Report: Hispanic Conference in Salt Lake

Hello  All,

I just got back, from the Conference, that
was held in Salt Lake City,
today at the Family History Library.

The only material, that they gave out was a
CD called “Latin American Resource” disc.  It is the same disc that
they have given out for the past two conferences.  Though, they are going to
be, redoing the disc later on this year.  For, those of you who want a copy, I
can burn a copy of the disc, and send it to you.  Also, for those who requested
a copy, of my Resource disc, there is a copy of the “Latin American”
Disc on it.  Also, they did not give out, any syllabuses.  Some classes had
handouts, but the majority didn’t.

There is a new Mexico research outline, out.  Some of
you have seen the new colored research outline.  The first, for Mexico barely
arrived, yesterday.  They weren’t releasing them, to the public today.

Another thing that I learned today.  Is
that if you have a parish marriage record, that does not state the parents, of
the

NARA Border Crossing Records

Natalie,  thank you for the information.  I guess I will just
have to wait until someone can actually see those records prior to their being
transcribed or filmed, if they can find a place that will allow them to view
them.

Emilie,
My understanding is that NARA has not yet
finished the filming of all
the border crossing records (@Mexican border).
They started with the
smaller points of entry, leaving El Paso, TX for
last. I think they
hope to have filming completed by the end of
2006.
Have you seen the following site (explains the NARA
plan)?:

NOTE:
border crossing records were created/kept 1903-1950; the first
format of
the records were based on records for ship manifests (records

Researching a place

Natalie, that is a good idea about a form to note info.  I have just
been using thin ruled binder paper and at the top (by hand) I enter the film
number, name of the church, the locale, and community where the birth or
marriage took place and what type records are included in the
film (e.g. Baptisms 1831-1842).  I then have room for 5 entries on
each page.  I have filled out thousands of pages this way through the
years.  A typical entry looks like this:

        4/12/1839 - Maria Epifania
Roman  (b.4/6/1839)
         parents:  Juan
Roman/Ma. Antonia Flores
         pat. g.p. - Xavier
Roman/Yldefonsa Tinajero
         mat. g. p. - Jose Ma.
Flores/Ma. Guadalupe Soriano
         pnos -  Francisco
Zalasar/Maria Alejandra de Orosco

I sure get tired writing "parents, pat g. p, mat g.p. and pnos" for each
entry although with abbreviations it doesn't take me that much more time, but it
does add to the writer's cramp.  I envy the Director at my FHC who has made

Emilie:

I live just a few blocks from NARA's main
building here in Washington
DC.  If you give me your father's full
information I can try and look
him up when I am down there next.  I
still have not found my
grandfather's border crossing records either and
the people at NARA
are not very helpful... the records and films are not
very easily
useable and the films are horrible quality as well.  It
really makes
me appreciate the FHC and the quality of LDS films, systems,
etc.

Hi Victor,

I remembered our email conversation awhile ago regarding Danny Villarreal's
web site.  I bet you already have this information, but I found this in the
archivo general de la nacion - it appears that this family was firmly in place
before the other Villarreales ventured out to Nuevo Leon. Did you ever
mention from what part of Mexico your Villarreal side is from?

the messages have been coming in hot and heavy as of late. I want to
remind everyone that changing your subscription to "DIGEST" is an option
and a better option than considering unsubscribing. Even if digest is to
much you can always go on "no mail" and just read the messages on the WWW.

if you don't know how to change to Digest just email me and I'll change
it for you.

ps: Digest means that instead of each individual message from the group
coming into your "INBOX" you will get one or at most two messages per
day with all the activity of that day. It will be a large message or
'digest.'

Answer to Mary Garana Allen

Hello, Carol:
I have plans to give them  photos of our immediate family and a couple of photos that would interest them, especially  of their great grandfather and an aunt.  I suppose I want to begin by setting them at ease....and calming myself because when I get excited or nervous, I forget my Spanish or it comes out badly.  I know, just take a deep breath.

Joseph Puente has reminded me about taking a tape recorder and plenty of batteries and of course I have to take my camera.  I'll share my good news with the Rancho family.  Thanks for telling me about the Kinko idea.  Yes, I am going to a small city, so we'll see.

We are such a small family; I am actively shopping for "cousins" because I believe that the little ones in our family should have a much larger family.  Plus, I am afraid they will lose touch with our heritage.  They don't have to be flag wavers, just know enough to have carino and appreciation for their roots.   Again, thanks.   Mary

Mary:

I'm also a collector of photos and have "classics" in
my colletion. You may come across some "classic
photos" they may not want to part with. Here is a
suggestion. I don't know if there are local kinko
stores, probably have to drive to the larger towns but
make a copies for yourself. I had one family from
CA., send me pictures and I scanned them in my
computer, made copies, then sent the originals back.
Also it's nice to give them a photo of yourself and
family (sharing) makes the difference. I have reached
out to so many cousins and as a matter fact just
received a photo yesterday from my prima in Los
Angeles.

Have a safe trip and I think it's wonderful you are
visiting your relatives.

Answer to Mary Garana Allen

Joseph!! I'm on a roll.  From Mexico City I am flying to Guanajuato.  I found another "cousin", 72 years old, who promises photos and a lot more information.  I can hardly stand the wait.  I am trying to get everything caught up in the office so that I can take off a week or so.  Will report when I return.   Mary

I read every e-mail emanating from Ranchos and  you  with relish!  It is almost as if I am sitting on the sidelines listening to you speak to each other.  Exciting.   One day I hope to have something to say.

You are truly an inspiration to us all. How many older relatives have passed in the short 3 years that I've been on this genealogy trail. If I had the motivation that you have I would also have been on a jet plane travelling to see these relatives before passed. Oral history is king in my opinion. Keep asking away. But I see your situation and as the elder person in your family (not to many opportunities to ask for the
