Editor Needed for Genealogy Publication in Spanish

I am finishing up a manuscript on the historic ethnography of southern Zacatecas and Northern Jalisco coupled with my father's genealogy. It is written in Spanish and I am looking to self-publish the work so I need someone to do line/stylistic editing. If you or anyone you know might be interested in this work, please let me know. I am willing to pay, though I do not have much of a budget...

Maria Lopez de Elizalde

Has anyone plotted out the various Maria Lopez de Elizaldes?

There must be a dozen of them. It is the single most confusing name in my family tree. Its hard to tell if a second marriage is for the same Maria Lopez de Elizalde, or for her daughter, niece, granddaughter...

A researcher in Aguascalientes sent me the following documents he says he persaonally searched in the Aguascalientes Archives. I recognize names in several trees....

PUBLISHING FAMILY HISTORY BOOK

Hola to all my Rancho's Primos
I am trying to get as much information about publishing one line of my family,
The SAAVEDRA/BALTAZAR line of Durango, Chihuahua & Texas. My question to the group is where do I start, what should I include. Any tips from our group would be welcomed! Sources, examples, sites or any personal experiences -seran bien recibidas. I read in a book that "Ir's not history until it's written" so I do want to write and print & share my work with my familia.

Bergara Lines

Just a heads up, the film jumps back and forth between dates as it appears to
be the remnants of several books... however, within each remnant, the
marriages are in order. I am about a third of the way through and have gone
through three remnants... one beginning in 1629 and ending around 1642 and
then next beginning in 1677 and ending around 1685. The third begins in 1657
and ends ???

Thanks Arturo...please don't go to any trouble! I'm going to order the films
to research, as well. Like I said, my earliest Bergara (Francisco Salvador)
appears in 1774 when he married Salvadora Godoy. They were married in
Tlaltenango de Sanchez Roman and I'm wondering if there is a connection to
the Bergara messages you're posting.....we'll see!

Looking for Lujan

Looking for Leonarda Lujan born in 1800's in Sain del Alto Zacatecas. Any Lujans out there in rancho land? She only had one son which was my grandfather Jose. She died when he was a young man and he took care of her. My grandfather said she died of an illness called "flores blancas". Sometimes I wonder what it was like being a single unwed mother in the 1800's Mexico. What I find intriguing is how Jose was accepted by the Martinez Family. His Father Eduardo Martinez was married and his wife and kids treated my grandfather very well. My grandfather Jose Lujan married as a young man dont know his first wife's name she died giving birth and so did the child. Later he married my grandmother Maria Mendoza Castaneda. My grandmother Maria rememberd attending his wedding to his first wife when she was a young girl. She said she and her friends giggled as the young couple kissed. Leonarda Lujan had other sisters I would like to know who they were. If anyone has any info or where I
can search please let me know. I usually go by Lupe. I noticed there is another Maria so if you refer to me can you put Lupe1. Thank you

Ortega and Sonora

Sorry to eavesdrop; however, I found this message of special interest. If
Sonora is mentioned, you have my undivided attention. To date I have been
able to trace my TISNADO line to the marriage of Juan Domingo Tisnado and
Ma. Magdalena Contreras in 1736 in Magdalena, Sonora. As shown by a later
padrón, he is listed as being of the presidio de Túbac. In addition, forty
years later his son, Juan José Tisnado, is listed in the muster rolls of the
presidio de Tucsón.

Regarding the surname Ortega, I have found numerous instances of
intermarriage between the TISNADO, ORTEGA and LISARRAGA. This marriages
ocurred in the area of the presidio de Altar.

Mexican Nicknames

In an earlier message, Patricia brought up the topic of nicknames, which in Spanish are known as "apodos." She asked whether such nicknames were common among Mexican people. My answer would be a resounding yes.

In fact, as a child growing up in Los Angeles, it was rare that my siblings, cousins or I would refer to each other by our real names. We all had apodos for each other. The nicknames tended to be physically descriptive, often derogatory on the surface and always clever...

Among my sibling there was "la larga", "la chaparra", "el molanche", "el prieto", "el guero", "la flaca" and "el gordo"

You see the dichotomies... I was "el prieto" and my younger brother, who is much fairer than me was "el guero". We also had other names... some of mine: "R2D2", "Tulipan", etc.

I had cousins who were "la titi" (who stuttered as a child and whose father--also a stutterer--was known as "tartajas") and "la pollo" who was pigeon-toed, etc.

middle or last names?

