the site is very very very user-unfriendly. best I can do is offer these
instructions vague instructions: http://aer.mcu.es/sgae/

okay here is my try [EVERYONE please fill in an possible missing steps
to the below]:

1) Being very careful to only use the latest version of Microsoft
Internet Explorer go to: http://aer.mcu.es/sgae/index_aer.jsp

2) then click on "Alta de usario" Fill out the form making sure to
scroll down to the place where you pick your login and password.

3) click "Acceptar" and a pop up window will open with your "Tarjeta
National de Investigador" number. Write this number down.

4) and click "ok"

5) click on "Salir"

6) Now go back to the home page: http://aer.mcu.es/sgae/index_aer.jsp

7) and put in your new login and password in and click on "Aceptar"

8) Now the home page opens and when you go to use the search engine for
the first time you get this message: " AYUDA Si usted accede a AER por
Proceda a
Gracias. "

9) So at the right top click on "Nuevo Tema" and then fill out that page
of info requested and click on "Guardar."

10) on the next page click on "Volver" then you should on a page where
it has that info you just filled out on a single line and a Magnifying
glass symbol on the left. Now when you see this you are ready to go.

11) click on the Magnifying glass and put the keywords you are searching
for as well as any other exact data and click "Buscar." This site is
just a little slow so when you click on something give it just a little
time to give you the results. Multiclicking on things will only slow you
down. On the few pages you might find that are actually available as a
scanned view you will need certain additional software plug-ins. When I
clicked on the Camera Icon indicating o! ne of these scanned views the
site asked if I wanted the plug-in added to my computer. I said yes and
then a second message came up for another plug-in to be added. I said
yes and after that I could clearly view the few I tried to see. Well
this is my effort at how to view the site. I'm sure there is a lot more
that can be learned in using the site so please do share what you learn
in your exploration.

Genealogía de Nochistlán-Book Location: was-Diego Delgadillo (long)

Now if there only was an index available:(
I already have the one capitulo, but my family might be covered in others.

The San Antonio Library kindly photocopied capitulo 58 for me. I'm sure they would do so again.

I would be more than happy to scan and upload the index for the Vazquez y

stated before, I only have the index, and not the actual publication.

Telling it Like it Is

Since I still cannot sort out the relationship of my husband's gg-grandfather to the widowed man his mother married long after his and his brothers' births (no father mentioned in the records), I was surprised when looking for my father's ancestors that sometimes the fathers of "hijos naturales" were mentioned (exposed?) in the records even when the father was married to someone else. I kind of suspect that in some cases a woman who had children out of wedlock had been impregnated by a married man and could not marry him until he was "free" ("viudo" after his previous wife died) to be made an honest woman of.

I just posted a picture of a map of the district of Jerez Zacatecas which I got in 2003. Some of the old names have been changed but the information seems good. I posted it in the map section. This map was actually on the back of a T-shirt but it was clear and large enough for my old eyes to read.

Hi Joseph, I bought the T-shirt with the map on the back in Jerez in 2003. I bought the T-shirt as a souviner for Gabe Gutierrez, a mentor in genealogy for me but took the photo of the map before sending it to him. Wish I had gone to the museum across from the church while I was there but when you are guests you have to do what the hosts like.. they thought the museum was boring...

Help on "hijo natural"

I have learned over the years doing family research is that certain words are used differently in different centuries and locales. For example, people who lived in remote areas without a resident priest didn't wait for one to show in order to "marry". The church did not see any reason to blame people for uniting and having children before seeing a priest for the church ritual. Hence the term "hijo natural" came into use. Once the locale has a resident priest the use of "hijo natural" disappears. I have seen the priests use "hijo ilegitimo" or "hijo bastardo" to identify the child whose parents failed to observe the "rules". I believe it is presumptuous to call a child a bastard if the "hijo natural" label is the result of a priest not being nearby. Some communities went longer than a year without the services of a priest.

David you gave a wonderful answer here. . .helped me and gave me the
perspective that i knew was missing from the previous discussion. You
are absolutely right about being careful to lean toward being
judgemental in Spanish to English. We should carry that a step further
and say to use this advice when going from English to English as words
can easily be understood to have alternate interpretations. All the
above being thought of as communications in the 21st century. . .now
imagin the communication differences in the 20th century, the 19th
century, the 18th century, the 17th century, the 16th century! And how
about the differences in time ALONG with usuages from place to place
from circumstance to circumstance. I was listening to a podcast
yesterday about a science teacher talking about coaching a soccer team
that would do poorly when the catholic members of the team went to their
religious studies, but would bounce back during the second half of
certain games when they came back from their class and the cheer was
"Here Come the Catholics." In this Teachers family the phrase "Here Come
the Catholics" took on the personal meaning of when situations were
tough but help was on the way. But unless we know and study all the
circumstances and history we wouldn't know the meaning of this phrase
and how much less would we for our ancestors and the situations they
found themselves in.

