Is there a master Surname list for the Ranchos group? Or a master
Place-name list? As I am fairly new to this group I haven't figured
out all the ins-and-outs of getting through all the information, so
don't know if I have overlooked that bit of information. Thank you all
for your inspiring hard work. I have ordered film - and if it stops
snowing I'll go over to the local FHC to review them (the film came in
this week, it snowed Thurs., so they were closed Thurs.& Fri -
bummer). FYI: it is film #1164736 - Valparaiso, Zacatecas - Church
records, La Purisima, Baptisms, 1911-1918; I am focusing on those
children born at Astillero (includes my father, b.1912) during that
time period. Y'all take care - have a good weekend.

Hi Carol,

Campos might tie in.  I still need to work more on my

Hello Irma:

Nice to hear from you.  I am pretty ignorant of
Mexico and it's "towns", or "ranchos', as they call them?  But
the areas I know of are Momax, Tlaltenango, Totoletiche(sp?) in Zacatecas.
In Jalisco, I am not sure, but have been told that the "ranchos"  border
the states of Zacatecas and Jalisco.  One of these is an area called "El
Refugio".
Also, the "Alvarez" ancestors list is pretty
large and encompasses many surnames.  The strongest is "Campos".
I will be posting my genealogy as it is to this group and hopefully will find
some connections.  The two names you mentioned are not

This sounds like the couple needed a dispensation to marry.  This
stuff is right up my alley, so to speak.  I am rather familiar with
marriage dispensations, where both the bride and the groom were related to one

Tip Of Ice Burg - was:% of Films Transcribed to IGI

Well yes a couple. We live in a wonderous time when sources for
genealogy research are plentiful. It used to be that the only way
people could do their research was by traveling to the area or
requesting info from the area via the Postal System. With the great
information we have from the LDS system our opportunities are
tremendously increased for having success in finding info in a way that
is convenient to our lifestyles. All that being said I'd like to say a
couple of things with regards to what is available via the LDS system
and outside the LDS system:

1) they have a fabulous collection of books available only at their
central location, but some are on fiche/microfilm. They do take
requests to microfilm books but this can more often than not be
unsuccessful since they need to get the authors permission before doing
so.

2) As we know they have a tremendous amount of films that have been
transcribed with the information put into the various databases: IGI,
etc.

3) they have

Hi Peggy,

It appears to be so. Such is the case of those films from Valparaiso
that started this discussion. What you can do is go to the Family
History Library Catalog and do a Place Search

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp

Then select the place out of the list; in the place details select
the topic of your interest, for example, Church records. Then in
topic details select one of the titles. Finaly, in the title details
click the upper right button "View Film Details".

There you will see all the films that are available for the locality
of your choice, whether they are in the IGI or not. Hope this helps!

Jose, yes,
thanks for all your hard work.  I
was wondering how the information made it from the films to the data we see on
the Internet.  I sometimes get
impatient that I can’t find the names I want online, totally forgetting that
there’s some poor soul going through stacks of films, such as yourself, deciphering
names, and entering data.

Thanks,
thanks, thanks!!!!

Hello
All!  I can attest to the fact that
not all film is on the IGI.  I was
looking for the birth record of my maternal grandmother who was born in Sierra
Mojada, Coahuila and it wasn’t on the IGI but I went and ordered the microfilm
and found her – and found that she had a twin brother!!!! I thought, though,
that this was a standard thing and not to take the IGI data, or lack thereof,
to heart and to keep looking.

Victor; I don't know the percentages. I know that I have a stack of 2,500

I think that there are others who still are working on a film for the

After I finish there is a review of those that I've done soas to be sure
that the names i have cleared are then reviewed for correctness. Those that
still can not be read are reviewed and later posted to Salt Lake. Some I can
clearly read but have never seen such a name before.
Yes, you are correct, there are new names being cleared everyday and
sent for posting. I am working on a the baptisms for a church in South
American from 1890-1895. Others are extracting names from films in other
countries and locations. It takes a long time because I want it to be
correct and hopw someone somewhere is extracting the line I am waiting to
see.

I just started a new Album in the Photos section of the group. It's
called Ranchero's y Rancherita's. If anyone else would care to why not
put your picture (singular) in the Album. Make sure you put your

Well, that means that even if we haven't found a particular record on

itself. And that goes also for the records in those microfilms that
haven't been captured yet, of course.

Anyway, back to the original question. Do you have an idea, just an
approximation about the percentage of films that have already been

Thanks again!
