Cañadas de Obregón, Jalisco

I noticed that for Cañadas de Obregón, Jalisco there are civil records but I can't seem to find Church Records listed for this location. If a birth was recorded in the civil record for Cañadas de Obregón, Jalisco where do you think they took their children to be baptized and recorded? The range of dates is 1870's

thanks for your help with this,

Lorenzo Mejia

Is the Lorenzo Mejia (1) who married Mariana de Benavides and Josefa de Paez the same as the Lorenzo Mejia (2) who married Ines de Estrada?

Could it be Lorenzo Mejia married Mariana de Benavides (AKA de Aguayo) and had Matias and Juana Mejia, then married Ines de Estrada, then married Josefa de Paez?

Both Lorenzo Mejias had a Juana Mejia born before 1641. Both Lorenzo Mejias had a Jeronimo Mejia. Lorenzo Mejia (1) died sometime after 17 Oct 1677 and Lorenzo Mejia (2) died on 10 Aug 1683.

The Genealogía de Nochistlán antiguo reino de la Nueva Galicia en el siglo XVII según sus archivos parroquiales lists Lorenzo Mejia (1) as possible son of Lorenzo Mejia (2), but lists some discrepancies.

03 Mar 1635 Confirmations:
a) Juana Mejia daughter of Lorenzo Mejia and Mariana de Aguayo (possibly AKA de Benavides).

27 Aug 1638:
a) Lorenzo Mejia (2) marries Ines de Estrada.

20 Sep 1649 Padrones:
a) Two Lorenzo Mejias are listed. One is viudo and one is child (<5 year old).
b) Oldest son Matias Mejia is married so likely born < 1633.
c) Second oldest is Juana cc (likely born <1641).
d). Other children listed are with Ines de Estrada, so likely Lorenzo Mejia (2).
This is Lorenzo Mejia (2) since children with Ines de Estrada are listed together. and not son of Ines de Estrada but of Mariana.

12 Oct 1660:
a) Lorenzo Mejia (1), viudo of Mariana de Benavides, marries Josefa de Paez.

1664 Padrones:
a) Only one Lorenzo Mejia is listed. Viudo.

1667 Confirmations:
a) Jeronimo hijo de Lorenzo Mejia (1) y Josefa de Paez difunta

Oct 17 1677:
a. Antonio Mejia marriage. I read it as "Lorenco Mixia y de Josepha de Paez difunta esp^les", whereas reads it as "Lorenco Mexia y Josefa de Paez, difuntos;"

10 Aug 1683:
a) Burial record of Lorenzo Mejia (2) vuido. Lists Domingo Mejia and Antonio Gomez Borrallo.

17xx other dispensas in future:
a) Jeronimo Mejia listed as brother of children of Lorenzo Mejia (2) and Ines de Estrada

Inquisicion Mexicana: PEDRO RUIZ DE HARO, CRISTOBAL ORDOÑEZ

This is the limpieza of Petronila de Haro, daughter of Pedro Ruiz de Haro cc Leonor Arias.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSD2-W771-P?i=381&cat=…

Her husband, Gonzalo de Morillo, had been named familiar de la Inquisicion in Compestela, and limpiezas were required for both of them. His limpieza begins here.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSD2-W784-K?cat=31792

The paternal grandparents of Petronila de Haro were Pedro de Haro cc Francisca Muñoz, and her maternal grandparents were Miguel Arias and Francisca de Torres, of Medellin, Reinos de Castilla. Her mother's brother was Juan Arias.

