A couple of my ancestresses were "hijas natural"
and had "padre no conocido".  They had their mother's maiden names.
For example, my grandmother's grandmother was Petra Gomez whose madre was
Maria del Refugio Gomez but padre was no conocido.

My father's father birth record says he was hijo
natural of Dorotea Hernandez and then mentions the two male witnesses.  On
my dad's birth certificate, the abuelos paternos were Pasqual Hernandez and
Dorotea Martinez.  Then on my dad's BAPTISMAL record, it states the abuelos
paternos were Pasqual Hernandez and Dorotea Ramos.  Go figure.

While looking at the International Genealogical Index I came across
an ancestor possibly having a child with a woman other than his wife
during the late 1700's. The child carried the father's last name
only (no mother's name attached at the end)and only the mother's
first name was listed. I was under the impression an illegitimate
child never used his father's last name, so this confused me.

I've ordered a copy of the entry from the History Center, but it
will take weeks for me to receive it. In the meantime, does anyone
know if there were strict standards regarding an illegitimate
child's use of a father's last name? And also, why would only a
first name be listed for a mother? I see this all the time while
perusing the IGI.

Thanks,

Alicia

Well if it were me I'd start by evaluating the evidence pointing me to
another country. If I had strong compelling evidence I'd consider a
move in that direction. If I didn't I'd search frame by frame films
easily avialable via the LDS system. If that didn't work I'd go to
outside the LDS system info or be looking into this info at the same
time. . .maybe some Tlajomulco letters to the church(s) are in order or
possibly consider a one time consultation with someone that is well
versed in the history/genealogy of that area. Below there is a census
from the Archivo de Indias that is available with some effort. I guess
the main point I'm trying to make is to make sure you are pointed in
the right direction before you jump. . .otherwise

QUESTION TO ALL MEMBERS

Hello. I am stuck with a branch of my genealogy and have a doubt
that maybe some of you may answer. When you think that you found
your earliest ancestor in Mexico, how do you start your research on
that line on another country? The reason I am asking this is because
I cannot find any information on the IGI about my Apodaca ancestors
in Jalisco before 1784. I know that my ancestor Domingo Apodaca was
a mestizo married that year and that his parents were Jose Maria
Apodaca and Paula de Albiano. However, where should I look for info
about the origin of the parents? Domingo's wife, Gertrudis Bonal,
was a espanola and I can trace her ancestors back to the beginning
of the 1700's in Tlajomulco, Jalisco. I know where to look for these
ancestors. But for my Apodaca line, I just don't know what to do. I
am planning to check all documents of Domingo's brothers and their
children to see if I can find a clue about Jose Maria Apodaca and
Paula de Albiano. Can anyone of you help me

New Members/Old Members/Ranchos2

welcome to the New Members. . .just as a word.

I have little control over the genealogies of the group other than
trusting in the integrity of the membership. That is the reason I insist
on keeping the genealogies in the non-public "files" area or if your
work is on a webpage in the non-public "links" area of the group. I
would discourage you from sending in your work as attachments to the
whole group as was recently the case. . .to do so is done at your own
risk since the archives are public.

Also for the sake of privacy I'd encourage you all to begin with your
grandparents (if they have deceased) and go back from them.

Also I've noticed that we have 71 members but only 60 members of the
Ranchos2 group.

so that means that 11 of you can't access the Ranchos2 "files" area. Try
this:

go to the ranchos "links" area.
go to the link called "Ranchos2"
click on it and see if it takes you to a link for the Ranchos2 files area
if it doesn't send an email to makas@... asking

Trip to Nochistlan

Deena,

One of the most important items to prepare before you drive across into Mexico is to check your auto insurance coverage.  Chances are your company will not cover you while in Mexico.   I suggest you get on the internet and just type  "Sanborn" for the search.  Sanborn is a company that has been offering insurance and travel information for Mexico for many years.  Their services include, strip maps and travelogs for your trip just like the AAA provides.   I used them years ago and it was well worth the cost.   The gas station situation then was a real gamble with poorly marked pumps for the various fuels (leaded, unleaded, etc).  I'm sure things have improved a little.  Perhaps someone in the group has been there recently and can provide up to date information.

Trip to Nochistlan

Deena,

We plan on going this September. We have been 3 times previously. We go by plane, fly into Guadalajara or Aguascalientes. Guadalajara has lower air fares and more flights than Aguascalientes but the Aguas airport and city as it's often called is not as crowded and is easier to get in and out of.

As I live in Northern California I have driven once and it was an arduous 4 day trip via Arizona, New Mexico into El Paso Texas and through Coahihuila, Chihuahua, Durango and through to southern Zacatecas cutting in through parts of Northern Jalisco.

I for one would never drive it again but it was a good experience to do it once. If you need more detailed driving information I can look it up. The last two times we hired a driver at the airport in Guadalajara. He could make more money in one week as our driver than he could as a shuttle bus driver at the airport for two months. We rented a car and he drove us around to Nochistlan, Tlachichila and surrounding towns. It was great!!

Updated information

Dear Ranchos Group,

I have finished my summer courses and have had time to
sit and sort through some of the information that my
mother brought back to me about a month ago. She
visited one of her great aunts that still resides in
Sain Alto and obtained some useful information.

I even got some pictures of my great grandmother
Marcela Castrejon, great aunt Maria Sierra that lived
in Moorpark, California, and my great grandfather,
Pablo Gonzalez Monsivais. Words can not describe the
joy I felt to have these in my possession. I can
really see so many features that have been passed on
to me and others in my extended family. I don't have a
scanner but will buy one soon and upload them into the
pictures section for all to see.

All the information is strictly word of mouth and
recollection on the part of my mother's great aunt and
other various relatives. I plan to seek the documents
to back up the information. In the meantime, I have
typed up the names of my relatives, some are

Trip to Nochistlan

Deena,

Do you plan to drive? How long do you plan to travel?

I think the trip is somewhat long, but I am not too
sure. If you have never traveled to Mexico by way of
car, then I suggest you visit a AAA office if you are
a member.

I obtained a book from them and it was very handy when
my husband and I went three years ago. AAA also gave
us a detailed map of Mexico that I just gave to my
husband's cousin yesterday. He is going to Magdalena ,
Jalisco.

I looked through the book I have, Mexico Travel Book,
2001 edition by AAA. It has a map of the highways and
approximate times between cities. I calculated the
trip from San Diego to Zacatecas, the capital city, to
be roughly 34-36 hours long, depending on the route.
Depending on the border town you wish to go through.
This is what the book tells me, however, I have never
traveled this route.

You can travel down the west coast of Mexico to
Mazatlan and cut across to Durango (Mazatlan to
Durango is about 5 and a half hrs) and

Trip to Nochistlan

What would be the best way to travel to Nochistlan, Zacatecas, Mexico from
southern California? Can you give me approximate distances and/or hours
involved in each leg of the trip? I seriously hope to make the trip with my
husband in February/March, 2005, on our way to Oaxaca.
