Does anyone know where to find Bautimos (1665 - 1678) Santo Domingo Church of Zacatecas Ciudad?

I am talking to a Cronista of Zacatecas (historian) who is asking me if I know where bautismo records of the years 1665 - 1678 of the Santo Domingo Church of Ciudad Zacatecas, Mexico can be accessed?

I looked in the Family History Catalog for Zacatecas church records, and this is what the film notes for Sagrario state:

Notes:

Microfilme de manuscritos en el archivo de la parroquia.

La parroquia Sagrario antes se denominaba Santo Domingo.

Parish registers of baptisms, confirmations, marriages, and deaths from Sagrario Parish (formerly known as Santo Domingo), Zacatecas, Zacatecas, Mexico.

Includes a book of marriages performed in 1824-1829 in the dependent parish church of San Nicolás de Bernárdez.

This seems to be what you are looking for.

A quick look in the internet shows that this temple was founded on 1746, if there are some records of this specific area in that time, they are likely mix with the metropolitan church "sagrario", its a matter of manually checking those, which in turn happen to be the only ones going back to the 1600's in Zacatecas city.

thanks erlinda. luckily i found francisco's marriage record today. so yes the one who married ylaria martinez is the same one who married francisca saldivar.

also did you see my post on this thread about luis lopez?
i think his dad luciano maybe another son of casiano hipolito lopez and marcela alva
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=mexico&id=I48…

also i think casiano and marcela weren't from jerez/tepetongo. besides the fact luis was born in villa del refugio, my mom remembers being told that while felix was born in jerez, some of his family came from somewhere else. not sure where though exactly. he's kind of a mystery in that sense. it doesn't help that he died when my great grandma maria victoria was young.

Comentario

yeah i'm thinking it's quite possible they are the same person. but of course there's the possibility of 2 francisco's who happen to be brothers. for example one of my 4th great grandpas, celedonio, had two sons with the name francisco who made it to adulthood and had children of their own.

on another note: cosme's brother martin is my 4th great grandfather also

i happen to be descend from martin through his daughter antonia. antonia is the mother of my double great grandma jeronima carrillo.

also linda you made a mistake on who the parents of victor garcia mentioned on this link

Maria: actually I think is a very interesting detail, since is not that common (or a least not on the records I've seen) Its always good to find little clues here and there that at the end help us understand no just who our ancestors were but what environment and conditions they lived in.

Vicotoriano: that's interesting, but now that I found the record again it actually says "Cno." as you suggested before it looks like "Ciudadano." in this case the women are called "Madama" or just "Ma."

Just for the fun of it here it is the link to my record, on the right panel, second to first entry "Jose Ma. Bato", in those two pages there is no other entry with those titles, there are more "here and there" within that book though.

Comentario

I also came across a record with exactly the same titles, and also just for some specific records, at first glance I though it was the writer style but like this record as soon as I checked the continuous entries I realized it was for some specific people. I do suspect that this is kind of the equivalent of "Don" and "Doña" from the Spanish days in Mexico, probably used soon after the Independence but something that never got its way trough.

Comentario

Thank you for your comments. After I made my first post, I realized that Ursina (or Urcina) Arrieta was the daughter of Felipe Arrieta, the first "presidente municipal" of Jalpa, Zacatecas proceeding independence. I'm not trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill LOL, but this could be why the distinction.

After Independence in 1821 (or maybe until 1824 when Mexico became a Republic) C. meant ciudadano or citizen, since they were no longer subjects of a King, but it usually appears in all the records, not just in one. I had never seen the use of Madame in these records.

In 1675:

Antonio De La Campa y Cos was "Teniente de Capitan De Las Minas de Sombrerete"

Pedro De La Campa Y Cos was "Teniente De Capitan General De Las Costas De Nueva Galicia"

Supposedly the are brothers of "Fernando de La Campa Y Cos" who was born in 1676 in Burgos, Espana.

And son of Domingo De La Campa and Juliana Cos.

Fernando De La Campa Y Cos' brothers must have been a lot older than him.

Here in this link there is a reference that Antonio De La Campa y Cos was Governor of Nueva Galicia:

"1677

Here in the PARS website is the defunto record of "Juan Antonio Gutiérrez Terán"
He was the Alcalde of Sombrerete, Zacatecas, Mexico in 1693 when he recommended Don Fernando De La Campa Y Cos.

