Hello everyone, my name is Miguel and I am originally from Aguascalientes. I am attaching my great-great-grandfather's family tree. As you will see, he has ties to several families from Los Altos, although he descends primarily from the Hernández-Gamiño and Ascensio de León families. He was born in Pénjamo, as were his parents, but all four of his grandparents were from the Arandas-Ayotlán area. Ironically, even though I am from Aguascalientes, this branch of my family

Hello Miguel,

Welcome to Nuestros Ranchos! I don't see any overlap between our family trees, but I'm sure there are others here who may share some of your ancestry.

I hope you find the answers you're looking for and enjoy being part of the group.

Thank you,

Travis

FLÓREZ-OSORIO / ERIK ANDRÉS REYNIOSO Y RENTERIA

Estimado Erik,

Beyond Internet Trees: Introducing Genuspedia.com and EK Geneascore™

Dear Community Members,

Anyone who has researched family history on platforms like FamilySearch, Ancestry, MyHeritage, or Geni understands the double-edged sword: while they provide access to digitized records, they have also spread widespread and massive errors, mislinked namesakes, and unverified user trees. Accepting automated "hints" without consulting primary records has led many to build ancestral lines on shaky ground, to say the least.

To provide a refined, reliable alternative grounded in authentic archival sources, I have established two key resources through Genuspedia.com:

1. Genuspedia.com: Exclusive Primary Source Archives

For years, I have dedicated myself to transcribing, indexing, and analyzing original 16th to 18th-century manuscripts, including notary protocols, nobility proofs, inquisitorial files, and prenuptial investigations, from the historical repositories of Spain, New Galicia, New Spain, Guatemala, the Viceroyalty of Perú, USA, Portugal and the Bishopric of

For those tracking our repository expansions, I also published the first official ingestion log:

Archival Ingestion Log I: Noble Lawsuits, Peerage Disputes & Notarial Protocols

This release incorporates cataloged abstracts covering noble lawsuits, peerage disputes, proof of lineage files, and notary protocols, essential resources for breaking through complex ancestral brick walls.

Additionally, Genuspedia now leverages specialized AI engines engineered to:

  • Cross-Check References Automatically: Interlink names, godparents, executors, and testamentary dispositions across thousands of scattered notarized and judicial records.
  • Automated Tree Building & Lineage Analysis: Map and analyze family trees grounded strictly in validated primary source evidence, eliminating false assumptions.
  • Deep Relational Analysis: Uncover hidden social networks, dowries, and kinship bonds embedded within old manuscripts that would otherwise take years of manual cross-referencing.

You can read the full breakdown of newly ingested collections directly on Genuspedia.com:

P.S. Currently I am working on the abstracts of Libros de Gobierno of Guadalajara and Nueva Galicia, and the Inventarios de Bienes of Royal Officers which will be available in September.

To keep the community updated on the continuous development of the platform, I have just deployed version 1.2 of EK Geneascore™ featuring the following enhancements:

  • 3-Generation Reliability Heatmap (7 Full Nodes): Expanded visual canvas covering the Target Ancestor, Parents, and Grandparents (paternal and maternal), allowing researchers to audit overall multi-generational lineage integrity in a single view.
  • Multi-Generational Audit Dossier (PDF Export): The reporting engine now compiles and exports an itemized, continuous audit report detailing all 7 ancestors in a unified PDF file ready for presentation or archival insertion.
  • Institutional Weights & Custom Settings: Full flexibility to customize base scoring values for each documentary category (notary protocols, nobility proofs, inquisitorial files, etc.), tailoring the audit engine to specific 16th to 19th-century archival contexts.
  • Refined "Baptism / Birth" Pillar: Standardized terminology across the interface and diagnostic output to seamlessly support both historical parish records and civil birth registrations.
  • Persistent Local Storage (localStorage): Automatic browser caching ensures that active tree evaluations, custom ancestor names, and archival citations remain safely preserved across sessions.

Are Sebastián Pérez (m. Isabel de Ávalos) & Sebastián Pérez (m. Leanor Ruvalcaba) the same person?

I’d really appreciate serious researchers’ thoughts on this Sebastián Pérez question.

Having reviewed the reconstructed family trees, baptism and marriage dates, and the various dispensas, it has become increasingly apparent to me that Sebastián Pérez, husband of Isabel de Ávalos, and Sebastián Pérez, husband of Leanor Ruvalcaba, were likely the same individual.

A father-and-son relationship has been proposed for these two men, but the chronology makes that relationship difficult to accept. Based on the estimated birth dates of Sebastián Pérez's sisters, Ana Pérez and María Burgueño, both of whom appear to have been born before 1600 (having children born as early as 1615), the Sebastián Pérez who married Isabel de Ávalos would have been too young to have been the father of all three siblings if the two Sebastiáns were separate generations.

A more plausible explanation is that there was only one Sebastián Pérez. He first married Isabel de Ávalos and, following her death, subsequently

I have long held the belief that Sebastián Pérez (born ~1600) married to Isabel de Ávalos and Sebastián Pérez married to Leonor González de Ruvalcaba are the same person. We know from various dispensas that the latter Sebastián's sisters were María Burgueño (b. ~1590) and Ana Pérez (b. ~1595) which would support the assumption that Sebastián married twice. Unfortunately, as you said, a supporting document has not yet been found to prove that they are the same person. Similarly, it seems reasonable that the parents of María Burgueño, Ana Pérez and Sebastián are Diego Pérez and Beatriz Burgueño, however, supporting documents have not yet been found to prove this.

Hello Austin,

I'm relatively new to Colonial genealogy and still make mistakes, so I appreciate your thoughts on this subject, and I agree with your take.

In my own tree, I've merged the two Sebastians, with a note explaining that, while the circumstantial evidence for identifying them as the same person is quite strong, the identification has not been definitively proven.

I have particular interest in this family. We are descended from Juana Burgeño (married to Hernando Medel), Ana Pérez (married to Bartolomé Martín), and, of course, Sebastian Pérez. We also have other Pérez ancestors from Lagos during the same period (1620-1670), some of whom may be connected to the family of Diego Pérez.

Hello Austin,

The craziest thing happened today...

I was scrolling through 1670s marriage records on FamilySearch when I stumbled upon the marriage record of my 7th great-grandmother. That discovery led to the identity of her parents—and then her grandparents: the infamous philanderer Sebastián Pérez and his wife, Josefa de Casteñeda!

It’s truly a small world (in the 1600s at least).

Thank you,

Travis

Hello,

I have been researching the Díaz de León roots for more than a decade. The only information we currently have about Juan Díaz de León and Inés Domínguez de Garfiascomes from the two wills of their son Juan, both of which were indeed located thanks to Manny. The surname González does not appear in either document, so I am unsure where this information originates. My advice would be to ignore it.

I do have a few leads that could potentially extend the lineage further back, but so far I have not found any documentary evidence to support them.

Last winter, I visited Ayamonte and tried to access the local archives but unfortunately I did not have enough time. It is a charming small town on the Guadiana River with two beautiful churches in which one of them Juan may have been baptised in the last decades of the 16th century. If you are interested in the history of Ayamonte, the city hosts an annual Jornada de Historia, during which several historians present their research on the history of the town and the surrounding region. You can find them online.

Best regards,

Tristán Díaz de León

Congratulations Alex on finding the correct lineage.   I also have Diaz de Leon in my ancestral lines. I descend from one of Andres Diaz de Leon’s brothers. I heavily studied your branch before Manny Diez Hermosillo informed me that I descend from his brother. Manny’s research into this line has been very rewarding.

The Díaz de León Family History

Compiled by

Alejandro Díaz de León Mejía

A family is not measured solely by the years it has existed, but by the character, faith and perseverance it passes from one generation to the next.

For several years I searched not simply for names and dates, but for the stories behind them. Who were these people? Where did they live? What hardships did they endure? Why did they leave Spain? How did they help build communities in New Spain (Mexico)? What legacy did they leave for future generations?

The answers were not found in a single document or family tree. They emerged gradually through historical records, church registers, land records, wills, family documents, oral history, and the patient work of comparing one source against another.

This family history record represents the beginning not the conclusion of that journey.

Its purpose is to preserve what I have learned and share it with our family. Genealogical research is constantly evolving as new records become available and existing information is verified or corrected.

I hope future generations will continue this work by adding new discoveries while preserving the integrity of those who came before us.

Research Sources

This summary is based on information gathered from a variety of sources, including:

FamilySearch.org, Ancestry.com, Nuestros Ranchos, Historical church records, Civil registration records, Wills and probate records, Historical publications, Cemetery records, Census Records, Newspaper archives, Information shared by family members, Other online Genealogy resources.

Whenever possible, I have compared information from multiple sources before including it in this summary.

Our Earliest Known Ancestors

Based on the research currently available, the earliest documented ancestor in our direct Díaz de León paternal line is Juan Díaz de León.

Estimated Birth: 1550 - 1555

Birthplace: Ayamonte, Huelva, Andalusia, Spain

Spouse: Inés Domínguez de Garfias

Ayamonte is located in the province of Huelva in Andalusia, Spain, on the border with Portugal. During the sixteenth century it was an active fishing, trading, and maritime community connected to the expanding Spanish Empire.

Based on the research currently available, Ayamonte is the earliest documented location associated with our Díaz de León family line.

Migration to New Spain (Mexico)

By the early seventeenth century, members of the Díaz de León family were living in New Spain (Mexico). One of the strongest pieces of evidence is a reported transcription of the testament of Juan Díaz de León ("El Viejo"), who also identified himself as a native of Ayamonte while living in New Spain (Mexico).

The reported transcriptions of his legal declarations from 1636 and 1655 provide valuable information about our family's early history.

According to those documents:

Juan identified himself as a native of Ayamonte.

He identified his parents as Juan Díaz de León and Inés Domínguez de Garfias.

He noted his wife was Francisca de Ortega.

He also named several of his children including our direct ancestor (Juan Díaz de León Ortega) "el Mozo". So, we have Juan his father, his name was Juan (el Viejo) and his son was also named Juan (el Mozo).

He described property accumulated during his marriage to Francisca de Ortega.

These documents provide one of the strongest known links between our family's Spanish origins and its establishment in New Spain (Mexico).

Pinos, Zacatecas

Pinos appears more frequently than any other location in the records I reviewed.

Birth records, marriage records, and family histories consistently connect multiple generations of the Díaz de León family to Pinos and the surrounding communities.

Pinos became one of the earliest communities where I could consistently follow our family's history from one generation to the next.

Several other families frequently appear alongside the Díaz de León family in this region, including the Gonzalez, Carrillo, Sotomayor, Dávila, Leos, Gil de La Mancha and Ibarra.

These repeated connections indicate that many of these families became closely linked through marriage over several generations.

Pinos represents one of the most important locations in our family's history in northern New Spain (Mexico).

La Montesa, Zacatecas

As I continued researching our family name, another location repeatedly appeared in both family records and historical accounts—La Montesa.

While Pinos helped establish our family's presence in northern New Spain, La Montesa became one of the communities most closely associated with later generations of the Díaz de León family.

Several family histories describe members of the Díaz de León family as being connected to La Montesa through ranching, agriculture, and later land ownership.

One historical account that I found states that members of the Díaz de León family, who had previously worked and leased grazing lands on the Rincón Gallardo estates, began purchasing land in La Montesa around the 1840s. This transition marked an important milestone in the family's history.

Although I continue to research the original land records, multiple sources consistently identify La Montesa as one of the most important communities associated with our family.

Family Migration

Based on my research, our family's migration can currently be summarized as follows:

Ayamonte, Huelva, Spain to New Spain (present-day Mexico) to San Luis Potosí to Pinos, Zacatecas to La Montesa / Villa García, Zacatecas to Aguascalientes to El Paso, Texas.

Questions I Hope Someone Will Answer:

Although this summary documents everything I have been able to learn so far, there are still several questions I hope someone can eventually answer.

Who were the parents of Juan Díaz de León?

When did the first member of our family leave Spain for New Spain?

Are there additional Díaz de León records in Ayamonte that have not yet been digitized?

Can the family's land purchases in La Montesa be documented through original property records?

Are there photographs, letters, family Bibles, or documents still held by relatives that should be preserved?

I hope someone reading this summary years from now will be able to answer one or more of these questions.

If they do, I hope they add those discoveries to this document so our family's history continues to grow.

My Thoughts on Family History

When I first started researching our family's history, I expected to learn a little more about my grandparents and perhaps discover another generation or two.

Instead, I found a family history that stretches back nearly five centuries.

One of the biggest lessons I learned during this project is that family history is never finished. Every year, additional records are digitized. New documents become available. Old assumptions are corrected. For that reason, I don't consider this family history record to be complete.

This family history record represents my research as it exists today. I hope future generations continue building on it, preserving our family name and sharing new discoveries with those who come after them.

Ruiz Esparza names and titles in the 1500s

When I cleaned up several generations on the Esparaza tree on Family Search to reflect the accurate relationships I was very careful to include the correct mother’s maiden name on each record which was especially important on generations with the same name, like Lope Ruiz Esparza Espinosa and Lope Ruíz de Esparza Diaz. However, the same Family Search user who had deleted the couple relationship mentioned on my previous post changed a number of the names, including some, but not all of the wives by adding long extensions like these:

Lic. Lope Ruíz De Esparza Espinoza Sr. De Esparza de Galar y Zariquiegui
Lic. Pedro Ruíz De Esparza Caparroso Sr. De Esparza de Galar y Zariquiegui - Lope Ruiz Esparza Espinosa’s son Martin Ruíz De Esparza Huici Sr. De Esparza de Galar y Zariquiegui - Lope Ruiz Esparza Espinosa’s father
María de Larrasoaña Sra. Del Palacio de Zariquiegui – One of Martin Ruíz De Esparza Huici’s wives (Not Lope’s mother)

This extended version of the name was obviously taken

Hello Travis,

I took another look at Bartolome de Mesquita.  His wife Lucia Torres doesn’t show any Silva ancestry.  In looking for Bartolome de Mesquita’s ancestry. I would first search his name with a mother surnamed Silva.   Next I would replace the Mesquita with Silva and look for a Bartolome Silva.   Mesquita may be a location from where he was from and took it as a surname replacing Silva.  Amesquita is a variation of Mesquita so also search with that spelling.

