Thanks

I would like to thank my recent found Cousin Linda from Everett. She has given my a great Christmas gift one I found a lost cousin I thought I would never find. My parents know her Gutierrez relatives very well but never met Linda.

Thank you Daniel for expressing your gratitude. . .knowing your joy
brings great joy to me. Don't anyone neglect to value the importance of
finding lost family. I remember when I was a child I was stunted by an
event that is crystal clear in my mind to this day. I was left at a
child day care with not enough advanced preparation. It was truly
terrorizing and something I'll remember for the rest of my life. Said
all that to say that imagine if my parents never returned and the one
day turned into a week into a month into a year into 200 years. Imagine
the joy I felt when my parents returned to pick me up and we were
reunited. So likewise imagine the joy our ancestors are experiencing
everytime our families find each other again.

yeah yeah yeah there I go again.

Families finding each other is a great Christmas gift for all!

My Mendez line started from 1840 to 1750 thanks to her. I thank you Linda, I don't know how I would of continued my genealogy without your help. yeah, yeah, yeah, you can go there any time Joseph, from my side I go there a lot si, si, si.

Thank you and everyone in the group for having me in, even when I am in the silent corner since none of you seems to share my familiar tree thanks to the circumstances of intermarriage, as Daniel refers, and a conservative sense of blood line and land that the Los Altos region people practiced for at least three centuries.

Wishing every body has the best of celebrations of the season I´m sending hugs and kisses!

DNA Genteic Genealogy

How does this help one's genealogy? I heard you can see where you and someone else like Royal shared a common ancestor at one point. Can it extend your genealogy any further by doing this?

Comentarios

Comentario

since I just woke up and you just posted this I'll toss in a comment but
I'm by far no expert in DNA (I've CC'ed Gary Felix - Hi Gary. . .Feliz
Navidad - of the Mexico DNA project to comment if I totally miss the
boat on something: very possible):

to help your genealogy along using DNA you want to work with a Y-DNA
work up which is the one passed along through male individuals from
father to sons. mt-DNA is passed on from the mother to both sons and
daughters. So you can do your Y and mt DNA, but from my understanding
Y-DNA is much closer in time span to our present time while mt-DNA skips
back many many thousands of years back so it is harder to find a match
with someone who you can prove is your relative via a written document.

So what you do is have the 25 or 37 marker or even the next one 67?
marker test (the more markers the more likely you're a match if both
indivduals test the same). And you use it to compare first with
indivduals that have the same surname and you think might be your
relatives. If you all come up a match then you are related.

Then the way you advance your genealogy is to hope that the person you
matched up with has advanced their genealogy in a direction that will
help you. Otherwise you will be the one to help them. Then again on some
lines maybe you'll be able to help each other.

well I'm sure I might have worded wrong and I'm hoping others will comment.

Lopez Surname

Is anyone researching the Lopez line in Huanusco Zacatecas?

Here is my oldest Lopez of my line... Ramon LOPEZ (b. 1802) and his wife Crisanta Esparza (b. 1810)

Any help is appreciated.

my cousin Angie Godinez showed me the Lopez Esparza familysearch.org
trick where you use that as the surname and check "exact spelling" then
you go back and do the three other versions of Lopes Esparza and Lopez
Esparsa and Lopes Esparsa and I guess you could try Lopez and Ezparsa
etc with all the other variations.

I'm late for work gotta go.

My Gedcom is Now Available

My gedcom is now available for those group members who would like to view my genealogy. Something everyone on this group should notice when viewing it is that almost all of my ancestors on my Mother's side intermarried and may apprar more than a couple times sharing the same ancestors.

Daniel you did a good job introducing yourself to the group. I only wish I had started doing genealogy at an earlier age like you but then again I would not have had th time I do in retirement. I'm glad my research into the Mendez family in Tamazula Jalisco gave you more information on our joint lineage since your gr-grandfather Francisco Mendez was my gr-grandmother Maria Mendez's brother. Just think, they were born in 1883 and 1884 and we are just getting to know each other through Nuestros Ranchos.. What a gift this group is to all of us. I have to think you are the youngest member at age 14.. well done!

Daniel,

Welcome to the group. It is awesome that at such a young age you have such a keen interest in genealogy. Your grandfather gifted you with a rich legacy and you chose to continue in his footsteps. If in this short time you have already made connections with some in this group, what a treat and an honor.

