Hello Welester
Where did you go? Coahuila or Nuevo Leon? Where did you see the Indian paintings? I have a friend in Monclova that gives me arrowheads when I go to visit. He finds them around the area.
I am looking at a book published in 1930-CATALOGO DE PASAJEROS A INDIAS, 1509-1533. Someone sent it to me to see if I wanted it. What do you think? I do not have these years.
Welester, nice hearing from you! Have you seen any of our mutual friends?
If you run into them, say hello; look forward to seeing everyone again. I am going to call Areceli. I haven't called her this week.
Bye
Mickey

For your amusement

(This isn't really genenalogy - but it is a FAMILY story)
This past Saturday, my daughter dropped off her three oldest (ages 7, 5, and 2) for us to babysit. After playing outside for a while, the two older ones decided they wanted to watch a video - Disney's "Three Caballeros" (Donald Duck, Joe Carrioca, and ??? - I can't remember) - I haven't been able to figure out why they like this so - they have seen this a dozen times over the past 18 months. Anyway, after the movie, they wanted a snack, and while they were sitting around the table, Joey, the 7 yr old, started howling. I asked what all the noise was for - he said he was pretending to be a singing mariachi. This is what you must know about Joey's heritage: he is a combination of Irish, Lithuanian, Scots, English, Native American, Mexican ... y solo Dios sabe que mas. And yes, Joey has been exposed to mariachis in live performance, so he knew what he was trying to do.

The Mendoza Family in 1500's Mexico

I heard the Mendoza family comes from a long line of Castilian Nobility is this true? There were dukes, counts, lords, princes, etc. They also owned the Guadalajara Palace of Mendoza and descend from Fernando I? Is all this true.

Comment

There are Mendoza families in Spain with different origins. It is true that
one of those families was, and is, one of the most prominent of Spain (that
of the Dukes of the Infantado - the palace in Guadalajara is called "Palacio
de los Duques del Infantado"), Marquis of Santillana and several other
titles. To that family belonged don Antonio de Mendoza, 1st viceroy of New
Spain. I don't recall at this point their connection(s) with the Spanish
royalty (but I'm certain that there are several) and it is true that the
ancestry of the Spanish royal family can be traced back to Pedro, Duke of
Cantabria, who lived in the VI century.

Directamente, a
(www.mcu.es/archivos/index.html
>).

bandos contendientes.

c)Deportados españoles a campos de concentración nazis. Aporta

a)Temporales.

Immigrant stories

Is there a collection of immigration/immigrant stories here on the NUESTROS RANCHOS page/site? (If so, how do I go about finding them?) Stories of how an ancestor or parent migrated to the U.S.; how and when did they travel?; why did they come to the U.S.?; how long did it take?; did they come alone or in a group?; where in the U.S. did they eventually settle?

Natalie,

No, your idea is not hare-brained Arturo already has a file called "Poems and Cuentos" that is for poems so far, but I'm sure he could open another file for "Immigrants' Stories". I love to read such stories. It fleshes out for me what the stories of my own immigrant ancestors might have been being that I never knew any but my father and he never talked about his experiences during the Revolution in Mexico and the trip to the US or his early years here.

I was born in Colorado in 1939 and raised in California, so I don't have the family knowledge that some of the other members have. My mother was American/Nuevo Mexican/Tewa and we were immersed in that culture that had existed there for 400 years and they considered my father's relatives "foreign newcomers". They were always talking about their ancestors, and my father never got a word in edgewise, nor did he want to. He would just shake his head and complain later about the archaic Spanish dialect they spoke that had not kept up with modern Castellan as spoken in Mexico. He was always correcting my mother's Spanish and ours, and as a result, I stopped trying to speak Spanish. He didn't allow us make-up or bright colors, either. I think he would have loved to have seen us at home only or wearing black rebozos on our heads when we went out. He was very provincial.

Since Ancestry.com came out with the Border Crossings database, I have found so much to flesh out some of the story of my father's people. In the Border Crossing database, and Historical Newspapers, and Obituaries, and WWI and WWII Registrations I have learned so much about my immigrant ancestors who are all gone now. For instance, I did not know that before settling in Colorado for 25 years, they had first gone to Mogollon, NM or to Glazier TX in the early part of the 20th C. and both of those are now ghost towns. I wonder what they did there, what life was like (pretty rough, I imagine, but with family around, it was bearable).

A really good story about one family's saga of immigration and what drove some people to leave Mexico is a book called, "Rain of Gold" by Victor Villasenor. I also have a book called "Como Viven Los Mexicanos en los Estados Unidos" published privately in Mexico in the 1920s that my husband's aunt gave me almost 50 years ago.

So, it is a good idea, Natalie. I look forward to hearing everyone's stories.

