Trip to Nochistlan

Hi!

With the shame, I travel to nochistlán about 10 times by year, and don't know if there is a good library. There is the "biblioteca municipal" at "la presidencia", but the books are for consulting, not for sale. And I remember have seen a magazine store in "el mercado", that was 2 or 3 years ago.

The only one book I have read about Nochistlán's history is "Nochistlán de Zacatecas" of Clotilde Evelia Quirarte an exemplar mochistlense woman and a very good book.

I get this book at "el parian" in a wedding shop almost at the corner southwest of this place.

I am half nochistlense, but I am misinformed. I hope you can find better help.

Don't forget to taste a good "plato de birria" some "gorditas con papas, sopes, pozole" and an icecream sitting at "el jardín". There are "carnitas" and "pollos asados" but don't know how nochistlenses are they.

P.D. Almost forgot "las micheladas"

P.D.2 I think the church you said is "el templo de San José"

Hi!

I went yesterday to Nocistlán and saw a library.

The address is "Vicente Guerrero # 14", is at the street behind "la presidencia municipal"

Abram,

There is a wonderful bookstore in Nochistlan but unfortunately I can't remember the name but all she has to do is ask anyone in town and they will direct her to the book store. They don't have lending libraries but they do have a bookstore.

Hi, Pauline...my great, great, great grandmother Maria Monica Alvarez was the sister of Juan Nepomuceno Alvarez (Cirilo's Grandfather). Victor Lopez and I are 5th cousins through this Alvarez lineage, as well.

HI Joseph,

Thanks for the information. And yes- we are cousins. That is so cool. Although I just started my research with this line, the records on this line of my family are from Cuculitan as you mentioned. This really exciting.

I went to the new family search site and registered but it stated that it will let me know when in the future I will have access. I will check the old site for the rest. Do you have a file already completed on this line? Also are these Miramontes descended from the early settlers in the area? There is the book "Familias Antiguas de Tlaltenango". Are the same Miramontes? There is also a Godoi- Andrea Godoi in this line.

Any information is appreciated.
Gracias Primo.

Hello Edward Luna and Nuestro Ranchos members.

Don't know if any of you have heard about the movie “For Greater Glory” due to be released in theaters June 1, 2012

"For Greater Glory– formerly called “Cristiada” – charts the history
of Mexico’s Cristero War that was sparked by anti-clerical legislation
being passed by the Mexican President Elías Calles in 1926. Those laws
banned religious orders, deprived the Church of property rights and
denied priests civil liberties, including the right to trial by jury and the right to vote.

The persecution became so fierce that some
Catholics began to forcibly resist, fighting under the slogan and banner
of “Cristo Rey” (Christ the King).

I am heading off to my hometown, Jamay, in June for a 50th wedding

guide me as to who to contact once I'm there? Is there a particular parish

According to this webpage, it has the following address:

This parrish is just one block away from the Cathedral.

Regarding Petronila Moctezuma,I have seen 1550 suggested as a year of birth. Where does this come from?

Elsewhere on the internet I have seen reference to a letter from Diego Sotelo (husband of Leonor Valderrama Moctezuma) to the king of Spain, regarding the inheritance of his children from their mother, in which he names Fernando, Cristofer, and Petronila. Anyone have any leads on this letter???
This is where I saw the information (genealogia de mexico, from jan 2006):

http://groups.google.com/group/genealogia-mexico/browse_thread/thread/7…

Donald Chipman, author of Moctezuma's Children, listes Fernando, Cristofer, and Ana, who became a nun (therefore I dont think she also went by the name Petronila.) Chipman also relates that Leonor's encomienda - at least the share that went to her children - was to be divided three ways, not four. So, I am a little confused.

So, any primary sources regading the parentage of Petronila??? or regarding her birthyear?

Denise

Thank you Claudia, Enrique & Jaime for your dedication in helping the families of Nuestros Ranchos! The connection to our ancestors, Martin Navarro and Petronilla de Moctezume, in this dispensation makes it such a treasure to so very many researchers. However, I find some of this document difficult to understand. I know this is a lot to ask (since there are several pages), but would anyone be willing to translate it into English?

With great appreciation for this group!

