Gutierrez. They had children in the 1690s and probly earlier too.

Hi Danny,

Joseph de Villalobos was son of Francisco de Villalobos cc Maria Vasquez de Retamosa, and Melchora Gutierrez Coronado was daughter of Juan Gutierrez Coronado and Maria de Cabrera. Here’s their IM, 06 Jun 1690:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-D5LX-HP?mode=g&i=484&wc=M6…

Francisco de Villalobos was son of Cristobal de Villalobos cc Maria Perez de Nava, of Mexico City, and Maria Vasquez de Retamosa daughter of Gaspar Macias cc Mariana de Torres. Francisco and Maria married 22 May 1640 in Teocaltiche.

Saludos, and Happy New Year!

Felipe Lopez-Francisca Gonzalez

Felipe Lopez and Francisca Gonzalez also had a daughter named Gertrudis Lopez (born around 1670) who married Pedro Sanchez De Paez on 8 Jun 1688 in Teocaltiche, Jalisco. He was the son of Francisco De La Paz y Cortes (Paez) and Francisca Sanchez De Hermosillo.

Has anyone uncovered information on Felipe Lopez and Francisca Gonzalez?

Ultimately, Francisca's maternal line will be indigenous. I am a direct descendant of hers through my X chromosome (so my mother's mother's mother's ... etc.).

Another thing, I found a potential record for Gertrudis Lopez and Pedro Sanches de Paes. A child named Brisio Marino Sanches Macias was baptized in Jalostotitlan, Mexico on 8 Sep. 1701 to a Pedro Sanches de Paez and a Gertrudis Macias. ...I am not sure if perhaps it has something to do with what Miguel Beltran stated a few years ago in this post about Gertrudis' brother Joseph being from Sauz (De Los Macias).

Regards,
Vanessa

Hola Miguel,

No he encontrado ninguna información que

What I would like to know is whether this Thomas Sanchez de Paez who married Francisca Torres is the same Thomas Sanchez De Paez who married Lugrada De Chaves Estrada. The only thing I found odd about Thomas' marriage to Lugrada is that there is no indication that he was widowed which is something I've never come across. Let me know if I am mistaken, thanks:

Is this the same person? Maybe he had a brother with a similar name?

In this letter, Jaime Holcombe refers to a 1686 marriage dispensation with two different blood relationships, but of particular interest is the second lineage where Juan González de Hermosillo and Ana-María Muñoz appear as the tronco. They were the parents of full brothers Juan González de Hermosillo and Francisco Muñoz Cabeza (de Vaca). Juan González de Hermosillo fathered Ana Muñoz-González, an illegitimate mestiza, about 1615, in an indian woman from Tonallan (Tonalá) named María Magdalena, shortly before he married his legitimate wife Ana González Florida. Juan's brother Francisco Muñoz Cabeza was married ca. 1624, in Jalostotitlán to Francisca de Torres, after whom the bride in the dispensa is named.

Ana Muñoz-González married Diego Sánchez Carranza, both identified and recognized as mestizos, and whose death records are both located in Jalostotitlán.

Your notes on three documents that you let me have are very interesting. I would like to comment about them, and add information that I have, should it be of interest to you.
1. Marriage dispensa in Jalos, 27 April 1686 for Tomás de Paez and Francisca de Torres. Twice blood related in the fourth to the third degree.
The surname "Paez" stands for de la Paz y Cortés.
The first tree is as follows:

Tronco: Jerónimo de Benavides and Catalina Cortés

María Benavides------------------------ 1st-------------- Jerónima Benavides
md. Carlos Lomelín md. 1) Nicolás (Paez) de la Paz y Cortés

Domingo Lomelín---------------------- 2nd------------- Francisco (Paez) de la Paz y Cortés
md. Juana de Mendoza md. Francisca Sánchez Carranza

[Joseph de Lomelín]----------------------- 3rd---------- Thomas de Páez, the groom
[+Micaela de Hermosillo]

Francisca Torres, the bride--------------- 4th

Jerónima de Benavides' second husband was Diego de Aguayo, with whom she also had offspring. Juana de Mendoza's parents were Manuel Gómez and Catalina de Mendoza.
This is the second tree:

Tronco: Juan González de Hermosillo and María Muñoz

Juan González de Hermosillo--------- 1st-------------- Francisco Muñoz Cabessa
had an illegitimate daughter md. Francisca de Torres
an Indian from Tonallán (Tonalá)

Ana Muñoz (mestiza)------------------ 2nd------------- Micaela de Hermosillo
md. Diego Sánchez Carranza md Joseph de Lomelín
(mestizo)

Francisca Sánchez Carranza----------- 3rd------------- Francisca Torres, the bride
[+Francisco de Páez]

Thomas de Páez, the groom ----------- 4th

A dispensa on file states that Juan González de Hermosillo, married to Ana González Florida, was the natural father of Ana Muñoz, conceived with an Indian woman in Tonallán (Tonalá).
You'll note that the bride used the same name as that of her maternal grandmother. She appears in the 1685 Jalos Census as "doncella." I knew she'd married some de la Paz y Cortés from dispensas of descendants, but you filled in the marriage blank space.
The couple did not remain in Jalos long, and don't know where they settled. They were not in Jalos. Two of their daughters married there the same date (5 June 1737), Francisca Alejandra and Catalina de la Paz y Cortés y Arias de Ibarra, to two brothers: José Joaquín and Ignacio Pérez Franco y Hermosillo (sons of Capt. Juan Pérez de Paredes and Gertrudis de Hermosillo y Camarena). José Joaquín's and Francisca Alejandra's son, Juan José Gabriel Pérez Franco y de la Paz y Cortés had to obtain a dispensa, on 15 Oct 1761, to allow his marriage (celebrated 11 Nov 1761) to a blood relative, María Gertrudis González de Hermosillo y Sánchez. In that dispensa is where Francisca de Torres appears, and her son, Antonio de la Paz y Cortés. Since the 1737 weddings, they're all "españoles."
I didn't have Marcos Carranza, the witness at the 1686 dispensa, as the latter couple's son. Looking through my notes, I found a Jalos death that brought out another stem from a second illegitimate coupling. States the death entry:
"En Jalostotitlán, el 5 de agosto de 1672, Marcos Carranza, vecino de la jurisdicción de Juanacatlán, trajo a enterrar a su cuñado, Fluxencio González, soltero."
"Fluxencio" is Fulgencio.

In the previous entry I forgot to provide source documentation for the Marriage Dispensation of Tomás de Páez (plus his signature) and Francisca de Torres. It can be located in Montejano Hilton's book and on FamilySearch.org. Plus the spacing of the information made it a bit confusing...I added spacing periods.

Final conclusions and notes regarding Ana González Florida II
(based on all documentary evidence regarding her)

Doña Ana González Florida II was a daughter of Francisco Gutiérrez Rubio and Ana González Florida I, born about 1594-1595, in the jurisdiction of Jalostotitlán, back then part of the Encomienda de Juanacatlán – a large swath of land that roughly encompassed parts of the present-day municipalities of Juanacatlán, Cuquío, Jalostotitlán, Zapotlanejo, Acatíc, Tepatitlán de Morelos, Pegueros, Mezcala, and Valle de Guadalupe – within the Reino de la Nueva Galicia. Her parents were prosperous “Españoles” who owned vast tracts of land in the local region. She married Juan González de Hermosillo II (son of Juan González de Hermosillo I and Anna María Muñoz, patriarchs of the vast González de Hermosillo lineage and also wealthy land-owners) sometime around 1614-1617, in the same area of Nueva Galicia.

Remarkably, Ana González Florida II is remembered through oral history as a light-skinned beautiful rich woman who stood up very straight and was tall and physically imposing. Her beauty was so well known that if people heard she was coming they would stop, put everything aside, and wait to for a chance to see her. However, one dark night in the 1630s, near the Hacienda de La Venta, in the jurisdiction of Juanacatlán (now Valle de Guadalupe), the local population awoke to the commotion of barking dogs and voices shouting, “Lion!! Lion!!” People rushed outside with torches, but the wind blew out most lights. Uncertain in the darkness that it was actually a lion, Ana got too close and it pounced on her from behind as she tried to flee. As she was being mauled, Anna beseeched the mercy of Our Lady of San Juan de los Lagos. Neighboring people came to her rescue and killed the animal. Her recovery was attributed as a miracle of Our Lady and she left one of the lion’s paws in the Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de San Juan de los Lagos as an “exvoto” – votive proof of the Virgin’s intercession. For the rest of her life she was permanently scarred, tough to say if psychologically as well, but certainly physically; her arm, back, shoulders, and one side of her face and head were left scarred with teeth and claw marks. She was in her late 30s or early 40s and continued to have several children after her lion attack. She made a joint will and testament with her husband Juan González de Hermosillo on 20 February 1665, before don Gaspar Cortés Hurtado de Mendoza, former Corregidor of Colimilla and Matatlán.

After Ana’s husband, Juan González de Hermosillo II died on 6 January 1666 [Source: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18450-50456-97?cc=1874591&wc…], in Juanacatlán, and buried in Jalostotitlán, it is likely she began to dress in black, as was the custom for a widow in mourning for a deceased husband, and covered her head and most of her face with a black shawl or veil to conceal the claw-marks on one side of her face and head. Presumably, she lived the remainder of her days completely alone in her isolated abode in “El Castillo del Águila”, in the Hacienda de La Venta, far from the other Spanish land-owners, and was seldom seen by her neighbors. This made her a mysterious figure who literally became a sort of outcast – a “black widow”. It was typical during colonial times to accuse enigmatic old women or widows of witchcraft or suspect them of some other misdeed.
In 18 March 1668, her son Melchor González de Hermosillo became the first to provide written testimony of his mother’s lion attack and miraculous recovery, over 30 years prior. This account affirms that Melchor was approximately 17 years old, and his mother Ana González Florida was about 40 years of age at the time of her historic lion attack. Four years later, on 27 April 1672, Anna González Florida revoked her previous 1665 will and testament, and drafted a new one before Diego Orozco de Agüero, deputy mayor of the Jalostotitlán jurisdiction.

