Noe...My grandmother Fidela/Fidelia was born about the same time frame as your mother. After reading several films, I found
her..... her name was spelled

may help you locate her.

Esther,

Thank you for the information but the record that you are referring to was submitted by an individual and is not part of the extraction projects of the LDS Church. Thus, it is less reliable unless the submitter has actual source information. These type of records say the following or something similar:

Messages: Record submitted after 1991 by a member of the LDS Church. No additional information is available. Ancestral File may list the same family and the submitter.

All of the historical accounts I read list Miguel Hidalgo as having been born in Corralejo, Guanajuato. Although sometimes what is written in the history books is wrong one cannot prove or disprove a "historical fact" without evidence. I am by no means saying that he was not born where he is purported to having been born. What I am saying is that I would like some proof.

Recently a colleague and I found that the historical information on the parentage of a couple of historical figures was erroneous. Another individual I researched was not born in the locality where they were said to have been born. So, I am still trying to verify the information for the birth and baptismal place of Miguel Hidalgo. If I cannot obtain an actual christening record then collaborative evidence will have to suffice, e.g. marriage documentation, death record, will, etc...

Again, I thank you for the information you provided; but I am a little weary of non-sourced information. I would definitely have to study the the information with caution.

Daniel,

The information is probably right. I just want to verify it. My colleague and I researched about 12 historically famous people in Mexican history and three of the twelve have the wrong information in the history books about whom their parents are or where they were born. Currently I am not able to divulge the information about the individuals, because the investigation is ongoing, and we will more than likely be publishing our findings. What I am saying is that you cannot trust the history books or any published genealogy unless there is factual proof, (source information that is verifiable by anyone).

Does anyone have a copy of the actual christening record for Miguel Gregorio Antonio Ignacio Hidalgo y Costilla? I have been searching for his christening record but have come up empty handed. I am aware of the transcript of about 1829 that is found online but I would like to look at the copy of the original, or if possible eventually the original. Does anyone have a copy or know where I can find one? Unfortunately the Genealogical Society of Utah did not film the dates of his christening. According to the transcript he was baptized in the parish of Cuitzeo de Los Naranjos and born in Corralejo. The Hacienda of Cuitzeo de Los Naranjos became a town in 1851 and the town is now known as Abasolo.

Greetings Grupo,
Recently I've been researching baptismal entries from the mid 1700's in Asientos and Queretero, and in both situations the child's grandparents are never mentioned; not just the particular entries I'm interested in, but in the entire book. Is this something I can expect from that time period or just those locations? It was so nice having the grandparents mentioned in later entries. Thanks so much for your help. Alice BB

Alice, I found the same situation in the same period of time in different places of Jalisco, I am afraid that was the usual registration method at that time. They registered usually the godparents and parents only.

Alessandro, Thank you so much for your response. It's ironic that they often include the parents' address, but not the grandparents' names! Can I expect to see the grandparents mentioned in other regions or time periods, or is the end of the free ride to another generation via baptismal entries? Again, I appreciate your input. Alice BB

Alice, Do not give up. I have found grandparents
in other regions for your time frame. I recall a particular film, that I was told did not list grandparents then, about mid film, the grandparents were listed.

Also, in some cases, I found that the padrinos were the grandparents. And, in some instances, I was able to find the grandparents using the names of the padrinos.

Hi Alice,
Here in Los Altos de Jalisco, I've found that they only started to mention
the grandparents until the very late 1790's and early 1800's. It is rare
when the grandparents were mentioned before these years in this region,
maybe it was a trend that the Catholic Church started to do during this
period for some reason.
What I've had to do when I encounter this situation is to only lookup
marriage records.

Not to worry, I'm not giving up. These twists and turns only forces one to think outside the box, and that's a good thing. However, in my personal family search, I've yet to find padrinos that were grandparents; aunts and uncles, even priests, yes. But if there's one thing I've learned researching genealogy, it's to expect the unexpected! Take and thanks again, Alice BB

Daniel, by the way... I hope you haven't forgotten about the research
information I sent you several months ago and that you promised you were
going to send me some of your research info in exchange. I also hope you
read the emails I sent you since, which I never got a reply from, asking you
where you were on sending me that info and that still I haven't got from
you.
So, can I still count on you to come through with you promise?

Yes! I have not forgotten; I had to scan each page.

What worries me is how to send such a huge file.

Youll have to teach me how to! Other that

give me two weeks max. The College process has

been excruciating. -Daniel

Ive usually only been getting 5 hours of sleep each day. I know this is bad.

