There will be a genealogy conference held at the University of Aguascalientes (Mexico) on Aug 28-29. Arrangements are being made at the Hotel Francia Aguascalientes for anyone wishing to stay there. I do not have the names of speakers yet but it will include Mariano Gonzales Leal among others. Our own Mickey Garcia will also be a speaker. I was to accompany her but suffered a broken ankle on July 21st and am in a Rehab Hosp for therapy and will not be able to attend.

Sigo buscando a un personaje de nombre Juan Torres Rosales que tenia 16 años de edad y cuyos padres eran Luciano Torres y Merced Rosales. Murio a los 97 años en San Pedro Piedra Groda, Zacatecas.

i've tried finding death records for some people on my family tree and have had no luck. for example i know that my double great grandpa felix lopez must have died after 1906 but before 1926, but i can't seem to find his death records. i'm also looking for some of his kids' death records since some of them died from a plague during that time.

i'm also trying to look for a death record for a triple great grandfather named nabor ceballos. supposedly he lived to around a hundred years old. since nabor got married for the first time in 1858, his birth year would most likely be at around 1840. if it's true that he lived to a hundred, he would have died sometime during the late 1930' and early 1940's.

Thank you all for your contributions of personal cuentos, historical tidbits, and great assortment of articles. It is always an adventure opening up my mail.

You will notice a new category in this issue, Heritage Projects, directly under the United States category.

It is my hope that if you are starting a heritage related project, such as a family reunion, locating and identifying a historic site, promoting the contributions of an individual or organization that you will send the information along and let other know what you are doing. We would like to share your efforts with readers. You may be starting a project which could encourage others, or even attract assistance in fulfilling your goal.

As I was preparing the issue, I received a call from Tony Zapata, sharing some good news. Tony had completed arrangements on a building in Los Angeles for handicapped veterans, to named after Guy Gabaldon, WWII hero. The dedication of the building will be November 6th. I put Tony in touch with Steve Rubin, producer of the documentary East L.A. Marine, the true story of Guy Gabaldon. Steve will be assisting in the text for the plaque and press releases, etc.

Please let us know what you are doing in your community to share the historic contributions of your primos or heroes.

The front page in the August issue is a 1980 poster by the well-known work of artist Ignacio Gomez. The poster is a reminder that Hispanic Heritage Month is from September 15 to October 15. Hopefully, you will find some ways in which you can celebrate your Latino heritage.

Let me suggest that you request your City Council to make a public proclamation recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month. Call your mayor's office and ask how it is done in your city.

The NCLR conference and Family Expo was outstanding. You will see some photos and comments in this issue and also in the upcoming September issue.

Please keep sending your cuentos. Under Family History, I've included some reactions to every day items which provoked a response from me.
Hope you enjoy them and it gives you a nudge to send a little cuento on items that you have saved for some reason.

Hello fellow members,

I'm so glad to have found this group for our little area in Nueva Galicia
and have enjoyed my genealogy research for some time. However, I've done
my best to trace back my family line on my own but have hit a discouraging
road block. It's time to reach out for help and hopefully other's have
followed this same family line. The references below are all from El
Sagrario, Aguascalientes.

I've researched my father's line (grandfather is GARCIA and grandmother
GONZALEZ). However, the furthest I've reached for certain is Fernando
Fermin Garzia (born El Sagrario, Aguas, 8/25/1754 and Christened 9/15/1754,
married to MARIA ANTONIA ABAD ALONZO VERNALES DE LOS YNOJOS on 3/26/1794).
However DE LOS YNOJOS confuses me because I believe (not sure) that
FERNANDO FERMIN's father was JOSEPH MANUEL GARZIA who married MARIA
ANTONIETA ALONSO DE LOS YNOJOS, on 4/16/1752. Did Fermin marry a
half-sister?

Going further back, (the rest of this line back i'm not confident) JOSEPH
MANUEL GARZIA father was CARLOS GARCIA (baptized 12/1/1705) married JUAN
ARIAS (baptized 5/3/1711) on 2/5/1729. If this information is correct, the
last (stumbling block) information I have is that CARLOS's birth parents
were JOSEPH GARCIA and JOSEPHA FERNANDEZ (Ortis?). I have no information
about dates or where Joseph and Josepha were born/married. This has been
my dead end for MONTHS!

Any assistance or guidance (or education) would GREATLY be appreciated.
I've seen success other's have had here, but have always been reluctant.
But I have nothing to lose, but everything to gain.

Can anyone help in locating -Isidro Mercado- this is what I know of him.
He is probably related to the Mercado's that married in to the Orendain family of Magdalena Jalisco and that happened to own the Hacienda de San Andres.
This I suspect because I found a brother and a sister Mercado married to a brother and a sister Orendain.

Maria Luiza Mercado Topete married Joaquin Orendain Camacho on dec. 20 1819 (they are the parents of Zenon Orendain Mercado) Im not sure if he was the owner of the hacienda or there is another Zenon Orendain born before him, what I do know is that one of Maria Luizas and Joaquin Orendain's children were born in the Hacienda.

I have a verbal account from his grandson Jose Mercado Avila who passed away last year at 94 yrs of age and this is what he told me:

That Isidro lived and worked in the Hacienda de San Andres, he was a labrador.
That he was married to a Maria Ramos.
That he had a son by the name of Ciro Mercado who was born in 1880 (Jose's father).

