DNA Results

Hi all,

Hi Armando,

Thanks again for the input and calculations.

I actually bought a Geno2.0 kit in order to get my own ethnic percentile estimate. I chose them since it seems to me they have a pretty strong database to make their calculations, not just from tests people bought, but also from their own field research. I will mail it in a few weeks when I "make a run for the border", I look forward to getting those results.

However, for my parents samples I decided to try the Family Finder tests since they also offer the "DNA cousin comparison" and I would like to see if finding distant cousins from other lines than the direct paternal and maternal ones helps me to break some brick-walls in my genealogical research (such as discovering if my Navarro family does come from Jalisco as one undocumented source claims).

Have a nice weekend!

Hi Armando,
I ran some FTDNA results through the program you suggested. Could you please provide a comparison to Spanish and other European populations sources? Family Finder only gives us Europe (Finnish, Russian), Middle East (North Africa, Mozabite), South Asia (North Indian and Southeast Indian) and Native American ("Central American", Maya). The program you suggested gives quite different results, even using its different calculators.

Chromosome #SNPs
All 166255

Siberian 1.47
Amerindian 42.10
West_African 4.46
Palaeo_African 0.44
Southwest_Asian 5.13
East_Asian 1.25
Mediterranean 20.04
Australasian 0.03
Arctic 1.71
West_Asian 6.40
North_European 14.36
South_Asian 0.98
East_African 1.62

Most of the FTDNA matches we get include the old families from NE Mexico and Texas: González, de la Garza, Elizondo, Villarreal, Cantú, etc. I understand that at least the Elizondo family got to NE Mexico through Mazapil, Zacatecas. We also have a Hernández line that goes back to Gruñidora, Zacatecas. Besides them, most of our other lines come from Coahuila and Nuevo León.

Best regards,
Victoriano Navarro

Hello Victoriano,

FTDNA provides a region name then it provides in parenthesis the demonym of ethnic groups that have a larger percent of those autosomal markers. However, the autosomal markers showed up thousands of years before those ethnic groups came into being. Also, those ethnic groups have a mix of markers. For example Russians are a mix of Siberian, Southwest_Asian, Mediterranean, Arctic, West_Asian, North_European, and South_Asian. Likewise Spanish are a mix of many of those and they have 36.8% North_European. That does not mean Spaniards descend from Russians. It means the people that gave Russians 68.5% of their autosomal DNA also gave Spaniards 36.8% percent of their autosomal DNA. We have no idea who those people were that first had the North_European markers nor do we know for sure when they populated the rest of Europe.

The Middle East is also a mix of ancestral components, or ancient autosomal DNA. The whole world except a few rare groups have a mix of ancestral components.

The ancestral components that Geno 2.0 uses are

Northeast Asian
Mediterranean
Southern African
Southwest Asian
Native American
Oceanian
Southeast Asian
Northern European
Sub-Saharan African

The components that globe13 uses are the ones that you posted.

If you go to the globe13 page http://dodecad.blogspot.com/2012/10/globe13-calculator.html and download the spreadsheet you will find what I have below.

The following are what the Spanish consist of -

Siberian 0
Amerindian 0
West_African 0.9
Palaeo_African 0.1
Southwest_Asian 5.6
East_Asian 0
Mediterranean 50.4
Australasian 0
Arctic 0
West_Asian 5.1
North_European 36.8
South_Asian 0.4
East_African 0.6

Since the vast majority of the European ancestors of Mexicans are Spaniards then I feel it is reasonable to use the ancestral components of the Spanish for our European ancestry. The FTDNA results that you ran through the calculator show to have 40% of the North_European and Mediterranean components that the Spanish have. So then I use 40% of the other components that the Spanish have for that person's results. What remains is 54% Amerindian, 40% Spanish, and 6% African.

If the person has a well documented tree this should fit well with their tree given that the DNA we inherit is random. We don't inherit it in the exact percentages that we have documented ancestry. I have used this method for my ancestry, my uncle's, my wife's and a few more people. The data agrees, in a reasonable range, with our documented trees. This method also matches well with what Geno 2.0 reported on my wife's results once I added the Geno 2.0 reference populations in the same percentages as her known ancestry.