I don’t descend from this family, but I saw the name, Pedro Ruiz de Haro, and on a whim, I began reading it. And a good thing: the first witness for Petronila de Haro is my g10 Cristobal Ordoñez, son of conquistador Diego de San Martin cc Elvira Ordoñez, and brother of conquistador Juan Michel.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSD2-W7W7-8?cat=31792

Ordoñez gave his testimony on 19 Jan 1600, at his home in Guadalajara. He states that he had known Petronila for more than 48 years, and that he met her in Compostela, at the home of her parents, who were his “deudos y amigos” (!!!!!). He says that he first met Pedro Ruiz de Haro, secretario de la Audiencia Real de Guadalajara, some 69 years before (1531), when Cristobal was 7 years-old. This places his birth around 1524, making him 76 at the time of the inquest (he gives his age as “mas de 74 años poco mas o menos”).

The page folds at that point in the sentence, and there might be a word or 2 missing, but it appears to say that his paternal grandmother, Ysabel de Haro, was sister of Pedro de Haro cc Francisca Muñoz, implying that conquistadores Pedro Ruiz de Haro and Diego de San Martin were 1st-cousins. Either way, we now know the name of Diego de San Martin's mother, and we know she is related to Pedro de Haro.

Question: it is known that Pedro Ruiz de Haro was from Peñaranda en Reinos de Castilla: which Peñaranda? De Duero, in Burgos? Or de Bracamonte, near Salamanca?

ANA MICHEL

Another testigo is Ana Michel, wife of Pedro de Enciso, and daughter of Juan Michel cc Catalina Mena. I had read that they had no known offspring, but this appears to disprove that. Ana Michel was born around 1550.

Marriage status inconsistency

Hi!

I have a question that's haunting me a little. My great grandmother, Francisca Ríos, appears to be a widow at the moment of marrying my great grandfather: born in 1899, she marries Bartolomé Quezada in 1918, and the registry appears both in civil registration and church records, and it shows even in her baptism record.

However, in 1926 she marries José María Quezada, my great grandfather, saying that she's 22 years old. Her name, her parents' names and even her grandparents' names are exactly the same, but both the civil registry and the church records say she's "célibe", not a widow or anything of the sort. The church record doesn't mention any need for a dispensa, or acknlowledges in any way that previous marriage.

¿Does anyone have an idea of why this could happen? Two registries seem too much to be an honest mistake.

Looking for Volunteers.

Hello fellow genealogists. Here is an email from a non-profit in my city. If anyone is interested please contact me. We could set up so that we can help with as many or as little projects as you deem reasonable. Just let me know.

"I have started a non-profit with my friend Tara MacDonald called Olive Branch Connections. Our mission is to provide free genealogical research for people who would greatly benefit from hearing their family's story. Right now, we are working with St. John's Program for Real Change, which is a homeless shelter and program for women and children in Sacramento. We have the women fill out pedigrees as far as they know, and we research their family history for them, providing them with a binder of the pedigree, documents, and other stories we discovered.

We have volunteer researchers helping us with the trees. Some of the women have Mexican ancestry, and right now none of our researchers specialize in Mexican research.

Do you know someone who would be willing to help us research for the women with Mexican ancestry?"

Graias,
Marty Puentes

Introduction - Carlos Tapia González

Hi,

My name is Carlos Tapia González, I 'm a new member. I'm happy I found this website while researching about my ancestors. I'm happy to be a part of this community. I'm currently living in Switzerland and doing research online about my mother's family.

I'm interested in the following families : Martin, Barba, Aceves, González, Gutierrez, Jimenez, Navarro, Magaña
The places I'm interested are mostly in Altos de Jalisco and Aguascalientes.

I saw a lot of content in english, so this is why I'm writing in English, but I speak perfect spanish.

This is the link to my folder :

I look forward to having interesting conversations with you and discovering new information.

Diego Vallin, husband of Francisca Ruis de Esparza

I have located the will of Diego Vallin, husband of Francisca Ruis de Esparza, dated October 1679.

This will is in the Archives of Aguascalientes at http://sigue.aguascalientes.gob.mx/AXWeb/Main.aspx?DataSource=APPXTENDER (use search parameter *Vallin to find it).

