Zacatecas was never part of Jalisco. It was a seperate intendency since before Mexican independence and in fact, I believe it was actually never even part of Nueva Galicia, but rather was settled before Nunez de Guzman conquered what later became Nueva Galicia (which comprised the modern states of Jalisco, Nayarit and Sinaloa). Nochistlan, the oldest Spanish settlement in Zacatecas dates from 1531. http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/mexico.html http://www.e-local.gob.mx/work/templates/enciclo/zacatecas/hist.htm --- In ranchos@yahoogroups.com, "Natalie"wrote: > or an historical geography lesson (not sure which), and I'm not sure > where/how to find the information. Hello All,
I just added two new localities to my search in Zacatecas: Ojo
Caliente and Trancoso. The starting surnames are Alvarado and Colunga.
Anyone?

"El Archivo Franciscano" is found at the National Library in México.
Part of it is also found at the Public Library of Guadalajara.
Here's an interesting document (In Spanish):

In "Colecciones Mexicanas" from the "Universidad Nacional Autónoma de

or an historical geography lesson (not sure which), and I'm not sure where/how to find the information. My question is - were Jalisco and Zacatecas established at the same time as political jurisdictions, or was one a part of the other first? If so, when were they separated? Any clues or sources greatly appreciated. Mil gracias. Natalie in VA

Prior to the foundation of the parrish of San Luis Obispo in Colotlan c. 1720, the Franciscans ran a convent (monestary) in the city, where marriages and baptisms were performed. Apparently, there are archives of the convent, as they are quoted in Esteban Valdes Salazar's book Historia de Totatiche, Tomo II... which by the way is invaluable, since it has a transcritption of the entire 1770 census as well as transcriptions of the major land transactions that occured in the area through that period, so that one can plot out the ownership of the land and superimpose the residents on each of those plots. Does anybody have any information on these Colotlan Franciscan archives?

I know on the old microfiche they list the "Serial/Sheet Number." Maybe Victor, The only thing I know about [Film Number] Field is what it says in help: "If a record contains both a batch number and a film number, then use only the batch number for your search. Film number searches are valid only when there is no batch number." And as far as [Serial/Sheet Number] I have only ever seen it to be [00]. So I don't think that is any help. Personally, I have never used either field in my searches. Angie P.S. I knew you were jk ... ;-) --- In ranchos@yahoogroups.com, "v.h.villarreal" |

thank you Arturo. I'm in contact with Nancy Fortna of NARA and the featured speaker, George Ryskamp. So far the doors are opening for me to attend and record the audio (possibly the video as well) of at least his presentation. I look forward to meeting you and Natalie. Are you all interested in Dinner afterward?
Jeannette will you possibly be able to attend?

is it for Durango, Durango?

Joseph:
When I went to Seville; I was looking thru the Guad. Archives and was looking at the Durango Census of 1777. I was not going to be able to be there very long so I asked for a copy [xerox] which cost an arm, anyway....I found out later that there was a copy in Mexico City also. So, I could have had a copy from the archives in Mexico. I do have a copy which I have shared with several people thru the years. The handwriting is so beautiful. It is a wonderful census. I love census records!!

No one can do follow up on Lyman's work. [Lyman, are you listening?] Pat yourself on the back [Lyman, not you Joseph!]

Hello:
Dr Inglis came to Texas on several grants to put the Nagcodoches [?] Archives in some sort of order. I met him in Austin and invited him to speak at a small meeting that the genealogical club had in Houston. He was then asked to speak at several other conference/meeting, etc. He was a professor who married a Cuenca native and lived in Seville. It was through Doug that I was able to enter the Archives in Seville and handle some of the Guadalajara Archives - his wife had worked there at one time and he knew some of the people. I went in blind....he helped me go through the paper work in order to do research there....pictures/ letters of recommendation; or at least that was what we did at the time....
Dr. Inglis said he could not make a living doing historical research so he had a business in computers at the time. He was living in Seville. I have not spoken to him in years. We had him as a guest at our home;;;;this was in the 1980's when our kids were in college. It
Alicia,
Yes there was some signifiance in that name. December 1931 was the
400 year anniversary to the Virgin de Guadalupe. So I imagine all
the children in the early part of 1932 were given that name. Funny
you should bring this up since about a week ago, I was talking with
my uncle who was born in 1931 and has the name Guadalupe.
Anyway...someone else started talking to us and he asked my uncle
were you born in the year of the Guadalupe's. My uncle laughed and
said he was born before. Later when the man left, I asked my uncle
what was that all about. He explained to me that most of the
children born in 1932 were given the name of Guadalupe in honor of
the Virgin de Guadalupe.
Hope this helps...

Angie, Thanks. I was just joking! And speaking about research tips, I don't have a clear idea what's the purpose of the fields [Serial/Sheet Number] and [Film Number] in the IGI search page. Have you found any use for those? I've tried entering data into the [Film Number] field in a similar fashion to the [Batch Number] as some recommend field but nothing happens!
