Paul,
I recommend you get this book, "Mexico's Miguel Caldera: The taming of America's first frontier, 1548-1597" to learn about that time--it specifically mentions Tabasco (or Mecatabasco as it was then known)
http://www.amazon.com/Mexicos-Miguel-Caldera-Americas-1548-1597/dp/0816…

Google is also a wonderful starting point to learn about place you haven't come across before.

Tabasco was an important town since the earliest of Spanish colonial days because it was on the Camino Real between Guadalajara and the city of Zacatecas. It was part of the parish of Jalpa then its own parish. Because it was just west of Calvillo, many people from that part of the Jalpa parish would go to Tabasco before 1770; ditto for others in the parish of Jalpa that were geographically closer to Tabasco. So there were plenty of good "reasons" people went to Tabasco.

It's no surprise that many of the towns that are now on highway 54 (which is the original Camino del Real) have origins pre-dating the Spanish (used as migration routes by animals then the various Indian tribes). Some of these towns are Juchipila, Jalpa, Tabasco, and Villanueva. There are many roads that branch off from el Camino Real leading to Aguascalientes, Tlaltenango and Jerez. Again, it all makes sense from a big-picture point of view.

People moved around a lot so I have many connections to the parish in Tabasco as well. Check out my family tree in case you see any familiar names:

Hi Paul,

There is an interesting story behind this place. In colonial times the jurisdiction was called Santa Maria de Mecatabasco which
was also the name for the parish. With the reforms of Benito Juarez the municipio was named Tabasco and the parish still
was named S. Maria de Mecatabasco. For some reason Villa del Refugio was also attached to this place. Have not found
this one yet. But all the records will be under Tabasco, Zacatecas. There was rapid movemento in this area which I call
the long lost zone. People from all over would travel to Tabasco it must have been an important site as far as I have studied.
People from Nochistlan, Juchipila, Tlatenango, Villanueva, Zacatecas, Colotlan, Calvillo, Aguascalientes, Jalpa and Teocaltiche
would travel to Tabasco for whatever reasons. I have many lines going in-and-out of this area. The church records start
1747 so I would assume everyone stayed in their parish.

What do you have on your Ibarra and Salas, we might share lines in this area.

Hi

Melchor Marin and Luisa were indios and servants of the Tiscareño and Marin de Peñalosa families. Both took the names of the families they served. I've seen at least 12 or 13 children attributed to this couple. Bill Figueroa has commented on them in previous posts as a reason to use caution when researching because of the similar names and how easy it is to confuse families that, in this case, have no blood relation to individuals that are using their apellidos.

Chris

Comentario

Thank you, Chris. That is pretty much what I figured out. I found the marriage record for Marcos and Luisa, and also for her parents, Juan Baltasar and Catalina Maria. On both records it states that they are servientes or criados en la Hacienda de los Tiscareño. I just figured exactly what you said, that she used the Tiscareño name - I found her baptismal certificate, but is just for Luisa, india, hija legitima de Juan Baltasar y Maria Catalina. I don't find anything for him other than the marriage record.

Thanks again,
Daniel

Comentario

Luisa tiscareno and Marcos Marin (de Penalosa?) are referred as either mestizos or Indios. Luisa Delgado Tiscareno is espanola.

Francisco Marian de Penalosa (the priest writes the name as such) son of Marcos Marin and Luisa Tiscareno marries a Maria Lopes (might be Maria Esparsa as she is from Padres no Conocidos).

I had written that something was not right but many people add their information which with the double names in same family, and same family giving same name during same timeline makes it difficult to sort them out unless, like you notices what is not right. Making the correction is sometimes tricky on Familysearch because there are many users and there are those who believe their line-up is correct, who don't like the designation Don, Capitan, Alferez, etc...

Now the other problem would be to figure out who the parents of Luis Delgado supposedly born 4 March 1649 though I was unable to locate it on pg 172 where the 4th of march is located though the records are really mixed up in Aguascaliente so there could be another page, but unfornately there is no film number to know if it really does exist. I attached Luisa Delgado Tiscareno (Espanola) image of baptism 1 Dec 1649. So unless they were twins (need to locate birth) they could not be born to the same mother in the same year though he was born in March and she was born in November of 1649 that is 9 mos.