It is somewhat difficult for me to read, but I think it has the following information:

Diego was the son of Geronmio Vallin and Dona Francisca de Carara (I'm not sure about her last name), and married (1) Dona Mariana de Sandia, daughter of Juan Marin de Penalosa and Dona Maria de Sandi. They had two children

(1) Dona Francisca de Herrera who married Andres de Sandoval
(2) Bartholome Vallin, apparently unmarried and of age 21 or 22

Diego married (2) Francisca de Esparza daughter of Salvador de Esparza and Maria de Vielma. They have two children under the age of 14

(1) Nicolas
(2) Antonia

I can find no reference to children of Francisca de Esparza by her first husband.

Armando and Jaime: perhaps you can get more information from it.

Question about description of burial in Mexico

I have a direct ancestor who died in Aguascalientes in 1788. Her burial record says that she received "sepultura ecclca. [ecclesiastica] con cruz basa en fabrica de dos pesos." I'm not sure if it's "basa" or "baja." In either case, I have no idea what this means. Could someone please shed some light on this? Thank you.

You can see the record here: "México, Aguascalientes, registros parroquiales, 1601-1962," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-63V3-TPN?cc=1502404&wc=M6Q… : 30 September 2020), Rincón de Romos > San José de Gracia > Defunciones 1783-1790, 1798-1844 > image 31 of 444; parroquias Católicas, Aguascalientes (Catholic Church parishes, Aguascalientes).

Translation Needed

I would like for someone who understands Spanish better than I do to look at a document and tell me what it is about. It is regarding my ancestor Antonio Días de Lomas and a man named Juan de Herrera. I don’t need an actual translation, but I would like to know what the charges were and what the outcome was. Here is the link: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-D19S-CY4?i=148&wc=M6QF…

The document is on images 149-152 on the Información Matrimonial for 1698-1702, Aguascalientes, Asunción de María, film #299562. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Garcia de Monroy y Pizarro

Hello Cousins, I realize this is an old post but I wanted to find out if anyone has additional information about a specific family in Tequila mentioned here on page 5 of this post: http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/20132?page=4

“Catalina de Monroy Pizarro fue hija de García de Monroy Pizarro y de Luisa de León Castro y Ulloa, vecinos de Tequila, sus fundadores y dueños de las principales haciendas de agave azul en el siglo XVII

García de Monroy Pizarro fue hijo de Francisco de Monroy Pizarro y de Aldonza de Castro (Almesto y Suárez de Figueroa).”

I am trying to determine where the multiple Garcia de Monroy y Pizarro fit in, specifically my 9th GGF, Garcia de Monroy y Pizarro married to Mariana Melendez de León.

The first, (1)Garcia de Monroy Pizarro (abt 1600- bef Oct 1654)) married to Luisa de León Castro y Ulloa is mentioned in this post but records only go back to 1649. The records of their children’s baptisms I do have and believe Luisa de León Castro y Ulloa was the first spouse.

The second, (2)Garcia de Monroy Pizarro (abt 1600- bef Oct 1654) married Maria de la Cueva Mendoza. I believe this is the same person as previously mentioned with a second spouse. I found records that mention him being deceased “ya difunto” by Oct. 1654 in his daughter’s wedding, Maria de la Cueva Monroy (abt 1637-bef 1663) with Joseph Lopez de Salazar (m.05/22/1655 in Tequila, Jal).

The third, (1.a)(Alférez or Ensign) García de Monroy y Pizarro (abt.1630- aft. 1660) married to Catalina Gomez de Bribiesca. He is mentioned in several records as godparent along with his wife after 1654, long after the other Garcia de Monroy Pizarro was deceased. Some records include his title, “Alférez” so he is the correct person. There is also a record that states "su hermano de la madre de el niño" where he is padrino for child of Catalina de Monroy y Pizarro.

The fourth, (3.)García de Monroy y Pizarro (abt 1650-bef. 1713) married to Mariana Melendez de León (m. 03/19/1669 Guadalajara). This is my 9th GGF and I am trying to see who the parents were. His children were also born in Tequila, Jal but a bit later during the early 1680s.

