Hi Sylvia!

Neutla and San Juan de la Vega are towns just outside Comonfort, Gto. The closest major town
in that area are Salamanca, Celaya and Santiago de Queretaro. These towns your looking for
are just north of Celaya.

San Juan Bautista is the parrish or the church of the town San Juan de la Vega,
this town is also near Celaya. There all within distance of Celaya, which is a

I've received a few emails about the registration form. If you emailed me your request from July, August, or September, I emailed you from NGGSConference at yahoo dot com. I attached the registration form and an informational flyer.

However, sometimes email programs place emails containing files from an unknown source in the SPAM folder, so please check there to see if it was misplaced. Otherwise, you can contact me through the Nuestros Ranchos contact form, which is under a different email address, and I'll send it to you individually.

Thank you Rosalinda,

Maybe some people like me have replied and indicated they intend on coming but
won't really know if we can make it or not until a couple of months before the
event. With children and family there are always unexpected events.

If we send the money and for some reason cannot attend, will we get a refund?

Thanks,

Hi Alice,
In this issue of Somos Primos they have an article named "The Descendents of Don Pedro de Almandos" where they show:
ANA-MARIA CANTU-DEL-RIO-Y-DE-LA-CERDA, b. 25 Feb 1772, Nuestra Sra de Guadalupe, Salinas Victoria, Nuevo Leon, Mexico
.. as the daughter of JOSEPH-JOAQUIN CANTU-DEL-RIO-Y-DE-LA-CERDA and MARIA-MANUELA DE ALMANDOZ, so her name would match the one you found.
http://www.somosprimos.com/sp2007/spmar07/spmar07.htm

You can use this information as a good template and try to confirm all the connections with actual documents.

I would take these long surnames found in so many genealogies with a grain of salt. Certainly in Mexico we use two surnames instead of one (the first surname of the father and the first surname of the mother, in that order), however it seems to me that was not always the case, especially in Northeastern Mexico. After reading hundreds of documents, I realized that most people in NE Mexico only used ONE surname throughout their life, unlike people in central Mexico were it was more common to use the second surname as well. I guess the use of TWO surnames in the whole country became standardized during the 20th century when they started to ask for both surnames when filling information in official documents.
Also many people had multiple-word-surnames (de la Garza Falcon; Gonzalez Hermosillo; Rodriguez de Montemayor) but their descendants would only use a short version (Garza, Gonzalez, Rodriguez).
Unfortunately, while compiling the names of our Mexican ancestors, a lot of us give them two surnames as in our current custom without having any document showing whether they actually used both of them. And if their parents had multiple-word-surnames we end up with names with 3-4 surnames, which the person may had never actually used.
However, the second surname is very useful in genealogy to distinguish between persons since you can have several individuals in one family with the same name and first surname (children, cousins, uncles). I would suggest to write down the second surname between [brackets] unless you find documents showing that the persons indeed used the second surnames during their life.

Hello Victoriano,
Good to hear from you!  Thank you for the information.  You're right; the multiple surname is both a blessing and causes confusion at the same time.   FYI:  The entry does read "Juaquin Cantu del Rio y la Zerda" and on another he's simply Joaquin Cantu.  You never know!
Thanks again for all your help.   Alice

Alice,
The surnames you mentioned are more commonly found in Coahuila (Saltillo)-Nuevo Leon (Monterrey) region. My database includes those surnames for that region, although not those individuals. You may want to visit Raul Longoria's very impressive database for that region at: http://www.raullongoria.net/Genealogy/FamilyTree/index.html.

In addition, you may want to visit the following link: http://genealogia-mexico.blogspot.com/2010/06/re-genealogia-de-mexico-2…
the su rnames Garza Falcon y Tixerina, and Cantu Rio y Serda y Almandos appear linked in the same time line as yours.

hola, Daniel,

Muchas Gracias.

It's confusing, because I usually try to figure out which is the maternal surname.  I wasn't sure which if any were combined and considered one surname.  Thanks so much.  Alice

I find the Beta site is not very user friendly.....but hold on to your hats because I was told by a church member that they will be eventually be moving the records again to a final site. She also is having problems with records not being at the Beta site when they were at the Pilot site. Just send a feed back response with your concern. Also it helps when requesting missing records to go the the library catalog for the location in Jalisco and Zacatecas and copy and paste the catalog information with the missing towns and records. I have done this in the past and got a response with the records being added within a month...maybe I was just lucky.

I'm feeling your frustration too.

Hi Linda,
I don't think they will put them back on the PILOT website, they will put them in the BETA website instead.
You can ask them to load the images you want in the BETA site through their FEEDBACK link, mentioning they were available on PILOT. Chances are they are going to respond that they are in the process of moving images from one set of servers to another so some images are currently unavailable, and that they expect the transfer to take another few weeks so keep checking back.
Regarding the collections they upload to beta.familysearch.org I heard they do give priority to the collections people are asking for through this feedback, so it may be a good idea for everybody to ask for the collections from the Zacatecas, Jalisco and Aguascalientes towns and parishes currently missing.
Good luck!