George,

This is a great find. I find it suprisingly odd that many did not believe Petronila de Moctezuma existed at all. Proof has always been there. The ultimate find would be the marriage record of Petronila de Moctezuma and Martin "el Navarro" de Gabay that is said to exist. It has probably been lost in the Mexico City archives which consists of several kilometers of documentation.

I descend from Nicolas Rodriguez Ponce and his second wife Catalina Velazquez de Anguiano (who was from Ixtlan, Michoacan d/o Diego Matoso and Luisa de Alfaro) through their son Joseph Rodriguez Ponce whose son married into the Martinez de Sotomayor family. Nicolas was son of Capt. Francisco Rodriguez Ponce who was a miner in the Real de Asientos and Juana de Siordia. The Rodriguez Ponce also Rodriguez Ponce de Leon were from Lepe, Condado de Aramonte, Huelva, Andalucia, Spain. In case these details help anyone.

Also, do you have any more details on Alonso de Ulloa y Marquez and Juana Munoz de Xerez? I had no idea these were the parents of Pedro Marquez de Ulloa.

Daniel,

The following would be of interest to other descendants of Petronila Moctezuma.

Another reference to the surname Moctezuma apears in the last will of Juana de Siordia, grandaughter of Petronila, where she refers to her mother Maria Gabai Moctezuma. Below is the transcription I made of her will that can be located in the "Archivo Historico de Aguascalientes".

Welcome to the website. I am relatively new, too. My family is Estrada, too, but we descend from a couple that settled in the Tlaltenango, Zacatecas area in the 1600's. Good luck with your research.

Hi!

With the shame, I travel to nochistl?n about 10 times by year, and don't know if there is a good library. There is the "biblioteca municipal" at "la presidencia", but the books are for consulting, not for sale. And I remember have seen a magazine store in "el mercado", that was 2 or 3 years ago.

The only one book I have read about Nochistl?n's history is "Nochistl?n de Zacatecas" of Clotilde Evelia Quirarte an exemplar mochistlense woman and a very good book.

I get this book at "el parian" in a wedding shop almost at the corner southwest of this place.

I am half nochistlense, but I am misinformed. I hope you can find better help.

Don't forget to taste a good "plato de birria" some "gorditas con papas, sopes, pozole" and an icecream sitting at "el jard?n". There are "carnitas" and "pollos asados" but don't know how nochistlenses are they.

P.D. Almost forgot "las micheladas"

P.D.2 I think the church you said is "el templo de San Jos?"

Hi Elysia!

About Guadalajara!

The places they told you are great, if you can stay at "El centro hist?rico" you can walk all of it.

It has a few of streets for tourism and walking called "La palza tapat?a" between catedral and "El instituto cultural Caba?as", there is too "El mercado de San Juan De Dios" with lots of food and "artesan?as" there are not problems by the day. By the night are some streets litle insecure, but you will know it before you in in they. Is not too bad, just is better to avoid the risk.

A good place to hear mariachis is "el parian" at Tlaquepaque, it is about 15 minutes by car from the center of Guadalajara. There are artesan?as too.

Another place for artesan?as is "El tianguis de Tonal?" The trafic is terrific, but if you have time, it worth it.

Zapopan has "La basilica" if you want to visit "La generala" (La virgen de Zapopan)

Most of the recent insecure problems in Guadalajara are with "los c?rteles" between they selfs. Practically you don't notice it if you don't see the news.

Hi Elysia,
I just visited the beautiful city of Guadalajara last month and stayed at the Hotel de Mendoza at the recommendation of Mickey, another NR member. The hotel was perfectly located in the heart of the historic district and across the street from El Teatro Delgollado, where my friend and I attended a marvelous symphonic concert. Directly across from the Teatro is a large plaza which has all kinds of things going on all the time. Surrounding the plaza are various municipal buildings with paintings, murals, and interesting historic displays, & the Regional Museum. At the end of the plaza is the gorgeous Cathedral. And across from the cathedral, and also to the left of it, are two plazas which have live music and are great places to people watch.
A must see is the Instituto Cultural Cabanas, located at the end of the street (a pleasant walk about 1/4 mile) which is to the right of the Teatro, as you face it. This is a world heritage site which has probably the greatest, most amazing Orozco mural on the ceiling. Of course, shoppers enjoy going to Tlaquepaque
We never witnessed any problems and found everyone to be very helpful & friendly. You should have a wonderful time. I will be thinking of you and wishing I was back.