I think it would be interesting to compare and contrast the immigrant stories. (Or is this just a hare-brained idea??)

I have a short bio of my father's journey from Mexico to the USA which I sent
to the group on 30 July 2006. I guess it is in the General Genealogy and
History section. I could expand it to include my grandfather and my uncles.
The Estrada family migrated from Etzatlan to Guadalajara and then to Mexico
City and finally to Monterrey.

Hello fellow Ranchos members...

I will be in Mexico City next Thursday through Sunday and am hoping to spend most of the day Friday at the Archivo General de la Nacion. I cannot promise that I will have time, but if someone has a specific document for which they have exact repository (i.e. collection name, folio number and page number, etc.) that they would like me to look up I will try to do my best.

Wish I were going with you!! Have a great time! Spend the rest of the time going to the old book stores, I believe the street is Vensuela? Where Porrua is...I guess you know about that, huh?

Be safe,

Hello fellow Ranchos members...

I will be in Mexico City next Thursday through Sunday and am hoping to spend
most of the day Friday at the Archivo General de la Nacion. I cannot promise
that I will have time, but if someone has a specific document for which they
have exact repository (i.e. collection name, folio number and page number, etc.)
that they would like me to look up I will try to do my best.

I hope everybody's research is going well.

Comment

I just got back from Mexico City this morning and wanted to report a bit on my trip, or at least the part of it related to my research...

The Archivo General de la Nacion is located just behind the Legislative Palace in the Ampliacion Penitenciaria. The name comes from the fact that the Archive building used to be a jail. The architecture is impressive and the layout quite amenable to an archive as each wing of the star-shaped building holds a different collection and the documents are placed in "cells" so that they are isolated in case of fire, etc.

I have been told, however, that the building, due to its age and the construction materials is very humid, which is detrimental to the documents and the government has been for some time now considering moving the archive to a new purpose-built building.

To register as a researcher, I merely wrote a letter outlining my research interests and the purpose of my research that included my full name, address, phone number and email address. This is a basic requirement in order to obtain a researcher card. Presenting the letter and an official identification document, the registration process took about 20 minutes.

In order to handle any document, researchers are required to wear gloves and a face mask. I bought some latex gloves and a face mask at a pharmacy, but I would recommend you find some nice, well-fitting cotton gloves instead of the latex ones, which are very uncomfortable to work in and difficult to take on and off as is needed to switch back and forth between computer and document.

You are allowed only loose leaf paper, a pencil and a computer. I did not take a computer, but would recommend it as for me it is faster to type than handwrite transcriptions.

The archive has digitized versions of many colonial document collections including Tierras and Inquisicion (probably not coincidentally, from the LDS fimiling of these collections). Unfortunately, the films include multiple volumes and expedientes with no markers to differentiate where one starts and the other ends. The image search engine leads one to the correct digitized film but not to the correct place on the film where the document resides so it is quite difficult to use this service.

The Archive has a photocopy service that will do up to 30 copies in a same day service or larger copy jobs in a two-day turnaround at 1 peso per copy (about 10 cents). Unfortunately all orders have to go in before 2:30 pm which makes the day short since the archive opens only at 8:30 am. I meant to inquire whether one could take a digital camera and photograph documents but forgot. Does anyone know?

It was an amazing experience to handle documents from the 1500s and 1600s in my hands. The documents I saw were in pristine shape and very legible. The paper is very high quality--thus their long life.

Unfortunately, due to the time constraints, I was unable to look up all of the documents that I would have liked to see. I did get a number of very important documents related to the Tlaxcaltec colony in Colotlan. One is from a visit by a a Capitan Urdinola in 1617 and another set is a collection of the documents related to the rights and privileges granted by the Crown to the families that was compiled in 1712 in order to defend these rights and privileges from the local government that was trying to take them away.

Bon Voyage, Arturo,

I wish you could help their techs make their Guia more user-friendly. they need someone with your expertise. I can't even bring up the search fields.

Esparza Genealogy

I found a source that has Lope Ruiz de Esparza lineage going back to 1230 to James First of England. Im not sure if its correct or not. It said he is descended through the Beumonts near FRance to JAmes I.

Comments

Comment

I don't know about James I, but I do know that a book I found at the
Benson Rare Book Library (UT Austin), mentioned ties to the Beaumonts.
However, they were never clear as to whether or not there was a
relationship. As far as I understood it, a Lope de Esparza (not sure
which generation) performed some act of heroism or fought next to the
king (Beaumont), and the king in turn rewarded him with a coat of arms
and a casa solar.

I don't know the name of the book off hand, but can check at home.
What is the name of your source?