Anna González Florida II died at the age of approximately 77-78 years. We get a glimpse at her wealth and prominence in her death and burial record, dated 7 May 1672, in the Parroquia de Jalostotitlán. She received “the sacraments of confession, Viaticum [the Sacrament of communion that is given to people who are about to die] and extreme unction [anointing with holy oil] and she was sent to be buried with vigil [a night-long series of prayers and recitals of the Rosary] and sung Mass.” Her death record does not specify her relationship with Leonor de Hermosillo – either her sister-in-law, married to Miguel Gutiérrez Rubio, or her daughter, married to Gerónimo Sánchez de Porras – to whom she bequeathed ten “chichigua” cows [small cows used for nursing] and twelve mares.” Apparently she had at least one slave named Pedro Moya, whom she set free upon her death. She left Cristóbal Muñoz, ten cows and twelve mares, two Reales [famous Spanish dollar “pieces-of-eight, equal to 16 pesos] for required rituals, and 15 ducats to the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament of Jalostotitlán. [In the seventeenth century in Spain and its colonies the “ducado de plata/silver ducat” was used as a measurement unit, not a minted coin. One ducado/ducat was equivalent to 375 silver maravedíes, the name of various Spanish coins and accounting units between the 11th and 19th centuries.] Livestock, such as cattle, sheep, horses, pigs, meant monetary wealth, and exactly how many head of livestock Anna González owned is unsure but it must have a lot. She additionally left to the Confraternity of Solitude of Jalostotitlán four sheep, and to the Confraternity of the Souls of Jalostotitlán two young bulls. These confraternities – Cofradías – were generally voluntary brotherhoods of lay people created for the purpose of promoting special works of Christian charity or piety, and approved by the Church hierarchy. They were organized and managed generationally by believers who would gather around an invocation of Christ, the Virgin Mary, a particular saint or saintly relic, a moment of Christ’s passion, with pious, religious and welfare purposes. As temporal bodies, they possessed properties, land, livestock, and other valuable resources.

She left as executors of her will her sons, Juan González de Hermosillo and Melchor González de Hermosillo. And finally, she bestowed seven and a half pesos to Esteban Gómez Hurtado de Mendoza, who was the “Mayordomo de fábrica” [the person who collects the revenues of the church and administrates the “fábrica/factory”, which in turn is the body or group of persons responsible for the management of the assets of the church in general income and maintenance of the parish church, both for repairs and for the celebration of divine service] and another peso for the dalmatics [long wide-sleeved tunics, usually white and made of either flax or wool, and which serve as liturgical vestments for priests in the Roman Catholic church, and which were produced in the church’s own textile “fábrica/factory”. In the Nueva Galicia of the 17th century, wool was a textile fiber worth its weight in gold or silver, hence the equivalence of “lana/wool” with money.] The fact that Ana González Florida had several sheep and donated four to the Cofradía de la Soledad (Brotherhood of Solitude) meant she had more she left to her sons and her family. Her death and burial entry was recorded by Fr. Juan Gómez de Santiago (heading). [Burial source: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18450-50547-1?cc=1874591&wc=…]

After the death of Ana González Florida II, rumors began to spread that she had been a very cruel woman who had accumulated her fortune because she supposedly had been the secret mastermind behind a ruthless ring of robbers and bandits that terrorized carriers and other people of the local region, stealing their livestock and money, amassing an enormous fortune – and then was never heard from again. This disappearance, attributed to her death, later metamorphosed into the legend that her ghost, or disembodied spirit, wandered the dark nights. She would appear as the specter of a beautiful woman, who upon turning her face, would reveal a monstrous and horribly deformed face. Additional embellishments to the legend blamed her for continuing crimes, aided by fierce animals that she had the power to control. This legend became known regionally, particularly in Valle de Guadalupe, as “La Conseja de la Vieja del Concilio” – a sort of Llorona alteña. Locals say that they have seen her wandering the old dirt roads (caminos reales) where she used to assault her victims. Some old people used to say that when she appeared, many thought she was the Llorona, but since they never heard her cry, they knew it was La Vieja del Concilio, so they ran even faster.”

This biography of Ana González Florida II represents a compendium of perspectives from various sources across time. Worthy of particular gratitude are everyone who have contributed to the discussion above, and all previous individuals who have researched, preserved, and conveyed the story of Ana González Florida II – her son Melchor González de Hermosillo, her parroco Martín Casillas y Cabrera [Source: “Historia de Nuestra Señora de San Juan de los Lagos y del culto de esta milagrosa imagen” por Alberto Santoscoy, 1903 [pages 152-153] https://books.google.com/books?id=H74MAAAAIAAJ&printsec=frontcover&sour…], Rito Romo Franco, Jorge Humberto Romo Barba, Jaime Holcombe, Mariano González Leal [RETOÑOS DE ESPAÑA EN LA NUEVA GALICIA, Tomo I, pg. 120, 2ª. Thank you very much on your "Final conclusions and notes regarding Ana González Florida II".
There was a problem with robbers in the area during her lifetime but, as you said, she inherited much of her fortune from her parents, and continuing to accumulate wealth through the vast land holdings. The main home was situated in what is now Valle de Guadalupe but the land extended out.

The problem with the gangs was so bad that they sent out someone, I forget who, to be like a sergeant and protect the area so goods could pass through the area without threat. The person they sent settled in the area and is now considered one of the patriarchal families.
I never believed that she was the head of the gangs, but some of her ex employees may have joined them. It was her vast property, or close to it, that had to be crossed where these bandits would do their thing and terrorize the travelers. Once they were managed, more and more people traveled to Jalostotitlan.

Another point to the story is the mystery. Like you stated, as she aged she interacted less with the people between Tepatitlan and el Valle de Guadalupe, and moved closer to the town of Jalostotitlan. Her land was so vast that moving from one end to another was kind of like moving from one town to another. So even though she still lived on her property, it was farther away from where her parents had first established their main home. The family, employees and acquaintances she left from Tepatitlan to el Valle de Guadalupe saw much less of her as she got older and spent ever increasing time closer to Jalostotitlan. The people that she interacted more with over time were the people from Jalostotitlan.

As to the change in her personality due to the lion attack, it would be highly unusual if it had not affected her. She was a very beautiful woman, face and body, the whole package. Her height and the way she stood only made her stand out even more. It was as if she had been trained to be a model that way she carried herself. To be brutally attacked, over what must have seemed to her a long period of time, had to have affected her. The story was that they did not rush in to help her immediately because everyone was scared and the lion seemed to have had initial control of the situation. I don't know if she became a cruel woman but I would suspect that she was not the happy woman that she had been before the attack. She had everything before the attack. Beauty, inheritance, bloodlines, family, confidence, and a strong intellect. What she had been most known for before the attack was her beauty and that was taken away from her. She did continue to have everything else.

Thanks again for your work,

Rick A. Ricci

Don Mariano also states that your tíos, Dr. Rito Romo Franco and Lic. Jorge Humberto Romo Barba, were working on a book called “Valle de Guadalupe: historia, tradición y personajes”. Was this book ever published? Are there any extant copies available? I’m sure many, such as myself, would love a copy of said book. I searched and only located a Facebook page titled just that – Valle de Guadalupe: historia, tradición y personajes - https://www.facebook.com/groups/264734628175/?fref=nf

I find it worthwhile to point out as Don Mariano states “…la mencionada conseja, sumamente deformada a través de incontables generaciones de trasmisión oral de la misma.” / [“…the aforementioned legend has been summarily deformed throughout countless generations of oral transmission of the same.”]. Obviously every legend contains some kernel of truth, which then becomes exaggerated and embellished over time...in this case Llorona style. Since none of us were really actually there to witness first-hand any event that ever occurred in the past (but we wish we could), we each have to reach our own conclusions and what happened based on the scant proof left behind: oral history and documentary evidence. And through combination of all sorts of varied sources, a clearer picture emerges, and everybody can freely reach their own conclusions.

I believe that Steven has aptly described how stories can be exaggerated and embellished over time. We often hear of stories taking a life of their own with little resemblance to the original story.

What I want to add right now is that stories are not always exaggerated over time. I can verify that many stories from my family tree have been the opposite of exaggerated. Life is sometimes stranger or harder to believe than fiction. Sometimes stories are minimized, and for different reasons. If I were to publish right now, I would take out many stories or soften the impact that they could have on people's perception of their grandparents, great grandparents, great uncles and great aunts.

Jorge Romo Baraba did finish the book but not until until many many years after my tio Rito Romo Franco passed away. Many people highly praise this book. I have enjoyed many hours of reading about my family in this book. The book is about the history and traditions of the town. The book does have genealogical information and stories about many people from the Valle de Guadalupe. I have a copy of the book. My tio Jorge Romo Barba was a politician. He was even a politician in writing this book. Much genealogical information was left out for varied reasons that I won't go into right here. The lines, besides not being complete, only go back a few generations. There is nothing wrong in focusing on genealogy over a one hundred fifty year period.

I liked my tio Jorge Romo Barba. He was a nice man. He was a man with organizational skills, and was a great conversationalist. He, like most politicians, had a gift of speech, to turn a conversation to a certain direction. His interest ran more into putting together some stories together about the culture and traditions of the town. The stories of people in his book are mostly about people that are still living or had lived in the twentieth or nineteenth century. He himself did not do much genealogical research in comparison to other family members.

The genealogist was my tio Rito Romo Franco and the uncles and aunts before him. Our family had not only an oral history, but a history of writing down little bits of information, leaving them spread out to be collected like jig saw puzzle pieces to be put together and made sense of.

Some stories have become legends where we wonder what part is true, just like Steven said. But other stories have been downplayed and their significance minimized, sometimes on purpose, to minimize the pain or discomfort that would come from the disclosure of such information. Sometimes the stories are downplayed because they just seem too incredible to be true.

I understand that this is a very old topic, like since the 1630s to the 1650s, but I feel compelled to comment about discerning reality/truth versus legend/myth. I quote from Rick Rodriguez, http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/16826, et al...

The account of Ana González Florida's lion attack does not mention that she received any facial injuries, so it is highly doubtful she did but it is within the realm of probability. If so the injuries may have been near her shoulders, neck, ears, and/or cheek. What is certain is that she was attacked sometime about 1630-1635, and that the mountain lion attacked her from behind "...(el león) con la boca y la mano la cogió por la muñeca, con las dos manos hizo presa en las espaldas y brazo, y con los pies en los muslos [the lion with its mouth and paw grabbed her by the wrist, and with its fore paws gripped her back and arm, and with its hind paws on her thighs]" and "Curaron a la dicha Ana González de las heridas de las garras, y en breve sanó, pero le quedaron perpetuamente señaladas las uñas y colmillos del león / [They cured the said Ana Gonzalez of her wounds from the claws, and soon healed, but she remained perpetually scarred from the pointed nails and teeth of the lion]". Despite her injuries, it appears that she healed, and continued to have children after her horrible attack.