I'm glad to hear that Guadalajara is still beautiful. With what we hear up here about Mexico, we wonder what places we have been to there are like now.

Back in the late 60s and early 70s we would go see my husband's aunt in Mexico City and we would take side trips to see pre-columbian ruins and the pyramids out of town, also to Cuernavaca where Cortez had a castle, and to Acapulco. In Guadalajara we too enjoyed a concert and the other art venues. I do recall lying on a bench in some building to better enjoy the mural on the ceiling. We didn't visit Tlaquepaque, but when I was younger my father did take us there on one of their trips.

I had never paid attention to the missing years since most of my research
was in Lagos. After looking at the content of the volumes I see that the
marriages from January 1690 to August 1729. The missing 39 years of
marriages would definitely have had a lot of good information. The volume
of Información Matrimonial 1693-1699 has the years 1702 to 1729 starting
with image 412

should attempt to find something there.

This is just a heads up to anyone doing research in Nochistlan but specific to film # 226675, Bautismos 1870-1873, it's full of errors, listing the wrong names or surnames at least 20-30 % of the time so make sure to double check off of other records the surnames of the grandparents or even for that matter of the parents. Too many mistakes to list!!
I wish I could write and notify someone to make the corrections but I guess I'm at least 140 years too late.

I don't believe it was the priests that filled out the records but a scribe.. I have also found many mistakes in Jerez records with transfering parents and grandparents or just plain wrong.. but remember most of the time for baptisms anyway the Mother was not there so people are guessing or she died and they never really knew who the grandparents were.  I've also seen records where the words ran together so someone who could not read was obviously copying them without knowing where they break to form a word.
just my 2 cents worth.

Are you saying that the priest when recording these vital records
made these errors or are these errors LDS input errors?

Can you give one example...?

Linda,

Do you think the actual preparation of the records were done before the actual ceremony or during/after... ?

As in my own Portuguese ancestry research...
Over 70% of parents/grandparents/godparents could not read nor write...they were at the mercy of these vital records being recorded correctly...but we have found that not to be the case, thankfully it's the exception and not the norm...

Thank you Alicia for the heads-up/reminder that some records do have errors...

Pat you ask a good question but I've never heard and don't remember how it was done when my kids were baptized?  I would swear someone in the old records just took notes and put them in their pocket and wrote them into the records later.. I've learned it usually takes more than one record to be sure of the names involved. Like you I've found most of my lines could not read or write, especially the women in Zacatecas, Michoacan and Jalisco. I do also think the marriage information records were not always correct when they say someone could not write. Since our families never saw the records there was no one to make corrections.
Pat I'm not sure if you have family from Jerez but I did just update my files on Rootsweb. com yesterday.  File name is Mexico then go to the index to see if any of your Corbera/Corvera lines are there.

Pat I forgot to add that I have started adding a ~ at the top of records of people I am related too.  The files cover so many years I very often forget how and who I'm related too.  It's amazing now that I'm doing that I can really see how often the same families married into the same lines for so many decades.

Linda,

Sounds like a great idea. You're so right, with many names in a data base, it's so easy to forget if one is relate or not.

I have used (mt) and (ydna) next to a direct line ancestor's name, it helps when viewing a data base listing of all individuals.

Linda in Everett...

Thank you so much for your added comments. When my daughter was baptized, we had to make arrangements prior to the actual ceremony, and then after the ceremony the priest signed the certificate. That signed copy was then given to us for our records. Sadly, Grandparents were not included. That was in 1969 in California.

I'll check out your Rootsweb site... I appreciate your input! This Corbera/Corvera line has become very frustrating, but I'm determined to figure it out... ;-)...

