Ok I need help from the group. Can anyone help me find my grandfather

For your parents and probably grandparents birth records of Matanzas you probably need to go to Ojuelos de Jalisco, or find someone that will go for you, to request a copy of the birth certificate. Or you can wait until records show up on pilot.familysearch.org

If you have a relative or friend in Mexico that has Telmex they should be able to access the white pages online for Tamaulipas using their account. I don't know how else you would find a phone book for those towns unless you went there yourself.

To Maria Cortes:

In the time period you are looking at, I think your best bet at locating
your grandparents would be the 1930 Mexico Census. The original images are

I looked in a book titled Census Records for Latin America and the Hispanic
United States written by Lyman D. Platt and there are only Censuses for
Ojuelos from 1817 to 1825, they are probably Padrones. Lagos de Moreno about
the same distance in the opposite direction from Matanzas as Ojuelos has a
more recent census (padron most likely) of 1874 and another in 1810 the
first film 221884 and the second 83. Lagos which is the same as Lagos de
Moreno in the book has padrones in 1820, 1824, & 1831 films: 168822, 168833,
and 168847-48 respectively.

Actually Antonio Cortez and Ma Manuela Alvarado...they were my grandparents they are both deceased. I'm doing Geneology on them I can not find them anywhere so I need help to find any records on them. They were both born in Matansas Jalisco.

Eusebio Cortez Alvarado is my uncle I'm not even sure if he is still alive...I'm just trying to see if I can track him down. I did know that my father had one brother and when I found out 3 years ago....that is when I started my search for him in Gonzalez Tamaulipas or Manuel Tamaulipas but still no luck.

Thanks

Cortes.

For Maria Cortes: my advice is that once you located the place, Matansas, try related web sites like Panoramio or use Google Earth, some people use tu upload pictures of family or of places, you could try to contact some using the mail adresses in those pictures; other way is  to look for clubs in the U. S. A., also social reunion events annouced in the web, from that place. For location and some info use pueblos.america.com site. Hope it is a help. Take care. Always be precautios.

Thank you I will try the website.  For my grandparents...I have no one in Mexico that can help me so I guess I will have to wait for them to get posted at Family History Reasearch.

Thank you all.

I have looked in pilot 1930 census but Matansas Jalisco is not listed. Ojuelos de Jalisco is the Municipal and I have looked in both places Family Search and Nuestro Rancho but the years are not listed in Nuestro Rancho and I can find them in Family Search.

I got my dad B-Certificate from Ojuelos de Jalisco because he was also born in Matansas but that was 3 years ago. I have not been back since then due to work and time.

Comentario

I made a mistake of assuming Nuestros Ranchos has a complete listing of Ojuelos de Jalisco. I found that there are records for both Matanzas and Ojuelos de Jalisco for the years you are asking about. Have you looked at all of the ones listed at Family History Library Catalog for those years?

Matanzas - http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library/fhlcatalog/printing/titledetail…
Ojuelos - http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library/fhlcatalog/printing/titledetail…

I'm not sure I'm understanding your question but it sounds like you are
looking for living relatives and or their children. One way is to get a
phone book from that area of Mexico and specifically that city and then
call all the Cortez Alvarado's first then if you have a good calling
plan for inexpensive calls to Mexico (try http://stiphonecard.com/ I
have found them very cheap) try calling every Cortez in that city giving
much information about you and finally asking if their Cortez might be
the same Cortez.

just an idea for searching for living relatives.

To Evelyn,

In addition to what Arturo said you should consider the following. Cabillo may also be "Calvillo, Calbillo, Cavillo" and probably other ways of phonetically spelling that surname. Good luck!

Evelyn:

David's insightful guessing at the correct name was the breakthrough we needed.

There is an Emilia CALVILLO baptized on 21 Apr 1882 in Union de San Antonio, Jalisco, daughter of Ignacio Calvillo and Felipa Gutierrez. You can find it searching on the familysearch pilot website as it does not appear in the regular IGI or VRI.

It's a hunch but I would be willing to bet that this is Carlos' mother. You can find the baptism record on Film 440518. That record should list the precise village in Union de San Antonio where her family lived which may give some clues as to where you might find the family in the 1930 Census. I would also order the relevant 1902 baptism film from the same town while you are at it and try to find Carlos' baptism. His baptism is too recent to appear extracted online but I would be willing to bet that he was baptized in Union de San Antonio, like his mother.