What is the factual historical source regarding her facial injuries or that she had to cover her face for the rest of her life?

I suppose it derives from "La Vieja del Concilio", a local legend from El Valle de Guadalupe, formerly La Venta de los Casillas and before that, simply La Hacienda de la Venta, jur. de Jalostotitlán, precisely the property where Ana González Florida II was attacked. Thanks to Rick Rodriguez, Cronista de El Valle de Guadalupe, for initially bringing this to our attention.

So separating truth from legend...the first account certainly seems more factual, providing a detailed version of the events. It also points to her personality of helping out her unnamed black slave who was bitten by a snake, bringing flowers from her San Juan altar and rosemary to heal the bite. Could this slave be Pedro de Moya whom she sets free in her Testamento? Certainly sounds like a caring woman of faith, not a cruel woman who assaulted delegations and transporters with a band of thieves. It is possible that due to her prominence and wealth, she was envied and people started rumors about her because, since 1666, she was a widow and dressed in black and certainly must have worn a black shawl over her head, perhaps from mourning her husband or to hide some of her near facial scars, maybe. Ignorant superstitious people that resided in the region and who knew “about” her and her story, further extended their enviuos rumors claiming that her roaming spirit terrorized the area and controlled wild animals. Thus “La Llorona de Los Altos”...fascinating story indeed.

In summary, Ana González Florida died a rich woman, possessing much property, money, and livestock, enough to bequeath unto two of her sons, Juan and Melchor González de Hermosillo, three separate Cofradías, and the Santuario de la Virgen de San Juan de los Lagos. Our role here as historians is to analyze as many sources as possible, and from all the various perspectives, a singular truth gradually comes into focus.

Steven Francisco Hernández López

the description of Ana Florida iI Gonzalez from family stories that are handed down state that she was a tall light skinned woman, that she stood up very straight and was a beauty. That she was physically imposing. Her beauty was so well known that if people heard she was coming they would stop, put everything aside, and wait to for a chance to see her. That all changed after the lion attack. People still wanted to see her but she wore a veil. It was said that people that did catch a glimpse of her scars saw something on her cheek, but there was never a clear indication of the size of the scars after the wounds healed since she tried to cover up.

One of Rick Ridriguez's sources is the research compiled by Doctor Rito Romo Franco. I grew up hearing the stories directly from my tio Rito. He was not the first family historian/ genealogist. My tio Rito received much of his earlier education from his uncle, Juan Franco who was a great educator who went around educating many people who lived in the ranches surrounding el Valle De Guadalupe. It was because of Juan Franco that the area surrounding the Valle de Guadalupe was known for having a much higher percentage of "rancheros" being able to read and write than most similar populations. Juan Franco helped prepare my tio Rito for medical school and my tio Melquiades Perez Franco for law school.

My tio Rito was also well aware of the family saying, somos Catolicos pero antes eramos de otra religion. That is not verbatim, I need to ask my older sister for the exact words. My tio Rito kept many family stories alive by handing them down to family just as they had been handed down to him. He would write down many of his stories on little cards and was able to quickly access whatever card had the information you would ask him about. Not all of his written records have survived but many have. And the family remembers many of his stories.

PostScript

I asked my oldest sister and she says that even though the meaning of "somos Catholicos pero antes eramos de otra religion" is what was meant, but that the actual saying was ""somos Christianos pero uvo un tiempo que no". She says that she does not recall the use of the word religion and that there seemed to be a pact in the family to not speak of the previous religion, though she says that they would talk of the traditions so it was obvious what religion it was. Her words were "primero por convenencia y luego por conviction"

Thanks so much Manny!!

she states she is 30 years old (1702) so I can look for her baptism and see if there is any more info given for gomes. Hopefully it is more accurate than Joseph Vicente who states he is 38yo (43yo b. 1688)

I can look for more children and records and hopefully come up with something new.

Hi Manny,

I too descend from this couple through their son Simon Magdaleno m. Josefa Guzman and daughter Andrea Alvarez and her second husband Francisco de Chavez.

I also have read the Magdaleno genealogy listed in the genealogias.wordpress.com blog and just like you have not found any supporting record or source that confirms the information in the blog. I did add Diego (I) and Lorenza de Ovalle as (unconfirmed) parents of Diego m. Mariana de Aguirre since some of the daughters of Diego and Mariana used the Ovalle surname.

Thanks

Thanks, Austin,

I've left them in my tree unconfirmed, as well, and for the same reason.

I agree, Diego II is son of Diego I and Lorenza de Ovalle, for the reasons you mention. But is Diego I the son of Geronimo Magdaleno de Mendoza? Or his brother, as suggested in Moreno Garcia's book? In which case, Diego II took his orders (he could've left the Order - it'd have to be that way, since Mariana de Aguirre died a widow).

I still have Isabel de Soria, as well; perhaps Maria Cecilia Patino was Geronimo's 2nd wife. Until I learn otherwise, I'll have her tentatively as the mother of Francisca Magdaleno and Diego Magdaleno I.

This is my first line that I've researched in Valladolid/Morelias, and I'm impressed by the collection at FamilySearch. It helps that the Magdaleno's were so prominent, as well as active. I've found 20 instances of Francisco Magdaleno, acting as padrino or testigo, between 1595 and 1610, either with or without Elvira de Mendoza.

What I find uncanny is that the 1651 Prueba is wrong: we've all seen this before, in many dispensas - the memories of testigos can be fuzzy, and maybe these ones forgot a generation (if Francisco Magdaleno is even a Mejia Magdaleno, from Tordesillas). But for so many testigos to get it wrong? And on a Limpieza de Sangre, for joining such a prestigious order? Maybe the investigators "led" the testigos, showing them a diagram and asking them if they agreed? Who knows. Part of me thinks it was on purpose: perhaps his advocates doctored the limpieza, and said he descended from another branch of the family, to ensure Geronimo Magdaleno Salceda was accepted into the Order. Why? The only thing I can think of: Francisco Magdaleno or Elvira de Mendoza or Maria Cecilia Patino had Conversos in their lines, which would make Geronimo ineligible to join the Order. Pure conjecture, but it sounds cool!

Thanks again, and for your work, which I always reference to see if I'm going in the right direction!

Here’s more on Licenciado Gonzalo Magdaleno - he was the beneficiado of Aguacana (or Guacana) and Churumucho, from at least 1624 to 1644. His name disappears from the records around then, so he might have passed away. And he would use the surname "Magdaleno de Liebana," so he’s probably a son of Diego Magdaleno and Lorenza de Ovalle:

Morelia > Diócesis de Michoacán > Gobierno 1624-1669 > image 14 of 1236.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-19273-24149-43?cc=1883388&wc…

And as I mentioned, he was padrinos with Geronima de Mendoza for a child on 19 Feb 1607; he didn’t wear a title, so he hadn’t taken his vows yet, and was probably still a mozo. I place his birth in the early 1590s. If he is a son of Diego Magdaleno and Lorenza de Ovalle, that places their births around 1560-70, so Diego would be a brother of Geronimo Magdaleno and not his son, as the wordpress genealogy has him.

Moreno doesn’t name the wife of Diego Magdaleno de Mendoza (I’m sure Ibarrola does), but we can assume that she is Lorenza de Ovalle, since she is supposedly the mother of Juan de Liebana (a cleric) and Diego Magdaleno (who would marry Mariana de Aguirre). I still haven’t seen “Juan de Liebana” in the Morelia records, perhaps he presided in a different parish, or perhaps he and Gonzalo Magdaleno de Liebana are the same person?

Do the timelines fit?

Thanks,

Hi Manny

The early Patzcuaro records show a Gonzalo Fernandez Magdaleno, escribano publico, married to Maria Maldonado. I did not find any record that connects this Gonzalo Magdaleno to the Magdaleno's of Valladolid. Though, the baptism record for Gonzalo and Maria's daughter Marta is very interesting in that it lists the priest who performed tha baptism as fray Juan de Lievana "vicario que ala era del dicho convento [San Agustin]". Could this be the Juan de Lievana, son of Diego Magdaleno de Mendoza?

Hasto pronto.

Hello Austin,

That must be him and it would explain why he doesn’t appear in the Valladolid/Morelia archives of that period - he was in Patzcuaro.

Here’s another: 8 Dec 1625, Patzcuaro, Padre Maestro Fray Juan de Liebana de la Orden de San Agustin, presiding over the marriage of Miguel de Urria(?) and Maria de la Cerna:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18745-47661-59?cc=1883388&wc…

DIEGO MAGDALENO Y MARIANA DE AGUIRRE

Again, I’m trying to fix a timeline on this couple. The 1679 Jalostotitan Padron has them living with one other person, Alonso de Aguirre (does anyone know who he is?); none of their known children are listed, so, Diego & Mariana were either newlyweds, or the children had already moved out. I think the former, since it fits better into the timelines of their children, who would then all be born after 1679, placing the marriage of Diego & Mariana around 1678-79.

What’s your opinion in regards? (that is an open question to the community)

I was going through the early Jalostotitlan defunciones and came upon a couple of records regarding a Diego Magdaleno, living in San Juan in the late-1660s:

18 Jan 1668, Jalostotitlan: Angel/San Juan (…) murió un niño, hijo de Diego Magdaleno.

And 16 days later:

Both are on img31R:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18450-50786-12?cc=1874591&wc…

The first doesn’t give the mother’s name, and the second doesn’t say how she died, but my guess is, Juana de la Trinidad & Diego Magdaleno were newlyweds, and she tragically miscarried their first child, and died in her parents’ home some 2 weeks later. Is it possible that this Diego Magdaleno is the same who married Mariana de Aguirre? The timelines & locations fit. This would place his possible birth age 10 years earlier than I thought.

Hola Austin,

A few more pieces to add to the puzzle:

From around 1604-1607, Francisco Madaleno (how they spelt their name) was Mayordomo de la Fabrica y Hospital de la Catedral de Valladolid, and his name can be found on several documents throughout those years. Here’s his signature: IMG623R
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18784-19753-46?cc=1883388&wc…

According to PARES-AGIS, Gonzalo Fernandez Magdaleno was named escribano publico of Patzcuaro 06 Apr 1588, replacing Juan Fernandez Magdaleno, who had resigned. Probably his brother. The documents aren’t digitized.