The reference number of the defunto is: CONTRATACION,5707,N.1,R.7

Just a note that when you go to the pars website and enter that reference number to go to the description page and click on it to go to the second description page before going to the document?

On that second description page to the left is a menu and submenu. clicking on the menu "Bienes de Defuntos" brings lists of names only of people that are defunto.
Which is easier to see all compacted into a group list and just keep clicking more to bring up more lists to quickly try to find who your looking for.

What did Rey Carlos De La Gracias De Dios have to do with Sombrerete in 1684?

Hello Madera,

No, the King did not visit Sobrerete, because no Spanish Monarch ever visited the Americas prior to their independence in the 19th century. In the 1680s, the King of Spain was Charles II (and last of the Hapsburg monarchs of Spain) But it was his prerogative to give and confirm political/judicial appointments. It was also customary before the French Revolution for European rulers to use their name, speak of themselves in the first person plural, and assert that they ruled by the Grace of God.

The document won't open for me, but usually all such documents if written at Court would start something like this:
"We, Charles, by the Grace of God, King of Castile, Aragon, Count of Barcelona, Emperor of the West Indies, etc. do confirm D. ____ in the office of ____."

In Spanish is would be:
"Nos, Carlos, de la Gracia de Dios, Rey de Castilla, Aragón, Conde de Barcelona, Emperador de la Indias Occidentals, etc. confirmamos a D. _______ en el oficio de ______."

Hope that helps!

Mariano Gonzalez Leal states in his book that Jose Maria Casillas and Lugarda Villalpando are the pair that was married in Jalostotitlan, Jalisco. The source he gave was my great uncle, my tio Rito Romo Franco. My Tio Rito Romo Franco kept meticulous records. When I was a child, through my early twenties, I often went on family visits with my Tio Rito where he would explain how the person we were visiting was related to us. Even though my Tio Rito Romo Franco took great notes and Mariano says he used this information to identify the parents of Francisco Casillas as the Jose Maria Casillas and Lugarda Villalpando married in Jalostotitlan, some of the people that my uncle identified as being closely related to me through my father's side are not related closely if these are truly the parents of Francisco Casillas Villapando. Or so I thought.
My Tio Rito Romo Franco identified these people as close relatives but I had believed this to be true only if Francisco Casillas Vallalpandos parents are Jose Maria Casillas Cabrera y Salgado and Lugarda Villalpando y Munoz de la Barba. I had completed the majority of my family tree for many generations so I felt that My Tio Rito Romo Franco was wrong one way or the other and thatThe close relationship to me is through one of my paternalgreat grandfathers to these Villalpando Munoz de la Barba.
The Jose Maria Villapando Salgado and and Lugarda Villalpando Munoz de la Barba that I had as Francisco Casillas Villapandos parents were married about the same time but in Tepatitlan Jalisco. My Tio Ritos wife, Maria de Jesus Barba Padilla is related to this Lugarda Villalpando

Most genealogists still follow Mariano's statement that the parents of Francisco Casillas Villalpando is the couple married in Jalostotitlan. since his reason for making this statement was my uncles records I felt that they were mistaken since I had repeatedly been told by my maternal uncle that these people were related to me through my father. From looking at my records i felt that Mariano and my uncle were wrong. But a couple of years ago, thanks to the dispenses brought to life by Claudia Casillas, I had stumbled on the dispensa on a De La Torre branch of my tree. It is by revisiting Jose Maria Casillas family tree and comparing it to this newly found dela torre branch that I finally found how my great great grandfather was related to this other Jose Maria Casillas and that my Tio Rito's identification of Jose Maria Casillas and Lugarda Villalpando was correct all along.

I don't think they were part of the Kingdom of Nueva Galicia, but rather separate provinces. They just were under the religious authority of the Bishop of Guadalajara since they did not have yet their own bishops.
I'm currently checking some Diócesis de Guadalajara microfilms from the 1700's where they mention "la cuidad de Monterrey, del Nuevo Reino de León, de este obispado", so, it is a city in a different Kingdom under the authority of the Bishop of Guadalajara. Nuevo León didn´t have its own bishop until 1776 when the Linares Diocese was established.