Good luck in your research,

Rick A. Ricci

Comentario

Hello Rick,

Thank you for the info and tips. I'll implement them during my searches.

I agree that the Silba/Silva is probably on Bartolomé's side. I charted 2 possible families to which he may belong. One of these families is documented with Converso affiliations.

Our Gómez line features 5% Sephardic DNA according to ancestry (tested by a very close relative) and Bartolomé Mesquita and Luisa de Torres are ancestors about 7 times over (our family is descended from them through multiple children, sometimes multiple times). So I've been concentrating on the aforementioned converso Mesquita/Amesquita group.

I hope progress can be made as this couple represents such a large part of our family history.

Thanks again.

Best,

Travis

Change in surnames according to location given

Someone asked me to explain the change in surnames in the Ochoa-Garibay pedigree.

If someone here in West Los Angeles asked where I live I would say Mar Vista. If I was in Northern California I would answer Los Angeles. if I was in another state, let's say a state clear across the country on the eastern coast, I would answer California. If I was in another country, I would answer the United States of America. This is how the surname sometimes changed from one generation to the next for Spaniards in the 15th and 16th centuries. The surnames didn't always change permanently. This was a naming pattern in these basque provinces. Some families kept their same surname even if they moved around. Some other families changed their surname often. In some families everyone changed their surname if one person changed his surname, in other families, every sibling may have a different surname.

Juan Martinez de Uncella de Mondragon de Aramayona de Alava
Ivan (Juan) son of Martin residing in the church jurisdiction of Uncella in the Villa Mondragon, from the valley Aramayona, from the Alava province, Basque Country, Spain.

Iglesia de Uncella from the Valle Aramayona, provincia Alava,
Villa de Mondragon

Later! Ybarlucea and Garibay show up as part of the surname. We have Martin Ochoa Ybarlucea becoming Martin Ochoa Garibay. The change is Ybarlucea to Garibay, from the banks of the river where the fern grows in Elorrio (Ybarlucea) to the valley where Elorrio is located (Garibay)
The banks where the fern grows in Elorrio= Ybarlucea
Valle de Elorrio= Garibay
Provincia de Guipozcoa
Basque Country

I hope this helps,
R.A. Ricci”

The reason that I wrote this originally was to explain why many of the family members had different surnames from their siblings, parents, or other relatives.

Hello Rick,

Thank you for posting this comment. Your modern parallel using Mar Vista, LA and CA is excellent. It helped.

Yes, 17th century Colonial surnames are challenging for a novice like myself but much more preferable - from a genealogical perspective - over Anglo naming practices, where these valuable clues are lost after marriage!

Connected story: using the 1669 Padron of Santa María de los Lagos, I charted out the family of Juan Días Toribio and Inés de Abrego. Most of their children assumed the surname Días, but some daughters opted to occasionally use "Abrego."

For almost a year I assumed that the "Antonia Rodrígues," who lived on the same Hacienda was a worker or servant. She is listed among the servants further down the list from the family. Later, I discovered her serving as madrina in multiple baptisms alongside her father "Juan Días Toribio" as padrino.

I learned a lesson. Never make assumptions based upon surnames in Colonial records.

This brings me to a surname question:

What is the function of "Toribio" at the end of Juan Días's name? Toribio is a personal name. I have never seen it used as a surname.

If it's not a surname; why did he place it at the end of his name? To distinguish himself from another Juan Días?

Thank you.

Comentario

Hello Travis,

Toribio, as many other names in Spanish, may be a personal name or a surname. By coincidence, I recently had a medical proceeding and the doctor's name happens to be Héctor (like myself) Toribio. My own first surname is Félix, and I have Carlos and Felipe, among others, as surnames in my family tree. Common surnames are Jaime, Lorenzo, Santiago, Miguel, Juan, etc. In Spain, at the introduction of the Civil Registration (ca 1860), most people with this kind of surname were added the preposition "de" to make clear that it was a surname.

Best regards,

Here is what I know so far:

Juan Díaz Toribio and Inés de Abrego appear to have moved from Teocaltiche to Lagos sometime between the baptisms of their daughters Inés de Abrego, on 8 June 1641 in Teocaltiche, and Micaela Díaz, on 16 October 1643 in Lagos.

According to 1748 property records, Juan Díaz Toribio purchased the Estancia de Buenavista from Pedro Arias Pardo. There is no date given for the purchase, but I suspect it may have occurred sometime around 1641–1643, coinciding with their move from Teocaltiche to Lagos. After Juan Díaz Toribio's death (abt. 17 Aug 1669), his hacienda, the Estancia de Buenavista, was divided among his four youngest children: Nicolás, Elvira, Tomás, and Ana. Unfortunately, I cannot understand all the information in the record and AI isn't much help, so I am not sure how the property passed out of their hands.

I have tried to determine the location of the Estancia de Buenavista without success. I am fairly certain, however, that it was located somewhere in Jalisco, probably in the area between Lagos and León. In some records, it is also referred to as a hacienda.

Yes, Juan Díaz Toribio is identified as Español in the records, but Inés is specifically identified as mulata in at least one record. Their ten documented children are variously classified in the records as Español, mulato, mestizo, and morisco. Given these classifications, I think it is reasonable to conclude that Inés was most likely mulata rather than mestiza.

I have heard that an early padrón of Teocaltiche exists that may shed some light on Juan and Inés, although I have not been able to locate a copy or examine it yet.

We are descended from this couple through multiple lines, so if you happen to uncover anything further or have any suggestions for additional avenues of research, I would be extremely interested to hear them.

Thank you,

Travis

Hello Travis,

The information you have found is quite interesting. It tells where they came from and the time frame. I will and try to find the Teocaltiche padrón you have mentioned and keep looking. Toribio is a rather uncommon surname and Ábrego isn't either very common, although we know that the transmision of surnames didn't follow any logic at the time and it was rather capricious.

Hello Hector,

Since our last exchange here, I looked back over my notes for Juan Díaz Toribio and noticed the padrinos for the 26 Feb 1656 baptism of his son Tomás are Nicolás Díaz and his wife Ana Nuñez.

What I've found so far on Nicolás Díaz:

Nicolás Díaz cc Ana Nuñez, children:

  1. Baptism 9 Aug 1646 Nicolás Díaz
  2. Baptism Sep 1648 Agustín Díaz

The dates of their sons' baptisms indicate Nicolás Díaz and Ana Nuñez are in the same age set as Juan Díaz Toribio and Inés de Abrego.

Maybe Juan and Nicolás are brothers? Cousins?

It's a clue for a potential new avenue of research on the family's origins.

Thank you,

Travis

Hi Dana,

I'm going through a similar dilemma and settled on a similar solution. Thanks for your perspective.

Everything is standardized today compared to the past so it's taken me a long time to get my mind around this. Even relatives who recently lived in Mexico don't understand naming customs from the colonial period.

Here's a question - not just for you - but for anyone who can answer: what about those with two completely different names?

Example: Ignacío (b c1630) son of Bartolomé de Mesquita and Luisa de Torres, was obviously named after someone, probably a relative, named Ignacío de Silva. So we have some records naming him Ignacío de Silva and others referring to him as Ignacío de Mesquita.

Thank you,

Travis

Ignacio was probably named after a grandparent or greatgrandparent that was surnamed Silva. I have even seen a surname skip even more generations.   I few years ago I wrote about surnames in a post about the Ochoa Garbay family surnames.   I will look for it and add it here.

The Essential Bookshelf for Nueva Galicia and Viceregal Research: Canonical Works & Community Recommendations

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Following the recent synthesis on researchers who have shaped colonial lineage historiography (A Compendium of Essential Genealogists and Historical Researchers of New Spain), and based on the interesting comments of our colleague Héctor Félix Aizcorbe, it is time we turn our attention to the physical and digital toolkit: the canonical reference works, published genealogical collections, and regional monographs that serve as our daily analytical baseline.

Whether investigating 16th-century lineages or 17th-century notary protocols, certain works remain indispensable.

I invite all members to reply with their most relied-upon books, using the suggested layout below.

1)Cofradia de las Benditas Animas del Purgatorio de Jalostotitlan: Instituida en 1627(167 Pages) Author: Sergio Gutierrez, a engineer by profession and an enthusiast of the history and genealogy of the Los Altos region of Jalisco, Mexico. For over a decade, he has been studying and analyzing ancient manuscripts related to these fields of research. This short publication includes the paleography of the manuscripts, as well as the records of the proceedings for founding the confraternity, the elections of stewards, the official records of visits by the ecclesiastical authorities of the Bishopric of Guadalajara, the accounting records, and the membership lists. To support the main text, the genealogical trees of the principal founding families are appended, along with a representative selection of photographs of the manuscripts, and finally, a table summarizing the administrators who led the confraternity during its first century of existence. It is an essential book in understanding the evolution of Jalostotitlan during its early formation.

INTRODUCTION TO THE VAZQUEZ DEL MERCADO FAMILY

Hello everyone,

I don't remember having seen before a post by ramon sanchez, made onTue, 2022-09-27, and a comment by Alex Mercado re the Vazquez del Mercado family, so I want to give a partial answer to their concerns.

For what I have studied, there are at least two branches of Vázquez de Mercado: One descending from Ginés, nephew of Bernardino Vázquez de Tapia, and  another one descending from doña Ana Vázquez de Mercado y Tapia (daughter of Pedro (II) Carrillo de Ávila and doña Sancha de Belmar -who, mistakenly, many people make a daughter of Bernardino Vázquez de Tapia, the conqueror), herself a great-granddaughter of Bernardino Vázquez de Tapia, married to Mateo de Río de Losa, many of whose descendants, male and female, bore the surname Vázquez de Mercado or, simply, Mercado. I know for sure some of doña Ana's descendants, and I have the feeling that some of the Vázquez de Mercado from Fresnillo are descendants of doña Ana, but I haven't been able to establish the exact connection

Pérez de Ornelas

Decided to start a new thread on this:

in an earlier post, Daniel Méndez Camino said:

"Sebastián Pérez de Ornelas, my tenth great-grandfather, married Leonor González de Ruvalcaba, daughter of Juan González de Ruvalcaba and Leonor Franco de Paredes. I don't know if this Ornelas is related to the same family that settled in Los Altos, but I've only seen a few people with the surname Pérez de Ornelas; I don't know its origin."

My ancestor, Juan Pérez, AKA Juan de Santoyo, born about (or before) 1624 (probably in Lagos), had a probable relative named Gerónima de Ornelas.

Listed in Juan's household in the 1669 Padron de Santa María de los Lagos is Gerónima de Ornelas, Viuda, living with Juan's widow, Antonia de Villegas, AKA Antonia de Mendoza, and their children (all of Juan and Antonia's known and suspected children assumed surnames of Santoyo, Pérez, Villegas and/or Mendoza).

I have no idea how Gerónima de Ornelas is related to Juan Pérez (AKA Juan de Santoyo). Sister? Mother? Daughter

Hello Hector,

I'm so appreciative of your reply and of the information you've shared.

We are descended from Juan Pérez de Santoyo and his wife, Antonia de Villegas, AKA Mendoza, through multiple lines.

In my research, I had come across the Pérez de Santoyo family of Salamanca and wondered whether there might be a connection between that family and our Juan Pérez de Santoyo. Given the information you've now provided, it seems increasingly likely that there may indeed be a connection.

I have to admit that I'm saddened that the trail appears to have gone cold and that we may never discover more about Juan. He represents such a significant part of our ancestry, and it would be wonderful to know more about where he came from and how he came to be in Lagos.

Would you possibly be able to point me toward any resources that might help me learn more about the Pérez de Santoyo family of Salamanca?

Thank you again for taking the time to share what you've found. I truly appreciate it.

Hola Travis,

Saludos,

Héctor

A Compendium of Essential Genealogists and Historical Researchers of New Spain

The study of genealogy within the historical framework of New Spain and modern Mexico represents a critical, specialized branch of Latin American historiography. Far from being a mere collection of ancestral lists, colonial Mexican genealogy serves as an essential lens through which scholars examine social stratification, economic structures, land distribution, and the transmission of political power from the early viceregal era through the nineteenth century. The research produced in this domain relies heavily on rigorous archival paleography, the critical analysis of notary protocols (protocolos notariales), ecclesiastical records, and inquisitorial proceedings, bridging family history with broader socio-economic and demographic realities.

To synthesize a truly comprehensive overview of this field, this compendium integrates a cross-model AI consensus, drawing upon comparative evaluations from Gemini, Claude, and ChatGPT to evaluate figures based on archival discoveries, published

Dear Erik,

Thank you for publishing such an extraordinary and comprehensive synthesis of the giants in our field. As a fellow researcher mapping the human terrain of Nueva Galicia, reading your master summary was deeply inspiring. I completely agree with your closing sentiment: we are indeed links in a continuous chain, standing on the shoulders of the master archivists and paleographers you so beautifully chronicled.

