Alba puzzle

I’ve been looking at this information about Teodoro de Alba for quite a while and it remains a puzzle to me. Perhaps because we had so little information to start with, it is difficult to trust the evidence once it appears.

I too have seen similar errors so it certainly sounds plausible that you have found the baptism record for Teodoro de Alva. It may help to expand your search to include records for Teodoro's siblings, cousins and other relatives which may provide additional substantiating facts. As to "how likely" that these are your ancestors, you may want to consider taking a genealogical autosomal DNA test which will better quantify if you are on the right track. If your Teodoro is the son of Anastasio de Alva and Mariana Gonzalez then your test results should show several matches with me. Based on what I've found, Anastasio de Alva's paternal grandparents Jose Rafael de Alva and Maria Gertrudis de Cuellar are my 5th great grand parents. On Anastasio's maternal side, his mother's (Feliciana Jaime) maternal grand parents Manuel Victoriano Gonzalez de Hermosillo and Juana Maria de los Dolores Lozano are my 5th great grand parents, and both sets of Feliciana's paternal great grand parents, Florentino Jaime & Elena de Alva Bocanegra and Joaquin de Miramontes & Maria Josefa de Trillo, are also my direct ancestors.

Buena suerte!

Hi Austin,

It would be a big breakthrough for our family if we could pin down a connection for Teodoro's line in Mexico. I have my autosomal DNA on ancestry.com. Is there any way we could compare DNA results to check this out?

Hi Steve,

I have my autosomal results on FamilyTree DNA and also on GEDMatch.com. You can create an account and upload your DNA test results to GEDMatch for free. My GEDMatch kit number is F316769.

Hi Austin, I uploaded my Ancestry DNA file to GEDMatch.com and compared to yours. I'm not familiar with that site and not sure how to interpret the results. My kit number is A178224 if you want to take a look.

Hi Steve and Armando,

Steve,
Sorry to say but GEDmatch comparison of our kits did not find any shared DNA segments. The GEDmatch site may still be processing your uploaded data files so I'll try again in a couple of days.

Armando- Thanks for recommending the Genome Mate program!

Austin,
Thanks for trying. That was my reading as well, but I was hoping for another result. Guess I'll have to keep digging for my Teodoro's records. I have already uploaded my ancestryDNA file to FamilyTreeDNA and will look for matches there as well.

Steve,

Gedmatch is a great tool for finding matches with people that haven't tested with the same company as yourself and have uploaded their results from other companies to Gedmatch. I agree with Austin that you should upload your kit there. I would like to add that not everyone that has tested with FTDNA has uploaded their kit to Gedmatch and you might find other matches at FTDNA if you transfer your Ancestry results there for $39 by using the following link - https://www.familytreedna.com/autosomalTransfer?

Something you and Austin should keep in mind is that sometimes 3rd or 4th cousins don't show up as matches because they haven't inherited the same DNA and sometimes 10th cousins look like 4th cousins. What we inherit is random. In order to determine which ancestor the DNA is inherited from triangulation needs to be used with as many close relatives as possible to determine which side of the family the DNA is coming from and to prove the match isn't IBS. So if you guys have parents, aunts, uncles and so on that are willing to get a Family Finder test also that would help with triangulation.

There is a free utility called at www.genomemate.org that makes triangulation easy and you can zero in on a specific chromosome then determine who else matches on the same segment and then compare trees to see if there are any common ancestors. I highly recommend that you also use that utility.

We need more people like Austin that are knowledgeable with gedcoms and records from Jalisco, Aguascalientes, and Zacatecas involved in genetic genealogy so that we can have more success finding common ancestors for others using DNA. We have already made some strides using Y-DNA and mtDNA.

Armando,

Thanks for your always useful feedback and tips. I also have one male cousin who in the direct paternal line of Teodoro de Alba. I'll try to convince hime to do a Y-DNA test to see where that leads. I'm working my way into retirement over the next 6 months and plan to devote more time and energy to my two genealogical brick walls. Teodoro is one of them.

Hi,
20 days before the 28th may mean either the 8th or the 9th, depending on how the priest was counting the days (inclusive counting gives the 9th). However, many children born or baptized on or around November 11th could have been named Teodoro or Teodora since that day is the feast of Saint Theodore. If he married your great grandmother by the Catholic Church, the record might state if he was a widower and the name of the late wife, or the names of his parents. Also, his US death certificate may mention his birthday and parents.
Good luck with your search!

Valades or Macias Valades?

