Hi, Carlos,
I have contacted Jaime's son in Mexico City, and so has Arturo, our webmaster. The son also is supposedly a member of this group. The son told me he is going to publish his father's last project that he was working on when he died, but that he and his siblings are not interested in genealogy to the extent that their father was, and they are tied down earning a living. What was sad to hear was that his father's papers are all molding and bug-ridden in a storage room in his wife's house somewhere. I will try and find that e-mail address I had for the son, I think his name is Jaime also, and send it to you later.
Thanks much,
Emilie

Phelipe Ortiz was son of Pedro Ortiz and Catalina Ramirez. He married Josepha de Avila, daughter of Luis de Avila and Clara de Amaia (also as Anaya) on 26 April 1643 in Aguascalientes.
Jaime
Luis de Avila and Clara de Amaia had three children that I have been able to document so far (which I would expect you also know):
Josepha, who you mentioned, who married 26 Apr 1643, Phelipe Ortiz (Aguascalientes film 299421, image 272)
Maria, who married 11 Mar 1646 (velados 10 Aug 1646), Pablo de Montes de Oca Sanches (same film, images 283 and 284)
Nicolas, who married 6 Feb 1647, Getrudis de Luebana (same film, image 286).
All three of these records name all the parents.
I have not researched further on descendants Josepha de Avila and Phelipe Ortiz.
I have seen some posted genealogies that place Luis de Avila (who married Cathalina de Grijalva) in this family also, but I do not have documentation of this.
In my review of the Informacion Matrimonial, there is an entry for Juan Ramires, son of Phelipe Ortis and Josepha de Avila, and Maria Garcia (also names first wife, Luisa Ruis de Esparza). See the volume for 1678/81, image 137 (16 Feb 1676. I did not find amarriage for them in Aguascalientes.
There is also an entry for Catalina Ortiz, daughter of Juan Ortiz and Luisa Ruis de Esparza, and Salvador Gonzales (9 Aug 1687). (1676/1710, image 134). This film is currently off-line, so I cannot verify the record. I checked my hand-written notes, and it says Juan not Phelipe, but it should be verified.

Lety or anyone. Some of the information you've given me has a film and/or batch number. Is it possible to view this information? Where and how? Also the PAF file you shared has has Marcelo Carrillo B. 1809 and his son Jose Leonardo Carrillo B. 1797. Not possible so how do I interpret this? Typo? Thanks
Last week you asked Lety:

The film numbers are the microfilm numbers of the parrish register books from which the information comes. You can order these films for viewing at your local family history center... go to http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library/FHL/frameset_library.asp to find your closest family history center.
The batch numbers are viewable online though the same site (familysearch.org). You can simply go to Advanced Search, select IGI (usually) or VRI (sometimes), type in the batch number and select "Mexico" from the location options and it will give you the extractions of the relevant film associated with the batch number.
You can also use the "Films" section of the site to go directly to the batches of film extractions available online organized by state and town, i.e. you can go to http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/films/Jalisco/1042 and you will see all of the batches available for Huejucar and you can browse through the extractions or search within a batch on any information, i.e. first name only, name of mother only, etc. which you cannot do without a batch number.
I hope this is helpful. There are probably others in the group that know the tricks of using the batch searching on familysearch.org much better than I, such as those that found your ancestor's information. I strongly suggest you get a good genealogy program (you can download PAF for free) to start keeping track of all of the information you collect as well as the sources of the information. It is very easy to loose track of information very quickly once you get started and documentation is a very important part of serious genealogy research.
Gracias!! Lety

Estimados Colisteros,
On this day in 1587, Virginia Day became the first child of English parents to be born on American soil in what is now Roanoke Island in the State of North Carolina.
One step closer to the answer to this question... there is documentation showing that Spanish women crossed the Atlantic to Hispaniola (Santo Domingo) as early as 1497, perhaps as early as 1494:
By 1497 there were a large number of spanish women in Hispaniola:
Great research, Arturo! Men being men, I was sure women were brought early on, and colorful ones at that! Thanks for the enlightenment; historical facts are usually more interesting than believing a sugar-coated fairytale. Alice B Blake