I have looked in all the towns surrounding Magdalena with no luck and the only thing
I have been able to find on his son Ciro is a 1930 census of Guadalajara, by that
time he was married to a Francisca Avila of Magdalena and had several children.
This is what the census states:
Francisca Avila-F- 40 yrs.
Nicandro- M-20 yrs.
Julia- F-18 yrs.
Salvador- M-15 yrs.
*Jose- M-13 yrs.
Pedro- M-10 yrs.
Arcadio- M-13 yrs.

I have a question regarding the parents of my ancestors Joseph Antonio Lopez and Casimira Antonia Romo. They were married on 03 May 1758 in Teocaltiche Jalisco. Joseph Antonio Lopez is son of Cristobal Lopes and Teresa Peres, and Casimira Antonia Romo is daughter of Francisco Romo and Juana Diaz. I was looking through family search and I found two couples that seem to be my ancestors (parents of Casimria Romo) Francisco Romo and Juana Diaz. I found the baptism record of Lazaro Romo Diaz christenising on 26 Feb 1748 in Teocaltiche,Jalisco son of Francisco Romo and Juana Dias. Then I also found a baptism record of Antonia Leandra Romo Dias christenising on 06 Apr 1742 in El Sagrario, Aguascalientes,Mexico daughter of Francisco Xavier Romo de Vibar and Juana Dias Montañes de Sandi. I am wondering if Francisco Romo and Juana Dias are the same Francisco Xavier Romo de Vibar and Juana Dias Montañes de Sandi. Are any of you aware of this couple and know the names of their children? If so, do any of you know the ancestry of this Francisco Xavier Romo de Vibar and Juana Dias Montañes de Sandi? The dates line up.

I also found a dispensa in the Diocesis of Guadalajara of Cristobal Lopez Velarde and Teresa Perez from Teocaltiche on 05 Jan 1728. I am wondering if this couple are the parents of Joseph Antonio Lopez. The dates also line up.

Lope Ruis de Esparza is named in volume 7, in the year 1593. The entry is as follows:

Nueva España como criado de don Enrique de Maleón.—8 febrero.

That is great that you have tested more than one close family member. Many
people see very different results when they do that. The results still
should not be take literally for the reasons I mentioned in my previous

The time period of the FamilyTreeDNA myOrigins results can go back as far
10,000 years per a post at

National Geographic states that it can go back further. They use similar
equipment and the markers are compared with living people so it isn't a
case over one piece of equipment or technology over another. It has to do
with interpretation of the data

Iberians have 37% Northern European and 48% Mediterranean and 13% Southwest
Asian per National Geographic and they have the following to say about
Iberians: "This reference population is based on samples collected from
people native to Spain and Portugal. The 48% Mediterranean and 13%
Southwest Asian percentages reflect the strong influence of
agriculturalists from the Fertile Crescent in the Middle East, who arrived

comes from the pre-agricultural population of Europe—the earliest settlers,

Here is an assessment of DNA obtained from ancient remains of people that
had lived in the Mesolithic and the Neolithic. The Mesolithic are more
Northern European like and the Neolithic are more Mediterranean like. This
agrees with a portion of what FTDNA and National Geographic says about the
change between the Mesolithic and the Neolithic.

The time period for autosomal matches is about 5 generations but there have
been cases where people have found matches that were related from previous
generations.

we all seem to assume that we are descendant of Spain, but just like my DNA, it reveal that my blood line has a minor percentage of an Iberian marker and more with northern and eastern Europe and Eastern European Jewish, along with my native American marker. A number of my antepasados are listed as españoles or español natural, I wonder who amongst them was of jewish descent.

Me atrevo a hacer un breve comentario , no  sin  antes  disculparme  por  mi poca  elocuencia ,  pienso  que  no  todas  la  Familias de JUD?OS SEFARD?ES fueron  expulsados con lujo de  violencia ,  claro  me  refiero a casos aislados y regularmente Familiares  muy  allegados a los  Reyes Cat?licos.  como  en  el  caso  de  los Velasco  ya  sea  de  la  linea de Gomez Cervantes de Velasco y en  la  que  me  llega  por los  Fernandez de Velasco  o  Henriquez de Velasco  primos  muy  allegados  a los  cuales  les  dieron  muy  buenas  encomiendas  en  la Nueva Espa?a  o  los  Mendoza o Figueroa de Mendoza  por  igual.  creo  que  en  el  caso  de  Jalisco  o  los  Alte?os  fue  mas  que  expulsi?n una  manera de  protegerlos de la Santa Inquisici?n y  de su  m?ximo inquisidor Tom?s de Torquemada  muchas  gracias  Atte Ignacio  Anaya Gomez

Asi es Ignacio,

Todo los casos son diferentes. No se la imaginacion y fascinacion que la gente tiene con  los sefardies. Lo mismo acontece cuando se menciona nobleza o hidalguia y la realeza. Algunos dicen que somos judios, otros dicen que somos arabes, otros dicen que somos indigenas, en fin depende en la genealogia de la persona. Solo porque Gomez "parece en registros de sefardies" (aun que nunca he visto tal documento, ni creo que existe) que es un apellido Gomez, no significa que todos los Gomez vienen de la misma rama. Debemos parar con estos mitos, leyendas o tradiciones orales, y enfocar el estudio con documentos fidedignos. La mayoria de la gente de los altos de Jalisco, son castellano. Lo sabemos por las genealogias son probadas exhaustivamente por mi y varios genealogistas.
