Folklore and Legend from the locals

My family is from the Huejuquilla, Jalisco, Mexico area.

From the locals, I have often heard about mysterious flares of light that just suddenly appear out of the gound at night in the country side.

What could they really be? Signs of natural gas deposts in the ground or oil?

And another folklore by the locals is the saying that there used to be a race of giants. I guess from the discovery of giant bones that wash up when there are heavy rains.

Juan Tejeda - Genealogy 1840's - Teocaltiche

I have done some further research on the website and found the following:

1. Jose Juan Tejeda Munos - born on Feb 02, 1845 - Father is Narsiso Tejeda and mother is Brigida Munos - born in Teocaltiche, Mex - Item #2985 in Films

2. Juan Tejeda Villalovos - born in 1842 on Aug 30 in Teocaltiche - father is Miguel Tejeda and mother is Jsefa Villalovos - Item #2986 in Films

This seems close as he was married in 1863, and these birthdates would make him either 21 or 18 at the time of marriage - also, the christening took place at the church - Nuestra Senora de Los Dolores

Any thoughts ?

Is there anyway that one can determine which Juan Tejeda was the father of Toribio Tejeda

Thanks, Ken Tejeda

Apaches in Zacatecas in 1854?

I was reading information about the Haciendas of the Zacatecas region. And I was reading this link about the Hacienda of San Mateo, Valparaiso, Zacatecas, Mexico:

http://www.lasviboras.com/cronica.html

It describes about several Haciendas - San Mateo of Valparaiso, Zacatecas, Mexico, Hacienda de las Viboras - does not say location of that Hacienda....but years ago one time I scrolled through microfilm of Xerez, Zacatecas the year 1620, defuntos and saw that name "Hacienda De Las Viboras" in Xerez, Zacatecas. So when I was reading the link recently and again saw the name Hacienda De Las Viboras, I already knew it's location.

Now, in the link it mentions Benito Del Hoyo and that he was killed by Apaches from the (North). So that would mean that the Apaches of the USA were fleeing the USA cavalary, crossed into Mexico and even got as far to Zacatecas?

Also, by coincidence, when I was scrolling through defunto records of Huejuquilla El Alto, from the 1800's, I saw a defunto of the Del Hoyo's. Benito Del Hoyo and his sons were killed by "Ladrones" as it was recored in the defunto records. It stuck to my mind because of how a father and his sons were killed by Ladrones.

Now when I read the link and it says that Benito Del Hoyo and his sons were killed by Apaches in 1854, I began to wonder if that is the same person that I saw in the archives years ago?

Here is the link that you can read:

http://www.lasviboras.com/cronica.html

And I made a picture of the paragraph where I found a reference to the Apaches:

Dear Group,
I've come across two new situations that have become stumbling blocks to my reseach.   I refer to them as stumbling blocks, not brick walls, because    I'm sure that our more experienced members have dealt with them, and are willing to share and educate.

1.  How do you research in Spain when you don't find IGI films to view?  I've studied the PARES site and have found posssibly useful information, but don't know how to access birth, baptismal, or other records or documents to confirm that I'm dealing with the right person.  I'm sure I need to acquire a new mindset, different from what I've done up to now with online IGI and FHC films, and I'm willing to learn.

2.  How do you access films (#1553565, batch #0760031) that can't be sent to FHC and have limited access at the FHL?

Your help would be greatly appreciated.    Thanks so much.      Alice

MADERA Family history of Huejuquilla El Alto, Jalisco, Mexico

Hi, I am a new member. I am research my family history. Madera. We are
from Huejuquilla El Alto, Jalisco, Mexico. A lot of Madera's there. But
there are a number of ranchos surrounding the pueblo. Three Rancho
Maderas:

San Jose De Maderas
Bajio de Maderas
Rincon De Maderas

These ranchos are very old. As I scrolled through rolls of films found
out that my Madera family was originally at Rincon de Maderas (Rancho de
Maderas) in the 1700's. Then in 1798, found birth of my great great
grandfather at a nearby rancho called, rancho Ximulco. Seems that my
ancestors moved from Rancho Rincon de Madera to Rancho Ximulco. And we
have been at Rancho Jimulco ever since.

