I've heard "taruga" and "tarada" growing up too. "Tonta" is another
synonym. I have to admit I call my own kids some of those names from
time to time. Just trying to keep the tradition going... :)

I wonder if it's because our culture hasn't gotten on the politically
correct bandwagon? I thought about that when President Fox made that
statement about our gente taking jobs "that even Blacks won't take".
The Mexican response to the American one was that it wasn't meant to
offend. Understanding our cultura the way I understand it I knew that
to be true. However, Fox was criticized because; as some pointed out,
he was educated here in the States and should've known better.

p.s. Another word that I remember hearing is "vaquetón". This one
means rascal or something along those lines.

Olague DNA

the Olague surname.

Ask the Mom to talk to the son. Try and convince her of its importance.
Maybe come at it from the perspective that it will be a way to always
remember their dad.

how about get up a picture of the dad and make up a real nice frame
with a 5 x 7 picture of the dad in one 1/4 of the frame. in the next
1/4 of the frame a 8 x 11 tree chart tracing the father back however
far you have him. in one other 1/4 of the frame a simple "genealogy
report" and then leave the last 1/4 blank  which will "one day" include
the Dad's DNA results once the son agrees to submit them for testing.

DNA discussion

Joseph,

You are probably right. It must be the 12 marker. I was speaking
off the top of my head and probably got it wrong. He did it on his
own, before Gary Felix had anything posted about it on his website.

Well, I hesitate putting out there in a public website without
getting his permission. I thought it would be okay to post it here
because this is a smaller, more private group. Maybe I'll mention it
to him again.

He might be more apt to posting it if Gary invites him to join. It
won't be his pesky sister telling him what to do. ;)

did he do it thru the Felix study or just on his own? I haven't heard of
the 9 marker test. Was this awhile back? I thought that 12 was minimum,
but probably my lack of knowledge is showing through.

I did mention it to him, but either he's
not interested or it just slipped his mind. I have a copy of the
results and would be interested in posting the results on this site if
Joseph decides to collect that data.

Well I think it would be better to let Gary Felix know about it and post
it there. I would be willing to post the results in the files area but
truthfully they would be there only to encourage other members to
consider doing their own DNA study. On Gary Felix's site he could guide
you and help with some understanding and other readings to get up to
speed on the subject if you

I've heard "tarugo"  and "tarado".
Tarugo as in "como eres tarugo"   Not being very smart,  almost
like "como eres menso".  Tarugo, tarado, and menso are used in about the
same context.

I know, I've been called all three at different
times!

"Tarayata" sounds linked to "taragua" which I was often called because I
was considered lazy when I was younger - I simply didn't enjoy doing the
household chores while my brothers were out playing :).  Perhaps the
"tara" portion is the relationship in a similar base language, which be in
this area of discussion!

mt dna testing - How is it done

Thank you Victor and everyone else who shared info on dna and mtdna.  It looks like time will make the tests even more affordable and understandable for the layman..

In doing the records provided by the LDS centers on the marriages, births, baptisms and deaths of our Mexican Ancestors I've gathered information that only mtdna and dna tests will prove or disprove.  Mainly the discovery of African Ancestors that my Mexican born family insist never occurred!  Telling them that Mulato Esclavos married Indios who then married Espanol's doesn't seem to make believers of them..We are obviously Mestizo's and I hope to prove we are all Mexico had to offer!  I only wish I had reason to think I have Jerish origins too but I don't. Oh well, I can't have it all!  I did find Mulato's in my lines in Zacatecas (Alcala/Seranoo)  and Jalisco (Figueroa/Rolon) in the 1700's.

On a side note, I went to Mexico for the first time 2 years ago and tried to find records of birth and marriage for my

Genealogia Diaz del Castillo/Martin del Campo

Hola Francisco,

Tengo mucho interes en ver tu información genealogica. Yo tengo

Saludos,

María Cortez