Comentario

Evelyn:

Welcome to the group. To begin with, the name CABILLO seems a bit awry. You have to take into account people's lack of literacy and often confusion of record keepers... so given the strange name I would consider other similar names such as CARRILLO or CABELLO in your searches. Also, there is no single "Union" in Jalisco, but rather a number of different Uniones:

Union de Guadalupe (Atoyac)
Union de San Antonio
Union de Tula

Now, there are a number of sources worth looking into to try to get more information:

Mexico Border Crossing Records, searchable on Ancestry.com
(His border crossing might have more information or more correct information than his naturalization record)

Mexico 1930 Census available on pilot.familysearch.org
(He may not be there but his parents and siblings might still be. This is not searchable for Jalisco yet, but you can browse the images for the three Uniones in question, though that may be too time consuming without having more information about which particular Union and what village in that Union, etc. he was from).

Mexico Baptism records available on microfilm through the Church of Latter Day Saints through their family history centers. Again you would need to either order the relevant films for all three Uniones or try to figure out which Union he was from.

Links to all of these sources are available on the website in the Links section.

Good luck!

from Judge58@aol.com

Dear TCARA members,

The SAR cordially invites you to participate in our trip to Spain to honor Spain's assistance during the American Revolutionary War. We're meeting the King of Spain and conducting a Charter celebration for the new SAR Society in Spain. We're paying homage to Gen. Bernardo Galvez in his home town, and at the Malaga Cathedral, where he was successful in obtaining the money they had saved up to build the south tower of the cathedral.

Please forward this message to the Bexar County Hispanic Genealogy Society, the Canary Island Assn, and the Granaderos de Galvez, as I don't have their respective e-mail addresses.

Details of the trip are as follows:

Please join us for the SAR trip to Spain from May 10 - 20, 2010. Group airline rates from Washington, DC are available. Stay in outstanding hotels, and enjoy delicious Spanish food. In Madrid, we are scheduled to have an audience with King Juan Carlos, who is an SAR member. The tour includes visits to the Royal Palace, Royal Armory, Army Museum, Navy Museum, Plaza Mayor, and the incomparable Prado Museum. While in Madrid we will visit El Escorial, burial site of ancient Spanish Royalty, and scenic Toledo, where the finest steel swords in the world are made. In Madrid there will be a reception at the US Embassy, where hopefully we will visit with the US Ambassador to Spain.

By train and bus we travel to Macharaviaya, the home town of General Bernardo Galvez for a celebration, followed by a ceremony at the Malaga Cathedral, where the church donated their fund for the construction of the South Tower to Gen Galvez. These funds were used for arms and ammunition to protect the Mississippi River and Gulf Coast from the British during the Revolutionary War. In Malaga visits are also planned to Gibralfaro Castle and the Old Quarter.

In Granada we will visit the incomparable Alhambra Palace, where we will gain insight into the lives of the Moors, who conquered most of Spain and occupied it for 700 years. On the Costa Del Sol, there will be time for swimming, shopping, or leisure strolls along the boardwalk. Also included is a visit to scenic Rhonda. En route we stop to view the construction of the brig Galveztown.

Consider an extra few days on the post trip extension which will allow time for visits to historic Gibraltar, and exotic Tangier, Morocco. To register and insure a place on the tour, send $200.00 per person to David Eld, Magic Meetings and Incentives, 3901 North Stevens St., Alexandria, Virginia, 22133. For additional information contact him at 703-379-8071 or e-mail him at deld@magicglobal.com Final payment due NLT Feb. 10, 2010.

A $200 deposit per person is required by 9/30/09 for the main trip and an additional $100 per person for the extension.

We hope that you will join us on this historic event.

Fraternally,

Ed Butler

Savor the scenic side trips in the south of Spain to the exotic Alhambra Palace near Granada; enjoy a celebration in the small home town of Gen. Galvez; delight in the magnificent vista from Rhonda, historic Gibraltar, and an optional day trip to explore Tangier, Morocco.

