Avila Huizar

Need help, can't find any info on my great grandfather or anyone before him.  I was told that my great grandfather Alfredo used his mother's maiden name Avila and Huizar - Paternal - Alfredo Avila Huizar from Jerez, Zacatecas. Anyone with info or where to look please do so.  I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi,

In your very first post, you asked for help/assistance of areas to look into.  All I have are suggestions, and a little extra info on the family from border crossing slide 795.

First,

I have no known relationships to this Avila family, which is the family (listed on border crossing slide 795) that appears in the 1930 Chihuahua, Mexico census. This family does not appear to be directly related to your Alfredo born 1903, Jerez), but may be a relation of some type.  First, both Francisco and Josefa were both born in Zacatecas (coincidence?).   They were at this location by at least 1906, as all presumed children were born in Chihuahua. The name Alfredo Avila (born 1923), Chihuahua - coincidence?) may have been named in honor of a close family member, so even though this is not your direct family, it may be a branch relation or hint to follow up on.

1930 Mexico Census - Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico (Note: Both Francisco's were noted as Carpenters.  Not sure of your Alfredo's occupation, although the Juarez area, and across the boarder had several mines nearby that could likely have used Carpenters, not to mention the general area was growing rapidly.

2nd,

Wife Angela Cuevas was 1st married on 29 November 1919 in Tacambaro, San Jeronimo, Michoacan, Mexico to Felipe Padilla (age 20 -born ca 1899 in the parish), son of Cipriano Padilla (deceased) and Antonia Sandoval (living). Angela Cuevas was listed as age 16 (born ca 1903 in Mexico (City), but in the the parish of Tacambaro (since an infant). Angela/Felipe had at least 3 children (Jose born 1920, Amalia, born 1923, and Marina (Martha), born 1925 (all in Tacamaro). I believe they actually resided in Guanajuato. Felipe Padilla died prior to the 1927 birth of Maria Luisa Avila (daughter of Alfredo Avila and Angela Cuevas).  Finding a marriage record for Angela Cuevas/Alfredo Avila could list parentage of Alfredo.
This family appears to have resided in Juarez (Chihuahua, Mexico), Texas, and New Mexico, so perhaps a marriage record exists in these areas.

3rd,

This family does not appear to have stayed long in Jerez, Zacatecas, as there are very few records noted for the Avila/Huisar surname in this area (in this timeframe). There are many Avila/Huisar surnames further south in Colotlan, Jalisco and Huejucar, Jalisco area. This family may have been migrating toward Chihuahua, Mexico and the border, so the areas between Jerez and Chihuahua may be another place to begin looking for possible names that match your family.  In the early 1900's, travel was not fast, and it may have taken months or years for the family to arrive in the Chihuahua area.

Jose Huizar Bañuelos and Francisca de Avila are candidates as parents of Alfredo Avila Huizar.   They for the time frame but I have not found conclusive proof.   They wrote that Alfredo H. Avila crossed with his aunt but forgot to write her name.

Rick,
That lead certainly looks promising.  I find Alfredo and family listed in Juarez, Chihuahua,  El Paso, Texas, Colfax County, New Mexico,
and as far north as Colorado in one record.  Various records indicate up to 10 children. No leads through these records, although I
know there are Catholic parishes not listed on familysearch that are located in El Paso, Texas. Perhaps more info can be found in one
of these El Paso parish records. My interest is with Angela Cueva's first marriage to Felipe Padilla, as I have a number of Padilla
connections through my grandson, who married into the Zermeno family.  I believe this Felipe Padilla may have actually died in
Juarez, Chihuahua in May 1927 (of tuberculosis); but the children of Felipe and Angela were all baptized in Tacambaro, Michoacan,
the last child baptized in 1925. Did Felipe Padilla move the entire family to Juarez, only to die in 1927? Perhaps this is him, although
the civil death record is sketchy, and does not mention Angela?

Yes it does have parental information on the back of the card.   The back of the crossing the border card that you are referring to.   The front of the card says is wife’s name and the back of the card says “Alfredo Avila”traveling with “Mo” which means mother, and “Josefa Macias de Avila.   Then for nearest relative or friend that they are traveling to it says “GrMo Feliciana Medina” who is Alfredo Avila’s maternal grandmother.   And for nearest relative that have where they are coming from it says Francisco Avila who is Alfredo Avila’s father.   It looks like Francisca but it should be a “o” at the end.   To see this back of the card go to that image that you have of the border crossing and then click the right arrow twice and it will take you to this back of the card .

Orosco families in Arandas, Jalisco

I am a descendant of Dr Jeronimo Orosco from Seville, Spain. My 3rd great Grandmother was an Orosco from Arandas. My grandmother has always said she had a close relative that was Jewish, but didn't know exactly who. My grandmother has 5% Jewish DNA.

I was watching a You Tube video on Hacienda San Sebastian and in the beginning of the video, the narrator stated that the owners of this hacienda, who were Oroscos, were Jewish Conversos. I know most of these Orosco families during that time, were related. Does anyone have any confirmation that they were indeed Jewish?

Comentario

I have done much research on the Orosco family in Spain.   And yes they have a Jewish background.   Some of the branches converted but many members of the family kept many of their Jewish traditions.   The trunk of this family was close to the Covarrubias family.  After much research it turned out that the Covarrubias had a similar Jewish background.     Many of the families that were the founding members in Los Altos de Jalisco had a mixture of Jewish ancestors and younger members of noble families.

This is what i thought. My Grandmother, who is no longer here, said she was told they were still practicing Judais secretly of course.  I would love to start researching more. I know many people will say that they were not Jewish, but I'm thinking that they just didn't know they were Conversos. The man in the You Tube video has a lot of historica  knowledg  and artifacts from that particula  area where Hacienda San Sebastian is, started his interview by saying the Oroscos were Jewish converses. I'd love to visit Aranda one day.

Hi, I just saw this post. I have Morillo ancestry from Jerez, Las Tetillas, Zacatecas. My first ancestor with that surname was, according to the record I found, Pablo Alverto Morillo. He was married to Juliana del Carmen Villavicencio. This would have been in the late 1700s. I can trace her families to the founding of Mexico. In my lines there are no spellings with Murillo at all. There is a Pedro Morillo connected with them but at present I don't remember if Pedro is Pablo's brother. Pedro married a Guadalupe Mercado.

Rosalio Onate

I've been a Nuestros Ranchos member for about 18 years.  Any information on my great-grandfather Rosalio Onate b. about 1856 Villa Garcia, Zacatecas, his father Pablo Donate b. about 1824 Agostadero or Asientos, Aguas., and Bernabe Donate b. about 1800, also from Agostadero or Asientos, Aguas. would be greatly appreciated.  I've searched several years with no avail for definitive dates and places of birth.  Thank you all so much,  Alice B Blake

You didn’t give me much to go one as you didn’t provide wives names or why you came up with those dates.
Many people use a mother’s surname or a grandparent’s surname instead of the father’s surname.

Here is a Bernabe Oñate that was born in 1808 :

Jose Antonio “Bernabe” Elizarraras Onate is the son of Jose Cayetano  Elizarraras and Maria Gertrudis De Onate.

Maria Gertrudis De Onate is the daughter on Jose Dionicio Oñate (Doñate) and Maria Estefania Ledesma.

——————++++++++++++++———————————

Jose Cayetano  Elizarraras Is the son of Joseph Joaquin Elizarraras and Maria Ygnacia Gutierrez.

Joseph Joaquin Elizarraras is the son of Pedro Elizarraras and Maria Cruz.

Pedro Elizarraras is the son of Pedro Elizarraras and Maria Simona

RUIZ DE ESPARZA EN SAN LUIS POTOSÍ

Has anyone else noticed that in San Luis Potosi, there was a man named Lope Ruiz de Esparza, living there as early as 7 June 1644? On that date, in the parish of Nra Sra de la Asuncion de Tlaxcalilla, he married Elena de la Cruz, who according to other records, lived in the home of Martin Navarro, on whose rancho and carbonera this couple would live for years, said to be his “criados.”

They had at least 4 children:
1. Josepha Ruiz Cruz, b. 02 Apr 1645, San Luis Potosi
2. Domingo Ruiz Cruz, b. 02 Apr 1646, San Luis Potosi
3. Francisca Ruiz de Esparza, b. 08 Dec 1648, San Luis Potosi, m. Francisco Delgadillo aka Juan Delgado, 7 Jan 1664, San Luis Potosi
4. Pedro Ruiz de Esparza Cruz, b. 27 Aug 1651, Aguascalientes, m. Juana Prieto Gallardo, 20 Oct 1671, San Luis Potosi.

Around August 1676, Elena de la Cruz died, and on 8 Feb 1678, in San Francisco de Pozos SLP, Lope Ruiz married his second wife, Elena de Acosta y Gogorron.

They had at least three children:
1. Maria de Esparza Acosta, b. 24

Happy New Year to all!  Thank you, Manny, for once again and again and again giving us all something interesting to read, to think about and hopefully find more leads to answer the questions we have.  I haven't read any of the links so don't know how Criado was used whether servant or was raised by Martin Navarro.  Come the new year, I will definitely read!