I have been studying the Macias Valades family, and have found this family which is causing some confusion.

Juan Valades (1st) m. Maria Rebollo (or Lopez Rebollo) and had at least two children:

There is a marriage record of Maria Antonia Macias Valades and Jose Antonio Zermeño in Lagos de Moreno 13 June 1768 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18564-2478-50?cc=1874591&wc=…

Juan Valades and María Rebollo also had Andrea Valades

Andrea Valades married Felipe de Trillo and some of her children used the surname Macias Valades.

The death of her daughter Maria de Trillo has her mother as Andrea Macias Valades.

The records of información matrimonial for her children after 1700 also have her has Andrea Macias Valades.

A dispensa for her daughter Felipa de Trillo states that Andrea Valades was the granddaughter of an india. That means that the mother of Juan Valades was an indian because her maternal grandmother was María López de Fuenllana the daughter of Mateo González de Ruvalcaba y López de Fuenllana and Gerónima Velásquez de Morales. It also says that Felipe de Trillo passed as Spanish even though he was the son of an español and an india.

The dispensa is at https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18377-16873-14

There are two different dispensas that prove that Maria Rebollo was the daughter of Domingo Rebollo and María López de Fuenllana.

The first was posted by Salvador Cabral Valdes

Thank you very much; this is quite helpful.

Is it reasonable to assume that a connection has not yet been found between this family and that of Blas Macias and Catalina Ramirez?

Comment

George, I haven't been able to find a connection. If a direct male descendant of Juan Valades were to get a 37 marker Y-DNA test we would be able to determine if he was a direct male descendant of Blas Macias since we already have one other person that descends from him that has had a Y-DNA 37 marker test.

Hi Linda,

Here is the link for the will for Rodrigo Rio de la Loza

http://biblio.juridicas.unam.mx/libros/1/397/21.pdf

The source for will is:

You are going to read all the names of brothers, sisters, and nephews but not Mateo's name. The will is very important nevertheless. But I still can't find a document to link Mateo to Gaspar (according to what I read on-line Gaspar was Rodrigo's brother). I saw also the same information on line (but without sources) about Gaspar as the father of Mateo, but I still don't want to link Mateo to Gaspar until I can find the source (document).

In Rodrigo's will he mentioned one Gaspar (the nephew) son of his brother Andres del Rio y Loza. But He didn't mention Gaspar "the brother" just Gaspar "the nephew". Maybe Mateo is the son of Gaspar "the nephew". I think the key will be to find Gaspar's will. I hope the information helps. If you find any other information to help with the enigma please keep me posted

Hi all--

Looking at the comments to the postings on the Nieto family, I wonder if my ancestor, Jose Manuel Francisco Nieto, who married Maria Rafaela Herrera in Pinos in 1754, descends from the same Nieto family. His parents are Joseph Nieto Corona and Maria de Mendosa y Balberde. In his marriage record, Jose Manuel Francisco is noted having been born in Pinzandaro, Michocan (I can't seem to locate records for this hacienda).

Does anyone recognize my ancestors?

Rosalinda

Comment

Hi Rosalinda,

The town of Pinzandaro is about 100 miles SW of Morelia, Michoacán. The marriage record from Pinos states that Manuel Francisco Nieto was living "en el puesto de la Noria de Arriba" and María Rafaela Herrera in the Hacienda de San Juan de los Herreras when they got married. As you probably know, several children of Antonio de Castañeda and Thomasa de Carrión were born in La Noria. We recently discovered that María de Castañeda, who married Pedro Nieto Corona in Pinos (24 Jun 1671) was the daughter of Nicolás de Castañeda y Sotomayor and Ana de Vargas Moriano, and also the sister of Antonio de Castañeda, who lived in La Noria with his wife Thomasa de Carrión. I don't have time to research this now (last day to file our income tax returns) but will do so later. I suspect that Joseph Nieto (Manuel Francisco's father) was a direct descendant of Pedro Nieto Corona and María de Castañeda. Look for the marriage of Joseph Nieto and María de Mendoza Valverde in Michoacán, where their son Manuel Francisco was born. Maybe María de Mendoza Valverde was from Michoacán.