The ledger of the Cofradia del Rosario, 21 Aug 1593, has Francisco Madaleno, Elvira de Mendoza and their children paying their dues: Francisco is listed as FRANCISCO HERNANDEZ MADALENO, definitely linking him to Gonzalo and Juan: IMG612L
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18784-17892-92?cc=1883388&wc…

So, it’s not MEJIA Madaleno, it’s FERNANDEZ Madaleno. Either Francisco and Gonzalo are brothers, or Gonzalo's his son. What year was Gonzalo Fernandez Magdaleno's child born?

The next image 613L has a Diego Madaleno and his wife, Ana Gutierrez de Osuana?:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18784-17893-93?cc=1883388&wc…

Argh. “Diego Madaleno” is like “John Smith” in colonial Michoacan! Since they don’t mention “sus hijos,” they were probably a young couple.

I’ve also located Fray Diego Madaleno, the other son of Diego Madaleno de Mendoza and brother of Ldo. Juan de Liebana, who also became an Augustin. This is from 1607, he was Procurador of the Convento de San Agustin:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18870-66743-66?cc=1883388&wc…

And here are the minutes from a cofradia election, with the signature of Geronimo Madaleno de Mendoza, IMG9R
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-19301-29982-23?cc=1883388&wc…

TORRES DE TREMIÑO

According to her Bienes de Difuntos, Elvira de Mendoza was married first to Juan de Torres Tremiño; I’ve seen a Juan de Torres in early Valladolid archives, I wonder if he’s the same person? And there has to be a link with Alcaide Diego de Velasco.

I guess my eyes were tired when I looked at it, but img613L says Diego Madaleno and his wife Ana Gutierrez de Liebana, which makes her the obvious mother of Fray’s Juan de Lievana and Diego Madaleno, and more than likely, Ldo. Gonzalo Madaleno de Lievana.

Hi Manny

Thanks for the information.

Regarding the family of Gonzalo Madaleno and Maria Maldonado, I found the following baptism records in the Patzcuaro records:

You're welcome, Austin, and thank you. Those dates would make Gonzalo Fernandez Magdaleno a contemporary of Regidor Geronimo Madaleno, and if that cofradia ledger wasn't a notary's mistake, perhaps his brother.

I was reading through the Wikipedia entry for “Casta”:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casta#Purity_of_Blood_and_the_Evolution_of…

“Spaniards became obsessed with lineage, particularly since evidence of lack of purity of blood had consequences for marriage, eligibility for office, entrance into the priesthood, and emigration to Spain's overseas territories. The necessity to produce genealogical records to prove one's pure ancestry gave rise to a trade in the creation of false genealogies.”
Martinez, Genealogical Fictions, p. 266-67.

Wow. So, the need for doctored genealogies was great enough to create a trade. In light of the fact that Regidor Geronimo Magdaleno was the son of Francisco Magdaleno and Elvira de Mendoza, I’d say Geronimo Magdaleno Sauceda’s Limpieza de Sangre is a forgery, and a very elaborate one, at that. Have any of you read it? It’s pages & pages of numerous testigos - clerics, knights, officials, and all of them giving the Mejia-Magdaleno Escudero pedigree. I wonder if the Sauceda y Andrade lines are doctored, as well?

This stresses the importance of verifying and verifying and verifying.

This also tells us that either Francisco Magdaleno or Elvira de Mendoza likely had Conversos in their lines, as did Maria Cecilia Patiño, since she is also excluded.

Food for thought.

Austin,

This newly in from an NR thread on Juan Gonzalez de Hermosillo:
http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/21790?page=3

At PARES, look for the 1607 concesion de oficio for FRANCISCO HERMOSILLO, it names him as the son of Juan Gonzalez de Hermosillo and Ana Rodriguez, his paternal grandparents as Gonzalo Garcia de Hermosillo and Leonor Sanchez de Porras, and maternals, Gonzalo Magdaleno and Maria Hernandez.

Gonzalo Magdaleno and Maria Hernandez are of particular interest to this thread, with possible links to Gonzalo Fernandez Magdaleno (and perhaps Juan Fernandez Magdaleno and Francisco Fernandez Magdaleno).

Hola primos,

Diego Magdaleno and Mariana de Aguirre appear in the 1672 & 1673 padrones for Jalostotitlan, living in San Juan de Lagos, on the estancia of Nicolas de Aguirre and Andrea Alvarez; on both entries, Mariana is listed as "Mariana de Mendoza." Source: "Jalostotitlan Padrones Parroquiales, Vol II" by Sergio Gutierrez.

They appear again in the 1679 padron, but now they're on their own rancho; Mariana is listed as "Mariana de Aguirre," and there is a child named Alonso de Aguirre living with them. It does not explain his relationship, only that he had confessed (age 5 and up), but not received communion (age 8 and up). That'd place his birth year around 1673-1674.

Like many of us who descend from this couple, I suspect that Mariana de Aguirre is the daughter of Nicolas de Aguirre and Andrea Alvarez, in light of the surnames associated with her - Aguirre, Alvarez, Mendoza, which are all surnames associated with Nicolas de Aguirre and Andrea Alvarez. The fact that she and Diego are living in their home is a good indication that she is their daughter. Diego & Mariana's entry in the 1679 Padron is located right between those of Nicolas de Aguirre and of his sister, Ana de Mendoza, suggesting that their rancho was located on Los Aguirre.

From the timeline I've worked out for this family group, Diego Magdaleno and Mariana de Aguirre's children would have been born between 1680 and 1700; the timeline set out by these padrones can work within that time frame. I'd venture to say Diego and Mariana were newlyweds in 1672, since they were still living with her parents, and that Mariana was likely 14-16 years old, placing her birth around 1656-1658. This would place her at just over 40 in 1700, working well into her baby-making clock.

Though these padrones don't confirm that she is the daughter of Nicolas de Aguirre and Andrea Alvarez, they do move her from "possibly" to "more than likely." And they establish that Diego Magdaleno was living in San Juan de Lagos by 1672, and that he and Mariana de Aguirre were already married, and that none of their known children had been born yet.

While searching the burials in San Juan de Lagos, I found something of interest: here's a burial record for an "Angel," an unnamed child of Diego Magdaleno and an unnamed mother, dated 16 Jan 1668, Jalostotitlan (right image, 2nd entry): https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18450-50786-12?cc=1874591&wc…

The last entry on the same page is for Juana de la Trinidad, Espanola, wife of Diego Magdaleno, buried on the 03 Feb 1668. She left no will, as she "still lived with her parents." At first glance, it's obviously a childbirth gone bad, and child and mother died, leaving Diego Magdaleno a widower. Though we don't know if this is the same Diego Magdaleno who married Mariana de Aguirre, he still fits within the timeline & location, so Mariana de Aguirre could have been a 2nd matrimony.

Does this work with what you have? And do any of you have documents to support this?

Gracias y saludos!

Hola Paco,

Thank you for the detailed information - there were a couple I didn't have. I'm really fascinated by the "de Don Diego" surname; I haven't tracked that line, and it's an interesting clue - great work. Diego Magdaleno-Ovalle, who was married to Mariana de Aguirre, is always refered to as "D. Diego Magdaleno" in the few partidas and padrones I've seen, so he's the obvious source for that surname. And thank you for your kind words! The sentiment is mutual!

Hola Emilie:

I'm not sure if Micaela de Aguirre, who was married to Juan Diego Magdaleno, and Mariana de Aguirre, who was married to Don Diego Magdaleno, are the same couple; I thought this might be the case, but according to other records I've seen, there are some conflicts. I believe Micaela was the daughter of Alonso Martin Limon-Sayas and Ana de [Aguirre] Mendoza; she appears living on then-widowed Ana de Mendoza's estancia, in the 1679 Jalostotitlan padron. I think Micaela [Limon] de Aguirre and Mariana de Aguirre-Mendoza would be 1st-cousins (through 2 lines), and I'm not sure how Juan Diego Magdaleno fits into the picture; from timelines I've constructed, he appears to be younger than Don Diego Magdaleno-Ovalle, by at least one generation. He might be an hijo natural or a son from a previous marriage. I still need to review my notes.

MARTIN DE AGUIRRE & LEONOR DE MENDOZA

Here's what I have for the family group of Martin de Aguirre & Leonor de Mendoza (according to Gonzalez-Leal in "Retonos," Leonor de Mendoza was the daughter of Alvaro de Ornelas and Ysabel Sanchez de Mendoza; Ysabel Sanchez de Mendoza was the daughter of Toribio Hernandez de Arellano and Ysabel de Mendoza). Birth years are approximates, taken from the 1649 & 1650 padrones for San Juan de Lagos/Jalostotitlan:

1. Nicolas de Aguirre, b. 1624, m. Andrea Alvarez y Martin Limon-Sayas.
2. Martin de Aguirre, b. 1627
3. Ana de Mendoza, b. 1629, m. Alonso Martin Limon-Sayas
4. Leonor de Aguirre, b. 1631
5. Luisa de Mendoza, b. 1633
6. Maria de Mendoza, b. 1635
7. Juana de Aguirre, b. 1636
8. Salvador de Aguirre, b. 1641
9. Nicolas de Aguirre, b. 1646

ALONSO [MARTIN] LIMON AND MARIA DE SAYAS (OR ZAYAS)

I have very little information on this line. This family appears to have lived in Santa Maria de los Lagos, though both Alonso Martin Limon (son) and Andrea Alvarez (who married siblings), would both appear in the San Juan padrones, living on Puesto de los Aguirre:

1. Miguel Limon-Sayas, ca 1631, m. Juana de Ortis
2. Alonso Martin Limon, ca 1633, m. Ana de (Aguirre) Mendoza
3. Andrea Alvarez, ca 1635, m. Nicolas de Aguirre-Mendoza
4. Magdalena Limon, b. 22 Jul 1639, Lagos, Jal.

As far as I can tell, these 2 lines would be the sources for the surnames: Aguirre, Mendoza, [Martin] Limon, Alvarez and Sayas (or Zayas).

Paco: I'm curious what your sources are, for "Perez de Aguirre" and "Alvarez Tostado." Are those from Holcombe? I haven't seen those surnames associated with these family groups, and they're interesting leads.

