1700's and 1800's Adoptive Children

Reading thru church marriage records from the 1700's and 1800's, I find myself wondering who could of adopted children that had no parents.

One of my female ancestors was described as a "hija de padres no conocidos" in her marriage record (partida matrimonial), but in her marriage information (información matrimonial) she was described as a "hija natural (según dicen) de..."; both daughter and mother bore the same surname. I do believe that some children of "padres no conocidos" were, in fact, natural children who deliberately concealed the identities of their parents.

i don't really know. i wonder if in some case of hijo(o/a) adoptiv(o/a) the child didn't know who their actual parents were(i think that's the case for some who are labeled as padres no conocido also, but padres no conocidos can also refer to 'natural' children.)

also last names weren't always passed down in a consistant manner. for example, on person on my tree didn't get either parent's last name, and instead got his last name derived from the place he grew up at.

Comentario

Based on what I've seen on numerous records I can assume that adoption wasn't based on any set of rules per say,(although they exist) and thus the situations behind each case would vary. Closer relatives would be more likely to take kids as their own, now taking a kid didn't mean they were always considered adopted, I think the adoption was "official" when there was some inheritance at stake, but definitely not a rule either.

Taking on a specific surname is not uncommon, even by biological sons/daughters specially among big Spanish families we see often kids making their own "set" of last names, now in your ancestor's case it seems like he could be in fact his adoptive mother relative and thus he used her last name but again, this is not a rule and could easily be that he just was too close to her.

Official adoption is usually not seen too often, but once we read many records we can see that there were many families that "house in" relatives at the point they were considered part of them, and in many cases the true identity behind them is unknown, I wouldn't consider adoption unusual but poorly recorded.

As for records, well they were not really systematic, many information was "loosely" recorded and many things important for us now were left out, some records would barely say anything of the adoptions. Also some kids would be adopted regardless of their parents been actually dead, (like natural or illegitimate) kids, all of this would not appear on records and one have to play detective in order to find more about it. Therefore, even if the records don't mention some aspects it doesn't mean they didn't happen, and the older the manuscripts the more discrepancies we encounter unfortunately.

Hope it helps a little.

Interesting, thanks for the input RJ. Any feed back helps me think outside of the box.

Are there other sources available that I can use to research, property, names of people, deeds (escrituras), ranchos, pueblos, and HACIENDAS?

Comentario

Its always good to outsource a little when discerning about the past, I spend many hours on little details that a the end where just the lack of standardized manuscripts, things like "why they didn't mention this or that" "why this person appears with other names" etc. It was until I start reading records in general, not just the ones I was interested in, that I got a wider idea of the conditions of writings of old days, some times little details do matter though.

I am confined to only the internet, don't really know much about other sources, thus FamilySearch is mostly my only source, but I have used PARES and the Biblioteca Publica del estado de Jalisco also has an index for many civil records, some date back before Mexico's Independence. Amaya Topete's works are also a good source (if you can consult any of them), and many other are also cited here in this page.

Adopted or hijos de padres no conocidos or hijo natural are terms that I, like most genealogists, hate to find in my research for it often leads to a dead end in the family tree. Though I still don't like finding these terms, they are not always dead ends and more research sometimes reveals the parents names. I had a few, what I had thought to be, dead ends that ended up being just a bump in the road and I was able to eventually find out the identity of at least one of the parents. This is where it pays off to research siblings and their descendants hoping that their records bring light to what is often hidden on purpose.

I have found this data in all sorts of records so look at all the ones you can find. A siblings marriage certificate revealed the father in one case. Both siblings had originally listed as padre desconocido but subsequent records revealed the father of the sibling. Another record revealed that they had the same father. The baptismal records of two siblings, one before and one after revealed clues that were used to uncover a families secret. Marriage dispensations have repeatedly revealed a previously unknown father (this one occurs often).

Atentamente,
Su primo Paco,
Steven Francisco Hernández Gamiño y López de los Reyes

I have found that after you enlarge an area of the document that you are
looking at, you can print just that area by using the print function icon
that shows up on the application tool bar. This works for me with
FamilySearch. If I try and print the same area by clicking on Control-P,
the entire page will print, rather than the area I want. Hope this helps.

Alice,

You have to save the whole image (meaning both pages of the book in the image) then use the "crop" function on the print function in your computer. It used to be so easy, now it takes more steps.