Geronimo de Aguilar was a Franciscan friar, and while shipwrecked and captured by the Maya in the Yucatan in 1511, he did not father any children (at least not any that he would admit to since that would prove that he had broken his vows of chastity).
He was shipwrecked with Gonzalo Guerrero, who bacame a war leader for Nachan Kaan, married a rich Maya woman and fathered Mexico's first three mestizo children sometime in the 1510s.
When Cortes sent a message to ask Aguilar and Guerrero to join him in his conquest of Mexico in 1519, Aguilar went, but Guerrero told Aguilar:
"Hermano Aguilar, yo soy casado y tengo tres hijos.
He later led the Maya in campaigns against Cortes and his lieutenants like Pedro de Alvarado and the Panamanian governor Pedrarias. One of Alvarado's orders in his Honduras campaign was to capture Guerrero and he supposedly died in 1536 near Chetumal.
There is a statue of him and his mestizo children in Quintana Roo.
If my history is correct and I think 99.9 will be, but without checking my sources I have to say that there was contact with the Mayas from three sailors that were marooned of the coast of Yucatan, they procreated children becoming the first mestizos in the Americas.
(Just as soon as I can I will do some research and let every one know the names of those soldiers.) It might have been Jeronimo de Aguilar.

Wow, I did not known this, I guess Mestizos were born before the criollos, the first European born in the Americas is Luis Cortes Hermosillo. -Daniel

The first child of Spanish parents born in the Americas was likely in Hispaniola (Dominican Republic), where the Spanish had permanent colonies since 1496. I am not very familiar with the microhistory of Santo Domingo from that era to figure out who exactly it might have been but I would be willing to bet a criollo was born there before a child of Hernan Cortes was born in the 1520s.
I don't think there were any Spanish women on the first voyages, but probably there were women on the voyages to Santo Domingo before 1500.

True, after Mexico fell, most conquistadores had wives and travled back to Spain for them and their kids. Luis was the first Spanish Mexican Criollo, not sure who was in Hispaniola

The first Spaniard to be born in America "In the sense of all America not USA" was don Luís Cortés y Hermosillo, child of Hernán Cortés and doña Elvira de Hermosillo, relative of the Hermosillos of Los altos. Not sure how though? I was always told this, I guess we have another task on the plate.

According to Bernal Díaz del Castillo, the first mestizos born in Mexico
were concieved in the Yucatan peninsula by Gonzalo Guerrero, one of two

OK, I've almost given up on this GEDCOM "thingee". Although I can read them (as a guest); how can I be a contributor on it. PLEASE don't tell me I have to buy different software.
Joseph:
To add information to the GEDCOM database all you need to do is request that a tree be set up for you on the database. Then you should be able to either upload a GEDCOM file that you have created in some other software (you can use the free PAF software) or simply use the database as your genealogy repository and manually enter data directly into the database on the website. This is explained in an email that all members get when they first use the GEDCOM database.
As for viewing other members Word file attachments, Microsoft gas a free Word viewer you can download that allows you to view but nit create or edit Word files.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=3657ce88-7cfa-…
The Open Office software that was mentioned is another option. It is free as long as you download it as opposed to order a disk.
Jose Carlos de Leon
Thanks Arturo! I did that and my GEDCOM Thingee is up and running!
I do not know how to contribute to the GEDCOM section, so that's a question for someone else.
However, I do know that files that are in Microsoft Word format can be opened by Open Office, which can be downloaded free at OpenOffice.org

I did not know that they had already loaded digital images onto the AGN website. When I was there a couple of years back I was told that they were in the midst of a digitiaztion project but you know how those things go, particularly in Mexico, but I agree with Salvador that the tool works very well...
Just pilfering through there I found a "limpieza de sangre" of this couple which I believe are the ancestors of many Ranchos members. Unfortunately it is not one of the documents for which the digital image has been loaded on the site.

*1. ¿Cómo puedo hacer una consulta en el AGN?
* •* Acervo documental:*
Saludos

SALVADOR CABRAL VALDES
Estimado Antonio buenas tardes.

Solo me interesaría incrementar mi

Thank you so much. That would explain why he was expected to know his obligations! However, is it unusual to have a priest as the padrino? Perhaps he was a family member, but even then, would he really be expected to raise a child (a girl!)if something happened to the parents? Again, thank you for your info.

Saludos.

Dear Maureen,
I saw that you might visit Salt Lake City in the spring. I too would like to go in the spring and would like to meet up with some Ranchos familia. Maybe there might be other individuals who might be interested in a spring meet-up in SLC?

If you go to SLC, get res in advance for the Christmas music. It is free
but you have to res. It is wonderful. It was chilly, but not cold.

Good morning, Rick...
I recently searched a microfilm at our local LDS Family Center and I was
able to download images onto a USB flash-drive by using one of their viewers
that was connected to a PC running windows and their software...
Most likely you should be able to do this in Salt Lake City also...