To answer your closing question—my journey was largely inspired by the profound oral histories passed down by my grandfather, Joe Segoviano Muñoz, who migrated from San Julián, Jalisco, to California in 1923, narrowly escaping the Cristero War. My desire to verify his stories led me to the works of Dr. Mariano González-Leal (whose Retoños volumes sit in my home office) and propelled me into the incredibly complex, interwoven genearca lineages of Los Altos.

In my professional life, I am a former Special Operations Civil Affairs Soldier, and I currently serve as an Integration Lead for U.S. Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM). In the military, my mission was to "Map the Human Terrain" in places like Iraq, Kosovo, and Ukraine. Today, I apply that exact same investigative methodology to historical records, reconstructing the complex social and economic networks of our ancestors.

On July 22, 2026, I had the honor of briefing community leaders at a local Rotary Club here in the U.S. on this exact concept. My presentation focused heavily on the founding families of Los Altos, specifically tracing my direct descents through the Muñoz de la Barba, Padilla-Dávila, Gómez de Portugal, and Álvarez lineages, all the way back to Conquistador Juan de Baeza.  I visisted Baeza, Jaen, Spain in August 2025 to do ancestral research.

Given your unparalleled expertise and your focus on 16th- and 17th-century notary protocols and European origins, I was hoping to ask you for your guidance on three highly specific "brick walls" based off July's presentation:

The Haciendas: In documenting the 18th-century landholdings of my 7th-great-grandfather, Don Salvador Manuel Muñoz de la Barba (husband to Josefa Rodríguez de Portugal), have you ever come across a Croquis (map), Testamento, or Título de Composición for the Hacienda de Tecameca or La Ciénega in Jalostotitlán?

The San Julián Founders: I am searching for any visual history of the town's founders. Have you ever encountered a historical portrait or painting of Don Lino Padilla Hurtado or Pablo Padilla Hurtado? Or possibly of any Munoz de la Barba members?

The Conquistador: Since you research the noble lineages from Europe into Nueva Galicia, are you aware of any Hoja de Servicios (military service record) or pasajeros a Indias manifest for Captain Juan de Baeza (b. 1518 in Baeza, Spain)?

I would be incredibly grateful for any insight, document exchange, or guidance you might be willing to share. Thank you again for your magnificent contribution to the community, and for reminding us all that true historical preservation is a shared, fraternal endeavor.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Ricardo Ortega y Pérez-Gallardo, autor de la monumental obra Historia Genealógica de las Familias más Antiguas de México;

Hello friends,

I hope everyone is doing well. I’m reaching out to the community because I’m working on a historical‑genealogical project that intersects both Los Altos de Jalisco research and American Revolutionary War lineage documentation.

Over the past year, I’ve been in active communication with both the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) and the SAR (Sons of the American Revolution) regarding my ancestor:

Don Salvador Manuel Muñoz de la Barba

(Vecino español of Jalostotitlán, Resident of Rancho La Ciénega, Comisario de la Acordada, Documented in 18th‑century parish and notarial records)

As many of you know, Spain supported the American Revolution through the Royal Donativo of 1780, ordered by King Carlos III, requiring heads of household, titled Spaniards, landowners, and Crown officials to contribute funds (typically dos pesos in rural Nueva Galicia).

Recently, the National SAR Lead Genealogist, Travis Franklin, reviewed my ancestor’s dossier. His official response clarified

Tengo:

Congratulations again Erik on your excellent work on Toribio Hernandez Arellano. You were also correct that Carlos Lomelin that we descend from is not the same Carlo Lomellini that is the son of Vincenzo Lomelini and Porzia.  The Carlo Lomelin, son of Vincenzo Lomellini and Porzia was proven to not be the same Carlos Lomelin married to Maria Benavides.

I hope to have a book published next year on Carlos Lomelin’s ancestry. The first part of the book is on Carlos Lomellin ancestors and descendants, so I still have many descendants to add to the book.    The second part of the book is about another person in the family tree that is a well known historical figure.  The two parts are connected which is why they will be in the same book, yet many people who don’t descend from Carlos Lomelin may only be interested in the second part.

Your last book was so filled with information that I was surprised that you didn’t include the information of the most famous historical figure in the Nuñez family tree. Since this historical figure was the first European to see the Pacific Ocean, I thought you would write about him.  But I assume that you didn’t write more about him because you already had a large amount of information in the book.

Thank you, Rick! I look forward to read your book so much. About the Nuñez family tree, one of the issues I had was the rising production costs of Amazon. I had to limit the extent of the book because it was getting pricier and the vast majority of what is earned goes to them.

However, I would feel deeply honored if you and others would continue what is written and expand it in your own works. I would be very happy if any of you found "De Nobleza Inmemorial" useful.

At the end, we are all part of the same long chain and these grains of sand are what make genealogy so exciting.

Un fuerte abrazo,

Pedro Ortiz de Anda

Reading back through the archives I found a post that states Mr Jaime Holcomb believed Pedro Ortiz de Anda (born c1560) was the natural son of Pedro de Anda Altamirano (c1535-1619).

He also believed Isabel Ortiz de Anda (cc Pedro Gómez de Portugal), Pedro Ortiz de Anda (cc Ana Ramírez) and Catalina Ortiz de Anda (cc Esteban de Pastrano) were all also natural children (born outside of marriage) of the above Pedro Ortiz de Anda.

Has there been any research on this family recently that validates or disproves Mr Holcomb's views?

Thank you.

Hello everyone,

I found the following info in Pares:

https://pares.mcu.es/ParesBusquedas20/catalogo/description/496280

Signatura:REGISTRO DE EJECUTORIAS,CAJA 404,70

Fecha Creación:1528-02-12

Nivel de Descripción:Unidad Documental Simple

Código de Referencia:ES.47186.ARCHV//REGISTRO DE EJECUTORIAS,CAJA 404,70

It tells us that Beatriz's parents were already married by 1528, and a a connection with Castañeda.

You might already have this one: dated 19 Jul 1565 in Villa de los Lagos, it’s regarding a land grant made by Hernan Martel to Pedro de Anda, his wife, Beatriz de Castañeda, and her sister, Margarita Gomez. Also mentioned is Juan de Zorita, who I believe was Beatriz de Castañeda’s brother (?): https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSDL-D9XR-T?i=135&cat=…

It starts on Image 134, with their son, Esteban de Anda y Castañeda, selling one of the sitios to Alonso de Torres, on 2 May 1605.

Though some of my lines intermarried with the Anda’s, I don’t descend from them, so I haven’t researched them much. But, Pedro de Anda (born ca 1563, so I assume he was the younger) was one of the founders of San Luis Potosi, and he and his brother, Esteban de Anda (ca 1577), appear a lot in the SLP notary archives during those first decades, so I’d suggest you direct some of your attention to those archives. FamilySearch offers that new AI search feature, so you can do filtered searches.

Good luck, and share what you find!

Here is a document dated 9 Jan 1606, in which brothers Pedro de Anda and Esteban de Anda start a company involving an estancia de ganado mayor, located in Valle de San Francisco, jurisdiction of SLP.  On the 2nd page, last paragraph, three daughters of Pedro de Anda are named: Catalina, Petrona, and Juana.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-G58X-S3TP?i=107&wc=MXB…

Daughter Catalina was married to Esteban Pastrana; on 31 Jan 1619, Esteban Pastrana, “Como marido y conjunto que soy de Catalina Ortis de Anda, hija natural de Pedro de Anda mi suegro,” granted power of attorney to Tomas del Rio: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSC6-3V7Y?i=368&cat=37…

I have Pedro de Anda and Esteban de Anda as half-brothers, Pedro being hijo natural of Pedro de Anda and a woman supposedly named Maria Ortiz, and Esteban, legitimate son of Pedro de Anda and Beatriz Gonzalez de Castañeda  - though I don’t have this sourced.

Hello Manny,

That is spectacular.

Thank you for sharing. I was also told by word-of-mouth, that Pedro Ortiz de Anda was born from his father's first marriage with María Ortiz. None of it is sourced.

Until today, I only found one document supporting the belief Pedro Ortiz de Anda was son of Pedro de Anda Altamirano (and half brother of Esteban de Anda). Your discovery is stronger evidence and makes mine redundant, but I'd like to share:

"En veintisiete de marzo [de 1619 años] bauticé a Joseph, hijo de Hernando Medel y de Juana Burgueño, su mujer. Fueron sus padrinos Esteban de Anda y su sobrina Ana Ramirez." (27 Mar 1619 Baptism of José Medel: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-KW84-K)

Padrinos above are "Esteban de Anda and his niece Ana Ramírez" .. Ana Ramírez wasn't an actual niece of Esteban de Anda (as far as I know), she was wife of his nephew, Pedro Ortiz de Anda (son of his half-brother, Pedro Ortiz de Anda).

Thank you, again, Manny!

Manny, this is a great find which corroborates the information in the post by Guillermo don Teresa Tovar regarding the 'testamento' of Esteban de Pastrana: "Tengo localizado el testamento de Esteban de Pastrana, vecino de Guadalajara, casado con Catalina Ortíz, y deja como a herederos a sus hijos: Pedro y Juana de Anda, Luisa y María Ortíz. Dice en dicho testamento, fechado en Guadalajara en 10 de junio de 1635, que tiene tratado con Esteban de Anda, tío de su mujer, el pleito por la herencia sobre del capitán Pedro de Anda, padre de su esposa, por ser hermano del dicho Esteban."

Other sons of Esteban de Pastrana and Catalina Ortiz de Anda are: Esteban, baptized on 24 June 1622, and Luis, baptized 28 June 1635, both were baptized in Guadalajara.

The other daughters, Petrona and Juana, named in the document of the 'compañía' between brothers Pedro and Esteban, are new to me. Hopefully, research on these sisters will yield some new insight on Pedro de Anda.

I have Isabel Ortiz as daughter of Pedro de Anda based on her marriage to Pedro Gómez in Lagos: En dieciocho de junio de 1613 casé y velé a Pedro Gomez, hijo de Diego Gomez y a Ysabel Hortiz, hija de Pedro de Anda, fueron sus padrinos Juan de Burgos y Leonor de Bustos. Presumably both the bride and groom were considered 'españoles' since the record was noted with an 'e' in the margen. The fact that Isabel is not named in the document that you shared, which predates her marriage record, is interesting and merits additional research for documents that confirm Isabel as the daughter of the same Pedro de Anda, brother of Esteban de Anda.

I also have have Pedro Ortiz de Anda, who married Ana Ramírez, as a son of Pedro de Anda. This is supported by the baptism record for José Medel cited by Travis. The scribe naming of Ana Ramírez as 'sobrina' of Esteban de Anda is either an error or perhaps akin to the convention used during that period in time where familial ties were extended to the husband or wife of a relative. Such as when a brother-in-law/sister-in-law would be named as 'hermano' / 'hermana'.

Using FamilySearch's new AI tool, I found a document of interest to the family. I don't understand much but it seems to be about Juan Plascencia Maldonado, father of legitimate son Miguel and natural children Baltazar Plascencia Maldonado and Maria Ulloa. Juan is the son of Hernando Plascencia Maldonado and Maria Ulloa. Witnesses include Geronimo Aramburu and Gonzalo Yanez del Monte.

Good job to everybody for putting together the first rudimentary analysis of the Plascencia family of Cuquío. Great idea Alex in creating a list of documentary evidence in the Dispensas...and Kudos to you Carlos Peredo for providing additional info on the very early Plascencia family members.

However I am confused. Very confused!!! These sets of dispensations and their data seriously call into question what we had taken for granted and assumed as truth. At first the initial dispensation had an “invisible” Tronco and set forth this summary:

Tronco . . . . . . . . . . . . . [??? & ???]
. . . . Pedro de Plasencia . . . .1 . . . . . Juan de Aceves
. . . Mariana de Plasencia . . . 2 . . . . Teresa de Aceves
. . . . Maria de Plasencia . . . . 3 . . . Teresa de Hermosillo
. . . . . . Rita Gutiérrez . . . . . .4 . . . . . Juana Hermosillo

But it did not provide a Tronco - the name(s) of the common ancestor(s). At first, this led me to assume that since the “known” mother of Juan de Aceves was (we thought) María González-Rubio, daughter of Francisco Gutiérrez-Rubio I and Anna González-Florida I. If she was the mother of Juan de Aceves, then naturally she must also be the mother of Pedro Plascencia. So then this led me to conclude María González-Rubio was married 1st to Carlos de Aceves Rascón and 2nd to Pedro de Plascencia, “el Viejo”. From this second marriage was born Pedro de Plascencia, “el Mozo”, who married Mariana de Maldonado.

But is this really so?

The new sources for the Plascencia genealogical reconstruction raise new questions and doubts, but clearly tell us that there is an Aceves connection somehow.

Alex Mercado very diligently created a list of 10 marriage dispensations which connect members of the Plascencia family tree. In the Dispensa #1, that of Juan Becerra and María de los Dolores Plascencia, I have taken the liberty of transcribing the most important and salient portions of their 1724 dispensation, which read as follows:

That’s most of it right there. And in all of this repetitious verbiage of all four statements of the common relationship, none of them mentioned the common ancestors - except for one - the oldest of the witnesses. Mateo de Plascencia, age 70 in 1724 (1724-70=1654), essentially told us this, “Luysa Abuela de dha. pret.sa y María Anna bisabuela de el pret.so eran hermanas, hijas lex.mas de Pedro de Placen.a el viejo y de María Anna de Azebez, ya difuntos”.:

[1724]
Tronco . . . Pedro de Plascencia, “el Viejo”, & Ana María de Aceves
. . . Mariana de Plascencia . . . . . . 1 . . . . . . . . Luisa de Plascencia
. . . Agustín de Plascencia . . . . . . .2 . . . . . . . Nicolás de Plascencia
. . . Melchora de los Reyes . . . . . . 3 . . . María de los Dolores Plascencia
. . . . . . Juan Becerra . . . . . . . . . . .4 . . . . . . . . . . . [la pretensa]
. . . . . . . [el pretenso] . . . . . . . .