Pat,

The errors I speak of are entry or recording errors created by the scribe or the priest, I have no way of knowing who it was. Here's a case where they spelled the first name wrong for the maternal grandfather. See the 3rd entry on the bottom left, for Las Pilas, for Maria Clara, hija legitima

The maternal grandfather's name is Procopio Gonzales but instead it states Refugio Gonzales. I know his name because it's listed on the birth record of 4 of her other siblings and I can go on and on with so many other entry errors. I was so wishing I could call someone and tell them, you made a mistake, but then I realized  I was over 140 years too late.                    Alicia, San Jose, Ca

Sorry, forgot the link, here's the link to the  record noted below; https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-15670-42583-14?cc=1410092&wc…

Here's another error, the entry is for the rancho named"Duranes"2nd to the left, Jose Roman, it lists his mother as Bonifacia Muños, it should be Bonifacia Macias. Bonifacia Macias' father was Nazario Macias and her mother was Zeferina Muños. I know this because I have been tracking this family and I have 6 other siblings listed for Jose Roman or Jose Ramon. He gave Bonifacia her mother's last name instead of her father's last name.    https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-15670-42753-14?cc=1410092&wc…

And I have so many other errors noted on this film.

Too many mistakes to
list!!
I wish I could write and notify someone to make the corrections but I guess I'm at least 140 years too late.

WOW! not even close...must have been a bad day for that priest or scribe.

I had a situation where the father's last name was recorded as being Cordero, but his father, the child's paternal grandfather's surname was recorded as Corbera...Guess the father could have been a Cordero with a step-father of Corbera

I have found many transcription errors of LDS input... Carrera for Corbera - Cabrera for Corbera when the document clearly has the correct spelling of Corbera... and the list goes on...

When humans are involved there will be errors...but so thankful that we can actually view many of these records online now... Many "thanks," to LDS...

Errors not only 140 years ago... on Tino's birth record Oakland CA his mother's maiden surname of Perez was entered as Paris... and my in-laws could read and write in Spanish and English, but they didn't catch that error...

Very interesting this quest we find ourselves on in the name of family history research... ;-))

Are you saying that the priest when recording these vital records
made these errors or are these errors LDS input errors?

Can you give one example...?

Pat,

Here's another error in this film. It shows the Abuelo Paterno as Cresencio Gutierres when it should be Cresencio Guerrero, the spouse of Cornelia Madero of the rancho called Sombreretillo. For this family line I have tracked 277 individuals in my database and were it not for the data I have on file, I would not know this was another entry error by the parish scribe or priest.

Alicia,

I have a question, once a child is baptized as being "hija natural," does that "status," continue on if and when that child marries?

Tino's maternal grandmother was baptized as being "hija natural," but on her "Informacion Matrimonial," she was noted as being "hija legitima."

Was that because by the time she married her parents were married?

Why do some people have pages of "informacion matrimonials," while others have very limited marriage information? Was it based on the wealth/status of the individuals involved and their ability to pay?

Pat, I don't know the answer to this question, but it's very good question. Maybe someone who's more knowledgable than me can answer it?

my grandmother was hija natural but 20 years later she names her Father on her marriage record, she even took his surname even though the man never married her Mother.

Thank you Alicia and Linda,

I'm beginning to believe that it's best when one reaches adulthood to just claim "hija legitima," status... too difficult to explain the other. In Tino's ancestor's situation, she was bapatized as "hija natural," but the name of the father as well as that of the A.P. and A.M. were all mentioned. I did locate the marriage record for her parents, and they did marry after she was born...so by the time she married her parents were married and alive...

Thank you for your comments/added information.

I have seen situations in which the parents of a child are married a year
or two before the marriage of the child. It makes one think the reason the
parents married was so the child could be listed as a legitimate child in
the marriage record. I take it that the baptism of the person you speak has
the names of the parents even though she was an hija natural. Is that the
case?

Armando,

The situation that you mentioned I had never thought to check that out, but I will do so. I have come across a couple of direct line ancestors that married after the birth/baptism of the their children. I will see if that marriage may have happened shortly before the marriage of one of their offspring.

Yes, the child's baptism record of (30 Nov 1871) noted as "hija natural," mentioned the mother, the father, as well as the A.P. and A.M. The parents were married 22 May 1873, almost 18 months after the Nov 1871 baptism.

Thank you for adding to this thread...

To follow up on the errors on film # 226675 for bautismos de Nochistlan, there were many entries made showing the wrong year. Film started with December of 1870 and continued into 1871 and suddenly they reversed back to 1870 which I knew was a mistake and this link has an entry by the bishop or obispo stating that they should be for 1871.

The priest must have been dyslexic or had ADHD

Enrique