Saludos, Primo

Manny,

You must remember that criado did not mean servant back then.    Criado meant that you served under someone with a higher position.   You could have a high position and still be called criado because you had a boss.

Beatriz Vasquez Retamosa

I am looking for the father of Beatriz Vasquez Retamosa, who married
Juan Rodriguez de Chavarria on 6 March 1618 in Aguascalientes,
through a dispensa I found out Beatriz was daughter of Catalina

Comentario

I hope some of this helps, maybe you'll luck out with a dispensa for
cosanguinidad. Did you find their record of Información Matrimonial? Maybe
the father is listed there, as the one presenting her or the father is
mentioned, or one of his siblings is a witness (testigo), if you cannot find
the father at least you'll be able to continue the line back further through
the sibling. How about testamentos (wills), have you looked at those yet?
You might also like to look at mortgaging and or conveying of water rights
and land. These normally tell from whom individuals aquired the land or
water that they are selling or mortgaging. Well, good luck

You have probably looked at the following records? If not I would take a
look to see if they list Abuelos Paternos/Maternos; it's doubtful for that
time period.

Bueno, buena suerte

This is not the whole Padilla line. I have streamlined it to show the ancestry of Lorenzo Padilla Dávila who is a co-founder of the Villa de Santa Maria de los Lagos Nueva Galicia what is now known as Jalisco Mexico. I stopped the line at Lorenzo’s sons Sancho Padilla Dávila and Diego Padilla Dávila, both of whom are my ancestors many times over. Later I will present I -XIV.

Padilla ancestry of Lorenzo Padilla Dávila ordered by Roman numerals.

With one of his wives, Teresa Diaz, daughter of Juan Diaz, señor de Fromista y Requeña y su esposa, Mencía.

[Some genealogists claim that Pedro López de Padilla is the grandfather or great grandfather of Juan Fernández de Padilla II, but I believe that they have confused the “López de Padilla” line with the “Garcia de Padilla line”.]

(ancestors to many families of Los Altos de Jalisco through their daughter Ana Velasco de Padilla. I posted this line in a thread on “Coria Peralta” ancestry)

I have the Padilla line going further back another five hundred years but there are multiple marriages, and sometimes there is disagreement as to which of the wives is the biological mother. I also found a couple of instances where it seems that a generation is skipped because the father dies at a young age and therefore he is then adopted by his grandfather. When the grandson inherits property from his grandfather which leads people to incorrectly assume that he is his biological father. In one case this May have happened with a great grandfather, passing over his son and grandson, giving the inheritance to his great grandson.

Comentario

The Padilla surname is not from a strictly paternal ancestry.

The line of the men in this family started with Dávila or De Ávila.

1)- Mateo(s) Dávila b. In early 1200’s (based on him receiving property in 1266), ambassador of King Alfonso X “el Sabio”. Mateos was also known as a famous conquistador of Jerez de la Frontera.

2)- Bartolome Martinez Dávila (fought in battle of “1285” defending Jerez de la Frontera) (second owner of “las casas en la Colación de San Salvador de Jerez de La Frontera” that his father received in 1266.).
Bartolome Martinez Dávila married Juana Bernalte Dávila

3)- Juan Bernalte Dávila I was famous for taking the castle of Tempui in 1300, and he was the third owner of the “las casas en la Colación de San Salvador de Jerez de La Frontera”. Juan Bernalte Dávila married Elvira Gutierrez Gatica

4)- Bartolome Martinez Dávila II and Leonor de Padilla. Bartolome had another marriage, but Juan Bernalte de Dávila is the son of Leonor Padilla as stated in a declaration of “hidalguia” of a great grandson.

5)- Juan Bernalte de Dávila II and Leonor Garcia de Sigüenza Though I don’t have much information on this couple, they are identified in a “Carta de hidalguia” of one of their grandsons.

b. 1405 d. 1486, He wrote his testament on 6/October/1486. He married as his first wife Leonor Gutierrez de Padilla y Aguilar d.1470

Garcia “El de la Jura” Dávila received his nickname because on the seventh of October, 1477 he asked King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella to swear that they will respect the regions “fueros” (regional law and authority). From then on he was known as “El de la Jura”.

[Leonor Gutierrez de Padilla y Aguilar Is the daughter of Gutierre de Padilla and Leonor de Aguilar.
Gutierre de Padilla is the son of Pero (Pedro) Lopez de Padilla, Señor de Catalañazar y Coruña, Guarda Mayor del Rey Juan II.
Pero López de Padilla is the son of Juan Fernández de Padilla and Juana Garcia ( aka Fernández ) de Ayala.
Juana Fernández (o Garcia) de Ayala is the daughter of Fernán Pérez de Ayala and Elvira Alvarez Gutierrez de Ceballos]

7)- Lorenzo Padilla Dávila b. ca. 1448, (alcalde de Puerto de Santa Maria) m. 14/June/1492 María Gallegos de Vera. Lorenzo became known for taking part in battles against the Moors in Northern Africa.
The de Vera family descends from a Castilian King and a descendant of Roman royalty.

The next three men in this line married women from Jewish Converso Families.

8)- Hernando de Padilla Dávila b. ca. 1493 and d. ca. 1566. Hernando married in 1515 to Leonor de Machicao y Hervas. (Aka Leonor Ruiz)

Hernando de Padilla Dávila lived a long and colorful life with many careers and activities on both sides of the law. Hernando was a young man he was already wearing a sword when he accidentally bumped into a member of the Duke of Medinaceli’s guard. The man that he bumped into, Fabian Salazar, insulted him and humiliated him in front of all of the guard and the Duke of Medinaceli’s traveling party.
Hernando could not let the humiliation that he endured out of his mind, and when he heard that the Duke of Medinaceli’s party was to pass through on their return to Castilla, he set out for revenge, taking along with him his companion Valderrama as squire, He tracked down, attacked and killed Fabian Salazar. The other members of the Duke of Medinaceli’s guard circled him, and attempted to subdue him, but were unsuccessful as Hernando and Valderrama escaped, although with some injuries. Hernando’s horse also suffered from some injuries that the horse sustained when they had tried to stop Hernando from fleeing. After fleeing for his life, his horse died under him as it gave out from the injuries sustained and the stress of the escape. He had Valderrama skin his horse in order that his family brand not be identified, but he had already been identified and reported as the killer by the other members of the Duke of Medinaceli’s traveling party. Hernando and Valderrama found themselves injured and trapped without a means of escape from those searching for them. It took a long time for their injuries to heal so they bunkered down and hid out. Sancho Padilla, who was an illegitimate son of his father, looked long and far for Hernando until he finally found them and came to their rescue. Sancho Padilla had a strong reputation as a valiant and very capable fighter. Sancho removed Hernando far from the Duke of Medinaceli’s guard’s reach.

Hernando had to live in exile from that day forward as Fabian Salazar’s wife demanded that he suffer consequences for his actions. Hernando, Sancho and Hernando’s squire Valderrama first traveled to Portugal and then Genoa as they ran for their lives and became adventurers They then took to the seas and became pirates. They were successful pirates as Hernando kept getting better and better as a swordsman with each conquest. Hernando gained much notoriety as a pirate.

After the widow of Fabian Salazar died, Hernando’s family asked for forgiveness of Fabians’s family, Hernando gave up pirating and returned to Jerez de la Frontera. Hernando had become an expert swordsman as a pirate and used those talents when he enlisted in the military and became a “Capitan de los Caballos”. In June 1535 he took part in “Jornada de Tunis” where he was involved in a very long sword duel with a Turk, who was also an expert swordsman and faster than Hernando, but not as resourceful. The Turk had finally, after a very long time, overwhelmed Hernando with his speed and had seriously injured him. The Turk was going in for the kill, when Hernando summoned the energy for one last deep thrust with his sword. Hernando emerged with victory as his sword caught the overconfident Turk by surprise. This reminds me of a Star Trek movie scene where Captain James T Kirk is about to die when he makes a comeback by outsmarting his overconfident adversary at the end, even though the adversary is bigger, stronger, and faster.

The emperor Carlos I de España was informed of the sword duel, ordered that Hernando have all the medical care that he needed, and rewarded him the following year, 1536, by inducting him into the order of Santiago, making him Comendador and Caballero veinticuatro de Jerez de la Frontera. The emperor Carlos I de España also made him part of his inner circle of protection, like our secret service.

Hernando de Padilla Davila’s wife, Leonor de Machicao y Hervas, is the daughter of Constanza de Hervas and Hernando Machicao, a conquistador and jewish converso merchant who was very rich. A record of purchases that he made in one year show that his business dealt with large sums of money. Constanza’s
Constanza is the granddaughter of Diego the Hervas who was also a rich Jewish converso merchant.

9)- Lorenzo de Padilla Dávila b. ca 1525 m. Mariana Temiño de Velasco b.August 1543 in Mexico City.
Lorenzo was a “Capitan en Tercios, estuvo en Flandes” that came to Nueva Galicia and was one of the founder of the Villa de Santa Maria de los Lagos, Nueva Galicia.