Armando

Hi Armando,

Thanks for the info. According to FTDNA our sample's percentiles are 26.4% Europe (Finnish, Russian), 22.9% Middle East (North Africa, Mozabite), 6.7% South Asia (North Indian and Southeast Indian) and y 44% Native American (México and Centroamérica).
By comparing it to the NatGeo Geno2.0 reference populations and based on our genealogical research, I estimated these numbers added up to 56% Iberian and 44% Amerindian, similar to your estimate based on Globe13 results, but not quite the same.
FTDNA does mention Population Finder is a beta project and thus the percentiles given may vary over time, so I guess this is far from being an exact science.

Victoriano Navarro

Comentario

FTDNA terminology and methodology is outdated. It should be used only as a reference to what was used in the past. It has been in Beta for years.

The Geno 2.0 testing is done by FTDNA but the terminology and presentation are different and Geno 2.0 actually provides source population info on the admixture of many countries, regions, and ethnic groups from around the world. This is because Geno 2.0 is newer and updated. It is far better in those regards.

The reason you estimated differently than me is because you didn't divide your sample's North European and Mediterranean percentages by the percentage found in either the Geno 2.0 or the Globe13 North European and Mediterranean percentages for the Spanish or Iberian population. If you do that it comes out to around 40% +-2%. If you multiply the 40% times the other components that exist in the Spanish population you still end up with about 40%. If you subtract the Spanish amounts of Asian DNA and add the remaining Asian DNA to the Amerindian DNA then the total is about 54.55% of Amerindian+plus non-Spanish Asian. Once I redid the calculation on the non-Spanish African it comes out to 4.13% and there is 1.3% that didn't get calculated in for any of the others. It could partially be Spanish, Amerindian, and African for that 1.3% or all of it could belong to just one population.

The reason I used all of North European and Mediterranean percentages from the sample for the Spanish or Iberian population is because those components don't exist in significant amounts in the Amerindian or African populations. But yu

It seems that there are some missing branches in the genealogy of the sample, especially the African ancestry, since I calculated in African ancestry of the Spanish population. It could be a Moor, mulato, or other. The Amerindian ancestry that you didn't calculate in are probably from the female lines that aren't documented. Even though there are some exceptions, including my own ancestors, most men did not take wives, and/or daughters to Mexico. That means there are more Amerindian ancestors that aren't documented but since they married Spaniards and so did their daughters, granddaughters and so on they considered themselves Spanish. This is where finding people with the female line from Mexico with European mtDNA becomes very interesting.

Here is a table of my updated calculations.

Components Spanish Amerindian African
Siberian 0.00 1.47 0.00
Amerindian 0.00 42.10 0.00
West_African 0.36 0.00 2.68
Palaeo_African 0.18 0.00 0.40
Southwest_Asian 2.05 3.08 0.00
East_Asian 0.00 1.25 0.00
Mediterranean 20.04 0.00 0.00
Australasian 0.00 0.00 0.03
Arctic 0.00 1.71 0.00
West_Asian 2.04 4.36 0.00
North_European 14.36 0.00 0.00
South_Asian 0.40 0.58 0.00
East_African 0.60 0.00 1.02
Total 40.03 54.55 4.13

Hello Laura,

Family Finder does not provide haplogroup info. You need to get an mtDNA
test for the maternal line and a male has to get the Y-DNA test for the
paternal line.

For your ancestry percentage the best calculator is the Globe13 at
http://www.y-str.org/tools/diy-dodecad-wrapper/

You have to download your raw file from Family Finder first then drag it
into the DIYdodecadwrapper and choosing globe13 out of the list of
calculators.

You can save the results as a text file. Post them here I can provide a
comparison to Spanish and other European populations sources.

The Globe13 calculator uses terminology that closely matches the National
Geographic Geno 2.0 test.

https://genographic.nationalgeographic.com/overview-of-regions-and-clos…

https://genographic.nationalgeographic.com/overview-of-regions-and-clos…

The other two items that Family Finder provides are matches with a
calculated relationship and a chromosome browser. The match calculation
isn't very accurate past 3 generations since the amount of DNA is random
but a common ancestor can be found with triangulation, even at 10
generations, if there are enough matches on the same chromosome on the same
region and multiple people have well documented trees. If multiple
ancestors are shared the most recent ancestors in common will be the ones
that passed the DNA down to you. You can find out who matches you on the
which chromosomes by downloading the chromosome browser information through
www.dnagedcom.com

Once you have the chromosome browser you can separate the matches by
chromosome. You can use my template to copy and past matches according to
their chromosome.