I am so glad that you brought up this subject.
since I am involved in working so many lines, I never followed up on the hernando de frias lines. I saw the opinions of jaime holcombe and J. Luis and just left my notes there with their comments. Since you brought the subject up I was forced to look seriously at my notes and the lines that all of you mentioned.
I had not looked at rodrigo de frias line before and did not know of its connection to our other family lines in los altos de jalisco.
Rodrigo de frias is related to the hurtado de mendoza and the fernandez de hijar lines before his descendents intermarried. it wasn't until you told me about his parents that it all clicked.
this information helps further the work that I have all ready done on the rodriguez de hijar.

I strongly believe that rodrigo de frias is the grandfather of hernando de frias just as jaime holcombe claims. I was not forced into an opinion about the competing theories until you claimed the opposite one, that he is his father, and forced me to look stronger at all my data.

When you look at my work, I believe you will concur that he is a grandson and not the son. This is not set in stone but the evidence heavily leans in that direction.
Thanks tocayo

No sé si

the hijar line hooks up with a lot of the same people that the frias lines hooks up with. we actually descend from a first cousin of a pope from both of these lines since that is one of the places where they hook up again. I say one of the places because there are more connections.

both of these lines came from families that were heavily involved in the politics of the kingdoms that eventually make up spain. again, both lines are also connected through maternal lines.

the information that I am gathering on these families and their descendents in los altos de jalisco is the basis for my book on the rodriguez de frias y hijar family.

Both these lines were married into our other ancestors from spain in the 1300's and 1400's

Hi tocayo,

Are you referring to Benedicto XIII, the antipope, Pedro Martinez de Luna?
I also found some info online linking Frias to the Senores de Albornoz, and
these all the way back to 200 AD. Do you already have this info?

I uploaded my FamilyTreeMaker online to Ancestery.com for free. It's great because I can invite anyone to view it and contribute. I upload photos galore, write stories in it and can even upload video, etc.

Ancestry has a sister site called MyFamily that is very much like what you describe below, and it is free. You have to approve who can view your trees, etc, and signing up for passwords by guests viewers is required.

I've become disenchanted with putting my trees on Ancestry because if you leave them as "public" anyone can just pull your information over to their trees, and there is so much corrupted information in their databases now.

As an example, somebody trolling Ancestry pulled all the information on my maternal grandfather, Jose Marquez, all his ancestors, and added them to their tree. I know that the person who did it also had a grandfather by that name in another county in NM, and upon further investigation of her parents, I found a cousin of hers who had the correct information on their Jose Marquez. I have tried to contact the person who pulled my grandfather's information through the Ancestry system, but they do not respond. I have cousins who are diligent researchers who complain that they also have cousins who put up wrong information. Ancestry has been inserting messages on some family members that show all the contradicting information, but novices would just be confused by that.

I know through my local genealogical society that many people have had their information lifted in the same manner. Ancestry's transcribers also lift information and throw it out anywhere in their databases. Complaints to Ancestry go unanswered. We do not appreciate being linked by novice genealogists to people who are not related and do not do their own research. The best thing to do is to keep any trees on Ancestry as "private" so people wanting information have to contact you. If the person who contacts you proves to be a fellow descendant of your ancestors, you can open the tree for viewing just by them as a "guest", or you can just provide only the information relevant to their lines.

Every once in a while I see whole sections of my trees from Ancestry put online without being linked to me, and I suspect that the transcribers at Ancestry have done that in order to get around the "private" trees and make more information available to their subscribers.

Because of all the above, I just have been leaving messages on the message boards and on the genforums for each county and leave a list of the surnames I have researched and in what areas, then they can contact me for information. I just have become leery of sharing trees online, except with Nuestros Ranchos. Novices just find it too easy to find a name similar to their ancestor's and just add that info to their trees without doing any of the tedious research we have done.

Comentario

Eduardo: first, thank you for replaying my message. Second, answering your question, I consider a FACT they got married in Tesistan because the have at least 2 children chritened there, but I have not been able to find such marriage. What I found is other child christened in Zapopan (borbn in El Batan, from which I got Juan V & Dionisia's parents), but such child appears christened in an special book called Bautismos secretos (ilegitimate sons) which means Juan Villarreal & Dionisia Salas were not married. I don't really know if they got married or not, or why their son Agustin was registered in a "Secret Christening book".

If you have information about this family please let me know, I ask for your help. According to the information that I have Juan & Dionisia had 8 children at least (Carmen, Maria, Natividad, Trinidad, Rafaela, Camila del Carmen, Agustin and JUANA who is my ggmother), but as I know, most of them were born in some place in Zacatecas (probably Jalpa). I don't know what to think about this supose born in Zacatecas, not sure, but can be. I jave Juan & Dionisia born abt. 1850 and married abt. 1870, my ggmother Juana Villareal Salas was born in 1877 in Jalpa, Zac. suposely (according to the death certificate).