So...Comparing this previous with the initial one already mentioned:

[1700]
Tronco . . . . . . . . . . . . . [??? & ???]
. . . . Pedro de Plasencia . . . .1 . . . . . Juan de Aceves
. . . Mariana de Plasencia . . . 2 . . . . Teresa de Aceves
. . . . Maria de Plasencia . . . . 3 . . . Teresa de Hermosillo
. . . . . . Rita Gutiérrez . . . . . .4 . . . . . Juana Hermosillo

As has already been stated by Mr. Mercado, “We know that Pedro and Mariana of Dispensa #4 are the children of Pedro de Plasencia, el Viejo and Mariana de Aceves; so the Pedro Plasencia who is brother to Juan Aceves is Pedro de Plasencia, el Viejo. Because Pedro de Plasencia, el Viejo’s wife’s name is Aceves, it is my opinion that “hermano” used in the original dispensa is to be interpreted as brother-in-law. So I believe Juan Aceves and Pedro de Plasencia, el Viejo are not siblings but Juan Aceves and Mariana Aceves are actual siblings.” So this dispensation has potentially incorrectly identified someone.

In the 1700 dispensa, were Pedro Plascencia and Juan de Aceves full brothers, half brothers, or brothers-in-law? The right answer to this question will be ground-shaking in transforming our understanding of the Plascencia, Aceves, and Gutiérrez-Rubio families.

In the 1724 dispensa, Pedro de Plascencia, “el Viejo”, & Ana María de Aceves were explicitly named as the tronco. How was Ana María de Aceves related to Carlos de Aceves and Juan de Aceves? But what if that that is not right? What if the witness got Ana María de Aceves wrong? What if this dispensation has potentially incorrectly identified someone? What if something is missing and somehow they all really fit in? What if......?

I really don’t know what to think at the moment other than somewhere in these dispensas there is a mistake or a misunderstanding about the correct family relationships. Something is missing.

Good genealogy requires methodical patience, a good eye for detail, and a a proper investigation of an entire family over several generations. This requires pain-staking work and an honest approach to first-hand text analysis, in particular Marriage Dispensations, because of the level of detail they contain hidden all throughout the several pages. Looks like these family lines are not going to reveal their centuries-long secrets easily.

Juan de Aceves (These two were HALF-BROTHERS!!!!)
Mariana de Plasencia 2. Teresa de Aceves
Maria de Plasencia 3. Teresa de Hermosillo
Rita Gutierrez 4. Juana Hermosillo

In summary, María González (María Gutiérrez) is the Tronco/Trunk of this particular lineage. She was married first to Carlos de Aceves, about 1589-1590, and had very few children…only one documented son, Juan de Aceves (married to Beatriz de Hermosillo). There is no evidence they had a daughter called Mariana (Maria Anna) de Aceves. It is unknown when Carlos de Aceves died, but probably before 1600.

After the death of her first husband, María González (María Gutiérrez) remarried…to Pedro de Plascencia, with whom she had at least six children. It is evident that María relocated from Jalostotitlán to Cuquío sometime after 1600-1605, because that is where her progeny came to reside. Evidence suggests that this was due to family connections. María’s daughter-in-law, Beatriz de Hermosillo, as sister of Juan González de Hermosillo II (both children of Juan González de Hermosillo I), who owned vast tracts of land in the jurisdictions of Jalostotitlán and Juanacatlán. The parish of Cuquío was carved out of lands from both encomiendas. Through purchase, matrimonial alliances, and inheritance, the Hermosilllo family acquired land in Cuquío, Tepatitlán, and neighboring parishes. It seems likely that after Carlos de Aceves’ death, María remarried and relocated to a new property in the parish of Cuquío…property she may have obtained from her father, one of her siblings, her deceased husband, her son, or daughter-in-law (through her dowry).

In other dispensas, we see Pedro de Plascencia (son of Pedro P. and María G.), one generation down, as the Tronco/trunk. By the way, who is this Mariana de Aceves/ Ana María de Aceves (aka Mariana de Oviedo)…there is an error here in the interpretation of the various individuals and names. Please note – María González/Gutiérrez is not the same person as Mariana de Aceves (aka Mariana de Oviedo). This confused Mariana, I believe, is María-Anna de Plascencia (Mariana Plascencia, daughter of Pedro de Plascencia, el Viejo) or Mariana de Oviedo (Mariana Maldonado), wife of Pedro de Plascencia, “el mozo”. Through their marriage was created the compound surname Plascencia Maldonado or Plascencia y Maldonado in Cuquío.

For more info check “Retoños de España en la Nueva Galicia”, por Mariano González Leal, Tovo VI, Volumen 2 (Navarrete y Argote – Ramírez de Mendoza), pgs. 668-680, Capítulo “Plascencia-Maldonado”.

¿Qué opinan de todo esto? - What do you think about this?

Estimado Primo Steven,

Rita Gutiérrez Placencia who on 18th june 1690 married Mateo Ponce

Rita Gutiérrez Placencia, born ca 1672 who on 18th june 1690 married Mateo Ponce

https://books.google.com.mx/books?id=lIVaAAAAMAAJ&q=pedro+placencia+ull…

http://books.openedition.org/cemca/1602?lang=es

I found another dispensa which may be relevant Diego Thoribio de Placencia marries Catalina de Placencia. This time Mariana's surname is Oviedo. I have no idea if this is Mariana Aceves.

I can tell you that I believe Pedro (younger) is the Pedro Placencia that Married Melchora de los Reyes Moscoso y Sandoval. I am making this connection based on:

  • Pedro's (younger) first daughter being Luisa
  • Luisa and Maria Anna Placencia were siblings (See first dispensa I posted)
  • Pedro (younger) has a sister named Maria Anna Placencia see this dispensa Felis Mercado marries Francisca Efigenia Beserra
  • Matheo de Placencia, witness, is also related to Pedro (younger) via Sagrada Mitra dispensa book 1751

I have never heard of the Trejo de Placencia family; Ill have to do some research on that. I was guessing this family is related to the Pedro de Placencia, founder of Guadalajara, simply based on how many times the name Pedro is used (I have found more Pedros related). In my experience with italian genealogy, names are repeated within the family.

Can you tell me more of the pedro de Plasencia that was the founder of Guadalajara? Pedro trejo de Plasencia who lived in Guadalajara and Zacatecas was a poet who was accused of blasphemy and sentenced to be a soldier against his will. He also went to court to fight with his wife.

The Pedro Placencia that came to Mexico in about 1525 on this list: http://garyfelix.tripod.com/index5A.htm

and here http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/20141

I havent dont very much research on him as I havent gotten that line of my tree that far. It was the interesting name repetition that made me suspicious. I believe still ~3-5 generations from that connection.

Is Trejo part of the surname?

It seems as if there are three pedro Trejo de Plasencia that come to Mexico in the 1500's. The one that is the poet descends from Álvaro Martínez de Velasco y de Beatriz de Trejo, He was born in Plasencia, Extremadura, in 1534. It seems as his father may offer clues as to my Martinez de Alarcon lines. More research is needed to find the connections to the Plasencia line but this Pedro Trejo de Plasencia has some interesting family connections to the Velasco and Martinez de Alarcon lines. I need to do much more research to solidly make the connections. Unfortunately I am in deep research on other lines so I have to put these lines aside for a time but there seems to be a potential gold mine here of information and links combining different lines.

Now if the Pedro de Placencia married to Mariana Aceves is the Pedro de Placencia from the dispensa that started this topic, how does he have a brother named Juan Aceves. Its a strange coincidence that Pedro's wife has the same name as his brother. Is it possible for hermano in this case to be brother - in - law? Or maybe a testigo with bad memory? Hopefully I can answer these questions.

Hello all

I am an Aceves through several lines and what I have in my notes is that Pedor Placencia Aceves the founder of Guadalajara married around 1560 a woman who probably used the lastname Muñóz because Pedro was the father of two men :

Antonio Aceves who married Catalina López around 1600 and they baptized one child named Josef de Aceves on march 25th 1604 in Guadalajara.

Carlos Muñóz de Aceves born near 1563 and married near 1585 to María Gonzalez Rubio

According to my notes Carlos and María were the parents of Pedro Placencia who was the owner of "Rancho Ojo de Agua"; he was born around 1585 and married around 1610 to Ana María (Aceves?)

This last couple had at least threee children :

Mariana born around 1615

Juan Placencia bapt 9-ene-1619 Guadalajara

Luisa born around 1625

Mariana was the mother of Agustín Placencia; Luisa was the mother of Nicolás de Placencia. agustín and Nicolás are mentioned in the Dispensa of Manuel Becerra y Melchora de los Reyes Placencia on 1724

Comentario

I started my findings several years ago and as I thought it to be so easy to find the sources I didn´t record what the sources were, now I tried to find them again with little succes:

The Carlos Muñóz Aceves that I have as father of Pedro Placencia and Juan de Aceves has a note on him that states that he was born in Jalostotitlán ca 1563 and died in the same place in 1678 with no source but I´m sure the source was "Retoños de España"

Then, besides the siblings I had for that Pedro Placencia :

Juan (b 1619), Luisa (b.ca 1625) and Mariana (b.ca 1615),

according to the dispensas there was a fourth one :

Pedro Placencia born circa 1612 who married Mariana de Oviedo o Maldonado
and this couple I suppose were the parents of :

Mateo de Placencia born 1646 (he states in 1733 that he is 87 years old)he married Antonia de Cuevas around 1667

Pedro Placencia Maldonado born around 1640 he married Melchora de los Reyes Sandoval around 1671

María born around 1640 married N. Covarrubias around 1660

Francisco born around 1645 married Antonia Avella Valdés around 1665

Comentario

Francisco the one that married Antonia Avella de Valdés appears sometimes as Placencia and sometimes as Placencia Maldonado as his brother Pedro does at times; for this reason I think thir mother´s name could have been Mariana de Oviedo Maldonado

Comentario

To Carlos,
Just like you, several years ago I did not always record sources as I too often mistakenly thought that these sources would be easy to find later. Besides my new research, I often have to go back and confirm information that I already had in my possession but without a source as proof. One of the issues in genealogy is that someone states something as fact, without providing a reliable source or the information that would lead to proper inductive reasoning, and people take it as ironclad. Genealogy is a science and sources must be provided or the inductive reasoning provided to show the train of thought that leads to the conjecture.

In the beginning of this year I found what I believe to be a gold mine of information in my research on the Lomellini family. Unfortunately, many researchers repeat some information that is contrary to my findings yet they don't provide sources for their statement of fact. The one source that they could provide as being reliable does not disprove what I have found, but actually reinforces my findings. Because this information is different than what is being spread around I am forced to write a short book explaining my findings where,if there had been no error, I could have just stated my findings in a page or two.

Sources and the reasoning behind conjectures are very important and should be recorded. Yes it takes up time, but in the long run it saves time.
Please inform me of any new information that you find on the Plasencia and Aseves lines
Thanks again
R.A.Ricci

I just wanted to provide a brief update. Manny Diez and I went through all of our Plascencia documents and this is where we currently stand:

Pedro de Plascencia (El Viejo), married to Mariana de (Aceves or Oviedo) had as children: Elena, Francisco, Maria (La Vieja), Pedro (El Mozo), and Mariana (La Vieja).

Elena married unknown and had Baltasar de Plascencia (who married Maria de la Cruz)

Francisco married Antonia Arias Avella de Valdes, kin can be found in Cuquio, he uses surname Plascencia Maldonado

Luisa married unknown and had Nicolas Placencia who married Manuela Cisneros

Pedro (El Mozo) married Melchora de los Reyes Moscoso y Sandoval, kin can be found in Nochistlan and Cuquio, he uses surname Plascencia Maldonado, however Ulloa is in the margin of his marriage record. Pedro (El Mozo) had Mariana (La Moza) via unknown marriage. Mariana (La Moza)'s children are Clemente Lomelin (who married Mathiana Rodriguez) and Marcos Lomelin (who married Leonor Rodriguez). Clemente and Marcos are mestizios

Mariana (La Vieja) married unknown. Her children are Maria de Plascencia (who married to Baltasar de Gutierrez) and Augustin Plascencia (who married 1. Melchora de los Reyes, probably an india 2. Andrea Torres Gomez de Mendoza)

Maria (La Vieja) married unknown. Her children are Maria de Plascencia (La Moza) (married to Francisco Agundis y Zuniga) and Matheo de Plascencia (who married Antonia Cuevas). Maria de Plascencia (La Moza) has used Covarrubias, Ulloa, and Plascencia Maldonado as her surnames.

As a clarification note, Maria (La Moza) is daughter of Maria (La Vieja). Maria who married Baltasar Gutierrez is the niece of Maria (La Vieja). Also note relationships have been amended since my previous post.

Also there is a Baltasar Plascencia in Guadalajara who married Maria Ortega. Their daughter uses the surname Plasencia y Ulloa. He may or may not be related to the 6 siblings above.

Obviously this is a work in progress and not the whole picture. If anyone has additional info on the family, please post!

PLASENCIA – ACEVES

My goal here is help wade through the several dispensas regarding the family and illustrate my logic for how I placed the family together. This was a collaborative effort between Manny Diez and me.

