Hello everyone,
I am trying to find info on Bernardo Villalobos and his first wife Juana D?valos and their 11 children. My great-grandmother Hermelinda Villalobos D?valos was born in Encarnaci?n de D?az, Jalisco around 1860 and married in Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco on 3 May 1877.
Bernardo Villalobos married a 2nd time and had another 11 children. I don't know anything else about the 2nd marriage.
I just realized I had written down the names Juan Villalobos and Altagracia Ibarra which I would have gotten from a cousin of my father. They are most likely the parents of Bernardo Villalobos.
Armando

I'm in the process of redoing one of the first baptism films I did when I started my search for my ancestors in Jerez Zacatecas 12 or so years ago. When I started reading records from Mexico my Spanish was really bad and trying to read a film from 1806 was truly beyond me, I just didn't know it! 12 years later I'm finding mistakes that are terrible and have left me wondering how many records I have shared with others that are in error? The one thing it has taught me is to use other peoples records as a base to start my own search. We can't take what people like me shared with good intentions but were in error as fact until we check it ourselves. Some errors are numbers like 2 instead of 12, others are my ignorance of the given names in Mexico during that time period.
I hope others new to researching take what we share but order the films and records for themselves to double check the information.
The film 0439849 Jerez baptism has many errors in it's own and I did my best at the time but now it's time to make corrections in my research. Progress not perfection is a good rule in genealogy.

Hello everyone, my name is Maria Gonzalez. I have been searching for my ancestros for a few years now. The majority of my family come from San Jose de Ojuelos and Cienega de Mata, Jal.
Maria,
Several members of the group descend from the same Macias-Valades line. Juan Macias-Valades was son of Joseph Macias Valades and Catalina de la Vega. I guess you must know that Juan married Juana Domingues (I got information on the Dominguez and Alonso de los Hinojos if you are interested). Sebastian Macias as you may know married Juana Gonzalez de Hermosillo daughter of Diego Alonso Gonzalez de Hermosillo and Juana Aldrete. We got lot of information on the Gonzalez Hermosillo line. Also you may know that from Juana Aldrete you will be connected to the Petronila Moctezuma line (reportedly the great-great grandaughter of Moctezuma II Aztec Emperor). Pedro Nolasco Macias married Maria de los Remedios (de los Reyes) Aranda. I have some information on the Martin Sotoymayor family of Maria. I have information on many of their children, including Manuel Ygnacio and his brother Jose Miguel (my family line). I will be happy to exchange information with you.
Sincerely
Jaime Alvarado

Hello everyone, my name is Maria Gonzalez. I have been searching for my ancestros for a few years now. The majority of my family come from San Jose de Ojuelos and Cienega de Mata, Jal. But I have found more family member in neighgboring areas like Sta. Maria de los Lagos, and Teocaltiche. The ones I am focus on at the moment is Lira and Masias. Pablo Lira (son1851), Bonifasio Lira marries Emiliana Romuala Masias (20 May 1812). Jose Masias (b1774), Manuel Ygnacio Masias-Balades (around 1750), Pedro Nocolasco Masias (around 1700), Sebastian Masias (around 1690), Juan Macias-Valades (around 1670) . All except Juan Masias that I know have been married in Cienega de Mata, Jalisco. I'm looking forward to learning from everyone with their thoughts and suggestions and to share what information I can bring to the group.

Hello Jaime
I am in awe with all this information. I did have the names of Juana's parents Juan Hernandez and Ana Domingues de los Hinojos but I haven't researched the films with Juana Domingues birth date. I have it as 11 Apr 1665 Ags. Is that what you have?
I do have a photocopy of Sevastian Macias-Valades and Juana Hermosillo marriage on 6 July 1710 from the LDS library. I still have to verify on the birth date of Juana Alderte, the date I have of her christening is 10 Jan 1689. Do you have the same? I had no idea about the connection of Juana Alderte to Moctezuma II. How did you find it? Is it in the LDS films? Do you any books that you might recommend for research? For the children of Pedro Nolasco Macias and Ma Remedioz Aranda I have,
Manuel Ygnacio (?1750); Francisco Antonio (?); Joseph de la Trinidad, b.16 Jan 1746; Juan Antonio c.20 Jan 1748; Ma. Antonia Theodora (?). Well that's all I have at the moment. Thank you for sharing. I hope to communicate further.
Sincerely,

