Juan Cristobal,

My husband is a descendant of the de Albas, Martins, Perez, Magdaleno, and Garcia from Jalisco. Maybe you and he are related in some way? They were in Encarnacion de Diaz in the 1800s. Some of his ancestors also came from San Juan and Lagos.

Emilie,

Almost all the family of my father come from Encarnación de Diaz, San Juan, Lagos and Aguascalientes.
If you give the name of the grant grand parents and grand parents of your husband, maybe we can know if we are relatives.
I have information from the San Juan de los Lagos "de Alba" since 1600s for the Perez since 1700s.
The name of the grand father of my father is Pastor Perez Lozano, the husband of Maria de los Angeles de Alba Jimenez that mention in my first mail.
The parents of Pastor were: Jose Guadalupe Perez(b.1825) and Ma de la Cruz Lozano Perez(b.9may 1828 in Encarnacion).

Thanks for your comments and the information from Thomas Alva Edison.

No, that is a myth. Alva was a common given name in America, and in the case of Thomas Alva Edison, he may have been given that name to honor someone that had that as a surname. I have also heard of another myth, that Walt Disney was Spanish, born in Spain as a Sephardic Jew, but that has proven false also.

Luis Miguel,

Of course you wouldn't know any American or Canadian or Englishman with that name. If you are from Mexico, Alva or Alba is known to you only as a surname, not a given name. Many Albas or Alvas in Mexico have claimed Thomas Alva Edison as their relative. I find some of those stories coming from Sombrerete, Zacatecas, and now Lester thinks it came from Coahuila. You say the story came from Lagos in Jalisco. Even some people with the surname Alvarez think that his name was really Alvarez. Someone in Jalisco said that a woman from there claimed to be his grandmother, and her surname was Alvarez.

According to John Burton, a descendant of Thomas Alva Edison, the birth of Thomas was recorded in two of their family bibles. Ohio did not require births to be registered in an official civil registry prior to 1870. He was born in Milan, Ohio, the last of seven children. He was named after a Captain Alva Bradley, from Canada, a friend of the family. Captain Bradley's first name was Alva. I have seen Alva used as a first name in several lists of English people. I think people in Mexico find it hard to believe that Alva can be someone's first or middle name and not their surname because in Mexico it is used only as a surname. Some people in Mexico even have said that his name was Tomas de Alba de Edison, thinking the way they do in Mexico that he used his father's name and then his mother's name, but his father was an Edison. His mother was an Elliott. In Mexico he would be known as Tomas Edison Elliott. See?

Perhaps people in Mexico want Thomas Alva Edison to be Mexican so badly because he was one of the most famous and best scientists the world has ever known. But there are too many stories from so many parts of Mexico, and not from Spain, where Alba is a common surname, that it gets less and less credible as time goes on. My husband is a descendant of the Albas or de Albas in Encarnacion de Diaz, Jalisco, and in my research I have never run into any evidence that the inventor was born in Jalisco or anywhere in Mexico.

So, the story to me is a myth, like the one about Walt Disney. I don't know where that story came from, but that is another myth.

Hi there Emilie ,

Just to keep things in perspectice I would like to clear things up at least for my part .

I did not say that I believe that Thomas was from Coahuila , I stated that people from there mentioned it to me . So, let's not blow this out of porportion and read correctly what is written .

Until someone can prove otherwise he's from the good ol US of A !

Take care,
Welester

I found the family of Thomas Alva Edison listed in the Census of 1850 for Milan, Erie County, Ohio.

Samuel Edison age 45, born in Nova Scotia
Nancy Edison age 40, born in New York
William P. age 19, born in Canada
Harriet V. age 16, born in Canada
Alana [?] (male) age 3, born in Ohio
Stephen Elliott age 55, born in Conn [Connecticut?]

That little 3 year old boy must really be "Alva", not Alana, and he was born in 1847, the year Thomas was born. This family is also listed in later American censuses, so it doesn't look like any of them ever went to Mexico.

