Changing surnames

I have come across an interesting situation with one branch of my family the baptism record and marriage record show my 2nd great grandmother as Maria Matilde Medel (born 1833 in San Miguel el Alto, J

rmcneal,

I have a similar situation with my Paternal Grandmother's line. Her last name is "Ceja" from Las Zarquillas, Villamar, Michoacan. Rumors/family stories say her family's orignal last name was "Zamora" and that they changed it to "Ceja" during La Cristeada war or Mexican revolution because they were being persecuted by the goverment, but I have discovered that they (my ancestors) have been alternating Ceja & Zamora for some generations before the Mexican revolution. Some of my ancestors were baptized "Ceja" and marry as "Zamora" and vice-versa. I've found many documents altenating these 2 last names during the 1800's. I honestly have no idea why they did it, hope to one day find out.

Hola Roberto,

I am just going to get started on the Ceja name. One of my aunts Teresa
Mendoza married Alfredo Ceja in Guadalajara where they presently reside.
His father was Roman Ceja Godinez married to Soledad Diaz. This is just
the beginning I have for this family.

Hi Esther,

I have not placed all the pieces together on my "Ceja" line, becuase I have been busy/focused on my direct paternal line, the Hernandez from Ayo el chico & La Barca, Jalisco. But I can almost "bet" that your research on the "Ceja" line, will take you to the Villamar, Jiquilpan, Guaracha, Zamora & Sahuayo Michoacan Archives. I'm not sure if that's where early Ceja families first establised, but there sure is a lot of "Cejas" in that region of Michoacan (Region Cienega/Near Chapala lake). Hope we can make some connections, though I don't have much info on this line yet.

My wifes family also interchanged de la Santa Cruz and lomelin. I found out that it was because an ancestor was born out of wedlock so he used his mothers surname de la Santa Cruz but her grandchildren used both surnames and the siblings branches off with some family members choosing one or the other surname. These lomelin and Santa cruz were from Sam Juan de Los Lagos and Sam Miguel el alto Jalisco

Rmcneal,

Yes - I have come across situations like this and it can be very
frustrating. The further back you go the more variations you will find with
surnames. It is not uncommon for siblings to use different surnames,
sometimes it is simple like using the mother's surname instead of the
fathers, but other times they use the name of a grandparent so it looks like
the name came out of nowhere.

Hello: please tell me where you found the passport photos link on family search. I have found good information from freedom on information act request to US Citizenshlip and Immigration services some papers included passport pictures and in their own words some of my ancestors history (those of recent years and those who migrated to the US). I also came across a Who's Who in Mexico book at the University of Texas at Austin with a quick reference to one of my ancestors who was a doctor. Hope this helps. Anita

Hello Anita,

From the Search Results page in the Family Search database you can select the drop down menu by clicking the little triangular icon to the right of the persons name, this will reveal more info i.e. DOB, arrival date, port, and other details, on that list it will say "record has photo" followed by yes or no. If there is a photo all you have to do is click on the name of the person and there is usually a link on the following page where you can download the record with photo (though you may have to sign in/create account etc). However if the image is not available the page will give you more details, film # etc. to facilitate an independent search and browse through of images and then all you have to do is find the records and go page by page to search for you relevant document/pictures.
Hope that helps!

There is an entry in the GEDCOM database for Marcelo Gandara, b: abt 1790.

He is my 4th Great Grandfather. However I find his entry is incomplete and somewhat incorrect.

Hey everyone,
Just want to share a find.  I'm looking for Castaneda in Jerez, Zac.  I came across a Tomas Castanon with parents Gregorio Castanon and Isabel Galvan in Ermita de los Correas, which are the names of my great-grandmother's parents.  On a hunch, I looked up the baptismal record and found all the right names, including grandparents. The priest made a mistake on the paternal last name!  I feel like Sherlock Holmes.  :-)

Still haven't found my great-grandmother Vita Castaneda Galvan, but I've found some of her brothers. Time for bed...

Congratulations! This success points out a very good rule of thumb. Either
the scribes, priest, and/or the people who are transcribing the records can
make mistakes. Always go to the source material to confirm.

I have loved Mariachi music for some time since my husband introduced it to me years ago. I got to go to a large mariachi music concert in Las Vegas with my mother- and father-in-law years ago, and I had a wonderful time. As I speak very little Spanish, I don't understand the words, but I really enjoy the music and the singing.

I noticed a real similarity between Mariachi music and German "Oomm Pah Pah" music and mentioned it to my mother-in-law. She said that was possible because there were a lot of German settlers in Jalisco as well as other parts of Mexico. (I did remember seeing a graveyard in Central Baja where all the names were German!)

Does anyone think that there could be a connection between the German music and Mariachi music? I hear the German music every year at Oktoberfest and it really reminds me of the Mariachi music, too. However, it doesn't have the emotion or heart that Mariachi music has in it!

Yes

German polkas do sound a lot like the mariachi sound. In the state of Sonora next to Baja, I see some French names, but I don't know when they emigrated to Mexico. Perhaps Germans settled near there too.