Hi Bill,

Please take your time. Since I approximate Manuel Francisco's birth date to be about 1724 to 1734, I would venture to guess his father was born in the late 1600s or early 1700s. I feel that there is a connection, but finding it may be beyond my grasp-- I have tried to look for the records for Pinzandaro, and either they are lost, not filmed by the LDS, or some other thing. Currently Pinzandaro is under the Diocese of Apatzingán, but even their records begin in the mid 1800s. I have looked for these ancestors in the familysearch site, with no success (I have tried all of my tricks). I can only hope to search the Pinos records page by page, but I'm not sure of success there, either.

Jaime, Carolyn, Rosalinda, Daniel, et al:

While checking early records from Sierra de Pinos, I stumbled upon a record of Pedro Nieto Corona having a premarital relationship with Catalina Jiménez, a free black slave, with whom he had at least one child. Apparently, this relationship had been going on for about eight years, until the Church intervened and ordered them to stop it under penalty of excommunication and a 30 peso fine, a significant amount in those days. Catalina Jiménez was pregnant and about to give birth to a child, possibly their illegitimate son Juan Nieto. Although there is a pencil note on this record that reads "Abril 1675", the record itself indicates that the correct date is 20 April 1665. This makes sense because Pedro Nieto Corona married María de Castañeda on 24 June 1671. Pedro and María had at least eight legitimate children. Rosalinda,

There seems to be several people with the surname 'Mendoza y Valverde' here are some records that may serve as some clues. I love the new family search, it´s quicker and more organized. It also allows you to see where people with the same surname traveled and settled. This family seems to be very well from Oaxaca, since it´s a compound surname it´s probable that they are somehow related. It seems the surname started with the couple in the last record, but we must always prove it with records that are fidedigno. This is interesting, but I already have done some research on Fernández Cavallero, they originate in Burgos, Castilla they arrived some time at the turn of the XVIII century.

I hope this helps in some manner,

Bill,
Maria Castañeda, married to Pedro Nieto (Neto), is the daughter of Nicolas Castañeda and Antonia Vargas Moriano. Pedro is the son of Pedro Nieto y Josefa Corona. Their marriage information is dated June 1 1671 in Pinos, Zacatecas (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-15245-25386-84?cc=1804458&wc…) and married June 24 1671 also in Pinos. The witnesses state that they are not related. If they were via Jacinta Sotomayor (Nieto), such relationship should have at the 5th degree or higher.

Bill,
Maria Castañeda, married to Pedro Nieto (Neto), is the daughter of Nicolas Castañeda and Antonia Vargas Moriano.

Sincerely

Jaime

Daniel Mendez posted the following dispensa for Nicolas de Castaneda and Maria Gomez, who descended from siblings Jacinta de Sotomayor and Blas Nieto: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18426-82548-41?cc=1874591&wc…

This regards Maria Gomez's lines.

From my own research:
Maria Gomez was the daughter of Mathias Gomez de Sotomayor and Ysabel Ruiz de Villasenor;
Mathias Gomez was the son of Juan Gomez Nieto and Maria Teresa Martin Guerrero;
Juan Gomez was the son of Blas Nieto and ?

Here is the 15 Jun 1748 IM for Juan Antonio Gaitan and Maria Manuela Munoz:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-15263-11463-61?cc=1804458&wc…

The pretensos' grandfathers were 2nd-cousins: the bride's maternal grandfather, Nicolas Gomez de Sotomayor, was the son of Blas Gomez de las Ruelas (and Maria de Avila); Blas Gomez was the son of Juan Gomez de las Ruelas; Juan Gomez was the brother of Gonzalo Gomez de las Ruelas, who was the father of Maria Gomez de las Ruelas, who was the mother of Miguel Gaitan, grandfather of pretenso, Juan Antonio Gaitan.

I think Juan Gomez de las Ruelas and Juan Gomez Nieto are the same person, since the children and descendants of Mathias Gomez de Sotomayor would use both compound surnames, "Gomez de Sotomayor" and "Gomez de las Ruelas," linking the two. Thus, Juan Gomez and Gonzalo Gomez are sons of Blas Nieto; Mathias Gomez and Blas Gomez are brothers, and Blas would've been named for their grandfather, Blas Nieto.

Mathias Gomez was baptized 14 Mar 1658 in Guanajuato, Guanajuato, and married Ysabel de Avalos (Ruiz) 29 Dec 1683 in Panuco, Zacatecas, and by the early 1700's, they were living on Salitre in Pinos, Zacatecas.

According to the marriage records and IM's for the children of Blas Gomez and Maria de Avila, they were all born in Zacatecas, Zacatecas, and living on Salitre in Pinos in the early 1700's. Blas Gomez was deceased by 1704.

