Marriage record: Hernando de Torres Espitia con Juana Macias - 11 Jan 1615
It took me a long time to find this marriage record in the middle of the Baptism records.
Now, can someone please help me determine the names of their parents?
Comments
Roy,
The marriage record reads as follows:
"Hernando de Torres Espitia con Juana Macias"
"En 11 de enero de 615 años desposó el Padre Juan de Estrada,
Cura y Vicario de esta Villa, a Hernando de Torres Espitia,
natural de México, con Juana Macías natural de Los Gallos,
hija de Felipe Macías, premisas las solemnidades, sien-
do testigos Alonso Peguero y Francisco Macías. Velolos
el Padre Lorenzo Rodríguez de la Vera en Los Gallos a 17 de
septiembre de 1619 años. Padrinos Gaspar Macías
y Mariana de Torres, vecinos de Los Gallos. [firma] Lorenzo Rodríguez."
Only Juana's father Felipe Macías is mentioned in this record. The area known as Los Gallos is just about 15 miles SSE of the city of Aguascalientes, in Jalisco (Cerro de Los Gallos).

Felipe Macias had also a son named Juan Macias who married Ana Mendez (daughter of Baltzar Gamboa and Ana Mendez) on April 2, 1619 in Aguascalientes. Similar to the marriage of his daughter, Felipe is only mentioned as the parent of the groom. Witnesses included Lope Ruiz de Esparza and Alonso Macias. By the way, Los Gallos was the property where the Macias Valades originally settled, not far from El Sauz de los Macias, located in the vicinity of Encarnacion de Diaz.
Jaime
Jaime,
Thanks...Juan Macias has been added to my tree as a 9th GG Uncle.
However, I read him as married to Juana Mendez.

Do you know the parents and/or spouse of Felipe Macias?
Saludos,
Roy
Roy,
You are right, I meant to say Juana Mendez. Ana is the mother's name.
Jaime
Roy,
Regarding your question of who are the parents or the spouse of Felipe Macias (I), it is a question I've tried to answer for a while. The timeline of the marriages of his son Juan (1619) and his daughter Juana (1615) suggests that they were born around 1595. Note that these marriages coincide with the marriage of Felipe Macias (II) the son of Alonso Macias and Maria Vazquez de Retamosa, to Maria Tavera (1518). Although we do not have information on the birthdates of the children of Alonso and Maria, using the timeline of their marriages of the Macias-Retamosa children, we can assume they were born between 1580-1595. If Felipe was among the oldest of these children, lets say born in the early 1580's, it is possible that he could have fathered both Juan and Juana in the late 1590's, perhaps out of wedlock, later marrying Maria Tavera when he was about 40. However, another more likely explanation is that Felipe (I) was an uncle of Felipe (II).
Jaime
I have concluded that it was the Felipe Macías that married María Tavera
that was the father of Juana Vázquez Macías. See my post at
http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/es/node/21576

Jaime:

