Psychic Roots

On this Day of the Dead, I sent to the editor of the Rootsweb Newsletter the following:

I was very interested in the story in the last newsletter about the couple whose baby had lost a shoe at a cemetery, and when they went looking for the shoe, it was found on the grave they had been looking for and had passed by.

I had a similar experience a few years ago when my husband and I went went from our home in Washington State to meet his 94 year old aunt in El Paso TX. He had not seen this aunt or visited that town in 50 years, and was surprised that I had found her by calling all the people with her husband's name living in that town. I had hoped to find a son of hers with the same name. It turned out my husband's cousin had died years before, but his Aunt Lola was still alive (and still is at 97). We took her to the historic Concordia cemetery in El Paso TX where I knew my husband's grandfather Primitivo, Aunt Lola's brother-in-law, was buried. She knew that he had been buried in the same plot with his mother Marciana, my husband's great-grandmother and Lola's mother-in-law that she never knew since Lola had been only a small child when Marciana died.

We walked to a large old tree, where Aunt Lola remembered "Marcianita's" grave was, but she hadn't been there in years, and was having trouble finding it. It was difficult for her to walk around the gravelly, scrubby, sandy earth that most cemeteries in the Southwest have, and she was using a cane. Everyone with us had split up and were walking some distance from the tree, somewhat giving up on the notion we would find the grave, but Aunt Lola stood steadfast near the tree, saying "I know it is somewhere around here". When I turned to look at her, she was resting one elbow on the back of a tall headstone. As I approached her from the front of the headstone, my eyes were drawn to the name on a small plaque on the worn slab under that tall headstone: "Primitivo-----", and above his name, barely visible on the older slab due to the wear it had taken from sandstorms since 1912 was the name incised on the slab---- "Marciana----".

I felt chills, thinking, Marciana and her son had wanted to be found, and caused Aunt Lola to stop and rest her elbow on that stone so that we could find them.

Photos uploaded

I finally got all my ancestor's photos uploaded into my Guadalajara, Jalisco
Martin del Campo collection. These last two photos are of my grandmother's
aunt Lola, who raised her, with Rita Robles Rivera (Lola's and Alberto's
mother) and of Aunt Lola when she was much older in Los Angeles. Rita had
married Ismael Martin del Campo, but I don't have a picture of him.

Cinco de Mayo

My husband met a man recently who is from Zacatecas. My husband told him of
our plans to someday go to Jalisco to visit the areas I have been
researching. He said to be sure to visit Zacatecas during Cinco de Mayo,
because the celebrations are really great. Now, we are really excited about
going there someday! Even though I don't think I have any ancestors there,
we plan to visit Zacatecas just for the occasion!

Archivo General de la Nacion Mexico and familysearch.org

I have records/data from the Archivo General de la Nacion (Valparaiso, Sombrerete, Zacatecas, etc) which I find very helpful. My records were extracted from the Archives themselves and sent to me by a friend. Unfortunately I have had little luck in trying to find out how to locate and use the Archivo General de la Nacion; their website is not user friendly and so far useless for me. I emailed the Family History Center that I use and asked how to use the Archive General de la Nacion, and I obtained the following response, which I will use in my investigations of the Archivo General:

"I did find quite a few listings in the library cataloge. Go to www.familysearch.org . Then click on the Library tab, then the cataloge tab. Then do a keyword search for "archivo general de la nacion". Some of the entries are on microfilm. Some are not but if the ones that are not are of interest to you, you can order a copy of an index for that item for the name of interest. I can show you the form later."

Conquista del Reino de Nueva Galicia en la América Septrentrional

The Library of Congress has a lot of documents, books and manuscripts on their website. One manuscript of particular interest to this group is the title in my subject line, written by Mexican lawyer, Matias de la Mota Padilla in 1742. It is hand-written, but very legible. It contains a lot of names of people and places dating from the Conquest to 1742 in Nueva Galicia. The link to the Library of Congress is already in the links section. You can find the book by clicking on "Collections" and then browsing through the list of Selections from the National Library of Spain.

Just a little Mexican musical history lesson for you...if you are interested in this music, you can refer to my two sites, www.elsondelpueblo.com or www.gruposolymar.net. John Robles

John,

Too bad I didn't know you were in this group sooner. I have heard it advertised on the radio here in San Jose and not knowing what type of musical instruments or type of music, I never gave it a thought. The next time you are going to be in the San Jose area, please do let us know so we can come to your performance and hopefully meet up with you.