Gracias y saludos!
Manny Diez Hermosillo

No...thank you (as in your work on the Hermosillos de Montesa)!! All I can say is consult the original sources I have cited with Web sources, and really look at the troncos and other genealogical data. That's where the real goodies are located. In more than one source I have seen Nicolás de Aguirre mentioned as Nicolás Pérez de Aguirre (see the details of this one here https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18411-65664-27?cc=1874591&wc… ), and his wife María Andrea Alvarez with the full surname Alvarez Tostado.

I frankly do not know where Nicolás got the "Pérez" nor where María Andrea Alvarez got the "Tostado" from, but they are obvious indicators that these were actual surnames still hidden deeper within the ancestries of their families. In other words, mysteries that have yet to reveal their hidden secrets.

Take the surname Ovalle. Diego Magdaleno and Mariana de Aguirre had a daughter called Manuela, who preferred the surnames Oballe (Ovalle), Magdaleno, and Aguirre. Ovalle is obviously a reference to Lorenza de Ovalle, mother of Diego Magdaleno. She was still referred to as Manuela de Oballe, in the 1740s and 1750s when her children were getting married in San Juan de los Lagos.

Careful not to mix up the names...so close attention. Mariana de Aguirre (married to Diego Magdaleno) had a sister named Rosa de Aguirre, bc 1670 (married to Eugenio Guzmán y Prado, b 1666, h.l de Melchor Guzmán y Prado & Jacinta Guerrero-Gutiérrez de Valdivia).

Diego Magdaleno and Mariana Aguirre, had a son named Juan Francisco Xavier Magdaleno de Don Diego, born ca. 1673 (aka Juan Magdaleno or Juan de Don Diego) married to Micaela Sánchez de Mendoza y Limón (aka Micaela de Mendoza, Micaela Limón, Micaela Sánchez), daughter of Blas Sánchez de Lara y Mendoza (Blas Sánchez de Mendoza) and María Martín-Limón de Zayas y Ortega (María Limón or María de Zayas).

The names Juan, Diego, Andrea, María, Rosa, etc., pop up frequently in these ancestries, so one has to be careful identifying the correct ones. Even more diligent one has to be, when there are mistakes in the original sources.

And regarding María Andrea Alvarez "Tostado"...I am not thoroughly convinced about her parentage. Not quite "sold" on the "official story", if there really is one. Still working on that little root-branch of the family tree.

Thanks for the additional data...but precisely upon further researching these specific families to provide an update response, I discovered that I was missing several children and other more precise bits of data on each of them, in particular death records. And not just the death records provided just above, which you have posted on your great website, Sr. Agustin Perez. Just to mention two highly relevant individuals to this discussion, I located your family entries for my 5th-great-grandmother, María Rosalía de la Luz Pedroza [http://www.wikitree.com/genealogy/Pedroza-Family-Tree-31]...we are both descendants of José Dionisio Guadalupe de Pedroza and María Salomé López...and my 7th-great-grandmother, Rita Josefa de Chávez [http://www.wikitree.com/genealogy/de%20Ch%C3%A1vez-Family-Tree-107], to name a few. Very nice, well documented with sources.

I began analyzing the first San Juan de los Lagos death records and have located many others not listed above. In a few days I will be finished with the whole thing and posting relevant entries as well as additional data. I think you will all be pleasantly delighted.

Hola primos,

Here’s an interesting piece of the Aguirre puzzle: I was sifting through early San Luis Potosi baptisms (which aren’t indexed), and I found Martin de Aguirre and Leonor de ORNELAS baptizing a daughter I had no record of: Francisca, baptized 19 Apr 1620 (top right):
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1951-20421-26246-39?cc=1860864…

Francisca doesn’t appear living with Martin & Leonor in any of the padrones, but she might have already married by then.

This places Martin Aguirre & Leonor Mendoza in SLP in 1620; there are other Aguirre in the SLP archives, but I don’t know if and how they’re related.

Ooh very nice Manny!! Great find!! Muy bien!!

This indeed grounds this couple chronologically, which places their marriage ca. 1619 or before, perhaps right there in San Luis Potosí. Are there marriages for San Luis Potosí during this time? Maybe not microfilmed (?) or archived somewhere else??

As I do for all actas and sources, I transcribed it. So here you go:

Acta bautismal de Francisca de Aguirre y Ornelas - 19 Febrero 1620, San Luis Potosí, S.L.P.

[Foja 79 frente] "1620 a.s

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1951-20421-26246-39?cc=1860864…

Interesting to note are the padrinos, Miguel Márquez y Catalina Sánchez - relationship unknown. Let us not immediately assume they were married, so who knows. And hmmmh...Márquez!?!? Francisca's mother, Leonor de Ornelas y Mendoza had a sister named María de Ornelas y Mendoza, who was married to Joseph Márquez. They baptized a child on 6 May 1617 in San Luis Potosí, named Diego Márquez, and his padrinos were Juan de Olivares y Anna de Mendoza. Assuming Miguel Márquez and Joseph Márquez were closely related begs the question...Exactly how? Maybe brothers or cousins. This might help shed some light on the Márquez genealogy.

There may also be other children and relatives of Martín de Aguirre “el Viejo” y Leonor de Ornelas y Mendoza in the San Luis Potosí archive...more Aguirre, Márquez, Ornelas, or Mendoza people. Does anyone know if the early San Luis Potosí testamentos are available online?

The Francisca de Aguirre y Ornelas in the baptismal record later does not appear in the 1649 padron...she may have died before 1649 or indeed have gotten married.

Again...BUEN TRABAJO!!!

As Mariano González-Leal mentioned in his chapter on the Aguirre surname (Retoños, Tomo II, pp. 89-102) there are many Aguirre lines. I have not researched this family, but when Manny mentioned San Luis Potosi I decided to check my notes:

Catalina de Aguirre vda Gonzalo Patiño.
Natural de Zacatecas. HL Juan de Aguirre+ y Ana Ramírez+.
Gave dote for dtr María de Aguirre cc Julian Lopes.
Mentions --s de Vargas Machuca mi ahijada.
Children:

This was extracted from the original protocolos in SLP. Section A3, 1643, 4 en 1643 to 10 ju 1643, p.42. Ten years later we meet up with Catalina in the SLP protocolos of Pedro de Avalos, Section A3, 1653, 28 jul 1653:

Yo Catalina de Aguirre vda de (1)Gonzalo Patiño y (2) Juan Dias. Both deceased.

I’ve typed this pretty much as I scribbled. English and Spanish, whichever was easier at the moment. Those were heady days. I was thrilled to be in the archives and wrote like lightning during my limited time.

This is the IM for Sebastian Vasquez de Lara and Luisa de Liebana, 18 Mar 1658. This is Sebastian's IM, and it was done in Villa de Lagos, so there's no info on Luisa de Liebana, other than she was a resident of Tangaciquaro, in provincia de Michoacan. It's the only document that I have found that names Diego Magdaleno cc Lorensa de Liebana:

Hi Danny,

I reference that book and discredit the Magdaleno entry at the beginning of this thread. The Magdaleno genealogy given in that book is incorrect, and is based on a false limpieza de sangre, carried out in 1651. You can read my argument at the beginning of the thread.

Thanks,

Hi Danny,

No worry - the rest of the book is probably accurate, it’s just that one entry, and like I said, it was based on a limpieza de sangre, written 350+ years ago. There was no reason to think that the limpieza was false, until I noticed that it contradicted what I was seeing in the Morelia de Mich archives, and at PARES-AGIS.

Read my initial post (it’s in English, too), I explain my argument, it’s really fascinating. It reminds us that we have to continue verifying our work - and that of others.

Keep up the great work!

Hola primos,

Working on the family group of Diego Magdaleno and Lorensa de Oballe y Liebana:

This is the 18 Mar 1658 IM for Luisa de Liebana to Sebastian Vasquez de Lara. She’s daughter of Diego Magdaleno and Lorensa de Liebana:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-KGPP?i=213&wc=3NTD-BZ3

This is the 19 Feb 1661 IM for Maria de Oballe, for her marriage to Juan de Chavez. She’s daughter of Diego Magdaleno and Lorensa de Oballe, Her brother, Tomas Magdaleno, acts as her guardian.
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-5K9D-MR?i=213&wc=3NY4-GP8

DIEGO MAGDALANO DE LIEBANA

Here’s Diego Magdaleno de Liebana, as a testigo on 30 Oct 1661, in Zacatula, Gro, where he’s Teniente de Alcalde Mayor. He gives his age as 46 poco mas o menos, placing his birth around 1615. The contrayentes are Francisco Martin de Ynojosa and Beatriz Naselo, daughter of Nicolas de Avila Calderon and Beatriz Naselo. Diego Magdaleno de Liebana says he’s married to the bride’s sister:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-5K9X-RT?i=428&wc=3NY4-GP8

This is a notificacion, dated 26 May 1679, which names Diego Magdaleno de Liebana as administrador de la Hacienda del Rosario, I suppose in Coahuayutla, Gro, since that’s where he’s living:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939L-8C9M-9M?i=559&wc=3NTX-7M3

On 30 May 1679, Hacienda del Rosario, Diego Magdaleno de Liebana explains how he received a deposit:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939L-8CBL-B?i=577&wc=3NTX-7M3

Here is Diego Magdaleno de Liebana, as Teniente de la Villa de Zacatula, certifying the 1683 padron, on 26 Apr 1683:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939L-D9KD-F?i=1005&wc=3JMF-SPD

I imagine this Diego Magdaleno de Liebana is son of Diego Magdaleno and Lorensa de Liebana, for obvious reasons. From given genealogies, he would be the same who married Mariana de Aguirre, and appearing in the Jalos padrones, between 1672 and Apr 1679, and who was known as Don Diego Magdaleno. It’s possible he’s the same Diego Magdaleno, and Mariana de Aguirre is his second wife, the timeline allows it; he would be around 57, when he married Mariana de Aguirre, and in his mid-70’s, when their last child is born. But how can he be a resident in Jalos in Apr 1679, and a resident in Coahuayutla, Gro, one month later, in May 1679, which is 280+ miles away? So, I’m having my doubts that Diego Magdaleno de Liebana and Don Diego Magdaleno are the same person. From their timelines, It’s just as likely that they are father and son. Has anyone seen any documentation that Don Diego Magdaleno cc Mariana de Aguirre was son of Diego Magdaleno and Lorensa de Liebana? Then if he is, who is this Diego Magdaleno de Liebana?

Saludos!