Hi,
I have Francisco Velasco and Maria Ceron married Nov 19, 1636 in Mix1uiahuala, Hidalgo, Mexico
Church record states that Francisco is a "national de la ciudad de Sevilla" His parents are listed as Antonio de Velasco and Maria de Arce I suppose they are from Sevilla also.
Maria Ceron's parents are listed as Juan Ceron And Agustina Perez (both deceased )
Their children I have are:
Juan Velasco Ceron Baptized Nov 2, 1636, San Antonio Mixquiahuala, Hidalgo
Francisco Velasco Ceron - Baptized Jan 12, 1638, San Antonio, Mixqiahula
( he married Nicolasa Ruiz de Esparza Nov 19, 1665, Aguascalientes, Ags.
Francisco Velasco is my 9th generation great grandfather
Aurora Romo
Hi Aurora,
According to Miguel de Velasco (who married María de Espinosa July 31, 1692 in Aguascalientes) his father Francisco de Velasco was a mestizo, the son of an "indian" woman and an "español". Your research indicates that his parents were Francisco de Velasco and María Ceron of Mixquihuala, Hidalgo. Was María Ceron an indian?
Here is the link to the document where Miguel de Velasco declared that his father was a mestizo:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-11770-84403-8?cc=1502404&w…
A transcription of the first lines is as follows:
(...) "= Dijo llamarse Miguel de Velasco
y que es hijo legitimo de Francisco de Velasco y Nicolasa
Ruiz de Esparza y que es natural de esta Villa. = Si[endole]
preguntado que calidad y estado tiene = Dijo [ ]
y sin duda no es enteramente Español porque su Padre [es]
mestizo por ser hijo de una India y de un Español
que el no sabe lo que puede ser que es de estado [si]
fuese preguntado"...etc. etc.
Which source did you find that confirms that Francisco de Velasco (who married Nicolasa Ruiz de Esparza in Aguascalientes) is the son of Francisco Velasco and Maria Ceron of Mixquihuala, Hidalgo? Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for info but a son was baptized 11/2/1636 and the parents married 11/19/1636?? is this a typo?
Irma
The church records for Francisco Velasco and Maria Ceron stated they were married Nov 19, 1636
The baptism church records for Juan Velasco Ceron found in Bautismos 1632-1672 in Mixquiahala. Hidalgo on Image 24 is listed as Nov. 2, 1636.
Bill Figueroa,
The information about Francisco Velasco who married Nicolasa Ruiz being the child of Francisco Velasco and Maria Ceron was on one of the Family Search sites. It is on one that is not always accurate. Since I found the info I have been trying to find actual documentation. If Francisco Velasco’s mother was India as the Info Matrimonial states for Miguel Velasco perhaps their mother is not Maria Ceron. If I read the Baptism document of Juan Velasco correctly it states that both his parents are españoles
Saludos
Aurora
yes, sometimes people wouldn't get married until after their first child was born.
also, like haciendaromo said, church records weren't always a hundred percent accurate. sometimes, you could have two children from from the same parents being given casta labels.

El Sagrario, Aguascalientes film offline at FamilySearch?
Maybe I've been asleep at the wheel, missed an issue or two here, or something.

Annette
I think at some point the films were re-posted with the proper name of the church: Asuncion de Maria. Some other changes to the Mexico resources were made as well.
Microfilm Film numbers are also now there. If you recorded image numbers from the original posting, you will now find that they are a few images off.
George Fulton
Pleasanton, CA
George and Annette,
They were re-posted under the general Mexico directory like the most of the other states were being placed. Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, and some towns in Jalisco were originally made under a Mexico Church records sub-directory. At the same time they re-posted the images they put them in order of microfilm names and added microfilm images that were missing, (an important one that was missing was the one that included the number of the microfilm). Previously they were grouped by microfilm name so even if we had a good microfilm number and microfilm name the images would be under a different range of years. Now if we have a film number we can find the film name then go to that film name in the list. It seems the image numbers are off by 4 digits for the most part to allow for the microfilm images that were originally missing, except in the case where the images were grouped into a different film name. All of the links that were put in place after the transition from the pilot project (those links actually contained the word pilot) still work even after they put them into their appropriate film name. This was to my benefit since I had linked my records to the web address of it's specific record. This made things much easier for me,and still does, when I wanted to revisit a record.

Rose:
I received your book in the mail yesterday. Congratulations. It is a great compilation of very valuable genealogical information.
I notice that you have Colotlan parish records listed as one of your sources and I was wondering if you could point out what branches/surnames are from Colotlan. Just curious to see if we have some common ancestors. I know that some of my Tepechitlan families must have come from Nochistlan, i.e. "Gonzalez de Yslas" etc are definitely Nochistlense names.
Hi Arturo
The San Luis Colotlan, Jalisco families are the Montoya, Banuelos and Rubalcava's. I do hope you find the book helpful. For the past 5 years this is how I conducted my research by alpha order and the more names I found, I'd pencil them in until it grew to the size it is today. Genealogy is never done so I'm sure there will be later editions down the road.
Enjoy and Thanks
Rose
I'm not sure how this got on the announce list but I moved it back to