Do you have information on this family? Beg to GOD you do, you can be my "ray of light" and hope.

Juan V & Dionisia had 2 children christened in Tesistan, I went to Tesistan directly to look for the christening books and they don't have them, the lost them, disappeared. That was very disappointing.

What I think, maybe they got married in Tesistan after they had 8 children, probably arround 1900

Best regards.

Teocaltiche visit

My cousin is visiting Teocaltiche this November.

In Teocaltiche...

In Teocaltiche you will not be allowed to handle the church records, you
will have to submit a list of names and dates that you are interested in.
Personnel there are very courteous and helpful, they will tell you when to
come back to pick up whatever copies of documents you request. Do not
expect to get results the same day you request them, most of the time it
will take a couple of days or longer.

The main Plaza is undergoing some remodeling, and at the present time, most
of the ground covering is being replaced. Lot of construction and
beautification work is under way and it look like all the work might not get
finished for the "11 de Noviembre" fiesta.

Suggest to your cousin a side trip to Santa Ana to visit Santo Toribio
Romo's Church, just outside of Jalostotitlan. Jalos is just about 40 minutes
from Teocaltiche and also about the same distance to San Juan de Los Lagos.
Both side trips are very intersting , enjoyable and doable in one day.

Um, Los Altos is beautiful, he prob wont be able to go everywhere, theres just so much. As to Teocaltiche, visit the local church,

if you have the exact date you can get an official copy of the record which is nice to have. I descend from the same De Soto family of Teocaltiche. They are the first family to have known live in the settlement known as Paso de Soto and to the north in Calvillo there is also another town called Arroyo de Soto. My ancestor Arcadia de Soto came from "a distuingished'' alteno family. Segun su padre don Mateo de Soto had much influence in Teocaltiche and Calvillo where the family owned much land. According to my grandfather don Mateo de Soto lived in a nice house accross the church in the plaza, not sure if the original house still stands? He doesnt know which house exactly his grandfather is a son of dona Arcadia. This is where the Camino Soto family came from; when don Mariano de Camino y Martinez married dona Arcadia de Soto y Frausto. Lagos is very nice!!!! Make sure to have that as a must. One of the most important Spanish families of Teocaltiche would be los Villalobos and
Chaves y Fragoso. The Chaves owned a lot of Teocaltiche not sure if its the hacienda San Marcos? I also descend from this family. If he is interested in more recent ancestors try visiting el Registro Civil. Aguas is about an hour northeast nice place. Try some cheese in Tepa and some bocadillos from San Juan. They prob have something as regards to a festival in Nov in southern Los Altos. I lovethe melecoton from Jalos. Los Altos is the best place in Mejico, the food is great, dancing is fun and remember to have a great time. Hope this helps!!! -Daniel Camino

Bill,

I did wonder while reading your comments. They were really interesting anyway!

Your translation of the 3 baptismal records was very helpful. I had totally missed the comments on the birth date and locations. It makes me wish I had paid closer attention in grade school during Spanish class.

I did find that there is an El Viscaino and Montoro as small towns a few miles NW of Union de San Antonio, Jalisco.

Thanks again for all your efforts. I have a list of microfilm reels to order (one at a time) and hours of viewing ahead of me. I feel like I 'hit the mother lode' when I found this web site.

Mucho gracias,

Montoro, Viscaino and Union de San Antonio were either settlements or barrios within the city of Aguascalientes. There is a Montoro farm in the outskirts of the city where the Montoro family first settled into the area. Jaime Alvarado already gave you a description of this farm. Juan de Montoro is best known as the founder of Aguascalientes, where he settled with his family 434 years ago. The Montoro farm is located about half-way between the International Airport and the center of town. The original farm buildings are gone and the area does not resemble what it must have been in 1575. This area is South of the center of town, not near San José de Gracia. There are several places bearing the name Montoro, including one of the best known avenues in Aguascalientes.

I don't think any of these kids were born out of state. Viscaino is not an uncommon name and could be found anywhere. I suppose it could be a neighborhood or farming area near Aguas, and probably the same can be said about Union de San Antonio. I'll try to find out and let you know.

Hola Sandra,

Mucho gracias,
Evelyn

Angel,

I have a great deal of data on the Duran lines from Nochistlan Zacatecas but unfortunately my research is post the 1700's, I'm not there yet.

I can scroll through my database to see who and what I find that may appear to be relevant.

Angel,

I have some information about the Duran Ruiz de Esparza family from
Nochistlan, beginning with Nicolas Duran Aguayo and Francisca Ruiz de
Esparza, who married in Aguascalientes 05 March 1669. Nicolas Duran
Aguayo was from Nochistlan, and Francisca Ruiz de Esparza from
Aguascalientes. They had at least seven children: Nicolas, Maria, Juana,
Phelipe, Rosa, Juan and Isabel Duran Ruiz de Esparza, all born between 1670
and 1684 in Nochistlán. I know they belong to a different generation, but I
think it would be interesting to tie Manuela Duran Ruiz de Esparza into the
Ruiz de Esparza line from Aguascalientes. Do you know who Manuela's parents
were?