Hi Manny,

I think we all just assumed Diego Magdaleno married to Mariana de Aguirre was the son of Diego Magdaleno and Lorenza de Liebana. But, since Diego Magdaleno and Mariana de Aguirre are at the top of the tronco on all the dispensas, there's no way to know for sure without more documentation.

Hola prim@s,

It’s easy to presume that Don Diego Magdaleno is son of Diego Magdaleno cc Lorensa de Oballe y Liebana, since his children used “Oballe,” and he even had a daughter named Lorensa de Oballe. But that just proves that he descends from them; from his timeline, he could be their grandson. Hopefully, something will turn up!

What we do know about Diego Magdaleno cc Lorensa de Oballe y Liebana, is that they were residents of Tangancicuaro, which is just outside of Zamora, Mich. And we have them with 3 confirmed children: Tomas Magdaleno, Luisa de Liebana and Maria de Oballe. This Diego Magdaleno is supposedly the son of Geronimo Magdaleno de Mendoza and Cecilia Patiño de Herrera (though I’ve seen no documentation supporting this…).

These are from the Morelia, Mich tax archives. From the timeline, this is either Diego Magdaleno cc Lorensa de Oballe, or Diego Magdaleno de Liebana ("DML"), or both. The 1636 & 1637 entries are for Tlazazalca & Zamora (Tangancicuaro is just outside of Zamora, and south of Tlazazalca). The 1643 is for Zacatula, where we know DML was teniente de Alcalde Mayor (and which is 173 miles south of Tangancicuaro):

1636 Diezmos Tlazazalca y Zamora: Diego Magdaleno 2f de trigo
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-BJ95-SY?i=39&wc=3NYP-K6D
1637 Diezmos, Tlazazalca y Zamora: Diego Magdaleno 4f de trigo, 2f de maiz
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-BJ95-YB?i=56&wc=3NYP-K6D
1643 Diezmos, Zacatula: Diego Magdaleno 1 de potros, 1/2f de maiz
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-RZV5-D?i=8&wc=3NYL-3TG

DIEGO MAGDALENO DE LIEBANA

This is Diego Magdaleno de Liebana, in the 1680 padron for Zacatula. He’s listed as a widower; living with him are Maria de Avila and her husband, Juan de la Vega Maldonado; Beatriz de Avila doncella, Diego Magdaleno “El Moso,” Nicolas Magdaleno “El Moso,” and Laureano, Antonio and Feliz. Maria and Beatriz de Avila are likely his daughters, taking their surname from their deceased mother, who we now know was daughter of Nicolas de Avila Calderon and Beatriz Nacelo.
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939L-8C99-TD?i=413&wc=3JM7-C6D

This is from the 1684 Padron for Zacatula, Hacienda del Rosario; listed amongst the solteros are Diego Magdaleno, y “otro” Diego Magdaleno. One of them is likely “El Moso,” listed in the 1680 padron:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939L-DX92-H3?i=169&wc=3JMN-GP8

It would be logical that Diego Magdaleno “El Moso” is son of DML. Seeing how there was a Nicolas Magdaleno “El Moso,” would imply that there was a Nicolas Magdaleno “El Viejo.” I’ve seen no record of a Nicolas Magdaleno, as of yet, but he could be a brother or an uncle of DML. Nicolas “El Moso” might be his son, or a son of DML, named in his honor.

I don’t think Diego Magdaleno de Liebana, nor Diego Magdaleno “El Moso,” nor the “otro” Diego Magdaleno, are Don Diego Magdaleno cc Mariana de Aguirre, since these two appear in the 1672, 1673 and 1679 padrones for Jalostotitlan.

As I was saying, it would make sense that Diego Magdaleno de Liebana is son of Diego Magdaleno cc Lorensa de Oballe y Liebana, since he uses their surnames. Another possible source of the ”Magdaleno de Liebana” surname are Diego Magdaleno de Mendoza and Ana Gutierrez de Liebana, who was son of Francisco Magdaleno and Elvira de Mendoza, and brother of Geronimo Magdaleno de Mendoza. As far as I know, they had only 3 sons, all who became clerics: Fray Juan de Liebana, Fray Diego Madaleno and Beneficiado Gonzalo Magdaleno de Liebana. It’s possible that they had other children.

There were just so many “Diego Magdaleno’s,” and with so many archives, being un-indexed, it’s hard to track them! I have not been able to locate Zacatula, nor its parish archives. Does anyone know where they are? As far as I can tell, Zacatula is now called La Union, and is in the state of Guerrero. Coahuayutla is not far. The archives in La Union don’t go back very far, so those pueblos must’ve been administered by a neighboring parish during the 1600’s. Anyone?
Gracias y Saludos!

Hola prim@s,

This is the capellania founded by Diego Magdaleno cc Ana Gutierrez de Liebana, son of Francisco Magdaleno and Elvira de Mendoza, dated 14 Apr 1609, Valladolid, Mich. It's first patron is his oldest son, Padre Gonzalo Magdaleno de Liebana. He also mentions a Luis Magdaleno, though there is no mention of Fray Juan de Liebana or Fray Diego Madaleno, who are his known sons (perhaps he is one of them?). Elvira de Mendoza and Regidor Geronimo Magdaleno de Mendoza appear on image451:

TOMAS MADALENO

Tomas Madaleno (how he signed his name) was son of Diego Magdaleno and Leonor de Oballe y Liebana. He was married to Juana de Chavez, Mestiza, and they had a daughter named Antonia Magdaleno. Antonia Magdaleno married Baltasar Rodriguez, here is their IM, Jun 1670, Penjamo. Tomas Magdaleno appears as Antonia's guardian on img754:

There was a question on another genealogy site regarding a baptism record. In the margin under the child's name was, C.A. The record read: Ynft ciud. Agr.

Jose Antonio Castellanos & Maria Luisa Navarro

Hello, I am interested in the couple Jose Antonio Castellanos & Maria Luisa Navarro. They are my fifth great-grandparents and I am having trouble finding any information on them. M.

Hi Vanessa,

I'm curious if you might have your ancestry researched published anywhere online? My mom's ancestors (esp her father - Jose S. Navarro) are a very elusive branch of the family. I only have scant info on him from the short period while he lived in California. Supposedly he was born in Jalisco, purportedly in Guadalajarra, but I've had no success finding anything on him in Mexico.

It is probably grasping at straws, but I'd be curious to see descendants of your Navarro line (and Padilla --his mother was Maria Luisa Padilla). I realize these are all common names, but your message piqued my curiousity.

Let me know if you do have a gedcom or a tree in some other format online that I could take a peek at. Thanks!

Thank you, Chris. I am trying to tie all this information together. I just wish their was a child baptism record with Luisa Navarro and grandparents so I could try and tie it to the rest of the documents. I haven't seen any connection to Tepatitlán de Morelos with this family but I will keep looking.

I've ruled out Luisa also being named Magdalena since her daughter Magdalena's marriage record shows that she was only 14 when she was married so she couldn't have been born in 1784. That would have made her well into her 40s when she was married. I am guessing that this could potentially be Antonio's parents and he may have named his daughter after his mother. I am going through the Bautismos 1810-1822 of Ocotlan page by page to see if I can find what I'm looking for.

Comment

Hi Vanessa,

I have some family in Ocotlan too and haven't found anything. It's possible those records haven't been indexed. You may have to just go through the bautismos and matrimonios one by one until you find something.

Paige

Comment

I totally agree Paige. Anytime I try to look things up for Ocotlan in Family Search, I hardly ever see any information that pops-up from Ocotlan. I am going day-by-day with this since I have 500+ pages to go through on a computer screen. I felt compelled to almost index the entire thing myself on an Excel sheet since I have to go through all of them anyway, but my work schedule doesn't allow me to do so.

Comment

Hello

If you go to Family Search and search the catalog (this is one of the drop down search menu options) for Ocotlan you can find out which films have been indexed/extracted. The baptisms and marriages have been extracted through the late 1800s.

For most areas in Mexico this usually means the early 1880s, with a few later. Some death records have been extracted, but this is not very common. I have not found any matrimonial investigations that have been extracted. Occasionally you will find a film that has not been extracted, which then means a page by page search.

From the catalog search you can get the film number. You can then search by this film number. Some searches by film number and first name can be fruitful. These searches can give a lot of results which can be further refined by using a date range in the search parameters.

Hopefully this will save you some unnecessary work.

Comment

Thank you, George. Yes, I have gone through the films in Family Search through the search function but I did not know you can see if a film has been cataloged. I just did so and it seems the particular film I am needing isn't cataloged as suspected.

I think I may have found who I am looking for but they have been given the wrong last name and there is not abuelos paternos/maternos listed so I will continue to search for a possible sibling page by page with the correct last names.

In regards to matrimonial investigations, are they at all beneficial? Every time I try to look through one all I see are words in Latin and don't understand much of it. What exactly are in those records?

Comment

Vanessa

I have used the Aguascalientes matrimonial investigations extensively. For marriages prior to about 1740 in Aguascalientes they give information that is generally not in the early marriage records: in the declaration of the bride and groom they give ethnicity, residence (sometimes place of birth), parent's names and/or prior spouse (sometimes when and where the prior spouse was buried), and age. Most of the time, the statements of the witnesses are standard language and add little. If a dispensation was granted, it may be there, but the details of consanguinity or affinity usually are not there. You need to go to the diocesan records for that.

For any given parish the format is relatively standard, so with a little practice you can get the essential information, even, as in my case, your Spanish is limited.

I have indexed the earliest Aguascalientes matrimonial investigations and they are posted her at NR in the reference materials section. After I posted the first index Family Search reposted the films, so the image numbers are off. However, with a little practice you can still find the documents without too much trouble - at least you don't have to look through lots of films as they are not in chronological order!

The Castellanos and Navarro families are linked from the 1600's. The Castellanos Navarro that you are talking about are most likely linked to the Castellanos and Navarros that intermarried in Tepatitlan, Jalisco. Your best bet is looking for a marriage dispensation since the Castellanos already had Navarro ancestors.

Good Luck,

Hello,
I was wondering if anyone could tell me if they know of this region?

I am continuing the search for my maternal 5th grandparents Jose Antonio Castellanos and Maria Luisa Navarro. I still haven't been able to find any of their children's birth records although I have discovered two new children Jose Cruz Castellanos and Maria Benita de la Trinidad (married German Perez).

