes. This line that went to Durango branched off and left some descendants there as others moved back to Zacatecas. One of the things that I remember about this line was that I had trouble putting it together until I found a document that explained that five children had been born before the parents legally married. It turned out that I didn’t descend from this line.

There are two couples by this name in Theocaltiche in the 1700's. One of them was baptizing their children in the very early 1700's and the other in the mid 1750's. You would have to provide more information in order to know which couple is the one you are researching.

Diego and Santiago are cognates. In the 1600's and 1700's, some families used the names interchangeably for the same person. In other families, the two names were never used interchangeably. This next record should be studied to see if it can provide more information into your research of the earlier Santiago Diaz and Juana de Villalobos.

Finding Pedro De Torres y Sarmiento

Hi everyone

Somebody have any details about Pedro De Torres y Sarmiento (c.1685) and his wife Lorenza de Borja y Gaitan(c.1690)?

They had at least tree sons and two daughters

Comments

Comment

Hi Enrique,

I am also related to this couple via my Valencia and Oceguera ancestors and as part of the indexing work that I'm doing in the Archivo del Antiguo Obispado de Michoacan... I turned up a dispensa that provides LOTS of details about Pedro de Torres Guerrero y Sarmiento Palomino, although there's not much information on his wife Lorenza.

Here's the link to the dispensa for a son of Pedro, Alejandro de Torres Guerrero y Gaytan (Originario de Tamazula), and his marriage to Rosa Maria de Cervantes (Originaria de Cotija):

  • In the dispensa we learn that the novios are related on the Torres side. Piecing together the tree, with the help of other dispensas, the tree looks like this:

    Por parte del novio:

    • Tronco: Juan de Torres Guerrero cc Ana de Sarmiento Palomino
    • Primer Grado: Jose de Torres Guerrero y Sarmiento cc Josefa de Andrada y Oceguera
    • Segundo Grado: Pedro de Torres Guerrero y Sarmiento cc Lorenza de Borja y Gaytan
    • Novio: Alejandro de Torres Guerrero y Gaytan

    Por parte de la novia:

    • Tronco: Juan de Torres Guerrero cc Ana de Sarmiento Palomino
    • Primer Grado: Sebastian de Torres Guerrero y Sarmiento cc Ines de Suarez y Oceguera
    • Segundo Grado: Andrea de Torres y Suarez cc Leonel de Cervantes
    • Tercer Grado: Leonel de Cervantes y Torres cc Nicolasa de Vargas Machuca y Oceguera
    • Novia: Rosa Maria de Cervantes

In the dispensa we learn about a second parentesco which is the following:

    Por parte del novio:

    • Tronco: Diego de Oceguera Coronado cc Ana Vasquez Manzo
    • Primer Grado: Alvaro Rodriguez de Andrada cc Mariana de Oceguera y Manzo
    • Segundo Grado: Jose de Torres Guerrero y Sarmiento cc Josefa de Andrada y Oceguera
    • Tercer Grado: Pedro de Torres Guerrero y Sarmiento cc Lorenza de Borja y Gaytan
    • Novio: Alejandro de Torres Guerrero y Gaytan

    Por parte de la novia:

    • Tronco: Diego de Oceguera Coronado cc Ana Vasquez Manzo
    • Primer Grado: Diego de Oceguera Coronado y Manzo cc Juana de Loera Manzanedo
    • Segundo Grado: Maria de Oceguera y Loera cc Miguel de Vargas Machuca
    • Tercer Grado: Nicolasa de Vargas Machuca y Oceguera cc Leonel de Cervantes

Hola.

    Hi Sergio

    More testamentos!

A few years ago i tried to see testamentos of Aguascalientes through the Acervo Digital del Archivo Historico and I alway got an error message when i tried to view the docs. But yesterday i tried the link again and the "ver documento" button works. I still have a problem using the search form, so I have to use the "back door", just browse through the list which I can access through the link.

This is probably not news for anyone else, but for me it's a big break. It's a window on life in the 1600's and 1700's - dotas, selling of slaves (and freeing of slaves), selling and buying land and houses, besides testamentos.

    This is the link:
    http://eservicios.aguascalientes.gob.mx/seggob/acervodigital/notarial.a…

It will great if the guadalajara testamentos can be indexed too - i am still in for giving a hand with that.