I believe they are who you found them to be married in 1670 and now to find who did Luisa Marry? I left all three in the family with questions hopefully with more information they can be detached.

When I read your post Eddie, I made a search at FamilySearch and found the christening record of José Rafael de la Cruz.

Trying to find the marriage record of his parents I reviewed the records from 1767 going backwards.

The record cought my attention because it was about a Grego-rio (Something) and a Maria Anna Lopes. When I read the full name of the groom in the record I was as surprised as you were.

Have a nice day.

Hello Ed,

Gregorio Antonio de Esparza y Barbosa A.K.A. Gregorio Antonio Barbosa was the son of Onofre José Barbosa and Catarina Banegas. He married Mariana López in Amatlán de Cañas on July 1758. The record of this marriage is the third one of the right hand side page:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-QQ66-X

They had at least two children:

José Rafael de la Cruz christened in Amatlán on 30 Sept 1768

María Josefa Tomasa christened in Cocula on 07 Jan 1783

I hope this information helps in your search.

Hi,

I am descended from Juan Esteban de Esparza and María Luciana Preciado through their daughter María Teodora Trinidad, who was born in the Cocula area in 1798. It seems that "Barbosa" was also part of the family name since Gregorio and Esteban appear as "Gregorio Barbosa" and "Esteban Barbosa" in some records. I found the marriage record of Esteban's parents, Gregorio Antonio de Esparza Barbosa and Mariana López; they were married in Amatlán in July 1758. Here's the link:

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-QQ66-X?mode=g&i=77&wc=M644…

Their firstborn, Ana Ignacia, was born in 1759 and christened "Anna Ygnacia Barbosa Lopes." I haven't found Esteban's baptism record yet, but these other records might give us clues to find it.

I can't believe this info has been sitting here for 6 months. I've been stuck on him for 2 years now and been banging my head for a while now. You're the first person I've found that is related that is also doing research. Don't know how far we are removed by now, but still. What's even more crazy is that you are from Modesto. I was born in Hollister and lived in Los Banos from 1990-2003. My parents and sister are still there. I spent a lot of time in Modesto, specifically cruising Mchenry and going to Rock and bowl in may late teens. Small world.

Curious as to how you found the info on the last name? and what other info you have? You say you came from Estabans daughter Maria Teodora Trinidad. The only 2 daughters I have for them is Maria Ysabel Esparza (1794) and Juana Maria Sebastiana Esparza (1797). And 2 sons Jose Antonio Sebastian Esparza (1792) and Jose Francisco Esparza (1802). I come from the Jose Francisco Line. I'm open to sharing notes and adding your branch to my tree and vice versa.

I had his father's name as Pedro Casillas. This article states that his father's full name is Pedro Martin Casillas.

Dear Alex,

Great find Alex. This Pedro that is being baptized would be a brother to Martin Casillas. A key clue is who they listed as Padrinos. Martin Casillas's mother's father is surnamed Garcia which is the surname of the father of Martin Casillas's nephew. So it looks like the maternal Grandparents may be the padrinos. More research is needed to confirm, but many pieces have been added to the puzzle. if these padrinos are the maternal grandparents, then that would explain the nephew's Sanchez surname as he would get it from his grandmother.

The next step in my research is to find out if there is a connection between Marina Sanchez and the Sanchez/Golluf family of Toribio Hernandez Arellano.

Thank you again,

Rubén,

My paternal family originates in Zamora, Michoacán, it was the "solar novoshispano" of the Méndez de Torres. D. Alonso Hernández Bejarano, "el Viejo" who was married to Da. Ana de Estrada would have been born ca. 1530 so he could be placed as a son, we need more documentation to prove or disprove the link. The record you provided states that Conquistador Alonso Hernández Bejarano;s parents were from La Junciana in the province of Avila in Castilla y León. This is where it seems this family originated from as they have other records in particularly Ejecutorias de Nobleza all from Avila.

Comentario

Many thanks for your comment Daniel.

When reviewing the christening and marriage records of Zamora at FamilySearch I was very surprised due to they are plenty of Méndez de Torres. Now I know why.

Comentario

Daniel,

Considering your in-depth knowledge on the families of Zamora at that time, may I ask you a question?

