The Time of Birth on Baptismal Certificates for San Miguel

Recently I started my Familytree Maker cleanup of my Alviso/Bejar genealogy trees. I am adding a few things I did not add originally. One is the time of birth.

Maureen you brought up a good point.  I've often wondered abt time of birth since so many ancestors did not read or write so being able to tell time or even owning a clock seems strange to me.  The mothers were not usually at the baptism so it was up the the Father and the padrinos to pick a time.  a.m. or p.m. would be easy but actual time is hard to believe..

Paul,

Children were baptized shortly after their birth. When the Baptism took place, the infant was taken to the church by the father or the Padrinos, godparents or the grandparents but never the mother. The mother was not allowed to leave the house until after 40 days. It was believed to be unsafe or un-healthy for the mother to go out doors. Births always occurred in the home, not in a hospital.

Per the Catholic church, a baby had to be baptized in order for it to be saved in the event the child should die before baptism, therefore the baptism could not wait. In many towns in Mexico, that's still how it's done.

I've wondered about that also. I just read somewhere that when Jesus was born, the mother had to go to a purification ritual after 40 days. I think I also have heard that in Mexico, mothers had to stay in the house for 40 days and it was the godparents who usually took the child to be baptized, so they would not know the exact hour of birth.

it was traditional for a mother to stay in bed for up to 40 days.  That's what I was told by my grandmothers who were both born in Mexico, one in Jalisco and the other in Zacatecas.  Even today you would seldom see a mother of a new born out and abt within the first week except for a Dr.s visit..

Hola Elysia,

I got your email but thought best to post my answer here in case this might help somebody else.

I do not have copies of the original records for Valvina, but here is what I gathered from the online database at FamilySearch.org & IGI:

VALVINA REYNOSO was born abt. 1814 in Moyahua, Zacatecas. She was the daughter of SILVERIO REYNOSO & GREGORIA CARRILLO. That is as far as I have gone in that line. My 4th G-grand-father is Toribio Reynoso, Valvina' brother. The church records for Moyahua start at about 1812, and unfortunatley, the Juchipila church records before that era have been lost. I fear that's where most of our REYNOSO/RENTERIA, HARO, RODRIGUEZ, LUNA, PONCE, etc. information would be.

CAUTION: I also found an ALVINA REYNOSO, who was married to Estevan Lopez, and her parents names are the same as VALVINA...I still have not figured out if this is one person who married twice, or if they were sisters with similar names. But sadly, we do not have their marriage dates to confirm the info from the record.

FYI: When searching for REYNOSO names in Moyahua & Juchipila, also search under RENTERIA. The family used both. Search this site for posts about the REYNOSO/RENTERIA names and you will see examples of what I mean.

Good luck!

Comentario

I am aware of the Juchipia "lost records" we ought to remember our ancestors traveled alot, not all hope is lost.Ive seen Juchipila citizens go to Tabasco, Jalpa, Huanusco, Tlatenango, Zac. Calvillo and Aguascalientes, Ags.Teocaltiche and Nochistlan. All surrounding parishes. It is possible they could have gone there as well.

Ill look into your info and see if I can find anything. It looks like you descendfrom the Haro family which populated almost all of Zacatecas! If youhave lines in Tlatenango, Tuel and Juchipila. It would be good to checkchurch records in Tabasco (also called Villa del Refugio) in Zacatecas.Ive seen in records people coming from Juchipila which is down the road. Also try Jalpa, Zac. You might want to also consider lastly Calvillo, Ags.Even Teocaltiche, Jalisco. I have this problem where my ancestors went all over this place (el Valle de Huejucar). Good thing most churches are newfrom the 1750s. Tabasco records start in 1747. Calvillo, 1772. I think Jalpastarts 1820 or so. Teocaltiche back in 1627 or so.

Thank you!!

I thought of that, but wasn't sure how crazy mobile my ancestors were... I will try searching using the places in Jalisco, or Jalisco in general. I usually just use the pilot site at family search.org. I am not really knowledgeable of otherways to look things up.

Thank you again,

Elysia

Hello Angelina,

In your response you use "send for a copy". Are you requesting "copies" from Salt Lake? If so, what has been your experience? I have not used this method of research, but instead have relied on the old fashioned way - ordering from my local FHC microfilm.

Best wishes,

Hello Paul,

Yes, I order copies of the actual record from Salt Lake. You can get the
forms from your local FHC or from the website. It takes anywhere from 2 to 8
weeks to get them back. The cost is $2 per record. Occasionally they've had
problems locating the record I'm interested in but normally I've had pretty
good luck. The catch is that you can only order 8 records every two weeks
and lately the turnaround time has been closer to 6 weeks so you have to be
patient.