    Regards
    Denise

good for you madera_32. but i'm still gonna pass on indexing wills since there's so many other records that still need indexing and guadalajara dispensas being #1 priority, and helping out with daniel's valladolid dispensas project, monte escobedo baptisms, silao info. mat. etc. being side/secondary projects i'm working on as well.

    Comment

    Hi Kathy,

What years are you working on in Monte Escobedo baptisms? I can't find the baptism of my 9th generation ancestor Blas Madera who should be baptized aroune late 1600's or early 1700's. I am curious about him because in his marriage record he was listed as a "mestizo" when his parents are listed as "espanoles - born in Mexico." But when he passed away in 1776, he was listed as a "mulatto libre."

That is odd. Which means one of his parents could not have been "espanol."

I wanted to find his baptism record to confirm. It should be at Mesquitic or Monte Escobedo.

    Hi Sergio

I would give it a shot, as I am looking for the testament of Juan Sotelo anyways.
    Basically, the info would be:

name of difunto and where they are from
    date of testamento
    film number
    image number

    anything else?

    For example:

    Blas Cordero, Zacatecas
    13 nov 1656
    film 007983535
    image 62/583

the above came from this page:

    https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSD2-Y9RN-V?mode=g&cat=130…

My Spanish is limited, but i recognize words like difunto and vecino and place names.
If someone set up the blog page, I would attempt to make contributions as i go through the records.

    Regards
    Denise

i'd rather focus on indexing marriage dispensations, but i looked through first few films briefly, and it seems like most of them are from guadalajara in particular(so they probably won't have anything relevant for my tree since i have no known ancestors who lived in guadalajara for most of their life), some are long, and it's kinda hard to tell when each one starts and ends.
just giving y'all a heads up

One of my distant relatives browsed and found a common ancestor for both of us that is from Mezqitic, Jalisco, Mexico. The testamento is year 1714, 50 pages long. Lots of stuff in it and our ancestor had a house in Ciudad Zacatecas on Santo Domingo street por la salida de la Ciudad Zacatecas for example.

    Hola Simona:

What a surprise to hear Edward's name mentioned on this website. His research is not connected to the areas of research that Nuestrosranchos members are usually interested in. I had done some research a few months back that caused me to cross paths with some of his research. The last time that I called to talk to him his daughter told me that he was resting. He is not in good health and I have him in my prayers. Please pray for him.

One section of my book will have a chapter on the intersection of some of our research.

Jose Lorenzo Coronado (9SZ9-L1K)and Maria Margarita Segovia b: about 1760 whose children starting in 1789 were born in Gaudalupe del Carnicero, Charcas, San Luis Potosi, Mexico. Their children are either mestizo or castizo. There are only 3 found could be more. The other couple Lorenso Coronado and Margarita Maria whose children (I only found Balvina 1765) might be a dif couple altogether.

could you include the dates of birth for the other two you found severiana and Pedro.
The coronados had their own Rancho named San Antonio de los Coronados whose records were mostly located in Charcas but there are some in Venado. The family married throughout San Luis and some even ventured out to jalisco, aguascalientes, and Pinos among other places.

Sorry I didn't respond earlier to everyone; my job has been keeping me busy. Thank you for your patience; there were circumstances that made it challenging to get here. I would like to thank the owner, too, who had to spend time fixing what was a less than straightforward issue.

In order to reinstate the site, I had to pay the renewal fee out of my own pocket, and the owner has been paying for years. I may try to see if we can create something to help the owner (and me!) defray the costs since we've all enjoyed the benefits of the site.

I'll look into this in December, once I have some free time to do so.

Thank you Daniel, Rosalinda, and Claudia,

. It is a very valuable resource that many of us have used to break through brick walls. Here are two examples:

Almost from the beginning of my building my family tree I came up against statements from a couple of prominent genealogists that my paternal ancestral line was inaccurate. All the pieces of the puzzle, when brought together, led to the conclusion that my constructed tree was correct. Mariano Gonzalez Leal and Jaime Holcombe did not have these ancestors in their work. Jaime Holcombe specifically states that this one ancestor died at a very young age before having family. Jaime Holcombe was incorrect in this statement. All of the records that I collected and brought together made sense only with the tree that I constructed from the many many pieces. But this tree was constructed from dozens of primary documents, and if a single one of those documents was in error, then the whole tree fell apart. It was only through the Guadalajara dispensations offerered online was I able to find a 1611 document that gave a complete seal of approval to this constructed family tree. It provided a primary piece of evidence without having to rely on the many many pieces of the puzzle that I had brought together.