HI María, Im glad we have a new member to our great group, we are already related, I also descend from the Macías-Valadés like many alteños here. Juan was married 12 jun 1693 in Aguascalientes to Juana Gómez de Espejo, we were actually talking about this not too long ago. Well I can send what I have tomorrow, Juan was son of José de M. y V.
and Catalina Tavera de la Vega (aka: Rubio) (we can give an entire explanation as to the AKA's for many Spanish people of the time) People could have used any numerous last names. Juana Gómez de Espejo was daughter of Juan Hernández y Gamiño and Ana Domínguez, I believe Juana used her grandmother's name, if im not mistaken, I can check. *Note Juana did not use her father's name but her grandmother. Ill send you a file with all my stuff starting with Pedro Nolasco, Im mostly useful and helpful within the 1500s-late 1700's. I have a huge alteño family database so I can try helping you with other lines If you'd like, I dont want to keep all this stuff to myself, we need to share so we can keep growing our tree. I learned citing is important! -Daniel Camino

Hi Daniel, thanks for the information. Can you direct me where to start reading up on the explanation as to why and how the Spanish people would use AKA's. I would like to read up on the states of Jalisco and Aguascalientes. Thanks again, M Gonzalez
Im glad it helps, Im not sure where or if there is such a book about specifially the AKA. I know Retoñs just explain where each person got the AKA. "El apellido que utilizó por su abuela..something typical youd read. Well to get to he point, before the indepndence of Spanish America, there were no rules of surnames, not even the typical father mother combo. Until the Borbón Reforms it was placed. Take this family Rodrigo Olivares and María Hurtado de Mendoza, hey had Catalina, Francisca and Isbael Hurtado de Mendoza and Bernabé Olivares, notice all daughters take mother's name. Isabel is named after her grandmother the GREAT isabel I Hurtado de Mendoza. Many Ranchos members can trace to her several times. I trace to her on 12 different time, alteños intermarried too Much. LOL. Also the children could take which ever side was more important or prominant. If both were of equal, then they could combine last names. The original Hurtado de Mendoza broke into about 7 different families all contain Mendoza,
Hurtado de Mendoza, Gómez de Mendoza, Gutiérrez de Mendoza, Sánchez de Mendoza, de Ornellas y Hurtado de Mendoza, de Alcalá y Hurtado de Mendoza, López de Quezada y Mendoza. Most of the families in Los Altos also happend like this, creating different new names must have been a joy. I hope this helps. Also you may here Los Altos family, Yes the main Los Altos de Jalisco is a region but its family (alteños) extend into southern Zacatecas, northeast Zacatecas (pinos area), Aguascalientes, Guanjuato, Northwestern michoacán, southern Jalisco and to Guadalajara. This is because the rapid movement and travel Alteños did, taking them their blood alteño. -Daniel

Tecnically its legal I just cant sell it or profit from it.
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research. " -Daniel

Hi, I have the info, María Tavera de la Vega is daughter of Antonio Ramírez de Tavera and Leonor Rubio, Leonor Rubio was daughter of Francisco Gutiérrez de la Vega and Ana González y Florida. This is the key part. Francisco was son of Diego González de la Vega and María Rubio. María Tavera also used María Rubio y Godínez, dont know where the last part comes in?, just like Leonor Rubio's grandmother. Rubio passed maternally. This also happened many times in the family, Rubio was popoular among the woman of the great alteño family. We also know this because all the Tavera's come from Antonio, he had three sisters. Your María ca. 1625 Antonio Tavera born 1592 or so. I have eight kids in total for Antonio and Leonor Rubio. -Hope this helps. Daniel Camino

Hello, Im just putting this out here does anyone know who is Bartholomé Martín who married María Sánchez de Mendoza daughter of Marta Sánchez de Mendoza and Juan Sánchez de Lara back in the ear
Daniel,
On Ancestry.com, there is a family tree which includes Bartolome Martin del Campo (b: 1574)Revilla de Campos, Revilla, Espana; parents: Juan Martin de Campos (b:1547) and Maria Antonia Antolin (b:1549); Juan's parents: Blas Martin del Campo and Antonia de la Torre; Maria Antonia's parents:Juan Antolin and Toribia Simon; Toribia's parents:Alonso Simon and Juana Giron. I've attached the link. These are the parents I had listed initially for Bartolome.