When you see SM # below, I am referring to a dispensa from “Sagrada mitra de Guadalajara Antiguo Obispado de la Nueva Galicia: Expedientes de la serie de matrimonios extractos siglos XVII-XVIII” by Maria de la Luz Montejano Hilton

Dispensa #1

Juan Becerra 4.

Note: The trunk is provided by Matheo de Plasencia, 70 years of age.

Dispensa #2
Marriage of Sebastian Becerra, mestizo, h.l. Manuel Becerra and Melchora de los Reyes Plasencia, to Maria Lomelin, h.l. Marcos Lomelin and Leonor Rodriguez

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18380-22991-33?cc=1874591&wc…

Trunk: Pedro de Plasencia, el Viejo
Mariana de Plasencia, la Vieja 1. Pedro de Plasencia, el Mozo
Augustin de Plasencia 2. Mariana de Plasencia, la Moza
Melchora de los Reyes Plasencia 3. Marcos Lomelin
Sebastian Becerra 4. Maria Lomelin

The trunk is provided by Matheo de Plasencia, 70 year of age, and Augustin de Plasencia, 65 years of age and grandfather of Sebastian.

Note: Dispensas #1 and #2 confirm Mariana, la Vieja, Pedro, el Mozo and Luisa are siblings, children of Pedro de Plasencia, el Viejo and Mariana Aceves. Via the marriage of Manuel Becerra and Melchora de los Reyes Plasencia we learn Melchora de los Reyes, h.l.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18575-47673-41?cc=1874591&wc…

Dispensa #3
Marriage of Clemente Lomelin, mestizo, h.l. Clemente de Lomelin and Mathiana Rodriguez, and Ana Efigenia de Alvarado, mestiza, h.l. Juan de Plasencia and Rosa Maria de Alvarado

SM 791

Pedro de Plasencia 1. Elena de Plasencia
Mariana de Plasencia 2. Baltasar de Plasencia
Clemente de Lomelin 3. Juan de Plasencia
Clemente de Lomelin 4. Ana Efigenia de Alvarado

Note: Dispensa #2 and Dispensa #3 both show Mariana de Plasencia (la Moza, in #2) with a Lomelin child and Mariana's father being Pedro. This means Dispensa #3 confirms Mariana, la Vieja, Pedro, el Mozo, Luisa, and Elena are siblings, children of Pedro de Plasencia, el Viejo and Mariana Aceves.

Dispensa #4
Marriage of Juan Antonio de los Reyes, mestizo, h.l. Sebastian de los Reyes and Francisca Gutierrez, to Antonia de Lomelin, mestiza, h.l. de Clemente de Lomelin and Mathiana Rodriguez de Mendoza

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18417-36583-34?cc=1874591&wc…

Pedro de Plasencia 1. Mariana de Plasencia
Mariana de Plasencia 2. Maria de Plasencia
Clemente de Lomelin 3. Francisca Gutierrez
Antonia de Lomelin 4. Antonio de los Reyes

Note: The marriage record of Sebastian de los Reyes and Francisca Gutierrez establishes Francisca Gutierrez h.l. Balthasar Gutierrez and Maria de Plasencia, mestizos.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18575-47667-49?cc=1874591&wc…

Dispensa #5
Marriage of Matheo Ponce, widow of Rita Gutierrez, to Juana de Hermosillo, mestiza, h.l. Francisco Jaramillo and Teresa de Hermosillo. Rita Gutierrez, h. l. Balthasar Gutierrez and Maria Plasencia

SM 2829 (what started the NR thread)

Leonor de Hermosillo 1. Beatriz de Hermosillo
Francisco Gutierrez 2. Teresa de Aceves
Balthasar Gutierrez 3. Teresa de Hermosillo
Rita Gutierrez 4. Juana Hermosillo

Pedro de Plasencia 1. Juan Aceves
Mariana de Plasencia 2. Teresa de Aceves
Maria de Plasencia 3. Teresa de Hermosillo
Rita Gutierrez 4. Juana Hermosillo

Note: This dispensa goes one generation higher than Dispensa #4. We know that Pedro and Mariana of Dispensa #4 are the children of Pedro de Plasencia, el Viejo and Mariana de Aceves; so the Pedro Plasencia who is brother to Juan Aceves is Pedro de Plasencia, el Viejo. Because Pedro de Plasencia, el Viejo’s wife’s name is Aceves, it is my opinion that “hermano” used in the original dispensa is to be interpreted as brother – in – law. So I believe Juan Aceves and Pedro de Plasencia, el Viejo are not siblings but Juan Aceves and Mariana Aceves are actual siblings.

Dispensa #6
Marriage of Felix Mercado, espanol, h.l. Domingo Mercado and Teresa de Plasencia, to Francisca Efigenia Becerra, espanola, h.l. Nicolas Becerra and Petrona Gutierrez.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18428-60438-56?cc=1874591&wc…

Pedro de Plasencia 1. Mariana de Plasencia
Teresa de Plasencia 2. Maria de Plasencia
Felix Mercado 3. Petrona Gutierrez
4. Francisca Efigenia Becerra

Note: The marriage of Nicolas Becerra to Petro Gutierrez establishes Petrona Gutierrez, h.l. Balthasar Gutierrez and Maria Plasencia. Since we know the father of Mariana de Plasencia is Pedro de Plasencia, el Viejo, Dispensa #6 establishes Pedro de Plasencia, el Mozo is the Pedro de Plasencia in Nochistlan and Cuquio who married Melchora de los Reyes Moscoso y Sandoval. Teresa de Plasencia married Domingo Vasquez de Mercado. Pedro de Plasencia, el Mozo, is the father of Mariana de Plasencia, la Moza, mother of the Lomelin’s of Dispensas #2, #3, and #4. The Mariana de Plasencia in Dispensa #6 is Mariana de Plasencia, la Vieja.

At this point it is confirmed Mariana, la Vieja, Pedro, el Mozo (married to Melchora de los Reyes Moscoso y Sandoval), Luisa, and Elena are siblings, children of Pedro de Plasencia, el Viejo and Mariana Aceves.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18575-47250-28?cc=1874591&wc…

Dispensa #7
Marriage of Joseph Miguel de Plasencia, mestizo, h.l. Valerio de Plasencia and Ana Maria Lozano, to Antonia de los Reyes, mestiza, h.l. Antonio de los Reyes and Antonia Lomelin (couple of Dispensa #4)

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18415-10262-72?cc=1874591&wc…

Augustin de Plasencia 1. Maria de Plasencia
Valerio de Plasencia 2. Francisca Gutierrez
Joseph Miguel de Plasencia 3. Antonio de los Reyes
4. Antonia de los Reyes

Francisca Gomez 1. Catarina Gomez
Andrea Torres 2. Mathiana Rodriguez
Valerio Plasencia 3. Antonia Lomelin
Joseph Miguel de Plasencia 4. Antonia de los Reyes

Note: Dispensa #6 confirms Augustin de Plasencia and Maria de Plasencia are siblings, children of Mariana, La Vieja. This is also confirmed by at least Dispensa #2 and #5. We also learn Augustin was married to Angela de Torres, in addition to the wife of the note in Dispensa #2.

Dispensa #8
Marriage of Domingo Mercado, espanol, h.l. Juan Ignacio de Mercado and Josepha Gutierrez de Hermosillo, to Eugenia Salvadora de Agundis, espanola, h.l. Nicolas de Agundis and Maria de Esquivias

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18413-83419-16?cc=1874591&wc…

Pedro de Plasencia 1. Maria de Plasencia
Teresa de Plasencia 2. Maria de Plasencia Maldonado
Juan Ignacio Mercado 3. Nicolas de Agundis
Domingo Mercado 4. Eugenia Salvadora de Agundis.

Note: Dispensa #8 confirms an additional child, Maria de Plasencia, of Pedro de Plasencia and Mariana de Aceves. The name Plasencia Maldonado is not an indication of Maria’s father’s name. Maldonado is commonly seen among many Plasencia’s in this family.

At this point it is confirmed Maria, Mariana, la Vieja, Pedro, el Mozo (married to Melchora de los Reyes Moscoso y Sandoval), Luisa, and Elena are siblings, children of Pedro de Plasencia, el Viejo and Mariana Aceves.

Dispensa #9
Marriage of Antonio de Mercado, h.l. Miguel de Mercado and Elvira Gutierrez de Hermosillo, to Augustina Sanchez de Porras, h.l. Ignacio Sanchez de Porras and Gertrudis de Plasencia y Maldonado

Pedro de Plasencia 1. Maria de Plasencia
Teresa de Plasencia 2. Matheo de Plasencia
Miguel Mercado 3. Gertrudis de Plasencia
Antonio de Mercado 4. Augustina Sanchez de Porras

Note: Dispensa #9 confirms Maria de Plasencia of Dispensa #8 had as children Matheo de Plasencia and Maria de Plasencia

Dispensa #10
Marriage of Diego Thoribio de Plasencia, espanol, h.l. Joseph de Plasencia and Maria de Agundis, to Catalina de Plasencia, espanola, h.l. Francisco de Plasencia and Juana de Herrera

Trunk: Pedro de Plasencia + Mariana de Oviedo
Maria de Plasencia 1. Francisco de Plasencia
Maria Covarrubias 2. Francisco de Plasencia
Maria de Agundis 3. Catalina de Plasencia
Diego de Thoribio de Plasencia 4.

Note: From the marriage of Joseph de Plasencia to Maria de Covarrubias (Agundis) we learn Maria de Covarrubias h.l. Francisco de Agundis and Maria de Covarrubias. It is also apparent from Dispensa #8 Maria Covarrubias married to Francisco de Agundis also uses the surname Plasencia. This also confirms that Mariana Aceves’ last name is also Oviedo. This may or may not be an error.

If you are wondering why Joseph de Plasencia wasn’t included in the dispensation it is because he wasn’t actually born a Plasencia. “[The attached document below] explains how Joseph Plasencia was raised by Pedro Plasencia, vecino of San Felipe Cuquio, and that Joseph’s surname is actually Nuñez, but he adopted Plasencia, because Pedro raised him, and not because they are related by blood. So, there’s no consanguinity through the groom’s father, it’s through his mother, Maria Agundis.” Courtesy Manny Diez.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18455-52689-9?cc=1874591&wc=…

At this point it is confirmed Francisco (married to Antonia Avella Arias Valdes), Maria, Mariana, la Vieja, Pedro, el Mozo (married to Melchora de los Reyes Moscoso y Sandoval), Luisa, and Elena are siblings, children of Pedro de Plasencia, el Viejo and Mariana Aceves.

This is the core family with the trunk being Pedro de Plasencia and Mariana de Aceves. There are many other dispensas that add to the family but no more children of the couple are confirmed to my knowledge.

Comentario

Great job Luigi and Manny !

I´ve seen before the majority of dispensas you mention and I agree basically in all your conclusions.

But I analizing the chronology of the events I think there´s a generation that you are missing.

I think the clue to realize that there must be one Pedro Placencia that marries Ana María de Aceves, and another Pedro Placencia that marries Mariana de Oviedo Maldonado is to properly analize the chronology.

It has been clearly stated that Pedro Placencia the one that married Ana María de Aceves had a brother named Juan de Aceves, who in turn married to Beatríz de Hermosillo Muñóz de la Barba around 1614.

According to much research Pedro Placencia (I) and Juan de Aceves were the children of Carlos Muñóz de Aceves born ca 1563 in Jalostotitlán who married María González Rubio around 1585.

In my notes I have that Pedro Placencia (II) was born around 1585 and married Ana María de Aceves around 1610.

This last couple were the likely parents of Elena de Placencia born around 1612; Baltazar de Placencia, born around 1611 who maried María de Ortega around 1634; and

Pedro de Placencia (III), born around 1615, who married Ana María de Oviedo Maldonado around 1640.

The dispensa that clearly helps to establish that the Pedros (II) and (III) are two different persons and Father and child is the dispensa of the marriage of Mateo Ponce and Juana de Hermosillo on 30th Aug 1700 in Tepatitlán.

In that dispensa it is mentioned that Mateo was widow of Rita Gutiérrez Placencia (whom he married 10 years before) and it becomes clear that Rita was bisnieta de Pedro Placencia ,and that Juana de Hermosillo was bisnieta of Juan de Aceves and that Pedro Placencia and Juan de Aceves were brothers.

So the line from Pedro (II) to, Rita is the following:

Pedro de Placencia (II) who married Ana María de Aceves
Pedro de Placencia (III) who married Maríana de Oviedo Maldonado
Mariana de Placencia who married Baltazar Gutiérrez de Hermosillo
Rita Gutiérrez Placencia who on 18th june 1690 married Mateo Ponce

The line for Juana de Hermosillo is :

Juan de Aceves who married Beatríz de Hermosillo
Teresa de Aceves + NN
Teresa de Hermosillo who married Francisco de Jaramillo
Juana de Hermosillo who on 30th Aug 1700 married Mateo Ponce

About the origin of Pedro Placencia (II) and his brother Juan de Aceves I have some information not verified but I will propose it anyway with the intention of reopening some lines of research.

From many texts that I´ve seen I have :

That there were two conqueros named Juan de Placencia an Pedro de Placencia Aceves (I), they were both born around 1510 in Spain and Pedro was founder of Guadalajara an regidor de Tlajomulco in 1575 , and made an "información de méritos" in 1558.

This Pedro Placencia (I)was the father of:

Antonio de Aceves, born around 1575, who married Catalina López around 1600 because this couple baptized their son Joseph in 1604 in Guadalajara; and

Carlos Muñóz de Aceves born around 1563 who married Maria González Rubio around 1585.