It seems to me that we have discussed Tom a good bit. He is resting
peacefully (I hope) so maybe we can let him rest for awhile, what do you
think? But if someone finds a good baptism record or tantalizing piece
of factual information showing evidence to old Tom's Mexican roots well
please bring it on. Why don't we give him a bit of a rest for now or
possibly take it to private email. As always I'm not telling folks what
to do just thinking that this might be best for all.

Hello Cristobal,

I live 30 min away from San Juan de los Lagos, in Valle de Guadalupe, and I have also heard that same story from the older people here that Thomas Alba Edison was born somewhere in Los Altos and that he went to live to the US when he was young. It would be nice to lookup his birth certificate to see who his parents were.

Hello to all the primos de nuestros ranchos.

In the last weeks a received a lot of help of several of you that help me a lot to increase my trees.

Now I have a new question, My father told me that his grand mother for his mother side, mention to him, that Tomas Alva Edison was son of one of his relative De Alba from the San Juan de los Lagos.
Someone Know something about?

Ma de los Angeles De Alba Jimenez (1852-1940)is the grandmother of my father, she was born in San juan de los Lagos
Her Father was Jose Anacleto de Alba y Perez Franco(b.1826) and her Felicitas del Refugio Jimenez Magdaleno(b.1834).
Her GrandParents for the father side are Jose Maria Martin De Alba Perez Franco(b.1798) y Ma. Antonia Felipa Perez Franco y Garcia(b.1801).

Best regards
J. Cristobal Villalobos Lomelín.

Hi everybody ,

I heard from people that live in Parras , Coahuila that Thomas Alva Edison is from there , go figure .

In my recent request for help I posted a plead for help but, I mispelled the last name of the monjita , it is URZUA from Cienega de Mata , Ojuelos , Jalisco . Her Great Grandfather was Vida Urzua and his wife was Agapita Lopez .

Can anyone help her out with more info on the family line ?

Thanx ,

Welester

Not a problem , to tell you the truth that has been a rumor in Santiago for a very long time but no one has ever been able to prove it .
I am in contact with several people there that are historians and genealogist and not one of them can even state what the gentleman has stated to you .

Oh well , my family there are Tamez, Saldivar , Almaguer and of course Alvarado they all are very fair of skin and blue eyes and then we start to shade down sort of . ;-)

I had been wondering about Quezada surname in your rootsweb database, what was your source? ´Cause it brings out my curiosity that in this, my era, I always knew my last name is Leon, then about three years ago I found out about the Cos or Coss from my research in films, and then and last I met the Quezada added to Coss Y Leon in your data. So, what is the source?

Comment

Quezada in the early films from Silao I have seen Quezada and Coss y Leon, Coss, Cos, Leon, use interchangably not sure where we get Quezada but must be in Aragon prob a grandfather. Mariano Gonz. Leal is said to publicate research about this family in one of coming volumes, so we will have to wait what he says. Im sure hes also seen Quezada. I will try to get the exact film numbers so you can see Quezada for yourself. -Daniel

Fw: RE: The original GARCIA last name is "GARCIA DE ALBA"

Hi, All,
I've been having problems with my e-mail so I'm hoping this time I reach someone.

A few days ago I sent the attached information to Gloria Fuentes and (I thought) to Nuestros Ranchos;  but I have not seen it posted with the rest of the correspondence, and I don't think Gloria got it either;  so I'm re-sending it.  Hopefully this time I have the right   address(es) and it gets posted in the general correspondence.

Macias in Jalpa

Amelia, I have the civil records from Jalpa from 1887 - 1895. I am almost
done with them. Where do you live? Perhaps instead of returning them, if you
live close by, LDS will allow me to forward them to a LDS center near you.

Comments

Comment

I'm almost 100% certain that the LDS won't allow transferring of films
like this but what is the worst that can happen so go ahead and ask. It
could be that they might make an exception, who knows.