Mariana Temiño de Velasco is the daughter of Diego Temiño de Velasco and descends from Francisca de Alcocer. Francisca Alcocer is the daughter of Diego de Alcocer and Blanca Nuñez. Both Diego Alcocer and Blanca Nuñez descend from Jewish converso families. Blanca Nuñez has Jewish converso, Muslim converso, and old Christian minor nobility ancestry. Blanca has an ancestor who was a Moor that was King of Valencia that converted to Catholicism. A member of this family became a Pope.

10)- Diego de Padilla Dávila and Ana de la Mota

Ana de la Mota is the daughter of Gaspar de la Mota and Mariana de Vera. Gaspar is the son of Conquistador Francisco de la Mota
Mariana is the daughter of Juan de Vera and ? Medina.
Juan de Vera primarily descends from Jewish conversos. Juan de Vera is the son of Juan De Santiago and Catalina Rivas.
Catalina Rivas is the daughter of Alvaro de Toro and Juana de Vera.
Juan De Santiago is the son of Diego Hernández and Isabel de Cazalla, both of whom have parents, grandparents, and other ancestors that are Jewish conversos that suffered much through the inquisition.

"Padilla descent from King Henry II of England

Gutierre is identified as the brother of Fernando, who is clearly identified as a son of Pedro López de Padilla (Señor de Catalañazar y Coruña, Guarda Mayor del Rey ) and Leonor Sarmiento. The people that list Gutierre’s mother as a “Martinez de Leiva” are confusing this Pedro with his ancestor that is also named Pedro Lopez de Padilla. Blanca has an ancestor who was a Moor that was King of Valencia that converted to Catholicism. A member of this family became a Pope."

Mariana Temiño de Velasco, wife of Lorenzo de Padilla Dávila, was the second daughter of Pedro Pacho and Mariana (or Ana María) Temiño de Velasco, who was the daughter of Diego Temiño de Velasco and Francisca de Alcocer. There are two Marianas Temiño de Velasco, mother and daughter. The mother is the daughter of Diego Temiño de Velasco, and the daughter married Lorenzo de Padilla Dávila.

Do you know the name of Blanca Núñez's Moor ancestor?
Thank you and congratulations.

Thanks Jesus for catching that. You are right that she is the daughter of the Mariana that I had mistakenly written there. I have it correct in my records. I should have checked what I typed before I posted it. I will go through it again to make sure that there aren’t any other mistakes. And yes I do have more information on that family that I will be presenting in my book. I am leaving a few ancestral lines for my book.

Thanks again Jesus,

Comentario

It's my pleasure Rick.
One more question, I have read in several genealogies in Internet that Francisca Alcocer was the daughter of Hernando de Bañuelos and Isabel de Alcocer and that it is Isabel de Alcocer the daughter of Diego de Alcocer and Blanca Núñez, what do you think? Because you skipped Hernando and Isabel in your post and put Francisca as the daughter of Diego and Blanca. What would be the correct thing?
Best regards

Comentario

Thank you Jesus. I will be more careful in writing my post. I will send to your personal email information showing how these lines that you are asking about are descendants of Jewish conversos. I will only send a little information to clarify the lines that you are asking about as I am saving much of that information for the book.

Thanks again, Jesus,

Rick

While re-reading my post, I saw that I had written Diego Temino de Velasco. While this is the name most nuestrosranchos genealogists refer by, in my records I have him as Diego Velasco de Temino with a note that he is also named in records as Diego Velasco de Treviño and Diego Temino de Velasco. His mother’s surname is Velasco and that is the one that he uses. I have posted on other threads how sometimes surname changes come about when a person moves from one area to another.

Dear Erik,
I have had A couple tweaks that I wanted to share with you but you haven’t responded to my emails.

One of the tweaks has to do with a family member of the Ruiz De Esparza family. You named Miguel Esparza in the family tree without the Ruiz surname. Miguel Ruiz De Esparza was related to Lope Ruiz de Esparzas ancestors. They come from the same Ruiz De Esparza family. I have not been able to identify the exact relationship, but Lope Ruiz de Esparza’s great great grandfather was a close cousin of Miguel Ruiz De Esparza.

The second tweak has to do with quote of yours of Mariano Gonzalez Leal. Mariano names an ancestor of ours from our Padilla family as having a surname slightly different than one that I have found in primary sources. I have not publicly identified this difference yet, but I explain the different surname in my book. This surname is not a common surname in Spain. I am still researching the history of this surname.

I believe that the father of Francisco de Reinoso y Neira (Neyla), Alcalde de Bornos, Tarifa y Alcalá de los Gazules en Andalucía is named as Antonio “ el mozo” Reinoso as you wrote in your book explaining that the information comes from a primary source. Another genealogist, Adolfo Salazar Mir, identified Francisco Reinoso y Neira’s sister’s father as not “Antonio Reinoso”, but as “Rodrigo Reynoso”. This identification also came from a primary source, a church record. The thing is that I believe that it may just be an another case of two people reading the same record, with confusion due to the possibility that the cursive writing of these names could look similar causing the confusion. Another reason possibly for the difference in names may be because this church record is a tree where Rodrigo is named as the “bisabuelo paterno materno” and the great granddaughter may have made the mistake. Francisca de Neira was identified as the great grandmother. The question remains, was the name “Antonio Reinoso” or “Rodrigo Reinoso” of our ancestor who is the father of Capitán Francisco de Reynoso y Neira. In order to clear this up, it is necessary that the original church record be re-examined. In the meantime I will identify him in my records as Antonio (Rodrigo) “el Mozo”Reinoso.

I have connected the Reynoso line to my Villaseñor and Fernandez De Velasco lines.

Thanks,
Rick A. Ricci

Dear Rick:

I apologize for the late response, I wrote you about a week ago but is possible that is in the spam folder.
Regarding Rodrigo/Antonio de Mendoza, you are correct about being named also as Rodrigo. I have been trying to figure out his lineage without success, still, I think it is probable that the Mendoza line is related to a Francisco de Mendoza, Mayor of Tarifa and also related to Beatriz de Rivera y Mendoza, wife of Pedro Enríquez, Lord of Tarifa.

Best!

Hi Rick,

I forgot to mention this. There is something that could leads us to figure out which line of the Mendoza we belong to. In the coat of arms of the Reynoso Mendoza the quartier representing the Mendoza line has 5 panelas instead of the arrangement of the COA that we commonly know:

""Sobre verde vi Mendozas / Traer su sanguínea banda / Unos traen diez panelas / Los otros AVE MARIA", refiriendo a las ramas de los descendientes del marqués de Santillana y a los de Juan Hurtado de Mendoza "el limpio""

https://www.uam.es/personal_pdi/ciencias/depaz/mendoza/mescudos.htm

Here is the coat of arms in the Reinoso Mendoza palace:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/03/Palacio_Reinoso_Men…

According to the study, the panelas could belong to the Almazán line of the Mendozas.

What do you think?

Best!

Erik

Comentario

Dear Erik,

The Reynoso Mendoza have at least two lines of descent of Mendoza. It may be three as I see a strong possibility that one line of descent comes from a marriage of Mendoza cousins. If you look at the Escobar de Campos ancestral line that I posted you will see that for “4) Rui Fernandez De Escobar, Señor de Escobar y Campos + hija de uno De los señores de Villagarcia” I did not list the name of the wife. I only wrote that she was “hija de los señores de Villagarcia”. The señores de Villagarcia during this time period are surnamed Mendoza and one of them has a wife that descends from a different branch of the Mendozas.

Here is the Escobar Line that shows that shows descent from the señores de Villagarcia, presumably the Mendozas:

1) Fernan Escobar, Señor De Escobar (1st to use the surname Escobar) + Sancha De Castañeda. Both came from a long line of nobility. Fernan had many family noble surnames to choose from but took as his surname the name of his new title.
2) Rui Fernández de Escobar. Married twice. First marriage to Teresa Cisneros with no succession. He married a second time to Uracca Mayor Rodríguez de Villalobos.

The property “villa de Autillo” originally belonged to the Villalobos family but passed over to the Escobar family when Urraca Mayor Rodriguez De Villalobos married Rui Fernandez de Escobar. Rui and Urraca have two children, Rui Fernandez De Escobar, II Señor de Escobar, and Isabel De Escobar y Villalobos.

Isabel De Escobar y Rodriguez de Villalobos inherits from her mother the villa De Autillo and Rodrigo Fernandez De Escobar inherits an hacienda from his mother and the “casa De Escobar” from his father and becomes Señor de Escobar de Campos (3).

[Isabel Escobar y De Villalobos marries Martin Ruiz De Cisneros (Cifneros) and they are the progenitors of a Cisneros Escobar line. I have not collected more information on this line yet.]

3) Rodrigo Fernández de Escobar ( i Villalobos), Señor de Escobar de Campos + María de Tovar (although he did not inherit the Villa De Autillo from his mother, she did give him an hacienda.)

Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving,
Rick A. Ricci

Comentario

Dear Eric,
There are a few reasons for the confusion of the ancestry of Rodrigo Rodriguez De Escobar. Before I get into the reasons, let me add that during his time period some people named Rodrigo were also called Rui, and their sons sometimes used both surnames Ruiz and Rodriguez. Our Rui/Rodrigo Rodríguez de Escobar, Señor de Campos, was also known as Rodrigo Alvarez De Escobar because his father was named Alvar.