To find the form go to familysearch.org click on "forms" under "Start Your
Family Tree" scroll down to "Request For Photocopies - IGI and Sources"
click on that and follow the directions.

Hope this helps.

I want to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New

who is now 3 1/2 years old.......hard to believe it has been that long
since I sent you all her baby pictures! We had a wonderful snowfall
last week and it got down to minus 13 celsius (or about 7 degrees
fahrenheit).......pretty cold for me! I return to Texas on Jan 6th
and plan to get back into my genealogy research. 2009 was pretty
rough for me since I lost my mom on Jan 19th and my sister-in-law on
Oct 27th but I am hoping 2010 will be brighter.

Again, Merry Christmas and the best in 2010!

Alessandro, (both your first and last names are Italian),

Welcome to the group. I don't speak or write Spanish well, so I hope you can help me understand the statement you made: "se que Zacatecas es uno de los estados mas golpeados y dañados sus archivos por los cristeros, muchos de ellos acabaron en el fuego y perdiendose la información".

My father was from Jerez, Zacatecas, and he had some surnames in his lines that were Italian (not Vitela). I can't even find a record of his birth in 1903 or his sisters birth in 1898 or a record of the marriage of his parents. Like you said, I think you said, the records only go back from 1860? More recent records from 1860 to 1913 seem to be missing. A priest told my father that the records in his church were burned during the Revolution.

What happened? Who were the cristeros, and why did they burn the records? I thought the records were burned by the Revolutionaries who were against the Church and the Government, and I thought the cristeros were on the side of the priests and the church records.

Ojala alguien pueda orientarme o contribuir a mi investigación.

Gracias de antemano.

Thanks for writing back. What I can tell you about the burned records in zacates is that exactly that happened based on the revolution. You are right saying that the cristeros were on the church side, I expressed myself wrong, I should have said instead "LA Cristeada" which evoques the cristeros accions on the church's side against the government regulations. The main problen then, was the new regulations based on the revolutions took the authority and properties of the church. Besides, it restricted the "free- public cult" and that is why the soldiers (governnment) burned many records as an imposition of the new regulations. Priests had to hide and were under persecution, when found were murdered and their records burned (some of them as martirs).

By the way, which italian family are you looking for in Jalpa?

Best regards.

Hello all.

I'm finally getting around to introducing myself and the beginnings of my family research:

http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/17213

It's very exciting to see how far some have been able to take their histories.  Although I'm just getting started in my research,  I hope that at some point, something I've found out will help someone else.

Happy hunting,

I have been doing Genealogy for 5 years and found my roots from my mother and father side are from Jalostotitlan, Jalisco area. I have my genealogy file in the files area of the group under, "Cuellar, Danny" but you can find it directly at http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/17260
So far I gone up to the 1700's and hopefully would like to go back even further to find my ancestors that came from Spain.