In Madrid tour the Royal Palace and Armory, and hopefully have an audience with SAR member King Juan Carlos. > Please join us for a wonderful 10 day trip to Spain, May 10-20, 2010. We will visit the Cathedral in Malaga, where the church members donated the money for the second tower of the church to Gen Bernardo Galvez, for guns, ammunition, and supplies to fight the English up the Mississippi and along the Gulf Coast. There will be time for lounging on the beach along the Costa Del Sol.
>
In Madrid we will visit the incomparable Prado Museum, see El Cid’s huge sword at the Army Museum and marvel at the ship models in the Naval Museum. There will be time for a casual stroll through the magnificent Plaza Major, where you can savor some tapas. Side trips include visits to historic Toledo and stately Escorial, burial place of many Spanish kings.

Hi there Alicia and Arturo ,

Joseph has a very good point there , we do owe you great deal for all your hard work and efforts . You really make our lives much easier . It's kinda like that duck in the pond thing , you only see the duck on the surface of the water floating around all nice and smooth , but what we don't see is the fact that under the water the duck feet are paddling away .

Thank you Alicia and Arturo from the bottom of my heart !

Salvador, I have returned home.  My son John died on Aug 13th and I took him to be buried in California last week.  It's been a very hard couple of months for us all.  He was ill for a long time so he is at peace finally.

I am not sure what you would like a copy of?  I have posted all my records on Rootsweb.com and don't know how to send gedcoms for parts of the files.  I am a computer dummy...

I am more than happy to share, just let me know what it is you would like.

Thank you, I don't copy all files completely but I've found that there is so much information that I don't use but have stored in my records it would be a waste to just sit on it when others can use but but may not have the time or availability of a history center. That's another great thing about a group like this, we can all profit from sharing.

If anyone received an urgent message from Patricia, please ignore. I spoke to her and she is fine. She mentioned that Yahoo contacted her and suggested she change her email address. It seem that her information was compromised.

I did watch, and while it was entertaining I found it lacking. It was an over view of the DNA trail out of Africa and did not really touch on any specific haplogroups, especially the Y DNA haplogroups.

They did touch on the mtDNA group "B" which I enjoyed as my mtDNA group is "B". I think it would be best to do a series of shows and touch on specifics as opposed to leaving us wanting more from a 2 hr show.

Best, Robert ~

I saw a sneak peek on Friday, courtesy of a relative who works for IBM. It
was an hour sneak peek, and the program, I believe, filled a two hour
block. I don't get the National Geographic Channel, so didn't get to watch
the whole program. What I saw was very good. Nothing new, but put it in an
easy-to-understand and interesting format. I emailed all my relatives,
encouraging them to see it. Sorry I didn't think to do the same for my
Nuestros Ranchos family!

That's great! It's amazing how we find some of our ancestors information.
Good luck and I will keep posting on my findings. I, too, usually stick to
just the microfilms for information.

Eric,
Thank you so much for your kind offer to help. Yes, you're absolutely right about the miss-spellings. It's a minor miracle I found my mother Enedina Onate, as she was entered as Pardina! I have Onate crossings at Laredo, TX from 1917 to 1944 en route to San Antonio, and they rendered some good information. I was hoping to search two other border crossing towns Del Rio, TX and Eagle Pass, TX within the time frame of 1910-1940. Unfortunately, all I can give you are the first names of my Onates: Rosalio, Petra, Adolfo, Leonarda, Luis, and Maria Angela. I will totally understand if the information I'm giving you is to too vague. Thanks again for your generous offer and have a good evening.

Alice,

Outside of a trip to a NARA archives and browsing miles of Microfilm,
Ancestry is the only way. I have a subscription and much success searching
these. I've collected almost a hundred with my families on them. There is a
wide variety of forms, some with minimal information, some with extensive.
The quality is fair to poor. Misspellings seem to be the rule rather than
the exception.

If you give me the facts I'll look it up for you. Please include full
names, birth dates, approximate dates of crossing, destination, place of
origin, and other family members if you have them.

Alice,

Seems you had more information than you gave. If you have the Laredo
crossings, you knew they would have been born around 1900 and were from
Aguacalientes? That's if the Adolfo is your Onate. Do you have their
mother's family name?

Which are siblings and which are parents?

Do you have them on the 1930 census in San Antonio?

Do you know if crossed other places or are you just hoping for more
information?