The first reason for the confusion:
The ancestry of Alvar Rodriguez De Escobar, Señor de Escobar de Campos is being confused with the ancestry of his cousin also named Alvar Rodriguez De Escobar that lived in Trujillo. They both had a son named Rodrigo Alvarez De Escobar aka Rui Rodríguez de Escobar.

The second reason is one that Salazar y Castro says that his mothers name is María mtz. Does the record really have mtz or is it Btz? I sometimes have a relatively easy time reading documents that I am researching. At other times I have a hard time trying to read the documents and need to ask others for help when I am not confident that I read it properly. I believe that it is possible that Salazar y Castro misread the will. Salazar y Castro writes that the will has the surname as “mtz “ . He took what he understood to be Mtz to be Martinez when what is written looks like Btz for Beatriz. (María, not Marta, Beatriz Perez Villalobos aka Maria Beatriz Osorio De Villalobos). The surname Martinez does appear as Martinez Leiva with a great grandmother.

A third reason for confusion of the ancestry of Rui/Rodrigo Alvarez De Escobar Señor de Escobar de Campos i Autillo is that although most genealogists place María Beatriz’s parents as Pedro Alvarez Osorio and Maria Fernandez De Villalobos, señora De Villalobos, one secondary source places Maria Beatriz as their granddaughter, with her father being Juan Osorio. More research is needed to find out if she is daughter or granddaughter of Don Pedro.

María Fernández de Villalobos daughter of Fernan Rodriguez De Villalobos, Señor De Villalobos y de Autillo. María inherited the title SeñoraDe Autillo which later was inherited by Rui/Rodrigo Alvarez De Escobar Señor de Escobar y Autillo De Campos. It gets a little entangled up here because of repeated marriages of cousins with similar names. Primary sources are needed here to strengthen the claims of secondary sources.

I have a lot more information on their ancestry, connecting them repeatedly to royal lines. María Beatriz Osorio de Villalobos’s parents were related as well as Maria Beatriz to her husband. The family intermarriages kept Autillo in the family. When the family married into the Reynoso family the endogamy continued as again we find distant cousins marrying for the next few generations in our line that leads to Francisco Reynoso y Rico.

Thank you,
Rick A. Ricci

Dear Erik,

There are two Conde Pedro Alvarez Osorios. Conde Pedro Alvarez Osorio Señor de Villalobos and his great grandfather Conde Pedro Alvarez Osorio Señor de Valderas that are mixed up and combined in secondary sources. Mixing up these two Conde Pedro Alvarez Osorios led to the confusion over the timeline. The second Conde Pedro Alvarez De Osorio even had a son that was also named Pedro Alvarez Osorio. This new information fills in the gap in the timeline that you suspected. This new information also leads to more connections to other ancestors of Los Altos De Jalisco (Los Altos De Villanueva, Nueva Galicia). I am still processing all his new information.

Dear Eric,

In an earlier post, I wrote “In my research I did have a different mother for Rodrigo Rodriguez De Escobar. I didn’t have her as Maria Martinez De Trujillo. I had his mother as Maria Beatriz Osorio De Villalobos. I do have the father as Alvar Rodriguez De Escobar, Señor de Escobar de Campos. I have him as Señor de Escobar de Campos, and as Señor de Autillo de Campos. ”. I looked up my notes and also did more research into Salazar’s claim of a different mother. I believe that my original research notes are correct and I can explain why Salazar y Castro made his mistake as to the name of his mother. I also have many lines of ancestry of Rui Rodriguez De Escobar ( aka Rodrigo Alvarez De Escobar, Señor de Escobar de Campos i Autillo) that connect kings of Castilla, Leon, Portugal, and France. The royal connections did not stop with his ancestors. I have many royal connections to the spouses of his descendants. The Giron, Villalobos, and other Autillo families had many connections, blood and business, with royalty.

I sent you my address through nuestroranchos but I am not sure if the site’s contact button actually works.

Alvaro Rodriguez De Escobar, Señor de Escobar and Maria Beatriz Osorio De Villalobos had a younger son named Diego Hernandez De Escobar who settled in Trujillo. Diego married Mencia de Cáceres y Solis and left a long line of descent in Trujillo, Extremadura. Diego is said to be the first of his family to settle there.

Dear Eric,

I should be, and am, thanking you for your kind words, generosity and encouragement. I am honored and extremely grateful for your offer of a signed copy of your book. Once I read your book, the thought of asking you for a signed copy did cross my mind because I found your book to be a treasure. One of the reasons that your book is an invaluable addition to my library is that it supports and builds on my work that shows that many of the founding families of Nueva Galicia were related before they came over to this side of the Atlantic Ocean. Some were second or third cousins, some of these connections are a century or two before coming over, and in some cases three or four centuries.

I have much respect for your research and am grateful that my comments regarding my notes having the mother of Rodrigo (Rui) Rodriguez De Escobar (aka Rodrigo Señor De Escobar as Maria Beatriz Osorio Villalobos were well received by you. I am not sure if this is the same Rui (Rodrigo) De Escobar, but as you mentioned, the placement of Marta or Maria Martinez as his mother is an awkward fit with what we know about the families and the mark they left in Austillo De Campos. However, Salazar did identify her as María ( o Marta) mtz and did provide that the source was a will. I wonder if Btz should have been written instead of mtz.

Trujillo was not part of the regular surname but a statement of where she was from. As you know, sometimes where a person came from becomes part of a surname. There was a branch of the Escobars from Trujillo so they also had a strong presence there. Looking at the time frame and the family associations that Salazar wrote in his genealogical table, along with the time frame, we can see that we are talking about the same Escobars, but there are a couple of wrinkles like the ownership of the Villa De Autillo that need to be ironed out because the Escobar De Campos side of the family originally did not inherit it as it passed from the Villalobos to the Cisneros Escobar branch first. Somehow the Villa De Autillo came back to Alvaro Rodriguez De Escobar Señor de Escobar de Campos. His son Rodrigo was also sometimes known as Rodrigo Alvarez De Escobar. If we add another generation between Alvaro Rodriguez De Escobar and the Rodrigo Rodriguez De Escobar Señor de Escobar de Campos y Autillo then it would look like this

[The following line is speculation to bring the different Escobar branches together to make sense of #8 having the title of Señor de Escobar de Campos i Autillo and the information given by Salazar.

Rui ( Rodrigo) Rodríguez de Escobar Señor de Escobar de Campos e Autillo
Isabel Ruiz de Escobar + Martin Ruiz de Reinoso

[Reminder
I am taking known pieces of the puzzle and adding them to Salazar’s statement to form the family tree by adding a generation to make sense of the puzzle pieces. An argument can be made that Alvar Rodríguez de Escobar married twice, to María (Marta) Mtz, and to María Beatriz Osorio de Villalobos. The Señor De Autillo comes from María Beatriz Osorio de Villalobos. Her son Rodrigo (Rui) Rodriguez De Escobar gets the Señor de Austillo title from her.

As I mentioned earlier, your book is a wonderful addition to my library as it connects to much of my research into other families. My book(s) connect the line you provided to numerous other lines that I have researched.

Through María ALVAREZ de Barillas y Monroi (en Salamanca), who is married to 5)Fernan Rodríguez de Escobar, we find the blood relationship to Hernan Cortez, Conquistador of Mexico.

The document that you found on Miguel Dalmau states that he was a doctor. He was not a medical doctor, at least not in my records. Miguel Dalmau is a “Doctor en Leyes” and came to live with his family in “Castillo De Villahermosa “ after lending the King of Castilla one thousand “florines de oro.”

Thank you again Eric,

Sincerely,

Dear Erik,

I descend from Francisco Reynoso y Rico five times through three of my grandparents. In my records I had only gone as far back as his parents, so you can see why I am eagerly awaiting your book. In my own research I did find some information connecting the Reynoso’s to the Jewish conversó Herrera family that also comes to Nueva Galicia.

I have also done some research on your Palomar family as I researched the ancestors of Maria Cristina G Palomar y Verea who is a third cousin of your paternal grandmother Bertha Palomar y Aspe. I have done much of Cristina’s family tree for many generations except for her paternal grandmother Genevieve (Genoveva) Loriot who was born in Aug or Sep 1896-1898 in France. I only have Genevieve’s mother as R. Damremoat.

Maria Cristina G Palomar y Verea descends from the Palomar family through both her parents and is more closely related to you through her mother’s Palomar branch of the family. Have you thought about writing a book about your Palomar side of the family? I will have a Chapter about them in my book.

I will let you know when my book comes out.
Thank you,
Rick A. Ricci

Dear Rick:

Thank you so much, I think there are some points about conversos that may also interest you in the book. The merchant Francisco de Reynoso Medina (who belonged to the line of Boadilla de Rioseco and had Villacorta as first last name) requested for his son Fernando de Reynoso Angulo the "hábito" of an order of knighthood however it never proceeded and he was made Alferez of Mexico City instead. I wondered why but a finding of the researcher Jorge Barba Gómez had the answer (Tribunal del Santo Oficio Lisboa, Proc. 7722 09.2.1629): it turns out that the sister of Francisco de Reynoso Medina, Beatriz de Reynoso who was born in 1569 in Viseu, Portugal was condemned as "cristiana nueva acusada de judaísmo" and was sent to jail with her husband Diogo Nunes Neto (2th September, 1626). Following her lineage it turns out that her mother, Luisa Clara de Medina who was born in Viseu may have been jewish.