Last, there is (4.)Francisco de Monroy y Pizarro (abt 1630-) married to Francisca Gomez Bribiesca de Meza. I am not sure where he fits into all this as I am not done with the records of this film.

(Patriarch) Francisco de Monroy Pizarro and Aldonza de Castro (Almesto y Suárez de Figueroa)

c. Geronimo Monroy (10/22/1653-)
d. Josefa Monroy (12/24/1656-)
e. Francisco Monroy (07/09/1658-)

I am still in the process of reviewing the films but any help to determine the parents of García de Monroy y Pizarro (abt 1650-bef. 1713) married to Mariana Melendez de León would be appreciated.

Thank you

About Pasajeros that traveled by ship to Nueva Espana (Mexico)

I would like to give tips to people out there that are interested in looking up people or ancestors that traveled by ship from Spain to Nueva Espana (Mexico).

Each pasajero has a document usually abouot 4 - 10 pages long on average. But here is the thing? Each pasajero many times has people that traveled with him on the ship such as "su mujer," "sus hijos," "criados." Those extra people traveling with the pasajero are buried in the document. So you have to read the document to find the names of the other people that traveled with the "pasajero."

The point I am trying to make is that in he pars website for example, it will list names of the pasajero's who sailed to Nueva Espana. But they had people that traveled with them that are named inside the pasajero's document which you will have to read to find who they are.

Here is a pars website to look through:

http://www.archivesportaleurope.net/web/guest

You can search "pasajeros." Then on the left side after the list comes up you can filter by years. For example I wanted to searched 1687 so I filtered for 1687 range. I picked the one on the list called "informacion y licencias de pasajeros a indias 1687."

Even though it doesn't show digital documents attached. Don't be fooled. They many times are attached. So I would click on "view in original presentation." It would take me to the next page called "Pares."

In the middle of the page "1687" then there would be "153 units attached."

I would click on the 153 units attached. And they they are. A list of names of 153 pasajeros. Then I would open each document and read through it to see who traveled with him in the form of "su mujer," "sus hijos," "criados."

Other topics you can search for in pars website are:

Relacion de pasajeros - gives more names of passengers

Registro de navios - before the fleets were to sail to nueva espana, ships were being registered with things about their cargo for example.

Here is a website of the "flotas" that sailed to nueva espana (mexico) and if you click on one it gives the whole list of names of ships that sailed that year.

Da Maria de Olibarri the wife of Dn Pedro de Abalos Bracamonte 1666

Hello Group,

Sorry I've been out of touch with the group, but I've been researching elsewhere in Mexico this past year. As of late I have been doing research in Nayarit working on my Rios Californio line. For the past few weeks I've been reading Tepic burials and in the past week Compostela burials.

Tonight I found Da Maria de Olibarri, the wife of Dn Pedro de Abalos (Davalos) Bracamonte. The document can be found on image 10 Compostela, Nayarit Entierros 1663-1797. This family is from Guadalajara from what I can tell from the other information I've found. The document lists their 7 children, Alo (Alfonso I believe), Francisca, Nicolas, Pedro, Leonor, Diego and Madgalena. Maria was buried in 1666.

While searching Tepic and Compostela burials I'm coming across a lot of people from Guadalajara, a few from Aguascalientes, Nochitlan, and a few from Jalos. Just giving you all a heads up.

Hope this helps....

ALONSO DE ESTRADA, HIJO DE …

Several of us descend from Alonso de Estrada, royal treasurer and colonial governor of Nueva España, during the time of Cortés. Legend has him as the bastard son of Rey Fernando II el Catolico and a Luisa de Estrada, daughter of an ambassador. This is refuted by the 1585 limpieza de sangre of his great-grandson, Gobernador Jorge de Alvarado y Villafañe, which names Alonso de Estrada’s parents as Juan Fernandez Hidalgo, of Ciudad Real, and his first wife - whose name none of the witnesses could remember, only that his 2nd wife was surnamed Oliver. It did name his paternal grandparents as Diego Fernandez Hidalgo and Maria Gonzalez de Estrada. That document can be found at the PARES website, and it is digitized in its entirety, if you want to read it, though it is long and a hard read. It is the only historical document that I know of that names the father of Alonso de Estrada. Until now…and believe me, this one is a MUCH easier read!