Not trying to be mean or nosy, just need every clue to winnow them out of
the crowd.

I'm familiar with research in these places. My g grandfather Dr L. E.
Calleja operated a medical clinic in Piedras Negras while living across the
border in Eagle Pass during the late 1920s and 30s. After he died in '35,
his widow lived in Laredo. Their daughters Esperanza and Consuelo worked for
the Mexican Embassay in San Antonio.

My Robledo family lived in San Antonio since 1926 after fleeing the
revolution and losing their property, My G grandfather worked as a Pullman
conductor on the San Antonio to Laredo to Mexico City line until the 1950s

Alice ,

I looked at the record you are talking about for your mother. This what I
get from it

Enedina Onate de Bravo
record date 9-23-1944
age 27 years born at Monterrey, Nuevo Leon , Mexico

accompanied by Maria Teresa- 5 years

there is a date of 5-14-1915 , not sure what it means
I can't make out the line with name and address of relative or friend in
Mexico

She signs it Enedina O de Bravo, so I'll look for crossings under de Bravo
now.

Hello Eric,
You're not mean, you're extremely thoughtful! Thank you, yes those are my parents. However, another problem with these border crossing documents is that the info is inaccurate. My mother had told us that in order to "expedite" the process, they all claimed to be from Monterrey, which wasn't true. It's my Onates that I'm having trouble with. This is what I've got: My maternal ggrandparents are Rosalio Onate and Petra Candelas. Their children were Maria Angela, Luis, Adolfo, and Leonarda. Rosalio, Maria Angela, and Pedro (her son?)acrossed on 02/12/1917 claiming Villa Garcia, Zac as where they're from.

Then there's another family crossing this time including Adolfo on 04/16/1920 where they all claim they're from Aguascalientes. I've never seen Petra, Leonarda, or Luis on the Laredo crossings and I know that Leonarda also visited San Antonio, so she might have crossed at Del Rio or Eagle Pass. That might give birthdates to work with. As a matter of fact, I've found a Petra Candelas death record in San Antonio that indicates she was married, names Francisco Candelas as father, but doesn't name the spouse or mother! So, I can't verify it's my Petra, because mine was married to Rosalio. I know that her daughter Maria Angela was living in SA then. I'm not sure that the actual Texas Deaths film contains more info? 1930 Aguas, Aguas Census doesn't show any of these people, neither do they show in any family history search. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks again for you thoughfulness.

Alice,

Maybe you can get the death certificate itself from Bexar county. I've
gotten one from them before to determine if a Robledo was related to us. It
cost under $20. I'll look around this week and see if I can find the
procedure to follow.

Have you tried using the 1930 Mexico Census at the family Search Pilot Site
http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start

" Expediting" was often neccesary. My great grandmother was coming to visit
San Antonio in the late '30s and was deneied entry because she didn't have a
birth certificate. She was Scotch/English but had lived in Mexico since she
was a young child, but was born in Iowa. It took over 3 months of legal
wrangling to get her in. This when it was decided my grandfather was "born"
in Chicago. All his earlier Border crossings showed his birthplace as San
Luis Potosi. Good thing they didn't have computers then.
So my dad became Bob Edgar, not Heladio Robledo Calleja.

Good Afternoon Eric,
I have one last known living contact of my mother's Onate family, an older cousin (granddaugher of my greataunt Maria Angela Onate)that now lives out of state, but lived many years in San Antonio with Maria Angela. I email her regularly to pick her brain. She told me that like many of our antepasados, genealogy didn't mean much to her grandmother, Maria Angela, so before she died she burned all the old pictures and documents. Weird, because my mother did the same thing and they didn't really know each other. When I told my cousin about a Petra Candelas (our ggrandmother)death in SA, she also looked up the certificate online and said that was a different woman, as the birthdate was off and the death certificate was signed by a person unknown to her. So, I'm back at square one, hoping to find Del Rio/Eagle Pass border crossing info for birthyears and places on Petra Candelas, Leornarda Onate, or Luis Onate. Take care and thanks again for your help. Alice Blake

Hi Angie,
What a great idea! I was hoping someone from our group of nearly 400 would come up with some help. I'll contact it tomorrow and hopefully they do subscribe. Being so close to the border and the destination of so many that crossed, I would hope that the San Antonio library offers it. Thanks again for coming through for me. Alice Blake

Alice,

Have you tried your local public library. The library near me also has a Ancestry.com subscription. The library has access to databases: a newpaper archive, a obit archive, and Ancestry.com, plus others... You may want to try asking your local library.