Thanks David. . .we should be fast to study, fast to research, slow to
conclude.

joseph

ps: David you aplogized for rambling. Surely you jest. . .if I can
accuse you of anything it would be of not sharing enough of your great
points of view. Keep them coming hermano we need your input to balance
our points of view.

One of my ancestors is labeled as "hijo ilicito" and "hijo legitimo" in the same baptism record. The parents were married after the birth in an outlying area. One of my uncles was labeled illegitimate in 1912 New Mexico because his parents married civilly before marrying in a church ceremony.

Priests found children on their doorsteps and window sills. In 1870's Aguas Calientes, Ags. I found a record of a priest who answered a knock on his door late one night. A woman thrust a child in his arms and ran away. When he looked at the bundle in his arms he saw the baby covered in blood. The umbilical cord had been cut too short. The child died in his arms that night.

Hijo Legitimo/Hijo Natural

I too have a case that has me wondering just what is Hijo Legitimo vs Hijo Natural:

My husband's great-great grandfather Ysac Cervantes gave as his father's name Encarnacion Cervantes in the baptism records of all his children and in his marriage record. This made it extremely difficult for me to find Ysac and Encarnacion. After backtracking and some help from Arturo, I discovered that the Cervantes name came from Ysac's mother Dorotea Cervantes who did not marry Encarnacion Talamantes until after Ysac's birth and that of his two brothers. Encarnacion and Dorotea were not married until July 10, 1839, three years after the birth of Ysac and six years after the birth of Ysac's brother Sotero. The Talamantes I believe were part Indian from Tlaltenango, and the Cerbantes' were espanoles from Encarnacion de Diaz.

I have been surprised by the high percentage of unwed mothers. I thought there would be far fewer in such a Catholic country as Mexico, especially a hundred, or two hundred years ago.

I like the term hijo natural. Its not in the least bit insulting, like that awful word that starts with a B. It pains me to see that term, I think its disrespectful of the mother and the child.

I've also seen the term adoptado in many birth records. Some list both the bioligical parents and the adoptive parents who both parties agreed would be the actual care giving parents.

I'll give you any odds that we ALL have at least one hijo, or hija natural in our ancestry.
So don't cast any stones when you live in a glass house!

Comment

Dear Ernie:

Cases of hijos naturales were/are quite common, including the spanish/new
spanish nobility.
The first viceroy of México, don Antonio de Mendoza had an illegitimate
child, María de Mendoza.
A case well known lately is of don Leandro de Borbón y Ruiz Moragas who is
an illegitimate son of the King Alfonso XIII.
I know of cases when the mother leaves the father and her child. I know of
one case that occurred about 80 years ago within the new spanish nobility
involving strong noble families of political influence. There were a child,
una hija natural, the family of the mother sent her to spain and left the
father with the child. These days, no one cares about the "escandalo".

I doubt there is still people that think there is anything wrong with it.
And you're right, in our ancestry, there will always be cases like this.

Kind regards,

Erik

I have a couple of ancestresses who were listed as h.n. in their
children's birth record and had "padre no conocido" for the paternal
grandfather. For example: my ancestor Juan Josef Zezario Saldivar and
his wife Antonia Rossalia de Llamas are the parents of Narcisco
Saldivar and various sisters. The birth records list the child (hijo
legitimo de JJZS and ARdLl). Paternal grandparents: Josef Saldivar
and Maria de la Luz Ortis; maternal grandparents: Augustina de Llamas
and padre no conocido.

What a lost opportunity to find MORE ancestors. Augustina had several
children with pnc after that. I wonder why? I hate to think that a
woman in 18th century Mexico had loose knickers.:( Marge:)

Marge,

You are so funny. Loose knickers--you must have gotten that expression from your Scot mum. I guess my husband's ggg-grandmother Dorotea may have had them too; she was the second wife, perhaps she had children from the man she married (who was a "viudo") after having three sons "natural" while he was still married (but who in the margin of their birth records someone wrote "h. lego"), if that man really fathered her children. Could be, no, since there was rarely any divorce in Mexico in the 1700s? How frustrating this all is. I wonder if we will ever be able to sort it out.

Another category of birth could be the product of rape.

My great grandfather, Jesus Porras, was such a product.
His mother, 14 year-old Maria de las Nieves Porras, was raped by the owner of the ranch where her family lived. His name was Jose Ysac Gallardo Chaves.

Now you would think such a child would be an hijo natural. But the rapist was so impressed with my great grandfather that he legitized his birth, recognized him legally as his son, entitled to inherit his estate. My grandpa went on to be mayor, and found Pastas Porras.