The Beaumonts of Navarre lineage is very well documented and has been
published in several books. I have some information on them and never seen
any connection with Lope Ruiz de Esparza. Plus James I of England lived
around 1600 making impossible that Lope would be his descendant. The
Beaumonts are descendants of St Louis IX of France.

Inaki Garrido, Spanish historian and genealogist, is about to publish a book
on the Beaumonts which may contain Lope if he was connected to them.

Would you kindly let us know which source is that?

Thank you

My trip to Archivo General de la Nacion

Excellent Arturo ,

A friend of mine Arq. Jose Garza Carrillo has been there several times and has bought film there , he's promised to take me along the next time he goes . I will let you all know when I do .

Wow............Arturo, I could feel the excitement at having the opportunity to go to Mexico City to handle documents that are several hundred years old, rich with meaning, with content and with history.

Hmmm, maybe someday I can make it, even if every time I visit Mexico City I get very ill, with the altitude and the smog rather than enjoying the city I spend my time vomiting and trying to breathe. I take two steps and stop to catch my breath etc. On second thought I don't think I can do it again.

I'm happy for you Arturo!!

A most important trip

I made a trip to my ancestor´s town. I claim it to be very fortunated because is the result of a bunch of diggins. I did found a hidden treasure: the getting a hug from my mother´s side of long time absence. This means, my fellows group, I just met two of my mother´s siblings and a bunch of cousins.

My mother was raised by a relative or friend of the family (her mother died from giving birth) and added to that her father never had an affective relation with she, so me and my cousins, nor one in the family, had any affective relation with them, not even close. This spring took iniciative and went to seek for them. It was a great treat, came bach happy to the full, I still can´t put it in the right words. I invite you to look in my just added album.

Yolanda, I do have ancestors who lived in Zapotlan El Grande but in earlier years mostly except for the Rolon family. My lines are Mendez and Gutierrez but they married into families that stayed there after mine moved on to Tamazula de Gordiano, Jalisco. One line my Mendez ancestor married into was the Sanchez de la Mejorada who dropped the de la Mejorada and became Sanchez, that's why your message caught my eye. My research is earlier, late 1600's to 1800 when they left Zapotlan El Grande. When you get the baptism record I will be happy to check and see if I have anything for the earlier generations. I have records from Zapotlan El Grande I haven't recorded yet in my files.

Well the genealogies he covers in depth are: De la Torre, Robles,
Correa, Sanchez, Nava, Gonzalez, Murillo, Carols, Rodriguez, Mejia,
Zuniga, and Salazar. Not Gutierrez. I went through and tried to find
Maria Ignacia de la Torre (1780) but the genealogies are very very very
user unfriendly and it would take a major research session (maybe a few
days worth) to search each page. Sorry,

Joseph, thank you very much, you've done more than enough. I do appreciate you checking it for me.

Do you know that there are 10 Gomez de Aguirres in the IGI section of Family Search ? They start in 1698 and go to 1793--all but one are in Jalisco.

Martin Del Campo in Guadalajara

I finally found some records for my Martin del Campo ancestors from
microfilms I ordered through the LDS church. In Film No. 1950892, Deaths
1941, in the civil register for the municipio of Guadalajara in Guadalajara,

Corrine:

Congratulations and thank you for sharing that information with the group.

Your message brought up something interesting that I found when looking at civil records. Up until recently I had stuck to church records since they are pretty complete and very good for the most part in the region on which I am focused (Colotlan, Tlaltenango and Totatiche).

However, the church records for Villa Guerrero, a new parrish founded around 1920 are not filmed (and I am told were destroyed in the Cristero War). So I went to look at the civil records (which survived since they were copied and sent off to Guadalajara--as is customary for civil records).

I found in those records that many of my ancestors are described as indigenas, even when the church records describe their ancestors as mestizos or espanoles. I had thought that after independence they had done away completely with the caste system and as such there would be no more race information in the records, which is the case with church records for the most part...

However, my find and your information confirms that they continued to keep this information in the civil records. I wonder if they generically refered to everyone as mestizo mexicano as a way of affirmatively erasing the previous caste designations? I wonder why they would designate my ancestors as indigenas if that were the case, unless perhaps as part of the Revolution ideology that was considered a good thing.

Comment

Arturo,

I don't know. This is the first record I have come upon that designated race as mestizo mexicano. I have done most of my research on the paternal line of my mother's family, in Chihuahua. In civil records from that part of Mexico, dating back to 1861, I have come across "indigenas" and "mexicanas no indigenas." I always took the first to mean they were an indigenous tribe member and the second meant they were Mexicans that were not indigenous tribe members nor had any indigenous ancestry.