There is a María de Garibay, the daughter of Juan de Garibay and Micaela de Avalos on the Padron 1680 in Zamora (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939L-8C9S-MP). This is the record:

         Casa de Juo de garibay
                  Juo de garibay
Da Micaela de abalos su mugr
                  Miguel de garibay______
                  Maria de garibay_______
                  Clara de garibay_____

Based on Dispensas and marriage records of her children I found out she got married to Francisco Hernández. Francisco and María were the godparents on a christening record in Santiago Tangamandapio (About 20 Km. from Zamora) on February 1695. The record is the last one in the following image (The date on the record says 1694 by mistake):

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-1Z9X-PZ

They also christened two of their children in Santiago Tangamandapio on 1703 and 1704.

So Francisco and María got married between the years 1681 and 1694 for sure. They should got married in Zamora and later moved to Santiago Tangamandapio.

I have found the marriage records of Zamora up to 29 February 1688 at FamilySearch. But no luck in finding the marriage records after that date. Have you seen these records scrambled inside another FamilySearch film? or do you have any information on Francisco Hernández?

(3) The source for this is a patron-submitted sheet. Until the primary
source is identified, I always am a little skeptical of the veracity of the
data. It looks like the FHL in SLC does not have a film available for
matrimonios in Teocaltiche for the years 1680 to 1728. I wonder where the
individual who submitted the entry below got his information.

Hi Pat,

Yes, it certainly is growing. I added Juana to my database thanks to the
info you provided. My source for Maria is batch #K600711. She is listed as
the daughter of Diego Delgadillo and Petrona de Ysla.

If you look in the same batch you'll find a Catalina, daughter of Luiz
Delgadillo and Josepha de Ysla. This Catalina was christened on 5 May
1672. Catalina/Catarina was often used interchangeably, so it's possible
that source you cited is for Diego's Catarina and not the other Catalina.
That source is a patron submitted record. I have found errors in some of
them, so be careful. I tend to scrutinize those more closely than the
regular extractions done by the volunteers. The person submitting that
record could've mistakenly linked Catarina to the wrong set of parents. We
would need to see the original source to be certain.

Hi Maria,

This is wonderful, but I'm losing track of all our "primas/primos," that
share common ancestry from Diego Delgadillo. Would be nice if a separate
posting/file existed indicating the line of descent for each member that
links with this ancestor.
Thank you for the "heads up," about the patron submitted records on

There is a good chance this is the chiristening record of Pedro:

Event Type: Baptism
Event Date: 25 Feb 1810
Event Place: Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, Teocaltiche, Jalisco, Mexico
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 20 Feb 1810

México, Jalisco, registros parroquiales, 1590-1979, database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:ND1R-5V8 : 28 July 2015), Pedro Nolasco de la Pas, 25 Feb 1810; citing Baptism, Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, Teocaltiche, Jalisco, Mexico, parroquias Católicas Jalisco (Catholic Church parishes, Jalisco); FHL microfilm 634,027.

The records states hijo legitimo by mistake. There are no father or paternal grandparents listed.

Comentario

Thanks so much! That's the best discovery I've had for getting further information on Pedro García.

The birthdate is a bit off from what I found in his marriage record... He was married on 19 November 1834, with his age listed as 22, which would make is birth year 1812 - but it says 1810 here, is it common for the age on the marriage record to be a bit off/an error?

Comentario

Is there any reason a different, new last name (Nolasco) would have popped up here? In all of his children's records he is listed as Pedro Garcia (even hough he was hijo natural) and on the baptism as de La Paz.

Comentario

Thanks for the tips.

I went page by page and found the marriage record for Pedro García and Maria Refugio Aguilera, and found out Pedro was "hijo natural" not "hijo legitimo" of Lorenzo García. Perhaps this is one reason why it's been so difficult to find records?

Thanks!

Hijos Naturals are harder for two main reasons:

1. Usually, baptism records of Hijos Naturals do not list the names of the grandparents, while most baptism records of legitimate children. In some cases, even the father isn't listed.

2. No marriage record. If I child is a Hijo Natural, then there's no marriage record. Marriage records list the name of the bride and groom and where they were born or are living at.

Comentario

Not all of the Teocaltiche church records (baptisms and marriages) have been extracted. You can check which ones by looking up Teocaltiche in the Family Search catalog. If these films cover a critical time period in your research you will need to look at these films page by page. They are, however, all online at Family Search.