Emilie, I went to the pilot program and at the top is says beta programs. then
it says search for ancestors, click on the Canada, U.S.A and Mexico. then scroll
down to Mexico Catholic church records "brows images" is to the right.  then the
next one says view images in this collection, brows through 12xxxxxxx images..
when you do this the states in Mexico will come up, click the one you want and
the actual records for each city will appear.. hope this helps.. by the way, I
had to hold down control because my software didn't want me to see beta...

hope this helps.

In the colonial period it was customary for the dead were buried in churches inside and around in the the atrium, the better economic position, they could dock to a place near the main altar. The poor were buried in the atrium, and the jews, excommunicated and anyone considered outside of the religion were buried outside of the "sacred ground" to the "raw land"

When applied the "Leyes de Reforma"(issued in 1855-1860 mainly by Benito Juarez, Ignacio Comonfort, and Sebastian Lerdo de Tejada) were removed to the church several powers, including control of cemeteries, and from there went to the cemeteries listed by the civil authorities.

Hi,

When I was at our village of Huejuquilla, Jalisco, Mexico. I went over to the current cemetary to find my grandparents and great grandparents.

But I also walked around looking at the dates to see which are the oldest. The oldest ones in the current cemetary date back to the early 1900's.

Then I thought about my ancestors that I found in the archives dating in the 1700's and wondered where could that old cemetary be located at?

So I asked family and friends in our village and other people about whether there was another cemetary where people from the 1700's were buried.

I was told that their is another place where there was another older cemetary. But they turned it into a Rodeo Arena and it is near a school.

How to bring up Search on Beta?

I found the Search page for Mexico baptisms, and I try to complete the fields, but the courser doesn't appear to allow me to do so. What am I doing wrong?

Hi Emilie,
I would try with different internet browsers (Explorer, Chrome, Firefox, Safari). Seems to be working for me.
Otherwise search in the main page and once you get your hits, within the sidebar just choose the ones for Mexico, baptisms.
Good luck!

Thank you, Victoriano,

I finally found the word "Beta" in small blue letters, and when I clicked on that, then it opened up and I was able to complete the Search fields. I tried the one for Mexico, Baptisms and I got some hits, but they are in a long continuous string that isn't sorted by locality. I got to page 16 or so, then I got tired of looking for my person because it was bringing up everybody from all the states. I will play with it some more.

Thanks again,

Modern Name

Does anyone know the modern name for 18th century Villa/Valle de Carrizal, Nuevo Leon?  I've tried several sources and have come up empty.  Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank so much

According to these official webpages, Valle del Carrizal would be today's Cienega de Flores:

Thank you so much for your help.  I had also heard and read of
Cienega de Flores and didn't know they were the same place!  I'm going to have to be patient, because I don't currently see either listed
on the pilot site for church records of Nuevo Leon.   At least now thanks to your help, I'll know what to look for.   Alice

Hi Alice,
It seems that the Familysearch team did not microflm the church records for Cienega de Flores. In their Family History Library Catalog they only have the 1930 census and the 1863-1930 civil records, which are not available online yet. Don't look for them anymore in the Pilot.familysearch site since it seems they won't update that database anymore. All the updates will go to the Beta.familysearch.org website, around the beginning of each month or so.
If you are in Monterrey, Mexico, they may have microfilms for the church records at the ITESM library.

Hi Alice,
ITESM is a private university with campi or campuses all over Mexico, but the main one is in Monterrey. It is the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education. They have a collection of microfilms with records from Nuevo Leon and Coahuila (very little from Moterrey, though), including some not found in the FamylySearch collection.
I am checking in beta.familysearch the church records from Salinas Victoria, NL: Matrimonios 1755-1835
On image #2 the title says: ARCHIVO DE LA PARROQUIA DE SALINAS Y CIENEGA DE FLORES.
So it seems that the church records from Cienega de Flores are mixed with the ones from Salinas; both towns shared their records in the same book, and it is online.
Bye!

Rose what kind of extraction for Aguascalientes, Im currently working on two books I plan to author sometime next year.
One will be extractions for 17th century of Aguascalientes and a lengthy analytical monograph and the other book
is about my maternal family Perez de Camino. So much to work. Im almost done with extractions, well sort of around
half way but much work is still needed. Im with Fondo de Cultura Economica in Mexico for both books. I'll let everyone
know when they are published and ready to sell its supposed to be a big hit in Mexico, we'll see about that, maybe
the Aguascalientes but my Perez de Camino is more personal using all the records in our Archivo Familiar that span over
500 years of family history and catholic church and colonial government records to assist me, basically a huge "monografia
genealogica"

Back to work.....

As far as the digitized records are concerned it is actually better since
each collection now has it's own URL making it easier to point someone to
it. The URL for all of the records for Mexico is
https://beta.familysearch.org/s/collection/list#page=1&countryId=1927078
As far as searching I agree because I search for someone and I put place of
birth and place of death as Mexico and they give me results for Costa Rica.
They obviously have a lot of tweaking to do.

Esther, I also found it less user friendly.....I informed my cousin of that fact as he has tendency to get frustrated easily.

Good luck on your work Daniel. I've worked on various extractions, most not published. It is time consuming work....especially the editing....

Armando, I'm glad that the sites have their own URL....I hadn't noticed that...I was just glad I found the records...but yes, it is helpful when instructing someone as to the location of the records.

Happy researching everyone!