Miguel Gaitan (son of Maria Gomez de Ruelas) first appears in the 1680's in Charcas, SLP, where he would marry Antonia Arias de Bedoya (daughter of Juan Gomez de Bedoya & Leonor de Alvarado?) 25 Sep 1690; by 1704, they're living on Ballenas in Pinos, Zacatecas, later they'd be on nearby Penon Blanco. Most of their children and descendants would live on nearby Santa Rita, some of who intermarried with those of Nicolas Gomez, requiring dispensations, some which I posted on a previous thread: http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/21351

Another family living on Salitre at this time was the Sanchez de la Mejorada-Narvaez family, from San Luis Potosi, SLP (more info can be found on this thread: http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/21848): Francisco, Jose Antonio and Luis Sanchez de la Mejorada, hijos naturales of Cristobal Sanchez and Francisca Narvaez. The Gomez-Ruiz, Gomez-Avila and Sanchez-Navaez families were pretty tight, being padrinos for each other's children, and their children intermarrying; Francisco Sanchez married the widow of Mathias Gomez, Ysabel Ruiz, and adopted their children; Francisco Sanchez and Nicolas Gomez both became landowners around the same time, with Sanchez owning Guadalupe in Pinos by 1719, and Nicolas Gomez owning nearby Santa Rita.

Does anybody here have any more information on these families, or which support my theory?

Gracias y saludos,

Abram, I don't have time to translate it for you but it doesn't name the
parents. Neither does the one in Aguascalientes. However because of the
dispensa we know the mother of Victoria de Sotomayor was María and she was
a sister of Andrés and because of info found in other documents we know the
father of Victoria was Juan Montañez. You will find some posts about him at
the following thread. http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/17966?page=4

The parents of María and Andrés Sotomayor were Andrés Martín Camacho and
María de las Ruelas

Hola Armando:

Hi Abram,

I wrote my message in Spanish because for me is easier and also because I know Armando understands it. Sorry about that, hope you have understanded it.
The info. I have is that Juan Montañez was native of Salamanca, Spain and yes he was the son of Juan Montañez and Ana Vicente. Firstly he married Sebastiana Díaz Medel and secondly to María de Sotomayor. María was daughter of Andrés de Martín Camacho and María de las Ruelas, who lived in Sierra de Pinos and were previously mentioned by Armando. My question to him was if María de las Ruelas was a relative to the Philippines' governor Guido de Lavezares, because I saw that information once.

It means he was free to marry. If he had promised to marry someone else or

Microfilm of Escrituras 1691 - 1738

Today, I was looking at the microfilm of “Escrituras 1691 – 1638” Microfilm No. 0169054 at the LDS Family History Center.

If you have a digital camera, take it with you and you can take photos of
each page that's of interest to you. The great thing about photographs is
that if you have photo editing software on your computer, you can come home
and edit them for clarity and enlarge or decrease, crop and save only the
sections that are of interest to you. It's a great way of saving a record.
What I have done is take post it's with me and write the film #, and the
pertinent information about the film and put the post it next to the record
and when you photograph the record, you also photograph the post it with
the traceability information on it and you have a method for identifying
the record.

Well I don't recall seeing any "Caldera" so far. I may have seen it and past it buy as I was quickly reading by the pages and slowed down to anything interest. When Zacatecas started showing up, I really slowed down because it is interesting to read what was going on back in the late 1600's. I only got through a 1/4 of the film and have much more to go. I have to wait until the LDS is open for me to go. Since I work during the day, I can go on Wednesday nights or Saturday during the day when the LDS has the hours where I can go. I will pay attention to "Caldera" and notify you if I see anything.

I wrote down some names, dates and places in my notebook as I was reading through the microfilm of Escrituras. Just out of curiousity in the internet I looked for "1695 Zacatecas" to see what comes up so that I can compare it with what I found in the microfilm. And what came up is "Antonio Miranda De Guzman"

I looked at my notebook and saw that I wrote down:

"Antonio De Miranda Villa y Fran Rocio de esta Iglesia Cathedral Jues Providor y Vicabio Juez de Testimonios, Capellanio y Obras al Obispado de La Nueva Galicia"

That was the year 1695 and then that is when I began reading about "La Hacienda Palomas" of Juchipila.

So in the internet I found a painting of him and this is what he looked like:

http://oi57.tinypic.com/2vwy0l1.jpg

Kind of neat that I can look up in the internet the people I saw in the microfilm and see if there is a painting to see what they looked like