About the Palomar family, yes, I would love to. Last year I contacted the Real Maestranza de Caballería de Zaragoza because three of the Palomar in the 16th C (Juan Miguel, Miguel and Baltasar de Palomar) belonged to that institution when it was the Cofradía de Caballeros de San Jorge and the interesting part is that they are apparently related to the Lords of Argavieso. I don't know how yet, in the Real Maestranza they told me that there is documentation relating them to the Gil de Gurrea Palomar or Gil de Palomar who at some point were descendants of the "de la Cavallería", a lineage that you have studied extensively. Your book will make my library richer, I look forward to read, learn and enjoy it.

Dear Erik,

Instead of writing my book, I spent much time this summer researching what I had already discovered, looking for pieces to support, or disprove my previous work. I believe that I had a successful summer in that I made many many finds that supported my previous research.

I had felt that I did not make a “big new find” this summer, but there was a giant addition to my family tree thanks to you. The addition of your book to my library has been a wonderful surprise this summer. On second thought, your book was the “big new find” of this summer. I was able to connect your Reynoso research to many of the families that I have been researching in Spain.

Due to the time taken up by my work on other lines, I had not done much research on my Reynoso line. I have, however, done much research on the families that you connect the Reynoso’s to in your book. “Much research” on these families as I also connect them to some of my other ancestors like the Villaseñor, De Tovar, Ruiz De Esparza, and Ramírez Arellano, Lopez De Ayala, among others.

In my research I did have a different mother for Rodrigo Rodriguez De Escobar. I didn’t have her as Maria Martinez De Trujillo. I had his mother as Maria Beatriz Osorio De Villalobos. I do have the father as Alvar Rodriguez De Escobar, Señor de Escobar de Campos. I have him as VI Señor de Escobar de Campos, and as Señor de Autillo de Campos. Autillo was smaller while “De Campos” signified a larger region. I wonder if I have merged two different Alvar Rodriguez De Escobars with sons named Rodrigo Rodriguez De Escobar. But the time frame fits and the associations with other families are the same. I can think of three possibilities for this discrepancy. First, that Alvar Rodríguez de Escobar possibly had two wives. A second possibility would be squeezing in a generation where the Alvar Rodriguez De Escobar married to Maria Beatriz Osorio De Villalobos is father to the Alvar Rodriguez De Escobar married to Maria Martinez De Trujillo. This squeezing in a generation would be a tight fit and is only speculation as there is no other evidence other than that we have two different women as the mother of Alvar Rodriguez de Escobar’s son Rodrigo Rodriguez de Escobar. The third possibility would be that Alvar Rodriguez De Escobar only had María Martinez de Trujillo as a wife and that my records had an error as I had her as Maria Beatriz Osorio De Villalobos.

The ancestry of Alvar Rodriguez De Escobar, Señor de Escobar de Campos, reveals that his great great grandmother is named Elvira Ruiz Cabeza De Vaca which may explain the “Cabeza De Vaca” surname popping up in“Reynoso Cabeza De Vaca”

Your book also brought up a big question that keeps popping up in my research, what is the exact relationship between Juana Garcia De Leyva and Sancho Martinez De Leyva? Is he her grandfather? Or great grandfather? The two things that I found this summer regarding them is that Sancho Martinez De Leyva was illegitimate, but that he was recognized, and that Juana Garcia De Leyva was recognized as a descendant of his. But the exact relationship still eludes me.

My father-in-law also descends twice from Francisco Reynoso Rico, so my daughter descends from Francisco De Reynoso Rico seven times.

The Jewish connection was one that connected the Jewish Herreras to the Padilla Davila. I did not find any Jewish ancestors of Francisco Reynoso y Rico. The Herrera ancestors of the Reynoso were not the Jewish Herreras. The Padilla ancestral branch of the Reynosos in Nueva Galicia were primarily Jewish conversos, some of them converting many years before while others were recent converts. The first person to die in the Americas by order of the inquisition was a Padilla. The Padilla’s have some common ancestors with the Jewish conversó Herrera family that left many descendants in Nueva Galicia. This common ancestor of the Herrera and Padilla was a source of pride for the family as he was very wealthy. Looking at inquisition records revealed that some members of the Reynoso family were tried by the inquisition for “Luteranismo” (Protestants).

I find it very interesting that the Palomar family can be traced to the Cavalleria family. I don’t descend from the Palomar family but would like to dig deeper into this line as my nephew descends from the Palomar family through his mother, Christina.

Thank you again Erik for your book. I just ordered a second copy to give to my Reynoso cousins here in Los Angeles. I may have to order more books as they may get their feelings hurt if I only give a book to one of the cousins. I feel that all of these Reynosos will want your book in their library.

Best wishes,
Rick A. Ricci

Dear Rick:

First of all, thank you for your kind words, your generosity and encouragement. Please grant me something, I would like to send you a signed copy for you. I will write you in private to ask you for an address to send it.
I think your book will mark a milestone in genealogy, it is will be the result of hard work and perseverance. It will be a fine addition to anyone’s library.

I am glad that you brought the line of the Señores de Autillo, the mother of Rodrigo is given by Salazar y Castro and Pellicer de Tovar however their info should be taken with a pinch of salt. The last will of Isabel mentions her grandmother as Marta or María Martínez (without “de Trujillo”, that is a Salazar addition and he doesn’t mention where he got it). It strikes me as odd as they are not a family of the surrounding area as the Osorio de Villalobos that fit well with the families of Tierra de Campos. It is also worth considering that there is still a grey space between Inés Rodríguez de Villalobos and the Lords of Autillo, you probably solved this mystery. I can’t explain why a Marta Martínez is mentioned but it is something that doesn’t fit. I would keep the Beatriz Osorio de Villalobos line as well. The protestant line is also interesting, they were part of the "Alumbrados" and what is curious is that they were related to the Cazallas who may be related to our own Cazallas ancestors by the Vera lineage (I'm not sure in here, merely a hypothesis but would be interesting to connect the bridge between these families).

What you mentioned about the Leyva is very interesting and I think your finding of Sancho is going to be a breakthrough, not only for the genealogy of Nueva Galicia but also for the study of the middle ages.
It is curious how we -the Nueva Galicia descendants- have the same blood but we also have different arrangements in our ancestry. Even though Reynoso is my last name I only have it once on my father’s side and twice on my mother’s side. (On her side: one from Jalostotitlán and one from Guanajuato, a natural son of Diego de Reynoso y Herrera called Rafael Reynoso Cardona) That is much less "Reynoso" than the majority of the Alteños. So you, your wife and your daughter are more Reynoso than I am.

I will send you what I have of the Palomar-de la Cavallería connection, on of those come from the "Gil de Gurrea" which seems the agnatic line of the Palomar which later derived to be "Gil de Palomar" during the 16th century.

By the way, this link has been quite useful to me regarding the lines from Aragón, I don't know if you have used it:

http://dara.aragon.es/opac/doma/index.jsp

In it there are documents that mention the families Caballería/Cavallería, Híjar, Sellán, Dalmau (a finding of yours that has been much interesting) and others.

Best wishes,

Erik

Testamento de Francisco Rodríguez Ponce; indexing Protocolos

Dear Members,

I come to a topic I have proposed that has not gotten much traction: indexing the Protocolos of Guadalajara.  I wanted to give you an example of why I think this would be very worthwhile.  I found the will/testamento of Francisco Rodríguez Ponce from 1660.  I know it has been mentioned before, but from my search of our Forum topics, it does not appear that anyone had seen the actual images or an actual full transcription.  It is a veritable treasure trove for us genealogists!  Below I will include both a partial transcription, and an outline some of the relationships that it details.  It seem to me that he really cared about familial relationships, because he went into a level of detail that I have not seen in other wills, as to  how people are related that are not even in his direct line.  He also often mentioned if the people he was referring to were still living.  Finally, he was extremely  rich.  He received 20,000 pesos in dowry from his mother in law Maria Verdugo

Dear Members,

As I mentioned before, I find it fascinating how much Francisco Rodríguez Ponce focused on how everyone was related, even when as far as we can tell they were not HIS relatives.

He names his father, Francisco Rodriguez Ponce (?-1643) and his mother Francisca de Rentería y Velasco (?-1661), as well as his paternal grandfather, Alonso Rodríguez Ponce (?-?).  He also names his wife, Juana de Avalos y Bocanegra, and his in-laws, Diego de Bocanegra y Cervantes (?-), and the powerful and well-known María Verdugo y Avalos (?-before 1660).  He finally mentions his six children, whom he names specifically, María Verdugo y Ponce, Juana de Avalos, Diego de Bocanegra, Joseph Rodríguez Ponce y Bocanegra, Francisca Rodríguez Ponce y Bocanegra, and Angela de Velasco. They are obviously named for several grandparents or great-grandparents of the same name.