okay Rose so tell us about your Banuelos. What are the details could be

I highly encourage you to try to get it distributed as far and wide as possible. I recently donated copies of my book to a number of libraries including the Los Angeles Public Library and the Library of Congress.
In addition to being a great source of pride, I think it is important that that our research get recognition and shelf space. Walking into many genealogy collections at libraries would lead to you believe that the U.S. population is all of English, Irish and German descendancy.
The Library of Congress Genealogy Reading Room dedicates a whole six inches of shelf space to Mexican genealogy.
Talk to George Farias at Borderlands Books about distributing your book. He gets orders from many libraries that collect Latino/Mexican genealogical works.
Arturo
I totally agree with you about distribution. I have The Library of Congress and Los Angeles Public Library on my list. I also donated to Sutro in San Francisco and Azusa City Library, where I was born and raised. I do have George's e-mail and have referred my cousin, John to him for his book.
We certainly do need to share our history.
Thank you for your input.

Hello Rose,

What an accomplishment!!
I will be in touch once I purchase and read your book.

This is a very useful resource, unfortunately it is out of print. However, it is available in some libraries.
A according to Worldcat it is available at the Arizona State Library, Phoenix, as well as the University of Arizona Library, Tucson.
Worldcat, www.worldcat.org, is a very convenient way to locate hard to find books. Many libraries, but not all, are part of this system. If you enter your Zipcode, Worldcat gives you a list of libraries beginning with the one closest to you.

Introduction
Hello,
Comments
Hello Tina,
Your post was never mailed out so only people that visit this thread at http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/es/node/21546 will see the post.
There are a lot of records lost or damaged long before they started to microfilm the records so that might be why you can't find the baptism you are looking for.
Your ancestor Teresa Infante Moreno is very likely related to the Díaz-Infante family and to the Moreno de Ortega family.
The godparents of her daughter Luisa de Yepes were Bartolomé Díaz-Infante González-Soriano and María Ana de Anda Altamirano y Moreno de Ortega married 8 Jan 1708 in Lagos de Moreno.
An uncle of Bartolomé was Diego Díaz Infante Espinosa married to Teresa Moreno de Ortega Villegas 24 Nov 1651 in Lagos de Moreno.
Since Manuel Yepes and Teresa Infante Moreno had their first recorded child baptized on 24 Jan 1715 they were married the beginning in 1714 or prior to that. You should search the volumes of Información Matrimonial to see if they had a matrimonial investigation recorded in Lagos in the beginning in 1714 or prior to that.
Also if you look at the godparents of all of the Diaz Infante children and their marriages between 1680 and 1750 you might find a clue. Also the testigos in the Información Matrimonial records might also give you some clues. Other clues to look for are the ranches they were said to have been born in. The children of Teresa Infante Moreno were born in Mariquita, Salsipuedes (belonged to the Moreno de Ortega family) and Portezuelo.

Armando
Hello Armando
Thank you so much for the information. I found Pedro's information on family search but when I went to look for the baptism record, I coudn't find it.
I am quite new to getting around some of the records and now this site which I find quite amazing. I will have to figure out how to post so that all can see.
Again thank you so much

What is the date? What is the film number?
Armando
Below is the information on familySearch. Pedro Hernandez, 04 July 1858 baptism. San Francisco de Asis, Tepatitlan de Morelos, Jalisco, Mexico
Most records I have been able to find with not problem but there are a few that the information is there but when i go into the baptismal records I hit a wall.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NV5Y-3WYEley
Tina
Since the index record at https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NV5Y-3WY states that the baptismal record exists in film 218462 it has to be in the volume named Bautismos de hijos legítimos 1857-1860. There is no doubt it will be there. You need to go page by page. The dates are sometimes out of order.
Armando
That is what I thought. I will try again. Also, in the informaciones de matrimonios, are they filled out on the same day as the marriage or prior to the marriage. This is an area I have not attempted to dive into yet but need to now.
Again, thanks so much Armando
Tina Eley
The información matrimonial records are usually completed about a month to a week prior to the marriage. Sometimes they exist when marriage records don't exist. Also at times marriage records contain ages of the bride and groom, the names of the parents, and three witnesses. At times information about a witness can be a clue.