Hello, Im just putting this out here does anyone know who is Bartholomé Martín who married María Sánchez de Mendoza daughter of Marta Sánchez de Mendoza and Juan Sánchez de Lara back in the earyl 1600s and late 1590s? Is Bartholomé Martín the same as Bartholomé Martín del campo? -Daniel
Daniel,
I have reviewed the baptism registry for Bartolome Martin. Source 0227520, Batch J605093, Dates 1544-1608, Sagrario Metropolitano. It is dated September 11, 1567. Father: Pablo Martin, Mother: Maria de Campos: Padrinos: Antonio Perez y su mujer Leonor Marquez. In the same film I found Maria Martin dated July 23 1573. It is too hard to read the rest of the entry on Maria but I can see that the parents are also Pablo Martin and Maria de Campos. My guess, without further investigation, is that Bartolome Martin and Bartolome Martin del Campo are the same. I tried to attach it to an earlier message, but was unsuccessful. I also tried to download it through "Create Content." If you do not already have it, I can e-mail it to you directly.

Please Eloise send me a copy, i was stuck on this line b/c someone on genealogia de Mexico stated thar Bartolome Martin del campo was son of juan Martin del Campo and Antonia Atolini. Bartolome was said to have been from Palencia in los Reino de Castilla, but there isnt evidence ive seen? Have you been able to find a marriage for him and Maria Sanchez?

Dear Nuestros Ranchos members,
I have a question regarding our recent DNA sample submitted to Family Tree DNA. We submitted a sample and have received the MTDNA, for HVR1 and HVR2.
Yes, 1 of 4 different samples (four different male lines) came back with a
need for SNP testing after they had already run two samples. My
understanding is that they did not have enough close matches in their bank
of data to clearly define the haplogroup. In that case it ended up to be
Haplogroup Q, but with no matches thus far. I have found the staff there
very willing to explain the issues involved, so call or email them. One
time I had to wait several days for a call-back, but it came.

Alicia,
I had My Y DNA at Family Tree. Due to the unlikely result they did a
Backbone SNP that they did not charge me for. I recall that part of
this test is to rule out other haplogroups. Although records show my
paternal line originates in San Luis Potosi, the actual origin showed
Haplogroup O, originating in South Asia, probably the Phillipines.
This is not found in the native American population.
I'd be curious to hear the result of your brother's test

That's good to know, I'll let everyone know the outcome of the Backbone SNP test when we receive the results.
Have a good holiday everyone, and let's not forget to remember and give thanks for our war veterans.

Subject: Re: [Nuestros Ranchos] DNA, Backbone SNP TEST
Alicia,
I had My Y DNA at Family Tree.

They indicated they could not predict his haplogroup therefore they will be running his DNA sample through what they call Backbone SNP. Have any of you experienced this? Is this common or is this an anomaly?

My grandfather Rodolfo Gama was born around 1910 in Tamazula de Gordiano, Jalisco. His sisters were Maria Gama born on Nov 25, 1906 and Tomasa Gama born on Oct 2, 1904 in Tamazula. Their parents were Jose Crus Gama born Sep 14, 1873 in Arandas and Rosario Cruz.
Jose Crus Gama had many siblings: Micaela (DOB 1880, San Miguel el Alto), Antonio (DOB 1881), Brigida (DOB 1883, Union de San Antonio), Ysabel (DOB 1885, Union de San Antonio), and Eustacio (DOB 1888, Union de San Antonio). Their parents were Jose Ysabel Gama and Ramona Munos who were married on June 1, 1879 in San Miguel el Alto. Jose Ysabel Gama was the child of Manuel Gama (unknown DOB, estimated 1830) and Felipa Ramirez (unknown DOB, estimated 1830).
I do not know much about my grandfather Rodolfo Gama because my grandmother left him in 1942. They were married in 1939 and lived in Manzanillo, Colima.