One thing I would dare to advise you on is not to make assumptions about anything. Sometimes when we make assumptions before we get the evidence, we are blinded by what we think it should be and fail to see or to search in what may be the true path of our ancestors instead of the one we have pre-supposed or pre-imposed on them. Our ancestors usually show us the way if we are willing to stop, look and listen to them.

My best to you,

My grandfather Martin died in 2001. My maternal grandparents are
Antonio del Camino Lizalde II (1935) (currently living) and Maria Carolina Garcia del
Camino (1940) she died in 2003. I started Genealogy about 2 years ago. My grandfather started in 1985
so I continued for him and fell in love with genealogy. My hobbies
are golfing, coin and stamp collecting. I descend from Mariano del Camino Martinez who
people call those rich people with those HUGE haciendas from back in
the day but then the government split the haciendas with the poor
which was nice of them. He owned La Luz. in Huanusco, Zacatecas.
I love reading. I like to travel around with my family. I have been told by my grandpa that he possibly descends from King Rizzardo di Camino IV of Treviso he went to a genealogy
conference back in 1987 and a man helped me with a lot of stuff. But
obviosly I don't have evidence of this connection. He is from the 1300's in Treviso Italy. Im pretty young for my age and working on my genealogy but very mature for my age. What I do know is that I descend from the conquistador Lord Juan del Camino de Montanes this was passed down through the generations many of the few things. But then again I also don't haveany substanial evidence of this link. It was said Lord Juan settled at the southeastern edge of Aguascalientes and San Luis Potosi. This was in 1542. He came in 1521 and relocated there. Im at the point that I have connected my Camino ancestors to Calvillo, Aguascalientes. Thanks to Joseph. Thats all about me Thanks to everyone being such great members of this group. Merry Christmas.

Lisa,

Have you looked or researched Nochistlan's records. They have extensive birth, baptism, marriage, death and census records for Rancho Lo de Carrera and Tenayuca Zacatecas.

You might want to order film # 1092601 for Nochistlan's civil birth records for the years 1909-1910. Remember that sometimes your relatives think they were born a certain year and they may have been born in or around that year. I always give it ± 10 years from the verbal date they give. You may want to check out Oficialia Toyahua which is near Tenayuca too, that would be film # 2245148 and it includes Births from 1871-1924, some years are missing but 1909 is included. It also includes Marriages 1875-1905 and some Death records from 1871-1920.
There are also 3 films for Baptisms for Nochistlan for those years, they are film #'s 0226696, 1907-1908,
0226697, Baptisms 1908-1909 and Baptisms 1909-1911, film # 0226698.

There are also Baptisms of hijos naturales de Nochistlan, 1902-1930, Film # 0226717.
If you need help let me know, we live very close to each other.

I think that about 30% of the records I view are from Tenayuca and Toyahua.

My grandmother, Maria Guadalupe Lopez was born at Rancho Lo de Carrera in 1909. Her parents, Biviano Lopez and Crispina Martinez left Mexico soon after 1909 (family tradition says 1910) and settled in Morenci, AR. By the 1940s, most of the family had relocated to Los Angeles, or Oakland CA. I know the names of Biviano and Crispina's parents, but that's it.
I will mostly be using library, LDS resources, and the Internet.
I am extremely impressed and fascinated by the action on Nuestros Ranchos. I've been involved with genealogy for about five years and when I came across this site I knew I had finally arrived. I would appreciate any feedback.
I wiish you all a wonderful and fruitful New Year.

Surname>ROLON

Does anyone know where this surname comes from? I know it's not Spain. I found it in several French genealogies as ROLIN. Any help is appreciated. Thanks. HAPPY HOLIDAYS.

Hi Daniel, Rolon is Portuguese.. The slave traders were mostly Portuguese so this would not be unusual since the Rolon line in the 1600's were Mulatos. I've read that they brought many slaves from Angola during the late 1500's and early 1600's. So I think we can safely think our Rolon ancestor was either from Angola or brought over as a trained slave from South America where they were taken earlier to work the mines and the fields. Slaves were also taken to the Carribean Islands in the earlier years then also brought as trained workers to Mexico.

Have you been able to extend this Rolon line any earlier than Juan or Joan
Rolon in 1665? Cuidad Guzman? If it's Joan it's probably French origin. I
will probably work on this line it's the only of our lines in the 1600's
very interesting.

