Nuestros Ranchos===>2 part instructions

Arturo has created a page of instructions. They are pretty easy to
follow and in two parts. The first part below the URL given for the
instructions on the website itself tells how to get your password. .
.key point here is NOT to create a NEW Account. Read through the
instructions. THEN---THEN---THEN after you get your password and log in
if you want to start sending messages to one of the forums you need to
follow the instructions called: "Instructions for signing up
for the mailing lists is as follows"
  Here you will see
detailed instructions (very straightforword, but they do require you to
read and follow them) on how to subscribe yourself to the individual
email forums. Basically you subscribe to which ever of the 3 email
forums you want to be part of then you'll get a CONFIRMATION
email that you need to reply to. . .that's it.

Yes this is different than Yahoo but in time you will see that it is
better.

PLEASE READ below. . .very straight forword.

thanks,

joseph

Please do NOT create a new account. Your account is already
set up with your YahooGroups userid but you will have to request a new
password in order to log in. The new password will be sent to the email
registerd on your YahooGroups account and once you receive your
password you can log and change it to whatever they like. In order to
do this:

  • From the main page, click on “Request New Password” just below
    the login area.
  • Enter your YahooGroups username or the email address registered
    on YahooGroups ranchos.
  • Click on e-mail new password.
  • You will receive an email with your new password.
  • Log on with your YahooGroups username and the password received
    in the email.
  • Click on “My account” (Second or third sidebar menu item)
  • Click on the “Edit” tab and enter new password (in both fields
    provided) and click submit.
  • Review other information in the Account Settings category.
Change your language, time zone, etc. as necessary. Please do NOT
change your email address. During the transition, the email addresses
registered on this site and on YahooGroups must match or messages will
be rejected by one site or another. This restriction will be lifted
    once the transition is complete.
  • Review the information in the Personal Information category.
Enter your name, location and geographic areas and surnames of
    research.
  • Review the Mailing Lists settings, and subscribe to the
mailing lists per the instructions below. This is very important. If
you do not sign up for the mailing lists, any messages that you post
will not get distributed to the group!

Instructions for signing up for the mailing lists is as
follows:

  • Click on the mailing lists menu option on the right hand menu or
click on the mailing lists menu item when editing your account in step
    8 above.
  • Click on the type of subscription you would like for each of
the three mailing lists. You must initially subscribe to receiving all
email or daily digests. Once you have gone confirmed your subscription
(next step) you can change back your settings to “No Email” which
allows you to send messages to the list but not receive any messages
from the list, i.e. you will be able to read messages only by going
    onto the website.
  • You will receive a message asking for confirmation of your
email address for each of the mailing lists to which you subscribe. If
you sign up for all three, you will receive three separate messages.
Simply reply to each message to confirm your subscription.
  • Once you have registered for a list, the messages that you
post will get distributed to the group. You can post in any of the
three Forums or via email to any one of the three lists and the
messages will automatically get posted to the website and get
distributed to those signed up for the new Nuestros Ranchos list as
well as the old YahooGroups list. The posting addresses are
    general@nuestrosranchos.org, research@nuestrosranchos.org, or
    announce@nuestrosranchos.org.

Meeting in Southern California

It was so nice to meet with those of you who were able to attend the
luncheon meeting in southern California today. The food was delicious!
Thanks to all of you who pulled this together.

I was talking to Rosalinda about the possibility of someone compiling a book
list of relevant resources.

Any discussion on how to get access to out-of-print books?

Links

Joseph and Arturo:

Congratulations on the new website! It looks like this is the
site we all have been waiting for some time.

My personal concern is that I can't find the "Links" anymore! What
happened to them?

I personally feel that the "Links" component of the site is one, if
not, the most important of the features. It opens the door to other
very important resources to our research efforts in our quest for
education and our history. I am sure the "Nuestros Ranchos" members
will be very happy to see it as part of the new website. Please don't
leave it out.