There are now two different DNA projects for our region which I recommend
that you join.

Hola Juan,

Victoriano,

After looking at a table of contents, it seems image 597 belongs to a different set of documents about Nuestra Señora de Purificación... (which doesn't seem to be nearby). The documents about San Cristobal de la Barranca begin at image 598 and go to 600. Thank you for your help, that makes the documents a bit more understandable. Their roles then, are that of declarantes/testigos.

Subject: [Nuestros Ranchos] Manuel Rodriguez from Mazamitla, Jalisco

Hello,

I have been researching my father's family for a while, and it all has been a straightforward process--until now. I am trying to find the marriage records for my great great grandfather Manuel Rodriguez and my great great grandmother Trinidad Silva, who were presumably married in Mazamitla, Jalisco in 1865. Manuel Rodriguez is the son of Jose Jesus Rodriguez and Maria de Jesus Martinez. Trinidad Silva is the daughter of Vicente Silva and Rita Silva. I have parsed through the marriage records for Mazamitla and nearby Quitupan, but marriage records do not exist for 1864-1867 and 1862-1867, respectively. Their marriage records are the only thing that could tell me where they came from, seeing as nobody in my extended family knows. Do I look in military records? Do I leave open the possibility that they may have come from elsewhere? What other resources do I turn to? Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I just got my results back from FTDNA, and it's rather confusing. I'll check out the sites you mentioned above, at a more decent hour. :-)

I ordered the basic Family Finder test. Does that find your haplogroup? Or do I need to order another test to find the haplogroup? I don't see this in my "info."

Thanks!

Comentario

Laura, to identify your matrilineal haplogroup you need to order one of
the mtDNA tests. To find out the Y-DNA haplogroup in your family you will
need to recruit your father, brother, paternal uncle or son of a paternal
uncle. The Family Finder results are from your autosomal DNA, that which
you randomly inherit from both your parents.

Subject: [Nuestros Ranchos] Introduction of Stacy Latocha

Hi, my name is Stacy Latocha and I am trying to continue research on my
family.  I know that two of my great-grandparents were born in the Nuestros
Ranchos area.  Great Grandfather Francisco Reyes was born in Zacatecas and
died in Torreon in December 1944.  I have had absolutely zero luck finding
anything out about him at all.

Great Grandmother Maria Juana Joaquina Garcia born in San Juan de los Lagos
16 August 1888. I have been able to tease out her background to a degree,
but I would like to go further.

I am at the marriage record for her grandparents Don Cipriano Garcia and
Dona Teodosia Franco.  However I am now stuck!  I cannot read this or make
sense of it.  Can someone with a further background in the abbreviations
help me?  I am looking at the second record down on the left.  None of my
Spanish speaking family can help me.

Any suggestions regarding Zacatecas research would be appreciated.
Best,
Stacy

Thank you very much. I think the biggest problem was being able to read the writing.

I really appreciate it!! You just lead me to my great-grandmother's great-grandmother (thanks to Family Search!)

Also, just in case anyone else reads this, Francisco Reyes was from Fresnillo, Zacatecas.

I have Aurelia Garcia Franco, born 15 Nov 1867 in San Juan de los Lagos, daughter of Cipriano Garcia and Teodosia Franco. The writing on her birth record is tough to read, but the paternal/maternal grandparents look to be the same, so she must be an older sister of Maria Juana Joaquina Garcia. Aurelia Garcia married Atanasio Becerra 7 Sep 1891, in San Juan de los Lagos. Her parents are both listed as living at that time. Do you have additional dates - birth/death -for Cipriano Garcia and Teodosia Franco?

Strategy for finding the Informacion Matrimonial Calvillo, Ags.