Daniel,
Joan was also the Portuguese way of spelling the name we pronounce Juan. I have no reason to believe this Mulato slave line has French lineage but one never knows until the record proving or disproving it appears.. Remember, the spelling of names really was left up to the scribe many times since most people did not read or write especially in the slave lines. Our ancestors seldom saw the records and trusted the scribe. It also wasn't above people to pay a bribe to improve their lot especially if a baby was light skinned. Having it read Espanol or Mestizo might improve the childs lot in life..
just something to think about.

I have Gonzales and Dias in my Alviso line and Gonzales and Gutierrez in my Jauregui line.

I have Vasquez in my Alviso line, but in Valle de Guadalupe and Orepera in my Jauregui line also from Valle de Guadalupe.

The Alviso's, Dias and Gonz. were from San Miguel El Alto and also Nuestra Senora De La Asuncion, Jalostotitlan.

Have you had an opportunity to go into the files section of nuestros ranchos and to read up on the ranchos members' surnames and places of interest for each member? That might be a good starting point and in that way you will become familiar with the people, places and with the features of site.

My husband's great-grandmother was Marciana Cervantes, born in Encarnacion de Diaz, Jalisco in 1869. She was the daughter of Ysac Cervantes, born in Encarnacion de Diaz in 1836. Ysac was the son of Dorotea Cervantes who was born in 1798 in Encarnacion de Diaz. The father of Dorotea was Juan Jose or Jph Anto. Cerbantes who married a Ma. Juliana Rubalcaba, and his father was Jose Cervantes. His mother was Magdalena Narvaes. That is as far as I have been able to trace that line.

Hi Linda:

Thank you for your time and effort in trying to find my mother's record. I
appreciate it.

The only Minillas that I have found so far is North of Mezquitic, Jalisco,
very close to the Zacatecas border. I have a film for Mezquitic that starts
in 1903, but the problem is that it begins in November, 1903. My Mom was
born in March. In that film, I found people from "Rancho Minillas",
registered at the church in Mezquitic. I was hoping that the film would
cover the whole year. I have ordered the film that covers January through
October and I think it will be here in a couple of weeks.

Tony:

Welcome to the group. I am sure that you will find plenty of people willing to help you out with your research here, especially if you are willing to share your success stories. I think one of the great aspects of the group is getting to share in the successes of others such that when we are up against a brick wall, it is inspirational to see someone else make a breakthrough...

Here are my suggestions as to how to proceed.

The best resource is the LDS church and their website familysearch.org. They tend to only index events (baptisms and marriages) prior to 1900 so your grandfather's birth is right at the cusp of that so it would be very helpful to find out what his parents' names were... so:

1. Try to find an older relative who might know what his parents' names were

2. Find his death record in the social security death index and request a copy of his social security application which will list his parents

3. Find his marriage record... where was he married? In Chicago? His marriage record should list his parents

NEXT:

Go to the FILMS section of the site and find the marriages for Momax at the end of the 1800s and try to find his parent's marriage record. It may be that they were married in a neighboring town so you should try towns like Tlaltenango... look in the maps section and see what other towns are nearby. You will find that people often moved, though usually not too far.

Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

BTW... what is your grandfather's name?

Good to hear from you. Your English is just fine!

I think I found your tree. Are your parents Miguel
Lopez Lara and Trinidad Perez? There is almost nothing
to work with in that tree.
Can you tell me where, and when your parents were
born?

If we fill in a few blanks, that should satisfy
Joseph.

Have a great time in Jalisco.

I don't think you are understanding. Right now there is a group for
Jalisco on Rootsweb. Right now there is a group for Zacatecas on
Rootsweb. Right now there is a group for Aguascalientes on Rootsweb. Why
was it necessary to build "Ranchos" and then "Nuestros Ranchos" since
these groups were already in existence? In fact Ernie why did you join
"Nuestros Ranchos" since these groups were already in existence?????

I think many members of the group agree with the idea of trying to keep
"Nuestros Ranchos" for those that are serious about their genealogy. So
then why the statement about satisfying "Joseph"? It's not about
satisfying joseph it is about being serious about your research or at
least "lifting your finger" the smallest bit to imitate someone who is
serious about their research.