Linda,
Thank you so much for all your work in sharing the Jerez records.
I would like to thank Linda Castanon-Long for being so generous in the time that she took to diligently transcribe the Jerez baptism records from the end of the 19th century. She has also been generous enough to post them on our website for all users to download and read at their leisure.
The files can be found in the Files Section under Reference Materials:

Me gustaria darle las gracias a Linda Castanon-Long por ser tan generosa con el tiempo que ha dedicado a transcribir en forma tan diligente los registros de bautismo de Jerez, Zacatecas del fin del siglo XIX. Tambien ha sido tan generosa como para compartir las transcripciones y cargarlas a nuestro sitio para que todos los miembros puedan descargarlas y leerlas a su propio tiempo.

I justed wanted to add to the group that I have used Google books for my research. I have Googled people and in fact I've been Googled. Like any search engine it is always best to tailor your search using quote marks. It filters out the junk. While working on my last project I found that my great-great grandfather converted to the Presbyterian religion and was the first church elder in Irwindale, California around 1900. I had found OLD Presbyterian journals in Google books with articles about my g-g grandfather and pictures of the rock church, which still stands to this day.
Google books is always worth a try and if you can't view the book online, at least you have the book information and try to order it on interlibrary loan through the local county library.

I am looking to buy a copy of La Sagrada Mitra de Guadalajara by Luz Montejano Hilton but George Farias' bookstore (Borderlands Books) no longer has it available and I cannot seem to find it anywhere.
I got a message from George Farias at Borderlands Books telling me that he has been trying to contact Luz Montejano for some time now to get more copies of the Sagrada Mitra de Guadalajara but has not been successful. If someone has a way of contacting her, please let George and me know.
I do not know where to find the book but there is a search that you can do
to see if your surname is in the book and how many times it is mentioned. It
looks like it is pretty reliable but I am not sure because I did a search
for Avila and the search said there were 30 pages where Avila was mentioned
but the index in the back of the book has 46 individuals. Some of the
individuals appear on the same page but I am not about to go through the
whole list to see how reliable this search is. Regardless, here is the URL
in case you want to try it out:

Eduardo:
Thank you for the link. I did not know that the book was up on Google books. I have a copy of the book but being able to search through the scan may prove useful nevertheless.
That being said, the book is not for me. It is for the microhistorian (cronista) of Totatiche who is a very diligent researcher who has published numerous books and spent immeasurable hours at archives in Guadalajara, which have benefited me and many other genealogy researchers of the region immensly. He wants a copy that he can hold and sift through as he is so good at doing and given the great debt I owe him, I was hoping to get him one.
Arturo,
I want to clarify and I am sorry if I somehow said something misleading: Google Books is not showing the images of Luz Montejano's book, just a few small sections of the page where the surname appears. There are no full page images, (that would probably be a copyright infringement.) However, Google books has made a sort of index of the surnames that is accessible online. Searches: return the amount of pages where the surname appears in the book. So once someone knows that their surname appears in the book then they can search the actual book or have someone search it for them.
I hope this helps to understand what Google books has and has not done with Luz Montejano's book.
Saludos desde Lago Salado,
Eduardo H Seoane
I just learned about Google Books at a lecture by a person that runs the web site googleyourfamilytree.com. He is not affiliated with Google in any way but he has a lot of great hints on how to use Google to research your family history-mostly free since Google doesn't charge for most features. One thing that may be of assistance to us is that if you are looking for a book on a specific subject you can go straight to Google books and weed out everything (like sites, images, etc)but books which decreases your number of hits. If they have the book, they may have the entire book or just pages but since it's in pdf format you can do a keyword search and it will highlight your words. This is especially helpful if the book is in a language in which you are not fluent. This is probably basic stuff for experienced researchers but for newbies/"nuevas" (is that correct?)like me it was helpful information that I would like to pass on.

Arturo,
Luz Montejano Hilton posts lots of messages in the various message boards. She lives in Mexico City and probably someone at the Archives there can tell you how to contact her. She might even be able to get a copy or lend a copy to the cronista. She used to e-mail me back, but then she stopped, and I never heard from her again. She only speaks Spanish even though her surname is not Hispanic.