This last couple had the following children :

Pedro Placencia (II) born around 1585, who married Ana María de Aceves around 1610
Ana de Ulloa born around 1590, who married Pedro Uribe around 1609
Juan de Aceves born around 1591, who married in 1614 Beatríz de Hermosillo
Mariana de Ulloa Placencia born around 1595, who married Martín de Aguiar Delgadillo around 1614.

I think that the lastname Ulloa might help build this genealogy because I´m guessing that the Placencia lastname was only a reference of the land of origin of the two conquerors Juan and Pedro and that their real lastnames were Aceves and Ulloa.

Paredo

I see you have posted this:

Pedro de Placencia (II) who married Ana María de Aceves
Pedro de Placencia (III) who married Maríana de Oviedo Maldonado
Mariana de Placencia who married Baltazar Gutiérrez de Hermosillo
Rita Gutiérrez Placencia who on 18th june 1690 married Mateo Ponce

I am confused because the dispensa that started this discussion (which is the one you are referencing) teaches Rita's parents are Maria de Plasencia and Baltasar Gutierrez and Maria's mother is Mariana de Plasencia while you say Maria's father is Pedro de Plasencia (III)

Great job Luigi and Manny,

If this research is correct that Juan Aceves and Maria Ana are siblings, then Carlos Muñóz de Aceves born ca 1563 in Jalostotitlán who married María González Rubio around 1585 are the parents of Maria Ana Aceves.

Thanks ,

I am back from vacation and have been able to fully read the responses. Thank you everyone for your contributions.

First off, in my note regarding Dispensa #10 I state Mariana Aceves and Mariana Oviedo are the same person. Is everyone in agreement with that?

Paredo, I looked at your probable genealogy and I'm quite confused regarding the children of Pedro de Plasencia (III) and Mariana de Oviedo (Maldonado?).

I am in agreement with:

María de Placencia n por 1633, casó por 1650 con N Cobarrubias
Mariana n por 1638, casó por 1654 con Desconocido
Pedro de Placencia (IV) n por 1640, casó por 1665 con Melchora de los Reyes Sandoval
Francisco n por 1642, casó por 1665 con Antonia Avella Valdés
(I have further siblings Luisa and Elena)

However, Baltazar n por 1636, casó por 1660 con María de la Cruz is the son of Elena (confirmed by Dispensa #3) and Mateo n por 1646, casó por 1667 con Antonia de Cuevas is the son of Maria (confirmed by Dispensa #9)

Here is an additional source regarding Hernando Plasencia and Maria de Ulloa, paragraph 18

SFHL, you have some very interesting theories! I proposed that Pedro was brother in law to Juan Aceves due to the second source where Pedro's wife has the surname Aceves (Dispensa #1). Of course there is the second instance where her surname is Oviedo (Dispensa #10). We know there is some sort of relationship between Pedro and Juan we just dont know what kind! I think the relationship was probably brother in law or half brothers as you described but I obviously am not sure. I also have yet to find additional resources regarding Pedro el Viejo save for Dispensa's 1 and 10. I also have not studied the Aceves lines as I have only recently discovered my connection to them; however, they appear to be well researched already.

I do not understand your claim that Maria Gonzalez (alias: Maria Gutierrez & Maria Rubio) married Pedro de Plasencia, El Viejo. The only info I have gathered is he married a Mariana de Aceves or Oviedo. You also claim under this second marriage that Pedro de Plasencia, el Mozo, married Mariana de Oviedo(-Maldonado?) but I have that Pedro de Plasencia, el Mozo, married Melchora de los Reyes Moscoso y Sandoval. Are you introducing another generation where Pedro de Plasencia married to Maria Gonzalez is the father of Pedro de Plasencia, el Viejo, of Dispensa's 1 and 10? Is there any way for you to send me the Plasencia-Maldonado chapter you have?

In an attempt to alleviate some confusion here is that data that I have compiled:

Pedro de Plasencia married to Mariana de Aceves Oviedo

1. Elena Plasencia married NN

2. Francisco de Plasencia married to Antonia Arias Avella de Valdez

  • a. Pedro de Plasencia married NN
  • b. Juan de Plasencia married NN
  • c. Francisco de Plasencia married Juana de Herrera
  • d. Hernando de Plasencia married NN
  • e. Marina de Plasencia married NN
  • f. Manuel de Plasencia married Maria Garcia

3. Luisa de Plasencia married NN

  • a. Nicolas de Plasencia married Manuela Cisneros

4. Maria de Plasencia married NN

  • a. Maria de Plasencia Ulloa Covarubbias married to Francisco de Agundis y Zuniga
  • b. Matheo de Plasencia married to Antonia de Cuevas

5. Mariana de Plasencia married to NN

  • a. Agustin de Plasencia married to 1. Melchora de los Reyes 2. Andrea Torres
  • b. Maria de Plasencia married to Baltasar Gutierrez

6. Pedro de Plasencia with 1. NN

  • a. Mariana de Plasencia married NN

Pedro de Placencia married to 2. Melchora de los Reyes Moscoso y Sandoval

  • b. Alejo de Plasencia married Micaela Esquivias
  • c. Augustin de Plasencia married Magdalena de Alanis
  • d. Juan de Plasencia married Maria Vasquez de Mercado
  • e. Luisa de Plasencia (Manny Diez has been working on this line)
  • g. Teresa de Plasencia married Domingo Vasquez de Mercado (my direct paternal line)
  • h. Maria de Plasencia married to Antonio Vasquez de Mercado
  • i. Antonio de Plasencia married to Michaela Gutierrez de Hermosillo

I also have more than the 10 dispensa's I posted. The reason I presented the 10 I chose was because they build the "trunk" and the generation below that. The remainder of the dispensa's I have further confirm the trunk and second generations and build on further generations.

I found a baptism in Tepatitlan for Juana daughter of Francisco Agundis and Maria OVIEDO thus providing further support for the OVIEDO surname

9 Dec 1685

It seems early Tepatitlan baptisms are not indexed

The dispensa for Leandro de Agundis Plasencia and Gertrudis Mondragon when combined with the dispensa for Juan de Ibarra and Leonor de Siordia I believe adds a brother of Pedro de Plasencia el Viejo m. Mariana de Aceves, as well as the name of his wife (Ana Diaz de Ibarra) and her parents (Francisco de Ibarra and Catalina Diaz).

The Agundis-Mondragon dispensa does not give names, but states that Gertrudis Mondragon, the daughter of Nicolas de Siordia and Mariana de Plasencia, was a "prima en tercer grado" of the pretenso's mother. Leandro was the son of Francisco de Agundis and Maria de Plasencia Ulloa Covarrubias. I am not positive what they meant by "prima en tercer grado", but I believe it means second cousins. If that is the case (and the chronology seems to indicate that it is) the tree would look like this:

Unknown Tronco
Pedro de Plasencia el Viejo m. Mariana Aceves - 1 - Unknown Plasencia m. Ana Diaz Ibarra
Maria de Plasencia m. Unknown - 2 - Mariana de Plasencia m. Nicolas de Siordia
Maria de Plasencia etc. m. Francisco Agundis - 3 - Gertrudis Mondragon (pretensa)
Leandro de Agundis (pretenso) - 4

This tree is filled in by the tree in the Ibarra-Siordia dispensa:

Tronco: Francisco de Ibarra m. Catalina Diaz (who the testigo knew well)
Martin de Ibarra m. unknwon - 1 - Ana Diaz Ibarra
Jose de Ibarra m. Francisca de Quinones - 2 - Mariana de Plasencia m. Nicolas de Siordia
Jose Teodoro de Ibarra (pretenso) - 3 - Jose de Siordia m. Nicolasa de Zepeda
..... - 4 - Lorenza de Siordia (pretensa)

Agundis Mondragon Dispensa:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-6K93-SK?i=400&wc=12512…

Ibarra Siordia Dispensa:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-6R9D-MK?i=47&cc=1874591

What is interesting is that the Ibarra, Diaz, Siordia families all lived around Chapala. Two sons of Jose Teodoro and Lorenza (Luis Antonio and Jose Maria) are listed in the Padron of Chapala from 1766 as the owners of Hacienda San Nicholas de Ibarra:

http://chapala.mex.tl/frameset.php?url=/149858_san-nicolas-de-ibarra-17…

If anyone has any more information about these Ibarra's I would love to know more! I don't know who the parents of Francisco de Ibarra m. Catalina Diaz are and I have not been able to find anything on them through FamilySearch outside of the dispensa.

Also some interesting speculation, I believe that Catalina Diaz Barron m. Juan de Moya (the mother of my ancestor Bartolome de Moya m. Aurelia Hurtado de Mendoza Flores who had descendants in Ayo and Arandas) was the daughter of Francisco de Ibarra and Catalina Diaz. Their son Jose de Moya was the viccario of Chapala in the late 17th century and their daughter Antonia sometimes went by Ibarra. Their children were often padrinos of Spanish and Meztiso children in Chapala during the late 17th century, including the children of Jose de Ibarra and Francisca Quinones.

One last piece of speculation: it might be possible that Juana Diaz Mondragon m. Pedo Castellanos Vera y Sandoval (also my ancestor) is the daughter of Nicolas de Siordia and Mariana Plasencia, given the combination of Diaz and Mondragon (a name which her possible sister Gertudis used). The Diaz seems to have been of some importance, since there is also a Cristobal Diaz in Chapala who married first an india named Maria and secondly to Antonia de Santillan Gaytan Arriola. He had a daughter named Clara de Ibarra who married Antonio de Siordia, hijo de padres no conocidos in Chapala. Cristobal may be another grandson of Francisco de Ibarra and Catalina Diaz.

Again, I would love to know what everyone else thinks about the possibility of Pedro de Plasencia el Viejo having a brother married to Ana Diaz Ibarra and living around Chapala. Is there a different way to take the phrase "prima en tercer grado"? Also, any other information about the Ibarra's, Diaz, Moya's, Siordia's, Mondragones etc. from Chapala would be amazing!

Comentario

Richard,

You have added a great piece to the puzzle. Thank you!

Why do you propose:
Pedro de Plasencia el Viejo m. Mariana Aceves - 1 - Unknown Plasencia m. Ana Diaz Ibarra
Maria de Plasencia m. Unknown - 2 - Mariana de Plasencia m. Nicolas de Siordia
Maria de Plasencia etc. m. Francisco Agundis - 3 - Gertrudis Mondragon (pretensa)
Leandro de Agundis (pretenso) - 4

instead of:
Pedro de Plasencia el Viejo m. Mariana Aceves (Trunk)
Maria de Plasencia m. Unknown- 1 - Unknown Plasencia m. Ana Diaz Ibarra
Maria de Plasencia etc. m. Francisco Agundis - 2 - Mariana de Plasencia m. Nicolas de Siordia
Leandro de Agundis (pretenso) - 3 - Gertrudis Mondragon (pretensa)

Comentario

I am not positive of the generations, and the dispensa is not as clear as it could be (since it does not list the names of their ancestors). However, I am basing the tree on the statement that Gertrudis was a cousin of Leandro's mother in tercer grado, rather than just a cousin of the pretenso en tercer grado. I took that to mean they were talking about tercer con quarto grado, rather than tercer grado igual.

What is your take on the dispensa?

Comentario

Francisco Ibarra located the husband of Ana Ibarra as Antonio Plascencia

http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/24698

Dispensa 2560 states:

Chápala. Jal. Abril 10 de 1696 - Dispensa de tercero grado de consanguinidad.-
Leandro de Agundiz y Zúñiga. vecino de Chápala, hijo legítimo de Francisco de
Agundiz y de María de Ulloa, difuntos, vecinos de la jurisdicción de Tepaútlán;
6 fojas.

It would appear Pedro de Plascencia and Mariana de Aceves Oviedo had an additional son Antonio Plascencia married to Ana Ibarra

Comentario

Looks like I spoke too soon, the actual dispensa itself seems confusing. As I understand it, on one page Leandro and Gertrudis are related

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-6K93-K1?i=401&wc=12512…

but right side says "segundo con tercero grado de consaguinidad"

but the next page says seems to say "parentes ? de sanguinidad, en tercer grado, por rason de ser la madre del dicho contrayente, prima de la dicha gertrudis, en tercero grado"

then the next page says "Leando de Agundis y Zuniga ... con Gertrudis de Mondragin y el ympedimendo del tercero grado de consaguinidad"

I don't know spanish so I'm not too sure whats going on, so I cant be confident if Antonio Plascencia m Ana Ibarra is the brother of Pedro de Plascencia m Mariana de Aceves Oviedo or their son.

I found a dispensa including a Pedro Placencia, father of a Maria Anna. The wife of Pedro is listed as Maria Anna Azebez (Aceves). Make your own conclusions; however I found this very interesting. I am also related to the Pedro Placencia and am working on his lineage.

Dispensa for Maria de los Dolores Placencia and Juan Becerra

I believe the Matheo Placencia making the declaration, may be Pedro's grandson through daughter Maria cited in Sagrada Mitra dispensa book number 1751.

Or I could be all wrong because I dont speak/read/write any Spanish.

Great work Alex. Congratulations on this find. Part of future research should include the possibility of the Plasencia line leading to the Trejo de Plasencia line that came to Mexico

Is it possible that these Plasencia are descendants of Pedro Trejo de Plasencia who is documented as being in Guadalajara and Zacatecas? Or do they descend from another Pedro Trejo de Plasencia who also came over to Mexico but records have not shown him as being in Guadalajara or Zacatecas.