Abbreviation Question: "Esp" in 1756 Jerez Baptism Record
Hello!
Comments
Kristine,
Most of the time that records aren't digitized online it is because they were lost or damaged long before they started to microfilm them. That seems to be what happened in Jerez. That is why Katy was telling you that it is likely that your only hope is finding a dispensa that mentions your ancestors.
Also, the document you linked states that Joseph Vicente was an hijo legitimo and not hijo ilegitimo. In those days illegitimate children were called hijo natural (one parent is known or both but weren't married) or hijo de padres no conocidos (neither parent is known) and not hijo ilegitimo.
Armando
Armando,
Thank you for expanding on the previous explanation. There is so much to be learned and the community here has been so extremely helpful.
I am going to start looking through that website Katy suggested and see what I can find.
I have gone this far, and I must continue.
Thank you again to everyone!!
Kristine
talking about marriage dispensations, i have done some indexing myself(, if you want i could email you some index that i'm at least almost finished with that haven't been uploaded to the site yet.
Katy,
Yes, that would be great, I would appreciate any help that I can get. My email is kristinewulf@gmail.com
Thank you so very much !!
Kristine
ok i'll send you the ones that i sent to guadalajara dispensas that have YET to be uploaded to the site. later, i'll send you the ones i finished that i haven't emailed to her yet. i sent them from google docs through my email on that site: which is ponyboycurtis@live.com (i initially signed up to youtube with this email, but youtube automatically created a google account for every youtube acount, and made the useranems, email, and password sync. that's why i have a googledocs using a hotmail email)
esp is an abbrebiation for espanol. in that context, it means that lineage-wise the child was supposedly white.
you can learn more about the caste system here (although there are some exceptions to the rules stated on that link. for example in jerez (and other nearby towns) people with as much as 1/4 amerindian ancestry usually got the espanol label. occasionally i've seen people whomarked as espanol, then i later found out they had 50%+ amerindian ancestry)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casta
Thank you for the reply and the explanation.
In my family, we have always heard that we are from Spain, somewhere, but no one knows where, and now that almost all the elder generation has passed away, there is no one to ask. So this may be leading me to the right direction.
I will keep looking. The abbreviations are a bit difficult mixed with the handwriting, but I love the challenge.
I am noticing that there are some missing records for Jerez, in the 1750's, not quite sure where to look now.
Kristine
yes unofrtunately there is a lot of missing records from jerez, which makes tracing my linage on my grandma's side of the family more difficult. anyways more than likely, your ancestors came to mexico more than 200 years ago at least.
Yes, tracing my ancestors back to 1756 right now, is absolutely fascinating. I want to continue, but now that I am getting to the point of missing records, I know it is going to get harder. But that is all a part of the challenge of genealogy, isn't it? =)
If anyone has any tips and tricks as to how to find records from Jerez, that would be great. I am going to start looking for any other children they may have had on that last record I do have and see if there are any other bits of information.
Thank you again for your help.
Kristine
see if you can find marraige records of you ancestors, or their siblings/cousins here
http://www.guadalajaradispensas.com/
the link contained indexes for some marriage dispensations. the indexing project is still ongoing.
I will! Thank you for the link!
I have been looking online for other resources or ways to possibly contact the church directly for those missing records, but haven't been able to find a reliable source yet.
Kristine

This is amazing. I never imagined I'd make it into the 1700s and just like

Hello Ashlynn,
I posted most of the following in your thread at
http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/es/node/21539 but since at times the email
notifications fail for posts on sites at times I will send it in an email
with some additional info.
The parents of José Ruvalcaba were Juan Antonio Rubalcava Villalobos and
Isabel Macias married 27 May 1764 in Aguascalientes.
Film 299828
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-11082-70037-48?
Juan Antonio Rubalcava Villalobos was baptized 8 Feb 1730 in Aguascalientes
and his parents were Miguel González de Rubalcava and María Villalobos y
Escoto Tovar.
The registro matrimonial and the Información Matrimonial of Miguel González
de Rubalcava and María Villalobos y Escoto Tovar are missing but the
parents of María Villalobos y Escoto Tovar are known thanks to the
following dispensa

María Villalobos y Escoto Tovar was baptized 28 Feb 1694 in Aguascalientes
and her parents were Isidro de Villalobos Macías Valadez and Francisca
Gertrudis Escoto y Tovar.
Isidro de Villalobos Macías Valadez was buried 27 April 1699 in
Aguascalientes. His parents were Francisco de Villalobos y Pérez and María
Vásquez de Retamosa who married 22 May 1640 in Teocaltiche.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-19053-2891-27?
The reason we know we have the right baptism of Isidro de Villalobos Macías
Valadez is because of a dispensa that shows that he is a sibling of Antonia
de Villalobos and her registro matrimonial mentions her parents.