The second example of the marriage dispensations helping me break through brickwalls was how I was able to find primary evidence that explained a big mystery of my De La Torre ancestors and how they were related to Miguel Hidalgo. This also helped me discover the De la Torre Ledesma ancestral family line all the way back to Spain. This line connects to the opposing side of the civil war between Pedro and Enrique II. I had already previously constructed my descent from many members of Enrique Ii's side of the civil war, so this discovery added more juice to the stories that I had collected of their conflict as the De La Torre Ledesma family descends from Pedro "el cruel" 's side of the civil war. This ancestral line shows how many of the founding fathers of Los Altos de Jalisco came from families that were related in Spain.

It is so invaluable that I I would like to ensure that it is never taken down again. I would gladly take over the management of keeping the site up. Please contact me.

    Thanks again,
    Rick A. Ricci

No serán antepasados tuyos?

The name Juan Velasco de Barrios reminds me of treasure hunters.

Many of the merchant ships in the Flota de Nueva Espafia of Captain-General Juan Velasco de Barrios carried Silver and Gold. Captain-General Juan Velasco de Barrios was headed back to Spain with Silver and Gold when he found out that the English were planning on attacking his ships to take his Precious metals.

Capitan- General Juan Velasco de Barrios decided to evade the English by taking another route to Spain, but this new route took too long and he then had to travel during hurricane season in dangerous waters. He tried to outrun the storms unsuccessfully as he lost many ships, and their precious cargo. Over many years, treasure hunters have been looking for these lost ships.

    Thanks again,

Can some experienced genealogist decipher/read this word?

    Hello forum,

I am trying to find out what the following word is.

It is in a christening record. The record is at the top of the right hand side page here:

Many thanks for your kind reply Manny. I agree with you. But I am not sure because the editor wrote the word "benefi[cia]do in the record just below Juana's record and "do" looks very different.

Sometimes the word "Licenciado" was abbreviated "Lzdo", but editor's "z" also looks quite different. That is what I am thinking maybe the word could be another one.

    Un cordial saludo Manny,

    Rubén

Is it digo? The word that is commonly used to refer to a person previously recited in the record, as in "said Lazaro Hernandez" in English.

    Comment

    Hi Ruben,

After taking another look, you’re right. It names Lazaro Hernandez twice, and it gives no title on the first entry. I’m going to say, “hijos del dho Lazº Hz.”

“Dicho” would be appropriate and typical, and looks like Alex also thinks the same,

Many thanks Alejandro for taking part in this topic.

Taking a closer look to the 3rd. record on the left hand side page (Pedro) the same editor wrote:

("cho" looks very similar to the last part of the unknown word)

    ... yjo de miguel y dey savel ... = ... yjo de miguel y de ysabel ...

(The words are not properly separated)

I think the "L" at the starting of the unknown word is part of the previous word "de" ("de L" = "del"). So the editor tried to write "... hijos del [di]cho Laz[ar]o ..." but he failed to write the "di" part.

    Raquel,

The two baptisms don't seem to show a huge connection to the Alonso de los Hinojos. There does appear to be some connection to the Flores de la Torre family though. The padrinos of Feliciana on her baptism are Nicolasa Flores de la Torre and Dionicio Macias Valadez. The padrino of her sister Juana Francisca is Cristobal Flores de la Torre, brother of Nicolasa Flores de la Torre, both children of Hernan Flores de la Torre and Gertrudis Ornelas. Cristobal Flores de la Torre's wife Maria Diaz/Dominguez seems to be a peripheral relative of the Alonso de los Hinojos at best. Maria Diaz/Dominguez is the daughter of Miguel Diaz Montanez and Josepha Diaz. Miguel Diaz Montanez is the son of Juan Montanez and Sebastiana Diaz, Sebastiana Diaz is the daughter of Miguel Diaz and Maria Medel and Maria Medel is the daughter of Pedro Medel and Ana Dominguez.