Great find Alex. The witness Mateo de Plascencia of 70 years, mentions that Pedro de Plasencia "el Viejo or Senior" was married with Maria Ana de Aceves. It's possible that this couple are the parents of Pedro de Plasencia (maybe the Jr.) and Juan de Aveces. Pedro and Juan were mentioned as being brothers in another dispensa (Matheo Ponce), see above in the trail of comments.

I’ve found another Tierras y Aguas folder that’s filled with easter eggs, this one with families from early Lagos de Moreno: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSDL-63GW-X?view=explo…

Dated 28 Sep 1674, it’s regarding a dispute between Juana Tavera (widow of Jacinto de Lariz) and Capitan Andres Ramirez de Cueva. To establish their claims, the two had to present land titles and other documentation, so we’re treated to the history of the lands in question, and to the names of all of the people who owned them since the arrival of the Spaniards. There are documents dating back to the founding of Lagos de Moreno - including a copy of the original charter given to Hernando Martel, dated 15 Jan 1563 (image 509). There are also titles that passed through cabildos in 1568 & 1569, which included Lorenzo Alvarez, Luis Lopez, Alonso Macias, Juan Becerra, Toribio Hernandez, and other early notables. Following are some relationships revealed throughout these documents - of interest to

Hello again, Manny!

I was adjusting Diego Ysquierdo's birthdate (I guessed him "about 1621" which I know now to be impossible), and decided to check Ana's household in the 1669 Padron of Lagos because I remember seeing a Sanchez noted as living with her.

After staring at the page for about a minute, I realized thanks to your new information, that almost the entire page deals with Ana's extended family group and the people living on their properties. A real eye opener!

Hello All,

It's been a while since I last posted in this forum. For those who don't know me, I run a website called valladoliddispensas.com, which is similar to guadalajaradispensas.com. Its purpose is to index all of the matrimonial dispensation records (and other types of genealogical information) from the "Antiguo Obispado de Michoacán/Casa de Morelos" microfilm archive, which is available through familysearch.org. The "Antiguo Obispado de Michoacán" covered the modern-day states of Michoacán, San Luis Potosí, Guanajuato, and Colima, as well as parts of Jalisco and Guerrero.

I wanted to share a few quick updates on the features I've added to the site:

First, I've updated all of the indexes so that you can now click on an entry's page-number link and be taken directly to that page in the corresponding FamilySearch microfilm. This should (hopefully) speed up your research.

Second, I've added a feature that organizes all of the index entries by town. If you'd like to see every entry for

The 1610 Padron de Santa Maria de los Lagos

Hello all,

Does anyone know if there is, in fact, a 1610 padrón of the Villa de Santa María de los Lagos?

I have read that Santa María de los Lagos by Alfredo Moreno González contains a simple list of inhabitants transcribed from the original 1610 padrón. Unfortunately, I have not been able to locate a copy of the book.

Does anyone know more about the 1610 padrón, the original document, or where I might find the info from Moreno González’s book?

Thank you,
Travis

Good day.

I have a copy of the 1610 manuscript from Santa María de los Lagos. I am currently co-authoring an article on it with Jorge Barba and will gladly share the article as soon as it is finished. The list of residents (67) was made on the 15th of February 1610 by request of regidor Juan de Burgos and certified by Lorenzo de Padilla Dávila, alcalde ordinario.

Best regards,

Hello Erik,

I’m excited to read your article. Thank you in advance for sharing it!

On the other hand, I’m a little afraid of all the questions—and revisions—it may bring to my family tree! Ha!

As someone relatively new to genealogy, I’m always amazed and impressed by the depth of knowledge and expertise shared by the members of this forum. I feel very fortunate to be part of this community and to have the opportunity to learn from all of you.

Thank you again,

Hello Travis,

Anytime! By the way, we are also including an older list from 1570 contained within the same manuscript, which details the "Vecinos de Arriba" in the jurisdiction of Santa María de los Lagos. Given that Santa María de los Lagos was founded in 1563, this 1570 list is among the oldest in existence and includes many ancestors such as Alonso de Alba, Santiago de Pedrosa, the Macías, Álvaro de Ornelas, etc.

Best regards,

Erik

Concepción L. Corcuera y Palomar

Concepción Corcuera y Palomar

For a very long time, the beauty and elegance of the Corcuera and Palomar ladies were almost legendary. My grandmother, a Palomar herself, representing la crème de la crème of Mexican high society, was raised in their midst alongside their uncles and cousins, and she often spoke fondly of their many stories.

This is the portrait of Concepción L. Corcuera y Palomar, painted by Philip de László in 1926. She was the first cousin of my third grandfather, José Federico Elías Miguel Palomar y Vizcarra, of the Marquises of Pánuco. Seeking copy of Diaz De Leon history as written by Guadalupe Diaz De Leon

I am hoping someone that is still active on here has a copy of the 700 page manuscript by Guadalupe Diaz De Leon on the genealogical history of the Diaz De Leon family. I joined this community after coming across a post discussing the existence of it and (I believe) Felipe Reyes said he had scanned all 700 pages and had it digitally.

I am very much interested in the history of the Hacienda de "Los Campos" since several of "our" Campos ancestors are residing there in the 1840 census. They are listed under the heading of Sn JPH.de los Campos. Does the manuscript include the whole area...we also have ancestors on Rancho de los Belas and Sn Buena Ventura.

You may have to break up the file into chunks as the web server will
not accept uploads of more than 2MB over HTTP... which is necessary if
it is to go into the secure part of the site. If you look at the
Tlaltenango Census document, you will see how the document was simply
split into several 1 to 2 MB chunks by pages.

This makes it easier to consult as well, since someone can download
portions at a time rather than having to wait for a huge file to
download every time they want to consult it. Let me know if you have
any problems with it.

Are Basilio Valdés (m. Catarina Anda Altamirano) & Basilio Valdés (m. Inés Pérez de Ruvalcaba) the same person?

I stumbled upon another case where it seems likely two individuals are in actuality the same man...

There appear to be two men named Basilio de Valdés, both born around the same time. However, the available records strongly suggest that they were the same individual.

Basilio de Valdés of Teocaltiche

Pedro de Valdés and Leonor Tejada married on 2 January 1637 in Teocaltiche. Their known children include:

Basilio de Valdés and Catarina de Anda Altamirano have one known child, Magdalena Valdés, who married José Carrillo of Teocaltiche.

Basilio de Valdés and Inés Pérez de Ruvalcaba

A Basilio de Valdés also appears later as the husband of Inés Pérez de Ruvalcaba.

Inés was born in 1661 and marri

The 1707 Información Matrimonial (IM) for Magdalena Valdés and Juan Pérez de Ornelas provides additional supporting evidence. It identifies Magdalena as the daughter of Basilio de Valdés and the deceased Catharina de Anda Altamirano, states that Basilio was a resident of Lagos, and identifies Magdalena as the widow of José Carrillo. It also states that Magdalena was originally from Teocaltiche but was then residing in Lagos.

The same IM identifies Juan Pérez de Ornelas as the son of Juan Pérez de Ornelas and Leonor de Ruvalcaba.

Are Sebastián Pérez & Lázaro Ramos half-brothers?

While doing text searches on FamilySearch, I discovered an interesting collection of documents concerning the relationship between Sebastián Pérez, Lázaro Ramos, and Juana Sánchez:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-XW95-88 (images 140–178)

The documents span the years 1709–1711 and center on the marriage of Lázaro Ramos and Juana Sánchez and the couple's relationship with Sebastián Pérez. Lázaro claimed to be the maternal half-brother of Sebastián Pérez—who was Juana's uncle by marriage as well as the father of her two children, Mateo and Magdalena.

I have read both the transcriptions and the original documents, but AI transcriptions are sloppy and the early 18th-century handwritten Spanish is challenging for me. I am struggling to fully understand the testimony.

The evidence presented in these testimonies is mostly hearsay and seems to be ambiguous.

Has anyone else studied this particular group of records? More specifically, does the testimony ultimately support the

Hi Travis,

Listed below is a translated excerpt from the book: "Genealogy of Nochistlán, Old Kingdom of New Galicia in the 17th Century according to its Parish Archives"

Chapter 80 covers several of the individuals that are involved in the documents noted in your original post.  Unfortunately this does not answer your question as to whether or not Sebastian Perez and Lazaro Ramos were half-brothers, but perhaps the below translated document may assist others in knowing the extent of this Perez family, including Sebastian Perez.   The translated and actual documents are both located in our File section, under the "Reference" area. Genealogy of Nochistlán, Old Kingdom of New Galicia in the 17th Century according to its Parish Archives

The Pérez de Frías / Pérez Burgeño / Pérez Espinoza of Santa María de los Lagos at the beginning of the 17th century

Descendants of Juan Pérez de Frías and María López

There is some doubt as to who the father of the offspring documented in this chapter is. According to the illustrious researcher Don José Alfonso Rodríguez de Carvajal y Ortiz, these are sons of Juan Pérez de Frías, son of Juan Pérez de Frías the Elder, brother by Hernando de Frías.  It is documented that Juan Pérez de Frías the Elder "In 1597 Juan Pérez de Frías received a siege of cattle (780 hectares) and a caballeria of land (43 hectares) bordering the town." p.21. Rojas, Beatriz et al., Brief History of Aguascalientes. 1994, El Colegio de México. Likewise, Juan Pérez de Frías is documented as selling land to the Orozco Agüero family in 1579 giving rise to the Ajojucar hacienda. (Guillermo Garmendía Leal, p. 121). Likewise, there is the Document dated June 15, 1577 concerning the Indians of Nochistlán to the Mayor MR of the valley of Suchulipa regarding bad treatments that mention sending Indians to serve Ju°de Frías Voice of the puo of Teocaltiche, State Public Library from Jalisco, No. 11, Leg. 1, 16th Century. Doña Ángela de Belasco, widow, wife of Gerónimo de Orosco, deceased, mentions who appeared before the notary Juan Pérez de Ribera, his son, Franco de Orosco, and presented a mrd Ssha for Mr. Don Gerónimo of Orosco, president and governor, and Cappan, general, who was from this R" to Ju Pérez de Frías, of a cattle ranch site smaller (438 hectares) and four caballeries of land (166 hectares in total) in terms of this town (Teocaltiche) in the Junta of the two rivers of Custique and the one they call the big one and up above, a hot spring in the river itself, and by the lower part a mustard. Its date in Guadalajara on October 20, 1579. These two documents were provided by the illustrious researcher Don José Alfonso Rodríguez de Carvajal y Ortiz. It is a fact that María Burgeño, Ana Pérez, and Sebastián Pérez are siblings, all born in the early 17th century. They need to be identified. The name Pérez de Frías is due to marriage records and the fact that Casilda is the daughter of Beatriz Pérez or Burgeño and granddaughter of Ana Pérez should have himself appointed from Frías. Likewise, Don José Alfonso Rodríguez de Carvajal y Ortiz mentions the possibility of the existence of a Sebastián Pérez de Frías. Initially, Jaime Holcombe mentions an unknown person with the surname Burgeño. He married María Rubio, possibly the daughter of Diego González and María Rubio, who had the following offspring (coinciding the first two): María Burgeño married to Juan López de Elizalde, Ana Burgeño married to Bartolomé Martín, Catalina Rubio married to Luis López Ramírez, N.N. married to Diego Pérez who died on July 12, 1629 and Francisco González born c. 1592. He then mentions that these offspring are the children of Juan Pérez de Frías and María López.  From the marriage the following three offspring have been documented:

1) María Burgeño or María López married to Juan López de Elizalde son of Juan López de Elizalde y Aberruza and Leonor Becerra and Sánchez de Mendoza, Chapter 81.

 2) Sebastián Pérez de Frías, who married Leonor de Rubalcava. On February 4, 1687, in Santa María de los Lagos, presented the dispensation of 3rd degree of consanguinity due to lawful copulation of Juan de Ornelas, a 40-year-old Spaniard, a natural and resident of said parish; to marry Leonor de Rubalcava, 48 years of age, widow of Sebastián Pérez, and daughter legitimate of Juan de Rubalcava and María López, where the claimant declared that María López, deceased, was his blood sister of Sebastián Pérez, husband of the said Leonor de Rubalcava, the intended bride, and the same María López, was Beatriz López's mother, and she was the mother of the said Juan de Ornelas, so that the said Sebastián Pérez was the carnal uncle of the Beatriz López, mother of the prospective groom. Sacred Mitre of Guadalajara, Records of the Series of Marriages - Extracts from the 17th and 18th Centuries, María de la Luz Montejano Hilton, Microfilm 167982-474. Rodrigo was a witness de Olivares, 44 years old, who said that Sebastián Pérez de Frías died 12 years ago, Francisco de Olivares, 37 years of age and Francisco Sánchez Moreno, 63 years of age (information provided by Mary Lou Montagna).

Possibly the same woman, Leonor González, wife of Juan Pérez de Ornelas, died on January 2, 1697.

The following three offspring have been documented from the marriage:

    a) Sebastián Pérez de Frías. On April 21, 1719, in Santa María de Los Lagos, the marriage information was presented.  Sebastián Pérez de Frías, 57 years old, son of Sebastián Pérez de Frías and Leonor de Rubalcava and widower of Josepha de Castañeda; to marry               María García, with Nicolás de Ornelas as witness, who says that the deceased Josepha de Castañeda was his aunt.

b) Marcos Pérez de Frías. On February 5, 1674, Marcos, son of Sebastian Pérez and Leonor, was baptized in Teocaltiche, hijo Sebastian Perez and Leonor Robalcava, with Diego Jiménez and María Ruiz as godparents, all Spaniards and residents of this jurisdiction.

c) Inés de Rubalcava, legitimate daughter of Sebastián Pérez and Leonor de Rubalcava, who married Juan Ximénez on the 21st May 1716 in Santa María de los Lagos.

d) Juan Pérez de Ornelas. On August 9, 1707, Juan Pérez de Ornelas, a Spaniard, presented marriage information. Originally from and resident  of this parish in Río de Santa María, legitimate son of Sebastián Pérez de Ornelas and Leonor de Rubalcava, deceased; to marry Magdalena de Valdez, a Spanish widow of Joseph Carrillo and originally from Teocaltiche and a resident of this parish for six months, legitimate daughter of Basilio de Valdez and Catalina de Anda Altamirano.