But I am trying to research what part of Europe we originally came from.
I know that our pueblo, Huejuquilla El Alto, Jalisco, Mexico was founded on
March 23, 1573. The surrounding ranchos were in existence at the time.
And everyone was baptized at Parroquia de San Diego which is in the pueblo,
Huejuquilla El Alto.

My hunch is that we came from two places in Europe. Isla Madeira,
Portugal and Oviedo, Asturias, Espana.

Due to the discovery of silver in Zacatecas which is right there, since
our pueblo is on the border of northern Jalisco and Zacatecas........many
people from europe came to this area for the discovery of silver and to get
land grants (a rancho). Also note that there are a large number of indigenous Huichole that live in the area. So there was intermarrying with the Huicholes.

I found a map on the internet showing the routes that ships took from
Europe to Mexico. The spanish vessels embarked from Sevilla,
Spain.......traveled throught the islands of Portugal such as Azores,
Madeira and then through the Canary Islands.....before heading off to the
carribean islands such as Cuba and the Dominican Republic......then with
final destination to Veracruz, Mexico....

From there people traveled to Zacatecas and that is how we are in Huejuquilla El Alto there since the late 1500's.

The first Madera that was on the passenger list to the Indies (1500's) was Rodrigo
Madera (from Isla Madiera)...that landed in Dominican Republic. Don't
think I am descended from him since my family is in Mexico.

Also another clue is that our church, "Sanctuario Del Divino Preso" at
Huejuquilla El Alto, has a similar resemblance to the large church of San
Salvador in Oviedo, Asturias, Spain. I found out there are a lot of people
with last name Madera at Oviedo.

Note: When silver was discovered in Zacatecas. The silver went two
directions. Back to Spain with ships embarking from Veracruz, Mexico
and...........to China with ships embarking from Acalpulco on the Manila
Galleons that sailed through the phillipines and on to China in the trade
of mexican silver for chinese porcelain and spices.

But also with the discovery of silver in Zacatecas. There are a few
spices and herbs that grow naturally in our area of Huejuquilla El Alto,
Jalisco such as "Clavos" and other herbs that we still use in our
traditional foods. I am sure Spain collected those and used those to
trade with back in those days...

Another clue that I found is, "El Santo Nino De Atocha." By looking at the clothing you can get a clue as to what part of Europe we could have came from.

"El Santo Nino De Atocha" has Celtic Clothing, A Pilgrimage staff, water bottle and the Clam shell on the side of the chest. I investigated those items and found out that the Clam Shell is the "Saint James Clam Shell" of Santiago De Compostela, Galicia, Espana. If you look closely at this youtube video, you can see several of the items that is on "El Santo Nino De Atocha" of Fresnillo, Zacatecas:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnqpoELmDbM&feature=related

Galicia, Spain has Celtic influence which could explain the european features such as people with green eyes and blonde hair that our in are area in Mexico. That is another clue as to where some of the people in our area came from way back during precolombian times.

Saint James was an apostle of Jesus that traveled to Spain. Saint James and the apostles were suppose to have been at Capernaum, Israel

* Antonio Cortez Hernandez and Ma Manuela Alvarado Ortiz

* Jose Refugio Cortez and Alejandra Hernandez

I need help.

I believe I finally found my ancestors?! (The Villagrana's of Zacatecas)

I had found a public family tree under the name De la Garza. I found a Felix Villagrana in this tree. If anyone here thinks they might me connected to these people here, let me know! I will put what information I found here:

Francisco Villagrana: b. unknown d. unknown
Spouse: Manuela Espino: b. unknown d. unknown
Son: Nabor Villagrana

Nabor Villagrana: b. unknown d. unknown
Spouse: Maria Trinidad Rivera: b. unknown d. unknown
Son: Guillermo Villagrana

Guillermo Villagrana: b. 1837 d. 1880
Spouse: Maria De La Luz Macias: b. 26 June 1840 d. unknown
Children: 8

Felix (-)
Jose Maria (-)
Adeliado (1859-)
Nicolas (1861-)
Maria Josefa (1866-)
Leonardo (1867-1955)
Martina (1870-)
Felipa Del Refugio (1872-)

NOTES: Some of these names were passed down the family line.