He also names his uncle Miguel de Rentería Muxica, and his two sisters Catalina de Rentería y Ponce (married to Pedro de Vidarte Pardo), and Angela de Rentería y Velasco (married to Fernando de Oñate y Mendoza).

He names the burial place of all the Avalos family in Guachinango, at the Franciscan convent in Guachinango.

Below are some highlights for families of the Autlán and Tecolotlán areas that are of interest to me from Francisco Rodriguez Ponce:

  1. He bough the Hacienda de San Clemente en Tecolotlán from Juan de Ortega Maldonado, was the executor of the will of Juana de Sea, widow of  Hernando Ximénez Caldreón. I have a Juan de Ortega Maldonado having a child with María de Betancur in 1673 in Tecolotlán, Agustín de Ortega y Betancur https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-59S4-BS?i=64&cc=1874591 I am assuming this is likely the same person, but not sure. I also have a Juan de Ortega Maldonado married to Juana Luisa Galindo as parents of María de Ortega y Maldonado, married to Martín Fernández Partida.  This is from Gabriel Agraz García de Alba's "Esbozos Historicos de Tecolotlán," chpt 6.

  2. He notes whom he bought the Hacienda of San Antonio de la Rinconada.  He bought if from Felipe de Mora, married to María Tellez, daughter or Diego Tellez de Herrera and Michaela de Quevedo.  This source helped me confirm that the Telles last name, was Tellez de Herrera, and that the Quevedo family left descendants in Autlán.  I had previously found the will of Andrés Martínez de Quevedo. This opens up the line on question as to whether the Tellez de Herrera and the Tellez de Buedo families were related?

  3.  He bought the estancias of Vistabuena and San Cristóbal from the Alfz. Suero Vázquez de Moscoso and his sister Constanza de Castro y Mesa (who went by the last name of (Híjar y Mesa), and he notes that they were children of Cap. Lorenzo de Castro y Mesa and Costanza de Moscoso, and siblings of Gregorio de Castro y Mesa.  I had previously confirmed this with the will of Costansa de Híjar y Mesa, but this gives another primary source verification that Alfz. Suero Vázquez de Moscoso, was the son of of Lorenzo de Castro y Mesa and Costanza de Moscoso.  Here is Costanza de Híjár y Mesa's will for reference. I previously posted it on NR. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSD2-Y95J-C?i=244&cat=130231

Anyways, I hope you all find this helpful, and might be able to help disentangle some fo the 17th century families y Nueva Galicia where we have spotty church records.

    Regards,

    Sergio Sean Salés

Given how long the will, is, I think I will post the relationships in a later post.

Hi all,

I just took another look at my file on Diego Rentería Mujica and I wrote a note that his parents are named in the meritos of the chantre Diego Flores de la Torre. I am not sure if I meant the one held at the Bancroft Special Collections at UCB or the one that was posted on another thread here, and available on PARES:

http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/24573

I can check back through my poor quality photos of the Bancroft version and see if that's where I saw it. I have a vague memory that it was in a section where Diego was listing his relatives toward the end of the meritos. However, this only solves the problem in part, given the possibility Diego could have been mistaken. But at any rate, it is a relatively good bet that they were his parents.

Hope this helps for now, but will post again when I find more.

Richard,

Thank you so much for posting. This is a great lead as it helps confirm some of my prior research, but I hope you can still help clarify the mystery around the parents of Diego de Rentería. Would you please clarify where you found the parents of Diego Rentería Mujica, as I have not been able to find them. Let me explain. I have only been able to access the link you included (I have not been able to see the Bancroft Collection): http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/24573

Reading the post I followed the Pares link:

Indiferente General/MERITOS: Diego Flores de la Torre
Fecha: 1674-7-16

From the post, it seems genealogy starts on image 77 and from what I have been able to tell, there are three images of genealogy, Imges 77 thru 79. Image #78 Reads:

This information is relevant because it shows Sancho de Rentería married to Doña Ángela de Figueroa (Also known as Ángela de Velasco, just like her mother). It shows they had a Daughter named Francisca de Rentería who married Francisco Rodriguez Ponze. This information is great, as it confirms much of the information I have already found (Please see below for documentary references I have compiled over time). Unfortunately I have not found any references to Diego de Renteria Mujica, who would have been brother to this Francisca de Renteria (Married to Francisco Rodriguez Ponze). In the documentary references below it seems our Diego de Rentería had at least three siblings: Francisca de Rentería Sancho de Rentería and Miguel de Rentería.

As a comment, there are another two leads, but one of them has a mistake:

Lead #1 - Book "Fundadores de Nueva Galicia - Tomo I,by Guillermo Garmendia Leal, Page 95, it reads that a child of Angela Flores-Figueroa Married to Sancho de Rentería is: Diego de Rentería Married to Merenciana Arias. (Note: Merenciana is mispelled in this reference, should read Emerenciana)

As you can see, there is disagreement between who the parents are of Diego de Renteria y Mujica (Married to Emerenciana Arias). That said Richard, would you please clarify where you found the parents of Diego Rentería Mujica, as I have not been able to find them.

Saludos Luis,

Thank you so much for sharing all of these other leads!

First, I went back to my images from the Bancroft microfilm, which seems to have much of the same things from the meritos on PARES but perhaps a bit extra. For example, it has a section where Diego Flores de la Torre presents "Los Quatro Grados de Parientes de este Linaje". I am not sure if I am permitted to post my images according to the agreement I signed many years ago with Berkeley special collections in order to take these images, but if you email me at richrocks92@gmail.com I will happily provide you with the three images that have the list of parientes.

The lists are very sparse and some inference is required to place descendants with their respective ancestors. Under tercer grado he lists simply "hijos de Sancho de Renteria", which is not incredibly helpful since it does not give their names.

This is not definitive, but given that we know (as you posted) that Sancho de Renteria cc Angela de Velasco had a daughter Francisca cc Francisco Rodriguez Ponce. We also know, thanks that Francisco Rodriguez Ponce and Francisca Renteria had a son, Francisco Rodriguez Ponce, and a daughter Catalina married to Pedro Vidarte. We can thus assume that the D. Nicolas Sarmiento that follows in Diego Flores de la Torre's list was their cousin.

It seems likely to me that this Nicolas Sarmiento is the Nicolas baptized in Guadalajara in 1620, the son of Diego de Renteria and Isabel Sarmiento. If this is correct, this would place Diego as one of the unnamed "hijos de Sancho Renteria" in the tercer grado section. I think this may have been what I was referring to in my notes, though I see now it is not as definitive as we might like.

Also, some additional questions:

Do you know if Isabel Sarmiento Palomino cc Diego de Renteria in 1619 Guadalajara was married before? The marriage record does not state it, but I found an Isabel Sarmiento, viuda of Andres Arias Martinez Holguin, in the protocolos of Guadalajara in 1618 settling a dispute with her father-in-law over inheritance she was owed from her late husband.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939L-73SJ-B?wc=3JFF-N36%3A1…

This is interesting, given that it would provide yet another link for this family to the Arias de Abellas. It also suggests Juan Arias de Abella was not done with his shadiness when it came to inheritances...

Lastly, a Diego de Renteria Moxica vecino of Juchipila also shows up in the Guadalajara protocolos in 1654. This could be the one married to Isabel Sarmiento, though it might also be his proposed son. He signed his name:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939L-73SJ-B?wc=3JFF-N36%3A1…

I have some further questions about the Aspirantes source, but I will need to read up on my notes again. Do you happen to have a link readily available to the originals in the inquisition films on familysearch? Since the limpieza is for Juan de Renteria and not his son Sancho, what source do we have to connect them?

I hope this is helpful and thank you again for sharing your notes!

Richard,

I wanted to respond today to let you know that I have read your response. Thank you too for your notes! I will be working on a more meaningful response to your questions this weekend, but for now I wanted to post a few comments:

1) Although I acknowledge some of this is inference, I also agree with you in that it is likely that the "D. Nicolas Sarmiento" that you say is mentioned in the "Los Quatro Grados de Parientes de este Linaje" of the "Meritos of Diego Flores" is indeed the same Nicolas baptized in Guadalajara in 1620 (son of Diego de Renteria and Isabel Sarmiento). This is likely given that his Mother "Isabel Sarmiento" bears his surname. Agreed this is not conclusive at this point, but man, that's pretty darn close! If I recall correctly, there is another Nicolás which would be of the same 4th Generation, but I don't believe he is associated with the Sarmientos. I will check my notes.

2) Regarding your question about Inquisition Links, I don't know if you were referring to any of them in particular but I can share these:

https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/31792?availability=Family%2…

The Link above is the inquisition links available for México. If you scroll down to where the hyperlinks start, you will notice that the first three links are for Indexes. They are quite a bit of "Procesos" so the Indexes are vital. The rest of the Indexes are for the actual "Procesos Inquisitoriales."

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSD2-CK9V?i=87&cat=317…

The link above will take you the Proceso of Diego Flores, which is relevant to this discussion. In it, there is a reference to Sancho de Rentería, who testifies on his behalf. In this Proceso, Sancho de Rentería states that one of his Sons (Sancho de Rentería) is married to one of the Daughter's (Angela de Velasco) of Diego Flores

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSD2-H9RX-5?i=786&cat=…

The link above is for the Limpieza de Sangre de Juan de Rentería, supposed father of Sancho de Rentería. I will look through my notes to see where I established the relationship between these two.