Sebastiana Diaz that's married to Juan Montanez is the sister of the Ana Dominguez that's married to Pedro Alonso de los Hinojos. That Ana Domiguez is the granddaughter of the Ana Domiguez married to Pedro Medel. Unfortunately I can't really connect your Miguel Alonso to the Alonso de los Hinojos.

Fernando Torres de la Torre, both married to a Gertrudis de Ornelas and

Josefa, baptized 25 May 1684. I'm wondering if this is the same Josefa
Flores who married Nicolas Alonoso de los Ynojos, son of Pedro Alonso de

If "that couple" is Nicolas Alonso de los Ynojos and Josefa Flores, Nicolas

As Danny stated before, an "Encargado del Registro Civil" is/was the person in charge of the Civil Registry Office, where civil birth, marriage and death records were carried out.

Of course it depends on what time we are talking about, but it used to be an important office and required a person of certain education and position to be in charge of.

Diego Alonso “El Mozo” died and was buried 2 Feb 1657, and Maria del Hierro, on 25 Jun 1658, both in San Felipe, Gto, where they were residents. They were parents of Alonso de los Hinojos Hierro, b. 2 Dec 1613, in Zamora, Mich, and Diego Bernal de los Hinojos Hierro cc Catalina Martin.

On his death registry, Diego Alonso "El Mozo" is said to be a native of Valladolid (Morelia, Mich).

    Hola prim@s,

Juan Martin de los Hinojos aka Juan Alonso de los Hinojos married Josefa Gutierrez, 14 May 1684, in Aguascalientes. He was son of Alonso Martin Mateos Saldaña and Maria Lopez del Castillo (m. 5 Mar 1628, San Luis Potosi), and she, viuda of Pedro Macias.

This one’s interesting: where does the “Alonso de los Hinojos” come from????

I have an idea: I think it’s likely that his father, Alonso Martin Mateos Saldaña, was a son of Diego Martin Mateos cc Maria de Saldaña, of SLP. Though it’s possible that the surname came from one of them, I think it’s more likely that the source is his mother, Maria Lopez del Castillo. I’d wager that she is a daughter of Juan Alonso de los Hinojos cc Beatriz Lopez del Castillo, and that she took her mother’s surname. Juan would’ve been named for his maternal grandfather. The timelines and locations fit. By the way, according to her burial record, Maria Lopez del Castillo did leave a testamento, but it doesn't appear to be available online.

That is my guess, as far as the source of Juan Martin’s “Alonso de los Hinojos.” But then, on his 19 May 1707 testamento, he’s given the name, “Juan de Armas Alonso de los Hinojos.” I haven’t researched this person, so I don’t know if “Armas” was a reoccurring surname, or a typo. Anyone?

I think it’s fascinating how the Alonso de los Hinojos y Sanchez de Ulloa spoked-off into 3 branches, with 3 sons, living in 3 different reales: Juan Alonso in SLP, Diego Alonso “El Mozo” in San Felipe Gto, and Pedro Alonso in Aguascalientes via Sierra de Pinos. Diego Alonso “El Viejo” owned a recua, which is what would have led him to moving to SLP: the need for pack trains, for hauling silver to Veracruz. Juan Alonso also owned a recua, likely inherited from his father, since he remained in SLP. I wonder if the other sons were in the same trade? Truckers of the 17th century!

Btw, I’ll start a thread on the Martin Mateos Saldaña, I have a lot of material on them, I just need to synthesize it.

    Saludos!

    Home prim@s,

Here's some info I've picked up on 2 of the daughters of Diego Alonso cc Leonor Sanchez, with the possible addition of another offspring:

    LEONOR SANCHEZ

Leonor Sanchez was born in Zamora, Mich. She married Francisco Batalla, 12 Sep 1625, in San Luis Potosi. He was from Villa de Arruda, in Portugal, son of Francisco Batalla and Gracia Anarte. On their marriage record, the bride uses the name, Leonor de los Hinojos.

They had one child, Francisca Batalla, who married (1) Mateo Jimenez, and (2), Alonso Perez de Bocanegra, on 8 May 1662, in San Luis Potosi.

On 10 Apr 1653, already widowed, and sick and near dying, Leonor Sanchez gave power of attorney to Alonso Perez de Bocanegra, allowing him to dictate her testament.