I was wondering if anyone can tell me if "del Refugio" or"de Jesus" etc are last names or middle names. For eg. Maria del Refugio Pena Lopez and Jose del Refugio Jimenez. I'm not sure then that I have Jose's mother's last name. The same thing with de Jesus. I have a Jose de Jesus Hernandez and a Maria de Jesus Hernandez. In this case, am I missing both their mothers' last names? or are they related?

Lavaniya

Nicknames/apodos & connection to Delgadillos

On the subject of nicknames or apodos....

Gotta chime in. In my extended family we had several Franciscos. My
uncle was Tio Pancho, my cousin was Quico or Kiko, his son by the same
name was known as El Guero.--Probably to differentiate all of them. I
have also heard Paco for Franciscos, not for Enriques--don't believe we
have any in my extended family with that name, so who knows...
We also have several Maria de la Luz. We called my aunt Tia Quica or
Kika, while my sister and several cousins with the same names were
either Luz or Lucha. Sometimes my sister is also known as La Prieta
(the dark one) too. Come to think of it, our cousins with the same name
have light hair and skin. By the way, she's not even morena, but
blanca--dark hair, pale skin. I think my parents just wanted to call
her that with affection, and to differentiate from all of the Ma. De la
Luz' in the family. My brother in law who was Anglo thought this was
funny, especially since he and my sister were of the same coloring. I
understand that my aunt was Kika or Quica because my father couldn't
pronunciate her name as a child. Also they would differentiate them as
Lucha la de Tonio(Antonio) or Lucha la de Coco (Ma del Socorro), or
Lucha la de Luz, etc., Almost sounds biblical, huh? My youngest
brother, Antonio was called El Negro. Again he would be perceived as
blanco, but the cousins with the same name were lighter skinned--one we
also called El Guero. Here we had to sometimes go back to biblical...
Guero el de Coco and Guero el de Quico......

>> Jesus = Chuy
>>
How about Pepe Chuy for the Jose de Jesus'. We used to call my cousin
that to make him mad.... Kind of sounds like Billy-Bob, huh?

> Hi Nena (Maria Elena),

It looks like your Diego Delgadillo is the son of our Diego Delgadillo.
According to my database I was showing 8 children born to Diego
Delgadillo
and Petrona de Yslas. In order of birth: Mariana 1655, Thomasa 1657 (my
ancestress), Bernardino 1659, Juan 1668, Catarina 1670, Maria 1672,
Agustin
1674, and Christobal 1677. As you can see, there is a gap between
Bernardino and Juan where Diego fits in quite nicely. I looked him up on
the
IGI and it did show that he was the son of Diego and Petrona. I have
just
added your Diego to my database.

Is this Diego your direct ancestor? If so, we are cousins once again!

Maria

Count me in on that one. So my Diego's parents were: Diego
Delgadillo & Petrona Yslas? If so, could you please elaborate what you
have on them and their ancestors. This is so exciting.

Diego Delgadillo & Fabiana Ramirez de Mendoza were also my 7th Great
Grandparents: Diego Delgadillo + Fabiana Ramirez de Mendoza>Petronila
Delgadillo + Juan de Dios Gtz de Mendoza>1: Maria-Esmeregilda
Gutierrez-de-Mendoza + Cristobal-Santiago Macias-Valadez> Maria-Cayetana
Macias + Vicente-Ferrer Gomez into my Gomez line... AND
>2: Jose-Fernando Gutierrez-de-Mendoza + Andrea-Josefa Macias-Valadez>
Maria-Micaela-de-San-Joseph Gutierrez + Jose-Bernardo Perez-de-Paredes<
AND through two of their children--one who married into my Gomez line
(again) & the other who continued the Perez line---all direct lines.
I'll elaborate with those who are interested. Just email me directly:

Please unsubscribe me from your very busy list. Thank you.

============================

I just got this message from a brand new member. the list has been
pretty busy these last few days, but just in case anyone else was
considering a move like this I would strongly recommend not
unsubscribing but first going to the "digest" version of the list which
is one email per day with all the activity that took place that day from
all the members OR even going to "no mail" and you can just login and
check the email when you have a change online.

let me know if you need help doing any of this but really all you need
to do is:

1) login

2) go to "my account"

3) go to my "my mailing lists"

4) make changes and "save"

Nicknames and Name translations

Some of the nicknames are short hand for their ancient predecessors.

Such as Pepe, which is derived from the Italian/Latin predecessor of Jose, Guiseppe.

I read that there's a town in northern Potugal where the people still speak Latin.

Some Filipinos don't even know what their Spanish names mean. I met a nurse named Corazon, who didn't know that meant heart. Her nickname was Cory.

An abbreviation that threw me was Xtobal. It took me a while to figure out it was Cristobal. The X standing for the cross, as in our own Xmas.