Good Luck,
Angie Godina

Alice,

Have you tried your local public library. The library near me also has a Ancestry.com subscription. The library has access to databases: a newpaper archive, a obit archive, and Ancestry.com, plus others... You may want to try asking your local library.

Good Luck,

Esta pareja parece haber bautizado por lo menos uno de sus hijos en Yahualica, que no queda muy lejos de Cuquio:

Jose Cayetano Gonzalez b. 9 Agosto 1827, Batch J602352, Rollo 1152476

Alice,

While not extremely common to have the priest as the padrino, it is common enough and still happens to this day. My cousins who live in Mexico have had the priest as the Padrino of their children as they are very close to the priest.

Alice,

I have seen not only priests, but others higher up in their hierarchy named as godfathers. Usually it is a family member or good friend of the family, and of course they were upper class (all those Dons and Donas). I think the godfather would be expected to be the spiritual guide for the child, and in his position he would be able to arrange for shelter, schooling, etc. and not really be expected to raise the child himself.

Raquel, that's exactly how I reacted; but like I said, I've only been doing this for a couple of years (when my job allows it). During these years, I've read all posting, but had never come across or heard from others that they had encountered this in their families. I can only guess he was family or a good friend of the family. Thanks so much for your response.

Another child for Thomas de Villalpando and Maria de Vargas

In going through the Informacion Matrimonial for Aguascalientes, 1711, I found another child for Thomas de Villalpando and Maria de Vargas.

Daniel

I have gone through the Informacion Matrimonial for Aguascalientes from the beginning (1666) to 1699 completely, and am working on the early 1700s. A number of 1700s films are currently off-line, so my data is not yeyt complete. I've posted the first part (through 1699) under Aguascalientes Marriages in the Files area.

I don't know what time period you are interested in, but this is what I have:

Vol 1696/97, image 100
Eugenio Losano, son of Joseph Losano and Petrona Gonzales, and Maria Duron, daughter of Andres Duron and Juana Basques.

There is no Jose Ruis de Esparza, but several Josephs:

vol 1703, image 123, Padres no conosodios (this is for Joseph de Esparza)
vol 1698/1701, image 115, son of Martin Ruis de Esparza and Francisca Zotelo de Jaen
vol 1698/1701, iamge 343, son of Alonso Ruis Mateo and Matiana Ruis de Esparza
vol 1701, image 1, son of Alonso Ruis Mateo and Matiana Ruis de Esparza (this is a continuation of the previous record).

Hopefully, this is helpful.

Hi George,

many thanks yup thats my Eugenio and Maria Duron or Duran. I see both in all sorts of records. The Joseph Ruiz de Esparza im looking for is ca. 1730 he actually married the daughter of Eugenio Lozano. The Duran/Vasquez line goes into Nochistlan, so Im stuck there.

This is the new info I have maybe you have these in your database.

Eugenio Lozano was son of Jose Lozano and Petronila Gonzalez aka Petrona de Macias y Valades, aka Petronila de Retamosa. I found there marriage in Teocaltiche 23 feb 1666. On the other side Maria Duron (Duran) daughter of Jose Andres Duran and Juana Asencion Vasquez y Sandoval. Andres is son of Juan Simon Duran and Regina de Aguayo.

You are most welcome!

I have not reached the 1730s yet, as I am still working on 1712. Most of the later films are still off-line. My goal is to work on these until I get to the point where the marriages records and the matrimonial information are in agreement, that is, when they generally both exist, and the information in them is the same. I also intend to post these, also, when complete.

Hi George, actually I do have another Jose Esparza. I have 3 of them!

Maybe you have these guys, the only ones I cant find

Jose de Esparza

Maria Dolores del Rio

married prob married ca. 1700

Jose Diaz de Anda aka Diaz Tiscareno

Jacinta de Ortega y Estrada

married 12 feb 1679, the actual marriage does not list parents maybe in info. matr.

Thanks, again George, your work is gonna help many Aguascalientes researchers.