Seems like Juan Olivan Rebolledo traveled overseas in 1712 but had an esclavo name Juan Marcial. They traveld on a navio "Almiranta" I think it is a class type of a ship (pg 11):

But on pg 6 of that document it says "Galeon Almirante"

Mentions several times through out the document that Juan Olivan Rebolledo was "Oydor de La Audencia en Guadalajara de La Nuevo Espana"

I am interested in which records you were able to find the De Santiagos in Villanueva and Tabasco? I have a Catarina De Santiago daughter of Felipe De Santiago and Maria de la Candelaria Albares in Villanueva in 1803. The films that were available online did not show anything for bautismos though. I am related to the Sanchez de Porras family and I have put alot of research into them. Geronimo Sanchez de Porras, el Viejo's parents are Diego Sanchez de Porras and Elvira Sanchez. They were married in 1626 in Aguascalientes and had, to my knowledge, only one son. Geronimo was born in Aguascalientes in 1627.

I found that death record as well and I believe it to be that of Geronimo Sanchez de Porras's father. It is strange that the record says he is soltero.

I believe Jaime Holcombe discusses Elvira'a parentage in his letters.

Espero porder hacerlo pronto.

Apozol,Jalpa and Juchipila pre 1800

Hola Ruben,

I have also found records in Cuquio, Yahualica and Teocaltiche in Jalisco for Juchipila, Amoxochitl and Apozol prior to 1800. Search there.

For Jalpa specifically I wouldn't be surprised to find them in Nochistlan.

Hope that helps!

I am really interested in finding more Amoxochitl records.

Comentario

Hi Ruben,

La Villita in Jalpa is my primary area of research so I'm very familiar with the lack of records. That being said, I've been able to find documents from Jalpa related to my family going back to before 1690. I have collected some of the names in my webpage: www.arturogonzalez.com/ourfamilies/persons.html

I have together my family trees from various sources some of which are not available online: 1. 1820 Jalpa Census (order film), 2. marriage dispensations from the Guadalajara Diocesis and Jalpa Church (both online) as well as Jalpa civil records (online), 3. Tierra y Aguas archive (order films), and 4. 1819-1827 Marriage book (privately obtained).

Like I said, these various pieces of information helped identify my relatives, including my 8XGreat grandparents, going back into the 1600s. I also found many, many maps of the land grants given (and fought over) to the families of Jalpa and surrounding areas like Huanusco, Calvillo, La Villita, etc. With these old maps and surveys, I used Google maps to trace the original land grant.

Let me know if you have particular question and hopefully i can help you out.

Best, Arturo G.

Arturo, one last thing.

Are you familiar with the book "Census Records for Latin America and the Hispanic U.S." by Lyman de Platt

There is census records for Jalpa going back to 1760. If you are familiar with the book, do you know if we can view the microfilm online and does it even have family names?

There is a pdf page on this site under Files> Books and Articles> Census records for Latin America by Lyman Platt> Aguas Calientes y Zacatecas.

It only gives microfilm info.

Alicia Avelar Olmos de Carrillo
Ruben,
Historically, Juchipila and Jalpa were among the early towns that were settled during the colonial period, but unfortunately many of the records were lost or burned during the Revolution. My great aunt says her grandmother used to tell her stories of how they would enter the churches on horseback with torches and set the churches on fire in Jalpa. For about 10 years, I searched for records of my Olmos lineage and in January of 2012, I finally found a marriage record in Jalpa dating back to 1834. This was a big aha moment, knowing that my ancestors did not just appear out of the blue, their records are the ones that had disappeared. Most of my ancestors are from Nochistlan up until the early 1800's. As I trace further back, prior to Nochistlan, they were from Teocaltiche Jalisco and some were from Jalpa and still others from Tabasco or Villa del Refugio Mecatabasco. It's the ones who were from Jalpa that were elusive because of the lack of physical records.

Keep searching and in a roundabout way, you will find your family, that's how I was able to find mine.

Thank you Alicia, you put it best "Our ancestors did not just appear out of the blue"

I always figured these records existed at one point and probably destroyed during Revolution and Cristero Wars.

I will try nearby towns for clues.

Thanks