Hi Emilie,
I'm afraid I'm going to have to have someone more computer savvy look into this.  At this time, when I try to print the whole image, I wind up with 3 pages.  One page has site text and the other two print only the upper half of each page.  One image number provides viewing of both pages of the church book.  Do I have to zoom out each page to fill the screen, first before printing?   Thanks so much,  Alice

Hi Alice,

No don't try to print the whole image. What I meant was that when you are looking at the image that has the entry you want to print, right click on the image and save it as a .jpg file. It will save both pages of the book on the image. Then go into your computer where your saved photos end up, open the saved photo and use the printing application on your computer. They all have a "crop" option. You open the photo and use the menu at the top to get to the options to crop the photo to the section of the image you want.

I wasn't able to use the "paint" function of my Windows Picture Viewer, but the Microsoft Office Picture Manager has a crop function that is easy for me to use---when I open the photo, at the top is a menu and I click on "picture", and it brings up a drop down menu and one of the choices is 'crop'. I click on that and then it shows the whole image with brackets on every corner. Move the brackets to enclose the entry you want to print, then click on "print". Later it will ask if you want to save the cropped image. I don't save it after I print it.

Hope this helps,

Emilie

Rosalva, I can't see the attachment mentioned in the "Books and Articles" section for this book, I wonder if it is just me (my browser), but I can see the description and also other attachments in other titles. Would you be so kind to let me know? Thank you very much for your time.

Thank You Rosalva,

If you come across any mention of the European origins of the Duran and Aguayo Familes that settled in Nochistlan in early 1600's that would be great.

I am specifically interested in Juan Simon Duran born around 1604 and his wife Regina de Aguayo born around 1607. All their children were born in Nochistlan in the early 1600's.

I alson noticed you have Duran in your user name, I wonder if we are related.

Thank You

Hi Ruben,

We might just be related! I am searching for my Duran family roots as we speak! Being fairly new to this, I'm enjoying it quite a bit. Currently, I've hit a road block. I'm looking for a marriage record for Jose Florencio Duran and Maria Marselina Rodriguez, my 4x great grand parents. I've found a birth record for one of their children but no marriage record. They are listed as the paternal grand parents on some of their son's, Jose Atilano Duran Rodriguez (born 1782 in Tlachichila, spouse: Maria Juana Marques) children's baptism records.

Any names sound familiar?

Regards,

Rosalva

Comentario

I found a marriage record for a Joseph Florensio Duran and Maria Magdalena Rodriguez. You can look at the link, record on bottom of page. This may be same record you are looking for. It does not mention Florensio's parents so I could not make a match to my tree. I will keep looking.

On rootsweb.com under family trees my database is rojasdelgado. You can see more Duran members there from my tree.

I also sent you a link of other names you mentioned.
Good Luck
Ruben

According to Clotilde Evelia Quirarte on page 110, referring to the colonial period in Nochistlan, there were 12 founding families with the surnames of Sandoval, Ruvalcaba, Ruiz, Frias, Mejia, Duran and Chavez, these are just some of the 12 families and this would be according to the author, Arrequi in the book he wrote sometime around 1619. He states that Juchipila, Jalpa and Mexticacan were primarily indian communities with 4-6 Spanish families in each of the towns and he highlights that during that same time, Nochistlan had about 12 founding Spanish families.

The parish archives begin in 1622 with the visit of Fray Francisco de Rivera. It's not until 1627 that several Spanish surnames can be found in the archives of the baptismal records such as Don Gaspar de Casareal y Ulloa, Juan de Sandoval, Juan Pèrez Delgadillo, Juan de Chàvez, Juan de Carvajal, Juan Rodriguez, Carvajal, Juan Iñiguez, Domingo Lomeli and Carlos de Lomeli.

Alicia Avelar Olmos de Carrillo
Some of the first baptismal records from Nochistlan have the following surnames, Ximenez, Guzman, Fernàndez, Ledesma, Juan y Alejandro Duràn, Ana Ruiz, Ana Duràn, Ana de Aguayo, Julio de Irungaray, Julio y Lorenzo Yañez, Matheo de Rovalcava, Gertrudis de Amaràs. Also the surnames of Mendoza, Martinez, Garcia, de Torres, Pèrez de la Mora, Mexia, Ramirez, Lozano, de Vargas and Muñoz. Beginning in 1660 we found Luis Lemos Benavides, Antonio de Legaspi, Josè de Orozco and Tomasa de Nungaray. In 1672 we see the death of Juan Rodriguez de Frias who died at the age of 80 and soon thereafter, the death of Juan Duràn who was more than 80 years old, he was the owner of an "Hacienda"
I hope this helps some of you with ancestors from Nochistlan.