On Felix Villagrana death certificate-it states his name as being "Villagrana" though in the 1920's, he signed his name as "Villagran." It also shows his birth date as being 12 July 1850. If he is the same Felix in the above family tree, his mother would have been only 10 yrs old?! And his father only 13?!

Though the name of Felix Villagrana's father is unknown on the death certificate, his mother's name was listed as: Unknown(Maria) This is just speculation, but I wonder if she was the Maria De La Luz Macias mentioned above?

The public tree acknowledges that Felix and Jose Maria Villagrana were the youngest, though their birth dates were not listed.

Again, if anyone has any more info, let me know! :)

Why we do Genealogical Research

Dear Nuestros Ranchos Members,

I just had to share this feel good story with those who would understand.

This morning after coming back from the Gym, I was making breakfast and the phone rang. My Grandson answered the phone and it was someone speaking in Spanish to him, which is not all that unusual but he immediately passed it to me.

I answer and the man's voice says in spanish, eres Alicia and I say yes, he says, me llamo Rigoberto Ruiz y hablo de Jalpa Zacatecas. My mind is trying to register who is Rigoberto Ruiz. He then says, soy Primo hermano de tu mama y hablo para darte las Gracias. Translation is I'm your mother's first cousin and I'm calling from Jalpa Zacatecas and I'm calling to thank you.

My mind is still not registering as I've never met a Rigoberto Ruiz from Jalpa Zacatecas. I begin to ask him questions such as how are we related, how did you know who I am and how to reach me etc etc. He gave a good answer!!

Two years ago I met a young man, his wife and family from Fresno Calif. Turns out he's my third cousin and he had recently gone to Jalpa to visit his family.

When I met them, they came to the house, I gave them copies of all my research of the Ruiz family. Most people don't really get it,(Genealogy) nor do they care, but he did. We talked a great deal about the Ruiz genealogy and he seemed to treasure the Genealogy charts. He shared details about the Ruiz family that I treasured

When this cousin Ruben went to Jalpa this spring, he shared the Genealogy charts with his uncle Rigoberto. His uncle said he'd been wondering for years about his ancestors, he said with his voice cracking a bit that he just had to call and thank me for doing all this research and for providing it to him and the family.
I told him that I look forward to meeting him and all my aunts, cousins and uncles some day soon.

Thought it was worth sharing, especially for those who are beginning their research and at times may feel that it's sooo time consuming and not worth the trouble. It's moments like this that makes it so worthwhile.

Look Up request - Teocaltiche Baptism 1711

Does anyone have Film # 0634015, Baptisms, Nuestra Senora de los Dolores, Teocaltiche, Jalisco?

I sent a request to the main FHC in Salt Lake for a copy of the image of the baptism for:

Bernabe Trujillo, baptized 14 JUN 1711, Batch C024197. He might be listed as Pedro Bernabe Trujillo. His parents were Jose Trujillo and Ana Lauriana (no last name).

The photoduplication service advised me they couldn't find the image on the film, saying the film is difficult to read.

The Villagrana's from Zacatecas

Hi, I had a question...Is it possible for Mexican couples such as in the 1800's, to have gotten married as early as 10 and 13 yrs old? If so, I think I've finally stumbled onto something...

As you know, I have been trying to research my great grandfather Felix Villagrana and related Villagran/Villagrana ancestors from Zacatecas, Mexico. I think I may have found the people I was looking for! So far, everything I've found with this family has matched my suspicions and clues I had from family...

Sanchez de Mendoza?

What about jose sanchez de mendoza married to maria orosco? Who are their parents? Is jose also a son of juan becerra and ana sanchez de mendoza? Or is he the son of maria hurtado de mendoza and Juan sanchez de lara? How about Juana Sanchez married to Cristobal Munoz de hermosillo. What about Maria Sanchez married to Pedro Ramirez de Mendoza?