Joan (Juan) Angon sailed from Espana to Nuevo Espana on 1606-6-28

So I had the idea of inputting that date on the Pars website and then when the list of people came up, I filtered it on the left "archivo de indias," and I get the list of people that sailed on that date.

So I see list of people that sailed in the fleet of ships with Joan Angon. The first page of the pasajero at very top has the name of the ship starting out as "Nao (name of ship)."

Here is the curious thing. Before I even know who my 7th generation great grandparents are Antonio Madera (1660 - 1709) and Maria De La Candelaria Angon (1655 - 1735). I first looked at the LDS Catholic Church Record Archive of "Cofradias 1633 - 1700" of Huejuquilla back in 1996. I saw the name "Rancho De Juan De Angon." And it stuck with my mind. So then last year something inside me was telling me to save that page of "Rancho De Juan De Angon." year 1633. I saved it.

Then later on I found out who my GGGGGGG Grandparents are and then just found out that my GGGGGGG Grandmother's surname is "Angon."

Additional info: In Sergio Gutierrez's book "Los Altos de Jalisco: Padrones ... " Vol 1, Pg 40

There is a family in Teocaltiche in 1681 living together listed as:

Jose de Castro
.Catalina Lopez
.Juan de Castro
.Geronimo Nunez
.Clara Gomez su mujer

The "López de Castro" family is actually much older than what you have provided here. The supposed compounded name did not originate with this couple, but Capt. D. Juan López de Castro and Da. Ana de Bustos, residents in León, Guanajuato.I descend from their grandson D. Bartolomé López de Castro who married Da. Francisca Maldonado de Saavedra they baptized their only son Bartolomé (ch. 21 August 1675 in Guadalajara).

Do a google search for "free picture editing software." There will be a number of hits, including at least one that will compare different applications. There are also online applications that you may try as well.

Often these applications will have an auto enhance feature. Sometimes these work, sometimes not. Otherwise it is often a trial and error process with contrast and brightness. Inverting the image (producing a negative image) may be helpful.

Hello, I am interested in finding more information on Felipe Lopez (b. abt. 1638) and Francisca Gonzalez (b. abt. 1644).

This is the record for the couple. To get a better picture of the couple I merged records that were waiting to be merged. the Record for Nicolas Lopes who married a gonzales was interesting in that the Padrinos were Salvador Gonzales married to Petronilla Islas (she could be Petronilla Lozano as records, timeline match). How these people fit in the family pic, I don't know but since there has been quite a bit of discussions on the family of Francisco Gonzales cc Magdalena Lavesares who more than likely are related, someone most likely knows.

Your Joseph de Parga y Gayoso would probly be the son of the captain Josph de Parga y Gayoso that was married to Catalina de Ansiso. He's probly the same Captain Joseph de Parga y Gayoso that was also married to Josefa Contreras.

Does anyone know what is happening to guadalajaradispensas.com?

UPDATE: For your information-- The guadalajaradispensas.com website is still down at this time. I have been working with the owner to have it reinstated, but we hit a snag, so it may take some time to work again. The owner assures me that the data itself is safe. I'll announce when it's available.

For those of you offering donations: let me talk to her about it. This time, I paid for it in the interests of helping the genealogical community. It wouldn't hurt my feelings to have some of it reimbursed, but I'll talk to the owner about this offer.

Thanks for being patient!

I would also add to this comment a big thank you and also to ask if you
need funding to keep it going. It's only fair that we could contribute to
keep it going indefinitely.
If we can contribute, just let us know what's needed and I for one am
willing to make a contribution.

To Claudia Casillas and other important owners/contributors at Guadalajara

received an answer. My offer still stands and always will.

Hi

Anyone know where the informaciones matrimoniales for 1724 (oct 1723-jan 1725), Aguascalientes, Asuncion de Maria, can be found?

Denise

I created an index of Aguascalientes matrimonial investigations which covers them through about 1750.

They are often not in chronological order. I do not recall if this specific period was there, but you can down load my indexes from the reference materials area of NR. These are searchable PDF files.

There are many missing investigations.

Family search reposted the films after I posted my first group, so the image numbers are not correct with the current postings.

No se puede acceder a los indices en la sida espanol - pero se puede así, en la sida inglés:

Go to:

select Reference Materiales

select Aguascalientes Matrimonial Investigations.

Hope this helps!