Hi there Rosalva, thanks for offering this opportunity, that is a book I always wanted to see but have no copies close to where I live. I wonder if there is and index within the book that can tell us the contents (then I would either keep pursuing it or just leave it along) I'm mostly interested in the "Rodriguez de Santa Ana" "Lozano" and "Quirarte (Quiralta or Quiralte)", I am pretty sure the Lozanos are going to be there but I don't know about the other two surnames. Thanks for any info you may find, and enjoy it for us :D

RJ Quiralta

Comentario

RJ,

Good idea. I'll scan the index if the book has one.

Does anyone know how I can upload it or attach it to a message for everyone to see while I'm still there? I will have a flash drive for scanned copies.

Rosalva

Comentario

Rosalva, may be the space in this website for "Books and Articles" under the "Files" tab can be a good place to attach any information you may want to share, there all people can use it as a reference, then we can just link it in this topic. Thank you.

Hi Rosalva,

If you find any mention of the Ariza y Medina family that would be awesome!

With the help of others here on Nuestros Ranchos we have traced the origin of the family to early 1600s Zacatecas with the patriarchs being Fernando de Araiza and María de Guzmán, parents of Juan de Araiza y Medina I, whose will we found in Aguascalientes.

You are better off downloading the image and then using image software to crop and print what you need; you should also be able to optimize the image (adjust brightness and contrast, for example). The downloaded image will have greater resolution.

I guess you're saying it isn't possible to do it directly from the familysearch document page you happen to be on. They've changed the format several times
and I guess that feature was lost.
Thank you for the clarification.

Typical programs on computers like
"Snipit", "Printscreen", etc. should be able to capture
pieces or all of the information you are seeing on the

Matlacohuatl, Chiconquiauhtzin, Tezcapoctzin, Tehuehuactzin,
Micacalcatl, Xiuhtlatonac, Acolhuatzin.
Se aplica a: Sr. Acolhuatzin.
46. Huehue Tezozomoctli (Principe de Tenochtitlan)
Se aplica a: Sr. Tezozomoc.
integraban y creaban nuevas ciudades.

We've stayed there and it's absolutely beautiful. In colonial times it was
a hotel for people and their horses, you could stable your horse and stay
in the upper room.

Thanks for replying Alicia and glad that you found Zacatecas Centro beautiful colonial style. I have stayed in the house of my woman's mom's house since they are one of the dowtown people. Before I met my woman, who is from dowtown city of Zacatecas, I would stay mostly in our village of Huejuquilla 2 - 3 hours away in the rural highlands near Hacienda San Mateo (50KM away from Hacienda San Mateo). I ventured out and met my woman in the City of Zacatecas. Probably felt what the Conde felt like to travel the same route to the City of Zacatecas.

In downtown City of Zacatecas, we usually take a short cut through the City Block by crossing through Meson Del Jobito since it is pretty big with alleys. You come out the other side of the block. I love it! The colonial style

Hola Edgar,

Muchisimas gracias por tu desinteresada ayuda. Yo tambien me puse a
encontraste me ayuda mucho.

Is this the same Sebastian Merino b. ~1636 in Aguascalientes?

Hola a todos,

Thanks Austin for your response!

Yes, I think you are right. After posting my post, I realized that Sebastian de Arenas (Merino) and Thomasa Rodriguez couldn't be the same Sebastian Merino and Thomasa de la Cruz (parents of Sebastian de Arenas (El Joven) and my ancestor Rosa Maria de Arenas). I concluded this by checking the dates. Sebastian Merino and Thomasa Rodriguez married in 1689, while Rosa Maria de Arenas married around the mid to late 1690s. If Rosa Maria was indeed daughter of this Sebastian Merino and Thomasa Rodriguez, then Rosa Maria would be really young to marry (less than ten years).

So now, I concluded that both Rosa Maria de Arenas and Sebastian de Arenas (married to Thomasa Rodriguez) were siblings, their parents were Sebastian Merino (the older) and Tomasa de la Cruz, like stated in the burial records. What initially confused me was that Sebastian de Arenas' wife was also named Thomasa like Sebastian and Rosa Meria's mother Thomasa de la Cruz.