In addition to the good advice you have received regarding ordering VAULT
films in advance, I also suggest that you make a research plan and log for
each parish or municipio in which you want to search and include the
ancestral names you expect to find there. I print out and bring the film
list pages from the FHL catalog so I can see easily what else is available
for my locations in case I don't immediately find what I am looking for. If
you have to order VAULT films while you are there, it can take two to three
days to get them.
Do not overlook the books and maps on the International Floor. You can
check the FHLC in advance and print out the listings for what you want to
look at. There are books there I have not found anywhere else. It is worth
it also to spend some time just browsing the book stacks for Mexico and
Spain.
If you do not arrive at the library early in the morning, you may have to
fight for a film reader on the International Floor (Basement 1). Sometimes
large visiting groups stake out their readers and then never move their
items for hours, even if they are not at their readers. I have found that
Basement 2 film readers are more available, and they are better readers with
better desk heights for a variety of people and a bit more room around the
readers for laptops, films, papers, etc. You have to pull all your films
out of the drawers on Basement 1 and carry them with you to Basement 2, but
it is a good option instead of trying to read your film on an inferior
reader among crowds.
Even if you plan to use a flash drive, you will want to get a copy card for
book page xeroxes and for film copies when you don't want to wait for the
scanning machine. There are card machines on every floor. Keep the card as
it is rechargeable forever.
There is a snack area in the library on the main floor where you can get
junk food, fruit, drinks and sandwiches to eat in that area. I go there
when I can't tear myself away from the library.
I have stayed at the Shilo Inn, within easy walking distance. It can be a
good deal if you book it together with a plane flight through Expedia. They
offer a free breakfast and free shuttle service back and forth to the
airport. I do not recommend their lunch and dinner choices but there is a
good Olive Garden Italian restaurant right across the street and also the
Blue Iguana about a block away. The rooms are not really wonderful but they
are clean and quiet and I'm in the library as much as possible anyway.
The Radisson is also close, more expensive, but the rooms are nicer. The
restaurant is very overpriced.
The Plaza Hotel has been bought by BYU and the upper floors are now student
housing. The FHL is just down the alley and therefore easily accessible. I
ate in the restaurant this January a few times and it is adequate. Arturo's
comments were accurate.
Have fun when you go; I always feel like a kid in a candy store.

Sheila,
Thanks for all the great info and advice. I already started to make the list
and it looks like I'm in for a great experience.
I'll probably end up staying there for more days that I first thought. I
just hope there's not that many people that week.
Best regards,
Rick
Rick,
You could call the FHC in Salt Lake City to be sure there are no big conferences there the week that you go. People come from all over the world for the conferences, and it can get very crowded.
The best time to go is in January if you want to avoid crowds. You can practically have the whole library and all its equipment to yourself then. People go out to the ski-slopes in winter, but the genealogists usually come during the nicer weather when it doesn't snow.
My local genealogy society usually spends 10 days there in January every year. I usually just go when the weather is nicer, but then sometimes there is a conference going on, and it gets crowded.

Ricardo:
Candy's suggestion about knowing what films you will be looking at ahead of time is a great piece of advice. If you notify them a week ahead of time of the dates of your visit and the numbers of any films that are listed as VAULT instead of FHL in the film catalog, they will get them to the library for you. Wonderful service.
You should definitely take a USB thumb drive. You can also burn CDs from the scanner computers. There are very good digital scanners on every floor and you can book them for only an hour at a time so it is good idea to mark up everything you want to scan ahead of time (put little slips of paper in the film as you view it to keep track of where your record is). You can also jump from floor to floor if you want more time on the machine.
There is a restaurant that is decent in the Plaza Hotel just next door to the library where you can get a decent lunch, but the hotel is just so so. It used to be better but the cleanliness and service was bad last time I went in March of 2007. There are a number of other hotels just down S West Temple about five blocks away on the 500 to 600 block.
Look up Pilar Manriquez, who I believe is still a volunteer at the library. She is originally from Mexicali and is very amicable. She knows many of us Rancheros. I believe there are also a number of other Ranchos members who live in or around Salt Lake City.
If you like Thai food, this is one of the better places I found to eat near the library:
Lemon Grass Thai Cuisine

Thank you Emily, Candis, Arturo and everyone for this VERY helpful advice. I
would have been lost without all this info. I will definitely follow up and
do as suggested. I hope this is just the first of many trips to come.
What would I do without you?
Best regards to all,