Arturo gave some great paths to follow in finding the names of your
grandparents. I'd agree that finding the full names of your grandparents
is your immediate goal because I'm almost positive that your grandfather
was not only a Jose Macias but probably a Jose _____ Macias and your
grandmother a Maria _____ Tostado. If you get their full names then you
might be able to find some of your fathers older siblings baptism
records on that one film that ends in 1919. Yes you have some home work
to do right in the Jalpa records before you expand to other areas, but
yes the other areas will be sources to pursue in time.

Meche,

When you say you are almost done with the Jalpa civil records from 1887-1895, does this mean you have copied all the files onto a compact disc?

Meche & Amelia,

I'm also interested in researching the Jalpa records. The last names that I'm working with are Silva, Duran, Chavez & Sanchez. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the tips Arturo. I really appreciate it as I am new to doing
research in Mexico. What is FHL? I have not seen that reference.

You are in for a bit of a rocky ride because it appears that the baptism
documents from Jalpa for the relevant period (1860-1880) are not filmed by
FHL. I don't know if they were destroyed or simply not filmed. In any
case, you will have to look somewhere else.
>

The birth certificate or baptism record of your father/mother should list
this and if it is a Mexican birth certificate or baptism record, it should
also list the grandparents' names in which case you would have your
great-grandparents' names.

be a border crossing record with his/her parents' names and date and place
of birth.

Hi Ruben, no I am not that sophisticated. I looked through the micro fiche
film manually. From 1891, for the most part, the paternal and maternal
grandparents are recorded but prior to that you only have parents, and witnesses. I
should have started with the church records first but I didn't. As I said, I am
almost done with those years and will be returning them soon, however, if you
have a specific person and know what year they were born, I will more than
happy to see if I can find it.

Hello J.Guadalupe Jaime Chavez

Well, as my surname indicates, I am a Chavez and also a Sanchez and a Duran.
What part of Jalpa are your relatives from? My relatives, as far as I know,
are from El Ojo de Agua, Jabonera and La Pitahaya and maybe from a rancho
called El Aguacate.

Lupe,

I think you belong to the Vicente Chavez clan. Vicente Chavez and Daniel
Chavez (my great grandfather), I believe where first cousins, have not confirmed
this yet but almost certain. Anyway, if you indeed are from the descendants
of Vicente Chavez, then I will tell you that I did not find any records of him
until late 1895's. I found records of my great grandfather Daniel Chavez in
Jalpa since 1880.

There is a connection of between these Chavez and a rancho called El
Aguacate, which is somewhere in a remote area in of Jalpa because a man by the name
of Serafin Chavez in Jalpa told me this last year and I also confirmed in the
records I have reviewed.

Let me know if I am correct and I will share more information.

Later,

Mercedes

Lupe,

Actually I have that information, but currently I am remodeling my house and
don't have that information handy. In my research I ran across a birth record
of one of his children in late 1897 -1903 and made a copy of it. It has his
parents and his wife's parents names that is how I realized he was not brother
to Daniel Chavez but most likely his first cousin. I made a copy of it
because further in my research if they are indeed first cousins then I have too
leads to go by. Also, I believe Vicente Chavez Sanchez was also related to my
great-grandmother Emiteria Sanchez Flores. I go to the family research center on
Thursdays. Next week, I will look it up again and send you the info.

If you are serious about doing geneology then we can work together on this
and eliminate double and perhaps triple work becuase our lineage crosses with-in
the fourth or fifth generation. It won't be an easy task because many
records are missing from Jalpa.

Last year when I went to Jalpa, I met Pedro Chavez' second wife Dona Lupe who
now lives at El Ojo de Agua.

Espero y no te haya confundido!

Hola Lupe,

Ya tengo como un ano (sorry I can't get the squigley line over the n) y a

What I said was, "I find some of those stories coming from Sombrerete, Zacatecas, and now Lester thinks it came from Coahuila. You say the story came from Lagos in Jalisco".

I didn't say you said Thomas was from Coahuila, just that the story also came from there. The Edison descendant said he wouldn't care if Thomas was born in Mexico if he was, but he knows he wasn't. Why should it be proved otherwise?

Emilie,

Maybe you can't see where you are implying that I believe that Thomas comes from Coahila but , when a person says " I THINK " that implies that they may believe it or may believe it to be TRUE .