Also think about my "joke" of a definition of being serious:

1) agree to do your own research

2) demonstrate that by sending in a representative tree showing your
connection to Jalisco, Zacatecas, and/or Aguascalientes. BUT if you are
just beginning and have NOTHING to submit then submit a sample of your
family's Oral History that indicates you have a connection to Jalisco,
Zacatecas, and/or Aguascalientes.

The above two requirements are all it takes to become a life member of
the Nuestros Ranchos group. To meet those two requirements requires just
the smallest bit of effort and about 10 minutes of time. Imagine this
scenario. The laziest genealogist in the world wants to be a member of
Nuestros Ranchos because he/she doesn't want to "lift a finger" to do a
bit of work in searching for their own roots. . .no they would much
rather find others to do the work and "prey" on those that do all the
hard work and when they find one that has tapped into one of the
branches of their tree they swoop in and gather all the information
saying thanks as they build and build and build on their genealogy
having done none of the work. *[rofs] Anyway to be a member for life
would require just opening up an email to moderator@nuestrosranchos.org
and just writing down the names of their grandparents and telling where
they were from also maybe tossing in a "guessed" date of birth and
matrimony. Now imagine that you find a person that is just not willing
to even do that or even to email the moderator and ask for an extension
because sending in that 10 minute email is just too laborious of a task
to accomplish during the holidays. Well let me tell you what, if they
are unwilling to even contact me or unmotivated to write a 10 minute
email then they don't fit into this absurd definition of a "serious
researcher."

Do me a favor and drop the phrase "satisfy Joseph" it offends me.

I'm trying my hardest to keep this group from becoming another Rootsweb.
. .because if it does become another Rootsweb then there is no reason
for it to exist. And believe me to drop the requirements for membership
will mean becoming just like Rootsweb.

I would like to invite every member who wants Nuestros Ranchos to be
like Rootsweb to just unsubscribe themselves and participate more on
Rootsweb. Below are the instructions for joining the Rootswebs email
lists for: Jalisco, Zacatecas, and/or Aguascalientes.

in doing research you must check death certificates for places of birth. Do you have the death certificate for Juan Jose Saldivar or a baptism? What documents do you have Quirina Saldivar Gomez and what do the documents say?

Hi there Esther ,

First off , Thanks for the help . #1. I haven't checked on the death certificates or baptisms but I will . #2. I have the marraige certificate of Candelario Alvarado and Quirina Saldivar dated Oct. 26, 1844 married in the church of Villa de Santiago , Nuevo Leon .

In the marriage certificate it shows Juan Jose Saldivar and Maria Ygnacia Gomez as the parents of Quirina . Juan and Maria were married on Sept. 25, 1817 . I don't have the origen of the marraige .

Here is what I have :
Quirina Saldivar Gomez : parents are Juan Jose Saldivar Rodriguez de Montemayor y Ayala and Maria Ygnacia Gomez Alanis

Juan Jose Saldivar's parents : Jose Gregorio Saldivar Garza and Juana Maria Rodriguez de Montemayor y Ayala Silva

Jose Gregorios parents : Agustin Saldivar Garza and Ana Josefa Rodriguez de Montemayor ( married Feb. 6, 1732 )

Agustin Saldivars parents : Juan Saldivar and Ysabel de la Garza Montemayor
In still searching and trying to connect the Zaldivars or Saldivars to the ones in Zacatecas .

Gotta go ,
Welester

On film 0605464 are listed the following Zaldivars:

MA. JUANA ZALDIVAR GOMEZ - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 02 APR 1824 Santiago Apostol, Santiago, Nuevo Leon, Mexico

5. MA. QUILINA ZALDIVAR GOMEZ - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 06 JAN 1821 Santiago Apostol, Santiago, Nuevo Leon, Mexico

6. MA. FLORENCIA ZALDIVAR GOMEZ - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 14 MAR 1822 Santiago Apostol, Santiago, Nuevo Leon, Mexico
3430. MARIA SECUNDINA SALDIVAR GOMES - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 03 JUL 1818 Santiago Apostol, Santiago, Nuevo Leon, Mexico
3439. JOSE JUSTO SALDIVAR GOMS. - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 20 JUL 1819 Santiago Apostol, Santiago, Nuevo Leon, Mexico

Vicente Zaldivar and Maria Farias Sosa had the following children:

1. Agustin Zaldivar ( my ancestor) married Ana Salinas either Monterrey or Salinas Victoria
2. Margarita Zaldivar Farias married General Diego Ayala
3. Ana Zaldivar Farias married Abrosio Cepeda Fuente
4. Vicente Zaldivar Farias m (1) Maria Ysaguirre (2) Ursula de Urrutia 1667 in Cerralvo
per Marriage Investigations of the Diocese of Guadalajara 1653 - 1750 (1-2) Boderladns Books
5. Marianna Zaldivar Farias married Diego Garcia Quintanilla
6. Maria Zaldivar Farias married Bernardo Garcia Quintanilla brother of DIego.