My name is Mike Gordoa Jr. and I am seeking the family of my father, Miguel Gordoa Acosta. My father was born 29 September 1908 in the vicinity of the Hacienda Pasjae near Pedricenas, Durango (from baptismal record ). He was the son of Alfredo Gordoa and Juana Acosta. My grandmother, Juana Acosta, was born in la Punta, Aguascaliente and I have traced her genealogy back to her grandfather`s family in la Punta ( near Rincon de Romos, Agus. ).
What I know about my Grandfather Gordoa is that he was a mining engineer and was killed in a mining accident in the Cuencame area of Durango in the year 1910. His parents were Miguel Gordoa and Tomasa Mata.I have searched for answers via the FHC and Gordoa`s from Spain and Mexico who helped and encouraged me on my quest to find the family of my grandfather Gordoa.I have found no records of my grandfather`s death or the baptism of my two aunts,Tomasa and Emilia born in 1906 and 1910.My grandmother with her 3 children crossed into the USA at Eagle Pass, Texas on 23 December 1910.
The first Gordoa from Spain was Francisco Ignacio Gordoa who came to Oaxaca about 1740. He married a Peruivan lady named Justa Lorenza de Loaeza on 27 April 1753 in Jerez de Oaxaca. They had 7 children and the family story is well documented. Two sons migrated to central mexico and made their fortunes in agriculture and mining. I believe that my Grandfather belongs to the branch of Juan Francisco Gordoa who settled in Pinos, Zacatecas and married Mariana de Barrios. They had 12 children, 4 of which were priests, and one became the first mexican bishop of Guadalahara. His name was Doctor Don Jose Miguel Gordoa y Barrios.Juan Gordoa`s second marriage was to Maria Luiza Flores de Moyeda in Pinos on 4 october 1792. They had 4 children that I have baptismal records. One of their children, Jose Miguel Benito Gordoa was baptised in Pinos on 26 December 1797 and married Felipa Diaz de Leon ( no record ). They had at least 6 children that I know. I have baptismal records for all but tw
o.
One son, Juan Nepomuceno Gordoa was baptised in San Luis Potosi, SLP on 26 August 1829. He married Flavia Montes ( no records ). This information was told to me by a lady who is writing a book on the Gordoa Family. Juan N. and Flavia had 9 children that I have baptismal records. The first child was baptised in Lagos de Moreno in 7 September 1861. Her name was Maria Donaciana Gordoa Montes.
Her baptismal record said she lived in San Teresa, Jalisco. This was the last record of the Gordoa`s at the church in Lagos de Moreno.
I pickup the trail for the family of Juan N. again at a church in Leon, Guanajuato. The remainder of the 8 children were baptised there. Two of the sons were : Pedro Miguel de la Santisma Trinidad baptised 30 April 1863
Miguel Octaviano Merced de la Trinidad baptised 23 March 1865
Miguel Octaviano is the strongest candidate to be my long lost grandfather. He could have gone to college and married my grandmother before the eldest sister of my father was born in 1906 in Mexico. There is a Rancho San Jose de Gordoa which is part of the town of Santa Teresa. The lady writing the book told me that Juan N. lived there. This rancho is close to Lagos de Moreno, Jal. and Leon, Gto.
Many of our members are from this area or have family in this area.I need your help.I am at a deadend.Does anyone know of the Gordoa family of this area? If the ranch still belongs to the Gordoa family, I would be willing to make a trip there.I have been searching for my family roots for nearly 10 years.I have traced the family of Fracisco Ignacio Gordoa back to Zalduendo, Basque Province of Alava,Spain to the late 1500`s But I don1t know how I connect to the Gordoa family of Mexico. Thanks in advance for whatever help can be provided. I know this group represents a wealth of expertise and information. I have learned a great deal from all of you. I should have asked for your help long ago.I apologize if my plea is long winded but wanted to share what I know.

I have just started researching my father's family who settled in
Bakersfield, CA after coming here around the years 1915-1920. His mother was Ysabel
Munoz from Aguascalientes. The surnames connected to her are: Munoz, Esparza,
Soria, Naranjo, Canales, Martinez, Trevino, Renteria, Sepulveda and Garcia.
His father was Jesus Mora from Encarnacion de Diaz, Jalisco. For now, I am
concentrating on my Grandfather's family. The surnames connected to his family
are: Mora, Jaime/Jayme/Xayme, Moran, Pedroza, Alba, Romo, Lopez, Cueva,
Villalobos, Delgado, Tiscareno, de Lizaldi (Elisalde?), Esparza and Gabay. I
have already found 2 distant relatives through this site who have been VERY
helpful. Thank you, Luis and Daniel!
I am currently going over the films from Encarnacion de Diaz for the years
1860-1890 trying to find the birth and marriage records for my paternal
grandparents, Sabina Jaime and Narciso Mora. I have found Narciso's information,
but not Sabina's. Her birth year is anywhere from 1868 to 1871. There are
about 20 years between Sabina and her sister, Norberta and I have been unable to
find any other siblings. Also, Narciso's marriage records names "Higinia
Muniz". There is a child for them born in 1888 but the next child born in 1889
lists Sabina as the mother. So I am also searching for a death record for
Higinia. What is confusing is that Higinia's parents raised Sabina's father,
Jose Refugio Jaime.
I would also like to search confirmation records. Does anyone know at what
age confirmation usually took place during that time period in Mexico? Is it
about 13 or 14 like now in the US?
Thank you for providing this opportunity to help each other connect to our
roots.

was recorded 5 days after the christening or 19 days after birth.

Stuart,

Confirmations were oftentimes at the same time as baptisms but could also be every 3 or 4 years, depending on when the Bishop could make it to your parish. Sometimes the Confirmandi had to go to another parish rather than wait several years for the Bishop to visit the home parish.

It was not like it is here at a set age.

The 1844 confirmations for Yahualica, Jalisco, lasted days and included well
over a thousand. It looks to me like anyone and everyone of all ages from
the parish got confirmed.