I suppose the name Primitivo had another meaning rather than a direct translation as primitive.

Diego Delgadillo Ancestry

This is great. It's the second time I find the same common line with two
different Ranchos members. The first time it was my Castañeda line from
Zacatecas and now the Delgadillos from Nochistlan.

It appears that Enrique Legaspi Frias and Florentino (Tino) Corbera share
common ancestry, via Diego Delgadillo married to Petrona de Isla. This is
the same line that linked with Maria Cortes, another NuestrosRanchos member.
Tino's line continues from Diego and Petrona via their daughter Mariana
Delgadilo bapt. 23 March 1655, Nochistlan, Zacatecas, Mexico, and married to
Francisco Flores de Medrano.

New Improved User Search Function

I know that a while back there was a lot of talk about being able to see a membership directory, like the old "Who's Who" database on the old Ranchos site. We made some improvements to the membership listing, which is still available at http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/profile

I have now installed a new module that allows advanced searches for members so you can basically search in specific profile fields, such as "Tepetongo" in the research location field or "Aceves" in the research surname field. The results give an abbreviated profile of each member that meets the search criteria.

The search function is available by clicking on the search button at the upper right of the main page, then clicking on the tab labeled "User" when the search page comes up. You will then have a choice of doing a simple search which will search all the profile fields or doing an advanced search which will search specific fields.

Marriage Investigations of Guadalajara: was-FHC films.

Joseph,

THe books are:

Index To The Marriage Investigations of the Diocese of Guadalajara Provinces of Coahuila * Nuevo Leon * Nuevo Santander * Texas ~ 1653 - 1750
By Raul Guerra, Jr. Nadine M. Vasquez, Baldomero Vela, Jr. COpyright 1989
Printed privately by the authjors by THE UNIVERSITY at An AMerican Print SHop Edinburg, Texas

Sold by Borderland Books via the Internet

Index To The Marriage Investigations of the Diocese of Guadalajara Provinces of Coahuila * Nuevo Leon * Nuevo Santander * Texas ~ 1751 - 1779

Some of the marriages in the above books do cover Zacatecas especially when it comes to the Zaldivars and Trevinos..

The above people belong to the Los Bexarenos group of San ANtonio, Texas

Most of the Texas genealogy groups cooperate and have a State Genealogical COnference which is located somewhere else each year. Usually trading off between Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Austin, Corpus Christi, Victoria.

We are all trying to get further in researching in Zacatecas, etc.

Hilton's first book :

Sagada Mitra de Guadalajara Antiguo Obispado de la Nueva Galacia
Expedientes de la Serie de Matrimonios Extractos Siglos XVII-XVIII by
Marua de la Luz Montejano Hilton.

There are at least 2 other volumes of Hilton's that are also sold by Borderland Books.

Hiltons books and THe first two books do overlap somewhat. I have found both sets usefully.

I was actually replying to Manuel who resides in Denver and is doing research in Canadas, Jalisco. But I'm glad you replied because I'm interested in what you said about the 2 volume book on Marriage Investigations of Guadalajara. Can you supply the exact title, author, ISBN #, Publish, and info on that Genealogy group in Texas if it's handy? You also mention the book by Hilton which I was familar with but didn't know about this other book that is why I'm interested. thanks much,

Cuca

I saw that "other" meaning you referred to Arturo, in my Collins English/Spanish dictionary, and was quite surprised.

My baby sister Pat Alderete plays a character she named Cuca in several plays she wrote. Her Cuca is a sort of pachuca Madge the beautician.

My sister gave a performance at the Getty once, and was allowed to drive all the way to the top, instead of taking the tram we peons must take:)

She'll be giving a reading in San Antonio next month. She gives readings in Texas and Nebraska every year.

My sister is no shrinking violet. One time she was giving an outdoor reading in Westwood when a real life vato loco got too wound up in her performance, and challenged her face-to-face.

To my shock, she punched him square in the nose. He lurched back, and staggered away, too embarrased and shocked to further mock a woman like my sister!

The entire feminist audience burst into applause.

Although I tried to caution my sister never to do that again. That is not the way to handle hecklers.

Sailings from Genova to Mexico

Arturo,

thanks for checking into this. What you say makes sense. I've also read
that the early Spanish sailings were not monitored very closely. That is
what gave birth to the "Sala de Contratación" as well as a series of laws.
As you say, there were illegal sailings, and I wonder if slave trafficking
was illegal? I know that Spain did not do much (or any?) of that. I have
read that the Carlo Lomellini (or Carlos Lomelín) was a slave trafficker.
That may be the reason why Rose and I are having trouble finding anything on
him.