This makes me think that Sebastian Merino (the Older) had an affair with Thomasa de la Cruz, and they were never married since Thomasa is not stated as a previous wife on his testament. But they both had children. Both Sebastian and Rosa Maria (my ancestor) are classified as mulattos, meaning that Thomasa de la Cruz, their mother, was either a black freed/slave or mulatta. Maybe that is the reason why Sebastian de Arenas is said to be hijo natural in Sebastian Merino's testament because his mother was a slave or mulatta and was not recognized (that is my assumption, not sure how it actually worked).

Also, what does "hijo exposito" mean? Does it mean the child was an orphan? I am asking this because when Sebastian de Arenas married Thomasa Rodriguez, Sebastian is said to be hijo exposito. But then there is consanguidad between Thomasa Rodriguez and Sebastian de Arenas (Merino).

Here is a bit of what the dispensa states:

If Sebastian was indeed a "hijo exposito," how did they know Tomasa Rodriguez and Sebastian were related.

Thanks Austin!

Hi Roberto,

Hijo exposito refers to an abandoned child. From reading other dispensas it seems common that an "hijo exposito" or "hijo de padres no concidos" keeps that label even if claimed by one or both parents. And this would seem to be true for Sebastian's dispensa with Tomasa Rodriguez, where he is listed as hijo exposito and later states to know who his father is. The fact that he knows the identity of his father is consistent with Sebastian Merino's (son of Bernabe's) testamento where he acknowledges his hijos naturales. It is unfortunate though that in the dispensa Sebastian does not provide the name of his father or the cousin who had the affair wih Tomasa.

After reading the dispensa that you provided, another possible theory is that there are 3 generations of Sebastians: Sebastian(1) Merino, espanol, hijo legitimo de Bernabe Merino, Sebastian(2) de Arenas, mestizo, hijo natural de Sebastian(1) Merino and Sebastian(3) Arenas, mulato, hijo legitimo of Sebastian(2)de Arenas and Tomasa de la Cruz (aka Rodriguez). You have a good point that Rosa Maria de Arenas could not have been the daughter of Sebastian(2) based on the facts that Sebastian(2) and Tomasa married in 1689 and Rosa Maria married some time in the 1690's. Unless Rosa Maria was one of Sebastian(2)and Tomasa's four children that were born prior to their marriage. Tomasa's declaration in the dispensa states:

If Rosa Maria was the eldest child then that would put her age around 18 years old when she married. This is just a theory, hopefully we can find supporting records to make the connections for your Sebastian and my Bartolome.

Buena suerte!

Hello Roberto,

I have the following information for Sebastian Merino son of Bernabe Merino and Maria Gutierrez:

Sebastián Merino (February 1636 - ? ) m. Juana del Castillo m. María de Jaén m. Nicolasa Ruiz de Esparza

1. María Merino, daughter of Juana del Castillo ( ? - September 21, 1694) m. January 28, 1691 in Aguascalientes to Antonio Núñez
a. María Antonia Núñez (December 1692 - May 1, 1742) m. May 8, 1709 in Aguascalientes to Domingo de Medina

2. Nicolás Merino, hijo natural, m. March 20, 1695 in Aguascalientes to Antonia Montaño (aka Burgos)
a. María Merino ( ? - November 7, 1738) m. Cayetano Arias
b. Juana Merino de Burgos ( ? - July 16, 1710) m. Martín Monreal
c. Antonia de Burgos m. Lorenzo Calvillo
d. José Manuel Merino (March 27, 1695 - ? )
e. Nicolás Merino, hijo natural, (July 1698 - ? )

3. Sebastin de Arenas, hijo natural. This Sebastian maybe the one who was married to Tomasa Rodriguez?

My Merino/Arenas ancestry is from Bartolome Merino who married Bernabela de Esqueda on June 14, 1704 in Aguascalientes. I have their children as Damaso, Francisca Teresa, Roman and Francisco Tadeo (my 7th Great Grandfather). A connection between Bartolome and your Sebstian de Arenas is found in Roman's baptism record, where Sebastian and Tomasa Rodriguez are listed as godparents.

"Roman, mestizo, hijo legitimo

I'll be sure to pass on any new information that I find.

Hasta pronto.

That's what I thought it was, but someone found another entry in the same batch where it was clearly written as Aposolco. We were close.