Agustin Zaldivar and Ana Salinas had a son Juan Zaldivar, he could be the one who married
Ysabel Garza. It is correct time period.

I don't know Vicente and Ursula's children. Check Israel Cavazos books on Protocolos of Monterrey for wills. That is where I found Agustin's. You can get Cavazos books from Borderlands Books. THere is a CD out also. ALso your library copies are available interlibrary loan.
My money is on Agustin.

There might be more.

Wow Yeaaaaaa wowowwowowowow

The first set of Saldivars is listed my great great grandmother Quirina ( not Quilina ) and the rest of them are siblings . What a Christmas present Esther and Juan Zaldivar is the one that is married to Ysabel de la Garza , I don't have the wedding date as of yet .

The film is from what period , town . I will order it today I'm helping out a couple of Mormons with some genealogy stuff .
Really Esther , thank you so very much you brought tears to my eyes .

Your new best friend ,

Hi again Esther ,

I got carried away and didn't finish my mail to you he he ;-)

So , this means that Juans' parents were Agustin and Ana and Agustins' parents were Vicente Zaldivar and Maria Farias Sosa , if this is so then you've just given me the connection from Zacatecas to Nuevo Leon !

Thanks again and again and again and one more again !

Welester, boy do I know that feeling when we connect after a long search.. Every time I see someone in the group share so openly and with documentation I see again why I belong to this group. Some of us take a little longer to gather info but let there be a need, and this group is there for you.. I'm still trying to gather the Banuelos/Quesada info to send back to "La Reina" slowly it's coming together....
Well done group!

Hola Welester: Congratulations on your new findings, with the wonderful assistance from Esther. I share your joy. Your ancestors are there for you to find them.

I had been searching for my Robles line for about 5 years, and...nada...then I posted the information to the group. Emilie, from Port Orchard, WA., found the missing link. Within a few months I was able to trace them back to 1704. This is wonderful...being so grateful to the two ladies for these random acts of kindness.
Again, I share you joy.

Welester,

Seeing as I am descended from Agustin also that makes us distant cousins. The Marriage investigation on Diego Ayala and Margarita Zaldivar documents the whole ancestry of Vicente Zaldivar, Margarita's father.
You should get the 2 volume work from Borderland Books. Also the CD on THe works of Israel Cavazos on Protocolos of Monterrey. I recently purchased the CD but I don't think all the protocolos
are on it. I think there might be more in his books.

Howdy Esther ,

I met Israel a few weeks back at a book signing for Elio J. Bottello his book title : VIDA Y GENEALOGIA DE LOS BOTTELLO he's a nice man , getting on with his years but his wife seems to also be very much into the genealogy . Interesting book , talks about how some of the Bottellos' changed thier name from Carvajal de la Cueva to Bottello during the inquisition . It also mentions some surnames like Cerda , Lozano and Morton .

I will look into the books you mentioned cuz ;-)

The film with Quirina Zaldivar's baptism is 0605464 covers 1797 - 1825 Santiago, NL.

THe early records for Monterrey have been extracted many times. I checked up to 1700 and did not see a marriage record for any Zaldivar. THey must have married in Santiago.

I checked Hilton and it says that Vicente Zaldivar brother of Agustin was married to Izaguierre in 1667 inMonterrey.

Hello Ernie ,

Maybe you could help me here , I am trying to connect my great great grandmother her name is Quirina Saldivar Gomez to Vicente de Zaldivar in Zacatecas . Quirina's father was Juan Jose Saldivar . I believe that his father was from Saltillo , Coahuila from there I don't have anymore info . I have read that one of Vicente's son's came to Saltillo , I just don't know when .

This coming monday Im going to visit the genealogist in Vill de Santiago here in Nuevo Leon , he has a copy of Guillermo Garmendia Leal's book . Im gonna check and see if there is any info I can use to connect the dots .