I, in no way THINK or BELIEVE this to be true or possible .

As for the proof , don't you think as a genealogist you've learned that word of mouth cannot be enough we all look for documents and or in this case as someone mentioned a DNA test .

Hopes this clears up some of the issues here Emilie . Let's end this one here , OK .

Take care,

Just had to put my 2 cents worth in.. This dialogue shows how many of us who are working on documenting the truth that may change the family stories is sometimes uncomfortable or unwelcome by older family members.  Oral traditions usually have at least a grain of truth and when we discover records disproving the stories/history that the elders have shared it is not always received with open arms. Most people don't like to be told things that change their truth as they have known it.

In my Castanon family we have had a family reunion once a year for the last 30 years.  I usually share what I've found that year proving or disproving our history from the district of Jerez Zacatecas.. I have learned to temper what I share since it is not always welcome.

My research proved we were not French or German as I was told by my grandfather. My researched showed my gr-grandparents were cousins, that certainly was not welcomed since my Fathers generation knew them and just knew that "good" Catholics did not marry their cousins.  My researched proved Mulato and Indio ancestors and the elders knew that couldn't be true since a black person never lived in the district of Jerez Zacatecas!

In my case I am the last generation that understands or speaks any Spanish at all so I felt I was the one most able to do the research that future generations might not be able to do as easily.  I also know that research usually means the most to those of us who've done the work, put in the time and money and shared openly and freely what the documentation has proved to us.. and then again... documentation is not always correct since we've seen many errors in records and have to almost see a name at least twice to feel we have proved the truth..  just my 2 cents worth.

I apologize if I misinterpreted what you had said.

What I was trying to point out to people in Mexico who think that Alva Edison was a surname, is that in America men used old-fashioned given names out of the Bible, and that in Mexico he would have been known as Thomas Alva Edison Elliott.

I found Thomas listed originally in a census as Alvah, and it comes from the Bible, Chronicles 1: "The chiefs of Edom were: chiefs Timna, Alvah, Jetheth, 52 Oholibamah, Elah, Pinon, 53 Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar, 54 Magdiel, and Iram; these are the chiefs of Edom".

Hi Emilie ,

Lets' start all over . Hi , My name is Welester G. Alvarado it's indeed a pleasure to know you and there is absolutely no need for you to apoligize .

I am an American from Los Angeles , California now living in Monterrey , Mexico . I came here almost 7 yrs. ago to find my roots . I was only going to stay here for one year and ended up going on 7 .

In the process I started two companies and still haven't finished my genealogy . I found some of my ancestors from Zacatecas ( Saldivar , Trevino maybe Alvarado ) . Esther Herold helped me connect the dots from there to Monterrey .

Take care ,

Espero tu respuesta.

I am conducting research on the Cano's from Arandas, Ayo el Chico and Rancho Corrales and Rancho Cabrito in los Altos de Jalisco. If anyone is doing research on Cano's in this area please contact me so that we can share information. I am doing research on Rafael Cano born on Rancho Corrales about 1782 and his father Vicente Cano a resident of Rancho Corrales born about 1758. I would appreciate your assistance. Also does anyone know who the main branch or first Cano to arrive in this area of Jalisco might have been. Thank you. Luis Cano (lcanogalavizedu@yahoo.com)

Surname: Macias

My name is Amelia Macias. I'm trying to get information on relatives on my father's side of the family. At this time, I have very little information to go on, but hope that as I research chruch records, and known relatives that I may be able to supply information in more detail.

Amelia:

Welcome to the group. I am sure you will find lots of people here willing to help you with your search.

Genealogy is all about establishing a paper trail that you can follow. You are in for a bit of a rocky ride because it appears that the baptism documents from Jalpa for the relevant period (1860-1880) are not filmed by FHL. I don't know if they were destroyed or simply not filmed. In any case, you will have to look somewhere else.

The first place to start is to find out your grandmother's last name. The birth certificate or baptism record of your father/mother should list this and if it is a Mexican birth certificate or baptism record, it should also list the grandparents' names in which case you would have your great-grandparents' names.