I have a marrige from august 16 1832 in Calvillo, Ags. I have trouble trying to decide how early before to look for the Informacion Matrimonial. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Announcements (banns) are supposed to be made three consecutive Sundays prior to the wedding, so this suggests at least three weeks prior. However, I've also seen the informacion matrimonial much closer to the wedding.

If a dispensation is needed, it could be months prior.

Thus, I think 6 weeks prior is a good time to start; if you don't find anything, try 2 or 3 months prior to that.

If the informacion matrimonial is not found, it is also possible that it was done in a different parish if one of the partners was not from the parish where the wedding took place.

AGN

Hello, I was just wondering if anyone has written to the AGN in MX before with any results? Did you receive a response to your query ?

Thanks!

Earlier this year I e-mailed them asking if they had copies of the documents of the Mexico City Archive Carlos Sigüenza & Góngora and they replied they didn't.

I also went to the AGN in order to see if they had more Mexican microfilms than the LDS (familysearch), but turns out they have the same ones.

DNA Testing

Is there a separate "area," on NR for posting dna test results?

Hello Edward,

The books on DNA testing are outdated and don't do proper comparisons or
explanations. DNA testing is a new field and advances are happening too
rapidly. Learning is done through websites and blogs.

Ancestry.com and Family Finder do autosomal testing. Autosomal testing
looks at the DNA that you inherited from all of your ancestral lines. You
don't inherit autosomal DNA from all of your ancestors but you do inherit
autosomal DNA from all of your ancestors. It can be confusing and hard to
explain. The following site has charts that can somewhat explain what you
are wanting to know http://www.dnainheritance.kahikatea.net/autosomal.html

Family Finder is much better than Ancestry.com because it allows you to see
which chromosome you coincide with your matches. This allows for
triangulation in order to pinpoint which ancestors passed down that segment
of autosomal DNA. Family Finder also tells you how much autosomal DNA you
have in common. Anything less than 5.5 is called IBS Identity by State and
is insignificant.

Ancestry.com is also different than Family Finder which is also different
from 23andme which is also different than Geno 2.0. I prefer using the
Family Finder raw data and running it through the Dodecad Globe13 which
includes Amerindian testing and also has a source database. Only Globe13
and Geno 2.0 inlcude source population info. They are the most transparent
calculators. The names of the ancestral components of Globe13 closely match
those of Gen0 2.0. A program for using the Globe13 calculator is at
http://www.y-str.org/tools/diy-dodecad-wrapper/

You can download all of your Family Finder files by using
http://www.dnagedcom.com/FamilyTreeDNA/default.aspx

Y-DNA helps identify the paternal line and can provide matches on the
paternal line. If you relatives that you don't know their paternal then
they should get a Y-DNA test. The mtDNA is strictly the female line. If you
have relatives for which you can't identify the female line the mtDNA test
might help but since the mtDNA changes so slowly it is hard to identify how
two females are related. It is more for determining if it is Amerindian or
European.

If your relatives get an autosomal test it will help with triangulation.
http://dna-explained.com/2013/06/21/triangulation-for-autosomal-dna/

If you upload your raw Family Finder data to www.gedmatch.com you will be
able to triangulate with others once that feature is put back on the site.
It takes 6 weeks for the file to process so you want to get the file
uploaded as soon as possible.

You should also read the following presentation on autosomal testing

Hello my name is Edward Arce Luna I'm really new at this DNA testing, but I
would like
some information. I have done DNA testing on ancestry.com I did the
paternal and maternal testing I've also did family Finder DNA testing on
family tree DNA . I would like to get some of my siblings, uncles, aunts,
Tested. I'm not sure which test would benefit me, Would it be the
Paternal DNA or maternal or family finder testing.?Any books or any website
you
Can recommend that would give some basic information on the DNA testing
interpretations?
I have done the DNA testing on ancestry.com. Which is the paternal and
maternal.
I also done some DNA testing on family DNA. Now the family Finder DNA
results are somewhat different compared to the ancestry.com DNA testing I'm
a little confused!

I just noticed an error in my previous post. I was trying to write it all
too fast. The correction is "You don't inherit autosomal DNA from all of
your ancestors but you do inherit autosomal DNA segments from ancestors
that existed through any of your ancestral lines." I hope that makes more
sense especially with the content of the rest of the post.