You are confusing Mariachi music and Norteño music. Mariachi music is
identified as being from Jalisco. There is no evidence that Mariachi was
influenced by Germans. Norteño music is just that, northern, and doesn't
have a place in a discussion of the states of Jalisco, Zacatecas and
Aguascalientes.

Armando,
you're correct to note the differences in music between polka-influenced Norteño (i.e., northern) music and mariachi. However, polka did influence the music of Zacatecas in the form of the "Tamborazo" genre. If you want to hear an example of this, check out a few songs from my uncle Victor Gonzalez ("El Tigre de Zacatecas") on YouTube:

1. Tus Vacasiones : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2toS9CzPHg&feature=context-chv
and
2. La Del Morral : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOvUcv_muYc&feature=plcp

The Tamporazo is derived from Banda from Sinaloa, probably popularized during the revolution. Polish immigrants introduced the polka in Sinaloa and the Banda style was probably spread during the revolution in the early 20th century. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_of_Mexico#Banda

Jose Antonio Michel
I read your posting about the myth of French blood in Jalisco. With a last name like "Michel" my father always said we descended from a French soldier who stayed in Jalisco after the Franco intervention. He knew several different versions from other Jalisiences about how their descendants spread along the Ameca or Armeria river valley all the way to Colima. I think he honestly believed it. When I started doing genealogy research in 1990, within a short time I found the Michel surname present in Jalisco as early as the mid 1500's. I think my dad was disapointed when I proved his theory or story wrong. Later I showed my father that our first ancestor in Mexico was Juan Michel Ordonez(AKA El Portugues) son of the Spanish knight Diego de San Martin who arrived with Hernan Cortez. I explained how the authors Antonio Tello(Cronica Miscelanea de Santa Provincia de Xalisco), Matias de la Mota Padilla(Historia del Reino de la Nueva Galicia), and Jose Lopez Portillo y Weber(La conquista , y la Rebellion de la Nueva Galicia) all chronicle the life and feats of Juan Michel Ordonez among other conquistadors. I truthfully believe my father likes this true and documented version better than his old story. Ive researched the Pares website but Ive yet to locate the origin of my Michel surname.

Hello Everyone,  I've been doing my research on my grandfather's Valdez, (Valdes) line.  He was born in La Estancia, Tepetongo, but his line comes from Jerez (Los Cuervos).  I've been able to go back to my 4X gr grandfather and there the records have a very large gap.  From 1835 to beyond 1849 no records exist on Family Search. I was wondering if anyone has been successful finding records for this period.  Perhaps I've missed something.

Thanks for any help anyone can give.  It's particularly frustrating, because I think I know who my 5X gr grandfather is but need some records to confirm.

Gracias!

I have used familytreedna for my Father and a maternal uncle.
Father: ydna Halogroup: I2b1 I-M223 and mtdna Halogroup A, waiting on results from snp test.
Uncle: ydna Halogroup: R1b1a2 R-M269
Familytreedna included all DNA markings/codes, halogroups, certificate, ancestral maps, and allows you to add additional tests, and makes it easy to join groups that your DNA applies to.

Ancestry.com had a promotion when they were going to launch DNA testing for current subscribers to test for $9.99 for a limited amount of participants so I had my son due this test. I was disappointed, even if I am very limited on my knowledge of DNA, they do not provide DNA markings/codes, halogroups, certificate only a pie chart & map and possible relations that subscribe to Ancestry.com only, I would recommend familytreedna. My son is now testing with familytreedna. Hope this helps.

Will you be doing a Deep Clade on your uncle for Haplogroup R1b1a2 R-M269?
He will probably be able to be placed farther down in the R1b tree. You can
see what it looks like here

Saludos prima.

Hola Juan Francisco.

Emilie,

I see that you mention some Llanos Valdes in your ancestors, I´m interested in that family because I´ve been tracing the roots of  some very good friends from Morelia,  Mex who are de

Mi primer Frances, my first Frenchman ever

Attached is the link to the frenchman I was referring to who was from Jalpa Zacatecas and he married in Nochistlan.

Hi Alice,
This is interesting. It's my understanding that the French made their way to Jalpa during the Maximilian era. According to a wikipedia entry, parts of Jalpa were modeled in the French tradition.

What else can you tell me about your Olasava line? I stumbled upon "Felipa Olasava" in La Villita in the 1820 Census for Jalpa. I believe she is the mother of Lauriano Gonzalez, as these are listed under the same household and Felipa is listed first (there's no one else listed). You'll find the Olasava household in page 16 (1820-016-Jalpa.jpg) of the 1820 Census (Film # 168818): www.arturogonzalez.com/1820JalpaPadron.zip

A search for "Felipa Olasava" with a spouse with a "Gonzalez" last name let to 1779 wedding in Teocaltiche with Cristoval Gonzales Bermejo, https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JCDS-YX9 . Do you think this is the same Felipa and are they related to your Olasava line?

I'd be very interested in knowing what you find.

Thanks,
Arturo