Howard E. Duff

To Jose Luis Macias,

The person you are seeking could be this one listed in the SSDI:

      H. Duff
        SSN:
449-03-0559
        Last Residence:  78733
Austin, Travis, Texas
        Born:  23 August
1903
        Died:  Jul 1984
        State (Year) SSN
Issued:  Texas (Before 1951)

I think your best bet is to try and get the death certificate
from:

       Bureau of Vital Statistics
        Texas Department of
Health
        1100 West 49th Street
        Austin, TX 78756-3191
        Telephone:
512-458-7111

You could also try the County Courthouse in Travis County, and the Austin
Public Library for a death record or a death notice for July 1984.

Emilie Garcia
Port Orchard, WA ----

Alicia was right: Pretensa

I haven't studied the word to get its exact meaning but I've understood
it to be the woman involved in the marriage with pretenso referring to
the man. probably more there about that.

joseph. . .George Ryskamps book might go more into it "Finding Your
Hispanic Roots."

Posting To New Group

there are 3 message forums at the new site. It was set up like that so
people could choose which messages they wanted to receive.

the catagories are:

research
general
announcements

to post messages to these forums you need to "subscribe" to them. In
doing that a message is generated and sent to you asking that you
confirm your wish to join that forum. when you reply to that message you
are in the forum and can post and receive messages. If you fail to reply
to that message or subscribe in the first place you can't use the forum.

thanks,

joseph

Texas Border Crossing Records

I am over at the National Archives looking up border crossing records and am having no luck finding El Paso crossings from 1916. Does anybody know if these crossings are available on microfilm anywhere? The college student staff member who is working here tonight told me that those years for El Paso are not filmed... but I want to make sure.

On a brighter note, Chris Pineda, I have found the border crossing records for your great-grandparents Nicanor Pineda and Emilia Gonzalez. I will scan them and send them to you.

Features of New Site

First of all I want to thank all of you brave and patient souls who have
gone on the new website. I know that changes are generally hard to
swallow and that there are glitches in the site still that make it
somewhat cumbersome to use. but perhaps some of you will be enticed by
some of the new features we will have.

- Much much much more storage space for your files. So if you
were relegated to Ranchos2, or even if you were not but wanted to look
up someone's files who was relegated in Ranchos2. you will have to do so
no longer. All of the files should fit in the site and the description
of the file folders is searchable so you can simply type a surname or a
location and find the file folder with the relevant information

- The user database is searchable. We have already imported
the who's who database from YahooGroups and once we get the remainder of
members to fill in their profiles, you can simply search for a surname
in the user database and find who is researching that surname. Same
goes for locations.

- GEDCOM files. You will be able to upload GEDCOM files.
These will be viewable only by members, just like any other file but
viewers can navigate interactively through the trees. Furthermore, the
GEDCOM files are not downloadable by anyone other than the owner of the
file. A very useful feature is that members can use the online GEDCOM
database to cooperate with other members on building up a family line.

Please go on and try out the site. Let me or Joseph know If you have
any questions or suggestions.

Using the New Site: Instructions

Message from Joseph Puentes makas@...

As we make the transition to the
new group it is understood that there will be a bit of a learning curve
as we all get used to the new system. There has been a little confusion
about how to sign up for a new password. Well here are the instructions
that were on the other end of the URL link that was in the previous
email instructions that Arturo wrote up [Note: it is important not
to sign up for a new account
but "Request
New Password
" using your YahooGroups

CONVERTING PAF/ENGLISH TO PAF/SPANISH

Message from Arturo Ramos arturo.ramos2@...

I don't really know why, but PAF is available in Spanish in only Version 4.0.4, whereas the latest version is 5.2.18. I have not used the 4.0.4 so I am not sure what charting and reporting capabilities there are, but I know that there are a few members that use both the English and Spanish language version much in the way that you are envisioning.

As far as conversion, I don't think you really need to worry about it. You can just open up the PAF file that you have created in the English Version of the software in the Spanish Version.