I was grazing through the Mexican Inquisition archives, and I randomly came upon this. It’s the limpieza and proof of nobility of Licenciado Alvaro Gomez de Abaunza y Castro, oidor de la Audiencia de Guatemala, and later alcalde de crimen de la Audiencia de Mexico, and of his wife, Doña Isabel Costilla de Saavedra. It appears to be dated 11 Dec 1608. While glancing through their lines, I noticed that she was great-great granddaughter of Alonso de Estrada and Doña Marina Flores de la Caballeria, and to my amazement, it names their parents! I jumped out of my chair!

According to her prueba de nobleza, Alonso de Estrada’s father was Juan Fernandez de Estrada, corresponding with the 1585 Jorge Alvarado limpieza, but it names his mother as Luisa de Oliver. She might be the N. de Oliver mentioned in the 1585 limpieza, making her Fernandez’s second wife, and therefore step-mother of Alonso de Estrada - unless his father married sisters, which is totally possible.

Either way, while the identity of his mother might still be in doubt, we now have a second document confirming that Alonso de Estrada was son of Juan Fernandez de Estrada, aka Juan Fernandez Hidalgo, who, according to the entry for Marina de Estrada (img249L), was:

“hijo segundo de la Casa de Estrada que bino de asturias a ciudad real, donde fue casado con doña luisa de oliver vezina de la dicha ciudad y fundo el mayorazgo de la Villa de Picon y de otras haciendas suyas…”

“the second son of the House of Estrada, who came from Asturias to Ciudad Real, where he married doña Luisa de Oliver, native of said city, and who founded the mayorazgo of the Villa de Picon, and of other haciendas in his possession…”

So, it’s looking more and more like there was no royal bastard birth for our infamous ancestor, Alonso de Estrada, and that it was just a legend, that probably grew from a popular joke, regarding his rapid ascent to power. I loved the idea of descending from a bastard son of the Catholic King - I love the irony, and I was thrilled when I first read about it, but these pieces of the puzzle keep popping up and bursting that bubble!

All the same, Alonso de Estrada’s life story is just as compelling, and even more impressive, if he did it without being of royal blood. It shows how a man can go from being a low-head-on-the-totem-pole holder of a señorio in Ciudad Real, to being governor of and one of the most powerful figures in one of the Crown’s newest acquisitions.

This prueba also gives a genealogy of his wife, Doña Marina Flores de la Caballeria, naming her parents and paternal grandparents, though it mistakenly names her grandfather as Alonso Gutierrez de la Caballeria, when it was his brother, Comendador Gonzalo Gutierrez: her grandmother, Doña Catalina de Luna, married brothers, sons of Men Gutierrez de la Caballeria cc Catalina de la Cabra. It does mention that Doña Catalina de Luna was niece of Alvaro de Luna, Condestable de Castilla, which is super cool, and shows how connected these Sefardi families were to the centers of power. By the way, there is no mention of Doña Marina being descended from Conversos, which is discussed in depth in the 1585 limpieza. I guess too many generations had passed.

I recommend reading this limpieza y prueba. The script is highly legible, and it’s laid out in columns, by relationships and by generations, with biographies of each ancestor. It’s like an encyclopedia: Alvaro Gomez de Abaunza and Isabel Costilla had some illustrious ancestors, back in Spain, and in Colonial Mexico and Guatemala - primeros conquistadores y pobladores, some really good stuff, and I’m sure some of you will make some connections.
Saludos!