Just the same, no one in my family has ever borne the name Gallardo!

For 148 years the name Porras has refused to be eradicated.

Maria de las Nieves Porras is still honored in our family, as is Petronilla Moctezuma.
Two wonderful women that I respect.

Comment

In my family, I think rape might have been the case with a second
ancestress (Maria del Refugio Gomez) whose daughter, Petra Gomez, was
my grandmother's grandmother. Petra had "padre no conocido" on her
side. But in Agustina de Llamas' case, I think it was just a matter of
(as my husband puts it) "calzon flojo." Of course, all of the above is
pure speculation on my part and we'll probably never know the truth
about these events. I still have two or three other earlier ancestors

Hello Marge:

In my research of women from the Victorian Era, "loose knickers" was not a major factor of women bearing children.
In Catholic dominated countries there were "hijos de la Iglesia", children fathered by clergy.

As late as the mid 1900's, there were "secrets" being told of clergy taking a young "bride to be", and physically demonstrating the union she would experience with her husband. Also, in many communities, the clergy were held in high esteem, and some mothers thought it was an honor to offer their young daughters to clergy for their personal pleasure.

Women from Africa, in the US, and throughout the world, were slaves to the landowners, endured many hardships, and bore children as did their counterparts in religious domains.

I always thought "hijo de la iglesia" meant they were orphaned and left at a church run orphanage or convent. I've seen many of them listed and the idea that thier fathers were priests is awful! This is something I never contemplated. Guess I've been naive.

Hi, Helyn,
When I was an adult and learned that such things occurred (priests
fathering children or single women having children) I was truly
surprised. I was incredibly naive (and continue to be in some

Regarding the issue of children born out of wedlock, I agree with Helyn that
"loose knickers" was not the major reason for this occurrance. My wife's
maternal grandmother had six children, each with a different father. The
first one was from an unexpected pregnancy when she was very young and
unmarried. To avoid scandal, the family took her to another village where
the child was born. After this, she was, undoubtedly, not prime marriage
material. She is subsequently listed in census records as head of household
with several children. At the time (late nineteenth, early twentieth
centuries) it would have been difficult for a young, single, uneducated
female to survive on her own. Women in her case surely relied on the
temporary support of serial partners that did not marry them for their and
their children's survival. Birth control and abortion were not an option
then, so children inevitably resulted from each temporary relationship.
Padre desconosido predictably appears on the baptismal certificates of these
children.

Births out of wedlock were not at all uncommon in Mexico, particularly in periods when there was demographic upheaval due to disease or war. I ran across a book that plotted historical changes in out of birth wedlocks in Nueva Galicia through colonial history and there were periods in the 17th century when these reached 60 percent of births.

This is true. Rape was not even a crime, at least not prosecutable.

The man who raped my gggrandmother never faced justice.

Women from India were sold into slavery to the Vatican as late as 1968. Sold by their familes to be nuns.

Mis amigas Dominicanas me dicen que todo el pais es producto de rape!

Que cruzan los hombres de Haiti a la Republicana Dominicana para rapturar las mujeres.

Y por eso parecen Africanos los Dominicanos, pero en realidad no son.

My Dominican friends tell me their whole country is a product of rape!
That Haitian men cross the border into the Dominican Repulbic to rape the women.

There must be some basis for this belief, but I think it is more urban legend than anything else.
And a case of systematic racial denial, of course.

I have not been there, but it seems like a major resource. I plan to visit it before my upcoming relocation to San Francisco.

If anyone needs any more cemetery look ups at Resurrection. Calvary or Evergreen, let me know as I am tieing up loose ends in Los Angeles now.

I've decided it's a good idea to record baptism's of children who were expuesto or parents unknown and who baptized them since some of these children were kept and raised as their own. It sometimes explains why I can't find a baptism record in there name since they were not birth children. I guess only dna testing would tell that story!

Just an educated guess. I think (hijo natural) is birth child & (hijo ligitimo) is probably adopted. The 1800s left many children orphans and relatives took children in as their own.

Hi:

Hijo natural: it was term (word) to describe a child that was born out
of a married couple.
At that time existed only the religious wedding, civil weddings started
around 1850 in Mexico.
Some couples at the time of baptised live together but without
matrimony.

Hijo Legitimo: It was the child that born from a religious married
couple.

I hope this help you.

accomplish? Instead of a group researching and sharing information
about ancestors in the Jalisco area of Mexico, would this then morph

I think you are totally misunderstanding what I was suggesting. There is
a difference between "Login In" and the discussion that takes place on
the email distribution lists. I am in no means proposing that if you
don't say something "ONCE A YEAR" on the email discussion list you will
be eliminated from the group. No not the point. I am trying to find an
easy way for me to remove members from the group that are not truely
members. The Log In means you take your "USER NAME" and "PASSWORD" and
use them (log in) on the http://nuestrosranchos.org site.