Since the marriage document is torn the surname of Maria Perez's father is
not seen nor the first name of her mother but we can conclude that the

Therefore her parents are Cristóbal Pérez and ? Magdalena. There is a

Ashlynn,
Esther is right, the parents are Salvador de Mendoza and Maria Delgado. That is confirmed by the marriage record of Apolonia de Mendoza and Jose de Robalcaba who were married on 15 Jan 1806 in Encarnacion de Diaz. Here is the link: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18564-57408-10?cc=1874591&wc…
Salvador de Mendoza and Maria Lopez Delgado are my 5th Great Grandparents through Apolonia's sister Maria Guadalupe de Mendoza. I can give you a little more information, but I dead end a generation later. Salvador de Mendoza, mestizo and Maria Lopez Delgado, Española were married on 29 May 1774 at Nuestra Señora de los Dolores in Teocaltiche. Maria Lopez Delgado is the hija natural of Esteban Lopez and Rita Delgado. Salvador de Mendoza is the legitimate son of indian chieftain don Blas de Mendoza, Cacíque and Maria de Jesus Díaz, Española.
Actually, If anyone has the parents or knows anything about don Blas de Mendoza or Maria de Jesus Díaz, that would be great. Thanks everyone.

Hola miembros,
My name is Ashlynn Marie Castaneda. I joined a few weeks ago, but didn't
get a chance to introduce myself while finishing up classes. I just
graduated college last week and am taking a year off for an internship
before going to law school. I'm hoping to use this time to further my
ancestral search. I'm focusing on my female line right now since my dad is
not nearly as interested or as excited as my mom by searching for records.
I'm hoping to find the marriage record and parents of Apolonia de Mendoza
and Jose Ruvalcaba. I believe they're both from Encarnación de Díaz. They
would've been married somewhere between 1800 - 1820, I'm guessing. They
probably would've been born around 1800. I only know they're names from the
marriage record of their child that I descend from. Hopefully, someone will
be able to assist.
Have a great Memorial Day weekend,
Ashlynn
Hi Everyone,
I should have probably mentioned that don Blas de Mendoza and Maria de Jesus Díaz would have been born sometime around 1730 in Teocaltiche or Encarnación de Díaz and married around the middle of the century. Thanks Everyone.

Ashlynn,
Esther is right, the parents are Salvador de Mendoza and Maria Delgado.

Christopher,
I found a Blas Mendoza, ch. 29 Oct 1720 in Jalostitlan, Jalisco, film
0279254, (1707-1722) and it mentions parents as Juan Antto. y Franca. De
Mendoza. Would this be something you are interested in?

There's a child born 8 Apr 1816 (film # 1155174) in Encarnacion de Diaz,
Jalisco named Ma. Teodora Robalcaba Mendoza and it lists not only Jose
Robalcaba an Apolonia Mendosa but also mentions maternal grandparents as:
Salvador Mendoza and Maria Delgado.
I think that might change their marriage date to an earlier time. Another
child besides those you might already have is Rafaela Rubalcaba Mendoza,
ch. 10 Sep 1817, film # 1155174.
Hope this helps.

Since the marriage document is torn the surname of Maria Perez's father is not seen nor the first name of her mother but we can conclude that the surname should be Perez and the mother's surname is Madalena (Magdalena). Therefore her parents are Cristóbal Pérez and ? Magdalena. There is a marriage entry in the same church for a couple with these names within a reasonable time frame for them to be the parents of María.
Cristóbal Pérez López and María Magdaleno Hernández married 19 Dec 1577