Saludos. Felipe Reyes Romo

Esperanza: African Presence in Mexico

Hi Joseph,

This group is close to my heart....and so I will share with you, as you have
shared with us whatever I can...including possible interview
opportunities....I have listened to the podcasts you have shared regarding the African
presence in Mexico --- fascinating---- goes to show you that when I was first
interested in this topic during my undergraduate studies, I should have pursued
it --- instead I became a History generalist. As you know, I have traveled to
Ghana Africa under a Fullbright, and now to be part of this continuum really
brings back to the forefront a disclosure of the many parts of who we are as
a people...much like our interest in genealogy.....In the end, I think we
all are seekers of the truth....

African Influenced Music in Mexico

----- Original Message ----
From: john robles john9ten@pacbell.net

That is a subject that interests me, as although I have never mentioned it here before, I play arpa jarocha, the folk harp from Veracruz, Mexico, and the music from that region, the son jarocho, has a heavy African influence in the rhythm, certainly, but most pointedly in the singing style. Traditional son jarocho
John, I have always had a love for music from Veracruz y los sones Jarochos such as el pajaro cu' and many other pieces named after colorful animals. I also love Carribean music. It must be my African descendants who are calling. I just recently found a document of someone who may be my African ancestress going back 8 generations, it says mulata libre and she was born in 1797. I still don't know for sure that she is my ancestress until I order additional documents.

Just a little Mexican musical history lesson for you...if you are interested in this music, you can refer to my two sites, www.elsondelpueblo.com or www.gruposolymar.net.
John I went onto your two sites and I will definitely place an order for one of your CD's, thanks for sharing that with us.

The first site has musical samples if you click on the icon of the CD.
I don't mean for this to be a commercial for my music, but I want to share some of the living African influence in Mexican musica with you all. Hope I am not crossing the line here!!
John, definitely not crossing the line here, thanks for sharing with us about your talents and about the music of Veracruz which I have always loved.

"Re-thinking Conquest: Spanish and Native Experiences in the New World"

I saw this announcement concerning a lecture to be held next week at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. Is anyone familiar with the speaker, Felipe Fernandez-Armesto?

News from the Library of Congress

Felipe Fernández-Armesto To Present Annual Kislak Lecture Nov. 9

British historian Felipe Fernández-Armesto will deliver the second annual Jay I. Kislak lecture titled “Re-Thinking Conquest: Spanish and Native Experiences in the Americas” at the Library of Congress at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9, in the Coolidge Auditorium of the Thomas Jefferson Building, 10 First St. S.E., Washington, D.C.
Sponsored by the Library’s John W. Kluge Center, the lecture is free and open to the public. No tickets or reservations are required.
In his lecture, Fernández-Armesto will argue that Spanish empire building in the Americas was, by most standards, more dynamic and big-scale than any comparable event at the time. His recent research, especially in native-language archives and neglected Spanish sources, will open new perspectives and make it possible to understand for the first time what the conquests really meant to those who experienced them.
Fernández-Armesto is the author of “Pathfinders: A Global History of Exploration” (Norton), which will be released Nov. 27. He is also the Prince of Asturias Professor at Tufts University and a professorial fellow of Queen Mary and visiting professor of global environmental history at the University of London.
In addition to “Pathfinders,” Fernández-Armesto has written many books, including “The World: A History, Volume II, Since 1300” (2006); “Ideas That Changed the World” (2003); “The Americas” (2003); “Food: A History” (2001); “Civilizations” (2000); and “Millennium: A History of our Last Thousand Years” (1995).

You can read the announcement in its entirety at the following site:

New in the group

I would like to introduce myself. My name is Alejandro Gomez, I am 22 years old, from Monterrey, Mexico. I have been researching my ancestors for several years, and some of my lines came from the states of Aguascalientes, Zacatecas and Jalisco.
Some of the surnames that I am researching are Munoz de la Barba, Milleros, De Torres, Cordero, Becerra, Diosdado, Luna, Gomez and Jimenez.
I really enjoy doing genealogy and I hope to be able to help as much as I can and sharing our information and findings.
And, of course, if someone needs any help with some ancestor from Northern Mexico please let me know, I will be more than happy to help.

Best Regards,

Alejandro.

Foods from Africa, Burt Wolf Travels

Yesterday while mostly listening to the TV on my local PBS, Burt Wolf had a segment on the food and people migrations from Africa and the impact they had on the Americas. I found it extremely interesting considering that some of the foods mentioned such as yams, peanuts, bananas and watermelon are still some of the main staples of both the Mexican and American diets.

We often don't give our African ancestors much credit for our history and here's a good example of what aside from slavery Africa has contributed to our culture and history.