When you do that it leaves a "signature" of sorts in that I can easily
see that you or anyone has logged into the site. So if a person hasn't
logged in after a year then I'll send them an email asking if they want
to remain members. If they say yes then fine they can remain members as
long as they have met the initial requirements: 1) do your own research
and 2) send in a representative tree showing their connection to our
area of research. BUT if the person never replies or replies with a "Not
Interested" then I'll go ahead and delete their membership.

So unless you want to get a message from me on 01 May 2007 just log in
once. . .you don't have to spend hours researching or anything just log
in. logging in takes about 1 minute and you are finished. In fact If you
log in immediately you will not have to worry about this until 01 May
2008 when the next time after this first time that I will be sending out
emails to people who haven't logged in for over a year.

What do you think is what I said still unclear?

joseph

ps: if you want more discussion about your particular area of research
why not do like I did when I originally started the Yahoo Ranchos. I
knew When I first started I didn't know anything so I decided to
surround myself with other researchers that were researching my area of
research thus originally the yahoo group was for Jalisco and Zacatecas
and then the members decided to add Aguascalientes. So if you go to
Ancestry or Roots web and do a message search for your particular areas
in Jalisco, Zacatecas, and Aguascalientes then find those that are
"Serious" Inquiries. Email those individuals and ask them to consider
membership in the http://nuestrosranchos.org group, But give them a
warning that it is only for those that are serious about their research
and tell them about the requirements of the group. Linda, get active in
finding others you can network with. . .believe me it has been a
blessing for me and my research and I just know that it will be for yours.

Usted es José adecuado. Me disculpo sinceramente. Tenía un día de la
frustración y mi mente sacado en la dirección incorrecta. Éste es uno
de los mejores grupos en la tela y no merece el pettiness en mi email
anterior. Le agradezco por su respuesta paciente. Espero que el resto
del grupo me perdone, también. Linda Romero

I'm thinking of something and would like some feed back on it.

I'm thinking of making it mandatory to login to the actual website once
a year or your membership will expire.

I would think that visiting the website once a year would be something

Yes, Joseph,

I think it is a good idea for people to check the files, gedcoms, etc on the website; why not take advantage of all the information to be found there? Maybe you could also from time to time remind people of what is on the website besides the e-mails. Could you post an index or something like that once in a while? Another group I belong to sends out a "we haven't heard from you in a while" type message.

Wonderful idea, but you should see me, I've got no time for extra
duties. I'm wondering how I'm going to get past the "Big Cut" of 31 Jan
2007. I've been comtemplating how it is going to be possible for me
maintain my current level of involvement in the group as we continue to
get larger and larger. One thing I wasn't counting on when Arturo
suggested building the site was that all the people from Jalisco,
Zacatecas, and Aguascalientes were going to surface and want to be
members. Its simply amazing. Where as there used to be new members join
the Yahoo group a few every month now there is at least double that
maybe even triple.

So even though your idea is wonderful it will have to be one of those
ideas that will only come to fruition if someone else steps up and takes
on a volunteer opportunity.

With most of the groups (not necessarily genealogical) that I participate in, you MUST log-in to the website in order to access mail, postings, chat, etc. So, frankly, I was surprized to see this site the way it is.

I don't see a problem with doing what you are suggesting. Unfortunately I don't have the time I'd like to have to participate more in the matters/discussions of our group, but I do go into the web site often to view subjects, files, etc.

** Open for discussion **

Joseph,
My vote for "Open for discussion" is that once a year seems fair to me.

Thank you so very much for opening up this wonderful website! I have learned so much about my ancestor's and am constantly learning new things. We have a wonderful group of very informed and helpful members.

Films

I just went through the films for Zacatecas and wondered if there is a way to put the film numbers in order by catagory and sequence? It would help to keep us from entering duplicate film or batch numbers.

Linda,

I have found that once you enter the film#, title, number, years etc into the program, it will automatically add them in the proper order.
First find the city/town where you want to enter film #'s, make a printout of the films already on file for that city, then before making an entry I check to see if the film number is there and if not I enter the title exactly as it is in the database. For example if it already says marriages that is how I write it, not marriage. If I write marriage instead of marriages it will position it in a new category, new sequence.

Joseph, when I get into the Nuestros Ranchos site it acknowledges me by name unless I'm on a different computer then it asks me to sign in.. Does this site record or show how often we are actually into the Nuestros site? If it does then those who use the site would not have to do anything special and you would have a record of who has not used the site for the last year... or am I over simplifying it?