Jonathan,
Thank you so much for sharing your information. I have a copy of the church record for the marriage between Narciso and Higinia but not Narciso and Sabina. The date for Sabina's marriage has to be between May 1888 and early 1889 according to the baptism records of the children of Narciso. I also have not been successful in finding death information for Higinia. The marriage date you have for Higinia and Sabina are identical. Could it be that they are the same person? If so, how could it be confirmed? You can contact me personally at kanakalele@aol.com if you'd like to go into more detail. Also, I have pictures of their graves-would this be something to post on this site?
Sherri Mora
P.S. Are the people you addded part of your tree? If so, does that make us related? I've found 2 possibly 3 other relatives through this site!

Sherri,

I doubt that Higinia and Sabina are the same person. They have different
parents. The parents of Higinia are Lazaro Muniz and Teresa Lopez. And
Sabina parents are Jose Refugio Jaime and Donaciana Pedroza. But with a
little more researching, you should be able to learn more about the two
wives.

Also, the indivuals that I added, they are not from any of my lines (I don't
have any ancestral lines through Mexico). I found those individuals, using
FamilySearch. The reason, that I looked at your lines, is that I have
researched some Mora lines in Encarnacion de Diaz and Lagos de Moreno.

Thanks,
Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,
Under normal circumstances I would not suspect that they were one person, however, Sabina's father, Jose Refugio Jayme, was raised by Lasaro Muniz and Teresa Lopez-the parents listed for Higinia Muniz. Yes, it's confusing. I'm reviewing films from Encarnacion so I will take a look at your reports and pass along anything I think may be helpful. I find lots of helpful info by just browsing.

I am doing research on the Reyes and Ybarra families that came from and through Mexico.

I have been researching Juan Joseph Reyes y Diaz, b. between 1716-1723 Zapotlan El Grande Mexico, d. Mexico, married to Maria Gertrudis Reyes between 1740-1748 Zapotlan Del Rey, Jalisco Mexico, b. Between 1720-1727 Zapotlan El Grande Mexico d. Mexico, son - Juan Francisco Reyes b. Bet 1745-1749 Zapotlan El Grande Mexcio, d. 8 Nov 1809 Mission San Gabriel, Alta California.

and

Desiderio Ybarra, b. about 1719, Mexico, married to Guiol b. about 1723

I have extensive information forward but not backwards, like who are the parents of the above, and where did they live, and their grandparents.

I am at a road block here and would appreciate any help anyone can give.

Thank you,

Hi Tina, welcome to the group. I think the mistake people most often make, is not being informed on greography, if you know the geography when researching, this will help you enough. History is important too. Well it appears your area is where my father is from. His grandparents being from Los Altos de Jalisco. Zapotlán el Grande is also known as Ciudad Guzmán. Zapotlán del Rey only has records around the mid 1700 to the present day. Ciudad Guzmán starts in 1666 or so. You have to worry about checking tin the right places. just because you dont find someone in X place doesnt mean they're out there. Zapotlán del Rey will be tricky but Ciudad Guzmán will be easier. Ive done about 3 films from there (they were already in my FHC), people tend to stay around there in the area. You also have to take in consideration Los Altos is up the road from Zapotlán del Rey. They might have also come from there. Send me what you have I may be of some help. My cousin Linda Castañón has also done extensive research in these areas, you might want to communicate with her, she might have some tips and such for you. Just start ordering films when your ready.

Hi Tina and Daniel, I did check my data base and do not have this Reyes couple.  I will double check what I have but I only enter into into my files my families and the families they married into.  Daniel is right though, the films for Zapotlan El Grande/Ciudad Gusman have many records for Zapotlan Del Rey.

happy hunting..

Tina I checked my records and found in the years you mentioned baptism records from Zapotlan El Grande/Ciudad Gusman do not contain grandparents.  The marriage records do so that would be your best bet for finding elusive grandparents.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Hello,

I am very excited and happy to be able to be a part of this online community. Over the years I have had a lot of questions as to the whereabouts and descendants of my parents. My parents have been able to furnish some information regarding their ancestry, but there continues to be lots of gaps regarding dates and complete names. I was looking for information online one day when I bumped into this particular website. I knew both my parents were from Aguascalientes, and I had just assumed that their parents were too. Much to my surprise, after I asked my parents about my grandparents they told me that all of my grandparents were from Los Altos de Jalisco.

My name is Hilda del Carmen Davalos Moreno, I am interested in researching the Davalos, Moreno, Lopez, Franco, Marquez, Gutierrez families... I am barely starting so I have a shaky skeleton of information. It is an exciting learning experience to learn about my ancestors.