Thank you again Richard, and to all in this forum; please continue to contribute. If anything, this Forum Topic could serve to compile available sources for "Los Renterías."

Hello Sus and Forum Members,

I am also investigating this family line and I wanted to ask you and others in this Forum if you have any luck finding additional information on Sancho de Rentería Married to Ángela de Velasco. I am trying to find evidence that Diego de Rentería y Mújica (married to Isabel Sarmiento), is the son of Sancho de Rentería and Ángela de Velasco. So far, I have found several references in family trees and publications on the internet where they show that this is the case, but none offer a source. If anyone in this group can share a source that shows that Diego de Rentería y Mújica (married to Isabel Sarmiento), is the son of Sancho de Rentería and Ángela de Velasco, I would really appreciate it. If you don't have the source but could point me in the right direction, that would be helpful as well.

I wanted to share a link, that may be useful to you Sus. It is regarding a "Limpieza de Sangre" for Juan de Rentería, the father of Sancho de Rentería. These "Limpiezas de Sangre" were basically genealogical studies whose purpose was to prove that the individual in question were pure "Old Christians" who didn't have recent Muslim or Jewish Ancestry. The link below, shows a reference to the book: "Aspirantes americanos a cargos del Santo Oficio: sus genealogías ascendentes. Fernández de Recas, Guillermo. 1956. Ed. Porrúa." In the bottom right hand corner of the page, you will see the entry for Juan de Rentería. It shows a brief description of the record. This reference points to the original record at the "Archivo General de la Nación," in México City. If you visited the ""Archivo General de la Nación" you can read the Limpieza de Sangre with the following info: Año de 1572, Tomo 65, Expediente 3.

Dear Luis,

I was wondering if you were able to find any documentation to link Diego with his supposed parents? I am also looking into some lines descending from him and would love to be able to verify if they are indeed his parents.

Thank in advance,

Jorge,

I'm sorry, I haven't made much progress on documentary evidence of Diego's parents. I hit a brick wall on this several months ago and was hoping this group could help. I am still hopeful someone in this group could help with some clues. For now, I'm still looking and if you are also looking, perhaps we can post weekly or monthly updates regularly, whether we have found anything or not. Would you like to share where you have searched so far or if you have any leads? I'd be happy to share my thoughts as well.

Respectful shout out to this group to see if anyone has any documentary evidence that the parents of Diego de Renteria Mujica were Angela de Velasco and Sancho de Rentería. Thank you all.

Luis

I see that there is a lot of speculation about whether Diego de Rentería, husband of Isabel Sarmiento, is the son of Sancho de Rentería and Ángela Flores de Velasco. I have several considerations to make in this regard:
1) Chantre Diego Flores de la Torre, in his document kept in The Bancroft Collection, says that:
“The aforementioned Diego Flores de la Torre (not to be confused with the Chantre, this is his grandfather) and Doña Ángela had another daughter named Ángela, who married Sancho de Rentería, a Creole from the Guachinango mines, brother of the Illustrious Don Juan de Rentería, who he was bishop of Cáceres in the Philippines; Because I am the nephew of his brother, he had me at his house and table in Mexico, and for this benefit I have him photographed in my house. Sancho de Rentería had three children: Sancho, married to Águeda del Río, they had a daughter, Doña Ángela married Juan del Campo de la Torre, noble and important people; the other son, Diego de Rentería, married Doña Emerenciana, sister of Isabel, the aforementioned wife of Diego Flores; They had six daughters, one married Francisco de Reynoso, one of those already named; the other married Joseph de Medrano, a Creole from Guadalajara; the other married Melchor González de Hermosillo, from Jalostotiltán.”
Although there are errors in his document, he cannot be wrong about this, since the Chantre was a first cousin of Diego de Rentería.

2) There are some sources (such as the book Los Padilla de Ávila by Jorge Palomino) that say that Emerenciana's husband was the son of Isabel de Sarmiento and her Diego de Rentería. This is impossible, because first, there is no source that says that this marriage had a son Diego (there is only a record of a son Nicolás de Sarmiento, born in 1620) and secondly, in 1623, Emerenciana was already a maiden, who was godmother at a baptism together with her sister Isabel. She was perhaps very young, probably 10 or 12 years old, while Diego de Rentería and Isabel de Sarmiento were married in 1619, so a son of them could not have married Emerenciana.
3) According to my calculations, it is likely that Diego de Rentería, the son of Sancho and Ángela, and husband of Emerenciana, was about 18 years older than Emerenciana. He was probably born around 1592 and Emerenciana around 1610. In this case, it could be possible that Diego had married Isabel before, that he was widowed and in the late 1620s or early 1630s, married Emerenciana. However, there is no evidence.
4) Isabel de Sarmiento and Isabel Palomino are the same person and she was previously married to an uncle of Emerenciana (brother of her father Juan de Arias y Valdés) named Andrés Arias y Valdés, with whom she had a son, Juan, in 1610, and who died in 1611. Apparently the boy died soon after. All this can be verified in a document about a lawsuit between Isabel and her father-in-law, don Juan Arias y Valdés (Emerenciana's grandfather), dated 1618 and found in this link. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C9BN-99J9-X?cat=35680
My hypothesis is, since some say that Diego de Rentería, the son of Sancho de Rentería and Ángela Flores de Velasco, was the husband of Isabel Sarmiento, and others say (among them the Chantre) that he was the husband of Emerenciana Arias de Orozco, that he was the husband of both; in 1619 he married Isabel and already a widower, perhaps in his late 20s, he married Emerenciana.

I have four people named Sancho De Rentería that lived in the 1500’s and early 1600’s in Nueva Galicia.

The Sancho Rentería that is the son of Juan Renteria and Juana Pereira is not my ancestor.

The other three “Sancho De Rentería” listed here are my ancestors.

1). Sancho de Rentería is the son, or son=in -law, of : Hernando Mujica, “contador de Guadalajara” and “Francisca Porres Baranda y Temiño de la Mota. “ I do not have a wife for this Sancho. Sancho’s son:

2).Sancho de Rentería Mujica (Moxica, Mohica) and Angela Velasco (De la Torre). I Repeat the fact that this Sancho has grandparents named Hernando Mujica, “contador de Guadalajara” and “Francisca Porres Baranda y Temiño de la Mota. [It is unknown to me whether they are his paternal or maternal grandparents.]. Sancho and Angela’s son:

3)Capitán Sancho de Rentería y Velasco and Águeda Del Río y Losa (Águeda descends from both Gines Vasquez De Mercado who is honored every year in Spain for his generosity, and Bernardo Vasquez De Tapia, well known people during their lifetimes.)

Hello,

According to several trees online Capitan Sancho de Renteria cc Agueda del Rio de la Loza is the son of Sancho de Renteria cc Angela Velasco.

The problem is that I can't find any source to make this connection. Does anyone know how to link these two Sanchos?

I have now some informacion about Sancho de Renteria father (cc Angela Velasco), but first I need to make the connection with the son.

thanks

I've never seen a direct source for this either, but Sancho and Agueda had a daughter named Angela de Velasco cc Juan del Campo de la Torre. Their daughter (my ancestor) Juana de la Torre cc Miguel de Olague uses most of the surnames from the female sides of her family - Gamboa, del Rio, Mojica, and Velasco.

I don't have the link to Agueda del Rio's will, but if you haven't seen it she names her daughter there

So yeah, with the Chantre document in the Bancroft, the Agueda will and the inquisition process against Diego it's confirmed that:
Angela de Velasco and Diego Flores de la Torre are the parents of Angela Velasco who married Sancho de Renteria (son of the Sancho who was a witness in Diego's process) and they in turn are parents of the third Sancho who married Agueda del Rio. (Then there's a fourth Sancho de Renteria and maybe also a fifth, but I personally haven't studied them yet.)

Hi Sus,

I was tracking Francisca de Renteria, hija de Sancho Renteria Mojica cc Angela de Velasco, since I have an ancestor with that same name, and I wanted to see if there was any connection. Here’s Francisca’s burial:

Her sister was Maria de Renteria cc Francisco Palomino Rendon Narvaez. I have the Renteria’s originating in Lepe, Huelva, Spain, though I don’t know where I got that.

Here’s a link to the protocolos de Guadalajara.

Hi Sus and Manny,

I can't be of much help, but I have also been looking into this family. I have seen a few different sources that might offer some clues. First, I think that there were at least 3 Sancho Renterias living in Nueva Galicia in the 16th century. There is one who is the son of Juan de Renteria, alcalde mayor of Zacatecas cc. Elvira de Pereira y Rivera, who died as a child in 1565. Second there is Sancho de Renteria the alcalde mayor of Mexticacan who was born around 1534. Third, is the Sancho de Rentería Mujica who was teniente de alcalde in Juchipila cc. Angela de Velasco Flores de la Torre and son of the previous Sancho.