On 09 Jul 1653, Leonor Sanchez registered her testament, naming Alonso Perez de Bocanegra as her executor, and her daughter, Francisca de Batalla, as her heir.

    YSABEL SANCHEZ DE ULLOA
    m1. Juan Múñoz (or Múñiz)
    m2. Bartolomé de Medina

Ysabel Sanchez de Ulloa married twice: her first husband was Juan Muñoz, also Muñiz, a merchant. They had one son, Juan Muñoz (& Muñiz) “El Mozo,” b. 13 Jul 1616, Sagrario, San Luis Potosi.

On 25 Jul 1615, Lorenso Sanchez de Ulloa, dueño de requa, y su cuñado, Juan Muñoz, promised to pay Francisco de Fuente, resident of Mexico City, and Simon Luis, his local intermediary, 528 pesos of common gold for 16 mules, male and female, of assorted colors. Witnesses present were Diego Alonso de los Hinojos and Pedro Alonso de los Hinojos.

I believe this is the same Juan Muñoz who was married to Ysabel Sanchez de Ulloa, therefore, Lorenso Sanchez de Ulloa would be her brother. He uses their mother’s surname, and might have a different father. Apparently, Lorenso Sanchez and Juan Muñoz had problems paying their loan, and were thrown into jail.

On 15 Feb 1651, Sagrario SLP, baptized was Maria, daughter of Lorenso Sanchez arriero and Francisca de Contreras; padrinos were Juan Muñoz and his mother, Ysabel Sanchez.

On 06 Mar 1653, Ysabel Sanchez gave power to write her testamento to her 2nd husband, Bartolome Medina, and to her son, Juan Muñiz.

    Hola prim@s,

I finally got around to compiling my notes on 3 confirmed sons of Diego Alonso and Ysabel Sanchez:

DIEGO ALONSO DE LOS HINOJOS "EL "MOZO" AND MARIA DEL HIERRO

Diego Alonso de los Hinojos “El Mozo” and Maria del Hierro were likely married in Zamora, where they baptized Alonso in Dec 1613. By 1615, they were already living in San Luis Potosi.

On 18 May 1623, Jorge Beneciano took Diego Alonso to court, demand payment on a debt owed. Looks like their belongings were or will be put up for public auction; Maria del Hierro, mention of her dowry of 1,500 pesos given at time she married.

Diego Alonso and Maria del Hierro would eventually move to San Felipe, Gto, where he died 2 Feb 1657, and she, 25 Jun 1658.

The children of Diego Alonso and Maria del Hierro are:

    1. Alonso Alonso de los Hinojos Hierro, b. 02 Dec 1613, Sagrario, Zamora.

JUAN ALONSO DE LOS HINOJOS AND BEATRIZ LOPEZ DEL CASTILLO

Juan Alonso de los Hinojos and Beatriz Lopez del Castillo likely married in Zamora, Mich, where they baptized Magdalena, 30 Apr 1610. The madrina for the baptism of Juana, 30 Dec 1613, was the child’s grandmother, Juana Lopez, who would be the mother of Beatriz Lopez del Castillo.

On 27 Nov 1618, Diego de Espinosa recognized that he owed Juan Alonso 300 pesos for the purchase of 30 mules, as many male as female, of various colors and wearing the brand, drawn in the margin. By this time, Juan Alonso was already living in San Luis Potosi.

On 30 Sep 1622, Juan Alonso and his wife, Beatriz Lopez del Castillo recognize that they owe Capitan Jorge Beneciano 400 pesos de oro comun. Mentioned are their slaves, Gracia e Ysabel Criollas en Cdad Mexico y de edad de 22 anos, whom I imagine they use as collateral. Neither Juan Alonso nor Beatriz Lopez could sign their names, and one of the witnesses present, was Diego Alonso de los Hinojos El Moso.

    * I don’t have it confirmed that Maria Lopez del Castillo cc Alonso Martin Mateos is part of this family group, though for reasons cited in an earlier post in this thread, I think it’s likely.

    Hello, Manny.

You can remove that asterisk! Per Dr. Helguera's notes from a research trip to Aguascalientes: Ags 72/73v. PN 3/2.

I wrote in my notes that she died 9 Oct 1680 AGS per will through son Nicolas via "poder." She was a widow.

    Appreciate all your work. Thanks.

    Regards,
    Mary Lou