I am not a descendant of Basilio Cervantes Negrete and Manuela Duran Ruiz de
Esparza, but have done some research on the Ruiz de Esparza line. Have you
checked the book "Nochistlán, Zacatecas. Su Parroquia. Los Duran y otras
Familias Antiguas: Estudio Histórico-Genealógico" by Ing. Jesús Durán?
It has some information about the Cervantes Negrete, and a family tree that
includes several generations of descendants of Lazaro Cervantes Negrete and
Antonia Perez de Lomelin, parents of Basilio and Ignacio Cervantes Negrete.

Thanks for the translations Bill, they help a LOT.

I also noticed that Carlos was born in Montoro. From what I can discover, Montoro is located in San Jose de Gracia, Aguascalientes, Mexico. 6 days later he was baptized in Union de San Antonio. His sister, Maria, was born in Viscaino, which appears to be on the Baja penninsula. 3 days later she was baptized in Union de San Antonio. Is it possible that their family was doing that much traveling? Is it possible that Montoro and Viscaino are also names of ranches/farms?

- Evelyn

Comentario

Evelyn,

I don't think that it is very likely that the family traveled that much so
soon after the mother gave birth. According to my mother even as late as
1935 when she was born it was customary for the mother to be bed ridden for
more than a week after the birth of a child. In fact, the mother was usually
not present at the baptism. That being the case I think that Montoro &
Viscaino were probably names of local ranchos.

You are correct, El Vizcaíno is a rancho or hacienda located between La Unión and Lagos de Moreno. This location caught my eye a few years back when looking at a map of the area since my bisabuelo was from Vizcaya, Spain and he moved to Lagos from Spain. Vizcaíno is a term for someone from Vizcaya.

María,

All church records for the State of Aguascalientes have been uploaded the the Family Search Pilot site by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, covering from the year 1616 through 1961. That includes baptisms, confirmations, pre-marital information, marriages, deaths, etc. It is amazing what the mormons have done in this regard in the last 60-70 years, first microfilming and scanning hundredths of thousands of records in churches throughout the world, and more recently uploading them onto their FamilySearch Pilot site. Access is free for anyone researching his or her genealogy. I spent several years checking rolls of film at a local Family History Center here in Dallas, but now all I have to do is seat in front of my computer in the comfort of my own home, and display the same records that are on microfilm. They have NOT been indexed yet, so you need to know the exact date of the event to narrow it down, but if you have patience you can browse the records having only an approximate date. Not all the states are currently available. So far the mormon church has uploaded the states of Aguascalientes, Baja California, Campeche, Chihuahua, Coahuila and Colima, apparently in alphabetical order. At the current pace, it may take several months or years before San Luis Potosi becomes available, but in the meantime you can order the microfilm to find the specific records you want to check. The rental per microfilm is only US $5.50 for an entire month. You don't have to belong to the mormon church to use their Family History Center facilities. Anyone is welcome, regardless of faith or religious preference. And no-one tries to convert you, either.

The link to access the LDS pilot site is as follows:

http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start

Do not fill out anything on the first page. Click "Browse our record collections" near the bottom. The display shows a small map of the world.

Using your mouse, click anywhere on the Canada, USA and Mexico region. A list of 97 available collections will be displayed. Mexico is at the bottom. The first line reads "Mexico Aguascalientes Catholic Church Records 1616-1961". Click on that line. The next page shows a list of feligresias (parishes) : Aguascalientes, Asientos, Calvillo, Jesus Maria and Rincon de Romos. Click on Asientos... etc.

Let me know if you have any problems accessing this site or if you have any questions.

Good luck,

BILL FIGUEROA

I am looking for anything on my family. What caught my eye on this website Nuestros Ranchos was the name "Santiago Saldivar". According to my knowlegde there was 3 brothers that moved to Mexico from Spain or Portugal in the early 1800's. Their names were Richrado (my GGG?grandpa), Felipe and Santiago. I do not have much to go with Felipe or Santiago. I just found a cousin 3 times removed or so. And she had alot more knowlegde. I really nothing to go. My mom did not know any thing that she could tell us. My mom was from Montemorelos NL Mexico. So I thought that the Santiago named on the site would  or could be the same relative I am looking for. I do know that their mom and dad were Juan Saldivar and Maria Apollina Alaniz. And their mom I think was Martin and Patricia De leon.
Please respond no matter what if any information you might have.