My maternal grandfather was Leodegario Moreno Franco b. Oct. 2, 1912 San Miguel el Alto, Jalisco, who married Maria de los Angeles Lopez Gutierrez born in 1916 from San Miguel el Alto, Jalisco. His father was Jose Trinidad Moreno Lozano married to Amelia Franco. Jose Trinidad Moreno Lozano died April, 18, 1957. My mother has given me these dates.

My maternal grandmother Maria de los Angeles Lopez Gutierrez' parents were Josefa Gutierrez Jimenez from San Miguel el Alto, Jal. I have no dates yet regarding my great grandmother. My grandmother's father was Refugio Lopez Munoz, from San Miguel el Alto.

The curious thing now is that my grandmothers are sisters therefore, my parents are cousins so my paternal grandmother Maria Elena Lopez Gutierrez' (b. 1928' parents are the same as above.

My paternal grandfather was Dario Davalos Marquez born in 1918 San Miguel el Alto. This is all I have as of right now so I am very excited to see what lots of new information will come my way... So I am asking assistance to find more information on all aspects of my family...

Thank you.

It's was a pleasant surprise, to receive your e-mail, Esther.

Christobal de Villalpando married Maria Antonia de Villareal sometime before
1731, which is the approximate birth year of one of their children, Juan
Manuel Villalpando, who married Maria Gertrudis de Soto on 20 Feb 1757 in
Teocaltiche, Jalisco. If you wish I can scan and e-mail you a copy of their
marriage document, which states that their parents were Christobal de
Villalpando and Maria de Villareal.

I hope that this information will assist you in your family history
research.

Paul,
I did. However, I am visiting my son in Northern California so I don't
have much information with me (I forgot to bring it, :-) but I don't
have information going that far back. Leticia helped with these names
and I only have to mid 1850's. I probably can connect but it may not be
for some time. Do you have anything for 1800's? Is Rancho Cucamonga
toward L.A.? I lived in Northern California for a while, so I don't
remember where Rancho Cucamonga is.

Anyway, the names you mentioned sure sound familiar and hope when I get
home I can check things out further. I'm in San Diego County.

I don't have any new information for you but your Surname caught my attention since the only time I have seen it is when Godina is mispelled or read incorrectly... Except, I have heard of the composer, Genaro Codina and I believe there is also a city by the same name...

Out of curiosity, what is the name of Jose Eufracio Codina's spouse and date of marriage? Also, what is the name of Mucio Codina's spouse? I too have family from Jerez, Zacatecas and I am just curious if my family crossed your family's path...

Thanks,
Angie Godina

Hi Angie,

Interesting how these two surnames are so similar. Please look under the 'Files' tab at the top of the page and find Codina. I have a partial genealogy register (pdf document) for Jose Eufracio Codina. See if any of the names listed look familiar. After you see the names, please let me know what you think.

Thanks....Omar

My family said the same thing about toribio romo and mu granfather. They saiD that they were 3rd cousins. I did the research and found them to be 3rd cousins three times and another link of 3rd cousin once removed. Sometimes there so many links between individuals That they seem closer related than they actually are.

I am trying to document my link to Genaro Codina, composer of Marcha Zacatecas. He was born in the city of Zacatecas in 1852 to Santiago Codina and Maria Dolores Fernandez. Family history has it that he was 'primo hermano' (first cousin) to my great grandfather, Mucio Codina. That would make Genaro's father and Mucio's father brothers and their father would be Jose Eufracio Codina.

Jose Eufracio married in Jerez, Zacatecas and had several children there but I found no record for Santiago Codina. FamilySearch IGI has an unsourced record for Santiago's marriage in Zacatecas, Zacatecas in 1851 but I have been unable to find the church record in the Family History Library films. My search has been hampered by missing years in the films.

If anyone has run across any of there names in your research, I would greatly appreciate your help.

I have info on Julio Jimenez and Telesfora as well on Romualdo Vera and Tiburcia PAredes,

what do you need exactly? Ancestors go back to at least mid 1700s. Kids? Grandkids?

Hi Daniel.

I'm just learning about all this, and I have only the information on my grandmother's baptizm certificate. Her name was Maria Martina Vera, daughter of Luis Vera and Francisca Jimenez. Ramualdo and Tiburcia and Julio and Telesfora were her grandparents
Any information you can help me with would be greatly appreciated. I would like to know if there is family on the Vera side that we can learn about.

Thank you for responding.. you made my day !