I just located Jose Cruz' marriage record to Hermenegilda Diaz Macias/Muniz in Atotonilco de Alto.

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-X4SH-N5?i=189&wc=3J48-YWP%…

In the record it states "...case y vele infacia eclecie a Jose de la Cruz Castellanos soltero de veinte años originario de los Planes del Portillo jurisdicción de Santa Anna Acatlán, de donde paso a la Loma Larga de la de Ocotlán en edad de dos años y vivió hasta la de diez y ocho, en que paso al Rancho del Valle de la de esta, en que ha permanecido, hijo leg. de Jose Antonio Castellanos y de María Luiza Navarro..."

Can someone please tell me where Santa Anna Acatlan is? I haven't had much luck in Ocotlan and wanted to see if anyone has come across this jurisdiction. Any info would help immensely!

Thanks!

Joaquin Cervantes and Maria Alberta Duron

Hello Nuestros Ranchos forum,

i was wondering if anyone has any information on don Joaquin Cervantes and
doña Maria Alberta Duron. theyre probly born around 1750.

Comment

Hola Danny:

Using DNA for genealogy research

Many people have posted that they have tested their DNA for research into their genealogy. From what I’ve read on this forum many of them have not researched which DNA company to use.

Comments

Comment

Here I will break down what FTDNA, AncestryDNA, 23andme, FGC, Yseq.net can do and can't do and what kind of testing each company does.

1. Only FTDNA does Y-DNA STR testing and allows matching in it's large database which is the very best way to possibly find a recent common ancestor in the direct paternal line. At least 67 markers are needed to be sure the match is not a coincidence due to convergence. 111 markers are best though. Sometimes, but rarely, two people with a common ancestor in the past 500 years won't match at 37 markers but will match at 67 markers. So if a person is interested in the Y-DNA to possibly prove or disprove a common ancestor in the direct paternal line then the Y-DNA67 is the minimum test a person should get but they can start with a Y-DNA37 and upgrade later. There have already been a lot of people at FTDNA that have proven either common ancestry with their Y-DNA or proven that they are unique and do not match anyone.

2. Only FTDNA, Yseq.net and FGC do advanced Y-DNA SNP testing through SNP packs and/or Next Generation Sequencing. Y-DNA SNPs can rule out a common ancestor and also provide a high likelihood of a common ancestor if two people have an expensive BigY or FGC test. AncestryDNA does extremely limited Y-DNA SNP testing but the results aren't reported and they aren't reliable. 23andme SNP testing is very outdated. They don't even test the most common recent SNPs found in Mexico and Iberia. Two people with the same terminal SNP at 23andme can have a common ancestor from more than 5,000 years ago. So the Y-DNA SNP testing at 23andme is only good enough to possibly determine which SNP pack at FTDNA is needed to find the terminal SNP. Geno 2.0 does more advanced Y-DNA SNP testing than 23andme but it is not as advanced as the Y-DNA SNP testing at FTDNA and FGC and there are a lot of false positives in the test. Even Yseq.net does some SNP testing that Geno 2.0 does not do. If two people have had the exact same test and they have completely different terminal SNPs then that rules out a common ancestor even if there is an STR match at 67 markers. This is one reason why SNP testing is helpful. The other reason is because as Next Generation, SNP pack testing, and testing of ancient DNA remains have become more common certain terminal SNPs have shown to have been in certain regions far longer than thought and there is also a general region that those terminal SNPs originated in. So the terminal SNP is helpful up to a point.

3. Only FTDNA and FGC test the full mitochondrial DNA. FTDNA has the largest database of mtDNA testers and allows matching on the mutations of it's huge database and is cheaper than FGC. 23andme and Geno 2.0 test a lot of the mtDNA but not all of it and they do not do matching. The mtDNA mutates slower than the Y-DNA so it is not as useful to prove common ancestry but there are some cases where it has proven useful at FTDNA. See the ISOGG comparison chart - http://isogg.org/wiki/MtDNA_testing_comparison_chart

4. FTDNA, AncestryDNA, and 23andme do autosomal testing which is the first 22 chromosomes. The autosomal testing is used for possibly finding close relatives and cousins from any of your recent ancestors out to about 5 generations and also for providing an estimate of the ethnic composition that you have inherited from your parents. The further away the common ancestry the less reliable the closeness of the relation of autosomal matches. The common ancestry with a person deemed to be a 4th cousin could actually be from as far back as 8 or even 10 generations ago. This is due to how DNA recombines every generation where some DNA from ancestors is lost and some DNA from other ancestors is maintained for many more generations than average. There is also the problem that we don't have the DNA samples of our ancestors so that we can phase the DNA so the DNA markers are aligned correctly so that the matching isn't mistakenly using alleles from the wrong parent. This does happen. See https://segmentology.org/2015/10/02/anatomy-of-an-ibs-segment/ Each company has it's own database so if you want as many autosomal matches as possible then it is recommended that you get the autosomal DNA test with all three companies.

The overall ancestral origins or “ethnicity” from the autosomal test can vary greatly between companies. 23andme and me has shown to be the most consistent with well documented genealogies and not just for people from Mexico and Iberia but also for most Europeans. AncestryDNA comes in 2nd and FTDNA myOrigins is the least reliably and less consistently matches well documented genealogies. So if the ancestral origins or “ethnicity” is the most important to the tester then the 23andme Ancestry only test is the best one for that.

23andme has the medical or health SNPs included in their more expensive test but being positive for a medical related SNP isn't confirmation that you will have a health problem due to that.

Here is the unbiased ISOGG comparison chart which shows 23andme to have the best biogeographical ancestry analysis (ancestral origins or “ethnicity” calculator) which is also what most people including myself have experienced after comparing hundreds of test results - http://isogg.org/wiki/Autosomal_DNA_testing_comparison_chart

So as a summary, for Y-DNA matching the best option is FTDNA Y-DNA67 or Y-DNA37 then an upgrade if thought necessary, for Y-DNA SNPs get an SNP pack or BigY at FTDNA after the STR test at FTDNA, for mtDNA matching and true mtDNA subclade the best is the mtDNA FullSequence from FTDNA, for autosomal matching use all three companies, for the best ancestral origins or “ethnicity” use 23andme Ancestry only test. Any matching is dependent on who is in the database so if no relatives have tested then you won't have a match. The only way to determine what can be found in your specific case is to get a test. As the databases grow then the chances of finding a match increases so even if you don't have a match now you could in the future.

Hi Josie,

Welcome to the forum! I’m surprised no one has replied yet, since there are some who are actively researching the Plasencia, but they’re likely away for the holidays. You might want to check through the NuestroRanchos archives, you’ll find various threads on the Plasencia and your other lines, maybe you’ll find your ancestors.

I do have Plasencia in my lines, but way back, in my maternals, so my research hasn’t gone passed 1700. I do know that almost every family group had a son named Pedro Plasencia, which makes it difficult!

I did a quick check on your Francisco Xavier de Rubalcava and Maria Francisca Sanchez. If you don’t already have this, here’s the dispensation for their son, Marcelino de Rubalcava, for his marriage to Anastacia Plasencia, 14 Apr 1779, Yahualica. They are are 4/4 consanguinity, being great grandchildren of siblings Miguel and Maria Gutierrez de Hermosillo, who were children of Pedro Gutierrez de Hermosillo. This will get you back a few generations:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-6VCG-C?mode=g&i=587&cc=187…

Anastacia Plasencia had a sister named Ana Gertrudis Plasencia, who married Marcelino’s brother, Joseph Antonio Rubalcava. I haven’t pulled their marriage partida, but I’m sure it says they were dispensed at 4/4, too. The girls were daughters of Joaquin Plasencia and Maria Manuela Alvarez de la Cruz. Siblings marrying siblings, which was common with many of these families.

You’re exploring the right parishes - Cuquio, Yahualica, Nochistlan. You might want to check Tepatitlan, since many of these families lived there, too.

Saludos!

For the generations after 1857 have you looked at the civil records at Ancestry.com? While I have not looked at Teocaltiche specifically, the civil records have been indexed with linked images for many, if not all, communities. The birth and marriage records from Teocaltiche go to the 1920s or so, death records go later. My experience has been in Aguascalientes and some parts of Jalisco with some success. The records in the early years of civil registry can be incomplete, but improve with time, the later records being much better.

If you do not have an Ancestry subscription you can get to it at any LDS family history center. Many public libraries have a subscription as well.

As I'm sure you are aware, not all the church records have been extracted/indexed which makes research more tedious.

Best of luck,

George Fulton

welcome to the wonderful world of research. Frustration and joy in finding a record go hand in hand.
Some things come easily with Familysearch, others have to be done page by page.
Errors in surnames and given names happen often but I've found if more than one record shares a name I go with that one.
If a record has no date look at the record before and after then at least you will have the month and year.
Many times a record will be in the wrong section or year so be sure to check other records before and after it.
It takes time to learn the abbreviations.
The church kept track of nationalities but that stopped in the 1820's. Don't take the nationality as fact. I have a family with 5 children listed as Espanol, Indio, Mestiso and Mulato Libre. Don't eliminate a record because you have an Espanol family and you find an Yndio or Mulato record.
Donsella means unmarried or maiden.
I've been researching for 20 years and on occasion I find someone working in the same lines or area and we share research making for wonderful finds. I would also suggest you include your source for information because you may want to go back and read a record again. My Spanish was non-existent when I started so I made many mistakes but with time I've gone back and corrected them with shared records of others.
My research in Jalisco is Zapotlan el Grande and Tamazula. In Zacatecas it's Jerez and the surrounding towns, Tepetongo, Monte Escobedo and now after all these years I find many of them came from Colotlan, Jalisco. That find was with the sharing of another Nuestros Rancho's member Jose Carlos de Leon.
Don't give up but check other sources like Rootsweb.com that is free and Ancestry if you have a membership there
good luck in your search

Hola HDC,

Yes, I hate the “dicho dia mes y año” scribes, which requires flipping back the pages, until you can find the month & year. I usually curse when I see them!

I agree, there are a lot of irregularities with the church archives - and errors. I just attribute that to different notaries/scribes/parishes. I have marriage records for ancestors, in which the groom’s mother is placed where the bride’s name should be, and on others, where they give the incorrect names for one set of grandparents. For that reason, it is always best to verify with as much documentation as possible: I simultaneously track all family members in a given family group, since missing info for one sibling might appear on a record of another.