3) Ana Pérez or Burgeño, who married Bartolomé Martín. On April 25, 1699, in Santa María de los Lagos, she was noted in a dispensation from a 4th degree of consanguinity for Sebastián Hernández, a 28-year-old Spanish citizen, resident and originally from said town legitimate son of Alonso Hernández and Juana de Araujo; to marry Josepha Pérez de Ornelas, a 20-year-old Spanish woman of age, legitimate daughter of Juan Pérez de Ornelas and Leonor de Rubalcava, deceased, residents of the parish, where she declared that Ana Pérez and María Burgeño were sisters and that Ana Pérez had a daughter named Beatriz Burgeño (Beatriz Burgeño or Pérez, who married Isidro de Araujo (Chapter 85), who had a daughter, Juana de Araujo, the claimant's mother, and the aforementioned María Burgeño had a daughter, Beatriz López, mother of Juan Pérez de Ornelas, father of the claimant. Sacred Mitre from Guadalajara, Marriage Records - Extracts from the 17th and 18th Centuries, María de la Luz Montejano Hilton, Microfilm 168604-2904.

Bartolomé Martín married María Sánchez de Mendoza as his second wife, having descendants in San Juan de los Lagos according to the register of the Xalostotitlán district of 1650 (House of Bartolomé Martín, Spaniard who lives in the town of San Juan): Juan Garcia, his son of 28 anos, Lázaro de la Peña or Sánchez, a Spaniard who married Jerónima Chavarria, daughter of Juan Rodríguez de Chavarría and Beatriz de Retamosa, Joséph Sánchez de Mendoza who married D. Maria de Orozco and others children and grandchildren. The report of Fiscal proceedings of the Royal Court of Guadalajara of Santa María de los Lagos of May 10th 1612 which mentions: Diego Pérez, Bartolomé Martín and Juan López de Liçarci, his sons-in-law, indicating that at least Bartolomé Martin and Joan López de Liçarci are married to two sisters, Ana Pérez o Burgeño and María López de Elizalde respectively. Regarding another Bartolome Martin—or perhaps the same person or a relative—the following three pieces of information exist:  On December 27, 1589, in Aguascalients, Bartolome Martin married Cathalina de Espinoza, daughter of the public notary Francisco de Espinoza (a resident of Santa Maria de los Lagos who was still alive in 1605), with Rodrigo Munoz, Hernando de Villegas, Simon Galarca, and others serving as witnesses. They were veiled on March 6, 1590 in Santa María de los Lagos. On June 16, 1628, in St. Mary of the Lagos, Catalina, daughter of Bartholome Martin and Cathalina de Ortega, was baptized. with Madalena de Padilla and Don Lorenso de Padilla as godparents. On October 8, 1635, in Santa María de los Lagos, it was Bartolomé, son of Bartolomé Martín and Cathalina de Ortega, was baptized, with Pedro Gómez Portugal and his wife as godparents. Isabel Ortiz. On August 15, 1639, in Santa María de los Lagos, Nicolás, son of Bartolome Martin and of Cathalina de Ortega, his wife, and his godparents were Lieutenant Andrés López and his sister María González. From this marriage  the following four documented offspring:

a) Nicolás Martín. On March 27, 1619, Nicolás, son of Bartolomé Martín and Ana Burgeño, was baptized in Santa María de los Lagos, with Miguel Hernandez and Juana de Herrera as godparents.

b) Beatriz Burgeño who married Isidro de Araujo, Chapter 85.

c) María Burgeño. On May 3, 1663, in Santa María de los Lagos, Joseph de Espinosa, legitimate son of Francisco de Espinoza… de fernándes del pinal; with María Burgeño, legitimate daughter of Bartolomé Martín and Ana Péres, both deceased. His wedding sponsors were Ysidro de Cuebas (de Araujo) and Beatriz Burgeño, his wife. The census of this town of Santa Maria de los Lagos for the year 1669 mentions:

"Joseph de Espinoza / María de Burgeño, his wife"

d) Alfonso Pérez Burgeño. A possible son of this marriage is Alfonso Pérez Burgeño who married María de Mendoza. The following offspring has been documented from this marriage:

1) Ildefonso Pérez Burgeño. On February 12, 1663, Ildefonso was baptized in Santa María de los Lagos. (appeared to be seven months old) son of Alfonso Pérez Burgeño and María de Mendoza, natives of this. The parishioners of said town of Xalostotitlán were Ju' de Fuentes and Josepha Guttz, godparents.

4) Diego Pedro Pérez de Frías. Another possible son of this marriage is Diego Pérez de Frías: On July 9, 1656 in the Royal Court of Sierra de Pinos, Diego de Frías and Elena de Sotomayor (daughter of Juan Montañez and María de Sotomayor) were married. On

The following six offspring have been documented from this marriage:

1) José de Ornelas. On October 17, 1681, in Teocaltiche, Luis de Ornelas was baptized. On December 16 in 1708 in Teocaltiche, marriage information was presented by Joseph de Ornelas, a 26-year-old Spaniard, son of Joseph de Ornelas and Melchora de los Reyes y Pérez Frías to marry María González de Rubalcava, daughter of Joseph Rubalcava, deceased, and Petra Díaz. The claimant declared that she has two children and is expecting another. Thus, it was also documented that the grandmother of the claimant and the grandmother of the claimant were sisters. Sacred Mitre of Guadalajara, Microfilm 168114.

2) Bernardo de Ornelas who married Gabriela Sánchez Carrillo de Sandi, natural daughter of Ygnacio Carrillo de Sandi and Gertrudis Sánchez. On April 9, 1731, in Teocaltiche, Bernardo Ornelas 25 years old presented marriage information. Bernardo, son of Joseph de Ornelas and Melchora de los Reyes y Pérez, to marry Gabriela Sánchez Carrillo, 16 years of age, the natural daughter of Ignacio Carrillo de Sandi and Gertrudis Sánchez. The bride-to-be declares that... although her father would like to take her in, he is poor, has many children, and is married... and her mother has other daughters, all of whom are poor in the town of Aguascalientes and live outside this parish. It was also documented that Ignacio Carrillo was the son of Agustina Jiménez, daughter of Jacinta de las Roelas, sister of María de Sotomayor, mother of Elena de Sotomayor, mother of Melchora de los Reyes y Pérez. Sagra Mitra of Guadalajara, Microfilm 16814.

   3) Juan de Ornelas who married María González de Rubalcava daughter of Joseph González de Rubalcava and Petra Díaz.

Hello Travis,

I have not found substantiating documents that confirm or deny that Lázaro Ramos is the illegitimate son of Leonor González de Ruvalcaba or the illegitimate son of Felipe de Ruvalcaba (Leonor's brother). The uncertain parentage continued into subsequent generations which we find in the 'dispensa' for Juan de Castañeda and Catarina Ortiz date 11 may 1720:

"México, Jalisco, registros parroquiales, 1590-2022," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-D2B5-K?cc=1874591&wc=3JW5-… : 28 July 2026), Guadalajara > Diócesis de Guadalajara > Matrimonios 1705-1720 > image 616 of 630; parroquias Católicas (Catholic Church parishes), Jalisco.

The groom, Juan de Castañeda, 'español' is "originario del puesto del Tecolote, feligresía del pueblo de Nuestra Señora de San Juan y criado desde muy niño en esta feligresía [de Santa María de los Lagos] en la labor de San José de la Mololoa", and the legitimate son of Juan de Castañeda (living at the time in 'la Estanzuela', feligresía de Teocaltiche) and María Burgueño Pérez, deceased.

The bride, Catarina Ortiz, 'mestiza', is "originaria y vecina de la cañada de Patricio", and the legitimate daughter of Cristóbal Ortiz and Juana de Aguirre, 'mestizos'.

The grooms petition is for "segundo con tercero grado o de tercero con cuarto grado que no se sabe ciertamente en el grado legítimo, que sea por ser por linea bastarda". The witnesses are:

  1. Sebastián Pérez, "español, vecino de esta feligresía en el puesto de San José de la Mololoa", 'tío carnal' of the groom and 'tío en segundo grado' of the bride, and 66 years old. This is the same Sebastián Pérez from the 1709-1711 documents that you referenced and who in this document also declares that Lázaro Ramos is his step brother, "...Lázaro Ramos, abuelo de la pretensa, y María Pérez Burgueño fueron hermanos..."
  2. Diego Pérez, "español, vecino de esta feligresía en el la labor de San José de la Mololoa", brother of Sebastián Pérez, and 48 years old. Diego references the proceedings against his brother Sebastián for an illicit affair (the aforementioned 1709-1711 documents) that based on what was said from those proceedings it was said that Lázaro Ramos is the illegitimate brother of said Sebastián Pérez and therefore his brother also, although he does not know this to be true nor does he recognize him as his brother -  "...y entonces se dijo que Lázaro Ramos, abuelo de la pretensa era hermano del dicho Sebastián Pérez y por el consiguiente, suyo del testigo por linea bastarda, que lo cierto no lo sabe ni que le ha reconocido por tal hermano...". Coincidentally, I am currently researching this Diego Pérez, who appears to be the same Diego who married Teresa Valero (or Ovalle).
  3. Felipe Pérez, "español, vecino de esta feligresía en el la labor de San José de la Mololoa", brother of Sebastián and Diego Pérez, 50 years old. In his testimony Felipe provides the basis for the alternate 'tercero con cuarto grado' relationship between the groom and bride, stating that he had heard his mother say that Lázaro Ramos was the son of Felipe de Ruvalcaba, his mother's brother and thus Felipe's first cousin  -  "...le oyo decir a su madre de este testigo que Lázaro Ramos, abuelo de la pretensa Catalina Ortiz, mestiza, como había sido hijo de Felipe de Ruvalcaba, hermano de la dicha su madre y que así se lo decía para que lo tuviera el testigo por su primo hermano..."

Lázaro Ramos also appears in the 1679 'padrón' of the parish of Jalostotitlán under the household of Diego Gómez (presumably the same "Don Diego" that you listed in your post):

Estancia: Diego Gómez, Isabel Barrona, Lázaro de Ramos, María Pérez, Andrés Gómez, María Gómez

Saludos,

Austin Pérez

Introduction: Researching Rosales, Dueñas, Saldívar & Valadez (Asientos, AGS / Ojo Caliente & Bimbaletes, ZAC)

Hello Everyone,

My name is Norma  (Username: Normrivmat), and I am very grateful to be accepted into the Nuestros Ranchos community. My research focuses heavily on the border regions of eastern Aguascalientes and southeastern Zacatecas, specifically around Real de Asientos, Ojo Caliente, and Bimbaletes.

My Fully Documented Lineage:

  • Grandmother: M. Leonor Rosales Saldívar (b. May 14, 1908, Real de Asientos, AGS).Her birthday is also known as April 11, 1908 She married J. Rafael Dueñas Valadez on February 9, 1928, at Las Norias de Guadalupe, Bimbaletes, ZAC.
  • Great-Grandparents: Susano Rosales & Ambrosia Saldívar. I have verified their parentage via their March 16, 1895, Marriage Investigation file from Ojo Caliente, ZAC.
  • Great-Great-Grandparents: Genaro Rosales & Dionisia Vázquez. Genaro passed away on April 6, 1906, in Real de Asientos, AGS (calculated birth year ~1846).

What I Am Searching For & Why:

My primary brick wall is finding the parentage of my great-great-grandfather, Genaro Rosales

Hola Norma:

According to the baptism records of their children, Genaro was the son of Wenceslao Rosales and Maria Dolores Macias, who were apparently from Encarnacion de Diaz, Jalisco. Here is the marriage record of his parents:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:684P-9DZ1?lang=en

Maria Dionisia Vazquez also used the surname Garcia (they are the same person; if you notice, on son Buenaventura’s baptism record, she is called Garcia, while on his death registry, she’s called Vazquez). The names of her parents vary in the records (and so do those of Genaro’s parents on the baptism records of twins Juan & Juana). This was a common mistake, especially in towns where the parents' didn't originate. Here are the baptism records I've found for their children:

Barbara Rosales Vasquez: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6M8M-CYPZ?lang=en
Twins Juan & Juana Rosales Vasquez:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6MN4-ZH2M?lang=en
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6MXB-47T2?lang=en
Magdaleno Rosales Garcia: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6D2C-8MQT?lang=en
Daniel Rosales Garcia: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QJ7X-4RHD?lang=en
Buenaventura Rosales Garcia (baptism): https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6ZJP-6YXS?lang=en
Buenaventura Rosales Vasquez (death):
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QLT3-Z1DX?lang=en

The earliest are in Fresnillo, Zac, so that might be a good place to look for their marriage record.

I hope that helps! Welcome to the group!
Saludos,
Manny Díez Hermosillo

Hola de nuevo,

Here's the baptism record of Genaro Rosales: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6845-8V6C?lang=en

Baptized 17 Jul 1836, 7 days old; they listed his mother as Maria Dolores Mendez, though they have her parents' names correct. "Mendez" might be a typo, or maybe it's an ancestral surname.

Saludos!

Manny