The other place to look is border crossing records and social security death records. If your mother/father immigrated from Mexico, there should be a border crossing record with his/her parents' names and date and place of birth.

http://content.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx=List&dbid=1082

Likewise if your grandfather or father/mother received social security and has passed away, the Social Security Administration will supply you with their social security registration which should likewise list their parents' names and date and place of birth.

http://www.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=3693

The FHL does have civil registry films for marriages between 1900 and 1910 for Jalpa so that may also be a good bet. The marriage registry should list Jose Macias' and ??? Tostado's parents' names.

Matrimonios 1900-1905 VAULT INTL Film 773885
Matrimonios 1906-1909 VAULT INTL Film 773886
Matrimonios 1910-1912,1918-1920 VAULT INTL Film 773887

Good luck.

Amelia, I inquired regading marriage certicates at the main church in Jalpa,
last year. Unfortuntely, before 1910 they do not have the records but the
lady told me that surrounding towns might have them, so it will be a struggle.
You might, check out films from LDS regarding surrounding towns, for example
Juchipila was at a time the main town where the records where kept.

Primo Joseph, Good to hear from you, and hopefully, all is well after the recent storms. I have been following the recommendation as posted, do believe by David Delgado, of ordering copies from Salt Lake.
On the Family Search site there is a form, "Request for Photocopies", For two dollars, with a maximum of 8 copies per order you will receive a 11X14 copy of the actual document, which certainly beats the poor quality available at the local FHC.

I have been receiving my request in about two weeks time, and since most of my request have been one item per film, beats ordering an entire film for a single record. Also, many of the films I had ordered were months on back order. This is a wonderful service.

Helyn

John Gonzalez,

A while ago you mentioned a book by Martha Duron Jimenez.

I am wondering if you know of a book of hers that lists her Duron ancestors.

One of my husband's lines are the Durons of Aguascalientes.

Hi Emilie:

I am sorry but I don't have any knowledge of Profesora Martha Duron Jimenez
having written any books about her own family.
She has author and co-author a number of books and studies, but I don't
recall seeing anything about the "Duron" She has done a lot of research on
Santo Toribio Romo Gonzalez family in addition to historical research in
Saltillo and Los Altos de Jalisco.
It is very possible that she has also researched her own family, but I can't
be sure.
Maria Cortez, from San Jose, has a close, friendly relation with Martha
Duron. You might want to contact Maria to find out more about Profesora
Duron.

I am sorry I couldn't be of any help this time.

John Gonzalez.

I don't know if you sent this e-mail to me specifically or to the group in general, but since I am a Garcia, here's what I know about my Garcia side:
---Zaturnino GARCIA is my father's name and he was born in Monte Redondo, baptized in Cruillas, Tamaulipas.  I have not been able to get any information on either of his parents or grandparents except for what appears on his birth certificate:
-his parents were Ascencion GARCIA and Felisitas HERNANDES,
-paternal grandparents were Francisco GARCIA and Maria Andrea ALCALA,
-maternal grandparents were Nestor HERNANDES and Teofila AGUILAR.
- - -And that's all  I know.  I have no indication that any of Dad's family comes from Jalisco (which is where my mother's Sandoval family comes from), but ironically, I have found the last name ALCALA in Jalisco records but  not a trace in Tamaulipas.  I have not brought it up in the NR site because I have no indication  Dad's ALCALA family comes from Jalisco,  but  who knows?  If any of these names sound familiar, please let me know, any leads will be much appreciated.

Mil Gracias

Fw: Brothers, friend take shot at making premium tequila

Comrades,
here's an article on two brothers from Jalisco,
thought it might be interesting and a possible family connection

Tequila is one of my interests as well. Thanks for the article. There is also a tequila, Tequila Partida, which was started by Sofia Partida from LA and an investor from San Francisco. Sofia has family ties to Amatitan, Jalisco. If you are intersted go to: www.partidatequila.com. She has a similar story to the two brothers you mention in your email.

Enjoy,