As far as info given, it changed over the years:
- Grandparents’ names don’t appear on baptism & other records until after 1800.
- On earlier marriage records, names of deceased parents are not given.
- On earlier records, surnames of lower-caste women are not given.

In some parishes, the names of the parents of the padrinos are given.

INDEXES

I’ll use the indexes, when I first start working on a line, to locate an ancestor. But there are many parishes that haven’t been indexed. I usually go through each roll of film, flipping through the images, until I locate a familiar name. The benefit of working this way, is I’m able to track my ancestors, when they’re padrinos or testigos on other records. FamilySearch just upgraded their viewers, that allow thumbnail or tiled views of the rolls of film, which is super helpful, as far as finding the ends & beginnings of books. THANK YOU LDS!

CASTAS

Castes vary, depending on location and era, and on the notary or authority documenting the event (who “eyeball” the individuals involved, to determine caste). The caste of each individual is given up to the time of independence (1820), and after that year, individuals are listed as “ciudadanos.” There are various website that give more info, but the primary castes are:

Español peninsular (Europeans born in Europe)
Español criollo (Spaniards born in America)
Mestizo (one Spanish parents, one Indian parent)
Indio (Indigenous)
Mulato Libre * (African Freeman; might have European ancestry)
Mulato Esclavo * (African Slave; might have European ancestry)
Negro Libre (African Freeman)
Negro Esclavo (African Slave)

* “Mulato” was sometimes interchangeable with “Negro,” as far as I can tell.

There are also “subcastes,” depending on the parents ethnicities, and the individual’s assimilation to Spanish/Catholic culture:

Morisco (one Spanish parent, one Mulato parent)
Coyote (one Mestizo parent, One Indio parent)
Lobo (one Indian parent, one Mulato parents)
Tresalbo (3/4 African, 1/4 non-African)

The caste system was an arbitrary and cruel system, but as a researcher, caste designation can help determine the identity of an individual.

EARLY COLONIAL TERMS

Here’s a glossary of Colonial Spanish Terms, which I reference quite a bit:
http://www.somosprimos.com/spanishterms/spanishterms.htm

OTHER TYPES OF DOCUMENTS

There are other types of documents, to help break down brick walls. You likely know of some of these, but for others:

Informacion Matrimonial (“IM”):
The Council of Trent mandated “marriage investigations," in the form of the “Informacion Matrimonial.” Bride & groom are required to present 3 witnesses to attest that they are eligible for marriage. Info given is age, casta, place of birth, current residence, and names of parents.

Dispensas:
Dispensations were given to couples who were related by consanguinity (by blood), or by affinity (by marriage, or an “illicit” relationship), by at least 4 degrees (3rd-cousins). This was to prevent inbreeding (and babies born with tails…). Info given is same as IM, also given is the relationship - family trees.

Padron:
A "padron" was a church census, periodically conducted in parishes. The majority of them only list individuals who have Confessed (age 5+) and received Communion (age 8+). These are super helpful for locating ancestors, and establishing family groups and relationships.

Confradias:
Most parishes had confraternities that helped with church services and did charity work. These can help locate ancestors, and establish family groups and relationships.

Land & Probate Records:
These are more difficult to find online. The LDS site gives access to notary records in the province of Michoacan (which also covers Guanajuato and San Luis Potosi), as well as San Luis Potosi. These archives are difficult to research, but they appear to be mostly in chronological order. I’ve located testamentos, court records (civil & criminal), land & mine registries, bills of sale, “cartas de dote” (dowries), contracts for apprentices, store inventories & diezmas (taxes & tributes), cattle brand registries, and even manumissions of slaves.

Ordenes:
Wealthier families were able to educate their children, some who joined the clergy. Candidates were required to provide their lineage, a “limpieza de sangre,” to prove that they didn’t descend from “Jews, Moors, or other heretics.” Ancestry is given, usually up the to grandparents, sometimes great-grandparents.

Also, check “Files” on the Nuestros Ranchos menu bar. There are many good resources and aids offered there.

I hope that helps!

Manny,
I am amazed at the quantity and quality of your response. Thank you so very much!
I will print this out and keep it as a Reference.
You obviously are quite an experienced researcher. I knew very little of what you have so generously shared with me.
Did you accumulate all this knowledge by experience, or did you have a guide to researching in Mexico?
You don't by chance have relatives in the Teocaltiche, Jalisco area? (That would be a god send.) I do know that most of my ancestors had the misfortune of being buried in pauper graves (limosnia), so I don't know how productive Ordenes and land records will be, still worth a shot.
I use the LDS Familysearch site exclusively, and plan to take a peek at the Informacion Martrimonial entries right now.
I wonder if I need to look them up by the date of the marriage or weeks ahead, as the couple/priest were required to post banns. I'll figure it out.
Once again, you are so kind to share your expertise.

Sincerely,
Elida Gonzalez Dobropolski

Thank you, Elida, that’s’ very kind of you. Nope, no guide books, most of what I know I learned from other NR members, either from collaborating with them, or from reading their threads in the archives. The rest of it, is figuring things out, as I go along.

Yes, the Informacion Matrimonial was done a couple of weeks before the wedding. The archives are in chronological order, for the most part, so start from you wedding date, and work backwards. Each IM is 2-3 images, so you can leap, or use the thumbnail view, to see where the next IM begins. Saves a lot of time.

I do have lines in Teocaltiche, my Gonzalez de Hermosillo’s lived there, from the 1640’s-on. My branch moved away around 1700, so I haven’t done much active research in that parish, after that year. How far back are you, and which families are you working on?

Manny,

I've been concentrating on finding individuals as opposed to casting a wide net and seeing what I get. For example, I would go through all the deaths in a given year and search for key surnames (Gonzalez, Tejeda, Aguilera; Moran..) and I came up with several family members. Now I'm trying to find a person in a given window for example, died on 26 August 1902 at age of 6 months, so I look back to Feb. 1901.

I'm stuck in the 1800's so I have no idea about relatives in the 1600 and 1700s. My information is on Familysearch.org, where I contacted a couple of people (primos) but they don't respond feeling perfectly content to merge information into their genealogies without the bother of dealing with distant family.

I use to romanticize my ancestors and now I'm starting to think a lot about that they were only human and since some of their decendant are real hijos de sus madre's, some of them were, too.

I'm also finding branches in Aguascalientes and Zacatecas. My one relative that is listed as Gonzalez Hermosillo is an error, the only time the name Hermosillo shows up is in the marriage record, the other records show the maternal surname as Moran.

I wanted to share a resource, Diccionario de Abreviaturas Novohispanas, but I don't know how to attach it. If you're not already using the site it's: http://www.iifilologicas.unam.mx
(I just found this and I'm not sure how accessible or useful it is.)

My apologies for my ramblings.

Elida

When I have a problem and my thinking is cloudy and overwhelmed then I cast a wide net.
I cast a wide net putting together every tiscareno on Familysearch I could find. I did not succeed. I then went on and concentrated on finding only grandparents of paternal side. I was lucky because of the civil records of San Luis that appeared in Ancestry.com (yes it may cost money but the information can be invaluable as in this case). I had search for more than 18 years. Of course nothing is that easy, it turns out my grandfather's name was guanajuato sometimes and peres other times because of the mistakes made in Villa de Reyes, SLP, Mexico. The records in Villa de Reyes are the worst I have ever encountered with mistakes on surnames. To say that my father has been known as Rodriguez Perez when it should have been Guanajuato. I then cast a wide net and searched for all guanajuatos and found a family that fit perfect except they were twins, both named Mateo. So once I searched tediously again for a record of marriage of mateos there were four marriages but to which one. The first marriages I could separate it was the second or third for one of them that has me overwhelmed and confused.

I was once again overwhelmed with this family and stepped away and went to the one really giving me a big problem. Maria Rosalia Lira (or Alvarado, or Dias) It dawned on me that her child Dorotea Contreras first child was born in Salinas, SLP and so they probably married in Salinas as it was after 1799 date the parish started. I found there marriage record in 1803 and it gave her mother as Maria Josepha Rosalia Lira and Originating from Camarillo. I now have to find where Camarillo is and hope that the records are not kept in two places like Charcas, SLP who also have Concepcion records mixed up as are the years.

Good luck hunting!

Manny,
Just reading about you did and still have to do made MY head hurt!

I believe It takes a special type of individual to research genealogy. Often, when I speak to other people, I get comments like, "I'm really not interested in the past."

In addition, to the Interest, tenacity and problem solving skills, it takes mental gymnastics to analize and synthesize simultaneously. Our version of Luminosity.

What would you suggest to do when there is no mention of a birth in parish or civil records?

Dear Pax,

I agree with your statement "It takes a special type of individual to research genealogy...In addition to the Interest, tenacity and problem solving skills, it takes mental gymnastics to analyze and synthesize simultaneously."

It is important to remember that though it takes "special types of individuals" that there are many of us that are interested in this work and that through collaboration we can get much more work done. Though I have done my share of genealogy, it has been greatly enhanced by collaborating with others.

Sharing your work, and asking for help when you come up to a brickwall will help with the analysis and synthesizing.

Here is a story about collaboration.

I did a tremendous amount of work on a family line. About five years ago I found two genealogists, one working in Brazil, and the other in Spain, that had also done a lot of work on what I had been researching. They had also spent decades compiling information. They had not collaborated and had worked on separate branches. I realized that my work complemented the work of both gentlemen as mine filled in the pieces that brought their work together forming a giant family tree. Unfortunately one of the genealogists passed away about the time that I had discoverered his work. The other genealogist from Spain is very old and is unsure about making corrections to his work as my research corrects a few of his assumptions..he also may have passed away as he does not return messages. What I have now is a giant family tree made up of the work from the three of us working thousands of miles from each other.

So as you continue to work, remember that others are also working and that your contribution may be the little pieces that are extremely important in putting together a giant family tree.

Linda,
Thank you for taking the time and effort to respond to my post. I thought I was being obtuse searching page by page, but now it seems to be par for the course. Hopefully, I can connect with someone who is also interested in the towns mentioned for my relatives. I also find myself having to correct records because I am only now realizing that there is: country, state, region, town, parish, incorporated towns within towns, and neighborhoods. All I was listing was the town.

There is a place called Santa Barbara in Durango near the bottom of Durango and a place called Santa Barbara in Chihuahua near the top of Durango, so it would be one of those places. But Nombre de Dios is closer to Santa Barbara, Durango, so it's probly that one.