The three separate Sancho's are clarified most by information in the book La Inquisición en la Nueva Galicia, specifically in two separate trials. If you search Renteria you will find the relevant sections: https://archive.org/stream/lainquisicionenl00vill/lainquisicionenl00vil…

In the trial for Diego Flores de la Torre a witness is Sancho de Renteria, alcalde mayor of Mexticacan, about 60 yo, who said his son was married to a daughter of Diego's (i.e. Sancho Renteria Mujica cc Angela Velasco). There is also a witchcraft trial involving a Sancho Renteria who dies as a child in 1565. He is the son of Juan de Renteria alcalde mayor of Zacatecas cc Elvira Pereira daughter of Diego de Rivera.

In the AGI via PARES searching "Renteria" you can also find an información de oficio y parte for Juan de Renteria cc. hija de Diego de Rivera un the section for the Audiencia de México.

As a side note, in the Indiferente General section there is a lisencia for Juan de Renteria canónigo of iglesia de Valladolid, Michoacán. I believe he later became the bishop of Caceres in the Philippines and was cited as an illustrious relative for the canon Diego Flores de la Torre in the limpieza that is held in the Bancroft Library at UCB.

Lastly, the book Poder Religión y Sociedad en Guadalajara has a tree of the Rodriguez Ponce family that does not correctly identify Francisca de Renterias mother, but it does raise the question of the relationship of the Renterias with Hernando de Mujica the contador of Guadalajara who married Francisca the daughter of Diego Porres Baranda and Catalina Temiño de la Mota.

https://books.openedition.org/cemca/3310

If anyone has any further information about these Sancho's or the Mujica family's connection for the Renterias I would be grateful. Hope this helps a bit too!

I descend from Sancho de Renteria the alcalde mayor Mexticacan. I have him in my records as the son of Hernando de Moxica, the contador of Guadalajara. I don’t have a source added to the information so I don’t know where this information came from. I would appreciate any additional information that you can provide on him. I don’t have Hernando Moxica’s wife or Sancho’s mother listed in my records

    Interesting Baptism Name

This is a new one for me. Has anyone ever seen where a name that is traditionally a last name is actually made to be part of a 1st name? I found the baptism record for my 5th great grandfather. On most records he is listed as Juan Hernandez or Juan Antonio Hernandez. His parents were Cristobal Hernandez and Maria de la Encarnacion Vallin (or Ballin). On his baptism record his first name is listed as "Juan Jose Antonio Bautista". Bautista is not his last name. So his whle name at baptism would be Juan Jose Antonio Bautista Hernandez Vallin.

Attached is the document. Just wondered if anyone had thoughts on this? Maybe his name was inspired by someone somewhat notible/of important historic reference at the time?

I believe this Domingo Mejia is most likely the one who is the son of Lorenzo Mejia and Ines de Estrada. If it is, then does anyone know who this Francisca de la Ascencion is?

Origin of the Araiza y Medina family (one step closer)

    Dear Members,

I received an email today from Michael Araiza, that spurred me to revisit the Araiza-Medina line.  He sent me the link to a marriage between Hernando de Arayze (yes, with an “e”) and María de Gusman in 1592, inquiring if it might fit the timeline for the marriage of Fernando de Araiza and María de Guzmán, parents of Juan de Araiza y Medina (d. 1665).  My answer is long, but the short answer, is yes, I do indeed think if fits the timeline.

The main problem with this document is that it took place in Mexico City, and we had not previously had any link of the Araizas to Mexico City.  So, I started doing some research.  PARES yielded nothing, sadly.  However, in familysearch and in my own document repository I found a couple things that may help make the connection.

I found the marriage of a Josephe de Arayça to Juana Martínez in 1623, and it turns out, he

    Mr. Sales,

I agree with you that this marriage record fits the time line of the Araiza Y Medina Line.  Great information from it!!

The marriage does indicate that Hernando Arayze and Maria Guzman are "Vecinos" of the city . Juan De Araiza's Testament says they were Vecinos of Zacatecas .(probably later)

In the past, we did talk about the 1739 ordination investigation of Gabriel Araiza in comparison to the 1664 Testament of Juan De Araiza Y Medina. The will stating they are "Vecinos" of Zacatecas, and the Investigation stating that Juan De Araiza Y Medina was born in  "Un Lugar en La Vizcay en los Reinos de Castilla".

Could the ordination investigation be wrong? Could it be possible that Juan de Araiza already have been born at the time of the marriage in 1592?

Also noted in the marriage is a 'Joan De Medina"  , I wonder what relation this person had to Hernando and could this person be the contributor to the Araiza Y Medina surname?

    Great Stuff!!!

My maternal line has stopped with a woman named Nicolasa Carrillo de Sandi, married to Jose Juarez Delgadillo, my 9th great-grandparents. I don’t have an information on their births or marriage, my guess is that they are located in/around Cuquío, Jalisco.

I have arrived to her through my 8th great-grandmother Juana Gertrudis Juarez Carrillo, but I have little information for her.

I do have the marriage of Juana Gertrudis Juarez Carrillo, and Juan Manuel Delgado Pacheco (son of Francisco Delgado Lopez and Rosa Maria Pacheco Nuñez) on 5 June 1724, although much is lost to the large decay on the pages: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-F4YV-9?i=132

It’s possible that Nicolasa Carrillo was also from Nochistlan, there were various branches of the Carrillo de Sandi living in that area. But I see no record of Joseph and Nicolasa marrying there. There were various branches of the Carrillo de Sandi in Teocaltiche and a couple in Aguascalientes, so check those communities, too. If they married in Teocaltiche, then you’ll be out of luck, since the marriage books are missing for the years they would’ve married.

    Hello Everyone,

My name is Laura Villa and I am oringinally from Los Angeles County, California. My grandparents families come from Zacatecas. I have been working on gathering information, documents, and photos for over 15 years for our tree. I would be happy to share any information I have, and I would also love to connect with any relatives!

His parents were Margarito VILLA (born in 1881 in Juchipila son of Bruno Villa and Bernarda Perez) and his wife Maria ORTIZ (born in 1886 in Tabasco, Zac., daughter of Calixto Ortiz and Virginia Lara). Margarito and his wife moved back and forth between Mexico and California.

I don’t think Pedro Montellano, who was married to Ana Maria de los Santos Castorena, and Pedro Montejano Argote, who married Guadalupe Cirila Camarillo, are the same person. For one thing, though similar, the surnames are different and have different origins.

For them to be the same person, he’d have to have been married first to Ana Maria de los Santos, before 1786, when their daughter Gertrudis was born; according to his marriage information, Pedro Montejano Argote was born around 1780 on Rancho del Maguey and had been living on Rancho de la Jaula, both in the jurisdiction of Pinos. He was 17 and had never been married, nor had he lived anywhere else. So he couldn’t have been the same person who was married to Ana Maria de los Santos. Also, according to their marriage records, Pedro Montellano’s children were mestizos, and their mother, Ana Maria de los Santos, was spanish (white), so Pedro was mixed race, for his children to be mestizos. Pedro Montejano Argote was spanish.

So, I don’t think your Montellano’s descend from the Montejano’s of Pinos/Ojuelos. When researching families in Ojocaliente, I’ve had luck searching in Asientos and Calvillo, Aguascalientes - have you tried those places? Doing a general search on FamilySearch, I see both Montellano’s and Castorena’s showing up there.

When did your Pedro Jose and Jose Maria live, and who were they married to? I haven’t seen Montellano nor Monteyano in Pinos nor Ojuelos, but I have seen Montejano. Most of the families with that surname  living in Pinos during the 1700’s descend from Phelipe Antonio Ramirez Montejano and Paula Francisca Lopez de Avila, who petitioned marriage on 24 Jun 1729 in Pinos. He was born in Mexico City around 1705, son of Antonio Ramirez Montejano and Juana de Torres, and she was daughter of Juan de Avila and Juana de Trujillo. They had about 7 children, born between 1730 and 1750, who ended up living in Pinos, Ojuelos and in San Felipe, Gto. This family originally used the compound surname Ramirez Montejano, but most of their children dropped the “Ramirez” and went with “Montejano.”

I hope you find this useful!

    Gracias for your swift response,

According to the information I gathered, Pedro Jose Montellano "Argote" was married to Ana-Maria De Los Santos Castorena OR Guadalupe Cirila Cmarrillo in Los Pinos in 1797. However lived or spent time in Ojocaliente, Veta Grande, Guadalupe Zacatecas?

Simon Montellano (son of Pedro) (DOB 1792) married to Bruna Perea Perez (1812) in Palmillas zacatecas

Jose Maria Montellano - Perez (1809-1894) and married to Ponciana Martinez .Jose Maria Montellano - Grand Son of Pedro Montellano & Son of Simon,

I did find what you shared in regard to Phelipe (1705) & Paula Francisca De Avila. There is also a Joseph Joachin Montejano (1735) Villa De Reyes, San Luis Potosi married to Juana Ygnacia Argote (1720-1810) who appears to be the parents of Pedro Jose "Montellano" (DOB approx. 1750-60)

Very interesting how last names were dropped, so assuming that Ramirez was paternal and Montejano was maternal? My confusion is the spelling of the surname of Montellano which are in later archives vs the earlier archives using Montejano.