Ignacio Alviso race description in marriage document

Hoping someone might be able to help with the script in this document. I feel as if it is like Ojo de Agua
revisited! The below link is the document that I am pretty sure is the marriage document for the great grandparents of Julian Alviso. It is the top document, the marriage of Jose Ignacio Albiso and Juana Maria Gonzalez. Ignacio's race is described as Indio, but there is another word after Indio. I suspect it is either Savorio or Lavorio, but I am not sure. I am sorry but, I do not have the complete film, so I cannot provide other records for comparison. Could it possibly be the Indian tribe? Does anyone recognize the script or have a clue what this would mean? Thanks for any help!

Maureen,

It's been my understanding that this means the person was indigenous
and did farmwork - as in "labor" which means farmwork and "laborio"
being the adjective form. I realize that you noted the script uses
a 'v' rather than a 'b', but these letters have been quite
interchangeable in most records.

To my knowledge, it did not have anything to do with the name of a
tribe.

Hope this is helpful.

Connie:

You are correct about the term "laborio" meaning farm worker. Though I don't think it is necessarily in the sense of the person being a farm hand per se as much as being a farmer, i.e. labor means field (of crops) so laborio would simply mean that the person had a labor to work on.

From what I can gather the term was used to differentiate "civilized" indigenous people who had adopted sedentary life of farming as opposed to "uncivilized" or "chichimeca" indigenous people who were nomadic, or simply subsistence farmers/hunters.

Lord of Esparza (Senor de Esparza)

Does anyone know Lope Ruiz de Esparza's genealogy I need help. I found a source it said his father or grandfather (too many named Lope) Was Lord of Esparza in the city of Esparza they had lived in the Palace of the Esparza.

David,
According to documents I've seen, this is true. He is said to have
been Lord of the palaces of Esparza and Zariquiegui in Navarra.
Somehow, I can't remember without my notes, his father/grandfather was
also supposed to be allied with or close to the Beaumonts of Navarra.

I have info on this family only as far as his grandparents, I believe,
in the late 1490s. It's what's been available from Jaime Holcombe's
submissions to LDS.

I visited the Archbishop's research office in Pamplona in 2003, but
the time allotted is so minimal that you really have to visit for a
few days straight to really find anything. I did find one of the
parishes his family visited, but I did not find anything concrete on
him or close family.

Hope this helps...or at least piques your interest a bit more. :-)

Thank you Maria. This is incredible. I have traced about nine generations
of this family back to Sevilla, to Nicolas and some of his first cousins.
I plan on buying this book. I just read "The Encomenderos of New Spain
1521-1555" and it had a few good nuggets for me. Please contact me if you think
you can expand your Flores de la Torre branch.

Charles,

I notice you said you read "The Encomenderos of New Spain 1521-55. Where were you able to get it. I am still trying to get some information on Diego Delgado and Isabel Sorano. I know he goes back a good bit, probably in Zacatecas, but it has been a stonewall there.

Thanks for any information you can give me.

Juanita,

I purchased this book through barnesandnobles.com (maybe it was amazon.com).
Anyhow, those names do not appear in this book...sorry. It contains the 506
known encomenderos of that period. It also mentions other pertinent persons.
There are many books I want that are out of print but this one I got used
for under $20.

Charles,

Many thanks for your prompt reply! Will just have to perservere.

Of all the people that communicate via the ranchos site I have only met one person (Josie)
that had connections with the people that came with the De Escandon colonizer, and we matched! There are many people looking for missing kin that moved West, California, New Mexico, etc., but almost none for people that came to NE MEXICO.

I am looking for the parents of JOSEPH MARIA TAMAYO Y LUNA, born in REVILLA, TAMPS,. in 1738, which was long before REVILLA was "founded" in 1750. He died there also, in 1798. I have all the censuses from Revilla up to 1881, but they are not in any of them. I found JOSEPH MARIA, in his older age, and I found record of his death in the
Corpus Christ, Texas, reseach library, but not his parents.

I am really desperate! Thanks for listening.

I have yet to trace my Luna line. I think it connects to my father's
cousins. I heard him speak of them as a family branch that came to S. Cal at about
the same time as our Flores family 1920'S. I have a couple of names that he
wrote down ten years ago. My uncle ( 83 yrs old) says that Capt. Luna of the
''Roughriders" is rumored to be related to our family. I read that he came
from an old N. Mexico family. It does not seem to me that he would then be
related but????
As I turn to other families in my genealogy i will see if we connect.
It seems that genealogy is a life long search.
Buena suerte;

To my "privileged" Prima Josie,

Received your Swiss choc hug, will be there another couple of weeks - or so. Well, exxxcccussseeemmme!

I, too, am frustrated with this equally elusive couple that I know for a fact were in Revilla in 1738, even though that is about 9 or 10 years before the villa was "founded" in 1750. I wish i knew where they came from, as they did not come with Vicente Guerra.

Please, please, continue to have fun!!!