Thanks ,
Welester

It's good to hear from you.

I'll let you know if I can dig anything up.

I have relatives I've never met in Nuevo Leon. Part of
my maternal Porras clan. They left Hidalgo del Parral,
Chihuahua maybe 75 years ago to open a branch of
Pastas Porras in Nuevo Leon.

I've seen newspaper clippings of them, whiter than
white!
Have you heard of them?

Happy Holdiays, Ernie.

San Miguel el Alto, Jalisco records: research Digest, Vol 11, Issue 8

Hello Maureen,
I have ancestors from San Miguel El Alto & Jalostotitlan too. I
have found that sometimes I find them in Jalostotitlan records and
vice-a-versa. You might look into Jalostotitlan for that time period.

You know when reading the wonderful news of information shared, there is no wonder that this group is special. There were some comments earlier as why Nuestros Ranchos was put into existence, when there are other groups in Rootsweb etc. Well, here is the answer. With all of us being serious about our genealogy, sharing knowledge and all looking in the same area. This group is golden. We can lead each other in the right direction when we are stumped and sometimes just sometimes link our families together and fill in missing links! Sooner or later maybe we will all be related!

Welcome Newbee

Marty,

What type of research have you done? Have you accessed the www.familysearch.org website or is your research mostly oral history from family members?

The key is to provide as much information as you have to the group and in that way you will receive the greatest response.

Newbee

Hi everyone,
I am new here so bear with me if I ask to many questions... I joined the group about 2 weeks ago and put out 4 surnames that I am researching... and I want to thank those that answered me... I am reading the information that you are sending among yourself's and getting a general idea how the group works...

Welcome again Marty,

Just a quick note about how the group works. There are three lists.
Research, General, and Announce.

research@nuestrosranchos.org is for talking about our target area
(Jalisco, Zacatecas, and/or Aguascalientes) research. So that one would
be a good one for your message [Notice I changed it over from "general"
where you posted it to the research list].

general@nuestrosranchos.org is for general genealogy talk that is not
necessarily within our target area but I'm not going to go so far as to
say that it is for just a continuous and total discussion outside our
area. I would eventually like discussion outside our area to be taken to
private email but you'll have to use your own judgment as to when that
is appropriate. The recent discussion about the Zaldivar's is a good
example. Welester had a gut feeling that his Zaldivar's were from
Zacatecas and he and Esther seem to have worked toward the goal of
bringing that line back from Nuevo Leon to Zacatecas. Our group is for
Jalisco, Zacatecas, and/or Aguascalientes and the general group allows
for some flexibility but keep it in mind that our group is about
Jalisco, Zacatecas, and/or Aguascalientes.

annouce@nuestrosranchos.org is for announcements.

I said that only to say that everyone on the list especially those that
have been around for awhile should "try" to post to the appropriate list
depending on the subject of the discussion.

Marty's genealogy file can be found at:
http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/15323

Marty one of the ways that has been beneficial to many in the group for
finding information is your local Family History Center which is part of
the LDS church. You don't have to be a member of the church to use the
FHC and you can find information about the location closest to you at:
www.familysearch.org

You can also find information about what films to order and even some
descriptions of what is on those films. [Note: even if you find
information on the internet you still need to order the films and
confirm for yourself that this indeed your family].

well it is best if you find the location close to you and pay them a
visit and ask lots of questions about how to find and order films for
Fresnillo, Zacatecas.

So you order a film or two and you can only view the film at the FHC and
you will roll the film in search of your family records either baptism,
marriage, death, confirmation, census, etc.

If you need help finding your closest FHC let me know or just ask on the
list or you could just look in the phonebook for your local LDS church
and ask them where the closest one is, but like I said you will find a
complete list of them at www.familysearch.org

don't be shy to ask your questions. . .ask away.

Hi Helyn ,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me yes, it's a very good feeling when you get to connect the dots and little by little you start to see the design of it all . I started this search of mine roughly 25 yrs ago and within the last several months I've found several family members . I'm currently living in Monterrey , Mexico . I came here 5 yrs ago to spend one year doing research on the family line . I got a little side tracked and started a telecommunications business here and long story short two years later I still hadn't done any family searching . When I sold my shares of the biz I was heading home ( home being Marina de Rey , Ca. ) I was invited to start an organic fertilizer company and well , here I still am however I did start the search and like I said in the last several months I've done ok here with past family members but I never knew about the members that came from Zacatecas until recently .