Candy's suggestion about knowing what films you will be looking at ahead of
time is a great piece of advice. If you notify them a week ahead of time of
the dates of your visit and the numbers of any films that are listed as
VAULT instead of FHL in the film catalog, they will get them to the library
for you. Wonderful service.
You should definitely take a USB thumb drive. You can also burn CDs from
the scanner computers. There are very good digital scanners on every floor
and you can book them for only an hour at a time so it is good idea to mark
up everything you want to scan ahead of time (put little slips of paper in
the film as you view it to keep track of where your record is). You can
also jump from floor to floor if you want more time on the machine.
There is a restaurant that is decent in the Plaza Hotel just next door to
the library where you can get a decent lunch, but the hotel is just so so.
It used to be better but the cleanliness and service was bad last time I
went in March of 2007. There are a number of other hotels just down S West
Temple about five blocks away on the 500 to 600 block.
Look up Pilar Manriquez, who I believe is still a volunteer at the library.

Sometimes the films a person wants are not located in the library. The patron has to fill out a rrequest to have them transferred. Sometime this can take 2 or 3 days.
It is best if you go through the Family History Library catalog before you leave so you can decide films you want to see. You can make a list and then fax or mail it to the library. If there is a series of films (even if you don't think that you will all of them), it's best to get them all. Give them your arrival date so the films will be there when you want to start using them.

I've been 2-3 times with a friend, spending a week each time. It's an amazing place.
First, be flexible. On our first trip, my friend was intent on finding very specific information. When she didn't find it, she continued along the same line of research and found little. At the end of the week, she had wasted much of her time. When I got stuck on a line, I switched to another line and came home with oodles of information.
Secondly, remember that their books don't circulate. Your trip is the only time you will have to look at them. While you don't want to get bogged down with the books, devote a day or so to them. Don't read and copy by hand or enter info into your computer. Copy the pages on the copier and read them at home.
Third, prior to your trip, use their website and print out the film info for the films [and fiche] that you want to look at. I always take a notebook with these sheets in it, organized by family. You don't want to waste time on the computer looking for film numbers while you're there.
Fourth, be sure to take advantage of the people who are there to help. They're very knowledgeable and won't try to convert you.
And lastly, don't expect to have a nice glass of wine or beer with your dinner unless you choose your restaurant carefully. They have strict liquor laws.
Brenda Perkins
Just adding to what Brenda has said, you need to order your films in
advance. If the film says FHL it is at the library but if it says VAULT you
need to order it in. It normally takes a couple days to get in so plan in
advance. remember that you might find your ancestor right away so dont
forget to order the films were the next generation might be also. You might
want to order the films wher several generations of ancestors might be.
I was looking at the baptismal records for the children of Martin Fernandes de Vaulus and Isabel de Grijalva y Velasco. They were baptized in Aguascalientes in the period 1618-1634.
George,
The cross or plus sign in early records of Aguascalientes is merely a check
mark to indicate whether the person was "español" and not of mixed race.
The explanation is noted in one of the first record books, I don't remember
which one. The cross was used for several years, until the priest or his
assistant started noting the race or caste as "espl." "indio" "mestizo"
"negro" "mulato" etc. In some baptismal records the priest wrote "que dicen
ser español", probably because the color of the child's skin indicated
otherwise, but in general the priest knew his parishioners and probably
their racial background. I have no doubt that some errors were made, but in
general the markings are accurate.
Bill Figueroa
Wow, Bill this helps and explains why I know some people in records are supposed to be Spanish but always just saw a cross. Thats odd why would the priest say "que dicen ser español" if the newborn is pinkish the newborn will grow to have white skin. It could probably be the reason of Castizo, which you prob know already, 75% white and 25% Indio. It might be a case to say que dicen ser español, since society did except most castizos as Spanish.

Salvadorc,
I am very much interested in some of the information you have just posted. My grandmother was Juventina Luna, the daughter of Francisco Luna and Dolores Marquez. She (Juventina) married Matilde Mejia Huerta (or perhaps Matilde Huerta Mejia). However, I can find no information on Matilde, his marriage or his birth. Do you have any additional information on these individuals? Thank you.

I found it was because someone went looking for shelter marquez search program familysearch in normal as in the pilot and left, all on juchipila, what year was the event to give you years of batch

Juventina Luna De Mejia was born about 1913 in Juchapila Zac, she married Matilda (Matilde) Mejia, born 1904. Not sure of date of marriage, maybe approx. 1928 - 1930?