Conquistadores

Does anyone know where I can get a book or a biographies on the following conquistadores who served with Hernando Cortez. They recieved Coat of Arms on the battlefield. Conquistador Juan del Camino or Diego del Camino both were relatives.

I found the following source cited on someone's website titled, "The Geneology of Mexico (http://members.tripod.com/~GaryFelix/index1.htm)." You might want to check it out. ;-)

They are not listed in either the Himmerich book or the Duaine book.

Check your special collections or Spanish/Mexican history section of your public library.
example "The Conquistadors" by Jean Descola translated by Malcolm Barnes
New York A.M. Kelley 1970 (c. 1952) Also the heraldry sections depending how extensive your library is will help. Then there are your university libraries that some libraries can borrow from. happy hunting. mari

Sending for Records from San Miguel El Alto

The LDS gave me an answer on the missing files from 1865 San Miguel El Alto. They said that either they had been overlooked or had been destroyed, but that I may write the church to see if they might have the missing 1865 records. She said I might also try the civil records, but the civil records did not start until after 1865! For those of you looking for records in San Miguel El Alto, please be aware that the film for baptisms 1865 is not complete. Only the first six months of 1865 are contained on the film. LDS said I might also try confirmations.

Maureen, I found the comfirmation records from Jerez Zacatecas good only for finding names, no age's or locations of birth. I've found 2 year olds and 40 year olds confirmed the same day. It appears from the older records the priest or bishop came from Zacatecas City and did everyone who wanted confirmation every few years. In fact some records read they were confirmed in the morning and others in the afternoon.. huge mass comfirmations. I hope your city gives you more information than mine did.. but then again, I'll gladly take whatever I can get!

Now for my questions. Does anyone know how or where to request historical records from the parish of San Miguel El Alto? Is there a cost involved and how much? If there is a cost, will an international money order work to send funds? I have sent for records in the States and also in the UK, but never for Mexico. Since my Spanish is limited at best, is there a form in Spanish that I may use? Last but not least, at what age were confirmations done in Mexico?

Thank you for any help. My aim is to track down Julian Alviso where ever he may be hiding! He is pretty good at this hide and seek game. Sooner or later he has to get tired of playing and come out of hiding.

Dear Linda:
Thanks for the heads up. I can only hope that San Miguel might have more than just names. What a shame. However, the marriage and baptismal records for Mexico are just wonderful. I have sent for Ohio marriage records and all it lists is the bride, groom and date. No way to tell if you have the right ones by matching up the parents names. For Mexico, we have so much more and even grandparents for baptismals as well as sometimes an aunt or uncle as a sponsor for a bonus, then their age too!

On the Jerezano confirmations it looks as if many of them (adults, that
is) getting confirmed in the morning was the padrino in the afternoon.

Confirmations

Maureen,

Linda is correct in that confirmation records only list the names of those being confirmed and their Godparents. That was the requirement per the diocese, not by the parish or local priest. In the 1600's, 1700's and the early 1800's it was per the decree of the Spanish court or La cedula real. Usually the bishop would travel to all the parishes to administer the Sacrament of Confirmation. It might take the bishop a few years to make it back to each parish again so you will find confirmation records anywhere from every 2 years to every 7-10 years. In some instances they might have to go to another church to be confirmed other than their own parish if the Bishop could not come to their town. In that case you would look in neighboring parishes for confirmation records but I wouldn't necessarily advise you to do that because the information you glean from that will be minimal.

Thank you Alicia,
I may skip ordering the confirmations as I have some many other films on my wish list and it gets expensive after a while. I try to go for the most info for my dollar. Hopefully Julian will show up somewhere or maybe one day a trip to Mexico .... I can hope.

Cuquio Jalisco

Thanks Smiley,

Now that you sent this I think we have driven this route once before, many many years ago and it was very narrow and very precarious due to the steep cliffs and dropoffs and very, very scary. That was long before I got into genealogy and paid attention to names of towns and their locations relative to our hometown of Nochistlan, Zac.

Saludos

...just thought I would place this link here so one can see the map, to make the reference. Fernando has already done the check and has noted the distance. I just wanted to add that this is a very long & winding way between main "pueblos." I have driven this route & it is a very dangerous road.
